Opis:
Nature inspired algorithms are regarded as a powerful tool for solving real life problems. They do not guarantee to find the globally optimal solution, but can find a suboptimal, robust solution with an acceptable computational cost. The paper introduces an approach to the development of collision avoidance algorithms for ships based on the firefly algorithm, classified to the swarm intelligence methods. Such algorithms are inspired by the swarming behaviour of animals, such as e.g. birds, fish, ants, bees, fireflies. The description of the developed algorithm is followed by the presentation of simulation results, which show, that it might be regarded as an efficient method of solving the collision avoidance problem. Such algorithm is intended for use in the Decision Support System or in the Collision Avoidance Module of the Autonomous Navigation System for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships.

Opis:
Path planning plays a vital role in a mobile robot navi‐ gation system. It essentially generates the shortest tra‐ versable path between two given points. There are many path planning algorithms that have been proposed by re‐ searchers all over the world; however, there is very little work focussing on path planning for a service environ‐ ment. The general assumption is that either the environ‐ ment is fully known or unknown. Both cases would not be suitable for a service environment. A fully known en‐ vironment will restrict further expansion in terms of the number of navigation points and an unknown environ‐ ment would give an inefficient path. Unlike other envi‐ ronments, service environments have certain factors to be considered, like user‐friendliness, repeatability, sca‐ lability, and portability, which are very essential for a service robot. In this paper, a simple, efficient, robust, and environment‐independent path planning algorithm for an indoor mobile service robot is presented. Initially, the robot is trained to navigate to all the possible desti‐ nations sequentially with a minimal user interface, which will ensure that the robot knows partial paths in the en‐ vironment. With the trained data, the path planning al‐ gorithm maps all the logical paths between all the des‐ tinations, which helps in autonomous navigation. The al‐ gorithm is implemented and tested using a 2D simulator Player/Stage. The proposed system is tested with two dif‐ ferent service environment layouts and proved to have features like scalability, trainability, accuracy, and repe‐ atability. The algorithm is compared with various classi‐ cal path planning algorithms and the results show that the proposed path planning algorithm is on par with the other algorithms in terms of accuracy and efficient path generation.

Opis:
Over the years, many publications have been published on planning ship’s passage through the NSR and input and output data modeling. Results were not considered in terms of errors of modeled output data. Basic research for the years 2008 - 2020 was carried out in the study on opening and closing dates of ice-free transit corridor on the NSR and probable number of tariff zones where paid assistance of icebreakers would be required. Mathematical relationships of average values and probable errors of navigational, ecological and economic ship voyage performance were developed. For this purpose, partial derivatives of functions were used. The outcomes of the study have shown that changes of total average cost of vessel’s transit voyage depends mostly on number of tariff zones where assistance of icebreakers is required. But navigation with icebreakers assistance ensures smaller standard deviation of total voyage time and thus more precise scheduling of ship's voyage timetable through the NSR. The higher probability of meeting requirements set by decision-maker when planning a long-term voyage of ship, the shorter time window for meeting these requirements. Outside the favorable time window, the navigational, ecological and economic results of voyage deteriorate very quickly.

Navigational safety necessitates careful route monitoring, which includes staying on the planned course. For a ship to achieve effective route monitoring while changing course, a wheel over point (WOP) must be precisely calculated and marked on a charted course. The reason is to warn the watchkeeping officer that the ship must make a course alteration to prevent overshooting the intended route. One of the techniques for appraising the WOP is the advance transfer technique (ATT). During a practical review by means of an electronic and paper chart work exercise of the ATT, this study discovered two research gaps related to the technique. Following that, this study created an improved advance transfer mathematical model (ATMM) by restructuring the use of the ship’s turning circle to overcome the limitations discovered. To validate the improvement of the ATMM over the ATT, data were collected by evaluating both methods using a ship simulator and performing a manoeuvring analysis. The data, specifically the reduction in the cross-track distance (XTD), was validated in three verification stages: compliance with XTL, percentage change, and Mann‒Whitney U test using IBM SPSS. In comparison to the ATT, the ATMM produces better results in terms of the course-keeping capability and it can be implemented as an algorithm in an integrated bridge navigation system for autonomous ship navigation safety.

In this work we explore the use of differentiable programming to allow autonomous movement planning of a small vessel. We aim for an end to end architecture where the machine learning algorithm directly controls engine power and rudder movements of a simulated vessel to reach a defined goal. Differentiable programming is a novel machine learning paradigm, that allows to define a systems parameterized response to control commands in imperative computer code and to use automatic differentiation and analysis of the information flow from the controlling inputs and parameters to the resulting trajectory to compute derivatives to be used as search directions in an iterative algorithm to optimize a goal function. Initially the method does not know about any manoeuvring or the vessels response to control commands. The method autonomously learns the vessels behaviour from several simulation runs. Finally, we will show how the simulated vessel is able to fulfil some small missions, like crossing a flowing river while avoiding crossing traffic.

Opis:
In the area of mobile robotics, trajectory planning is the task to find a sequence of primitive trajectories that connect two configurations, whereas non-holonomic constraints, obstacles and driving costs have to be considered. In this paper, we present an approach that is able to handle situations that require changes of driving directions. In such situations, optimal trajectory sequences contain costly turning maneuvers – sometimes not even on the direct path between start and target. These situations are difficult for most optimization approaches as the robot partly has to drive paths with higher cost values that seem to be disadvantageous. We discuss the problem in depth and provide a solution that is based on maneuvers, partial backdriving and free-place discovery. We applied the approach on top of our Viterbi-based trajectory planner.

Opis:
The paper presents the impact of the weather on inland navigation conditions. Each mode of transportation depends on the weather, but inland navigation is the one most affected by it. Inland navigation is strongly dependent on the water level in a river bed, which is a result of weather conditions. In Poland the depth of inland waterways is relatively low, but the biggest consideration is the weather which results in the variability of this level. The variability of hydrotechnical conditions results in problems with planning for transportation. It is widely known that water is one of the most important factors in the hydrotechnical conditions of inland navigation and it is directly correlated with the weather. In this paper the authors present the impact of temperature on the duration of the navigation season on the Border Oder, based on research conducted in the years from 2004 to 2018 and the authors also investigated important changes in the weather conditions during last few years. The results showed that the number of navigable days has dropped significantly over the investigated period as a result of changes in the climate.

Opis:
The article is strongly related to the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) project. The project’s objective is the improvement of air transport above Europe 0. Since Air Traffic Management (ATM) is involved to obtain more effective approach to air traffic flow managing activities, the concept of Flexible Use Airspace (FUA) has arisen in result. ATM is a quite developed aviation’s subdomain, therefore currently existing airspace state has been described briefly in the article, referring to the presented solution concept. The notion of Free Route Airspace (FRA) airspace model defined in this article relies on mathematical description. The selected approach clarifies airspace as a set of squares or cubes that have volumes with appointed values due to certain conditions in the considered time (i.e. traffic flow or weather). The model has to ensure facilitation of flight route planning and warrant aircrafts separation towards flight safety assurance. The concept assumes that this airspace model will provide assistance for airspace user to select essential flight plan criteria, such as economy, time, etc. The path will be appointed according to personal preferences, based on the model from which further elaborated algorithm will evaluate situation. The presented solution is a response to air traffic growth. Therefore it supports the SESAR project through research and development activities. The description proves that airspace model would create enhancement in flight planning for airspace users.
Artykuł przedstawia koncepcję zamodelowanej przestrzeni powietrznej w sposób umożliwiający automatyczne planowanie lotu w Przestrzeni Lotów Swobodnych (Free Route Airspace – FRA). Zaprezentowany model usprawnia czynności składania planu lotu przez użytkownika, jednocześnie gwarantując bezpieczną separację statków powietrznych. Tematyka artykułu jest związana z badaniami do projektu Jednolitej Europejskiej Przestrzeni Powietrznej (Single European ATM Research – SESAR), której podstawowe założenie stanowi poprawa efektywności i bezpieczeństwa operacji w transporcie lotniczym.

Opis:
Vessels designed for navigation in ice can perform voyage with the assistance of icebreaker in the navigation season in case an ice cover area is less than 20%. Whereas the same vessels could carry out successfully completed voyage through the NSR with intensive icebreaker help at the ice-covered area lower than 42%. Navigation of the same vessel at ice covered area above 80% is possible with intensive icebreaker help, but it threatens to damage the hull, rudder or propeller. Excessive generalization of data analyzed may cause to wrong, even opposite conclusions. Using only basic statistical information in the form of average values and standard deviation may be not sufficient for the purpose of vessel’s voyage planning in areas covered with ice. Much more opportunities for the assessment of navigation in ice covered regions provides cumulative distribution, which should be related to the time and geographical space distribution. It allows to determine the duration of time window for given area covered with ice in a particular region and predetermined probability of its occurrence. It is thus possible to plan approximate date of departure and duration of voyage for assumed safety criteria. Also, it is possible to plan a number of consecutive voyages in a navigation season. Mathematical approach to voyage planning in ice based on a cumulative distribution is presented in the paper. It allows creation of an advisory computer application to support decision-making by the commander of a vessel. It will reduce the human factor in data processing and reduce possibility of making a mistake. By this way, can be enhanced the safety of maritime transport. Novell approach is verified on the example of historical data about the German Navy ship activity during the Second World War.
Rozkład skumulowany pozwala określić czas trwania okienka czasowego występowania określonych warunków żeglugi lodowej statków dla określonej powierzchni pokrycia danego regionu lodem i założonego prawdopodobieństwa o wystąpienia takich warunków. Zmniejszy to udział czynnika ludzkiego w przetwarzaniu danych i ograniczy możliwość popełnienia błędu. W ten sposób będzie można zwiększyć bezpieczeństwo transportu morskiego.

The growing need of ocean surveying and exploration for scientific and industrial application has led to the requirement of routing strategies for ocean vehicles which are optimal in nature. Most of the op-timal path planning for marine vehicles had been conducted offline in a self-made environment. This paper takes into account a practical marine environment, i.e. Portsmouth Harbour, for finding an optimal path in terms of computational time between source and end points on a real time map for an USV. The current study makes use of a grid map generated from original and uses a Dijkstra algorithm to find the shortest path for a single USV. In order to benchmark the study, a path planning study using a well-known local path planning method artificial path planning (APF) has been conducted in a real time marine environment and effectiveness is measured in terms of path length and computational time.

One of the algorithms for route determination serving to avoid obstructions is the method of artificial potential fields, used for determining routes of mobile robots. The method is used in maritime transport, for instance for detecting anomalies in ship movement. The article presents the method of potential fields used for solving the problem of route selection avoiding navigational dangers and obstacles. This article presents an algorithm of route determination based on the said method, its implementation in the MATLAB program and examples of application for the ship’s safe trajectory determination in some navigational situations.

Searching for the shortest-path in an unknown or changeable environment is a common problem in robotics and video games, in which agents need to update maps and to perform re-planning in order to complete their missions. D* Lite is a popular incremental heuristic search algorithm (i.e., it utilizes knowledge from previous searches). Its efficiency lies in the fact that it re-expands only those parts of the search-space that are relevant to registered changes and the current state of the agent. In this paper, we propose a new D* Extra Lite algorithm that is close to a regular A*, with reinitialization of the affected search-space achieved by search-tree branch cutting. The provided worst-case complexity analysis strongly suggests that D* Extra Lite’s method of reinitialization is faster than the focused approach to reinitialization used in D* Lite. In comprehensive tests on a large number of typical two-dimensional path-planning problems, D* Extra Lite was 1.08 to 1.94 times faster than the optimized version of D* Lite. Moreover, while demonstrating that it can be particularly suitable for difficult, dynamic problems, as the problem-complexity increased, D* Extra Lite’s performance further surpassed that of D*Lite. The source code of the algorithm is available on the open-source basis.

This article aims to depict the fundamentals of passage planning and route management for an autonomous vessels (AV). It presents a derivation of such a voyage passage plan, its step-by-step analysis, and a comparison to its conventional equivalent.
