Opis:
The Cimmerian Continent (or Cimmeria, Cimmerian terrane, Cimmerian blocks) was detached from eastern Gondwana in the Late Paleozoic as a sliver/ribbon of continental strip rifting elements. Recently, these elements belong to an almost continuous long belt (ca. 13,800 km) from central Italy trough Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Tibet, SW China, Myanmar, Thailand up to Indonesia (Sumatra). The palaeogeographic position and relationship of some elements during Permian-Mesozoic times is still matter of discussion. The Qiangtang and Lhasa blocks (present-day Tibet) belong to these elements and their location in space and time and their relationship causes a lot of controversies. Their position alongside eastern Gondwana in the mid-Early Permian (ca. 290–285 Ma) are suggested both by palaeomagnetic and facies studies. Palaeomagnetic studies indicated this position one decade ago, which has been confirmed by recent studies. The Cimmerian Continent [Iran (Alborz)-Qiangtang-Baoshan-Tengchong-Sibumasu] was separated from the Gondwanian part of Pangea during mid-Early Permian time by rifting and drifting. Northwards migration of it took place during Permian-Triassic times caused wide opening of the Bangong‐Nujiang Tethyan Ocean and closing of the Paleotethys Ocean but the Lhasa block was still southern margin of the Bangong‐Nujiang Ocean. The Triassic Indosinian Orogeny has been one of the most spectacular geotectonic event reflecting collision of this continent with Indochina block and closure of the Paleotethys Ocean. The separation of the Lhasa block from Gondwana is enigmatic but most probably took place during earliest Jurassic times. This separation was followed by quick shift northward. Intensive sedimentological studies of the Late Triassic (Carnian-Norian) several flysch-type turbidites in the eastern Tethyan Himalaya (e.g. Qulonggongba, Pane Chaung, Langjiexue, Quehala, Duoburi formations/groups) indicate that their provenance was connected with Lhasa block, which has been their source area during early-stage evolution of the Neotethys. The late Early Permian rift-related basaltic magmatism in northern Baoshan (in SW China) and sourrounding regions was connected with first step of separation from Gondwana margin of this block (together with South Qiangtang and Sibumasu blocks and simultaneously with opening of the Bangong‐Nujiang Ocean before the Middle Permian)  – independently of Lhasa block which was separated later, the most probably during Late Triassic or Triassic/Jurassic transition time with very wide space of the Bangong‐Nujiang Tethyan Ocean between Qiangtang and Lhasa blocks (2,600 km ±710 km  – 23.4° ±6.4° during the Middle Jurassic with its maximum width in the Late Triassic). From the palaeobiogeographic point of view, the worldwide distribution of Pliensbachian-Early Toarcian large bivalves of the so-called Lithiotis-facies, dominated by Lithiotis, Cochlearites, Litioperna genera revealed by the authors’ studies, indicates very rapid expansion of such type of bivalves alongside southern margin of Neotethys, and could be good evidence of palaeogeographic position of the Lhasa block in this time. Himalayan and Tibetan (Nyalam area) occurrences of Lithiotis and/or Cochlearites bivalves could help to place the Lhasa block nearby the Gondwana during Early Jurassic times. This palaeobiogeographic research contradict another interpretation based on different fossils (Permian fusulinids and brachiopods) interpreted as subtropical fauna, which could occur in low subtropical latitudes together with other parts of the Cimmerian Continent.

The Middle Permian Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone in South Africa has produced a rich record of tetrapods dominated by dinocephalian therapsids and pareiasaurid parareptiles. In this study we reassess the affinities of a specimen from this horizon previously identified as a procolophonoid and provide evidence that it is instead referable to a nycteroleter parareptile, an identification that is more compatible with the age of this fossil. Accordingly, this specimen represents the first record of a nycteroleter in Gondwana.

Opis:
Permian chert and siliceous mudstone in the Soi Dao, Chanthaburi Thailand are extracted the details on radiolarian assemblage and age, change of depositional environment, and geochemical characteristics. Permian radiolarians were obtained in three study areas (ASD01, ASD14 and ASD09); which radiolarian age of each section is as follows: ASD01: Early Asselian to Early Sakmarian, ASD14: Late Sakmarian to Artinskian, and ASD09: Capitanian to Early Changhsingian. Considering the lithofacies, ages, and chemical composition of the rocks, a preliminary stratigraphy consisting of basaltic rock, radiolarian bedded chert, siliceous mudstone, and coarse-grained clastic of alternation of sandstone and mudstone in ascending order can be reconstructed. Data on geochemistry analysis, particularly chondrite-normalized REEs patterns of chert and siliceous mudstone, present a gradual change in that degree of the Ce negative anomaly decrease toward the stratigraphical upper position. These changes indicate that the depositional site of the Permian rocks transferred from a state of high hydrothermal activity to a state of weakened activity and that the influx of terrestrial clastics increased. Permian bedded cherts accompanied by basalts and siliceous mudstones recognized in the study area closely resemble to the Paleo- ‑Tethys bedded cherts in terms of their lithofacies and microscopic features; however, their depositional period is much shorter than that of the Paleo-Tethys, indicating that it was deposited in another oceanic basin. The chemical compositions also show that the influence of hydrothermal activity weakened from the strong state, and the terrigenous clastics rapidly supplied.

This paper describes fourteen brachiopod species in eleven genera from the Late Permian Wuchiapingian Coal Series (Lungtan Formation) of South China. Of these, the shell bed fauna from the basal Lungtan Formation is interpreted to represent the onset of the recovery of shelly faunas in the aftermath of the Guadalupian/Lopingian (G/L) mass extinction in South China. The post−extinction brachiopod faunas in the Wuchiapingian are characterized by the presence of numerous Lazarus taxa, survivors, and newly originating taxa. These elements capable of adapting their life habits were relatively more resistant to the G/L crisis. The post−extinction faunas, including survivors and the elements originating in the recovery period, have no life habit preference, but they were all adapted to a variety of newly vacated niches in the Late Permian oceans. Two new species, Meekella beipeiensis and Niutoushania chongqingensis, are described, and two Chinese genera, Niutoushania and Chengxianoproductus, are emended based on re−examination of the type specimens and new topotype materials from the Lungtan Formation.

The article by Ptaszyński and Niedźwiedzki (2004) on vertebrate tracks from the well−known Tumlin Sandstone provides important documentation of the unique terrestrial ichnofauna of the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland. However, two of the major conclusions of this paper raise my objections. The authors propose a new position for the Permian–Triassic (P–Tr) boundary within the Buntsandstein succession of the regional lithostratigraphical scheme. In a conclusion of global significance, the authors find no signature of a mass extinction in the Late Permian land−dwelling tetrapod communities. Both of these issues are reviewed below.

Opis:
In recent years, conchostracan biostratigraphy has become a popular tool for the recognition of the Permian–Triassic boundary and for the chronostratigraphic subdivision of the Triassic in intracontinental settings, including also the bone-bearing Keuper strata of Poland. The ambiguous nature of the new bio-chronostratigraphic approach was characterized in a case study of the Permian–Triassic boundary interval. The most important problems were: (1) the lack of documentation of the index species, (2) the indirect correlation with the conodont stratigraphy in marine reference sections through the sporomorph spectra, (3) the lack of definition and documen- tation of supporting palynologic zones, and (4) difficulties in reliable taxonomic determination of Conchostraca. Testing and, if necessary, revision of the zonation by several independent research groups is suggested.

Palynological assemblages from the Camdag area of NW Turkey are analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. All preparations logged from different palynomorph sampling sections show high ratios of pollen. Within the pollen fraction percentages of up to 71% for the bisaccate pollen Lueckisporites Potonie and Klaus 1954 are remarkable. This pattern is reminiscent of palynofloras described from the Upper Permian of Europe. This enables the study area to be shown in its palaeogeographic context, and constrains interpretation of microfloral affinities, palynostratigraphy, and depositional environment. The palaeoenvironmental model clearly indicates deposition within the hinterland, corroborating previous interpretations.

A total of 297 samples for palaeomagnetic studies were collected from Upper Gzhelian through Spathian sediments of the Isfjorden area (central Spitsbergen). In spite of extensive Cenozoic remagnetisation the studied rocks yielded palaeomagnetic poles and magnetostratigraphy. Almost all Permian samples were reversely magnetised during Kiaman superchron. Normal-polarity samples appear in the Ufimian and Kazanian sediments. The topmost samples from the Kapp Starostin Formation (Upper Permian) contain reverse polarity. The magnetic polarity record noted in the Early Triassic (Griesbachian-Spathian) sequences is fully convergent with magnetic polarity schemes obtained in the Canadian Arctic and Deltadalen type section.

Anhydrite is widespread in the Prypiać Trough in the form of beds and nodules in the Subsaliferous Terrigenous and Carbonate formations (Eifelian and Frasnian), the Lower Saliferous Formation (Frasnian), the Intersaliferous and Upper Saliferous formations (Famennian). It is also present in the Asselian and Sakmarian (Lower Permian) deposits of the trough. The anhydrite is grey, blue, pink and orange. It has massive and, more rarely, horizontal bedding, and a fine- and micro-crystalline structure. Gypsum extends widely across the Orša Depression, Žlobin and Latvijas Saddles and partly in the Belarusian Anteclise, where it lies within the Eifelian deposits. It is also found in the Frasnian strata of the North-Prypiać Shoulder. As a component of facial analogue of the Upper Saliferous Formation gypsum forms the Bryniou deposit in the west of the Prypiać Trough. This mineral is also observed in the Oversaliferous Formation (Famennian) and in the Asselian and Sakmarian strata of the trough. There are spar, saccharoidal, alabastrine and selenitic varieties of gypsum. A medium to coarse crystalline structure is typical. The gypsum is grey, pink, yellow or orange.

Opis:
A recently investigated Zechstein Limestone (Ca1, Wuchiapingian) bryozoan fauna from the Polish part of the Southern Permian Basin (SW Poland) is dominated volumetrically and taxonomically by fenestellids. In total six species from five genera are recognized, comprising two species of trepostomes belonging to Dyscritella Girty, 1911 and four fenestellids attributed to Kingopora Morozova, 1970, Kalvariella Morozova, 1970, Acanthocladia King, 1849 and Spinofenestella Termier and Termier, 1971. The greatest biodiversity of the bryozoans in the Ca1 profiles studied is within the slope facies where large, fan-shaped and funnel-shaped reticulate fenestellid colonies up to 10 cm high dominate. In contrast, bryozoans in the marginal (proximal) parts of the basin mostly comprise trepostomes, represented by encrusting plate-like or coil-shaped colonies of Dyscritella Girty, and commonly broken branched colonies of Acanthocladia King. The changes in the biotic composition of the bryozoans and the presence of a dominant colony growth form in the stratigraphical profile of the Ca1 reflect the depositional environment and water energy. These factors stimulate the successive stages of the development of the biota and their settlement, marked by the rich productid-fenestellid assemblages typical of the offshore setting, with the maximum depth in the middle part of the Ca1 in the Grodziec Syncline. The proximal tempestites and foreshore facies of the upper part of the Ca1 (Leszczyna Syncline) terminate the sedimentary cycle of the Ca1, with the remnant, broken bryozoans of Acanthocladia and fenestellids. The relationship between the taxonomic composition, colony growth-patterns, associated biota, and sedimentary structures points to slow sedimentation rate on slope and basin floor of the Ca1 carbonate platform. The fenestellids which are dominated in the studied biota by the reticulate and pinnate colonies of Spinofenestella, Kingopora, Kalvariella and Acanthocladia mark a close palaeogeographical link with the Zechstein (Ca1) bryozoans of Great Britain, Germany and the southern Baltic region.

The stable oxygen and sulphur isotope ratios of 52 anhydrite samples from three Zechstein anhydrite units (Lower Anhydrite, Upper Anhydrite and Basal Anhydrite) of West Poland show d18O values vs. VSMOW in the range of 9.4 to 15.5% (mean of 12.6 š1.3%), and d34S values vs. VCDT between 9.6 to 12.6%o (mean of 11.4 š0.6%o). A generally uniform distribution pattern of both isotopic values throughout the section, although with some random variation, implies that sulphate ions were sufficiently supplied and the basin was open during sulphate deposition. There is a slight stratigraphic differentiation of both the d18O and d34S values: the highest mean values are shown by the Upper Anhydrite and the lowest average values occur in the Basal Anhydrite. The correlation between d18 O and 8 S values is statistically significant only in case of the Basal Anhydrite. A wide range of oxygen isotopic ratios (from 11.6 to 25. l%o), with only several samples having d18O values that fall within the range of late Permian seawater, have been recorded in anhydrite cements and nodules that occur in the Main Dolomite rocks. Sulphur isotope ratios of anhydrite cements (range of 7.6 to 12.9%o, average of 10.7 š1.4%o) tend to reflect the late Permian sulphur isotopic signature of sulphate in seawater. The higher ranges of d18O and d34S values of anhydrite cements and nodules in the Main Dolomite compared to the underlying and overlying anhydrites are due to diagenetic resetting. The conversion of gypsum to anhydrite (often very early and under negligible cover) evidently did not affect the primary marine stratigraphic sulphur isotope composition of the sulphate deposits.

The isolated teeth of a new euselachian shark Artiodus prominens Ivanov and Duffin gen. et sp. nov. have been found in the Artinskian Stage (Early Permian) of Krasnoufimskie Klyuchiki quarry (Sverdlovsk Region, Middle Urals, Russia). The teeth of Artiodus possess a multicuspid orthodont crown with from four to nine triangular cusps; prominent labial projection terminating in a large round tubercle; distinct ornamentation from straight or recurved cristae; oval or semilunar, elongate, considerably vascularized base; dense vascular network formed of transverse horizontal, ascending, short secondary and semicircular canals. The teeth of the new taxon otherwise most closely resemble the teeth of some protacrodontid and sphenacanthid euselachians possessing a protacrodont-type crown, but differ from the teeth of all other known euselachians in the unique structure of the labial projection. The studied teeth vary in crown and base morphology, and three tooth morphotypes can be distinguished in the collection reflecting a moderate degree of linear gradient monognathic heterodonty. The range of morphologies otherwise displayed by the collection of teeth shows the greatest similarity to that described for the dentitions of relatively high-crowned hybodontids from the Mesozoic. The internal structure of the teeth, including their vascularization system is reconstructed using microtomography. The highest chondrichthyan taxonomic diversity is found in the Artinskian, especially from the localities of the Middle and South Urals.

A new temnospondyl is described from the Middle-Upper Permian sequence of the Paraná Basin (Rio do Rasto Formation) in southern Brazil. The material consists of disarticulated cranial and postcranial elements, preserved in association. The cranial elements include part of the orbital region of the skull roof, the basicranium, a number of en-docranial elements, stapes and a right hemimandible. The postcranial elements include vertebrae, ribs, pectoral girdle elements, a right femur and a cluster of scales. The new species displays a rhinesuchid pattern, which is similar to the South African rhinesuchids from the Upper Permian Beaufort Group of the Karoo Basin, but differs from them by the presence of a robust and elongated epipterygoid with a blade-like anterior process in addition to elongated and deeper muscular pockets on the parasphenoid, which allow the assignment of this specimen to a new species. However, the phylogenetic analysis grouped the material described herein andAustralerpeton cosgriffi inside Stereospondylomorpha, in a transitional position between the Laurasian assemblages and South African temnospondyls. This result supports a connection between the Brazilian and Eastern European Permian fauna and provides important data for future biostratigraphic studies.

The affinities of the Early Permian synapsid Tetraceratops insignis have been reevaluated several times since the early 20th century, being considered as an eothyridid, a sphenacodontid, or a therapsid. This controversy continues into the 21st century, with recently raised doubts about the interpretation of Tetraceratops as the oldest known therapsid, a hypothesis supported by the only redescription of this fossil in the second half of the 20th century. Our study examines the arguments proposed to refute therapsid affinities, and concludes that Tetraceratops indeed is the sister−group of all other known therapsids. The most recently published phylogenetic data matrix that includes Tetraceratops fails to confirm its therapsid affinities. However, adding seven characters to that matrix leads to the conclusion that Tetraceratops is the basal−most and oldest therapsid. The recent suggestion of a Laurasian origin of therapsids appears poorly supported; too few data are available on the distribution of Permian synapsids to settle this question.

It is well established that pebbles in the Sudetic Permian conglomerates were derived from the nearby Variscan massifs of upper-crustal composition. However, the provenance of the sand-size grains remains enigmatic. Electron microprobe analyses (EMPAs) of detrital garnet from upper Rotliegend conglomerates and sandstones exposed at Golińsk, the Intra-Sudetic Basin, showed a distinct assemblage dominated by high-pyrope (high-grossular) almandine, typical of high-grade metamorphic rocks, such as high-pressure granulites. These results, coupled with a previously reported population of similar detrital garnet in the stratigraphically equivalent conglomerates and sandstones of the Karkonosze Piedmont Basin, suggest regional input of detrital lower-crustal material. This detritus was derived ultimately either from the Moldanubian Zone of the Bohemian Massif, or from high-grade rocks of the Orlica-Śnieżnik Massif that were exposed in the Carboniferous–Permian. Permian siliciclastic rocks might have covered a large part of the Sudetes. During the Mesozoic and Palaeogene, these rocks might have been recycled further, contributing high-pyrope garnet, as an accessory mineral, into siliciclastic rocks of the Sudetes and their foreland.

Opis:
In the Upper Permian continental to marginal-marine succession of the Southern Alps (Dolomites, north Italy), the ichnological record consists of diverse vertebrate footprints and non-diverse invertebrate trace fossils, mainly occurring in the “Bletterbach ichnoassociation” of the Val Gardena Sandstone Formation. After the Permian-Triassic Boundary event, vertebrate ichnoassociations are scarce until the Middle Triassic (Anisian), whereas the uppermost Permian-Lower Triassic Werfen Formation preserves a rich invertebrate trace-fossil record. To date, fish body and trace fossils (Undichna) are very rare in the pre- and post-extinction deposits of the Dolomites; only Undichna gosiutensis Gibert, 2001 was identified in the “Voltago Conglomerate” (Middle Anisian), whereas some unidentified fossil fish casts were found in the Permian Val Gardena Sandstone and some fish remains in the overlying Werfen Formation. Recently, for the first time, fish trails have been discovered in the Val Gardena Sandstone (Lopingian) and in the Werfen Formation (Campil member, Early Triassic, Smithian). Val Gardena Sandstone yielded Undichna cf. quina Trewin, 2000 and U. bina Anderson, 1976 and these represent the oldest fish trails found in the Southern Alps so far. Conversely, the specimens found in the Werfen Formation can be assigned to Undichna cf. britannica Higgs, 1988. They represent the oldest Mesozoic record of fish trace fossils in northern Italy and one of the few records of Undichna from marine environments. These trace fossils are consistent with the fossil association found in the two formations and reflect fish swimming activity in different environments: in very shallow, calm, brackish distal-floodplain to marginal-marine environments in the Late Permian, in association with abundant and diverse tetrapod tracks, and non-diverse invertebrate trace fossils, and in inter- to subtidal calm, shallow, marine environments in the Early Triassic, together with abundant, but not diverse invertebrate trace fossils.

The origin of reptiles in the tetrapod footprint record has always been a debated topic, despite the great potential of fossiliferous ichnosites to shed much light on reptile origins when compared to the much less extensive skeletal record. This is in part due to an unclear ichnotaxonomy of the earliest tracks attributed to reptiles that has resulted in unreliable trackmaker attributions. We comprehensively revise the earliest supposed reptile ichnotaxon, Notalacerta missouriensis, based on a neotype and a selection of well-preserved material from the type locality and other sites. A synapomorphy-based track-trackmaker attribution suggests eureptiles and, more specifically, ́protorothyridids ́ such as Paleothyris as the most probable trackmakers. A revision of the entire Pennsylvanian-Cisuralian record of this ichnotaxon unveils an unexpected abundance and a wide palaeogeographical distribution. The earliest unequivocal occurrence of Notalacerta is in the middle Bashkirian (early Langsettian) at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Joggins Fossil Cliffs (Joggins, Nova Scotia, Canada). This occurrence also coincides with the earliest occurrence of reptile body fossils (Hylonomus lyelli), which are found at the same site. Notalacerta is abundant and widely distributed during the Bashkirian, mostly in sediments deposited in tidal palaeoenvironments, and less common in the Moscovian and Kasimovian. During the Gzhelian and Asselian, Notalacerta occurrences are unknown, but it occurs again during the Sakmarian and is widespread but not abundant during the Artinskian, mostly in fully continental palaeoenvironments.

Strontium isotope ratios have been determined on 74 anhydrite samples from seven borehole cores in the Polish Zechstein. Five of the borehole cores are located in the basin and isotope results from these samples show a nearly pure marine signal. Results from one borehole core, located near the Zechstein coastline that migrated through time, record a stronger, in consistent influence of continental strontium to a marine base. Intermittent meteoric influence is recorded in anhydrites from other borehole cores close to the carbonate platform that was emergent during the anhydrite deposition. Consistency of isotope values indicates a marine signal and there is a narrow range in consistent values from 87Sr/86Sr near deltasw –215 (0.70702) for the oldest anhydrites and near deltasw –205 (0.70712) for the youngest an hydrites. Comparison with a sea water 87Sr/86Sr curve based on samples in West Texas and a Permian-Triassic boundary value from China shows that the Polish Zechstein in these seven boreholes is latest Permian in age and major deposition represents a short time interval (~2 million years). Strontium isotope ratios reported by other workers indicate some of the younger Zechstein elsewhere indicate even greater continental influence is in agreement with the interpreted sedimentological set ing for those anhydrites.

The all available K-Ar data of authigenic illite from Rotliegend aeolian sandstones of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline, including the results from six samples examined in the present study, are reviewed in terms of their geological meaning, relation to diagenetic processes occurring in the sandstones, and implications for a petroleum system. The majority of ages fall in the range between 195 and 150 Ma, i.e. they correspond to Jurassic times. The results may be grouped in several time intervals, which are almost identical to those identified for Rotliegend sandstones of central and western Europe, and which are interpreted as pulses of intensive illite growth. The K-Ar data corroborate the long-held assumption that throughout the entire Southern Permian Basin Jurassic illite growth was triggered by the same, large-scale underlying processes, which manifested themselves in enhanced heat flow. These processes may also have caused the expulsion of hydrocarbons from source rocks.

Microfocus X-ray Computed Tomography (micro-XCT) has been employed recently in radiolarian studies, though so far primarily to generate high quality tomographic images. Although micro-XCT technique cannot always produce high-quality tomographic images, it frequently can provide valuable information on the internal structure of spongy polycystines. Here we employ micro-XCT to understand internal skeletal structures of several Permian specimens of polycystine radiolarians. Structural inferences from micro-XCT images are compared to images of the same specimens made with SEM and transmitted light microscopy (TLM). The utility of micro-XCT for imaging internal structures is first confirmed by examining the spongy, flat, four-spined species Tetraspongodiscus stauracanthus. Micro-XCT method is then used to examine the internal structures of a spherical to elliptical polycystine with two bi-polar main spines, Dalongicaepa bipolaris Xiao and Suzuki gen. et sp. nov., from the Dalong Formation (Changhsingian) of South China. The new genus is characterized by four to seven densely concentric shells with a large spherical hollow in the center and two cylindrical spines at both poles of the cortical shell, and belongs to the family Spongotortilispinidae. Spherical to elliptical polycystines with bi-polar main spines are similar in external appearance, and their phylogenetic relationships are only determinable by examination of the internal structures. We therefore analyzed all Permian and Mesozoic spherical to elliptical polycystines with bi-polar main spines showing internal structures, using cluster analysis to measure similarity. The results show distinctive differences in internal structures and suggest that family level relationships should be revised in the future.

Opis:
The environmental characterization of the Lower Permian mesosaur−bearing strata of the Mangrullo Formation (Paraná Basin, northeastern Uruguay) has been controversial. Historically, marine conditions were suggested for this unit, despite the absence of any normal marine fossils. More recently, some authors have argued for freshwater to brackish settings, inferring fluctuating environmental conditions, which would have generated abrupt changes in the composition of the communities. Mesosaurs are the only tetrapods found in this unit, and they colonized the basin at the time of highest isolation, and apparently increased salinity, coincident with a gradual global rise in aridity. An assemblage of extremely low diversity (the “mesosaur community”) developed, with mesosaur reptiles, pygocephalomorph crustaceans, and the vermiform producers of the trace fossil Chondrites as the dominant components. This community may have existed under temporary hypersaline, lagoon−like conditions, as suggested by ecological, anatomical and physiological attributes of its member taxa. This interpretation is supported by sedimentological and mineralogical features of the enclosing rocks, also seen in the correlative Brazilian Iratí and South African Whitehill formations. In the Uruguayan deposits, as well as in their Brazilian correlatives, relatively close volcanic events affected the basin. This particular environment, where bottom waters were depleted of oxygen and hypersaline, retarded decay of the carcasses, and precluded the development of bioturbating organism, and together with bacterial sealing, favoured exquisite preservation of the fossils, including soft tissues. This leads us to consider the fossil−bearing strata of the Mangrullo Formation as a Konservat−Lagerstätte, the oldest known for South America.

A unique functional adaptation to herbivory within early ray-finned fishes is exemplified by the late Permian actinopterygians within the family Eurynotoidiidae with policuspid teeth strongly modified with respect to the primitive actinopterygian conditions. Here we report additional finds of multidenticulated teeth from the fluvial latest Permian deposits of Russia. The teeth belong to the members of endemic Eurynotoidiidae and show rather high morphological diversity. We confirm that the Russian forms are the earliest known ray-finned fishes with substantial modifications of teeth adapted to the processing of food. These finds confirm some previous suggestions that the adaptation to herbivory first developed in freshwater fishes, not marine. We found very similar dental adaptations in some groups of Recent freshwater teleosts, especially in characiforms and cichlids. It suggests that sympatric species of Permian Eurynotoidiidae explored various herbivorous niches like modern fish in East African lakes. Apparently, this first pulse of adaptive radiation in ray-finned fishes was probably caused by diversification of Permian aquatic vertebrate community.

Opis:
To date there is little information on carpal bone homology in late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic Synapsida. Crucial to the understanding of homology in synapsid carpal elements is the fact that different nomenclatures are used for the carpals of non-mammaliamorph Synapsida (Gegenbauer’s canonical nomenclature) and Mammaliaformes (mammalian nomenclature). The homologies of the carpals of non-mammaliamorph synapsids and mammals were established early last century and have not been reviewed since then. Here we provide a detailed study of the carpal bones of synapsids ranging in age from the early Permian to Late Cretaceous. The mammaliamorph lunate, previously considered the homologue of the intermedium of non-mammaliamorph synapsids, is interpreted here as homologous to their lateral centrale. We interpret the single mammaliamorph centrale as a homologue of the medial centrale of non-mammaliamorph synapsids. In some synapsid specimens, we found that one or two centralia are fused to the radiale (e.g., the gorgonopsian Arctognathus and tritylodontid Bienotheroides), supporting a digging habit. A third centrale is present in the therocephalian Theriognathus, very likely an abnormal duplication. An additional medial bone in a biarmosuchian was interpreted as a prepollex/ sesamoid. A cartilaginous prepollex/sesamoid may also have been present in several non-mammaliamorph synapsids, which have an open space proximal to distal carpal I. Distal carpal V is completely lost in dicynodonts and it is mainly fused to distal carpal IV in the adult stage of most other therapsid groups, but showed a delayed development in most non-mammaliamorph cynodonts. In mammaliamorphs, distal carpal V is not present. Our observations provide an updated revision of synapsid carpal homologies, mainly on the basis of position and anatomical contacts and also taking into account the results of embryological studies.

Opis:
This paper describes a sclerobiont association from the Paso Hondo Formation (Roadian, middle Permian), Chiapas, Mexico. Different marine invertebrates such as hederelloids, microconchids, bryozoans, and crinoids (represented by holdfasts) encrusted brachiopod shells belonging to Athyridida and Rhynchonellida. This association is similar to those recorded in different Devonian localities, especially by the co-occurrence of microconchids, hederelloids, and bryozoans. Paleoecological analysis revealed that bryozoans were the most abundant sclerobionts, whereas crinoid holdfasts were uncommon. Likewise, hederelloids and microconchids often settled on hosts previously colonized by bryozoans. Most microconchids encrusted rhynchonellid shells. A positive correlation between the size of the hosts and abundance/diversity of sclerobionts was recorded. The distribution analysis suggests that sclerobiont colonization could have been influenced either by inhalant currents of brachiopods, time of exposure, position of hosts, or by combination of all these factors. Moreover, most of commissures and foramens of brachiopods were not covered by epibionts, suggesting that there was a live interaction. Thus, studied brachiopods were likely encrusted syn vivo, and the interaction between sclerobionts and their brachiopod hosts was likely commensal since there is no damage to the brachiopod valves in the form of malformations or borings. On the contrary, the epibiont cover might have served as a natural shield against predators and parasites. The Roadian age of the association is based on the stratigraphic distribution of host brachiopods. The studied association inhabited open waters on a homoclinal carbonate ramp in the Chicomuselo region. Although encrusted brachiopods belong to the biotic Grandian Province, similar sclerobiont communities have not been previously recorded from the Permian of North America or beyond. The described community represents the youngest record of co-occurring microconchids, hederelloids, and bryozoans, as all previously known similar communities originate from the Late Devonian.

The assemblage of rare fish microremains of chondrichthyans and actinopterygians from Upper Permian deposits in Karpénai Quarry in northern Lithuania is described in detail for the first time. The deposits are characterized as reflecting a rapid phase of deposition of the Zechstein Limestone, interpreted as on a shallow shelf above storm-wave base in a proximal part of the Polish-Lithuanian Zechstein Basin. The actinopterygian microremains are represented by various teeth and a few scales from mostly palaeonisciforms and pycnodontiforms. The chondrichthyans are represented by various eusela- chian-type scales and a tooth of ?Helodus sp. The low abundance and low species diversity of the fossil assemblages studied may be due to arid palaeoenvironments that caused locally restricted conditions at this palaeogeographical location.

In the last years, the conchostracan stratigraphy has become a popular method for distingushing the Permian/Triassic boundary in intracontinental settings. This paper provides a background of chronostratigraphic interpretation of the new method. Several problems are reported, from which the most important are: 1 – lack of consequent documentation of the index species, 2 – indirect correlation with the conodont stratigraphy through the sporomorph spectra, 3 – lack of definition and documentation of supporting palynologic zones, 4 – difficulties in taxonomic determinations of conchostracan. Revision of the method by several independent research teams is suggested.

European Russia has been the source of many procolophonoid taxa from both the Permian and Triassic, and a Permian origin for the procolophonoid family Procolophonidae has been based on the Russian taxon Microphon exiguus. Recently, this taxon was reclassified as a seymouriamorph and, in its place, the taxa Nyctiphruretus, Suchonosaurus, and Kinelia from the Middle and Upper Permian of Russia were suggested as “procolophons”, using evolutionary−systematic classification methods. In recent phylogenies, however, Nyctiphruretus has been recovered as a non–procolophonoid parareptile, whereas Kinelia and Suchonosaurus have never been included in a phylogenetic study. Re−examination indicates that Suchonosaurus is a member of the procolophonoid subfamily Procolophonidae based on the shape of the maxillary bone and the external naris, the laterally visible maxillary depression, and the number and type of maxillary teeth. Kinelia, on the other hand, is excluded from the Procolophonoidea because of its subpleurodont dental attachment and lack of any procolophonoid features. Thus, Suchonosaurus is the only confirmed Permian procolophonid from the Permian of Russia. Additionally, re−examination of the holotype of Microphon exiguus confirms that it is identical to the seymouriamorph specimens recently included in the genus Microphon and that it lacks procolophonoid features. The earliest unequivocal record of the subfamily Procolophonidae is confirmed from the Late Permian of Russia, making Russia the only region where, with certainty, both Permian and Triassic procolophonids have been discovered.

This paper describes the vertebrate ichnofauna from the Tumlin Sandstone (Buntsandstein) of the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland. The footprint assemblage has previously been regarded as Early Triassic in age; however, ichnogenera characteristic of the Late Permian are now recognized. Lack of representatives of the ichnofamily Chirotheriidae, characteristic of continental Triassic sediments worldwide, also indicates a Permian rather than a Triassic age for the studied assemblage. Three ichnogenera (Batrachichnus, Limnopus, and Amphisauropus) produced by amphibians are recognized, the remainder (Varanopus, Chelichnus, Dimetropus, Rhynchosauroides, Palmichnus, Paradoxichnium, and Phalangichnus) being of reptilian origin. Batrachichnus cf. salamandroides (Geinitz, 1861), Limnopus cf. zeilleri (Delage, 1912), Amphisauropus cf. latus Haubold, 1970, Varanopus aff. microdactylus (Pabst, 1896), Chelichnus cf. duncani (Owen, 1842), and Dimetropussp. are recorded in the Lower Buntsandstein for the first time. The following new ichnospecies are erected: Rhynchosauroides kuletae ichnosp. nov., Palmichnus lacertoides ichnosp. nov., Paradoxichnium tumlinense ichnosp. nov., Phalangichnus gradzinskii ichnosp. nov., and Phalangichnus gagoli ichnosp. nov.

This study describes a new determination of the S and O isotope composition of Lower Permian (Kungurian) anhydrites from the Upper Pechora Basin, Cis-Ural region, Russia. δ34S values in sulphate facies vary from +13.7 to +15.1‰; and δ18O values range from +9.3 to +10.4‰. The values of d34S and d18O of anhydrite from halite facies varies from +12.6 to +15.0‰ and +7.5 to +10.9‰ respectively. The quantitative ratio of pyrite content from the water-insoluble residue (silty-sand fraction) is characterized by extremely low (<<1%) to high (4–5%) steep gradation values. The increased presence of pyrite indicates the influence of bacterial sulphate reduction. The sulphate reduction process was more intense, especially when evaporites were formed in mud. The narrow fluctuation range of sulphur and oxygen isotopes values of the measured anhydrite indicates low levels of fractionation. It was established that during the Permian, evolutionary changes in the content of sulphate ions in sea water correlate with the sulphur isotopic composition of marine evaporites

The results of GC-MS investigations of biomarkers in organic matter from the epicontinental Permian and Triassic strata of the Holy Cross Mts. indicate generally suboxic (Permian) and oxic (Triassic, except for the Middle Muschelkalk) depositional environments with accompanying intensive bacterial reworking of organic remains. The biomarker spectra found in the Middle Muschelkalk and in the Entolium discites Beds (Upper Muschelkalk) show the presence of gammacerane, an increased concentration of C34 homohopanes and a Pr/Ph ratio not exceeding 1. All these observations suggest a hypersaline sedimentary environment with water column stratification and poorly oxygenated conditions. Thermal maturity investigations were based on both vitrinite reflectance and biomarker indices. The organic matter in the Triassic succession is slightly more mature along the northern margin of the Holy Cross Mts. than along their southern part, due probably to a regional increase in the maximum burial depth during the Mesozoic. The maturity of the Permian strata at Gałęzice (southern Holy Cross Mts.) is similar to that of the Triassic rocks whereas Kajetanów (in the north) is characterised by values significantly higher and comparable to those found in wells further north. The difference cannot be accounted for solely by differential burial depths, and implies the existence of a positive thermal anomaly active before the Middle Triassic. Our investigations generally confirmed the low thermal maturity of the Triassic. However, contrary to earlier interpretations, we suggest that the maximum burial depths based on a reconstructed thickness of the post-Triassic deposits may account for the observed maturity levels, assuming that geothermal gradients in the Mesozoic were similar to today's.

The fossil remains of a hemichordate exoskeleton, recognized as fragments of the stolons and their cyst−like swellings connected with the fusellar zooidal tubes, were derived by chemical isolations from Late Permian (Kazanian) mudstones of the Svalis Dome (central Barents Sea, Norway). These fossils, referred to as Diplohydra szaniawskii sp. nov., are the first undoubted representatives of the class Graptolithoidea found in Permian deposits. The genus Diplohydra Kozłowski, 1959, known previously only from the Ordovician and originally established as a thecate hydroid taxon, is reinterpreted as an aberrant member of the order Rhabdopleuroidea. This strange hemichordate, characterized by fusellar tubes distinctly narrower than stolon−like tubes and their swellings, reveals a certain degree of dimorphism in the stolon system. D. szaniawskii sp. nov. also displays some peculiar morphological features common to the Ordovician rhabdopleuroid genus Rhabdopleurites Kozłowski and the stolonoid genus Stolonodendrum Kozłowski.

Opis:
The fusellar tissue of Palaeozoic rhabdopleurid pterobranchs has been studied using the SEM techniques. The fibrillar material of Ordovician Kystodendron ex gr. longicarpus and Rhabdopleurites primaevus exhibits a distinct dimorphism, comprising: (1) thinner, wavy and anastomosing/branching fusellar fibrils proper, producing a tight three-dimensional meshwork; and (2) long, more or less straight and unbranched cortical fibrils, sometimes beaded, and arranged in parallel. These fibrils are similar to the fusellar and cortical fibrils of graptolites, respectively. Until now, dimorphic fibrils and their arrangement within fusellar tissue were regarded as unique characters of the Graptolithina. In general, the fibrillar material of these fossils is partially preserved in the form of flaky material (new term) composed of flakes (new term). Flakes are interpreted as flattened structures originating from the fusion of several neighbouring tightly packed fibrils. A Permian rhabdopleurid, referred to as Diplohydra sp., reveals a fabric and pattern of fusellar tissue similar to that of both Ordovician rhabdopleurids but devoid (?) of cortical fibrils. The results presented here question views that: (1) substantial differences in fabric and pattern of fusellar tissue exist between fossil pterobranchs and graptolites; and (2) the ultrastructure of pterobranch periderm has remained unchanged at least since the Ordovician. The Palaeozoic rhabdopleurids investigated are closer ultrastructurally to graptolites than to contemporary pterobranchs. The pterobranchs and the graptolites should be treated as members of one class - the Graptolithoidea.

Opis:
The paper considers the potential for new discoveries of gas accumulations in the Rotliegend Basin on the basis of the analysis of reservoir and hydrochemical tests and the results of reservoir simulations. Several reservoir simulations carried out in the study area (history of production and history matching) demonstrate the regional migration of reservoir waters. The integration of the simulations with mathematical calculations (in consistency with Hubbert’s theory) and with hydrochemical results permits recognition of the regional hydrody- namics and the potential localization of gas fields. In an analysis of the current hydrodynamic and hydrochemical conditions of reservoir waters in the Rotliegend (Lower Permian) strata, attention was focused on part of the sedi- mentary Rotliegend Basin, located south of the Wolsztyn-Pogorzela High, utilizing materials available from drilling and noting the differences between this area and the northern sub-basin. The current hydrogeological conditions and the dynamics of fluid transfer in the Rotliegend Basin are an effect of structural rearrangement during the Laramide orogeny. The basin hypsometry, resulting from the Laramide movements, became the decisive factor that controlled the filtration of groundwater. The recent hydrodynamic characteristics of migrating reservoir waters are reflected in the P-T (fluid pressure and temperature gradient) distribution pattern. Hence, the analysis of this distribution may reveal reactions that have taken place over time. It must be emphasized that clusters of gas fields are located in the zones occupied by stagnant groundwater (rNa/rCl<0.75) under hydrostatic (or slightly higher) pressure.

A collection of solitary rugose corals collected from the Treskelodden Formation of the Kruseryggen Hill, Hornsund area, south Spitsbergen, consists of 30 specimens representing the Bothrophyllidae family with the genera Bothrophyllum, Caninophyllum, Hornsundia, and Timania (5 species), and an indeterminate family with the genus Svalbardphyllum (one species). These large, dissepimental forms, dating from the Early Sakmarian (Tastubian), indicate a warm-water environment. The lithology, the thickness of the succession, the reddish hue and the abrasion of the fossils indicate that the area of the inner Hornsund showed a relief that enabled considerable erosion of the elevated areas and redeposition of the fossils at remote locations. The changing morphology of this area during the Early Permian was probably influenced by synsedimentary block tectonics.

Opis:
The Upper Permian Boda Claystone Formation (BCF) in SW Hungary has been previously been identified as a saline lake deposit. A country-wide screening found this 800-1000 m thick succession the most suitable for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste in Hungary, and research into this formation has consequently been intensified since. The investigations included a detailed study of the sedimentological characteristics. Data obtained by mapping of the 25 km2 outcrop area of the formation and from more than 40 boreholes were processed. The sedimentary structures were investigated on outcrop to microscopic scales, and cycles in the succession were interpreted. The main lithofacies, sedimentary structures and ichnofossils are presented. They indicate that the major part of the succession was deposited in a playa mudflat and is not of lacustrine origin in a strict sense. The lake sediments are represented by laminated and ripple-marked/flaser-type cross-laminated claystones and siltstones and by massive dolomites; trace fossils include crawling traces and burrows. Partial or complete drying out of the lake commonly occurred after the formation of carbonate mud by evaporation. Periodic fluvial influx is recorded by cross-bedded sandstones and unsorted gravelly sandstones of up to pebble-sized angular grains. Fenestral and stromatolitic structures reflect the repeated appearance of playa mudflat conditions. The silty claystones, which compose the major part of the succession, lost their primary structures due to pedogenic processes and indicate prolonged subaerial intervals with soil formation and only ephemeral inundations. The presence of pedogenic carbonate concretions supports the interpretation of an arid climate and a relatively shallow groundwater table. Drying-out events shown by desiccation cracks and authigenic breccias can be traced all over the succession. The various facies form small-scale sedimentary cycles showing a shallowing-upward trend and the growing influence of aridity and subaerial exposure.

Opis:
The basal Zechstein succession in SW Poland is dominated by breccias and/or conglomerates or extraclast-bearing bioclastic limestones, which were deposited during rapid flooding of the pre-existing intracontinental basin in the early Lopingian (Late Permian). Of these, the boulder-cobble breccias and conglomerates are interpreted as deposited in a rocky shore-zone where density flows and upwelling prevailed. The breccias gradually pass up into bryozoan (or other bioclastics) grainstones. The matrix-supported breccias were deposited as large extraclasts and blocks of Carboniferous rock were rolled down or detached from a cliff and were then either embedded into a carbonate sand or formed a framework supplying voids that could be colonized by tubular encrusting foraminifers. These foraminifers abound in all basal Zechstein facies (except in the debris-flow deposits) and are attributed to Palaeonubecularia. The associated faunas include other foraminifers (uniserial and hemigordiopsids), bryozoans, brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods, and microbial deposits. The prolific growth of tubular encrusting foraminifers has resulted from nutrient supply from the basin by upwelling. Botryoidal aragonite cements (also interpreted as due to upwelling) also characterize the basal Zechstein strata, although they were previously reported only from the upper Zechstein Limestone. The ẟI3C values of the basal Zechstein deposits show small variation and oscillated around 4.0%o, suggesting that these deposits are younger than the Kupferschiefer.

The taphonomy of Early Permian vertebrates from a sandy facies at the base of the Taquaral Member, Irati Formation, was surveyed in order to acquire data for the interpretation of the sedimentary processes and paleoenvironment of deposition. Six outcrops from the Rio Claro municipality and surrounding areas, from the Brazilian State of São Paulo, were investigated. The vertebrate groups are Chondrichthyes (Xenacanthiformes, Ctenacanthiformes and Petalodontiformes), Osteichthyes (Actinopterygii and Sarcopterygii) and Tetrapodomorpha. They occur as loose teeth, scales, spines and bone remains. The sandy facies is characterized by fining upward deposition. The coarser sandstone immediately above the underlying Tatuí Formation is rich in Chondrichthyes. However, the fine sandstone above, immediately beneath the silty shale facies, is devoid of Chondrichthyes, though Osteichthyes scales, teeth and bones were present. The taphonomy is important for inferring sedimentary processes and then the paleoenvironments. The poor sorting of the sandstone and the presence of fossils that are mostly abraded or worn are indicative of a high energy environment. In contrast, the presence of fossils in a good state of preservation, some without abrasion and breakages are indicative of only limited transport. Differences of fossil spatial density, numbers of specimens and taxa may be explained by the dynamics of deposition, from details of the palaeoenvironment can be obtained.

The presence of Fe-silicides, extremely rare mineral phases were documented in the Permian Cu-bearing ore formation in the Fore-Sudetic Monocline (Polkowice-Sieroszowice and Rudna mines, SW Poland). It is a first report of their occurrence within rocks of Late Palaeozoic age. The Fe-Si alloys forme spherules of various structure and chemical composition. The silicide spherules were found in the flotation concentrates prepared from the copper ore. Their composition varies from FeSi (fersilicite) to Fe2Si3 or Fe4Si9. A dominant constituent is Fe5Si3 (xifengite) with admixtures of P, Ti, Cr and Mn. Native Si and Ti were detected in the marginal part of spherules. The current knowledge do not permit to determine unequivocally whether the Fe-silicide spherules formed as a result of Permian cosmic dust or constitute terrestrial magmatic material of ultramafic character transported into a sedimentary basin from the adjacent terrain.

Opis:
In some extant ectotherms, the third eye (or pineal eye) is a photosensitive organ located in the parietal foramen on the midline of the skull roof. The pineal eye sends information regarding exposure to sunlight to the pineal complex, a region of the brain devoted to the regulation of body temperature, reproductive synchrony, and biological rhythms. The parietal foramen is absent in mammals but present in most of the closest extinct relatives of mammals, the Therapsida. A broad ranging survey of the occurrence and size of the parietal foramen in different South African therapsid taxa demonstrates that through time the parietal foramen tends, in a convergent manner, to become smaller and is absent more frequently in eutherocephalians (Akidnognathiidae, Whaitsiidae, and Baurioidea) and non-mammaliaform eucynodonts. Among the latter, the Probainognathia, the lineage leading to mammaliaforms, are the only one to achieve the complete loss of the parietal foramen. These results suggest a gradual and convergent loss of the photoreceptive function of the pineal organ and degeneration of the third eye. Given the role of the pineal organ to achieve fine-tuned thermoregulation in ectotherms (i.e., “cold-blooded” vertebrates), the gradual loss of the parietal foramen through time in the Karoo stratigraphic succession may be correlated with the transition from a mesothermic metabolism to a high metabolic rate (endothermy) in mammalian ancestry. The appearance in the eye of melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells replacing the photoreceptive role of the pineal eye could also have accompanied its loss.

This study represents a re-investigation of two historical fossil discoveries, Callibrachion gaudryi (Artinskian of France) and Datheosaurus macrourus (Gzhelian of Poland), that were originally classified as haptodontine-grade sphenacodontians and have been lately treated as nomina dubia. Both taxa are here identified as basal caseasaurs based on their overall proportions as well as dental and osteological characteristics that differentiate them from any other major synapsid subclade. As a result of poor preservation, no distinct autapomorphies can be recognized. However, our detailed investigations of the virtually complete skeletons in the light of recent progress in basal synapsid research allow a novel interpretation of their phylogenetic positions. Datheosaurus might represent an eothyridid or basal caseid. Callibrachion shares some similarities with the more derived North American genus Casea. These new observations on Datheosaurus and Callibrachion provide new insights into the early diversification of caseasaurs, reflecting an evolutionary stage that lacks spatulate teeth and broadened phalanges that are typical for other caseid species. Along with Eocasea, the former ghost lineage to the Late Pennsylvanian origin of Caseasauria is further closed. For the first time, the presence of basal caseasaurs in Europe is documented.

Investigations of the Upper Permian strata in the Iran−Transcaucasia resulted in identification of 32 ammonoid genera. The majority of ammonoids in this collection belong to the order Ceratitida (75%). Among Dzhulfian ceratitid ammonoids representatives of the family Araxoceratidae (Otoceratoidea) are most abundant. The assemblage structure changed radically during latest Permian (Dorashamian) time, bringing a domination of the family Dzhulfitidae. The Induan (Lower Triassic) succession in the Verkhoyansk area provided a few groups of ammonoids which are Palaeozoic in type: families Episageceratidae (Episageceras), Xenodiscidae (Aldanoceras and Metophiceras), and Dzhulfitidae (Tompophiceras) and superfamily Otoceratoidea (Otoceras and Vavilovites). It demonstrates the survival of ammonoids belonging to these groups the Permian–Triassic (P–T) boundary extinction event and their quick migration to the vast ar− eas of higher latitudes (together with some representatives of the Mesozoic−type families). Induan–Olenekian ammonoid successions in South Primorye, Mangyshlak, and Arctic Siberia illustrate the high rate of Early Triassic ammonoid recov− ery in both the Tethys and the Boreal realm. New ammonoid taxa are described: Proptychitina subordo nov., Ussuritina subordo nov., Subbalhaeceras shigetai gen. and sp. nov. (Flemingitidae), Mesohedenstroemia olgae sp. nov. (Heden− strormiidae), and Inyoites sedini sp. nov. (Inyoitidae).

The origin of tympanic hearing in early synapsids is still controversial, because little is known about their inner ear and the function of their sound conducting apparatus. Here I describe the earliest known tympanic ear in the synapsid lineage, the ear of Pristerodon (Therapsida, Anomodontia) from the Late Permian of South Africa, which was virtually reconstructed from neutron tomographic data. Although Pristerodon is not a direct ancestor of mammals, its inner ear with distinctive cochlear cavity represents a connecting link between the primitive therapsid inner ear and the mammalian inner ear. The anatomy of the sound conducting apparatus of Pristerodon and the increased sound pressure transformer ratio points to a sensitivity to airborne sound. Furthermore, the origins of the cochlea and impedance matching hearing in synapsids coincided with the loss of contact between head and substrate, which already took place at least in Late Permian therapsids even before the postdentary bones became detached from the mandible.

Opis:
The Upper Rotliegend deposits of the western part of the Poznań Basin, Poland, represent three main sedimentary environments: aeolian desert (dunes and sand sheets), alluvial plain (alluvial covers with wadi deposits) and marginal playa. In arid periods, dunes prograded into areas dominated by alluvial sedimentation. During wet periods, alluvial deposits eroded the aeolian deposits and prograded onto dune fields. Playa sediments were deposited among aeolian or alluvial sediments during periodic expansions of the playa. These aeolian, alluvial and playa deposits are arranged in depositional sequences. Boundaries between sequences are marked by rapid changes in depositional facies; and by erosional bounding surfaces. Maximum Wetting Surfaces have been distinguished within some parts of the depositional sequences, which enable regional correlations. The sections studied are composed of thick sequences of sand and sand-gravel sheets. The sand sheets represent periods of stratigraphic condensation. Systems of sand sheets are typical of marginal areas of ergs. We distinguish nine depositional complexes (units) numbered 1-9 from base to top, respectively. These subdivisions are based on the interpretation of the sedimentological record in palaeoclimatic terms, and in terms of major erosional boundaries, which are probably of regional extent. In the aeolian deposits, major boundaries are associated with deflation surfaces related to the stabilization of groundwater levels. In the marginal playa deposits, the most important boundaries are correlated to transgressive surfaces that developed during playa expansion. Time gaps represented by the boundaries and the scale of erosion below them, are difficult to estimate. The depositional system of the Upper Rotliegend was dominated by sand and sand-gravel sheets, and is either a unique feature in the entire Southern Permian Basin or, as we assume, sand sheets occur more com monly in the Rotliegend than has been previously thought.

Forward seismic modelling can aid seismic studies of the pre-Zechstein strata in areas of developed salt tectonics, such as the Obrzycko–Szamotuły region, NW Polish Basin. The results not only can be used for seismic interpretation, but also can support the planning of survey methodology and the workflow of seismic data processing. This paper presents the results of modelling that was carried out, before the acquisition of the regional-scale, seismic line Obrzycko-1–Zabartowo-1–Zabartowo-2 (Górecki, 2010). An interpreted, seismic transect was used to build a basic, seismic-geological model. The modelling was based on seismic ray theory. The zero-offset mo- delling (theoretical wave field) for different geometries of salt structures showed that an increase in salt thickness resulted in a pull-up of reflection events, related to the sub-salt horizons. The incorporation of faults and salt overhangs into a model significantly complicated the seismic wave field. The results of offset modelling, pre- sented in this paper as seismic ray tracing and common-shot gathers, proved that (1) the seismic response of the Rotliegend (Permian) formations can be recorded, despite the presence of the overlying salt pillows and diapirs, if offsets several kilometres long are used, and (2) the complex configuration of seismic reflectors (diapirs with salt overhangs, faults) gives rise to complicated, seismic ray paths that may cause difficulties in common-depth-point stacking and therefore decrease the quality of the seismic records.

Sphenacodontid synapsids were major components of early Permian ecosystems. Despite their abundance in the North American part of Pangaea, they are much rarer in Europe. Among the few described European taxa is Neosaurus cynodus, from the La Serre Horst, Eastern France. This species is represented by a single specimen, and its validity has been questioned. A detailed revision of its anatomy shows that sphenacodontids were also present in the Lodève Basin, Southern France. The presence of several synapomorphies of sphenacodontids—including the teardrop-shaped teeth—supports the assignment of the French material to the Sphenacodontidae, but it is too fragmentary for more precise identification. The discovery of sphenacodontids in the Viala Formation of the Lodève Basin provides additional information about their ecological preferences and environment, supporting the supposed semi-arid climate and floodplain setting of this formation. The Viala vertebrate assemblage includes aquatic branchiosaurs and xenacanthids, amphibious eryopoids, and terrestrial diadectids and sphenacodontids. This composition is very close to that of the contemporaneous assemblages of Texas and Oklahoma, once thought to be typical of North American lowland deposits, and thus supports the biogeographic affinities of North American and European continental early Permian ecosystems.

Hydrocarbon generation in the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic potential source rocks of the Polish Basin was investigated by 1-D thermal maturity modelling in 90 boreholes across the basin. This identified major zones potentially worthy of further exploration efforts. The maximum burial depth of the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic reached >5 km during the Late Cretaceous leading to maximum thermal maturity of organic matter. Hydrocarbon generation development reveals considerable differences between particular zones of the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic. The kerogen transformation ratio (TR) in the Zechstein Main Dolomite reached values approaching 100% along the basin axis. The TR in the Upper Triassic source rocks is generally lower than in the Zechstein Main Dolomite due to lesser burial. The Upper Triassic source rocks have the highest TR values (>50%) along the basin axis, in the area between boreholes Piła IG 1 and Piotrków Trybunalski IG 1, with the most pronounced zone in the Krośniewice Trough (i.e., between the Krośniewice IG 1 and Budziszewice IG 1 boreholes), where the TR reached >90%. The Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic entered the oil window in the Late Triassic to Early–Middle Jurassic, respectively. Hydrocarbon generation continued until the Late Cretaceous, and was completed during tectonic inversion of the basin.

Mafic, monogenetic volcanism is increasingly recognized as a common manifestation of post-collisional volcanism in late Variscan, Permo-Carboniferous intramontane basins of Central Europe. Although identification of individual eruptive centres is not easy in these ancient successions, the Permian Rožmitál andesites in the Intra-Sudetic Basin (NE Bohemian Massif) provide an exceptionally detailed record of explosive, effusive and high-level intrusive activity. Based on field study and petrographic and geochemical data on pyroclastic and coherent rocks, the Rožmitál succession is interpreted as the proximal part of a tuff ring several hundred metres in diameter. Initial accumulation of pyroclastic fall and surge deposits occurred during phreatomagmatic eruptions, with transitions towards Strombolian eruptions. Gullies filled with reworked tephra document periods of erosion and redeposition. Andesitic blocky lavas capped the volcaniclastic succession. Invasion of lavas into unconsolidated sediments and emplacement of shallow-level intrusions in near-vent sections resulted in the formation of jigsaw- and randomly-textured peperites. Most geochemical differences between coherent andesites and pyroclastic rocks can be linked to incorporation of quartz-rich sediments during the explosive eruptive processes and to later cementation of the volcaniclastic deposits by dolomite. The Rožmitál tuff ring could have been one of several phreatomagmatic centres in a monogenetic volcanic field located on an alluvial plain.

The teeth of a well known late Palaeozoic cladodont chondrichthyan, “Cladodus” occidentalis from Russia, USA, and England are restudied and a new generic name, Glikmanius gen. nov., is proposed for this species. Yet another tooth−based species, formerly described as ?Symmorium myachkovensis, occurring on the Russian Platform and in Nebraska, is considered to belong to the newly erected genus. Although there is no direct evidence that Glikmanius possessed fin spines, the broad similarity between its teeth and those of Ctenacanthus compressus suggests it had a ctenacanthiform affinity. The possible relationships between Glikmanius, Cladodus sensu stricto, “Ctenacanthus” costellatus, and Heslerodus, are suggested. However, the proposition put forward by an earlier author that the teeth of Heslerodus might represent the lower jaw dentition of G. myachkovensis, is rejected. The overall resemblance of Glikmanius teeth and those of Cladoselache and Squatinactis is recognised as convergent.

Opis:
The distant evolutionary ancestry of mammals is documented by a rich therapsid fossil record. While sphenacodontid synapsids are considered the sister−group of therapsids, the place of origin of therapsids is an enigma, largely because of a long standing morphological and temporal gap (Olson’s Gap) in their fossil record. We describe a new large predatory synapsid, Raranimus dashankouensis gen. et sp. nov., from the Middle Permian of Dashankou in China which has a unique combination of therapsid and sphenacodontid features. This specimen is of great significance asit is a basal therapsid which is the sister taxon to all other therapsids. The fact that it was found in association with Early Permian tetrapods (Anakamacops and Belebey) suggests that it is the oldest therapsid and provides the first evidence of therapsid−bearing rocks which cover Olson’s Gap. It further supports that therapsids may have had a Laurasian rather than Gondwanan origin.

The types of the species belonging to the fusulinid genera Schubertella and Eoschubertella were examined from publications and type collections. Eoschubertella in general possesses all the features of Schubertella and therefore is a junior synonym of the latter. However, the concept of Eoschubertella best describes the genus Schubertina with its type species Schubertina curculi. Schubertina is closely related to the newly established genus Grovesella the concept of which is emended in this paper. Besides Schubertella, Schubertina, and Grovesella, the genera Mesoschubertella, Biwaella are reviewed and three new species, Grovesella nevadensis, Biwaella zhikalyaki, and Biwaella poletaevi, are described. The phylogenetic relationships of all Pennsylvanian–Cisuralian schubertellids are also proposed. Barrel−shaped Grovesella suggested being the very first schubertellid that appears sometimes in the middle–late Bashkirian time. In late Bashkirian it is then developed into ovoid to fusiform Schubertina. The latter genus gave rise into Schubertella in early Moscovian. First Fusiella derived from Schubertella in late Moscovian, Biwaella—in early Gzhelian and Boultonia—in late Gzhelian time. Genus Mesoschubertella also developed from Schubertella at least in Artinskian, but may be in late Sakmarian.

Black manganese oxides from the polymineral veins found in 1998 in the so-called diabases of Niedźwiedzia Góra near Kraków have been identified (XRD, IR, DTA-TG, SEM/EDS, EPMA/WDS) as intermediate members of the rancieite-takanelite series. In comparison with the minerals of this series described in the literature, they reveal elevated contents of iron and barium and relatively low contents of calcium. In the probable succession of components of the veins mentioned, the Mn oxides occupy the before last position: goethite +/- saponite - tension - barite, thin prismatic-acicular quartz - leaching - Mn oxides, prismatic quartz. They must have crystallized from descensive waters associated with surface weathering of the diabases, which took place when overlaying Carboniferous rocks had been eroded. The weathering diabases were a probable source of manganese.

Praca stanowi pierwsze kompleksowe opracowanie biostratygrafii utworów permu górnego i triasu niecki Nidy. Wyróżniono dziesięć poziomów palinologicznych. Wyniki badań mikroflorystycznych potwierdziły problematyczną dotychczas obecność utworów późnego anizyku i wczesnego ladynu.
Ten miospore zones are identified in the Upper Permian and Triassic succession of the Nida Basin. This is the first complete biostratigraphical study of these sediments. The palynological investigation confirmed the presence of the late Anisian and early Ladinian. In addition, they allowed determining more precisely the boundaries between Induan and Olenekian as well as Norian and Rhaetian. Xeromorphic elements dominate the Upper Permian and Triassic palynomorph spectra from the Nida Basin and reflect a mainly dry palaeoclimate. Significant numbers of hygromorphic elements indicating temporarily humid phases, occur in the Olenekian, Ladinian, Norian and Rhaetian. Continental sedimentation in fluvial, lacustrine, coastal, playa and sabkha environments prevailed during most of the Late Permian and Triassic but was interrupted by marine transgressions in the late Wuchiapingian, early Induan, Anisian as well as Ladinian.

System naftowy karbon–czerwony spągowiec w niemiecko-holenderskiej części basenu wykazuje szereg podobieństw i różnic w stosunku do polskiej części basenu. Głębokości występowania złóż gazu w niemiecko-holenderskiej części basenu są większe (1000–5300 m) niż w polskiej (1000–3700 m) i do 4000 m w strefach gazu zamkniętego (tight gas). Spowodowało to w efekcie zróżnicowanie głębokości pogrążenia i czasu występowania procesów generowania, migracji i akumulacji gazu, oraz zróżnicowanie szeregu pokarbońskich skał zbiornikowych i uszczelniających. Procesy generowania migracji i akumulacji gazów przebiegały wieloetapowo: od późnego karbonu aż do neogenu włącznie.
Carboniferous-Rotliegend Petroleum System in the German-Dutch part of the South Permian basin shows a number of similarities and differences in relation to the Polish part of the basin. Depth of occurrence of gas deposits in the German-Dutch part of the basin are larger (~1000–5300 m) than in Poland (~1000–3700 m) with the maximum of up to 4000 m in the tight gas zone. Gases show significant variation of chemical composition and physical parameters. The average methane content in the German-Dutch part of the basin ranges from 30 to 95% rising rapidly towards the west, whilst in the Polish part, the average methane content varies significantly in different areas of the basin (from several up to 90%). Gases that accumulated mainly in the Rotliegend, were generated predominantly by Westphalian source rocks (bituminous coals) in the German-Dutch part of the basin, and only subordinately by Lower Carboniferous source rocks. German-Dutch basin was dissected by numerous Mesozoic faults, associated with horsts, grabens, and platforms. It contributed to the differentiation of burial depth and timing of the generation processes, to the migration and accumulation of gas, and to the diversification of a number of post-Carboniferous reservoir rocks and seals. The processes of gas generation, migration and accumulation included several stages: from Late Carboniferous through Neogene.

The uppermost Permian in the NWHoly Cross Mountains is represented by red mudstones with sandstone and conglomerate interbeds, forming the PZt cyclothem (dated by miospores of the Lueckisporites virkkiae Bc Zone), which grade upwards into the Siodta Formation. This succession is overlain by sandstones and mudstones of the Jaworzna Formation yielding the lowermost Triassic spore-pollen assemblage of the Lundbladispora obsoleta- Protohaploxypinus pantii Zone. Mudstones of the Siodta Formation reveal mottling structure with numerous root traces, rhizobreciation, as well as nodular and bedded calcretes. The root -Mader structures are represented by calcite tubules and root moulds, the latter filled with dark red calcareous mudstones. The presence of root traces in the Siodta Formation clearly indicates an increase of substrate moisture in contrast to the underlying PZt cyclothem. The mottled red mudstones were deposited in the playa-lacustrine depositional system and lost their primary structure due to rooting and other pedogenic processes. Carbonate nodules and thin indurated calcretes are related to periods of lower sediment accumulation rate or even non-deposition periods favouring development of continental carbonates. A relatively rapid switch to the alluvial depositional system represented by the Jaworzna Formation appears to be coeval to the increased sediment flux in terrestrial setting, postulated by Newell et al. (2010) at the Permo-Triassic boundary, driven by a devegetation event of upland catchments.

The distribution of Permian alluvial fan lithofacies in a quarry at Zygmuntówka near Chęciny, Holy Cross Mts., in southern Poland was investigated using ground penetrating radar (GPR) in order to create a training image for multiple point statistics (MPS) reconstructions of alluvial fan sedimentary facies. Five pseudo-3D GPR datasets were collected, processed and uploaded for interpretation into SKUA-GOCAD 3D geological modelling software. Three radar facies were distinguished based on the 3D geometrical pattern of radar reflections and linked to lithofacies described from the quarry by Zbroja et al. (1998). A statistical summary showed that ~50% of the lithofacies resulted from gravity flows (mostly non-cohesive), while the remaining proportion was deposited by unconfined and confined flash floods. Fluvial sedimentary facies left by waning of catastrophic floods or reworking during fair weather, alihough not prevalent, could not be distinguished from confined flood deposits based only on GPR data. The GPR datasets together with information from field observations were used to carry out MPS simulations and estimate the most probable 3D model of lithofacies at the quarry scale. This model will in turn serve as a training image for MPS reconstructions of alluvial-fan facies of Rotliegend conglomerates in the multi-scale geological model of the Gorzów Block (western Poland).

The geosite Zygmuntówka (Sigismund ) quarry, located at Czerwona Góra near Chęciny in SW part of the Holy Cross Mountains, is the oldest and the most famous among the so-called Chęciny „marble” quarries which provided stones for constructing numerous important buildings in the region and beyond. Upper Permian conglomerates (Czerwona Góra Formation), with a thickness of several tens of metres, outcrop in this area. The conglomerates are clast- and locally mud-supported and consist of light grey and beige carbonate pebbles and cobbles chaotically distributed within the reddish-brown silty-carbonate-ferriferous matrix. The conglomerates represent continental alluvial fan deposits deposited under arid and semiarid climate conditions. The quarry, of a regional rank, is well suited for both geoeducation and geotourism purposes.

Intensywne badania geologiczne, prowadzone od połowy ub. wieku na omawianym obszarze przedsudeckim, umożliwiły rozpoznanie wystąpień późnopermskich (cechsztyn) soli kamiennych i potasowo-magnezowych. Zaowocowało to udokumentowaniem 2 złóż soli kamiennej: Sieroszowice i Bądzów o zasobach bilansowych wynoszących 4,09 mld Mg, w tym 0,49 mld Mg zasobów przemysłowych.
Intensive geological prospection in the Fore-Sudetic area in the second half of the 20th century enabled to recognize occurrences of late Permian (Zechstein) rock and potash salts and to contour two rock salt deposits: Sieroszowice and Bądzów (with the registered anticipated economic resources of 4.09 billion Mg and economic resources of 0.49 billion Mg), as well as to estimate the prognostic rock salt resources in six copper deposits at ca. 45.19 billion Mg. To contour the prospective areas of Zechstein rock and potash salts occurrences in the Fore-Sudetic area and to estimate their predicted (prognostic and prospective) resources, 34 map sheets at scale of 1:200,000 have been compiled. Twenty-eight map sheets have been constructed for four rock salt seams, representing the four Zechstein cyclothems (PZ1 to PZ4), and six map sheets for two potash-bearing series of the PZ2 and PZ3 cyclothems. The predicted rock salt resources, estimated for 42 prospective areas, are more than 1x1012 Mg, covering the total acrea of over 18.5 thousands km2. The final amount of these resources, reduced by the amount of resources of the above-mentioned six copper deposits, is over 995.7 billion Mg. Including the documented resources of two salt deposits, the total amount of Zechstein rock salt, in the study area down to a depth of 2 km is estimated at ca. 1000 billion Mg. The predicted resources of Zechstein potash salts in nine prospective areas were estimated at ca. 3.3 billion Mg with the total area of over 456 km2. Many prospective areas with significant thicknesses of rock salt seams could be managed both for salt production (underground and leaching mines) and as cavern storages (for hydrocarbons or hydrogen) and waste disposals. Only some of the indicated areas of potash salts could be considered for future mining, however, after their detailed geological surveying and resource calculation.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of sedimentological studies of Zechstein marine deposits occurring in the Wleń Graben, a tectonic unit located in the southeastern part of the North Sudetic Synclinorium (NSS; Western Sudetes, SW Poland). Owing to poor exposure, small thickness, and lack of palaeontological data, the stratigraphy and age of these rocks were determined solely on the basis of analogies with adjacent areas. New findings described here, including faunal remains (remains of bivalves, including Liebea sp.), geopetal structures, clastic fills of halite crystals, moulds and bioturbation, shed new light on the environmental interpretations of the Zechstein in this part of the NSS. It should be assumed that at least two types of deposit may be assigned to the marine Zechstein in the Wleń Graben area, namely sparitic and microsparitic dolomite (PZ3) and the overlying deposits of the heterolithic series (PZt). These deposits were formed during the late Zechstein transgression, when the study area was in the marginal southwesternmost part of a newly formed shallow-marine bay of the Polish Zechstein Basin. In the central part of the present-day Wleń Graben, a shallow-marine bay (lagoon?) was dominated by carbonate sedimentation. A north-dipping mud plain, periodically flooded by a shallow sea, occurred in the southern part of the area. The paper summarises the present state of research on Permian deposits in the Wleń Graben, the first comprehensive lithostratigraphic scheme is suggested, and a new concept of the palaeogeographic evolution of the area in the Early and Late Permian is proposed.

Scolecodonts and conodonts are described from five samples of three cores from the Svalis Dome, central Barents Sea. The conodont species Mesogondolella rosenkrantzi and Neospathodus svalbardensis confirm latest Permian (Dzulfian) and earliest Triassic (Dienerian) ages for the investigated intervals. Correlation with adjacent conodont distribution indicates a shorter depositional gap in the late Permian than is evident on Svalbard. The conodont elements show little thermal alteration with CAI (colour alteration index) values between 1.0 and 1.5 indicating a maximum burial temperature of 50—90°C. The scolecodonts described herein have important evolutionary and distribution implications for polychaetes: the order Eunicida shows a richer diversification in the Permian than previously known; the family Paulinitidae survived at least until the Late Permian; the family Hartmaniellidae diversified already in the late Palaeozoic; some forms are considered as representatives of unknown species and genera; the order Phyllodocida originated already in the latest Palaeozoic.
Z rdzeni trzech wierceń wykonanych na wysadzie solnym Svalis na Morzu Barentsa opisano dobrze zachowane skolekodonty i konodonty. Konodonty Mesogondolella rosenkrantzi i Neospathodus svalbardensis potwierdzaja późnopermski (dżulf) i wczesnotriasowy (diener) wiek badanych sekwencji.

W ostatnich latach kopalnia podjęła uboczną produkcję soli różowej przeznaczonej do wytwarzania tzw. galanterii solnej. Podjęte zostały wstępne badania mające na celu udokumentowanie geologicznej pozycji w złożu "galanteryjnych" odmian soli różowej. Prezentowana praca zawiera charakterystykę właściwości i geologicznych warunków występowania oraz klasyfikację i sposoby pozyskiwania soli różowej dla celów produkcji galanteryjnej ze złoża kłodawskiego.
Colored rock salt types, especially pink, orange and red ones, become a more demand material for production of fancy salt goods such as salt lamps, chandelier, sculptures etc. Colored rock salts occur in many salt formations and deposits in Europe and in the world as it was illustrated by a short review of selected rock salt deposits. In Poland the discussed colored rock salts are exploited only in one salt deposit, located in the Kłodawa salt diaper (by the "Kłodawa" Salt Mine), mainly for alimentary and chemical industry and for road treatment. Last years the mine has excavated a small amount of pink salt for production of mentioned above salt fancy goods and the increased demand for this raw material initiated studies on characteristics and geological position of pink salt within the salt deposit, enabling future prediction and calculation of its resources. Preliminary characteristics of features and the geological situation as well as a classification and exploitation methods of pink rock salt were presented in the paper.

This paper presents classification of the Permian and Triassic paleokarst forms in the Świętokrzyskie Mts, systematic description of the groups of forms and their fillings as well as conclusions concerning environmental conditions of their development. Four groups were distinguished among paleokarst forms developed before the deposition of the Buntsandstein whereas five ones developed during the Buntsandstein deposition (proceeding diachronically) and/or the Middle Triassic time. The Permian-Triassic paleokarst was conditioned by the Variscan tectonic movements and up-lift as well as subsequent formation of the Danish-Polish Trough. The Permian karst developed in the area of mountainous morphology and were often connected with hydrothermal processes. The Triassic karst formed due to tectonic activity stimulating morphological rejuvenation of the region. Wide and low passages representing one of the Triassic paleokarst group presumably formed in fresh and sea waters mixing zone.

Opis:
The epidermal anatomy of Pseudoctenis samchokense is described revealing non−bennettitalean characters of these leaves from the Permo−Carboniferous of China (and Korea). The specimens were originally described as Pterophyllum samchokense suggesting a bennettitalean affinity. They can no longer be considered bennettitalean since their cuticles lack the distinctive brachyparacytic stomata of that clade. Pterophyllum was originally erected as a morphogenus for segmented leaves from the Mesozoic and has subsequently been clearly assigned to the Bennettitales. The segmented leaves from the Permo−Carboniferous of Shanxi and Hebei, China described herein require a new ordinal and generic assignment since the non−bennettitalean cuticular characters documented reinforce the uncertainties in attribution of any foliage older than Late Triassic to the Bennettitales. Based on leaf−architecture and epidermal anatomical characters, the specimens are at best assigned to the cycadalean genus Pseudoctenis. This genus was formerly known only from Mesozoic rocks. Consequently, the specimens are highly significant, as they are among the oldest known vegetative remains of cycads. Re−evaluation of the affinities of all specimens assigned to Pterophyllum from Palaeozoic rocks is thus essential. Based on a review of other Permian–Carboniferous fossil leaves assigned to Pterophyllum, we conclude that none yet reveals definitive bennettitalean characters.

Opis:
The question of the eastern extent of the Variscan externides in the Polish Lowlands is a subject of ongoing scientific debate. The key to resolve this problem is to provide a good seismic image of the pre-Permian strata. Unfortunately, the industrial seismic profiling brings sparse information from below the Zechstein, thus in 2003, a special seismic experiment called GRUNDY 2003 has been organised. The acquisition system was based on the deep seismic sounding equipment and was targeted at the recognition of Palaeozoic strata. The results in form of the 3D tomographic velocity field and the migrated depth section form the basis for the geological interpretation. Deduced geological model suggests the existence of two different geological media below the Permian strata. The likely interpretation is that it is the contact zone of the Variscan externides with their foreland. Obtained results are of a great importance for the hydrocarbons exploration perspectives.

Opis:
Determining the thermal maturity of palynomorph based on their color is a method commonly used in hydrocarbon prospecting. The color of the outer membrane of miospores (exine) changes as a result of heating from pale yellow to black depending on the paleotemperature. Currently, there are many palynomorph color scales correlated with the value of vitrinite reflectance, temperature of burial and hydrocarbon generation stages. Due to the varied material, both in taxonomic and morphological terms, the author used the TAI AMOCO scale. Furthermore, the share of individual kerogen groups in palynofacies was analyzed in terms of their hydrocarbon potential. The Upper Permian and Triassic deposits from eleven boreholes located in the north part of the Nida Basin were investigated. They showed that the Triassic and in the Upper Permian samples from the Milianów IG 1 borehole, are dominated by the pale yellow to orange color of spores and pollen grains, corresponding to a TAI index from 1 to 4, i.e. the pre-generation, dry gas and the early oil generation windows. In turn, only the samples of the Upper Permian from the Pągów IG 1 borehole are dominated by the brown color of miospores, which corresponds to a TAI index from 4+ to 5, i.e. the peak oil prone. Dominant vitrinite reflectance Ro varies from 0,4% to 0,6%, so the degree of organic matter maturity in the Upper Permian and Triassic deposits is not very high, which indicates relatively low temperatures of sediment diagenesis (< 80°C). Analysis of palynofacies showed that the Upper Permian and Triassic deposits contain mixed and structural kerogen. Mixed kerogen, occurring in carbonate rocks, contains amorphous fine-scattered kerogen and “fluffy” of algae origin, as well as structural kerogen of terrigeneous origin, mainly exinite and vitrinite. Mixed kerogen is characterized by oil potential, whereas structural kerogen – by gas-oil potential.

Opis:
The sedimentary succession of the Permian to Middle Triassic of the Albanian Alps is described, as part of the eastern Adria passive margin towards the Tethys. A carbonate ramp deepening towards NE in present day coordinates developed during the Middle Permian and was affected by block faulting with the deposition of carbonate breccia. The Early Triassic was characterized by intense terrigenous deposition with several cobble conglomerate units up to 80 m-thick, and by oolitic carbonate shoals. The fine clastic deposition ended gradually during the earliest Anisian and a wide calcarenitic ramp occupied the area, with small local carbonate mounds. Basinward, the red nodular limestone of the Han Bulog Formation was interbedded with calcarenitic material exported from the ramp. Drowning to more open conditions occurred towards the end of the Pelsonian. Subsequently, cherty limestone and tuffitic layers spread over the entire area. Towards the end of the Ladinian, with the end of the volcanic activity, red pelagic limestone was deposited locally for a short period. By the latest Ladinian most of the area returned to shallow-water conditions, with a peritidal carbonate platform. In the Theth area, in contrast, a basin with black organic-rich dolostone and limestone developed which seems to be unique in that part of the Adria passive margin. The occurrence of cobble conglomerate units in the Lower Triassic testifies to very active block faulting and high accommodation, not yet described for the area.

Opis:
An unusual 6–8 cm layer of prismatic cartilage and matrix containing some 8,800 teeth, coprolites, incomplete occipital spines, and denticles of Orthacanthus platypternus (Cope, 1883) occurs in the lower Permian (Artinskian) Craddock Bonebed in Texas, USA. It is the only species of shark present in the Clear Fork Group except for three worn Xenacanthus Beyrich, 1848 occipital spine fragments and two teeth of ?Lissodus (Polyacrodus) zideki (Johnson, 1981) (Hybodontoidei), both being the first occurrences in this unit. Analysis of measurements of teeth with complete bases randomly selected from 3,050 initially available teeth failed to reveal the presence of sexual dimorphism or the discrete presence of juveniles as expected, based on an independent study which identified the presence of Orthacanthus juvenile occipital spines. A few highly symmetrical small teeth are present, which had not been previously observed in the Texas lower Permian. They may be symphyseals and restricted only to juveniles. Other unusual teeth include germinal teeth and deformed teeth, both of which occur in the Clear Fork and underlying Wichita groups. One tooth displays an apparent example of the equivalent of an “enamel pearl” on one of its cusps. The most unusual teeth are those that appear to have undergone various stages of resorption. Only the lingual margin of the base is affected in which the apical button is resorbed to varying degrees until only the labial margin with the basal tubercle and the three cusps are all that remain. If the teeth were undergoing resorption, then the perplexing problem is why the apical button is resorbed and not the superjacent basal tubercle. Other vertebrate remains include palaeoniscoid scales and teeth and unidentified tetrapod bone fragments, jaw fragments, and teeth. Rare fragments of bones (scales?) bear a “comb edge” which have not been previously observed in the Texas lower Permian.

The aim of the study was to develop a bromine standard profile of the Polish Zechstein 2 (PZ2) analogue to the German Z2 bromine standard profile. Studies of the bromine content in salts were realized in five sections of the Kłodawa salt mine (central Poland); samples were taken from the Screening Older Halite unit, the Older Potash unit, the “Transitional Beds” and the Older Halite units. The material was analyzed in the Polish Geological Institute for the content of Cl, insolubles in water and Br. German partners (BGR) analyzed the content of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, SO4 and Br. Based on these components, the mineral composition and the bromine content of the halites were calculated. The Older Halite rocks are relatively pure rock salts with a NaCl content from 74 to 100% by weight; the bromine content in the halites varies between 31 and 341 μg/g halite. The “Transitional Beds” (Na2+K2) and the Older Potash (K2) units contain more sulphates (including secondary polyhalite). The Br content of the “Transitional Beds” varies from 76 to 269 μg/g. The highest concentrations correspond to those of potash salts and they vary from 275 to 974 Rg/g in section III. In the lowermost beds of the Na2 unit, the occurrence of polyhalite and particularly the abnormal high bromine values (up to 150 Rg/g) are probably due to the inflows of brines of higher salinity. The decreasing bromine values in the upper part indicate a reduced influence of external brines. The bromine distribution indicates that the Br content slightly increases in a long interval (10-120 m) from approx. 40 (60) to 90 (100) Rg/g. The slight increase of the bromine trend can be interpreted as a normal evaporation progress and is consistent with the lower parts of the German Hauptsalz unit regarding the bromide value. In contrast to the German lower Hauptsalz, small amounts of polyhalite can be observed locally in the Kłodawa sections. Upwards, over an interval of a few meters, the bromine content rapidly increases to approx. 300 Rg/g, indicating the dominance of evaporation in contrast to dilution by newly invading sea water and recycling of sediment. Neglecting the lowest part of the Older Halite (Na2) unit with the abnormal high bromine concentration and the altered top, the following characteristic trends can be recognized in its bromine profiles: (1) a subtle increasing bromine trend over a long vertical interval in the oldest layers reflecting ongoing sedimentation under conditions of continuous evaporation, (2) a very steep increase in the bromine values in the middle part of the profile, due to the fact that the basin did no longer participate in brine exchange, (3) small variations in the high bromine values of the overlying beds. The characteristics of the bromine standard profile enables stratigraphic correlation of the salt units with other localities. The bromine profile of the Younger Halite unit from the Kłodawa mine differs greatly from the German Z3 profile from the Görleben mine. The data presented here are preliminary; additional studies of some other sections in central Poland are required for developing a standard bromine profile for PZ3.

Analizując materiał pochodzący z utworów cechsztynu Polski, zaobserwowano pojawienie się zmienionych morfologicznie ziaren pyłku z gatunku Lueckisporites virkkiae Potonié et Klaus, stanowiącego główny składnik późnopermskich zespołów mikroflorystycznych. Zmiany te już wcześniej odnotował Visscher w zachodniej Europie (1971, 1972), nazywając zmienione formy normami. Dotyczyły one zwiększenia lub redukcji liczby worków powietrznych, zmiany ich kształtu i wielkości, pogrubienia egzyny ciałka centralnego i zagęszczenia jej struktury. Przyczyną powstania zmienionych form najprawdopodobniej był stres środowiskowy wywołany katastroficznymi zmianami klimatu w późnym permie, będącymi następstwem wzmożonej działalności wulkanicznej (Foster, Afonin, 2005).
The abnormal pollen grains of the Lueckisporites virkkiae Potonié et Klaus species were recorded in the Late Permian microfloristic assemblages from Poland. These morphologically mutated miospores were already described by Visscher in the Permian succession of Western Europe and became interpreted as evolutional forms called norms (1971, 1972). The most probable reason of such aberration was the environmental stress accompanied the catastrophic climatic changes in the Late Permian resulted from the high volcanic activity (Foster, Afonin, 2005).

Clastic dikes have been evidenced in Permian conglomerates occurring near Kudowa Zdrój in the Nachod Basin, the Sudetes, NE Bohemian Massif. The lithology of the dikes is the same as that of the polimictic conglomerate hosting them; they only differ in textural characteristics. The spatial orientation of the dikes points out to their genetic relationship with a nearby fault that, in a map view, separates Permian and Cretaceous formations. The dikes must have intruded after tectonic rotation of conglomerate beds on the fault to a position similar to the present one and they represent record of post-diagenetic seismotectonic events.

Opis:
Interpretacja jakościowa i ilościowa polegała na porównaniu parametrów otrzymanych z analizy obrazu tomograficznego z wcześniej uzyskanymi wynikami analiz laboratoryjnych obejmujących następujące metody badawcze: porozymetrię helową (Por.He), spektrometrię jądrowego rezonansu magnetycznego (NMR), porozymetrię rtęciową (Por.Hg) i przepuszczalność absolutną (przepuszcz). Utworzono macierze korelacji dla wszystkich dostępnych parametrów, do pracy wybrano korelacje istotne, o najwyższym współczynniku korelacji liniowej. Zaobserwowano istotne zależności liniowe pomiędzy parametrami wyznaczonymi z analizy obrazów CT i innych metod badawczych.
The main purpose of the study was to assess the usefulness of the results of quantitative interpretation of computed tomography (CT) images of rocks’ pore structure for the estimation of reservoir parameters, such as porosity and permeability. This study presents results of correlation analyses between the pore space parameters obtained from the analysis of computed tomography images and the results of standard laboratory tests. The research material consisted of samples representing Rotliegend sandstones of aeolian facies, collected from core material from wells located in the Fore-Sudetic Monocline. Several dozen samples were selected for analysis, for which 69 parameters were calculated. The qualitative and quantitative interpretation consisted in comparing the parameters obtained from the analysis of the tomographic images with the previously obtained results of laboratory analyzes including the following research methods: helium porosimetry (Por.He), nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR), mercury porosimetry (Por.Hg) and absolute permeability (let it pass). Correlation matrices for all available parameters were determined, significant correlations with the highest coefficient of linear correlation were selected as a subject of this work. Significant linear relationships were observed between the parameters determined from the analysis of CT images and other research methods. Models that were obtained allowed to estimate the permeability, porosity, and irreducible water content based on geometrical parameters obtained from tomographic images (shape factor, Euler characteristic or specific surface area). The important result of this work is the possibility to estimate petrophysical parameters based on the results of the non-destructive CT method only. In the case of tomographic imaging of whole cores, the obtained results allow for a preliminary estimation of the porosity and volume density distribution in the entire core, which may be helpful in selecting representative samples of core for detailed laboratory tests.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono podstawy teoretyczne modelowania i hydrodynamicznej klasyfikacji naftowych basenów osadowych.
Theoretical fundamentals of modelling and hydrodynamic classification of sedimentary oil basins are presented in the paper. Hydrodynamic classification of oil basins is based on the effects differentiating the liquid phase, especially the movement of reservoir fluids. Definition of this type of hydrodynamic basin lies in determining its development stage at present: before, during or after the invasion of infiltration waters. Bearing in mind data of reservoir pressures distribution, directions and flow rates of groundwaters, as well as properties of reservoir fluids, three main types of sedimentary basins have been distinguished: juvenile (centrifugal), transient (centripetal) and mature (static). Physical phenomena and interrelations taking place between accumulated hydrocarbons and the accompanying reservoir waters and pressures predestine the first type as most perspective; the third type is usually eliminated as non-perspective. The so far final results of hydrodynamic analyses for the Permian basin in the Fore-Sudetic Monocline prompt the conclusion that the basin is a very perspective juvenile (centrifugal) basin.

Opis:
The regional subdivisions of major structural complexes distinguished in the Polish territory have been systematically corrected and updated parallel with accumulation of new geological and geophysical data. Regional units are established not only basing on their tectonic characteristics but also on other criteria including sedimentary and subsidence development, magmatism, metamorphism and crustal structure. In future, new units should be defined and older ones redefined in a possibly objective, descriptive way. However, the interpretative approach is unavoidable particularly when older, largely concealed structural complexes are concerned. Therefore, the establishment of formal criteria and "official"regional subdivisions analogous to formal stratigraphic units, seems inappropriate. Proposed schemes or modifications of previous subdivisions will serve as consistent and clear regional reference framework in geological and geophysical studies if they will meet few basic methodological and terminological requirements. Among the most important prerequisites is a clear definition of boundaries of particular units against most recent solid geological maps in a scale of 1:1 000 000 or larger. In accordance with the outlined guidelines the authors' version of the regional framework of Polish sub-Cenozoic and sub-Permian (Variscan) geological units is presented. The subdivisions are based on the modified scheme published by Dadlez (1998) and that by Narkiewicz (2007), respectively. We did not attempt to present a pre-Variscan (Caledonian) regional framework, except for the stable area of the East European Platform devoid of the Devonian-Carboniferous cover. Given the present state of research, such subdivision would be very speculative, reflecting only one of several possible interpretative variants of the Polish Lowlands deep structure.

Opis:
The paper presents the detailed plate tectonic, paleogeographic, paleoenvironment and paleolithofacies maps for eight Late Paleozoic time intervals. These maps are dealing with the Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian time slices. The relationship of the continental configuration, lithofacies, tectonics and climate from the disassembly of Oldredia to the assembly of Pangea is clearly depicted on this series of reconstructions. The distribution of lithofacies shows climatic change associated with continental disassembly and assembly. The breakup of continents and origin of oceans generated basins related to rifting and passive margin development. The assembly of continents contributed to the formation of foreland basins. The subduction zones are related to the back--arc basins. The biological extinction events were perhaps related to the plate reorganization and mantle plume activity.
Artykuł przedstawia szczegółowe mapy obrazujące tektonikę płyt, paleogeografię, paleośrodowisko i paleolitofacje ośmiu przedziałów czasowych późnego paleozoiku. Mapy dotyczą szeregu przedziałów czasowych w obrębie dewonu, karbonu i permu.

Campyloprion Eastman, 1902 is a chondrichthyan having an arched symphyseal tooth whorl similar to that of Helicoprion Karpinsky, 1899, but less tightly coiled. The holotype of Campyloprion annectans Eastman, 1902, the type species of Campyloprion, is of unknown provenance, but is presumed to be from the Pennsylvanian of North America. Campyloprion ivanovi (Karpinsky, 1922) has been described from the Gzhelian of Russia. A partial symphyseal tooth whorl, designated as Campyloprion cf. C. ivanovi, is reported from the Missourian Tinajas Member of the Atrasado Formation of Socorro County, New Mexico, USA. Partial tooth whorls from the Virgilian Finis Shale and Jacksboro Limestone Members of the Graham Formation of northern Texas, USA, are designated as Campyloprion sp. Two partial tooth whorls from the Gzhelian of Russia that were previously referred to C. ivanovi are designated as Campyloprion cf. C. annectans. The age of Toxoprion lecontei (Dean, 1898), from Nevada, USA, is corrected from the Carboniferous to the early Permian. An alternative interpretation of the holotype of T. lecontei is presented, resulting in a reversal of its anterior-to-posterior orientation. The genera Helicoprion, Campyloprion, and Shaktauites Tchuvashov, 2001 can be distinguished by their different spiral angles.

Opis:
The paper presents three examples of interpretations of geological events and paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental conditions made on the basis of studies of karst forms in Devonian carbonate rocks of the Świętokrzyskie (Holy Cross) Mountains, central Poland. The first study concerns paleokarst forms in two sites: Wietrznia and Jaworznia which record the Late Permian relief evolution and its tectonic rejuvenation at the beginning of the Triassic period. The next two interpretations concern the Cenozoic karst forms. Analysis of spatial development of subsurface karst systems made possible to determine of erosional base stabilization levels during the Neogene. The highest karst horizon (Łagów) was most probably related to the level of one of the transgressions in the Fore-Carpathian marine basin. In turn, the study of sand sediments filling karst forms, particularly analysis of roundness and shape of sand grains enables to distinguish five types of sand grains of different genesis, among which are grains originated from various local weathered rocks as well as pyrogenic particles. On the basis of this analysis the extent of Lower Triassic cover was determined and karst development during the Quaternary period was assessed, as well as some suggestions on the Neogene paleoenvironment were formulated.

Opis:
Detailed studies on Carboniferous species of the xenacanth Orthacanthus have shown that the xenacanth dorsal fin spine can be used for skeletochronological analyses and provides valuable information about development, growth and environmental life conditions of those extinct sharks. We report here for the first time the histology and skeletochronology of Permian specimens, dorsal spines of Orthacanthus platypternus from the Craddock Bone Bed (lower Clear Fork Formation; Early Permian, Leonardian age) of northern Baylor County (north-central Texas, USA). Twelve dorsal spines of O. platypternus preserve a highly vascularized wall mainly composed of centrifugally growing dentine in a succession of dentine layers, probably deposited with an annual periodicity. As expected, spines of individuals with 1–2 dentine layers, presumably juveniles, present the smallest sizes. However, spines of individuals showing at least 3–4 dentine layers and interpreted to be subadults/young adults, are distributed in two spine-size clusters corresponding to females (probably the largest spines) and males, in agreement with the hypothesis of sexual size dimorphism proposed in a previous biometric analysis. Our comparative study of O. platypternus and the Stephanian species O. meridionalis further suggests that spine denticulation can be useful for distinguishing between species of Orthacanthus and sexually dimorphic forms (juvenile to adults) in each species. Total body length estimations of O. platypternus from the Craddock Bone Bed point to relatively large juveniles and small subadults/young adults (less than 2 m in total length), living as opportunistic predators in the pond-channel coastal plain environments represented by the bone bed deposits. The comparative analyses of the ontogenetic stages of the recorded specimens of O. platypternus and their distribution along different facies and localities indicate that this species was euryhaline, diadromous with a catadromous life-cycle which was strongly regulated by the semi-arid, seasonally dry tropical climate affecting western Pangaea during the Early Permian.

Opis:
Rock salts of the Late Permian (Zechstein) evaporite cycles in Poland were studied for construction of the representative bromine curves. Such standard bromine profiles could enable identification of individual salt units within the highly tectonized and deformed salt structures such as diapirs, where the normal successions of evaporite lithological components are uncommon. Structural-textural, geochemical and petrological studies (Tab. 1-2, 5-10) were realized on the deep-water facies of salt deposits, defined in the cores from selected wells located on the Poland Permian Basin (PPB) margins (Oldest Halite [Na1] unit of PZ1 cycle - Figs 1-5) and in sections from mine galleries of the Kłodawa salt mine (a salt diapir with rock salt units of PZ2, PZ3 and PZ4 cycles located in the axial part of PPB - Figs 7-9, 11-13,15-18). Standard bromine profile for the rock salt succession of PZ1 cycle (Na1 unit; Tab. 1-2, 5-6; Fig. 6) characterizes with: (a) gradual increase of Br content in the lower part of section, (b) almost constant content values in its middle part (with a subtle decrease tendency upward) and (c) rapid fluctuations of Br content in the top part of section (rapid decrease, following increase and fall). Vertical bromine content distribution in the standard bromine profile for the rock salt succession of PZ2 cycle (Na2 unit, Tab. 7; Fig. 10) evidences: (a) gradual Br content increase along a thick interval of lower part of the section, registering evaporation progress; (b) rapid increase of Br values in the middle section part, indicating a period of isolation and (c) fine fluctuations of generally high Br content in the upper part of succession. [...] Vertical bromine content distribution for the rock salt succession of PZ4 cycle (Na4 unit, Tab. 8; Fig. 16) characterizes with: (a) rapid Br content increase within the Underlying Halite (Na4a0) unit, (b) almost constant Br content in the Lower Youngest Halite (Na4a1) unit, (c) fall and following increase of Br values in the Clay Youngest Halite (Na4at) unit and significant Br content fluctuations within the Upper Youngest Halite (Na4a2) unit. The extended in the axial part of PPB two zuber (mixed clay-salt rocks) units (Tab. 9; Fig. 15, 17-18): the Brownish Zuber (Na3t) and the Red Zuber (Na4t) differ with distinctly various Br content intervals being the higher for the Brownish Zuber rocks (Tab. 9; Fig. 18). Concluding, although sometimes comparable values intervals of Br content in studied Zechstein salt deposits (Tab. 10), the curves of Br distribution for individual salt lithostratigraphic units are different and may be considered as a characteristic feature of each unit. So this parameter (Br content distribution) could be used to identify the lithostratigraphic units especially in the highly tectonized successions build of almost structurally homogeneous rock salt deposits e.g. in salt diapirs.

Polish Permian Basin

Opis:
The Polish Permian Basin (PPB) is a part of the Southern Permian Basin in theWestern and the Central Europe. Results of burial and thermal analyses as well as a configuration of the Moho surface of the Polish Basin suggest the asymmetrical basin model. History of the Polish Basin reveals that the Late Permian and the Early Triassic periods represent the main rifting phase and its later development resulted from thermal relaxation. During the Late Triassic and the Jurassic time some cooling of rift heat field took place, but the turning point in thermal evolution of the Polish Basin was at the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary when the south-western part of the Polish Basin was uplifted and intensively eroded. The knowledge on the Permian Basin in Poland is chiefly connected with petroleum exploration. The gas fields are located mainly in the Rotliegend reservoirs. The Zechstein deposits, overlying the Rotliegend, are also in the area of economic interest: hydrocarbons occurring in carbonate deposits of the Werra (Zechstein Limestone - Ca1 ) and Stassfurt (Main Dolomite - Ca2) cyclothems. Several tens gas fields have been hitherto discovered within the Rotliegend sandstones and the Zechstein limestones. Reservoirs are the clastic, terrestrial deposits of the Lower Permian and calcareous, biogenic carbonates of the Zechstein. Evaporates, mainly salts of the Werra cyclothem, are the regional sealing for the mentioned reservoirs. Natural gas accumulated in the Rotliegend sandstones and the Zechstein limestones is of the same origin: it was generated from organic matter occurred in the Carboniferous rocks and it migrated to higher places where it became concentrated within favourable structural or lithofacies conditions. High nitrogen content in the natural gas from the Polish Permian Basin is explained that nitrogen is generated from an organic matter within a sedimentary basin at higher temperatures than methane. Location of high helium concentration corresponds to the area of highest heat flow during the Late Permian, Triassic and Jurassic times, evidencing the Late Permian-Early Mesozoic rifting process. Numerous oil gas fields discovered in the Main Dolomite (Ca2) unit constitute it as one of the most important exploration target in the Polish Basin. It composes the closed hydrodynamic system sealed from the top and the bottom by evaporates. Both the source rocks and reservoirs are characteristic for this unit. Influence of the burial and thermal history of the Polish Basin on a petroleum play generation within the Main Dolomite unit is clearly visible. The previous and the present petroleum discoveries in the Polish Permian Basin, comparing to the other petroleum provinces in Poland, indicate it as a main exploration target.

Opis:
A newly discovered trilobite fauna from the early to middle Permian Qarari Unit of northeastern Sultanate of Oman is described. It comprises exceptionally complete and well-preserved examples of five proetoid species, belonging to genera typical of an eastern Tethyan region extending through southern Asia to Timor. The shallow shelf fauna compares closely with one of Artinskian age from Afghanistan. Permian species previously assigned to Paladin are here considered unrelated to this predominantly Carboniferous clade, and are placed in a new ditomopygine genus, Simulopaladin, type species Simulopaladin tridentifer sp. nov. Three other ditomopygine species are described: Hentigia ornata sp. nov., Iranaspidion elephas sp. nov., and Acanthophillipsia felicitae sp. nov. The proetid Triproetus bonbon sp. nov. is the most complete material known of a more widespread genus.

Opis:
Wypełniają je paleofluidy o zróżnicowanym składzie i różnej gęstości. Temperatura homogenizacji, która stanowi przybliżenie temperatury zamknięcia fluidu w minerale, wykazuje zmienność związaną z rodzajem spoiwa i z historią geologiczną badanego obszaru.
Characteristics and results of microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions which occur in the cements of sedimentary rocks of the age oscillating form Cambrian to Permian and from Jurassic to Paleogene and Miocene are presented. The inclusions studied are primary and secondary in origin. They display one, two or, less frequently, three phases. The inclusions are filled by the paleofluids of variable compositions and densities. The homogenization temperature, which corresponds to the minimum estimation of the trapping temperature, shows variability in respect to the cement type and geological history of the study area. Salinities of fluids are also variable in respect to the cement type and locality. Wider interpretation of the microthermometric analyses is enabled when they are combined, e.g., with the isotopic studies.

Opis:
The paper presents results of detailed research of pore space in the Upper Carboniferous and Lower Permian sandstones and those from the Upper Carboniferous/Lower Permian transitional section. This is followed by a preliminary assessment of reservoir properties against the background of diagenetic processes. The samples were collected from 11 boreholes. The research included standard petrological investigations supported by a digital image analysis of thin sections. Compaction and cementation were the main processes reducing porosity in all the sandstones. Cementation locally reduced primary porosity to approximately 80%. Compaction was much less active. The sandstones are characterized by primary and secondary porosity. Secondary intergranular as well as intercrystalline and intracrystalline porosity developed as a result of diagenetic dissolution of feldspar grains and cements. Variability of petrophysical parameters can be a result, among others, of lithological and facies development. Upper Carboniferous and Upper Carboniferous/Lower Permian sandstones show the best reservoir properties. Lower Permian sandstones are characterized by variable properties.
