Opis:
This essay investigates the mechanisms of conceptual change in the discourse of Polish political emigration after the November Insurrection of 1830–1. To this end, a methodological apparatus is employed that has been elaborated by scholars of the German ‘history of concepts’ (Begriffsgeschichte) school and by Anglo-Saxon researchers specialised in the intellectual history and studies on ideology. Quoting a series of period source materials, I argue that the decades of 1830s and 1840s are interpretable in the Polish context as the time of a fundamental breakthrough in the sphere of ideas and political concepts. This turn was caused, for one thing, by the absorbability of Polish political discourse of the time, with a number of new ideas and concepts appearing, particularly those borrowed from the French debates ongoing in the period concerned. For another, it resulted from ardent disputes going on in the circles of the Polish Great Emigration. The concluding remarks stress the need to render a method applicable with such considerations empirically rooted since the dynamism of conceptual change is fundamentally different depending on the period as well as national and linguistic context.

The article proposes a new reading of Album biograficzne zasłużonych Polaków i Polek wieku XIX (1901–1903) [Biographic album of distinguished nineteenth-century Polish men and women (1901–1903)]. It is proven that this collection of characteristically designed biographies and an unusual collective biography is an important work of Polish humanities of the turn of the twentieth century that can be placed in relation to both Thomas Carlyle’s hero concept and Jacob Burckhardt’s postulates of the ‘anthropologisation of history’. The three selected biograms (Klaudyna Potocka’s by Aleksander Kraushar, August Hiacynt Dziarkowski’s by Józef Peszke and Adolf Pawiński’s by Jan Karol Kochanowski) are case studies allowing for the reconstruction of the dilemmas and text strategies each time specifying the biographer’s unique workshop and the techniques of uncovering it.

Opis:
Jerzy Wojciech Borejsza was the son of communist activist Jerzy Borejsza, referred to as an ‘international communist’, and Ewa née Kantor. His grandfather Abraham Goldberg was one of the leaders of Polish Zionists. Borejsza described himself as ‘a Pole of Jewish origin’. His personality was greatly influenced by the Second World War experiences, including the pogrom of Jews in German-occupied Lwów in July 1941 and the tragic events of occupied Warsaw. As a result of the decision of the communist party authorities, in 1952, Borejsza was sent to study in the Soviet Union, first to Kazan, then to Moscow. This made it impossible for him to study Polish philology in Warsaw; Borejsza, therefore, chose historical studies. After returning to Poland in 1957, he undertook research on the history of Polish emigration after the January Uprising (1863–4). He was also interested in the history of the Polish socialist movement and its connections to socialism in Western Europe. Later, Borejsza intervened in the historiography of the Crimean War (1853–6), intending to bring this forgotten armed conflict back to light. He coined the phrase ‘the beautiful nineteenth century’, in contrast to the twentieth century as a time of hatred, extermination, and the Holocaust. Initially, Borejsza worked at the Polish Academy of Sciences (1958–64), then at the University of Warsaw (1964–75). In the early 1970s, he began research on Italian fascism and Italy’s unsuccessful attempts to create a fascist International. He also conducted research on the worldview of Adolf Hitler, formulating the view that, apart from anti-Semitism, another vital component of the Führer’s racism was anti-Slavism. Borejsza was the author of a textbook on totalitarian and authoritarian systems in Europe in 1918–45 (entitled Schools of Hatred). After the anti-Semitic campaign launched by the communist authorities in March 1968, he was removed from the University of Warsaw (1975). From then until the end of his life, he worked at the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. In the years 2004–12, he was also employed at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. In the last years of his life, he researched Russian archives, dealing with the history of communism as a totalitarian system and the Comintern’s attitude toward Poland and Stalinist persecution of Polish communists. Jerzy W. Borejsza was an outstanding Polish researcher of the history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He also witnessed the tragic history of the century of extermination.

Sabina Brzozowska’s monograph consists of a coherent collection of comparative and historical and literary studies of various artistic and ideological aspects found in selected works of Polish and European modernism. The author focuses on the dramas by Stanisław Wyspiański, Stanisław Przybyszewski, Tadeusz Rittner, Tadeusz Miciński and on the prose by Wacław Berent, Miciński and Thomas Mann. The interpretations of the works included in the monograph show a common area of European nineteenth-century culture, especially of the modernist period. Brzozowska’s reading experience focused on uncovering the intertextual and comparative relationships between, for instance, Wyspiański’s Wesele (The Wedding) and Mann’s Buddenbrooks, Berent’s Ozimina (Snow Crop) and Czarodziejska Góra (The Magic Mountain), Rittner and Ibsen. High art literature of the modernist period found its counterpoint in popular culture, including the new media. The author reconstructed this development dynamic of modernist culture in multiple versions.

Unclear meanings of selected verbs from the first half of 19th century (based on Podróż bez celu by Fryderyk Skarbek) The aim of the article is to initiate the lexical research of Polish novels from 1800–1830. It is pursued by analyzing the meanings of verbs on the basis of Podróż bez celu (1824–1825) by Fryderyk Skarbek. In the conducted research, both the methods of computer linguistics and the classical philological method were used, which allowed for the necessary immersion into contexts and connotations. Verbs with meanings not noted in modern dictionaries of the Polish language were subjected to a detailed analysis. From the perspective of the general contemporary language, these are lexical, semantic and morphological archaisms. Half of them disappeared completely, in the remaining ones there were semantic shifts: extensions, narrowing, changes in designation, the analysis of which proves a significant tendency of the nineteenth-century resource to differentiate and expand.

Attention is drawn to the increasing number of biographies, and an attempt is made to answer the question of whether and in what direction this type of writing is changing our perception of women’s roles in Polish history. The article discusses the autobiographical literature written by women, whose publications reflect a growing interest in individual history and are a response to the demand to give a voice to previously unheard groups. It raises questions about the role of memoirs in describing past societies and gender order. The role of oral history methods in gaining insight into the past of women and society is also discussed.

Opis:
The article concerns the system of measures and weights used in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, mainly in the international port of Zanzibar in the years 1830-1888. The system was used in the trade between local, Arab, Indian and Western merchants. It drew from various traditions. In a relatively short time, after a period of standard negotiation between merchants and state officials, this eclectic system was, to some extent, embedded in the English tradition based on an ounce, pound and yard. While the measures of volume have retained their local character and have not been converted into European units, they have also been globalised through their weight equivalents. The author considers the Zanzibar system of measures and weights in a political and economic context. At the same time, he believes that the key to understanding the process of creating the Zanzibar system of measures and weights is to understand how it was conceptualised by the Western, and also indirectly local recipients.

The situation of the mentally ill changed significantly at the end of the eighteenth and in the nineteenth century, the era that saw a gradual dissemination of humanitarian ideas. In Prussia, the humanitarian reforms began in the early nineteenth century and resulted in the establishment of several institutions for the mentally ill, which were to appear in all provinces of the Hohenzollern monarchy. One of these facilities was the institution in Darłowo (Rügenwalde), which was established in 1842. The aim of the paper is to answer the question whether the humanitarian proposals were implemented in practice. To date, Polish researchers have studied these issues only in the context of the Province of Silesia and Province of Posen. The application of the comparative method and the analysis of the documents, including rules and guidelines for the facility in Darłowo, have demonstrated that the implementation of the reforms in the Province of Pomerania was significantly delayed. The facility in Darłowo was not meant as an institution for treating patients with mental illness until the 1860s. The organisation of the staff, little or no variety in categorising patients, and slim chances of leaving the facility indicate that its main aim was to isolate patients from the society. The humanitarian ideas can be deemed to have been implemented only as of 1863, i.e. after the institution had been reorganised. It was then that the main task of the facility became to effectively and non-violently treat the mentally ill and enable their return to society.

The article describes the role of Indian merchants in the international trade of Zanzibar during the period 1840-1888, i.e. from the strengthening of the rule of Sa’īd ibn Sultān Āl Bu Saʻīdī on the East African coast to the loss of this area by his son Bargaš ibn Sa’īd as a result of colonial conquest. The article deals with both objective and subjective factors determining the place of Indians in the trade of Zanzibar, including transport and communication, currency, factors related to participation in exchange mechanisms, negotiations, cooperation, competition and capital flow. Moreover, the author analyses the transformation within the Indian community of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, referring to the concept of commercial diaspora. He focuses on the ways in which the diaspora acted as an intermediary in the international exchange at various levels, adapting to changing political, technical and financial conditions. He scrutinises the changes in relations with Europeans, including the erosion of trust which was related to the increase of competition and risk. The author draws a model of the evolution of the Indian community from the stage in which access to brokering was controlled by the diasporaʼs narrow elite and the ruler to a situation in which the hierarchy of diaspora became fragmented and the access to credit opened up new opportunities to a broader wave of immigrants at various levels of exchange. This concerned both the direct trade with Western markets and the trade on the East African coast. The author used the archival sources from Zanzibar, Great Britain, Germany, the USA and France, including those created by the merchant companies from Staatsarchiv in Hamburg and the Peabody Essex Museum in Peabody (MA, USA)

The article deals with the problem of the historical transformation of French and Polish cabaret songs at the turn of the 20th century and the consequent changes in relations between the two cultural circles. The work is focused not only on a comparative analysis of the text and music material from Parisian and Polish cabarets, but also takes into account the sociological context of their functioning. This allows the reader to understand similarities and differences in the creation and development of cabaret life in France and Poland. The article analyzes in detail a unique method used to disseminate songs in France (by the societies of singers called les goguettes, les cafés chantants, les cafés-concerts and cabarets) and the absence of such the phenomenon in Poland. It is shown that these cultural incompatibilities may be one of reasons for the gradual movement of Polish authors and artists away from the conventional and aesthetic style, adopted initially from the Parisian cabarets that were perceived as model ones in Europe (eg. Le Chat Noir or Le Mirliton).

The paper is devoted to the research on the nineteenth-century women’s diaries, memoirs, and epistolography, carried out in the years 2013– 2017 as part of the international project of the National Program for the Development of Humanities: “Memoirs and letters of Polish authors from the Western Krai (Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine) in the years 1795–1918”. It discusses the status and role of the nineteenth-century women’s egodocuments in contemporary humanities. The study refers to the importance of autobiographical reflection and cultural perspective, and the major point of reference are selected examples of collections of manuscript letters, memoirs, and diaries of Polish women authors from the so-called Taken Lands1 (Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine) in the nineteenth century, and those women who were associated with these areas only for a period of time, as well as those who only wrote about the Taken Lands. This article focuses primarily on the collections of manuscripts in Lithuanian and Ukrainian archives and libraries (Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius, Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius, Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Kiev, Vernadsky National Library, Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv, V. Stefanyk National Scientific Library).
Artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce badań nad dziewiętnastowieczną literaturą pamiętnikarską oraz epistolografią kobiecą, jakie w latach 2013–2017 prowadzone były w ramach międzynarodowego projektu Narodowego Programu Rozwoju Humanistyki: „Pamiętniki i listy polskich autorów z Ziem Zabranych (Litwa, Białoruś, Ukraina) 1795–1918”. Dyskusji poddano status i miejsce dziewiętnastowiecznych kobiecych egodokumentów we współczesnej humanistyce. XIX stulecia podkreślano i treściowo pogłębiano trwałość spójni polskości i katolickości. Mimo rozwijającej się sekularyzacji wydobywano z przynależności do Kościoła powszechnego nowe znaczenia (J. Ordęga, S. Rawicz). Utrata przynależności do “narodu politycznego” (szlachty) spowodowała, że tożsamość religijną zaczęto wtedy postrzegać jako element spajający wspólnotę. Wzmocniło to trwałość mitu Polaka-katolika.
The text presents the origins of the relationship between Catholicism and national consciousness in Poland at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It discusses the literature on the subject, arguing that the topic has not been sufficiently described and indicating new fields of research. It uses methodology from history, religious studies and book sciences. The findings are based on various sources (fiction, ephemeral religious literature, sermons, book collection inventories, journalism and diaries). Their analysis indicates that the mid-nineteenth century emphasized and deepened in content the durability of the cohesion of Polishness and Catholicness. Despite growing secularization, new meanings were drawn from membership in the Universal Church (J. Ordęga, S. Rawicz). The loss of membership in the "political nation" (gentry) caused religious identity to be perceived as an element binding the community together. This strengthened the durability of the myth of the Catholic Pole.
