Opis:
Our studies focus on ore mineralization in a contact-metamorphic aureole, using the Variscan Karkonosze Granite pluton as an example. The Karkonosze in trusion is enveloped by an Early Palaeozoic (about 500 Ma) metamorphic complex of the Izera–Kowary Unit composed of a diverse assemblage of gneisses, granitic gneisses, schists, amphibolites and marbles. The Budniki ore mineralization site was discovered in the early 1950's at the SE margin of the pluton. The uneconomic Ti-ox ide/sil i cate, Fe-Cu-Ni-Co-sulphide-sulphoarsenide, and uranium mineral deposits are hosted within amphibolites which were subjected to regional metamor phism fol lowed by contact meta - morphism. The Ti mineralization includes an ilmenite-titanite assemblage that originated from regional-metamorphic transformation of igneous Ti-bearing minerals, such as ilmenite and tschermakite, of the basic protoliths of amphibolites. During subsequent contact metamorphism, ilmenite was decomposed and, after wards, Al-rich titanite and rutile were formed. The Ti remobilization was coeval with an early stage of superimposed Fe-Cu-Ni-Co-sulphide/sulphoarsenide mineralization (pyrrhotite, pyrite, pentlandite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and Fe-Ni-Co-As-S phases), related to the activity of the Karkonosze Granite hydrothermal system. The ore minerals formed successively within a wide range of temperatures (625–250gradeC).

Opis:
Thermosensitive chitosan hydrogels containing sodium beta-glycerophosphate (ß-GP), whose gelation is induced by increasing temperature to body temperature, were functionalized by incorporation of Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), an enzyme involved in mineralization of bone. ALP incorporation led to acceleration of gelation upon increase of temperature for four different chitosan preparations of differing molecular weight, as demonstrated by rheometric time sweeps at 37°C. Hydrogels containing ALP were subsequently incubated in calcium glycerophosphate (Ca-GP) solution to induce their mineralization with calcium phosphate (CaP) in order to improve their suitability as materials for bone replacement. Incorporated ALP retained its bioactivity and induced formation of CaP mineral, as confirmed by SEM, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, ICP-OES, and increases in dry mass percentage, which rose with increasing ALP concentration and incubation time in Ca-GP solution. The results demonstrate that ALP accelerates formation of thermosensitive chitosan/ß-GP hydrogels and induces their mineralization with CaP, which paves the way for applications as injectable bone replacement materials.

An extracellular substance extracted from the bacterial strain Rhodococcus opacus was used as a template for calcium carbonate precipitation from CaCl2 and Na2CO3 solutions at 25 and 37 °C. Obtained crystals were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Kinetics of precipitation was investigated by conductivity measurements. The obtained results show that the used biopolymer does not affect the crystal structure but acts as a nucleation centers leading to the formation of calcite crystals with the regular size. This effect is concentration dependent i.e. the EPS concentration increase causes the crystal size decreases, and is greater if calcium chloride solution if mixed with EPS 15 min before the addition of sodium carbonate solution. The temperature increase strengthens this effect.

Opis:
In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels designed for osteochondral regeneration were mineralized with calcium phosphate (CaP) and magnesium phosphate (MgP) by incorporation of the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and incubation in solutions of 0.1 M calcium or magnesium glycerophosphate (CaGP, MgGP). Hydrogels incubated in water served as controls. Dry mass percentage, i.e. the percentage consisting of polymer and mineral and not water, was markedly higher for samples incubated in CaGP and MgGP and decreased in the order: CaGP>MgGP>water. CaP and MgP formation was confirmed by FTIR. SEM revealed spherical deposits characteristic for apatite in samples incubated in CaGP and plate-like crystals of the magnesium phosphate bobierrite in samples incubated in MgGP, while samples incubated in water were devoid of deposits. Rheometric testing showed that storage modulus of hydrogels incubated in CaGP and MgGP was markedly higher and decreased in the order: CaGP>MgGP>water. The results prove the principle of enzymatic mineralization of PVA with CaP and MgP to improve their suitability for bone regeneration applications.

Wyróżniono pierwotne centra krystalizacji i centra wtórne. Scharakteryzowano tworzacą się biomineralizację i omówiono jej skutki.
Biomineralization of tissues includes both mineralization processes that are necessary for the functioning of the organism and those that are harmful for it. This article discusses both types of mineralization, with particular focus on the occurrence of the so-called crystallization centers, i.e. places where the mineralization begins. Primary and secondary crystallization centers are distinguished. Characteristics of developing biomineralization and its consequences are discussed.

In absence and presence of modifiers, mixing of the reagents led to the formation of calcite crystals. The calcium carbonate obtained with poly(ethylene glycol) and block copolymers was characterized by smaller diameter in comparison with the one without modifiers. It was observed that using compounds with different molecular weights has no obvious effect on the form and properties of precipitated calcium carbonate particles.

The aim of this work was to study mineralization and degradation behavior of poly(ε-caprolactone) membranes modified with hydroxyapatite. The membranes have been obtained by electrospinning method. In vitro mineralization and degradation processes were carried out in simulated body fluid (SBF) as the release medium. The weight loss of the samples, water uptakes, pH and calcium, potassium, sodium ions concentrations of the solutions were determined. The chemistry and microstructure of the membranes after different times of incubation in SBF were characterized using SEM, FTIR, and XRD methods. The results of in vitro study in SBF indicate that incorporation of n-HAp strongly activates precipitation of the apatite like materials on the surface of nanofibers.

Opis:
Polysaccharide hydrogels are widely used in food industry and medicine. Gellan gum (GG) recently gained a lot of attention as a promising material for tissue regeneration proposes due to its excellent biocompatibility and similarity to natural extracellular matrix. However, in unmineralized form it is not suitable for bone tissue engineering because of weak mechanical properties. Enzymatic mineralization (e.g. using alkaline phosphatase – ALP) is one of the methods of calcifying of hydrogels and it resembles natural processes occurring during bone healing. The aim of this research was to investigate mineralization of hydrogels and to improve properties of gellan gum scaffolds by adjusting processing conditions. Since ALP does not form with GG covalent bonds, during incubation in mineralization medium (solution of calcium glycerophosphate - CaGP) it is diffusing from the samples. Therefore, mineralization effectiveness depends on the interplay between incoming CaGP and outgoing ALP molecules. We hypothesize that better CaGP availability, especially in the first hours of incubation, can result in more effective and homogenous precipitation of calcium phosphates (CaP) in GG samples. To this end, samples with different GG and ALP concentration were subjected to two different mineralization regimes (more and less frequent CaGP exchanges). We proved that better CaGP availability (more frequent CaGP exchange) resulted in better mechanical properties (Young’s modulus) and more effective mineral formation (higher dry mass percentage) of the samples compared to the same samples mineralized with lower accessibility of CaGP. This may be related to the fact, that in presence of fresh organic substrates, more CaP are formed in the outer parts of the samples at the beginning of the process, that limit ALP diffusion and allow more uniform mineralization.

The purpose of this research was to determine: 1) phosphate bacteria (PB) mechanisms responsible for enhancing the soil’s soluble phosphorus (P), using the processes of inorganic P solubilisation, organic P mineralization, and blocking of soil colloidal adsorption site, and 2) to investigate the factors contributing to this increase. Phosphate bacteria (PB) was inoculated into sterile Andisols in three separate compositions, termed 1 kg P∙kg–1 (2.82 g phosphate rock, 0.5 g Ca3(PO4)2, 0.4 g Al3(PO4)2, or 0.4 g Fe3(PO4)2), organic P (0.5 cm3 para-Nitrophenylphosphate (pNPP) or 0.5 g Na-phytate), and 1 kg P (KH2PO4)∙kg–1, in order to analyse inorganic P solubilisation, organic P mineralization, and evaluate blocking soil colloidal site for adsorption P, respectively. Furthermore, spectrophotometry technique was applied to determine the amount of dissolved P. The PB showed an improvement in inorganic P solubilisation from 147.66 to 194.61 mg P∙kg–1, and also in organic P from 63.6 to 91.7 mg P∙kg–1, compared to control, (31.06 mg P∙kg–1) and (23.7 mg P∙kg–1), respectively. Meanwhile, the micro-organisms were known to decrease P adsorption by 13.43%, beyond the restraint set at 85.34%. Therefore, increased soluble P in Andisols is possibly expressed, using the equation as follows: soluble P (mg P∙kg–1) = 1201.96 + 1.18 inorganic P solubilisation (mg P∙kg–1) + 1.09 organic P mineralization (mg P∙kg–1) – 0.92 adsorption P (mg P∙kg–1) (R2 = 0.99).

Opis:
Primary ore mineralization in the abandoned Boguszów baryte-polymetallic deposit, located in the Intra-Sudetic Depression, was studied by reflected light microscopy and electron microprobe. Ore minerals, occurring as veinlets, irregular aggregates and lenses in baryte veins are hosted by the Upper Carboniferous Chełmiec rhyodacite laccolith. They are dominated by galena, sphalerite (with Cd up to 0.04 apfu) and tetrahedrite group minerals (TGM). Four generations of the TGM were distinguished accordl ng to textural features and Ag content: (1) low-Ag tetrahedrite-(Zn) (Ag: 0.22-0.6 apfu), (2) Ag-enriched tetrahedrite-(Zn) and Ag-enriched tetrahedrite-(Fe) (Ag: 0.71-1.45 apfu), (3) members of the freibergite series: “freibergite-(Fe)” and “freibergite-(Zn)” (Ag: 3.21-3.48 apfu; Hg: up to 0.75 apfu), (4) member of the “freibergite-(Fe)” series (Ag: 5.32-5.78 apfu). Several elongated inclusions of Ag-bearing sulphosalts within galena crystals were observed (members of the series “freibergite-(Fe)” and “freibergite-(Zn)”, pyrargyrite and polybasite). These polymetallic silver-bearing ores were mined in Boguszów from the 15th to the 19th century. Additionally, small grains of cobalt-enriched löllingite and gersdorffite were observed, which were formed from fluids sourced from the ultramafic basement. The textural characteristics of the ore, the mineral paragenesis and the chemical composition of individual ore minerals indicate low-temperature crystallization conditions.
