The paper focuses on German forms of place names in Czechia and Slovakia, and Hungarian forms of place names in Slovakia, especially on their revitalization and perception after 1989. This concerns their thematization, which is illustrated on the Czech National Corpus and the Slovak National Corpus materials, and on the 1990s discussions about their restoration. German place-name forms are not considered to be a crucial political topic these days; however, Hungarian forms still represent a conflict potential. German forms in Czechia are only thematized in poetry and fiction books, in order to evoke lasting time and the complicated modern Czech history. On the other hand, they are predominantly used in trade names as a marketing tool aimed at German (localization function) and Czech customers (allusive function). In Slovakia, Hungarian forms are not used in marketing and are not thematized in fiction as a positive value connected with the national history.

Příspěvek vychází ze zaměření autorky na nářeční apelativní a propriální slovní zásobu v češtině. Vzájemné ovlivňování a prolínání obou složek je ilustrováno na příkladech ze dvou obcí – z Hlohovce, obce s původně chorvatským obyvatelstvem na pomezí východní Moravy a Rakouska, jejíž název byl zřejmě uměle vytvořen na základě mylné interpretace apelativního východiska jména obce (jméno Hlohovec patrně nesouvisí s apelativem hloh, ale se slovesem ležet), a z Rácova na Jihlavsku na Českomoravské vysočině, kde v důsledku zániku regionálního apelativa došlo k mylnému chápání motivace pomístního jména a jeho přetvoření ve jméno nové, předpokládající zcela jinou motivaci (M/močihuba : MozciHuba : Mučí Huba : Mlčí Huba -> Tiché údolí, Mlčící dolina).
The article in based on the author’s academic interest in dialectological vocabulary and proper names. The two sectors’ mutual influence is illustrated by means of examples from two locations: Hlohovec, a village on the East-Moravian and Austrian border, the name of which was presumably coined as a consequence of a false interpretation of its appellative basis (Hlohovec is probably not related to the appellative hloh ‘hawthorn’, but to the verb ležet ‘lay’), and Rácov in the Jihlava region of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands where the local appellative perished and an anoikonym was falsely understood and transformed into another one with a different motivation (M/močihuba – ‘heavy drinker’: MozciHuba : Mučí Huba : Mlčí Huba ‘mouth is quiet’ -> Tiché údolí ‘quiet valley’, Mlčící dolina ‘silent dale’).

The article describes thirteen folk (unscientific) etymologies of eleven place names included in Romuald Fryderowicz’s 2013 book Podania i legendy pomorskie zebrane w latach 1914–1922 [Pomeranian legends collected in the years 1914–1922]. A folk etymology is defined as ‘scientifically incorrect explanation of the origins of a word based on the similarity of its form to other words or other casual associations’.The analysed pseudo‑etymologies concern the following place names: Borkowo, Górzno, Osie, Przechowo, Rudki, Tleń, Tuchola, Warzno, Wysin, Zawory and Zblewo; the book  devotes two pseudo-etymologies to Tuchola and Wysin each. Some of these pseudo etymologies come from a field exploration, but as much as seven of them occur to be pseudo-scientific. The author uses this term for unprofessional (contrary to onomastic methodology) explanations of the structure and meaning of a word using the research results of various scientific disciplines, especially history.

The paper demonstrates the current state of research on the presence of Slavs on the island of Crete in the Middle Ages, as well as in the modern times. The basis for the discussion is a new book of Pantelis Haralampakis, published in 2016. There are numerous controversies surrounding the issues of the exact chronology of Slavic presence on the island, the lexical influence of South Slavic languages on the Cretan dialect of Modern Greek, as well as possible traces of Slavic settlements in the Cretan toponymy.

Analizą objęto dwadzieścia dwie nazwy, które miały brzmienie wskazujące na pochodzenie od przezwiska obraźliwo-humorystycznego. Z tego sześć nazw (Bździele, Dupki pow. piski, Oszczywilki, Pierdzielewo, Pistki, Zasraje) rzeczywiście uznano za prawdopodobnie pochodzące od tego typu określeń. Kolejne dwie nazwy (Dupki pow. gołdapski, Osranki) być może również były takiego pochodzenia, choć istnieją też wskazówki przeciwne, które należy jeszcze sprawdzić w dodatkowych badaniach. Można natomiast wykluczyć takie pochodzenie nazw pozostałych czternastu miejscowości (Dopki, Jodupie Wielkie, Małe i Średnie, Kurwią, Kurwik, Pupy i pochodne, Szczybały Giżyckie i Orłowskie, Usranki, Zakałcze). Należy jednak zauważyć, że pierwotne obce brzmienie (pruskie lub litewskie) niektórych tych nazw (Jodupie, Kurwią, Kurwik, Pupy, Usranki) były podstawą do późniejszych skojarzeń z polskimi określeniami obraźliwo- humorystycznymi. Tak też je rozumiała ludność mazurska (przykład Usranek) i późniejsza ludność napływowa po 1945 r. Faktyczne nazwy odprzezwiskowe obraźliwo-humorystyczne i im podobne stanowią więc zaledwie niewielki ułamek wszystkich nazw miejscowości, ale w sposób oryginalny oddają zróżnicowany charakter onomastyki dawnych Mazur.
The analysis covered twenty-two names that included words pointing to their origin in an offensive- humorous nickname. Of these, six names (Bździele, Dupki, Piski district, Oszczywilki, Pierdzielewo, Pistki, Zasraje) probably derived from this type of designation. The next two names (Dupki, Gołdap district, Osranki) may also have had a similar origin, although there are also indications to the contrary, which still need to be researched further. However, such a derivation of the names of the remaining fourteen localities (Dopki, Jodupie Wielkie, Małe and Średnie, Kurwią, Kurwik, Pupy and derivatives, Szczybały Giżyckie and Orłowskie, Usranki, Zakałcze) can be excluded. It should be noted, however, that the original foreign wording (Prussian or Lithuanian) of some of these names (Jodupie, Kurwią, Kurwik, Pupy, Usranki) were the basis for later associations with Polish offensive-humorous terms. This is also how the Masurian population understood them (e.g. Usranki) as well as the later immigrant population after 1945. The actual number of offensive-humorous and similar names therefore only make small fraction of all place names, but they reflect in an original way the diverse character of old Masuria’s onomastics.

Administracyjne zmiany ukraińskich i uważanych za ukraińskie nazw miejscowości w Polsce południowo-wschodniej w 1977 roku, późniejsze zabiegi o uchylenie zmian i przywrócenie nazw w 1981 roku były już omawiane. W artykule podano kilka nowych szczegółów oraz omówiono wcześniejsze zmiany przeprowadzone po 1945 roku.
Адміністративні зміни українських і таких, що вважалися українськими, назв населених пунктів у Південно-Східній Польщі в 1977 році, пізніші заходи, що мали на меті скасування цих змін і повернення назв у 1981 році, вже були обговорені. У статті подано кілька нових подробиць, а також обговорено більш ранні зміни, запроваджені після 1945 року.
In 1977 Polish government renamed 122 places names in southeasth Poland, replacing place names of Ukrainian origin (in fact part of them were actually of Polish origin) with new, Polish ones. Thanks in part to the efforts of the Solidarity movement the changes were reverteded in 1981. The paper presents some new details concerning the efforts made for the restitution of the old place names and discusses earlier changes to place names of Ukrainian origin made after 1945.

From old-time to modern Poznań in detective storiesThe article discusses the image of Poznań in detective fiction written after 1989. The criminal stories were selected in such a way that their action takes place in different times, the purpose of the paper is to show how the choice of names affects the understanding of the novel’s content and compare the names used by the author with the real urban nomenclature with that of Poznan, both presently and in the period in which the piece is set. The main question posed is whether the time of action influences the selection of proper names and how the proper names were chosen for novels in which action takes place in earlier periods: whether the author uses historical urbanonyms, present ones or adopts a different strategy altogether. The article aims to show how the picture of Poznań is created in detective stories and how much it corresponds to reality. Od dawnego do współczesnego Poznania w kryminaleArtykuł pokazuje obraz Poznania w kryminałach napisanych po roku 1989. Kryminały zostały wybrane w taki sposób, aby ich akcja rozgrywała się w różnych czasach. Celem pracy jest pokazanie, jak dobór nazw własnych wpływa na zrozumienie treści dzieła oraz porównanie nazw z ówczesnym i współczesnym nazewnictwem miejskim Poznania. Główne pytanie stawiane w pracy dotyczy tego, czy czas akcji wpływa na dobór onimów oraz jak wygląda dobór onimów w kryminałach z akcją osadzoną we wcześniejszych latach. Czy autor odzwierciedla w powieści funkcjonujące wówczas realnie urbanonimy, opiera się na stanie współczesnym, czy obiera jeszcze inną strategię? Artykuł ma pokazać, jak kształtuje się przestrzeń Poznania w kryminale i czy historycznie oraz współcześnie odpowiada stanowi faktycznemu.

Po ustaleniu w 1945 r. granicy Polski na linii Odry i Nysy Łużyckiej nie zdążono na włączonych ziemiach przywrócić niektórych dawnych polskich i słowiańskich nazw miejscowych. Zostały one zastąpione w urzędowym obiegu przez nazwy utworzone przez Komisję Ustalania Nazw Miejscowości i Obiektów Fizjograficznych z udziałem mieszkańców. Autor proponuje zapisanie polskich dawnych nazw na współczesnych mapach obok nazw urzędowych, jako zabytków kultury i historii, oraz omawia zagadnienia i procedury ustalania tych dawnych nazw.
After determination of Poland’s border on Odra and Nysa Łużycka line in 1945, some old polish and slavonic place names on incorporated area were not restored in time. Hence, in official use, they were replaced with place names created by commission of names standardization with participation of inhabitants. The Author recommends introduction of these place names on contemporary maps as cultural and historic monuments, beside official place names, and discusses problems and procedures of these old place names standardization.

In dem Beitrag geht es um eine seit einigen Monaten im Internet frei zugänglichen Datei von mit ca. 450.000 geographischen Namen. Sie ist mit dem Titel Nomina Geographica Europaea. Bibliographische Sammlung zu europäischen Orts-, Flur- und Gewässernamen unter der folgenden Internet-Adresse erreichbar: https://adw-verwaltung.uni-goettingen.de/ortsnamen/images_lightbox.php/. In dem Text wird die Datei näher beschrieben. Es werden Entstehung, Prinzipien und Aufbau näher umrissen und darauf verwiesen, dass die Nutzung völlig frei ist und für alle Interessierten offen steht.Im zweiten Teil des Beitrages wird an einem Beispiel, das der Wanderung slavischer Stämme auf den Balkan gezeigt, wie die Datei mit ihrer großen Fülle von Daten genutzt werden kann: die Sammlung der geographischen Namen erlaubt es dank der darin enthaltenen Angaben, Kartierungen zu erstellen, deren Ergebnisse für die Frage, auf welchen Wegen slavische Stämme den Weg nach Süden genommen haben, wichtig sind.
The article discusses a file with around 450,000 geographical names that has been freely accessible on the Internet for a few months. The title of this file is Nomina Geographica Europaea. Bibliographische Sammlung zu europäischen Orts-, Flur- und Gewässernamen reachable at the following Internet address: https://adw-verwaltung.uni-goettingen.de/ortsnames/images_lightbox.php/. The text describes the file in more detail. Its origin, principles and structure are outlined and refer- ence is made to the fact that its use is completely free and open to anyone interested. In the second part of the article, an example of the migration of Slavic tribes to the Balkans is intro- duced to show how the file with its large amount of data can be used: the collection of geographi- cal names allows, thanks to the information it contains, to create mappings, the results of which are important for the question of the routes by which Slavic tribes made their way south.

Artykuł przedstawia teoretyczny problem statusu desygnacji miejsc terenowych na przykładzie osiemnastowiecznego materiału z terytorium ziemi przemyskiej. Ujawnia on poza formami ustabilizowanymi, czyli nazwami własnymi, również deskrypty z cechami nieonimicznymi. W świetle zebranego materiału można niekiedy śledzić proces przekształcania się takich deskryptów w onimy w tak zwanym procesie onimizacji.
This paper presents a theoretical issue of the status of the designation of the place names on the basis of explorations of the 18th-century material from the province of Przemyśl. The research has revealed the existence of fixed forms - place names - but also of descriptive forms devoid of onymic features. The data analysis allows tracing the processes responsible for turning descriptive elements into onymic elements in the process called onymization.

Die Osěk- und Osěč- Namen bilden eine kleine Gruppe von Ortsnamen, die Siedlungen bei einem Grenzverhau benennen. Die einzelnen Stammesgebiete waren gewöhnlich von einer breiten Urwaldzone umgeben. Mit einem Grenzverhau sicherte man im frühen Mittelalter den Zugang zu einem Stammesgebiet. Zu diesem Zweck hackte man die Äste und Baumspitzen in zwei Meter Höhe ab und schuf so ein undurchdringliches Hindernis. Sein Durchgang war leicht zu kontrollieren und zu verteidigen. Die darauf bezugnehmenden Wörter urslaw. *osěkъ und *osěčь sind von urslaw. *osěkati ՙvon den Bäumen die Äste abhauen, die Bäume stutzen, behauen՚ abgeleitet. In dem Beitrag werden alle betreffenden Ortsnamen des altsorbischen Sprachgebietes zusammengestellt, historisch dokumentiert sowie die Lage bei einem Stammesgebiet oder bei einer alten Verkehrsverbindung beschrieben. Eine mehrfarbige Karte illustriert die Untersuchungsergebnisse.
The Osěk- and Osěč- names form a small group of place names which designate settlements near a border barrier. The individual tribal areas were usually encircled by a wide band of primeval forest. In the early Middle Ages access to a tribal area was safeguarded by a border barrier. For this purpose one chopped off branches and tree tops at a height of two meters and thus created an impenetrable obstacle. The passage way was easy to control and defend. The Proto-Slavic words *osěkъ and *osěčь which refer to these constructions are derived from the Proto-Slavic verb *osěkati, meaning “to chop branches off the trees, to trim, hew trees”. In this article all respective place names of the Old Sorbian language area are compiled and historically documented. In addition, the site of a tribal area or an old traffic connection is described. A multicolored map illustrates the results of the research.
