Nowadays, there are growing demands on the accuracy of production. Most of this is reflected in precise manufacturing, such as the investment casting process. Foundries are looking for causes of defects in some cases for a very long time, and it may happen that the source of defects is completely different from what was originally assumed. During the casting process there exist potential causes of defects as oxygen inclusions. This paper represents a summary of the beginnings of a wider research that will address the problems of gating systems in investment casting technology. In general, the influence of the melt flow is underestimated and the aim of the whole scientific research is to demonstrate the significant influence of laminar or turbulent flow on the resulting casting quality. Specifically, the paper deals with the analysis of the most frequent types of defects found in castings made of expensive types of materials casted in an open atmosphere and demonstration of connection with the design of gating systems in the future.

The remelting, refining, and casting process of aluminum alloys often generate aluminum dross containing primarily oxides and nitrides of aluminum and entrapped metallic aluminum at the surface of the molten metal as a result of reactions within the furnace atmosphere at elevated temperatures. The handling of dross is an expensive but necessary activity during aluminum smelting. Furthermore, the amorphous Al2O3 oxide film formed on the pure molten aluminum surface due to the liquid metal randomly distributed atoms is impermeable to the diffusion of aluminum metal and oxygen. In amorphous materials, there is a low mobility of the charge carriers and an absence of preferred diffusion paths. This film can transform to crystalline Al2O3 by nucleation and grows with time and opportunity. This review discusses the mechanism of oxide formation and the aluminum metal recovery processes.

Opis:
Pouring of liquid aluminium is typically accompanied by disturbance of the free surface. During these disturbances, the free surface oxide films can be entrained in the bulk of liquid, also pockets of air can be accidentally trapped in this oxide films. The resultant scattering of porosity in castings seems nearly always to originate from the pockets of entrained air in oxide films. Latest version of ProCast software allows to identify the amount of oxides formed at the free surface and where they are most likely to end-up in casts. During a filling calculation, ProCast can calculate different indicators which allow to better quantify the filling pattern. The fluid front tracking indicator “ Free surface time exposure” has the units [cm2s]. At each point of the free surface, the free surface area is multiplied by the time. This value is cumulated with the value of the previous timestep. In addition, this value is transported with the free surface and with the fluid flow. Experiments to validate this new functions were executed.

Currently, due to the economic and ecological aspects, light alloys are increasingly important construction material, in particular in the transport industry. One of the popular foundry magnesium alloys is the alloy AZ91, which among others due to mechanical properties and technological features, is used, for example, for light structural parts. The paper presents the results of research on modification of the AZ91 alloy surface layer in the plasma electrolytic oxidation process. The change of usable properties of the produced coatings was obtained by introducing additions of silicon carbide or boron nitride. The thickness and hardness of the protective layers produced, resistance to scratches and corrosion resistance were determined. Moreover, the friction coefficient of the coating-steel pair was investigated. The quality of the connections made between the coating and the substrate, i.e. the magnesium alloy, was also evaluated. The results obtained for coatings with silicon carbide or boron nitride additives were always compared to the results obtained for unmodified samples. On the basis of the obtained results, it was shown that the introduction of boron nitride additive to the AZ91 alloy coating produced in the plasma electrolytic oxidation process significantly improves the resistance to: (i) corrosion and (ii) abrasive wear of the coating.

In this paper, formation of a nanostructure semi transparence fluoride tin oxides (FTO) by spray pyrolysis technique on porous silicon PS layer. Porous silicon PS layer was prepared by anodization of p-type silicon wafers to fabricate of the UV- Visible Fluoride-doped tin oxide /Porous silicon /p-Si heterojunction photodetector. Optical properties of FTO thin films were measured. The optical band gap of 3.77 eV for SnO2 : F for film was deduced. From (I-V) and (C-V) measurements, the barrier ØB height for FTO/PS diode was of 0.77, and the built in voltage Vbi, which was of 0.95 V. External quantum efficiency was 55 % at 500 nm which corresponding to peak responsivity of 1.15 A/W at 1 V bias. The PS band gap in the vicinity of PS/c-Si heterojunction was 1.38 eV.

Opis:
Innovative procedure of microalloying continuous cast aluminum strip, thickness 10 mm, by Be, Zr and Mn using 3C Pechiney technology (no. 39762, P-377/76), and modifying the existing parameters for strip casting and crystallization was implemented under industrial conditions with two randomly selected batches 2×8 tones, without previous selection of standardized quality of aluminum, purity Al 99.5%, obtained by electrolysis. The application of microalloying and overall structural modification of the technology resulted in obtaining nanoscale, ultra-thin, compact oxide high-gloss film with uniform surface of continuous cast strip, instead of the usual thick and porous oxide film. The outcome of microalloying the obtained equiaxed fine-grained nano/micro structure was avoiding anisotropic and dendritic microstructure of the strip, and improving deformation and plastic properties of modified continuous cast strip subjected to the technology of plastic treatment by rolling until the desired foil thickness of 9 μm was obtained. The invention of microalloying and structural modification, including multiplying effect of several components, directly or indirectly, changed numerous structurally-sensitive properties. The obtained nano/micro structure of crystal grains with equiaxed structure resulted in the synergy of undesirable <111> and inevitable <100> and <110> textures. Numerous properties were significantly enhanced: elastic modulus was improved, and intensive presence of cracks in warm forming condition was prevented due to rapid increase of the number of grains to 10000 grains/cm2 in as-cast state.

During the casting of aluminium alloys, the susceptibility to form oxide films is high, due to the turbulent flow of the melt and constant exposure of new surface area. This have impact on the properties of the material and the service life of the casting components. Also, hydrogen solubility in the solid state are very low, which ends up being rejected and causing porosity. After pouring, when solidification occurs, another phenomenon arise called shrinkage. This require excess molten metal to be fed during this phase change to eliminate or reduce the effect of volumetric changes. Filling and feeding during aluminium casting is therefore of paramount importance, and careful steps needs to be undertaken to reduce possible defects in the castings. The objective is to apply studied literature guides and rules and simulate the casting process of aluminium alloys, and understand the how certain defects are occurring during this process. This is a preliminary study towards the understanding of the “macro evolution” of Al-Si-Cu alloy during solidification, which will be the bases for the study of microsegregation of the specified alloy.

This paper presents some results of investigations on aluminum oxide Al2O3 thin films prepared by the atomic layer deposition method on polished monocrystalline silicon. It has been described how the technological parameters of the deposition process, like the number of cycles and substrate temperature, influenced the optical properties and morphology of prepared thin films. Their physical and optical properties like thickness, uniformity and refractive index have been investigated with spectroscopic ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy and UV/vis optical spectroscopy.

Opis:
The optical and structure properties of Cadmium oxide (CdO) thin film prepared by electrochemical deposition method at different times (15, 30 and 60) min were investigated in this paper. Results of optical Transmission, absorption, reflection spectra, optical conductance, refractive index, extension coefficient, real and imaginary dielectric constants studies are reported. The optical transmittance of the CdO thin film which formed at room temperature was 20% at wavelength ≈350 nm then increases to 60% at wavelength ≈1100 nm for thin film of CdO. The band-gap was also calculated from the equation relating absorption coefficient with the wavelength. The energy band gap changes from 2.3eV (Bulk CdO) to 2.45eV (CdO thin film). The plotted graphs show the optical characteristics of the film which varied with the wavelength and the photon energy. The optical conductance and band-gap indicated that the film is transmitting within the visible range. The dielectric constant and optical conductance of the film initially decreases slowly with increase in photon energy. The extinction coefficient and refractive index of the films also evaluated, which affected with the change in transmittance. The structure of synthesised CdO thin film was analyzed by X-ray diffraction XRD which revealed that the CdO thin film are polycrystalline and have several peaks of cubic face structure. The crystallite size, dislocation density, microstrain and number of dislocations of the thin film were calculated and listed.

Opis:
Thin films of zinc oxide doped with aluminium were obtained by using the magnetron sputtering technique on glass substrates. The changes in magnetron power influence the structural, optical and electrical properties of the ZnO:Al layers. The deposited films are characterized by very good homogeneity and high optical transmission. Thicker films with larger agglomerates on the surface exhibit lower resistivity with the remaining good transparency.

Among the various thin film coating techniques, atomic layer deposition (ALD) has features of good controllability of the thickness, excellent step-coverage in 3-dimensional object even in the sub-nm thickness range at the relatively low deposition temperature. In this study, SnO2 thin films were grown by ALD in the variation of substrate temperatures from 150 to 250°C. Even such a low temperature may influence on the growth kinetics of the ALD reaction and thus the physical characteristics of thin films, such as crystallinity, film density and optical band gap, etc. We observed the decrease of the growth rate with increasing substrate temperature, at the same time, the density of the film was decreased with increasing temperature. Steric hindrance effect of the precursor molecule was attributed to the inverse relationship of the growth temperature and growth rate as well as the film density. Optical indirect band gap energy (~3.6 eV) of the ALD-grown amorphous SnO2 films grown at 150°C was similar with that of the literature value, while slightly lower band gap energy (~3.4 eV) was acquired at the films grown at higher temperature.

This paper presents a method to design a surface microstructure of vanadium oxide to enhance optical absorption. This method, using a density of eigenfrequency, can be calculated by a planar wave expand method, to indicate the absorption efficiency of a dispersion material, which can be used as an approach method for further design. Based on this, a nanostructure-based vanadium oxide film is designed and simulated to validate this method. The simulation results show that the tendency of density of eigenfrequency is corresponding to the tendency of optical absorption enhancement. Moreover, this structure can achieve high optical broadband absorption when the material dispersion is considered. High optical absorption enhancement can be achieved by adjusting the geometrical parameters; our maximum overall enhancement absorption ratio was 31.84% at the metal phase, which can be attributed to the enhancement effect of a photonic band edge.

This work presents a high-sensitivity refractive index and salinity sensor by using fiber-optic side-polishing and electron-beam evaporation techniques. Thin film coated on the flat surface of side-polished fibers can generate a lossy mode resonance (LMR) effect. A gallium-doped zinc oxide (GZO) thin film was prepared by an electron-beam evaporation with the ion assisted deposition method. The residual thickness of the side-polished fiber was 76.5 μm, and GZO film thickness of 69 nm was deposited on the flat surface of the side-polished fiber to fabricate LMR-based fiber sensors. The variation in the optical spectrum of LMR-based fiber sensors was measured by different refractive index saline solutions. The LMR wavelength shift is caused by the refractive index change, which is nearly proportional to the salinity. The corresponding sensitivity of the proposed fiber-optic sensor was 3059 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) for the refractive index range of 1.333 to 1.398. To evaluate the sensitivity of LMR salinity sensors, the saline solution salinities of 3.6%, 7.3%, 10.9%, 14.6%, 18.2% and 21.9% were measured in this work. The experimental result shows that the sensitivity of the proposed salinity sensor is 9.94 nm/%.

Homocentrically grown SnO2 nanorods were synthesized by a hydrothermal method, whose diameter and length are around 20 nm and 100-200 nm, respectively. The photovoltaic properties of dye-sensitized SnO and MgO-treated SnO2 films were investigated. A light-to-electricity conversion yield of 0.8% was achieved by applying the nanorods as a thin film layer for the dye-sensitized solar cells. Treatment with MgO on SnO2 surface improves the photovoltage, fill factor and cell efficiency owing to preventing a recombination of the electrons injected into SnO with acceptors in the electrolyte.

The work highlights peculiar features of synthesis and summarizes important properties of nanoparticles and films based on two types of oxide magnets: with spinel and perovskite-type structures. The attention is drawn to the differences in the processes underlying the formation of crystalline phase in the materials of each group. It is shown that for the spinels, the formation of weakly agglomerated crystalline nanoparticles can occur in the process of synthesis, but for the perovskite-like magnets, the formation of crystalline nanoparticles requires additional high-temperature treatment. It is demonstrated that synthesized nanoparticles and films may find wide practical applications, particularly as the heat mediators in hyperthermia treatment therapy, as components of left-handed media, ferroelectric-ferromagnetic layered structures and composite microwave resonators. They also may be used as integral parts of composite structures, which possess magnetic-field-controlled properties and display giant magnetocaloric effect.
