    Artykuł dotyczy zapomnianego pisarza XIX w. Michała Budzyńskiego oraz jego twórczości: powieści Urbi et orbi (1859) oraz Wspomnień z mojego życia (powst. 1860, wyd. 1880). Autorka skupiła się na związkach fikcji (Urbi et orbi) z dokumentem (Wspomnienia z mojego życia) i sposobem, w jaki materia powieści funkcjonuje w pamiętnikach. I zadaje pytania o sens niezamierzonego przez autora zderzania fikcji i dokumentu. W konkluzji zauważa, że Budzyński potraktował Urbi et orbi jako swoistą przypowieść o przełomie duchowym i nawróceniu, natomiast pamiętniki są nie tylko zapisem biografii pisarza, lecz także apologią księcia Czartoryskiego.
    The article deals with Michał Budzyński’s novel Urbi et orbi (1859) and Memoirs of my life (1860). Budzyński belongs to the forgotten authors of XIX c. Polish literature. The author presents Budzyński’s biography and what can be called – leitmotiv of life: the attitude to Andrzej Towiański and Adam Mickiewicz. Budzyński presents himself as “child of XVIII’s philosophy” and keeps distance to the Catholic Church and all gnostic tendencies of his time. He leads so called “campaign of distrust” against Andrzej Towiański and Mickiewicz as Towiański’s supporter. Budzyński meets the author of Konrad Wallenrod in Rome 1848. A stay in Rome is one of the most important events in his life: once again he confronts Mickiewicz and his ideas, falls in love with a young Polish lady and finally he returns to the Church. All experiencesin Rome are described in the novel Urbi et orbi. This forgotten novel connects with the matter of Memoirs. The main character of fiction can be considered as a porte parole of Michał Budzyński. The fiction describes the turn in Budzyński’s life which leads him to return to country and conversion. This biography can be implicated in the historical context of XIX c., when the matter of national identity becomes primary towards the faith. Budzyński turns this dependence: first spiritual community designates community of nation. Being a patriot means to belong to the community.

    Pierre Mertens’ novel Les éblouissements, published in 1987, is a fictionalised biography of a famous German poet Gottfried Benn, who made the biggest mistake of his life agreeing to support the National Socialist regime during several months. Mertens reconstructs the poet’s life trying to understand the reasons of his commitment, considered by the intellectuals of that time to be a betrayal. Mertens’ text is an illustration of the relationship between the individual and the historical past and, at the same time, an example of problemising the biographical factor in relation to Great History. Playing with the double signification of the word ‘éblouissement’, the novelist offers his own interpretation of the German poet’s double life.

    The main issue of this article is primarily the paratextual comments by Marguerite Yourcenar made about her novel Memoirs of Hadrian. Paradoxically — despite all the objections of the author against recognising the text in terms of apocrypha (defined as a strong hoax / forgery) — the remarks confirm the diagnosis of the apocryphal character of the novel in another sense. Those self-commentaries, which relate to efforts to uphold ancient realities and build the illusion behind the authenticity of the autobiography of the emperor, support the idea and such understanding of apocrypha, which fully utilizes the potential genre intertext, or biblical apocrypha. The apocryphal character of Memoirs of Hadrian and other literary quasi-autobiographical fictions are not false attributions in which the role of the author is to play real historical persons, determine mimetic convention of a narrative, re-narration and re-focalization and related to them is the supplementation of biographical or (possibly) autobiographical intertextuality.

    Pierwsze polskie zbiorowe wydanie Mausa Arta Spiegelmana w trzydziestą rocznicę oryginalnej publikacji zbiegło się w czasie ze spóźnioną polską debatą o różnicach pomiędzy komiksem a powieścią graficzną pomijającą protesty autora/rysownika przeciw klasyfikowaniu jego nagradzanej żydowsko-amerykańskiej (auto)(bio)graficznej narracji jako literatury pięknej i powieści graficznej. Skoro amerykańscy teoretycy i teoretyczki medium komiksowego zidentyfikowali tendencję do nadużywania określenia „powieść graficzna” z powodu prestiżu i względów komercyjnych, warto by również polscy krytycy i krytyczki graficznych narracji rozważyli stosowanie takich kategorii jak (auto)biograficzna powieść graficzna i graficzny pamiętnik. Graficzne pamiętniki problematyzujące wpływ rasowych, klasowych i płciowych hierarchii na proces powstawania hybrydycznych tożsamości etnicznych stanowią ważny wkład wielu uznanych amerykańskich rysowników i rysowniczek pochodzenia żydowskiego aktywnych w nurcie undergroundowego lub alternatywnego komiksu. Polskie antologie mogłyby też uwzględniać perspektywę autobiograficzną i stosowanie nowych, bardziej precyzyjnych terminów odmian gatunkowych w klasyfikacji tekstów intermedialnych.
    The first Polish edition of Art Spiegelman’s The Complete Maus coincided with the 30th anniversary of the original American publication of Maus and stimulated a delayed Polish debate about the differences between comics and a graphic novel which disregards the author’s/cartoonist’s protests against classifying his award-winning Jewish American (auto)(bio)graphical narrative as fiction and the graphic memoir. Since American theoreticians and critics of comics medium identified the tendency to overuse the term “the graphic novel” for prestige and commercial reasons, it would be useful if Polish specialists of graphic narratives also considered using such terms as the (auto)biographical graphic novel and the graphic memoir. Graphic memoirs problematizing impact of intersecting race, class and gender hierarchies on the formation of hybrid ethnic identities constitute an important contribution of many accomplished underground or alternative American male and female cartoonists of Jewish descent and it would be good if Polish anthologies reflected this trend.

W niniejszym artykule interesować mnie będzie grupa tekstów, które ujawniają szczególnego rodzaju zainteresowanie wybitnymi osobowościami polskiego teatru – Kazimierzem Dejmkiem i Jerzym Grotowskim. Wybrane utwory pierwowzór bohaterów powieściowych, a także schemat fabularny, zapożyczają z pogranicza biografii oraz wydarzeń teatralnych, a następnie transponują je w świat powieściowej fikcji. Zastosowana strategia kluczowa występuje w dwóch podstawowych wariantach – powieści pamfletu oraz powieści paraboli. Proces mitologizowania artysty teatru podporządkowany zostaje tworzeniu biografii fantazmatycznych, opartych na szczególnego rodzaju pakcie referencjalnym między nadawcą i odbiorcą tekstu.
    The contemporary Polish prose has once more become inspired by the novel concerning an artist, and attempts to mythologise the artist’s image of the world of the theater. In this article, I shall cover a range of texts which show a peculiar interest in the great figures of the Polish theatre – Kazimierz Dejmek and Jerzy Grotowski. The chosen works adopt the archetypes of both the characters, as well as of the plot, from the overlapping areas of the two artists’ personal and professional scenic lives, conveying the artists’ real-world experiences into fiction. The key strategy used in the mentioned works occurs in two basic varieties – the pamphlet novel and the parabolic novel. The mythologisation of the artist is dependent on the creation of phantasmatic biographies, based on a unique type of an unspoken agreement between the author and the reader.

    This article concerns the book Prus. Śledztwo biograficzne [Prus. A biographical investigation] by Monika Piątkowska, a new biography of the nineteenth-century writer that enjoys great readership. However, it contains many superficial interpretations and simplifying applications. Piątkowska argues that in his stories and novels, Bolesław Prus included many autobiographical elements. This interpretation key fails. The schematic depiction of the psychological layer of literary works, the lack of references to previous studies of the work and life of Prus, disregarding the intellectual dimension of his biography – these are the most significant drawbacks of this book. The author of the review shows examples of the researcher’s simplifications and lack of competence.

    The conversation concerns the broadly-understood methodological background and substantive knowledge of the co-author of the highly praised biography of Jan Potocki, François Rosset. The researcher talks about the importance and usefulness of knowledge of the French eighteen-century novel, the Enlightenment ideas and artistic trends for the work on the biography of the author of The Manuscript found in Saragossa. Rosset also talks about archive research related to the work on this biography and about how he used his knowledge of editorial meanders of the famous novel while writing. The researcher emphasizes that the authors of biographies should keep a distance from the characters of their stories and that their main goal is to try to present the life cycle of a given person as comprehensively as possible, supporting it with sources.

    The novel Wojciechowym szlakiem [On the Trail of St Adalbert] by Gertura Skotnicka stands out from other hagiographic works about this saint not only in terms of its size, but also as far as its composition and method of presenting this character are concerned. In contrast, the works by Ewa Skarżyńska and Andrzej Hartliński do not go beyond the established genre formula. Only Anna Czerwińska-Rydel uses an original idea, implementing in her story the motif of the Gniezno Doors. The content of each bas-relief scene visible on the door constitutes a separate chapter of the book. Skotnicka also refers to this motif by mentioning its artistic value in the account of a high school student and the narrator, and by using it as illustrative material for her book. The author plays with time to transfer the boy-hero into the 10th century, which allows her to slowly create a double portrait: conventional, i.e. of an idealised saint and martyr, and the other one – of an ordinary man. This way of portraying creates plenty of room for active participation of the reader, stimulating their imagination. The artistic consequence is a multi-layered narrative, the use of a story within a story, and a play with genre and stylistic conventions. The diversity of linguistic and stylistic forms seems to be motivated by the course of action, changing the setting and time, the situation in which the boy-hero takes part, and the presence of two world-views: Christian and pagan.

    Eugenia Żmijewska (1865–1923) wrote the short story Dwa spotkania [Two Meetings], from an idea which was provided to her by Eliza Orzeszkowa. The article presents the relations between the writers: 1) on the biographical level (correspondence, critical and literary articles and memoirs); 2) at the textual level (analysis of Two Meetings and Żmijewska’s novel Jutro [Tomorrow], whose protagonist is Orzeszkowa). The analysis of the first editions and reprints of Żmijewska’s works shows frequent rewriting. This makes us doubt the theory of the faithful fulfilment of Orzeszkowa’s testament as a writer. A comparison between Żmijewska’s journalism and her novels proves that through the literary creation of the character of Orzeszkowa she presented her own views.
    Eugenia Żmijewska (1865–1923) napisała opowiadanie Dwa spotkania, do którego pomysł dała jej Eliza Orzeszkowa. Artykuł przedstawia relacje obu pisarek:1) w płaszczyźnie biograficznej (korespondencja, artykuły krytycznoliterackie i wspomnieniowe); 2) w płaszczyźnie tekstowej (analiza Dwóch spotkań i powieści Żmijewskiej Jutro, której bohaterką jest Orzeszkowa). Analiza pierwodruków i przedruków utworów Żmijewskiej wykazuje częste przeredagowania. Każe to wątpić w tezę o wiernym wypełnieniu pisarskiego testamentu Orzeszkowej. Porównanie publicystyki Żmijewskiej z jej powieściami dowodzi, że przez kreację literacką postaci Orzeszkowej prezentowała własne poglądy.

    Instead of the cliché, “How can one be a Madagascan?,” I would suggest reversing the question, so, “How can one not be a Madagascan?”. But what would a Madagascan say constitutes being a Madagascan? The journey of the individual, marked by the awareness of a particular place – “La Grande Terre” for the inhabitants, the Red Island for foreigners − by his gestures and his beliefs, could take on an exemplary anthropological value, but under what conditions? Revenir (The Return), Raharimanana’s last and autobiographical novel (he was born in 1967), will provide the starting-point of our enquiry.Actually, Revenir is a fictionalized autobiography, since its hero, Hira, has a different name from that of the author. Or one could call it a “Biography for oneself,” to use the terminology of Dominique Viart, who defines such a work as an “indirect autobiography” or a “biography as a method,” the indirectness corresponding here to the story of his father’s life; his father had hidden his early years (an unhappy childhood) and got his son unwittingly to take on the role of family chronicler, or of writer for the public at large. The end of the story thus becomes a beginning − the history of the parental relationships − which is told at the end of the narrative. All in order to demonstrate the inextricable intertwining of two destinies: that of the father and that of the son. Thus the “story of the filiation” becomes an “(auto)biographical work of fiction” and vice-versa. And there is a third subject (object) of the action, the history of Madagascar, for which both the father and the son are spokesmen.Translated by Mark Waddicor

    This article uses the example of the novel Zuleikha opens her eyes by Guzel Yakhina to identify some features of the modern novel: genre syncretism, manifested in the hybridisation of genre formulas. The subject of the study is the model of a novel in which, within the framework of a single work, genre formulas and features of various traits of the novel are merged and transformed. The novel’s genre syncretism manifests itself in the use of multi-level conflict, which contributes to the expansion of the boundaries of the narrative.
    Synkretyzm gatunkowy powieści współczesnej (na podstawie powieści Zulejka otwiera oczy Guzel Jachiny) W artykule na przykładzie powieści Zulejka otwiera oczy Guzel Jachiny ujawniane są cechy współczesnej powieści, a szczególnie synkretyzm gatunkowy, przejawiający się w hybrydyzacji formuł gatunkowych. Przedmiotem badań jest model powieściowy, w którym w ramach jednego utworu nastąpiło połączenie i przekształcenie formuł gatunkowych oraz różnych cech nowatorskich. W tekście przeanalizowane zostały kolejno przejawy synkretyzmu gatunkowego w powieści Jachiny: wykorzystanie wyznaczników powieściowych realizmu socjalistycznego i realizmu magicznego oraz intermedialność. Według autorki artykułu zastosowane zabiegi pozwalają na ukazanie wielopoziomowego konfliktu, który poszerza granice narracji.

    Opis:
    The subject of this article is the Polish-German “double biography” of Countess Joanna von Schaffgotsch as portrayed in the novel Zink wird Gold by Georg Zivier and Hans Nowak and in Gustaw Morcinek’s Pokład Joanny. The comparative analysis focuses on the dominant narrative threads and the approaches to represent this historical figure, with the portrayal of the countess as the “Silesian Cinderella” existing as a point of reference in the public consciousness. The analyses conducted in this context lead to the conclusion that Nowak/Zivier’s biography of the countess generally corresponds to historical truth and is realistic in this sense, while the ideological aspect dominates in Morcinek’s narration. The two ‘biographies’ do not take into account the regional specificity of the Countess figure.
