The questions of sport instrumentalization and use of sport events for PR purposes that are raised in this article have been discussed for many years. In recent decades however one may observe the intensified competition and efforts of states to obtain the rights to organize sport events, especially the Olympics, FIFA World Cup or UEFA European Championship. As in such events the media interest all over the world has been enormous, event hosting country gains a unique chance to promote and strengthen its image. The PR strategies realized by Poland during the organization of EURO 2012, analyzed in this article, are an example of such actions.

According to the Joseph S. Ney’s soft power concept, in the audiovisual era grows the significance of the non-material elements of a state’s power and the perception of the state in the international circles based on its image. Governments of numerous countries create specific promotional strategies within which different types of communication tools are applied, including the Public Relations tools with a special emphasis of the media relations and event marketing and also the Nation Branding and Public Diplomacy. The tasks of the government is then first of all to establish a relevant direction of proceedings and then to coordinate the activities of all of the entities which participate in the implementation of the country’s promotional strategy

Branding Greenland
Opis:
Branding Greenland as a form of expression of national identity? In the times of globalisation there is a tendency for countries to differentiate from others. More and more governments decide to launch professional nation branding campaigns in order to communicate to a broad public what a particular country has to offer as well as what values and images it wants to be associated with. Greenland is an example of a country that after a long period of colonisation and establishing self-government, in 2009 began to redefine its identity and reveal it to the world. A branding campaign has been implemented to communicate a newly defined image of Greenland. This campaign has been carried out using mainly social media and the tools that the Internet has to offer. The aim of this paper is to explore the concept of nation branding and to define the relation between nation branding and national identity. The purpose is also to analyse what images of Greenland as a brand are presented by “Pioneering nation” campaign.

Artykuł stanowi krytyczny przegląd podejść teoretycznych do fenomenu brandingu narodowego.
The article gives a critical overview of theoretical approaches to the phenomenon of nation branding. It begins with an explanation of the core idea and main assumptions, which nation branding is based on, combined with a trial of giving an answer to a question of reasons of its current popularity. After that, it presents dominant theoretical approaches to nation branding and discusses the most significant definitions. The prime goal of the article is to prove whether we can speak of one, coherent, generally accepted concept of nation branding or not. The author of the article concludes that we rather have to deal with many different concepts, which are connected by common elements.

This study focuses on the effect that internationalization of higher education has on the nation branding of South Korea. To better understand the role that international students in higher education play in nation branding, research is needed on the actual experiences of international students in the country. In this study, current and former African university students’ experiences living and studying in South Korea are investigated. This study, therefore, uses the nation branding framework within the context of South Korea and the role of higher education as an image enhancement strategy geared toward global public inclusion; its focus is on the experiences of African students. In order to obtain multiple perspectives on African student experiences, a survey was conducted using a questionnaire. The empirical evidence obtained in this study demonstrates that African students’ experiences in South Korea are relevant in their perceptions of the host country. The results suggest the positive impact that the South Korean government has on improving the country’s image through encouragement of internationalization of higher education, especially among African students who come to the country for their tertiary education.

Opis:
The paper analyses the nation branding as an umbrella concept applied by the Polish cultural diplomacy for the promotion of a positive image of Poland in the world since 2008. The analysis takes the form of a case study of a Project Asia, a new, long-term project aiming to promote brand Polska through high and non-commercial culture in East and South Asia. Since 2010 the project has been executed by Adam Mickiewicz Institute in cooperation with Polish diplomatic missions, Polish Institutes and other Polish institutions engaged in promotion of the Polish culture abroad. Establishing the presence of Polish contemporary culture in East and South Asia has become a significant challenge because of circumstances and contexts much different from those in which IAM used to develop consistent cultural narratives about contemporary Poland. The paper analyses the main institutional and cultural determinants of the project development, the dynamics of its implementation and its adjustment to the cultural realities of Asian countries.

An important standpoint in national branding discourse is to draw attention to the fact that the international public, as well as each individual member, has certain associations connected with the countries, its inhabitants and national products. Connotations received over the years, which are strongly related to the upbringing in social groups, give us the opportunity to establish order, hierarchy, categorization and thus easier understanding of the world. The subjective interpretation of the mentioned factors and many others defined by Simon Anholt as “one million of private convictions” create country image which can be managed by the implementation of nation branding strategy.

The 2010 Dodd-Frank Act
Opis:
The DR Congo is one of the African countries rich in minerals ranged from amblygonite to Zinc. However, only three African countries namely Botswana, Namibia and South Africa are known as mineral-dependent economies which do not suffer from “the curse of minerals”. In 2006 Atalli predicted the collapse of the DR Congo owing to various reasons including large scale corruption in the coltan supply chain. Thus, the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act requiring any company that might be using conflict minerals to register with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and then disclose its supply chain was introduced. As such, the Act curbed the fate of the “curse of minerals in the DR Congo”. However, the problem is that president Trump’s executive order to review the Dodd-Frank Act in effort to allow US companies to profit from armed-conflicts minerals threatens existing due diligence framework in coltan supply chain. That review has the potentials to fuel armed-conflicts, creates opportunism, erode relational norms, trust; thus undermines the country’s 2020 nation branding vision as emerging business destination. The study objective is to evaluate the impact of Trump’s Dodd-Frank Act revision in the coltan supply chain in the DR Congo and the country’s 2020 nation banding vision. The study focused only on the implications of Trump’s threats in coltan supply chain in the DR Congo; thus alternatively excludes other type of minerals. Hence, it contributes to the body of knowledge by providing new insights into nation branding theory and Congolese coltan supply. The study adopted a case study approach which was grounded in the theoretical framework of nation branding. The nature of study dictated qualitative and quantitative methodologies combined. Survey questionnaire and focus group techniques were used. The sample size N=74 respondents from coltan buying organisations was used. Non-probability purposive sampling method was employed.

China is a country that has been using sport in order to reach political goals for many years. Lately such political exploitation of sport is directed at shaping the desirable international image of this country. Diverse from the Erasmus program, amongst other EU international interactions, Humanitarian and Developmental initiatives resulting in Nation Branding is a field that is hardly explored. This paper has tried to analyze the concept of supra-nation branding through the EU humanitarian and development program named EU Aid Volunteers Initiative, through focusing on how a supranational organization such as the EU would go about a nation branding initiative that promotes its collective values in Humanitarian and Development Aid. In order to explore the concept of supra-nation branding, it firsts gives a brief introduction about the initiative and identifies the key elements of EU nation branding as well as its humanitarian and development initiatives. Then, it analyzes it through Anholt’s lens and a SWOT analysis, followed by critiques and a conclusion. This analysis proved fruitful in terms of enabling a structural understanding behind the processes employed by the E.U Aid Volunteers Initiative and how it shall enable the E.U to advance its image as a supra-national entity both locally, regionally and internationally. In addition, as the European Union is an entity unlike any other it generates comprehension for future organizations motivated by a collectivity in idealisms and cultural identities, enabling the application of their country’s image abroad through a means of which embodies a form of cultural-humanitarian diplomacy.

Opis:
The article aims to explain the relationships between the official historical narrative (politics of memory) and the image of the state on the international area (nation branding). The analysis was based mainly on the Kazakh cinematography and the Kazakh TV station programs. I argue that the official historical narrative may contribute to the change of Kazakhstan perception on the international area. Politics of memory aims at highlighting the selected historical periods and concealing others. Kazakhstan elites are trying to emphasize the recent history, modernization and economic successes of the state after 1991. The pre-Soviet history is also strongly accentuated, and the historical continuity of the Kazakh nation (or even its statehood) from the end of the 15th century is highlighted. The politics of memory also aims at retraditionalization, i.e., the traditional lifestyle of nomads is widely publicized. On the other hand, the period of Russian and Soviet rule, painful events in the history of the twentieth century, are omitted or even concealed. Such a manner of conducting politics of memory may change the image of Kazakhstan, from the post–Soviet state to a modern one, modernized but at the same time nomadic, with a rich tradition.
