Opis:
The paper focuses on genealogical aspects of three interwar novels by Jalu Kurek – Andrzej Panik, Grypa szaleje w Naprawie, Woda wyżej) – which have often been described by critics as “reportage novels”. The author examines the past critical reception of the novels and the intentio auctioris. The main goal of the article is to suggest a more capacious genealogical term: the journalistic novel.

This paper presents an analysis of mythopoeic elements in three novels by Mia Couto. Starting from Mircea Eliade’s definition of myth, we look for elements of the Living Cosmos with its axis mundi, centre and periphery, chaos and harmony and quest in the novels. Such structure of the analysis allows us to consider the cultural colonization and decolonization of contemporary Mozambique. We conclude that the analysis of the mythopoetic schema in Mia Couto’s novels demonstrates a crisis of cultural harmony in the contemporary Mozambican state and nation. On the other hand, however, the mythopoetic reveals a horizon of cultural and traditional models of persistence that save not only from chaos but above all from the dehumanization of society.

The article takes up the problem of the structure of the last work of Mishima Yukio, the tetralogy Hōjō no umi (The Sea of Fertility). The book is considered to be Mishima’s opus magnum and his literary testament for the next generations. The article focuses on the Buddhist concept of transmigration which seems to be the writer’s structural trick on readers, a kind of perversive play in which the readers are not able to judge whether Mishima really believes in the concept of transmigration (jap. tenshō, sanskr. saṃsāra) or he is only mocking. Why did Mishima make this particular concept the axis of his book? The article aims at giving the answer to this question and suggests that the ultimate conclusion is yuishiki “consciousness only” (sanskr. vijñapti-mātratā).

Belief legends, especially those regarding fear and its realization, transformation and embodiment, are important narrative substrate. Forms of belief legends and/or their segments are often, in many ways and functions, intertextually inscribed in Croatian novelistic production. This paper shall analyse the way in which the motifs and topics related to the belief legends, as well as their development: defining and unmasking fear, are employed in the novels Živi i mrtvi (The Living and the Dead) by Josip Mlakić and Črna mati zemla (Black Mother Earth) by Kristian Novak. In the novel Živi i mrtvi, the elements of the belief legends poetically recreate a strong sense of horror of war, here represented through the growing fear felt by a small isolated group made up of a couple of soldiers. A different type of terror, a personal trauma that leaves the under-aged protagonist of Črna mati zemla completely isolated from the world and his loved ones, is poetically recreated especially through some of the elements of the belief legends.

This article presents two aspects of showing the power of literature. Orhan Pamuk, a Turkish Nobel prize winner, in his book New life is more focused on the content of the novel. Main characters of the story are entirely devoted to one book that totally changes their lives. Italo Calvino is more focused on the structure. His characters take part in a great adventure just to find the end of the story that they are interested in. The main goal of this article is to show differences and similarities in showing the same literary issue. Italo Calvino's novel is more optimistic and positive. Literature has good influence on his characters. On the other side, Orhan Pamuk's novel shows a destructive side of literature. Characters in his book seem to be defeated from the very beginning. Those two books show in a very good way the difference between European optimism and Oriental, especially Turkish, sentimentality, which in Turkish language has its own name – hüzün. It can be translated as 'blues, sadness, spleen'.Both novels present the power of literature and its influence on readers.

Between 1895 and 1904, Captain Edouard Deburaux, under the name Léo Dex, wrote several novels that fully embraced the codes of the geographical novel. Most of his writings, following in the footsteps of Jules Verne’s Cinq semaines en ballon (1863), were intended to take the reader mainly to Africa. So, is he a mere imitator? In fact, he differs from Verne in that he himself was a nationally and internationally recognized balloonist. And if he did not invent the “balloon novel”, he was nonetheless the most prolific contributor to the genre.

In his meta-literary and para-textual statements, Milan Kundera has been frequently turning to the issue of the enlightenment narrative experiments considered as the initial ones for the twentieth-century (post)modern creative strategies. Those experiments resulted from the striving for suppression of the over-prescription characterized the classicist rules, and they managed to direct attention to the literary genres which were undermined by the Enlightenment era that is in other words and above all, novel. In order to reveal this “modernity” of the eighteenth-century prose, the Czech writer in the work entitled Jacques and his master (1971) performed a “cultural translation” (variation) of the famous text by Diderot into the form of drama. Kundera was focused on the devices used by the French encyclopaedist which enabled him to expose the “evidence of trick” regarding the anti-illusion and fictitious character of literary representation of the world. He was, therefore, interested not so much in the philosophical and ideological background of Diderot’s tale dedicated to the romances of Jacques the Fatalist, but in the author’s freedom in his “play with the romance’s conventions” which even then was undergoing the process of fast schematisation.

W artykule podjęty zostaje temat powieści autobiograficznej i jej naukowego uzasadnienia.
The article discusses the subject of autobiographical novel and its scientific justification. In the first part the author draws the readers’ attention to the fact that certain basic problems concerning the use of the very notion stem from different ways of understanding the term “autobiographical.” The second part of the article outlines certain important approaches to autobiographical novel, predominantly in the Polish literary studies. In this area the most common are biographical methods and various forms of autobiographical treaty. Every single methodological choice entails a certain loss, since autobiographical novel offers several mutually exclusive interpretations. However, there are numerous questions which are rarely posed nowadays, and which concern receptive and medial dimension of the notion in which an autobiographical novel could exist as an “interpretation figure”. These questions are posed in the final part of the work.

Opis:
After André Gide and Marcel Proust, Louis Guilloux is one of the first writers of the 20th century who rejects the 19th-century literary tradition, creating in 1935 an exceptional and innovative novel – Le Sang Noir. Its innovation resides in the similarity to the New Novel from the 50s on the level of composition, narration, organization of spatio-temporal setting, role of the reader and character construction. The article discusses the innovative character construction employed by Guilloux in the creation of Cripure, the protagonist. By means of the techniques of internal monologue and various points of view, the author created a protagonist with highly complex personality, impossible to be unambiguously characterized. An anonymous narrator, showing dualistic approach towards the protagonist, constantly shifts the points of view, rendering any description of the protagonist’s identity unfeasible as the information provided about him by the narrator and other characters is contrary. Guilloux uses elliptic constructions, enabling the reader to interpret characters’ conduct. However, the constructions do not reveal the motivation of their actions, but are limited to presenting events, citing characters’ statements and, above all, demonstrating their behavior. The reader has to fill the gaps and interpret characters’ conduct themselves. Two decades later, this “adventure of writing” rather than “writing of adventure” will become one of the fundamental principles of the New Novel.

The paper explores the didactic potential of the novels by the eighteenth-century English writer Frances Burney. To this end, it takes up the metaphor of a life-like automaton – a symbol of human ingenuity and artistic mastery, and a popular object of entertainment in the eighteenth century – and examines its applicability to describe the act of construing a novelistic text. The analysis yields the conclusion that Burney’s experiments with narrative techniques (third-person narration, free indirect discourse, heteroglossia) were employed to ensure the narrator’s authority through the strategic withdrawal of the authorial feminine voice, and were also instrumental in achieving a text which would be both aesthetically pleasing and instructive to the readers. Burney’s didacticism, moreover, proves to be very modern, that is not prescriptively moralizing, but rather training the readers in the exercise of empathy.

The article concerns the problem of allegory in two Czech historical novels from the beginning and the end of the 60s of the twentieth century: Kladivo na čarodějnice by Václav Kaplický and Tovaryšstvo ježišovo by Jiři Šotola. Both novels are also considered to be important political ‘clearing accounts’ novels. Application of allegory as a method of reception allows us to answer the question about the participation of the reader in the setting up of allegory in the Czech prose of the twentieth century .

W drugiej części artykułu analizie poddano metafikcjonalny i pastiszowy charakter powieści Putramenta, która dzięki licznym odwołaniom do metaforyki teatralnej ujawnia i tematyzuje mechanizmy rządzące konwencją kryminalną.
The article looks at three aspects of the crime novel Strachy w Biesalu (Fears in Biesal, 1958) penned by Jerzy Putrament. In the first part of the text, the author describes how this work aligned with the process of changing the official stand on action novels, a shift that was characteristic of the post-Stalinist thaw. The second segment of the article features an analysis of the metafictional and pastiche protagonist of Putrament's novel, revealing and extracting themes related to mechanisms governing the convention of crime fiction. The final part reconstructs the social and cultural context of Fears in Biesal – the novel refers to the processes of women's emancipation and gender stereotypes associated with these processes that were characteristic of the second half of the 1950s.

The main issues discussed in this article are the intertextual relationships between two novels: one the most famous modernistic texts — Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and The Hours by Michael Cunningham. The American writer’s novel alludes already in the title to Woolf’s work. The Hours was the working title for Mrs Dalloway. The detailed analysis of the various references to it acknowledges the hypotext in the Cunningham novel and proves that intertextuality in this case has its mainly existential dimension: for heroines of The Hours Mrs Dalloway provides an opportunity for not only re-writing or re-reading but for re-existing as well.

Opening sentences raise a lot of interest of both linguists and common Polish speakers. It is evident from numerous websites in which Internet users share their observations on the best opening sentences of books (most often novels), as well as theoretical papers and writing guides. The analysis of opening sentences of ten novels by Marek Krajewski (co-author of two of them being Mariusz Czubaj) is to provide an answer to the question to what extent the utterance opening of the texts of the Wroc³aw-based prose writer fulfill the requirements to be met by such type of constructions. It turns out that most crucial are syntactic and semantic features rather than lexical ones. The clash between theoretical assumptions and the M. Krajewski’s writing practice shows that opening sentences of his novels not always fall into classical determinants of incipient formulas. It also illustrates the thesis that a skillful writer does not need to cling to theoretical assumptions to create good opening sentences and novels translated into nearly twenty languages.

Opis:
Set during the midst of the London Blitz, Elizabeth Bowen’s The Heat of the Day revolves around a narrative of espionage, but unlike many novels from the spy genre, it refuses to disclose all of its secrets. Instead, the novel’s dense and complex language, which so effectively expresses the dislocating effects of a city under attack, resists an easy or uncomplicated reading. This article examines the motif of reading within the novel, which manifests when its protagonist, Stella Rodney, learns her lover Robert is a Nazi spy. In her efforts to locate proof of his defection, Stella becomes caught in a recurrent but indeterminable task of rereading past events, a movement which attempts to remember the past but also foregrounds a fundamental inability to ever wholly resolve its enigmas. When Stella fails to read her past for lost clues, she is prevented from viewing the events of her life as a coherent and meaningful narrative. The novel’s difficult language reflects this lack of resolution, refusing to assimilate the events it depicts into a straightforward account. With its wartime setting as a disorienting backdrop, The Heat of the Day undermines the purpose of reading as the discovery of sense and meaning, producing instead only more questions and mysteries.

Raymond Federman’s Double or Nothing is a convoluted representation of the mentallyunstable mind existing as a series of six characters that are at once separate and conjoined: the horrors and traumatic events of the narrative past dismantle the unified subject into a series of schizophrenic sub-personalities, parts of the destabilized Author’s psyche, existing as separate fragments that eventually collide. Further, the imaginary room emerges as the Fifth Person, promising, but failing, to be a central stabilizer of the other fractured selves. Finally, the design of the text echoes the patterns of the traumatized mind, illustrating the inability of a narrative to construct a stable, unified subject and demonstrating the inadequacy of traditional narrative forms. The text, with its obliterations, cropped phrases, and pictorial manifestations, becomes the Sixth Person. However, in the end, the text shows that the past cannot be erased, explained, or reversed; neither can the experimental nature of the novel reach beyond the traumatized, schizoid subject to represent the horrors of the past that caused the Author’s psychotic breach. Federman has rolled a hard six that will repeatedly fragment and unite, just as the traumatic past continues to repeat itself as one that defies representation.

Cancer and its treatment are well-recognized risk factors for venous thromboembolism. The risk of thrombotic complications increases 4–7-fold in cancer patients and coexistence of both pathologies is associated with shorter survival. Incidence of thrombosis depends on the tumour type, antineoplastic and supportive therapy, and patient-related factors such as age, physical activity and comorbidities. Current recommendations of scientific societies indicate a dominant role of low molecular weight heparins in the treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism in cancer patients. Long duration of the anticoagulant effect, and the subcutaneous administration route of heparins call for a safer therapeutic option, and one that would be more convenient for the patient. New oral anticoagulants: dabigatran, rivaroxaban, and apixaban, are indicated as prevention of venous thromboembolism following an orthopaedic surgery, and as stroke prevention in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, with rivaroxaban also applied in the treatment of acute deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. In the trials evaluating the efficacy of novel oral anticoagulants, they have been compared with enoxaparin or vitamin K antagonists. Cancer patients accounted for a small percentage of the trial population, and they were rarely analysed in subgroup analysis. It was only in the phase II ADVOCATE study that the target group were patients receiving chemotherapy. Direct comparison between test drug and low molecular weight heparins was not performed. The currently available study results do not allow us to recommend the new oral anticoagulants for the treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism associated with cancer.

Characteristics of onomastics, as the one of many fields of the linguistic studies and the literary onomastics, which is a part of it, preludes the analysis performed in this paper. The emphasis has been put on one of the areas of this study – anthroponymy. According to this discipline, it was possible to investigate Polish surnames and depict the history of their advancement and modifications throughout centuries, basing on the mentioned novel. Author used the literary realism in the historical novel – genre recognizable for positivism and genuinely showed the process of transformations and modifications in Polish names, which was held within social groups like nobility, the middle class, peasantry and clergy. This thesis shows how did the author assort each personal name and directs to sources, that could have inspired him to create his characters and name them accordingly to the proper period and particular social group.

The article presents young Żeromski’s fascination with the writings of Paul Bourget. Basing on the Polish writer’s journal entries concerned with Une crime d’amour and Mensonges one can trace an ambivalent attitude towards those psychological novels developed in the late 1880s. By young Żeromski’s standards Bourget falls behind other masters of prose he admires at the time, namely Turgenev and Dostoyevsky. Still, despite Bourget’s didacticism, the aspiring youth cannot refrain from fascination for the descriptions of characters, whose emotions so often so clearly mirror his own. There are at least a few plots (an aspiring writer’s ambitions in the great world, the memory of a love lost etc.) which could have caught Żeromski’s attention as valid attempts to capture experiences known to him as well. It is therefore the identification process that stands in the way of condemning the moralistic ambitions of Bourget and allows the French writer’s works to remain an important point of reference for the Polish witer’s upcoming writing endeavors.

This paper is an attempt at finding answers to the following questions: How can the term gay crime novel be understood? Has such a sub-genre been established in Poland? Is it a sub-genre of crime fiction or rather gay novel? The author examines works by such writers as Edward Pasewicz (Śmierć w darkroomie [The Death in the Darkroom]), Michał Witkowski (Drwal [The Woodcutter], Zbrodniarz i dziewczyna [The Criminal and the Girl]), and Andrzej Selerowicz (Kryptonim „Hiacynt” [Codename Hyacinth], Zbrodnia, której nie było [The Crime that Never Was]). The analysis of the works is focused on the use of the crime scheme and selected writ-ing techniques in the context of the most popular strategies typical of crime fiction convention (e.g. a shift towards a socially engaged novel, urban space exploration, psychologisation of protagonists) as well as the most important characteristics of naturalistic novel (different ideas of presenting social groups).

Opis:
Michel Butor, born in 1926, one of the leaders of the French New Novel movement, has written only four novels between 1954 and 1960. The most famous of them is La Modification (Second thoughts), published in 1957. The author of the paper analyzes two other Butor’s novels: L’Emploi du temps (Passing time) – 1956, and Degrés (Degrees) – 1960. The theme of absence is crucial in both of them. In the former, the novel, presented as the diary of Jacques Revel, a young Frenchman spending a year in Bleston (a fictitious English city vaguely similar to Manchester), describes the narrator’s struggle to survive in a double – spatial and temporal – labyrinth. The first of them, formed by Bleston’s streets, squares and parks, is symbolized by the City plan. During his one year sojourn in the city, using its plan, Revel learns patiently how to move in its different districts, and in its strange labyrinth – strange because devoid any centre – that at the end stops annoying him. The other, the temporal one, symbolized by the diary itself, the labyrinth of the human memory, discovered by the narrator rather lately, somewhere in the middle of the year passed in Bleston, becomes, by contrast, more and more dense and complex, which is reflected by an increasinly complex narration used to describe the past. However, at the moment Revel is leaving the city, he is still unable to recall and to describe the events of the 29th of February 1952. This gap, this absence, symbolizes his defeat as the narrator, and, in the same time, the human memory’s limits. In Degrees temporal and spatial structures are also very important. This time round, however, the problems of the narration itself, become predominant. Considered from this point of view, the novel announces Gerard Genette’s work Narrative Discourse and his theoretical discussion of two narratological categories: narrative voice and narrative mode. Having transgressed his narrative competences, Pierre Vernier, the narrator of the first and the second parts of the novel, who, taking as a starting point, a complete account of one hour at school, tries to describe the whole world and various aspects of the human civilization for the benefit of his nephew, Pierre Eller, must fail and disappear, as the narrator, from the third part, which is narrated by another narrator, less audacious and more credible.

Opis:
Retracing in his novel the labyrinthine journey that leads Oedipus from the place of his abomination (Thebes) to the city of his future glory (Colonus), Henry Bauchau fills the emptiness between Sophocles’s Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus. Bauchau’s hero, a powerful king, loses everything and stabs his eyes out when the cruel truth about his real identity is revealed. Blind, homeless, devoid of meaning of life, Oedipus leaves on a journey to pass away anywhere. However, his way to death turns out to be, thanks to benevolent presence of others and art’s liberating power, the road to personal elucidation. The story of Bauchau’s Oedipus, who finally recognizes himself as a truly human, is based therefore on the passage between absence and presence, between darkness and lucidity, on the union of contradictions which symbolize the complexity of human nature. This paper attempts to analyse different representations of absence in Bauchau’s novel. Afterwards, the article focuses on the ways which facilitate Oedipus’s road leading from depersonalization to rediscovery of his own identity.

The purpose of the article is to present the campus novel from an angle that would expose the qualities latent in a genre by pointing to the theme of conflict. The paper has been divided into three parts, each addressing one kind of conflict which can be distinguished from the generic pattern (the story about academics in the university setting). The analysed themes are recurrent in the campus novel – a town and gown row, a teacher-teacher conflict, and a clash between a teacher and a student. The conflicts are illustrated by works of David Lodge, Malcolm Bradbury and Kingsley Amis.

Opis:
This article is a comparative analysis of Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s The Doctor’s Wife and Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. Braddon’s novel has been interpreted as an imitation of Flaubert’s. The basis of the analysis is a Polish translation of Braddon’s novel (Żona doktora, „Gazeta Warszawska” 1867). This translation was published earlier than the translation of Madame Bovary (1878). Braddon’s works were quite popular in Poland and they were translated into Polish as well. It is shown that Braddon’s novel was not a copy of Flaubert’s work. The similarities concern the plot (a married woman’s affair) and psychological characterisation of the eponymous character (a girl who is absorbed her books and lives in the world of fantasy). In the crucial scene of the novel, Braddon makes a different choice than Flaubert does: her protagonist, who is in love with a seducer, does not commit adultery. Braddon explained that this was due to Protestantism and platonic concept of love which does not need physical involvement. Braddon shows three stages of the protagonist’s history: 1) her youth filled with books; 2) her unhappy marriage (the wife does not love the husband but the seducer); 3) after her husband’s and lover’s deaths the protagonist receives a large amount of money and begins to perform important social roles. This is how Braddon criticises the educational system of Victorian England and depicts a model which is a form of pedagogy preparing people for practical life.

The article is a discussion of a study by Rafał Pokrywka titled Współczesna powieść niemieckojęzyczna (Kraków 2018). The author of the study analysed selected works written at the turn of the 21st century, and – in an interesting manner – developed his discussion around a progression of three dimensions of time: the past, the present, and the future, which constitute the contexts for reading individual narratives. The interpretations of German, Austrian, and Swiss novels, both these which exist as Polish translations and these which have not yet been translated, are accompanied by cultural and sociological contexts, while the (re)definitions of the words used in the title of Pokrywka’s volume presented in the introduction enable one to place this original overview in the context of modern studies on the most recent literature.

But Nothomb also develops on an extra-diegetic level, as the meta-narrative of the genesis of the Freudian Family Romance or the Novel itself. Between the concepts of “bastard” and “foundling,” this novel contains many autobiographical elements and borrows from other literary works, most noticeably from Oscar Wilde’s collection Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime.

The article is an attempt at presenting Joanna Bator’s novel Ciemno, prawie noc as a book belonging to engaged literature and using the popular convention to criticise society. The first part contains examples and theoretical considerations about the changes in the convention of the horror novel, which consists of a gothic novel with various genres such as horror, thriller and detective story. The matter of their social dimension was touched on, for instance, with reference to Noël Caroll’s theory, Scandinavian detective story or the books by Alice Munro. The second part of article is composed of the review of conventional implements used by Bator that are typical of gothic novel, detective story, horror and fairytale. The use of specific implements, their accumulation and the disturbance of the convention are interpreted as a way of getting the readers to loose the well-known schema and drawing their attention to the relevant social problems. The convention of popular literature in Ciemno, prawie noc is designed for something more than only entertainment.
Artykuł stanowi próbę przedstawienia powieści Joanny Bator Ciemno, prawie noc jako utworu należącego do literatury zaangażowanej i wykorzystującego popularną konwencję w celu dokonania krytyki społeczeństwa.

The purpose of the essay is to introduce the figure of a contemporary Spanish author, Vicente Luis Mora, and his novel Centroeuropa to the Polish literary researchers, as well as to analyze the special character of this novel in terms of reading agreement and the most adequate terminology concerning the literary genre, to which it belongs, based on the form of typological characteristics of a novel that includes ten essential points: paratext, plot, narration, time structure, poetics, the question of mimesis, the loyalty of history towards History, metatextuality, ideological character and the strategies used by the author. On the basis of these reflections it can be concluded that Centroeuropa by Vicente Luis Mora is a metanovel about a man who is looking for his way in a breakthrough moment in the history of Europe, between the 18th and 19th century, in the declining feudal‑absolutist Prussia and the emerging liberal‑capitalist Prussia, in the embryonic society, where economic and political norms haven’t been fully constructed yet and women are not full‑fledged members of society. Centroeuropa is a multi‑dimensional novel inspired by the past of Central Europe, but – above all – a metanovel about writing and its servitude.

The author shows that Makuszyński’s novel inspired Lewandowski to create an intriguing story, full of surprising twists and turns, set in the cyberworld, important for the contemporary young readers. Satan and Company can be considered a worthy continuation of Makuszyński’s novel, showing a cheerful life philosophy. Lewandowksi provides his readers with humour and optimism that were the hallmarks of Makuszyński’s fiction. Intertextuality seems to be Alan Moore’s trademark. In his most famous comic books and graphic novels, such as V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Lost Girls or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, he often refers to other texts of high and low culture. Therefore, a certain level of cultural competence is required to decode various messages hidden by the British writer. In V for Vendetta intertextuality is employed to convey certain political and ideological messages in a more subtle and indirect way. Through various allusions and quotations, Moore presents his views on the condition of the depicted society as well as on the political clash between a fascist state and its anarchist enemy. Intertextual references are also included in the graphics of the comic book. It is the aim of this paper to discuss if, how and to what extent intertextuality can influence the complexity of the graphic novel’s message and be used to indirectly convey particular political and social ideas.

The author reads the story as a continuation of the nineteenth century novel about a social decay. He proves that the depicted society, delighted with consumer culture, wastes its opportunities for development. As a result of the breakdown of social ties and constant work, urbanites suffer from permanent loneliness. The disillusionment is alsointensified by the disappearance of spirituality.. The crisis of authority and social antagonisms further undermine the integrity and the sense of coherencein the self. But Żulczyk’s characters fail to reflect on life, which the author of the article sees as the sign of immaturity.

Opis:
The dominant hierarchy upon which the order of existence is predetermined has placed the man at the centre of creation; which is also substantiated by cultural norms that prioritized generic divides. The principles of feminism have been created to alter patriarchal hegemony in order to reconstruct the distorted female self of an egalitarian society. However, in an attempt to reconstruct these misconceptions upheld by patriarchy, most feminist texts and criticisms have denied the woman the agency of freewill and independent choices, except the continuous emphasis on feminist objectification that patriarchy seem to propagate. It is against this backdrop, that this paper interrogates the subjugation of the woman by her fellow woman and to outline a model of feminist liberation. This is consequent upon the fact that even at the disruption of patriarchy, some feminist scholars have failed to account for the role of women in using men as puns in the subjugation of their fellow women in the African novel. Consequently, this paper replicates Chinweizu’s Masculinist Dissection of Matriarchy and uses feminist-deconstruction to interrogate Ama Ata Aidoo’s Changes and Nawal El Saadawi’s A Woman at point Zero. To this effect, it submits that women are stakeholders in the structure of matriarchy and the substructure of patriarchy and men are mere puns in the structure of matriarchal subjugation of their fellow woman. The concept of pun(s) which is play on word is used in its expounded form on how women manipulate men physically and psychologically for their economic and political gains.

Financial crime was one of the recurring themes in crime stories written in the period of socialist Poland. The writer who first undertook this subject was Leopold Tyrmand in his book “The Man with the White Eyes” (1955). The publication of this book is considered one of the symptoms of the cultural “thaw” and the end of real socialism. Tyrmand shows crime which develops when the state, cooperative and private businesses meet, but also the corruption and powerlessness of Citizen’s Militia. During Władysław Gomułka’s administration (1956–1970), this problem often recurred e.g. in the books written by Anna Kłodzińska and Barbara Gordon. Very often the villain was the “fraudulent director”. Both the meat scandal and the leather scandal were described in crime novels. Edward Gierek’s administration (1970–1980) was the time when the theme of financial crime was abandoned, but it returned after the introduction of martial law in 1981. This time, it was pointed out that it was the previous administration that had committed frauds. Crime novels accurately described the economic abnormalities of socialist Poland, the hampering of individual initiatives and the omnipresent corruption, but they also reflected the state’s policy towards the people in power who were illegally gaining wealth.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the consumers’ attitudes towards selected ethnic cuisines. Accordingly, a quantitative assessment (based on a survey questionnaire) and a qualitative assessment (FGI) were carried out. The quantitative assessment was conducted with 500 respondents selected using quota-sampling, taking their gender and age into consideration. This allowed to determine the frequency of eating selected ethnic cuisines (Japanese, Chinese, Mexican and American), hear the respondents’ opinions on the characteristics of specific cuisines, and develop the profiles of consumers moderately or strongly interested in the consumption of the relevant products (referred to as “light users” and “heavy users”). In 2016, focus group interviews were conducted with the two consumer groups (2 interviews for each cuisine). As a result, the interviews provided information about the respondents’ motivation to eat ethnic food, their views on the market offering and sources of information about this type of products. Also, it enabled outlining the image of ethnic meal eaters. As shown by this study, Polish consumers differ in their interest in ethnic food which is driven by product availability, moderate prices and access to information. Also, differences were discovered in their attitudes towards specific cuisines, depending on the demographic, economic and social characteristics of the respondents.

In this article we focus on the problem of memory realised in the artistic space of E.G. Vodolazkin’s Aviator. The aim of the study is to analyse memory as a mechanism shaping the novel’s structure. In order to reach this goal, it seems important to explore the structure of the literary text, to understand the meaning of categories of memory and memories, while searching for key ideas of the text. The analysis reveals the significance of the category of memory, emphasising not only the specificity of the novel’s fictional and compositional structure, but also revealing a complex of philosophical ideas and motifs related in particular to understanding the theme of memory as overcoming time (including death) and the issue of spiritual identity formation.

Her straying (that embraces the form of a relative deterritorialization in a Deleuzian sense) lasts one year and it is built up geographically upon a descent (more or less symbolical) to the South of France and, after that, she comes back to Paris and encloses the spatial and textual curl. From a spatial point of view, she turns into a heterotopia (Foucault) every place where she is located, fact that reflects her incapability of constituting a personal, intimate space. The railway stations, the trains, the hotels, the improvised houses of those with no fixed abode are turning, according to Marc Augé’s terminology, into a « non-lieux » that excludes human being. Her vagrancy is characterized through a continuous flight from police and people and through a continuous decrease of her standard of living and dignity. It’s not about a quest of oneself, but about a loss of oneself. Urged by a strong feeling of culpability, her vagrancy is a self-punishment that comes to an end when the concerns of her problems disappear and she finds out that her lover is alive.

The aim of the paper is to show the history of Polish gay novel and explain the very term. However, the essence of the research problem is not the history itself, but drawing attention to the need of adopting a multidimensional perspective in the deliberations concerning homosexuality in general (including gay novel). An interdisciplinary approach to the issue enables one to make observations concerning the impact of social and political realities on literature, while at the same time to analyse a work of art as a statement in public debate on homosexuality and homosexuals.

Savitzkaya, hardly known to French public, delights contemporary readers with his style, displaying both peculiar and variegated characteristics. Although he dispenses with the matters of genre, his latest texts (Célébration d’un mariage improbable et illimité, 2002, Exquise Louise, 2003, Fou trop poli, 2005) are still thought to represent the novel. His peculiarity lies in that he contrasts a daily routine with brilliantly worked form, nevertheless well suited to depict it. His predilection for language is pervasive in his style, showing strong preference for details (still, it stands in a stark contrast to the practice of the Nouveaux Romanciers of the 20th century). Savitzkaya asserts himself with the aid of conciseness, draws to a large extent upon surprising stylistic devices, juggles with words, even if paying careful attention to their precision. Finally, he acts as a genuine poet, reviving fragrances and colors of childhood. All in all, the whole of his work is designed to bring his readers to take pleasure in living.

This review addresses the need to evaluate the biological effects of novel foods, how this can be achieved and the role of animal models in this process. The selection of an appropriate model or combination of approaches is most important, together with an awareness of the shortcomings of that particular method. In mammals the gastrointestinal tract not only acts as the site of absorption of nutrients and non-nutrients, but provides a protective barrier between the environment and the body. As such this interface is exposed to relatively high concentrations of the individual chemicals that are dietary components. It is therefore essential to understand how novel foods can change the structure, growth and function of the gut in particular. Effects may be both beneficial and detrimental and have an impact on the function of other organs in the body. However, due to the wide-ranging implications of this broad topic, the discussion here will focus on events within the gastrointestinal tract, in the context of the evaluation of novel foods.

Opis:
This article proposes a reflection on a tale that can be a bridge between “literature for children and teens” and “literature for adults”: The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Sicily by Dino Buzzati. It offers a link between fable and fantasy novel and contains all of the elements of the fairy tale that Vladimir Propp planned in 1928: loss, departure, challenges to overcome, reward, and return. It is closely connected to its historical reality (the period after the Second World War), but at the same time it detaches itself from that period through the fantastic element. In short, the book is a mirror of Buzzati’s literary personality and the first literary work of a restless but sensitive author who always felt linked to painting and writing, to adults and children, to reality and evasion.

In these peritexts he juxtapposes the licentious novels with his own devout works of fiction, which are, in his own words, not only valuable and worth recommending, but also capable of saving the readers’ souls, put in danger by other texts. In any case, a close reading of these peritexts reveals a view which challenges the idea of the novel’s insidiousness and which bears witness to Camus’s great fascination with this officially condemned literary genre.

Opis:
Nagiel’s novels have not attracted researchers’ attention, except for some references to works devoted to the development of mystery novels in Poland, the image of Warsaw in Polish literature of the 19th century, or the history of Polish immigrant society press. When writing his crime novels – Tajemnica Nalewek and Sęp – the author followed the example of foreign novels, mainly English and French ones. The main character of his crime novels, detective Fryga, is not the scientist type who investigates data in his quiet office, library or laboratory. He resembles Vidocq and one of his literary counterparts, the character of Gaboriau’s novel – policeman Lecoq. In his investigation, he owes a lot to coincidence and luck; he is active, energetic and creative, trying to speed up events, he takes the initiative in the fight against crime. In Nagiel’s novels, mystery not only is connected with the motif of crime, the secret behind the crime and an attempt to solve it, but also seems to be an inherent element of the world. The world created by Nagiel is dark, complex and anxiety-provoking. Solving the crime stories and punishing culprits mean the triumph of justice, social order and convention, but they do not eliminate the sense of threat.

The article focuses on two purposes. On the one hand, it constitutes an attempt to redefine the genre of historical novel in the circumstances in which the attempts made so far have turned out to be insufficient. The new definition shifts the centre of gravity from structural features (which are impossible to be determined following the experience of the narrativization of history) to the poetics of reception. On the other hand, the article also has its interpretative purpose which entails complicating the results of the analysis through the scrutiny of the chess novel that multiplies the historicity of the literary work and triggers more questions to be raised. Thus, the article aims at an alternative description of historical prose as an important literary experience of today’s world.

It seems that Nipu reality might be considered in categories of realism and probability, as the chapter is analyzed in the context to the story line of the whole book. Krasicki, as he wrote about Thomas Moore, defined utopia as a political project for future. Nipu citizens, as fugitives from the Conquest, live happy lives in isolation preserving past reality.

This article deals with the question of the so-called Bovarism in The Awakening, the famous novel written by Kate Chopin. When it was first published in 1899, it was universally condemned for its alleged obscenity, just like its French predecessor. It is true, however, that unlike Flaubert’s book, The Awakening did not find itself in the dock, faced with charges of immorality, but the hostile reviews condemned the novel to many decades of obscurity. In this article, I try to return to the question of parallels between the two novels, which can be seen on many levels. Some similarities concern both male and female characters, while others are to do with specific narrative decisions and solutions. The most conspicuous example of the latter is the suicidal death of both heroines.

In my reading of this work I use the category of contingency which I define by referring to the German philosopher Odo Marquard and literary theories of a monographer of the contigency in literature and film Rafał Koschany. These are the basic inspirations for reflections on Tristram as a character, and simultaneously, narrator in the novel. In my view contingency manifests itself in Sterne's work in a two-fold manner it affects Tristram's life and narration. I will try to focus on the different ways in which these manifestations relate to each other.

Opis:
The paper discusses - against the background of selected philosophical concepts - two basic problems related to the meaning of subject in the well-known novel by Marcel Proust entitled A la reserche du temps perdu. The first of the analyzed problems is related to the question what the meaning (signifie) of subject is, and the second, formulated in opposition to the postmodemistic standpoint of Gilles Deleuze, to the reasons why the significance (Bedeutsamkeit) of the subject is so intensively exposed in the novel. The subject that can be found in Proust’s masterpiece is considered as an egotic, individual, and stratified entity, whose deepest, spiritual layer ensures identity, and, most probably, exists beyond time. The spiritual subject is distinguished by persistent philosophical pursue of the essential truths of human being, and is also concentrated on the role of the author and art. The profound domain of truth remains hidden as long as we are absorbed by everyday life. It is the specific mental power pertaining to the spiritual subject, i.e. our intelligence, that allows us to reveal that domain. Only the non-mimetic literature, as postulated and realized in Proust’s novel, employing the method of “three-dimensional psychology” relying on intelligence, instead of commonly used “two-dimensional psychology”, can present to the eyes of potential readers, as if through the optical glasses, the essential truths of subjective worlds. The significance of the subject finds its expression not only in the application of the first-person narrative form, in the differentiation between the latent and revealed narrator - the fact that creates an aesthetic impression of surprise, in the monophonic character of the novel related to the structural unity imposed by the latent narrator, but also in the specific poeticity of the novel. Determining the style of Proustian prose, this poeticity evokes the atmosphere of clarity and happiness. The poeticity is achieved by such means of style as metaphors, various cultural references shown through the prism of subjective experience, phrasal complexity, melodiousness, and others.

This is connected with the appearance of the ellipsis as the main plot device, which is not yet present in The Joke. This change in the way of narrating represents another and, perhaps, a deeper dividing line in Kundera’s writing than switching to another language (from Czech to French), the change of the setting (from Czechoslovakia to Western countries) and the change of the political system (from communist to ‘imagological’) as an instrument of oppression.

The paper analyzes a recent experiment in the collaborative production of ethnographic knowledge and the use of the graphic novel form as an alternative to the conventional academic monograph. Lissa: A Story about Medical Promise, Friendship, and Revolution (2017) is discussed here as a useful tool in the age of globalization for building recognition of the need to protect the lives of people other than our immediate kin, tribe, race, or nation. The paper argues that both the collaborative research behind the story and the formal experimentation stem from the authors’ sense of accountability to their informants. By telling a story about distant others who are given names and faces, Lissa’s authors encourage readers to develop empathy across borders.

The aim of this paper is to use cognitive approach in order to analyse the topic of religion in two novels by Iain Banks. I argue that in both The Wasp Factory and Consider Phlebas Banks presents divine thoughts as cognitively natural for humans, since, according to neuroscience, the propensity for religiosity is inborn and universal. Banks’s novels show that people have an innate need to fill space with agents, and cannot refrain from ascribing illusory purpose to the cruel chaos of the surrounding world.

Western society and its fi ction faces the overwhelming problem of masculinity and its modeling. The era of war, capitalism, the challenges of feminism aff ect the ideology within which men are constructed both as individuals and as a social group. John Fowles’s fi ction tackles the crucial issue of male power and control as masculinity is put to test and trial in his 1965 novel The Magus. The defi nition of manhood, male virility and social respectability of the period shape the 20th century male characters in Fowles’s fi ction. This paper aims to explore how John Fowles investigates the role of masculinity and power myths on the personal level of relationship and a wider scale of war and capitalism in The Magus. Notions of masculinity off er the protagonist, Nicholas Urfe, a sense of a superiority and power over women in the course of the novel. Among the goals of the project is to examine the mythical journey of Nicholas, which becomes a testing ground of his masculinity and maturity, as well his trial and ‘disintoxication,’ which is intended to help him to reevaluate his life and his relationships with women. One of the issues posed is whether Nicholas Urfe is reborn as a new man at the end of his search for redemption or if he remains the same egotistic, ‘lone wolf’ as he appears in the beginning of the novel.

Opis:
Europe looked with the eyes of the Macedonian writer. Macedonian writer looked at the eyes of Europe In this text the emphasis is put on the topic of the individual and transtemporal identity phenomen of Macedonian writer in European point of view and also of European imagology picture in the eyes of Macedonian writer. In that case, the paper explores the specific forms of irony and humour in the postmodern novel “Hidden camera” by Macedonian writer Lidija Dimkovska, originally published in Macedonia in 2004, and later translated into several languages. This novel deals with the creative image, fictional and imagological conceptions of Macedonian view on European space today and also the European view on Macedonian modern realities. (This novel was translated in year 2007, for example, into Slovak language and in 2010 into Polish). Lidija Dimkovska witness that personal histories in a specific geo‑political (European) space makes an individuals history itself when our personal histories touch, cope with each to other, are crucified on their paths, and go parallel to each other to exchange their content, edges, myths and realities. The eternal questions about identity, love, death, freedom etc. always wait for personal answers, and here is the home for Dimkovska’s writing. Of course, the answers can be very different and filled with even contradictory feelings, but what is important for this writer in writing, is that her whole being writes, with all its possible strength. In proportion with the Slovak hole reception of “Hidden camera”, the contribution points out the need for synthetic reconstruction of the whole scientific research of irony forms and aplications of them in this novel, and also the rehabilitation of metodological problems of common sense.

In the early 19th century, the Italian literature did not have a mature novel, as is known today. The Italian novelist, Manzoni, and his masterpiece The Betrothed, set a solid basis for the contemporary Italian novel; thanks to its’ narrative characteristics that helped the novelist in achieving different reformative goals, woven stupendously with fictional, historical and realistic threads. The main purpose of this study is to apply an analytical and thematic approach on the structure and narrator of the novel. Furthermore, the research aims to distinguish the main artistic characteristics adopted from the European historical novel. The study then focuses on analyzing the function of the anonymous author’s fictional frame and how it created a diversity in the narrative levels. The research also highlights the importance of the omniscient narrator, the strong relations between the narrator and the narratee, the different narrative perspectives, and finally the polyphony: techniques that enhanced the realistic dimension of the novel.

Carrier’s novel was published in the same year as Nègres blancs d’Amérique by Pierre Vallières and it relies on the same dialectics between the colonizer and the colonized that was prevalent in Québécois narrative prose in the 1960s. While being grounded in this cultural context, Carrier transforms this dialectic by setting his narrative in a rural environment and against the background of World War II (the visitation of a fallen French-Canadian soldier whose remains are escorted to his native village by English-Canadian comrades). Such aesthetic reworking complexifies the ideological message of Carrier’s novel. I will study the interplay between national ideology and Carrier’s narratives strategies and particularly on the clash between ethnic stereotypes and the « carnavalesque » and the grotesque.

This article begins with a brief characterization of the writer’s notebook as a special text type. Then the article analyzes structural and compositional features that notebooks of the 19th and 20th centuries have in common with postmodernist prose. These features include: a) fragmentary narration; chaotic composition; many syntactic and semantic ellipses; b) the absence of one main idea and an important role of chance in the creative process; c) an opportunity to start reading a text from any of its parts, even from the end; d) a great number of intertextual links; similarity to hypertext; e) no stylistic and thematic limitations, etc. There are three possible explanations of these points of convergence: a psychological one, a linguistic one and a historical-literary one.

The aim of this article is showing the view of townspeople portrayed by Ewa Ostrowska in her works: Sidła strachu (The snare of fear), Abonent czasowo niedostępny (The subscriber temporarily unavailable), Pamiętaj o Róży (Remember Rose), Co słychać za tymi drzwiami (What is heard behind this door), Bez wybaczenia (Without forgiveness). In Ewa Ostrowska’s works, contemporary townspeople in their free time prefer to walk in modern shopping centers, to watch TV and also to peek at neighbours or to write denunciation of theirs. Her novels are ruthless criticism of townspeople morality and reveal their faults and vices. It is also a synthetic depiction of European civilization’s changes in the 20th century.

Architecture and palimpsest gardens in the work of Jean-Paul Goux  The novels of Jean-Paul Goux focus one after another on the different implications of the act of inhabiting – philosophical, existential, political and artistic implications. The subject arises for him in the eighties, which are the main turning point in his reflection and work. With his novel The Gardens of Morgante, published in 1989, he invents a new kind of storytelling, in which voices do not only answer one another, but also interact and quote one another. At first the reader feels lost in a text built on the principle of anamorphosis, using a distended syntax. He nevertheless reaches, now and again, a kind of bliss, as he realises that he is himself inhabiting a prose and an enclosed space in which Time has laid itself down.

Opis:
The object of this analysis are the currently available literary works of Umberto Eco's as different manifestations of the so-called professorenroman (academic novel). Using the concept of the professorenroman as a starting point, the author claims that none of the Italian author's novels falls within this genre. Moreover, the concepts of an academic novel or a campus novel are also insufficient when it comes to Eco's books analysis. In order to popularise his own research Eco makes use of various literary, syncretic and non-literary genre patters, both the contemporary and the old ones. He is also often testing different theoretical literary concepts constructed by him or other authors. A characteristic feature of many of his novels is their cognitive over-informativeness, which on one hand hinders their reception, on the other signals methodological and methodical problems present in the study of humanities.
Misję popularyzacji, najczęściej własnych, badań naukowych realizuje Eco wykorzystując, w powieściach najróżniejsze literackie, synkretyczne i nieliterackie formy gatunkowe: z przeszłości i współczesności.

Materiał analityczny stanowią tu utwory Arlington Park autorstwa Rachel Cusk, Hotel Świat Ali Smith i Dziewczęta i kobiety Alice Munro.
This article focuses on outlining the function of the presented space in the novella novel as an element constituting its coherence. The term “novella novel” (adopted from Krystyna Jakowska and defined by Elke D’hoker) refers to literary works that are generically situated between a coherently composed collection of short stories and a loose novelistic structure. The following works will serve as the material for the analysis: Arlington Park by Rachel Cusk, Hotel World by Ali Smith and Girls and Women by Alice Munro. These pieces are structured and classified differently. The former two are referred to as novels, while the latter one is called by some critics a novel or a hybrid text that can be perceived as a novel. Ultimately,  although sometimes used as an element that maintains coherence, the presented space is always  meticulously crafted, and it does not appear as quasi-real or geographically located. It is always valorised, metaphorized and ambiguous. Thus, such a common setting is not a “transparent” or “mechanical” element that unifies these stories, but rather one of the many aspects of the process that constitutes coherence of novels constructed in such a way, which remains open to interpretation.

These works are scrutinised as an example of a sub-genre of the crime novel, the historical crime story. The analysis emphasises the typical features of the convention, with particular focus on the hybrid side of its nature, i.e. entanglement in the dilemmas of the historical novel: the necessity to make a choice, and the manner in which the past is structured as one of the constituents of the presentation.

Opis:
In this paper, the Ukrainian trilogy by Józef Łobodowski has been interpreted as a historical novel, in which the described events took place in the Kuban region in the period between 1918 and 1922. The history of the Bolshevik revolution and the Civil War in the Caucasus area of Russia has been presented in a vivid story, which was inspired by the author’s personal experiences. The protagonist of the trilogy is the author’s own alter ego. The author’s participation in the discussed events significantly influenced the artistic form of the novel. The work possesses the features of a reportage novel, with its inherent verism, a trend towards a faithful depiction of life during the Russian Civil War, as well as elements of journalism that correspond to the writer’s journalistic activity. The reportage characteristics of the trilogy did not hinder the author from complying in his narration with the pattern of Sienkiewicz’s novel W pustyni i w puszczy (In Desert and Wilderness). In this way, the Ukrainian trilogy became a work with an original structure, in which the author also objectified his own emigrational experiences.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to study perceptions of India in three literary works, from the 20th and 21st century. The first part looks into the tenets of postcolonial theory and literary imagology as a possible methodological framework. Subsequently, premodern perceptions of India in the Croatian literary and cultural space are summarised. The central analysis focuses on the historical novelJaša Dalmatin (Jaša Dalmatin, Viceroy of Gujarat) by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, the travelogue U potrazi za staklenim gradom (In Search of the Glass City) by Željko Malnar and Borna Bebek, and the short story Indija (India) by Bekim Sejranović. The analysis demonstrates that each of these writings reconstructs premodern perceptions to some extent, but primarily introduces new perceptions that are linked to the specific social, cultural and ideological context in which these works were written. This indicates that literary perceptions are at the same time always acts of literary fiction as well as a socially and culturally construed production of meaning.

Opis:
This paper aims to link the writing of F.T. Marinetti’s Mafarka il futurista with the “great contest for an unpublished italian novel” proposed by the literary magazine Poesia. The negative ending of this competition raises several aesthetic issues, similar to the ones that may have guided the father of Futurism in writing his first novel. Therefore, it is possible to confirm the precocious interest of the Italian avant-garde in the novel genre.

Opis:
The article discusses the literary representations of the experience of unwanted pregnancy and abortion in new women’s prose. The author of the article refers to the novels published between 2003 and 2016. He considers the previously conducted research on the same subject (especially that of Agnieszka Mrozik). However, he concentrates mainly on the prose created in the last few years. He is above all interested in changes regarding the problem of unwanted pregnancy and abortion that occurred after 1989. When writing about this aspect of female experience has appeared in new prose, it is usually about the past and used to question the morality of the Polish People’s Republic. Recently the problem of unwanted pregnancy seems to be non‑existent as all issues pertaining to maternity are solved in a similar way: despite initial hesitations the heroines of the novels decide to have babies and never regret their choice. In this context Aleksandra Zielińska’s novel Przypadek Alicji (The case of Alice) seems to be especially interesting. Considerations concerning this novel appear in the final part of the article.

The aim of the paper is to show the relationship between different aspects of time and the way they are built in the construction of a narrator’s identity. To highlight the cultural specific dimension of identity a book describing life in ninetieth century China has been chosen. The main heroine ofLisa Sees’s novel Snów Flower and the Secret Fan Lily is telling her life story and presents in a detailed way certain roles she has taken and the things she has had to suffer from (among them the painful footbinding) before she became who she is. The relationship between her and her laotong ‘the same’ is the core of the novel and is also vital for Lily’s self-identification. The ways in which the identity is con- structed out of cultural bound details is shown altogether with the features that make it universal no matter which culture representative they concem. The ąuestion of various types of womanhood is also vital for the paper. The elementary units proposed by Wierzbicka in relation to time are taken into consideration to describe the portrait of the novel’s heroine. The results of the analysis show that the category of NOW is of the greatest im- portance as far as identity issues are concemed.

This paper’s aim is to provide a new interpretation of Martha C. Nussbaum’s and Richard Rorty’s views on the ethical role of literature. I pursue this aim in a threefold manner. First of all, I shortly discuss and provide a critique of previous comparisons by other authors. Afterwards, based on the presented critique of other comparisons, I present concise summaries of their respective views. Finally, I propose a double context for interpreting and assessing their views together. The main claim of the paper is the following: despite several differences in their philosophical underpinnings, Nussbaum’s and Rorty’s views on literature can be interpreted together using the context of John Rawls and Jacques Rancière. This interpretation consists of showing how uncovering a shared Rawlsian characteristic of Nussbaum’s and Rorty’s views paves a way for explaining how literature actually does ethical work, using some concepts of Rancière. Such a contextual reading allows for both a more thorough understanding of their respective projects and assessing their shared shortcomings.

Herman Melville’s novel

Opis:
The present text is an interpretation of two dialogues taken from Herman Melville’s novel The Confidence-Man. His Masquerade. One of the main topics prevailing in the conversations of the main characters from the novel traveling on the Mississippi River onboard of the steamboat “Fidéle” is friendship. Friendship, placed within the context of such notions as confidence, identity, feeling of alienation and authority, can be defined as a pre-social relation taking shape not between members of a community, but on a person-to-person plane. Another important reference point is the term “utility”, important in the capitalist “world-system” (the term coined by I. Wallerstein), which requires us to consider friendship within the framework of economic and legal circumstances and the categories of gain and loss. A juxtaposition of friendship with nature makes it finally possible to show that the former notion originates in the latter one, but exceeds it. Scientific tools used for a description of the order of nature are not precise enough to define or determine friendship between people.
