Opis:
The article is devoted to oral attainment in a foreign language. It revises the term speaking, and explains its difficult role, yet fundamental both in teaching and in learning. Although oral communication is not easy to success in, it is, inevitably, one of the main determinants of students’ achievements in a classroom situation. The article presents what happens during a typical classroom interaction situation, emphasizing the cooperation between the speaker and the listener, quoting Grice’s (1975) four maxims governing the cooperation in communication, namely, the maxim of quantity, quality, relation and manner. Then, various features, factors and functions related to speaking are enumerated, underlining the difficult role of speaking in the whole process of foreign language learning. According to Common European Framework (Council of Europe 2001), all the features of spoken language, also mediating and interaction, are important in designing speaking tasks/tests, setting the assessment criteria, establishing and organizing principles and curricula for the teaching programs. The last section of the article is devoted to assessing oral skills, hence different approaches and scales are presented as examples, together with a brief explanation of the constructs of reliability and validity is speaking assessment. Special reliability and validity procedures have to be employed by test designers in order to obtain objectivity of the scores.

The concept of competence is one of the central buzzwords in the debate about the employability of university graduates as postulated in education policy. The question of competence-oriented teaching and learning goes hand in hand with the question of the practical relevance of the university and its current role. In ongoing discussions, the latter is being, if not redefined, then at least expanded so that it can no longer be reduced to the acquisition and transfer of knowledge. At the same time, the university of today faces the challenge of imparting numerous (key) competences to prospective graduates, which are certainly in demand by potential employers. One of these is communicative competence in spoken language, which is the focus of this article, using the example of German as a foreign language in a corporate context.

Opis:
This paper addresses the problem of verbal interaction and language mediation in specialized language instruction in relation to a system design of the so-called ‘talking chatbots’. The first part includes terminological clarification. The analysis is limited to the most relevant terms: chatbot, oral interaction and oral language mediation. The second part shows the extent of which the two areas appear: interdisciplinary language teaching and vocational language learning, overlapping with each other, and the role played by the linguistic ability to act. The subsequent parts focus on oral interaction and language interpretation, and their modeling through digital dialogue systems, followed by a conclusion and a brief outlook on didactic implications. The basis for the considerations are, inter alia, Searle’s theory of speech acts and Siemens’ connectivism.

Opis:
In this article, we discuss strategies for interaction in spoken discourse, focusing on ellipsis phenomena in English. The data comes from the VOICE corpus of English as a Lingua Franca, and we analyse education data in the form of seminar and workshop discussions, working group meetings, interviews and conversations. The functions ellipsis carries in the data are Intersubjectivity, where participants develop and maintain an understanding in discourse; Continuers, which are examples of back channel support; Correction, both self- and other-initiated; Repetition; and Comments, which are similar to Continuers but do not have a back channel support function. We see that the first of these, Intersubjectivity, is by far the most popular, followed by Repetitions and Comments. These results are explained as consequences of the nature of the texts themselves, as some are discussions of presentations and so can be expected to contain many Repetitions, for example. The speech event is also an important factor, as events with asymmetrical power relations like interviews do not contain so many Continuers. Our clear conclusion is that the use of ellipsis is a strong marker of interaction in spoken discourse.

Opis:
The assessment of communicative competence (speaking and listening) of students in initial teacher training is a field of study with few research despite its importance both for the learning process itself and for the subsequent professional performance. This article presents the results of a pilot study designed to identify the changes in the students’ abilities from two groups in the initial teaching training when introducing a teaching innovation with the purpose of contributing to improve their oral communicative and linguistic competence. The evaluation instruments used are EVALOE and a rubric about the argumentative text. The results show the adequacy of these instruments as teaching innovation resources for both the improvement of the students’ oral competence and its assessment.

Opis:
In this article, we discuss ellipsis as an interactive strategy by analysing the author’s textchat corpus and the VOICE corpus of English as a Lingua Franca. It is found that there were fewer repetitions in the textchat data, and this is explained as a consequence of the textchat mode. Textchat contributions are preserved as long as the chat is active or has been saved, and therefore users can scroll through and review the discussion, compared to the more fleeting nature of oral conversation. As a result, repetition is less necessary. The frequency of other functions identified could be attributed to the topic of discourse. Discussions involve much ellipsis used to develop discourse, although some were self-presentations with repetition used to confirm details. Back-channel support and comments were often low because speakers instead used forms like yeah as supportive utterances.

In this article, we deal with listening comprehension skills as we would like to define it anew in light of an oral speech analysis perspective insisting on developing the communicative expertise. In order to do so, we rely on a methodology that implies observation and analysis of oral speech and that highlights the language dynamics and the multiple enunciative point of views structuring radio programme debates.

This article is aimed at giving a part of response when it comes to selecting resources, both relevant and easily accessible, which could serve as models in developing complex L2 oral competences. Those resources should encompass all levels (relational, semantic, and formal) required in realizing and interpreting efficiently our communicative intentions in oral language. Among suggested criteria, priority is clearly given to the mastery of interactive procedures in meaning construction, as playing a crucial role both in a speaker’s/learner’s communicative efficacy and the dynamics of his/her oral capacities’ development through the media. Moreover, to illustrate our reflection, we analyze the pedagogical and interactive potential in some excerpts from Le téléphone sonne, a radio segment available in podcast format.

In this research, we propose to analyze the phenomenon of “word repetition” which is realized in the discursive exchange in contemporary spoken French. This will involve the repetitions of grammatical words that Morel and Danon-Boileau (1998) define as “functional words” (fr. mots outils) under the spontaneous oral French. The main objective of this research is to find answers to the following questions, and thus to highlight the salient points of this discursive fact which is repetition of functional words (word tools): a) What is the enunciative status of the phenomenon of repetition in verbal interaction? b) In which situation of enunciation the speaker uses the repetition?
