Opis:
Contemporary Christianity has many faces, which mostly stand for different worship styles and available services. The present study focuses on the Polish and Italian religious entrepreneurs who operate as brands, and their modus operandi is based on the power evangelism approach introduced by John Wimber in the 1980s. The branding in question has been patterned on the corporate culture and driven by continuous allusions to the figure of Jesus Christ. The main objective of this study is to explore how power evangelism-oriented entrepreneurs cultivate consumer attachment to the brands they represent. The research also aims to identify the best-selling products and services and to investigate how particular suppliers compete for adherents. The investigation has been carried out using participant observation and the analysis of the audio-visual materials. An in-depth examination of the abovementioned phenomenon shows that the current religious marketplace has been filled with a great variety of tailored religious products made by skilled religious suppliers and offered on a regular basis to ever more challenging religious customers, mainly to attract them for longer and finally, to make them convert into declared brand loyalists.

Opis:
Last decade brought further increase in popularity and outreach of Pentecostal pastors-evangelists and the expansion of new mega-churches in Sub-Saharan Africa. Media savvy and marketing-skilled charismatic “holy men” perform multiple functions, including that of political actors, increasingly influential, and indispensable in the election cycles of multiple African states, most notably Anglophone ones. Recognising the pivotal role of Pentecostal constituencies, political players, such as candidates in presidential elections seek mega-church leaders’ blessings or a favourable political prophecy. State officials reciprocate with adopting policies which resonate with their message. This mutual relationship and mainstreaming of Pentecostal discourse affects the overall political culture of young, African democracies. As the new brand of Pentecostalism grows on economic deprivation and disillusionment with the state, it also begins to foster, not just metaphorically, an alternative order and set of values. This comes with religiously driven perceptions of pastors’ powers, which makes them seem potentially more effective and legitimate than secular, democratic leaders, and state institutions. Thanks to those credentials, as well as their widely developed networks, influential pastors begin to make inroads into African foreign policymaking. The process of officialising Pentecostal actors as quasi-diplomats as well as absorbing their ideas and modus operandi into the foreign policy arena seem to contradict advancement of professionalism and transparency in diplomacy as functions of state capabilities. However, in some contexts, growth of their powers and outreach may work in favour of increasing African agency.

Opis:
This article asks whether the Hebrew Bible concepts of war and violence, especially the concept of herem, could be applied to the study of gang-related violence in Brazil. Specifi[1]cally, this article looks at two cultural phenomena evidencing a great degree of porosity between the Evangelical church and organized crime in Brazilian favelas, namely, the “Evangelical traf[1]ficker” (Cunha, 2015) and “Evangelical exemption” (Brenneman, 2011). This porosity has been described before, but the causes have been given in mostly sociological terms without enough attention paid to the exegesis of biblical stories, which are likely to be known in Evangelical cir[1]cles and hence likely to influence traffickers who move in these circles. This article discusses the cultural context of both phenomena and then asks, first, how the Hebrew Bible concepts of war and violence could be mediated into the favela circles, and second, whether the concepts could serve as ordering lenses of analysis for gang-related violence in Brazil. Extant terrorist and story research, as well as relevant Brazilian research on drug-related violence, are sourced throughout the article to support the proposal. Ultimately, however, the article proposes to test and finetune this connection via a focused field study. Thus, the posited connection gains practical implica[1]tions and can be adapted to other research settings where a similar blending of research and violence is observed.

This article is a study on life trajectories and changes of the self of one single person, following the transformation processes that occurred in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas during the last two decades and focusing on the relationship between Evangelicals and drug traffickers. Based on an ethnography of almost two years in Cidade de Deus favela, the trajectory of a single individual, a former drug dealer and a crack addict who switched between the church and the traffic throughout the fieldwork process, is presented in what can be called sociology of intimate troubles or sociology of self-inquiry, that is, a methodology that aims to capture the actors through their problems.

The rise of the Second Apostolic Age brought about the emergence of numerous opportunities which enable the miracle-oriented individuals to connect to the spirit realm. The so-called power portals are believed to be highly influential, especially within the neo-Charismatic communities. The disciples of Peter C. Wagner, an American missionary who restored the apostolic model of leadership, appear to perceive graves as the wondrous channels between a human being and the supernatural. For the last few years, the students of Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry (BSSM) from Redding in California have been practicing necromancy in the form of magical contagion, also known as grave soaking, grave sucking or mantle grabbing, which consists in soaking up the spiritual power of the deceased. The principal objective is to analyze whether the above-mentioned ritual, performed by the convinced Christians, is somehow related to magical behavior. Moreover, this particular research focuses on the proper understanding of how the law of contagion has been implemented into the activities undertaken by Bethel’s students. The first part of the article emphasizes the main characteristics of the New Apostolic Reformation. The second part concentrates on the concepts such as the divine anointing and impartation, whereas the third one applies to a specific case of necromancy.

From the 1990s on, the New Age ceased to be visible only among the exclusivist groups of salvific character, typical of the 1970s. Its values began to be disseminated among the broader culture through what was called the New Age ethos. This article seeks to show how these values are seen even among Brazilian Pentecostal Denominations. To this end, we adopt life coaching as an object. We briefly return to the history of life coaching and its relation to the New Age. We then explain how the spread of the New Age ethos into the broader society led to the incorporation of some of the New Age values and practices into even institutionalized forms of religion. Finally, we discuss how life coaching became incorporated into the plethora of religious goods also offered by Brazilian Charismatic Christians, and how Evangelical coaching maintains much of the religious logic of the New Age itself.

The Pentecostal movement is presently the fastest growing current in Christianity. We are dealing with a high degree of diversity. Dynamic development is accompanied by questions about the preservation of the traditional vision of ecclesiology and soteriology. The Pentecostal movement grew out of Protestantism, especially its evangelical wing. It contains a traditional for this environment soteriological doctrine, partly also ecclesiological. Many theses about doctrine of church are still being defined. The Final Reports of the dialogue conducted by the Vatican Secretariat for Christian Unity with certain Pentecostal Churches, leaders and theological circles are a great help in this regard. The article is an attempt to answer the question about the reception of the formula of St. Cyprian: extra ecclesiam nulla salus in the classic Pentecostal movement.

Healing ministries, typical of Christian charismatics in many different denominations, gained popularity over the past 50 years with the expansion of Neo-Pentecostalism in Protestant communities as well as the Charismatic Renewal among the Catholic Church. According to Christian as well as Hindu preachers, healing of the body, mind, and soul seems to be indispensable for one’s spiritual growth. In order for the follower to be healed, a supernatural force needs to be employed. Christians associate this particular entity with the Holy Spirit, whereas the followers of Hinduism – with Kundalini Shakti. What appears to be interesting is the fact that although these two religions differ to a great extent, the symptoms of the spiritual awakening are similar. The aim of this study is to analyze the actions ascribed to the Holy Spirit during the so- called healing ministries and compare them with the manifestations of Kundalini Shakti that can be observed during the Hindu ceremony known as Shaktipat.

Gender construction in Nigeria is culturally constructed, gender processes are inculcated through the family, school, religion, peer group etc, as such women are relegated on their line of actions culturally. Thus, gender inequality has gained momentum. However, in the Pentecostal doctrines and dogma women position have change drastically giving credence to equal partnership with the men. Hence, this research aims at showing that Pentecostalism adapting itself as a Christian denomination that saturate itself as a possible gospel, involved in the rejuvenation of humanity have tendencies towards the appreciation and equivalent status women enjoys with the men counterpart, dominantly recognizing the important role women can play in the church and the society, as such priding the feminine role as a necessary complement to the masculine role. As such, women are allowed to own their parishes, women ministry, women pastorate, women counselors, women wing, and side by side leadership role with men etc. This serves as advocacy mechanism by Pentecostal ministry to reconstruct the cultural/traditional construct of gender in Nigeria.

This article discusses the religious conflict between Afro-Brazilian and Pentecostal groups shedding light on the complex relations between cross-religious experiences and the official acknowledgement of ‘religion’ in Brazil. The study analyses devotees and clients’ experiences in the rituals of Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus and Umbanda addressing fluid selfhoods and the multiple human and other-than-human agencies in the making of individual life trajectories through ritual participation. Thus, regarding religious conflict merely through bounded identities, institutions or dogma, the study shows that behind the fortifying religious conflict between Pentecostal and Afro-Brazilian religious groups relies a politically complex, colonially framed concept of ‘religion’ which leaves out of academic and political consideration a large part of effective ritual knowledge and agency, continuously re-producing the inferior position of ‘Afro-Brazilian religions’ within the Brazilian society. The analysis in this article is based on ethnographic field research carried out in Southeast Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo during 2008-2015.

The main objective of the study is to identify, in a broad sense, the changes taking place in the religious sphere in the Latin American region, with particular emphasis on the legal aspects of this phenomenon. The different parts cover separate problem areas which will need to be addressed by the legislators in the near future. This problem is a major research thesis. Interdisciplinarity is justified by the subject of the research undertaken. It remains at the junction of law, political science, sociology and history, as well as the religious studies. The legal and religious relations are presented on the basis of a comparative legal method and a historical-legal method. Despite the clear decrease in the number of people identifying themselves with the Catholic Church, they still constitute the majority in the region. Two tendencies can be noticed: Catholics change religious affiliation, leaving the church in favor of Protestant communities, especially by neo-Pentecostal groups; the number of people who do not identify with any institutional form of religious association increases. The phenomenon of religiosity has changed significantly compared to the last century. More and more people choose beliefs and evaluate them according to subjective criteria. They choose values in spiritual life, without the need to participate in an institutionalized religious organization.

W wymiarze globalnym zaczyna dominować bardziej konserwatywna i charyzmatyczna wersja chrześcijaństwa Południa; 4.
The aim of the article is to draw attention to three issues: the transformation of Christianity in Europe, the process of its pentecostalization and the issue of religious experience. It consists of three parts, respectively, in which the following theses were posed: 1. Christianity in Europe is in retreat, but it experiences revival in other parts of the world; 2. The secularization paradigm has been weakened and there is a growing interest in various forms of religion; 3. In the global dimension a more conservative and charismatic version of the Christianity of the South begins to dominate; 4. The process of pentecostalization is an expression of the changes taking place in Christianity; 5. Pentecostalization, despite some shortcomings, has great potential and can contribute to the renewal of faith, deepening the sacramental practice and social commitment; 6. One should reject the conviction of many Pentecostal Christians for the possibility of a direct experience of God; 7. The experience of the sacred, being the core of religious life, is always mediated by an interpreted medium (human conditions, signs, events and activities).

In the context of groups of new evangelization, various charismatic groups and their leaders – differently influencing the faithful in various ways – the aim of the article is to identify the source and to show charismatic phenomena over the centuries. The subject of historical and theological reflection are issues related to the issue that interests us from biblical times to the nineteenth century, when there was a very strong expansion of move-ments that define themselves as charismatic and under the “action” of the Holy Spirit. The vast ma-jority of behaviors observed during extreme charismatic meetings is evident in occult religions. Im-petuous and abnormal experiences have become the hallmark of groups and their leaders who con-vince their followers of the supposed action of the Holy Spirit by them and their unique mission to take to renew the faith of the Church. In the modern era, there appeared diverse charismatic sects in the Protestant and Anglican spirit, characterized by specific religious phenomena: visions, healings, prophecies, speaking in tongues, healing, trembling, baptism in the Holy Spirit, falling asleep in the Spirit.
