Opis:
We present a model for predicting inflected word forms based on morphological analogies. Previous work includes rule-based algorithms that determine and copy affixes from one word to another, with limited support for varying inflectional patterns. In related tasks such as morphological reinflection, the algorithm is provided with an explicit enumeration of morphological features which may not be available in all cases. In contrast, our model is feature-free: instead of explicitly representing morphological features, the model is given a demo pair that implicitly specifies a morphological relation (such as write: writes specifying infinitive:present). Given this demo relation and a query word (e.g. watch), the model predicts the target word (e.g. watches). To address this task, we devise a character-based recurrent neural network architecture using three separate encoders and one decoder. Our experimental evaluation on five different languages shows that the exact form can be predicted with high accuracy, consistently beating the baseline methods. Particularly, for English the prediction accuracy is 94.85%. The solution is not limited to copying affixes from the demo relation, but generalizes to words with varying inflectional patterns, and can abstract away from the orthographic level to the level of morphological forms.

Opis:
An important paper describing the Standards of the Polish Ultrasound Society regarding the assessment of portal and hepatic vasculature was published in the Journal of Ultrasonography. Due to the multiplicity of morphological and hemodynamic data required, the time needed to obtain these data and the legal responsibility of doctors for the results, there seems to be a need to determine a clear range of the assessed parameters depending on the reference level of a given healthcare facility. Therefore, the aim of the paper was to present the EFSUMB recommendations on the range of the evaluated ultrasonographic parameters in portal hypertension depending on the reference level. European healthcare institutions are characterized by a clear three-level reference network. Due to the lack of a similar division in Poland, we propose our own classification of the competence of medical entities. The first reference level: ultrasound assessments in a primary health care setting (performed by GPs, emergency physicians, non-specialist private practice physicians, non-specialist practice physicians); at least one mid-class ultrasound scanner with pulsed and color Doppler options, equipped with convex 3–5 MHz and linear 7–12 MHz transducers should be available at physician’s disposal. The second reference level: ultrasound assessments in the hospital setting and specialist outpatient clinics, performed by specialist private practice physicians, radiologists, gastroenterologists and hepatologists; top class (premium) digital ultrasound scanner should be available at physician’s disposal. Third reference level: ultrasound assessments performed in gastroenterology, hepatology and liver surgery departments as well as their specialist outpatient clinics; physicians should use top class digital ultrasound equipment. At every reference level, physicians performing abdominal ultrasound should have the appropriate certification to perform such an assessment or specialize in gastrointestinal diagnosis.
W „Journal of Ultrasonography” została opublikowana ważna praca opisująca standardy badań ultrasonograficznych Polskiego Towarzystwa Ultrasonograficznego dotyczące oceny układu wrotnego i naczyń wątroby. Celem pracy jest więc zaprezentowanie rekomendacji Europejskiej Federacji Towarzystw Ultrasonografii w Medycynie i Biologii określających zakres badanych parametrów ultrasonograficznych dotyczących nadciśnienia wrotnego w odniesieniu do referencyjności ośrodka. One of the main fields of studies within the framework of second language teaching methodology is an analysis of linguistic errors which constitute characteristic phenomenon of different stages throughout the teaching process. Although an error is a systematic deviation from the linguistic norm, it also seems to be an essential step in the second language acquisition. The main aim of this article is to present and analyse the most frequent errors occurring in essays written by Polish students. The analysis concentrates on morphosyntacic errors, since morphosyntax can be considered an area in which the greatest difficulties are to be noticed. The author describes and analyses errors in two problematic areas, namely in the use of articles and past tenses.

Opis:
Research on cross-linguistic differences in morphological paradigms reveals a wide range of variation on many dimensions, including the number of categories expressed, the number of unique forms, and the number of inflectional classes. However, in an influential paper, Ackerman and Malouf (2013) argue that there is one dimension on which languages do not differ widely: in predictive structure. Predictive structure in a paradigm describes the extent to which forms predict each other, called i-complexity. Ackerman and Malouf (2013) show that although languages differ according to measure of surface paradigm complexity, called e-complexity, they tend to have low i-complexity. They conclude that morphological paradigms have evolved under a pressure for low i-complexity. Here, we evaluate the hypothesis that language learners are more sensitive to i-complexity than e-complexity by testing how well paradigms which differ on only these dimensions are learned. This could result in the typological findings Ackerman and Malouf (2013) report if even paradigms with very high e-complexity are relatively easy to learn, so long as they have low i-complexity. First, we summarize a recent work by Johnson et al. (2020) suggesting that both neural networks and human learners may actually be more sensitive to e-complexity than i-complexity. Then we build on this work, reporting a series of experiments which confirm that, indeed, across a range of paradigms that vary in either e- or icomplexity, neural networks (LSTMs) are sensitive to both, but show a larger effect of e-complexity (and other measures associated with size and diversity of forms). In human learners, we fail to find any effect of i-complexity on learning at all. Finally, we analyse a large number of randomly generated paradigms and show that e- and i-complexity are negatively correlated: paradigms with high e-complexity necessarily show low i-complexity. We discuss what these findings might mean for Ackerman and Malouf’s hypothesis, as well as the role of ease of learning versus generalization to novel forms in the evolution of paradigms.

Hypsometric and bathymetric measurements of the Polish coastal zone, which were carried out since the early 50 ties of the last century, provided a very large amount of empirical material. Standardisation of profile recordings in the Coastal·Zone Databank provided a basis for the determination of the multi-temporal changes of the coast. Comparative analysis of coastal zone profiles is of basic importance in planning coastal protection and in designing coastal defence methods. For this aim morphological elements of the shore (beach and dune) and the nearshore (from waterline seawards) zones were separated, and measurements were made on profiles drawn in identical scale. In the present paper, methods of separating morphological elements and the scope of morphometric measurements on cross-shore profiles are presented. The next parts shall discuss: the methods of analysing morphometric parameters (part II), the methods of determining the erosion/accretion systems (part III), and the use of morphometric analysis in the protection of selected regions of the Polish coast (part IV).

The paper deals with the morphological and lexicosemantic characteristics of lexical units golovnaya bol', migren', tsefalgiya and headache, migraine, cephalgia. The research focuses on collocations, word combinations and concordances in which they appear. At the same time, we consider their grammatical relations, semantic restrictions and semantic prosody. The whole linguistic material is investigated in the framework of the text corpora Russian Web 2011 (ruTenTen11) and English Web 2015 (enTenTen15) with the help of the search tool Sketch Engine. To begin the research, the frequencies of these lexical units in individual styles are elaborated and we also look into the etymology of the studied words as these two factors influence their behaviour from the morphological and lexicological perspectives.

Therefore, this paper aims to characterise units such as szacun, szacuneczek, uszanowanko as well as poszan and poszanowanko in terms of grammar and semantics. They are formally analysed by describing their structure and their semantic interpretation is made based on an overview of the material excerpted using Mocno PL, a corpus search engine, and Google, a web search engine. The analyses lead to the conclusion that the examined derivatives are stylistic synonyms of the noun szacunek in certain contexts only. In a majority of cases, they express approval, while in some contexts they function also as formulas opening or closing a statement or an utterance.

Metallic material fell over a wide area around Morasko, as is unambiguously shown by the large number of iron lumps of different size, with characteristic Widmanstetten structures and troilite inclusions. Apart from meteorites, metallic micrometeorites and magnetic spherules are also present. An explosive impact dated as around 5 000 years ago not only delivered material, but also led to the formation of meteorite craters. The time of fall is proved by palynological, radiometric and luminescence methods. It seems likely that a second fall of metallic meteorites occurred at Morasko about 2 000 years ago, though without geomorphological effects. The presence of extraterrestrial magnetic material, in combination with the geological and geomorphological effects of its fall, make the Morasko area a highly interesting and important natural sit. Only less than 20 documented sites worldwide where such a complex record exists.

This study examines the potential effect of morphological awareness on Jordanian EFL tenth-grade students' reading comprehension. Two intact sections of 73 Jordanian tenth-grade students were purposefully selected from a secondary school in Ramtha Directorate of Education (Ramtha, Jordan) during the first semester of the academic year 2017/2018. The experimental group (n=37) was taught using a morphological awareness-based protocol whereas the control group (n= 36) was taught conventionally per the guidelines of the Ministry-prescribed Teacher Book of Action Pack 10. For data collection, a reading comprehension pre/post- test was used. The findings reveal a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group students’ reading comprehension which may be attributed to morphological awareness-based instruction.

Currently two morphological species of the genus Fomes (Polyporaceae, Basidiomycota) are known: F. fomentarius (L.) Fr. and F. fasciatus (Sw.) Cooke. Both species are very important in the decomposition of wood and in the nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Moreover, F. fomentariusis also known as a source of medicinal and nutraceutical products. Recently the existence of three separate ITS lineages/sublineages among F. fomentarius strains has been clearly established - A1 (the strains isolated from North America), A2 (only from Europe) and B (from Europe and Asia). In this review the current knowledge of the morphological variability of F. fomentarius basidiomata has been summarized in respect of the reliable separation of its lineages/sublineages. Micro- and macrofeatures and geographic variability of the basidiomata have been described. Morphological traits of the F. fomentarius basidiomata can vary due to geographical distribution. These phenotypic differences can be based on the presence of several groups or interactions between the genotype and environment. However, no clear differences between basidiomata, useful for reliable separation of the lineages/sublineages, have been observed so far. A recent description in North American Fomes research articles is based on basidiomata of the A1 sublineage. It is most possible that the descriptions in European literature are based on basidiomata of two other lineages/sublineages and thus we cannot discriminate between them. In the future a detailed study of the macro- and microtraits - pileus and pore surface colors, basidioma size, depth of tube layer, and basidiospore size - is therefore proposed for reliable separation of the lineages/sublineages of F. fomentarius.

A pot experiment was conducted to examine whether the morphological and physiological characteristics of some halophytes may be affected by salt stress. For this purpose, a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design was carried out with three replications. The treatments were some halophytes (Salicornia europaea, Atriplex leucoclada, and Kochia scoparia) and salinity stress levels [Electrical conductivity 0 (Hoagland’s solution), Hoagland’s solution consisting of 100, 200, 300 and 500 mM NaCl]. Among the halophytes tested, Salicornia europaea had significantly higher shoot and root of dry matters compared to the other halophytes in all salt treatments. Salinity stress resulted in an increase in photosynthetic pigments up to 200 mM and thereafter, it decreased in all of the studied plants. Photosynthetic pigments, ranked in a descending order, were high in Kochia scoparia, Salicornia europaea, and Atriplex leucoclada. In addition, salinity stress led to an enhancement in malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2. The tolerance of Salicornia europaea under high salinity stress was associated with low MDA and H2O2 contents as well as high contents of photosynthetic pigments. The shoot and root Na+ increased considerably by augmenting the salinity levels in all halophytic plants; however, there was a significant difference among halophytes at higher salinity levels. The shoot K+ decreased by increasing the salinity levels, but K+ partitioning pattern varied among the halophytes. Under saline conditions, the shoot and root Na+/K+ ratio of all halophytes grew. The highest and the lowest of Na+ were observed in Salicornia europaea and Kochia scoparia, respectively. Thus, the Na+/K+ ratio could be considered as an indicator of salt evaluation. Nitrogen, protein content, dry matter digestibility (DMD), and metabolizable energy (ME) were high in Salicornia europaea plants in comparison to other plants at 200–500 mM salinity levels; in contrast, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and netural detergent fiber (NDF) were low. According to the results of this study, the tolerance of halophytes towards NaCl is possibly due to the differences in damage from reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially H2O2, and toxicity to metabolism Na+.

Opis:
The reorganization of the initial system of aspect paradigms in Old Russian is investigated within the framework of the theory of natural grammar. It is claimed, in accordance with this theory, that the grammatical changes in morphological systems of natural languages are determined by a limited set of typologically relevant markedness principles (naturalness principles or preference laws). These principles explain the attested diachrony of grammatical changes in the system of aspectual paradigms of the Russian verb and predict the general direction in its development. During the historical development of the system of aspectual paradigms in Russian, optimal iconic perfectivizing paradigms are ousting non-optimal countericonic imperfectivizing paradigms as well as non-optimal non-iconic aspectual syncretic paradigms. In contemporary Russian, aspectual paradigms of perfectivization are preferable in terms of competitive aspectual paradigms of imperfectivization and syncretic aspectual paradigms. The share of optimal paradigms of perfectivization is constantly increasing in modern Russian. Consequently, there is direct evidence for the development of the system of Russian aspect paradigms towards optimal organization of aspect paradigms, i.e. towards economy.

The leaf epidermis of 36 taxa (species, subspecies, varieties and cultivars) of the genus Ficus (subgenera Ficus, Synoecia, Sycomorus, Pharmacosycea and Urostigma) was observed under LM and SEM. Characteristics of the epidermis are of particular taxonomic as well as phylogenetic interest because they differ conspicuously between species. The differences are especially prominent in the size and shape of epidermal cells, the shape of cell walls, peristomatal cuticular rim, the distribution and position of stomata, lithocysts, hydathodes, trichomes, and the types of wax, cuticle and trichomes. Results of this study provided data on new qualitative and quantitative traits of the leaf epidermis in the selected taxa, and confirmed the classification suggested by Berg (1989).
