The purpose of this essay is to analyze the metaphor of the “defect of a declaration of will” in the legal language. The secondary goal is to note that a reflection on the metaphor is a CONTAINER image schema. Simultaneously, the metaphor of the “defect of a declaration of will” is in fact a dead metaphor. This essay is also focused upon an analysis of a function fulfilled by the metaphor in normative acts, judicial decisions, and legal doctrine.

Metaphor can manifest itself in a variety of form including the visual one, which can be an extremely expressive means of communication. That is why visual metaphors are widely used by marketers and advertisers thus becoming a topical object of linguistic research programmes. The study of visual metaphor is tightly related to the study of conceptual metaphor as the target message delivered by a picture is derived from a certain source field that is employed for metaphorical representation. Another type of metaphor commonly used in visual representation is a multimodal metaphor. The present research dwells upon the study of metaphor use in animal rights protection advertisements. The hypothesis of the study is that visual metaphors present strong content that can activate emotions and contribute to the marketers’ desire to influence the audience.

This article describes a study of 33 Polish political browser games, which are left of the set of 51 applications developed by Polish Internet users from 2005 to 2020. These considerations concern mainly the metaphorical messages conveyed in these games, in particular which features make browser games metaphorical messages, and what game structure is necessary to convey such messages. Differentiation of these game types is equally important. Owing to it, they can participate in expressive and explanatory communication.

Opis:
Metaphors of Dawn in Lithuanian and Russian Poetry This article analyzes the realizations of certain basic metaphors of dawn/sunset in the works of twentieth-century Lithuanian and Russian poets. The first part of the article examines important discrepancies between biomorphic, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic metaphors, as well as mythological metaphors. In Lithuanian poetry, dawn/sunset is associated with different objects compared to Russian poetry (wild strawberries and cherry, birds, fish and snakes in Lithuanian poetry; cranberries, melons and apples, birds and animals in Russian poetry). There is a lack of anthropomorphic metaphors for girl or woman in Lithuanian poetry. The associations of dawn/sunset with mythic entities are also entirely different. In the realization of the metaphor of DAWN/SUNSET – JEWELS, DAWN/SUNSET – FABRIC/ITEM MADE of FABRIC, DAWN/SUNSET – METAL/ITEM MADE of METAL, both similarities and significant differences are registered. The second part of the article examines more closely the similarities between the realizations of three basic metaphors, in which the dawn/sunset is interpreted as: 1) fire or blaze; 2) a burning object; 3) liquid. The analyses embraces about 200 poetry texts excerpts: 95 excerpts from the poetry works by 28 Lithuanian authors and 105 excerpts from the works by 30 Russian authors. In both languages, the metaphoric expressions of the first group highlight the bright colors of dawn/sunset; intensity; impression of a burning object. The metaphorization of the dark hues of dawn is specific to the Russian poetry. Semantically close to this group are metaphors of the DAWN/SUNSET – BURNING OBJECT. Dawn/sunset is interpreted as fire, bonfire, holy fire, burning coals, a lantern or torch. The image of the sacrificial fire is more widespread in the Russian poetry than in Lithuanian. In both poetic systems, folkloric images are used to develop the basic metaphor. The realization of the common metaphor DAWN/SUNSET – LIQUID as DAWN/SUNSET – BLOOD is associated with the metaphor SUNSET – DEATH in the Lithuanian poetry, while in Russian poetry – with the metaphor SUNSET – WOUND. The metaphor DAWN/SUNSET – TEAR is equally rare. In the metaphor DAWN – WATER/WATER RESERVOIR, the overlap of the images and relation to the more general metaphor LIGHT – WATER is evident in the both groups. In the group DAWN/SUNSET – CHEMICAL LIQUID. The image of paint (including cosmetics) is widely used in the both poetical systems. In the latter group, one can notice the overlap of the metaphor DAWN – WINE. It is specific to the Russian metaphoric system the use of pickle, cod-liver oil images. The Lithuanian and Russian poetic systems are characterized by both specific and common metaphors of dawn and dusk. These metaphors reveal some differences in the frequency of using various models, as well as in their particular content. Metafory świtu w poezji litewskiej i rosyjskiej Artykuł analizuje realizację pewnych zasadniczych metafor świtu/zmierzchu w utworach dwudziestowiecznych poetów litewskich i rosyjskich. W poezji litewskiej świt/zmierzch kojarzy się z różnymi obiektami porównywanymi z poezją rosyjską (dzikie truskawki i jagody, ptaki, ryby i węże w poezji litewskiej; żurawina, arbuzy i jabłka, ptaki i zwierzęta w poezji rosyjskiej).

The article raises important and at the same time very interesting questions about the limits and constraints on metaphors in the light of the conceptions of cognitive linguistics and some well known works like Lakoff – Johnson (1980, 1999), Turner (1990) or Krzeszowski (1997, 2006). It investigates both theoretical and practical aspects of conceptual metaphor, aiming also at identifying the apparently weak points in the reasoning of the quoted authors, especially when it comes to distinguishing between. “oneshot” and. “conventional” or even between. “possible” and. “impossible” metaphors. The author of the article tries to prove that it is very difficult to impose limitations on metaphors and brings into question, among other things, the claim that metaphorization is impossible if synthetic concepts, such as mathematical figures, are involved. In his analysis, the author refers also to the Conduit Metaphor, as seen by Reddy (1979), which seems to be very helpful in understating the processes behind the forming of other metaphorical constructions, although is often criticized by linguists as allegedly being a faulty conception structuring human communication.

Since the advent of Cognitive Linguistics in the 20th century (cf. Lakoff & Johnson, 1980/2003), the role and perception of metaphor(isation) started to change, not only among theoretical linguists and researchers, but also in the context of Applied Linguistics. Thus, no longer treated as a mere ornament or anomaly, metaphor has been more and more appreciated by educationalists, course book writers, and teachers, but also by psychologists, clinicians, and other professionals. In short, it has become an educational and a diagnostic tool in many ‘applied’ areas of human development. In line with this rekindled interest in metaphoricity, in my study I attempt to learn more about awareness and perception of metaphoric conceptualisations among English philology university students (both freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors) in the environment of academia, an environment they naturally function in and belong to. My preliminary assumption is that despite the already widely acknowledged importance of metaphors in sciences and humanities (cf. Cameron and Maslen 2010, Haase 2009, 2010; Hermann 2013), the perception and awareness of metaphorical construals in the ‘academic habitat’ among prospective English philologists may be variegated, ranging between more traditional and more modern perspectives. My intention is, then, to obtain feedback from them as it concerns their views on (the role of) metaphor(ization) in the academic habitat and beyond it, in their life and in the world in general. The results reveal that the students are closer to traditional rather than modern stances on metaphor, though the situation is more complex.

Opis:
The objective of the paper is to present a Cognitive Semantics approach to Darwin’s theory of evolution. An analysis of the text of The Origin of Species allowed to identify a number of conceptual metaphors, such as: EVOLUTIONARY CHANGE IS A JOURNEY, MODIFICATION IS SUBSTANCE, ORGANISMS ARE FAMILY MEMBERS, RELATIONSHIPS AMONG ORGANISMS ARE STRUGGLE, and personification of natural selection. The metaphors are illustrated by excerpts from Darwin’s book. It is claimed that conceptual metaphors contribute to coherence of Darwin’s argument, help to present the theory in a comprehensive and interesting way, and have impact on evolutionary reasoning due to metaphorical entailments. The analysis provides evidence that the logic of the evolutionary theory derives partially from the logic of source domains through which the fundamental concepts of change and relationships among organisms are conceptualized. Finally, it is argued that evolutionary texts offer a rich source of well-documented materials valuable for diachronic studies of metaphor in scientific discourse, beginning with Darwin’s notebooks, through his books, and then over 150 years of evolutionary texts, both scientific and popular, by various authors. It is also believed that a Cognitive Semantics analysis can provide useful insights for better understanding the evolutionary theory as well as controversies around its presentation and reception.

Understanding metaphors with vehicles from the animal domain – a developmental perspective The aim of the presented empirical study was to explore the development of metaphor understanding in children. The results of the study were to reveal the way the mind organises information belonging to different fields of knowledge. The study followed a quasi-experimental design. The subjects were 77 children from three age groups: 5;6–6;0, 8;0–8;6, 9;6–10;0. The dependent variable was the level of comprehension of metaphors with vehicles from the animal domain, but connoting human attributes. The variable was measured through individual Piagetian interviews. The study proper was preceded by a pilot study on 24 adults. The data collected were analysed with the help of raters. The study confirmed the hypothesis that the ability to activate metaphorical thinking increases with age, however the increase is not linear. Older children assigned more human dispositional traits, thoughts and preferences to the objects of metaphors. Younger ones often focused on the physical features of animals. With age, the tendency to give positive evaluations to the objects of metaphors increases, while the number of digressions decreases. The development of the understanding of conventional metaphors may take a different course than the development of the understanding of creative ones. The most distinct changes in the ability of understanding metaphors concerning humans appear at the age of eight.

The article combines the approach to idiom classification according to Langlotz (2006) and the recently suggested analytical framework for figurative language analysis known under the name of the Extended Conceptual Metaphorical Theory (Kovecses 2020). The aim of the article is to identify some of the conceptual pathways of ANGER idioms in English. The analysis of 37 idioms for expressing ANGER revealed that both metaphorical (e.g. go through/hit the root) and metonymic (e.g. make someone's hackles rise) motivations play a crucial role in the transparency of the idiomatic meaning. It was also concluded that three image schemas in particular play a crucial role in metaphorical idioms for expressing the concept of ANGER in English: ACTIVITY IS MOTIO N, INTENSITY OF ACTIVITY IS HEAT and ANGER IS HEAT. However, contrary to the HEAT element, which is particularly salient in linguistic metaphors for expressing ANGER (e.g. kindle the wrath), it is the MOTION element which plays the crucial role in the conceptualizations of ANGER in idioms in English (e.g. go through/hit the roof, flip the lid, fly off the handle).

The article presents the manners in which news concerning election campaign is constructed in news bulletins, with special emphasis on metaphorical perspective. The author focused on three kinds of metaphor: sport, war, and spectacle. The aim of the analysis is to present both the quantitative dimension of this issue and the qualitative investigation into particular statements. What is particularly interesting are the different meanings which emerge from this communication, in order to, consequently, display that the way politics is presented by the mass media could influence voters’ reception.

This article describes the usage and occurrence of metaphorical phraseologisms and their functions in non-scientific medical articles. According to Harald Weinrich’s theory [1976] and cognitive theory of metaphors by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson [1980], metaphorical phraseologisms, as well as single metaphors can be associated with subordinate concepts. Due to high complicity of metaphors described in this article they appear in the form of constellations and have been arranged according to such concepts as: MEDICINE IS A GAME, ILLNESS IS AN ENEMY AND THERAPY IS A STRUGGLE and also SICKNESS AND LEADING TO SICKNESS IS A CRIME.

Encountered at all levels of language, conceptual asymmetries between source and target languages present translators with fundamental challenges that require problem awareness, problem identification and problem solving. A case in point is conceptual metaphor in translation. Versions of conceptual metaphor theory have been applied in various productoriented studies of how translators deal with the challenge of metaphor in translation. However, there is potential in combining product-oriented approaches with techniques used to access translators’ cognitive processes, although process-oriented studies on how conceptual metaphor is re-conceptualised or re-mapped in translation are still rare. Building on an exploratory study carried out at our institute, in which findings from translation process data suggest that experience and/or training appears to be a main factor in handling conceptual metaphor, we present some salient features of re-mapping metaphor. Triangulating data from target-text products, keystroke logs and retrospective verbal commentaries collected under very similar conditions in a laboratory setting, we analyse how translators at different levels of experience handle two complex conceptual metaphors. The results appear to suggest that complex metaphor might indeed be culturespecific. They also potentially indicate that re-mapping practices are a function of experience and that re-mapping to a source-language target domain could create more uncertainty than generic-level re-mapping. Both findings hold pedagogical implications, which are discussed together with some methodological issues.

The status of the metaphor: terminology and categorizations The article is divided into two parts. In the first one, the author reflects on the metaphorical terminology born according to various classifications, especially along the usual/unusual axis based on the criterion of frequency of use and the evocation of original image. In the second part of the article, on the basis of previous reflections, the author proposes to focus on the partial nature of the metaphorical structuring in the cognitive theory of metaphor developed by Lakoff and Johnson. That concept is the classifying criterion to distinguish between the original metaphor and the filling one (metafora riempitiva). In addition, the author lays special emphasis on the status of the so-called sleeping metaphor, oscillating between the category of the metaphor conventional and the unconventional one.

The Polish translation of Gerhard Helbig’s work „Geschichte der neueren Sprachwissenschaft“ (‘The History of Modern Linguistics’) documents similarities in the metaphorics of the German and Polish metalanguages, which confirms the thesis about the congruence of metaphors of Western culture. Theoretical aspects will be discussed that may help in the translation of the metaphor.

The aim of the paper is to determine the ways of metaphorising land and its crops by inhabitants of the Kłobuck county associated with agriculture. The metaphor is understood according to the assumptions of the cognitive stream of linguistics, i.e. as a linguistic means of conceptualising reality, and not only as a stylistic means. The analyses are aimed not only at describing the lexical resources of the subjects, but above all at determining the forms of their thinking and acting. One hundred inhabitants of the Kłobuck county took part in the survey. A half of them were between 20 and 40 years old, while the other half were at least 65 years old. The research tool was an interview questionnaire consisting of four questions. The questions were open-ended in order to decode the metaphor of land and its crops. The research made it possible to draw unambiguous conclusions about the conceptual tendencies manifested by both groups of respondents.

Opis:
By conducting an examination of the mapping process in metaphor comprehension, this article suggests that a set of superficially different metaphors can be considered to be isomorphic to an underlying generic metaphor. In other words, a set of seemingly different metaphors with different domains can be categorized under a single generic metaphor. The generic metaphor is in the general form of X is in some kind of semantic relationship with Y. When this generic metaphor is realized in specific-level forms, a number of metaphors are produced which are isomorphic to each other, although their domains could be completely different in appearance. In other words, there is a deep homogeneity among a set of concretely different metaphors. A generic metaphor can be seen as a semantic frame for all specific metaphors that are isomorphic to it. Since base and target domains of a given metaphor can be very different in terms of concrete features, the mapping of the base into the target must be mediated by the domain of its underlying generic metaphor.

Opis:
W ostatnim czasie nastąpiła intensyfikacja badań nad synestezją z perspektywy różnych dziedzin i dyscyplin naukowych. Wciąż jednak stosunkowo niewiele publikacji dotyczy przekładu synestezji i metafor synestezyjnych. Analiza materiału językowego dotyczy przekładu dwóch odmian metafor synestezyjnych – konwencjonalnych i niekonwencjonalnych (żywych). Pierwsze z nich, jako przejaw uniwersalnych tendencji do kojarzenia wrażeń zmysłowych pochodzących z różnych modalności, często w różnych językach realizują ten sam koncept metaforyczny.
The present paper is devoted to the analysis of synaesthetic metaphors in the Russian language from the perspective of their translation into Polish. The theoretical discussion is supported by the analysis of the translation of two types of synaesthetic metaphors – conventional and creative. As it has been shown, the behaviour of synaesthetic metaphors in translation is similar to that of other metaphors. In conventional metaphors historically close languages, such as Russian and Polish, often share similar cross-modal mappings, which make it possible to find a corresponding metaphor. In the case of creative synaesthetic metaphors, a word-by-word translation seem to be the most successful strategy. The translators, however, try to find more creative solution by modifying the synaesthetic association in the target language text.

Students’ attitudes towards entrepreneurship are an important issue in entrepreneurial education. They include cognitive, emotional and behavioural aspects that influence students’ willingness to start their own business. Diagnosis of students’ entrepreneurial attitudes is crucial for the preparation of appropriate training programmes. In this paper, some commonly used proverbs and phrases (referred to as metaphors) are proposed as a diagnostic method for the assessment of entrepre neurial attitudes and as a pragmatic method that can be used to form proactive entrepreneurial attitudes. The aim of the study was to verify that entrepreneurial metaphors described in the literature are up to date and to identify current metaphors pertaining to running a new business as perceived by business students. The authors’ original questionnaire was used to evaluate the accuracy of known metaphors (4-point Likert’s scale) and to identify student’s own metaphors. Statistical analysis of obtained results (the t-Student test for one group was used) showed that the most accurate metaphors related to entrepreneurship were related to its perception as a management process, hard work, overcoming obstacles and competition. Analysis of metaphors created by the respondents allowed to identify three dominant categories of entrepreneurial activities: overcoming obstacles and barriers, taking risk in uncertain environment and proactivity understood as responsibility for the new venture development. The research resulted in a catalogue of current entrepreneurship metaphors and in the list of recommendations for entrepreneurial education. We also presented an example of the such usage in practice.

Sex and sexuality are two obsessions of the 19th century. As the literature of this time, influenced by the Victorian hypocritical morality, rejects these subjects, considered as “immoral”, the relation of any form of sexual act is consequently absent in the works of 19th century writers, even of those who consider themselves as realists. However, the work of a writer like Emile Zola cannot overlook this problem, so important for naturalism. For Zola, sex is a vital activity and should be shown in works of art. Therefore, to give his writings the appearance of decency, Zola uses metaphors that “sexualise” some elements of the world of his novels, like plants, animals, things, places and everyday occupations. This allows him to show, in an imaginary way, the aspects of life that cannot be displayed openly and directly. Thank to his poetic talent these images constitute a valuable part of his Rougon-Macquart series.

This contribution examines the poetic potential of exophony using Julya Rabinowich’s novel Spaltkopf, which is read as a draft of a multidimensional identity conflict. In comparison with multilingual perspectives and exophonic spellings by Yoko Tawada, Herta Müller, Dragica Rajčić, Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Saša Stanišić and Semier Insayif, the tilting effects between metaphorical and literal readings are particularly focused.

Józef Tischner’s Myślenie z wnętrza metafory [Thinking From Within the Metaphor] and Bartłomiej Maliszewski’s Metafora i aksjologia [Metaphor and Axiology] are texts that are both described (analysed) and interpreted here. However, the debatability of the dual understanding of metaphor (‘inside’ – ‘outside’) is only a preliminary difficulty. For it will be incomparably more important that when we read Thinking From Within the Metaphor, then we will not find an explanation of the authorial meaning attributed to the after all key term of his text, and this is by no means a coincidence. The fundamental opposition – unambiguous genre language versus axiological and agathological analogical (metaphorical, symbolic) language – is certainly a persuasive construction, but not necessarily a valid one. A fundamental literary problem: is the Platonic cave really a metaphor? In Bartłomiej Maliszewski’s book Metafora i aksjologia wzorzec człowieka w renesansowej literaturze parenetycznej [Metaphor and Axiology. The Model of Man in Renaissance Parenetic Literature], ‘metaphor’ is equated with the ‘figurative’. There would be nothing reprehensible in this if not for the fact that these two key terms in the book co-create a state of approximate numerical equilibrium, while (and this is more important) proving to be both identical and disjointed. The lack of a definition of ‘metaphor’ and ‘figurative’ makes the whole impressive argument resemble a colossus standing on two legs of clay, over which it stumbles as they become entangled. The legitimacy of the combined view of Thinking From Within the Metaphor and Metaphor and Axiology is contained primarily in the fact that Renaissance parenesis can be seen as one of the historical forms of agathology.

In this paper, I will argue that awareness of images and metaphors held by foreign language learners about the nature of the target language and its learning can be of substantial value and provide teaching practitioners with useful insights about how to deal with various language learning problems. To elicit images which learners hold about foreign language learning, a questionnaire was given to 350 learners of English in different places in Iran. The questionnaire asked the respondents to provide images about learning a foreign language by using a sentence completion task: “Learning a foreign language is like . . .” The responses gained in 200 questionnaires were content-analyzed and the identified images and metaphors were summarized under more broad-ranging categories. The information that the metaphors and the resulting metaphorical categories provide and the theoretical interpretations which can plausibly be made are discussed in some detail and put in a cognitive-psychological perspective.

The problematic gap between legal and social norms exists in copyright law. The consequences of this gap are severe and include: not following copyright rules, and a big conflict between artists and recipients of a culture. In this context, copyright piracy is prevalent in Poland and legal tools aimed to protect interests of artists have failed. Copyright law might have been in sync with analogue era, but not to digital world. Identification of roots of the discrepancy between social expectations and legally binding rules might be the first step toward rectifying of situation. This article demonstrates the conceptual metaphors as a possible reason for malfunctioning the copyright law. Some metaphors treat intangible objects as tangible ones (intellectual or artistic work) and might pose difficulties mentioned above. Additionally, Larsson defined a group of metaphors in legal system. Bound with them are metaphors outside of law. For example, if law treats intellectual property as tangible property, than metaphors outside the copyright legal system, such as piracy apply. Polish copyright law in the context of Lakoff – Johnson theory of metaphors is a framework of the study.

In language, a metaphor has an ambiguous status. On one hand, it is considered to be a free speech procedure, largely ornamental, resulting from a random assembly of words, not assisted by use, and therefore exposed to interpretation and ambiguity. Consequently, its presence in specialized languages, governed since Wüster approach by requirements of discourse neutrality, objectivity and precision, would seem to be inappropriate. On the other hand, the metaphor is recognized as an effective neological process that contributes to lexical enrichment; even more, in light of recent cognitive studies, it is regarded as element which guides our perception of the world, structures our thinking and helps to conceptualize unknown areas. Reflection on the role of terms which take the form of metaphors, the ones that participate in the denomination of concepts, list its classes and examine semantic motivation in metaphorization process, has dominated the analysis undertaken in this paper; analysis, the subject of which was the French and Polish terminology in the field of the individual retirement plans.

Opis:
Metaphors and comparisons are typical features of the ancient texts describing celestial bodies, and they can be treated as a part of a broader cultural practice of seeking analogies between earth and sky phenomena, inspired by the microcosm/macrocosm theory. To explain such a practice we can refer to the modern theory of imagination as well, according to which appreciation of nature is based, among others, on the so-called “projective imagination”, transferring mentally the images from the terrestrial reality to the sky. One of the obvious instances of such an analogical thinking is “katasterismos”, mythic narration about the item placed in the heavens as a star or constellation. It appears that among the objects on the sky described as a result of “catasterism” we can find some specimens of jeweller’s craftsmanship (e.g. Ariadne’s Crown as Corona Borealis). This is, however, a specific situation; astronomical descriptions usually emphasize the brightness and perfection of the sky phenomena using above-mentioned poetic devices associated with jewellery. Most popular among them is the metaphoric epithet of “gold”, linked commonly with stars and the sun, but besides this, in the works of Roman authors can be detected more original imagery (e.g. the cosmos as a necklace). It is argued in the paper that this kind of astronomical descriptions can be interpreted against the backdrop of the history of the “visual metaphors of value”, as they were defined by Ernst Gombrich.

SYNAMET - A Microcorpus of Synesthetic Metaphors. Preliminary Premises of the Description of Metaphor in DiscourseThis article describes the preliminary premises of metaphor annotation in SYNAMET - the developing microcorpus of synesthetic metaphors. The analysis is based on the CLST theory (Context-Limited Simulation Theory) put forward by D. Ritchie. According to this theory, the metaphor’s vehicle may activate various types of associations between words: semantic relations, perceptual sensations, or emotional simulations. The range of potential associations evoked by the vehicle is limited by the topic, i.e. the lexical context in which the metaphor appears. The relations between the vehicle and the topic may be presented in the form of a semantic frame. To reconstruct the frames within the project, linguistic works devoted to sensory perception- vision, hearing, smell and taste- will be utilized. The corpus annotation will consist of the following stages: 1) metaphor identification, 2) indication of the metaphor cluster (CM) - a phrase or a passage of the text, centered around one referent, 3) isolation of the metaphorical units (MU) - word forms or phrases combining lexemes primarily belonging to different perceptual frames. The outcome of the MU analysis will include: a general metaphorical scheme of the MU, lexical items activating the frame of the MU (together with their grammatical description), a detailed metaphor scheme of the MU, and the semantic and grammatical categorization of the MU. SYNAMET – mikrokorpus metafor synestezyjnych. Wstępne założenia opisu metafory w dyskursieArtykuł opisuje wstępne założenia anotacji metafor w powstającym mikrokorpusie metafor synestezyjnych SYNAMET. Podstawą metody opisu będzie teoria CLST (Context-Limited Simulation Theory) D. Ritchie’go. Wyniki analizy JM zostaną przestawione w postaci: ogólnego schematu metaforycznego, zestawu wyrazów aktywujących ramy (wraz z ich opisem gramatycznym), szczegółowego schematu metaforycznego, kategoryzacji semantycznej i gramatycznej metafor.

The article aims to show the role of the context and the situation of speaking (communication situation) in the process of updating the meaning of phraseological units (fixed expressions). It has been observed that in communication, disambiguation usually takes place by means of context. On the other hand, it turned out that the context itself can be a source of ambiguity. The results obtained in this short study seem to confirm the claim that the update is essentially a modal process, and the semantic coherence results from the interweaving of language, pragmatic, socio-cultural and cognitive constraints.

Opis:
The present paper aims at analyzing the conceptual metaphors for sin identified in the English version of the Bible. The experience of moral evil belongs to basic human experiences and in theological interpretation, its existence is the reason for the salvation brought to people by Christ. However, from the semantic point of view, the concept of sin itself is highly abstract and difficult to defi ne. In order to conceptualize that notion, people frequently employ conceptual metaphors which enable them to refer to the abstract through the use of the concrete. This study is based on the English translation of Scripture published as the New Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition (2007[1989]). That version of Scripture is a revised edition of the famous King James Bible (1611) and it is widely used among Christians representing various denominations. The identifi ed sin metaphors are based on either sensorimotor or cultural experience. There are conceptualizations of sin that are motivated by preconceptual image schemas, ontological metaphors, and metaphors that combine cultural scripts and image schemas.

This article attempts to characterize the way four translators, who dealt with the work of the Polish poet, translated his metaphors into Czech. A comparative analysis of the solutions adopted by Vlasta Dvořáčková, Iveta Mikešova, Jan Pilař and František Kvapil shows how important rhyme and rhythm are in Leśmian’s works and how translational decisions influence the semantic layer of a poem in the target language. For the analysis of metaphorical expressions, I use the theory of concept metaphor introduced by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson in Metaphors we live by.

The present text offers a few comments on the metaphorical dimension of legal language and the nature of legal language as such. The authors discuss selected metaphors in the context of the Polish legislation with the aim to show how the metaphorical dimension of language can be used and abused. It is also demonstrated that the metaphorical dimension of language can cross-cut the interface between language and law on different levels. There are metaphors in legal texts that can be deliberately used to emphasise or cover selected aspects of meaning, and others that can just happen to act irrespective of any premeditated action on the part of the legislator. Finally, in a wider perspective, it is shown that the relation between ordinary language and the language of the law, i.e. ordinary meaning and legal meaning, may itself be seen as a relation between two domains within which metaphorical mapping takes place. It is claimed that the divide between the realm of law and the “real world” goes beyond a trivial division relative to expertise in the law and expertise in legal discourse, but can be better understood as the division between the legal community and the non-legal community including the academia where linguists reside.

Animal-related surnames represent a fragment of the English lexicon where morphology and (broadly understood) semantics meet and exert mutual infl uence on each other. It seems that in animal-based nomination language users employ such morphological mechanisms as, for example, affixation or compounding which, in turn, seem to be conceptually motivated by metaphor and metonymy.

Paul Ricoeur uncovered the creative aspect of language in his theory of metaphor. The metaphor is a special combination of words that as a clash of distant semantic fields forces the reader to interpret the sentence in a new way and see things in a new light. It is a process in which the imagination plays an important role. Ricoeur compares the metaphor to the Kantian schema which is a procedure to provide an image to a concept. The image helps in the process of assimilating distant elements and thus to achieve a new interpretation. To change perspective the suspension of reference (imaginary neutralization) is also needed. The aim of this essay is to analyze the imaginative functions which are operative in the metaphor and look for an answer to the question about the role of the imagination as a productive power as well as a power of internal intuitions.

The title of the cycle, the place of its creation, opening and closing poems and dedication constitute on an aesthetic whole that is built on the megametaphor me is an echo. The importance of this metaphor, which is the basic figure of the poetic language, arises from the process of interpretation, so is inherently subjective. By drawing attention to the issue of interpretation, cognitivism emphasizes the role subjectiviza- tion as the basis for semantic extensions, and conceptualization. Important role for the conceptuali- zation of the analyzed cycle plays the closed composition. By repeating the sounds of different places and times the lyrical body sees itself as an echo of the spacetime. In this way, a metaphor me is an echo becomes the primary metaphor of the cycle.

However, we disagree with the authors’ claim that such metaphors provide the main mechanism in the emergence of new notions in advanced mathematics.
