The Kibble balance experiment is used to redefine the kilogram as a unit of mass based on the Planck constant. To demonstrate and understand the basic principle of the Kibble balance, the National Institute of Standards (NIS)-Egypt has constructed a prototype Kibble balance that can measure gram-level masses with 0.01% relative uncertainty. Through the construction of this prototype, the challenges can be studied and addressed to overcome the weaknesses of NIS’s prototype. This study presents the design and construction of the prototype Kibble balance. It also focuses on the design and performance of the magnetic system, which is a crucial element of the Kibble balance. Analytical modeling and finite element analysis were used to evaluate and improve the magnet system. Several other aspects were also discussed, including the yoke’s material and enhancing the magnetic profile within the air gap of the magnet system. Over a vertical distance of 30 mm inside the air gap, the magnetic flux density was found to be 0.3 T, and the uniformity was found to be 8 x 10-5.

The paper deals with the magnetic system of the disk separator with permanent magnets. It is shown that the developed magnetic system can be used to purify finely dispersed friable substances from unwanted ferromagnetic inclusions. The main advantage of the magnetic system is the ability to self-clean the surface of a non-magnetic rotating discharging disk. The research of the distribution of the force function acting on multi-domain ferromagnetic particles in the working zone of the disk separator was carried out. To solve the main tasks of the study, a finite element method was implemented, realized in the COMSOL Multiphysics software environment. It is shown that when changing the air gap or the effective length of the poles, the distribution of the force function over the height of the working zone, as well as the magnitude of force, varies. The rational size of the air interpolar gap, which provides the maximum value of power force, was determined.

W ramach międzynarodowego projektu FAIR, którego uczestnikiem jest również Polska, budowany jest obecnie w Darmstad (Niemcy) akcelerator kołowy. Będzie on służyć do rozpędzania ciężkich jonów do prędkości bliskich prędkości światła. Akcelerator ten będzie zbudowany z magnesów nadprzewodzących co pozwoli m.in. na minimalizację strat energii elektrycznej. Utrzymanie magnesów akceleratora w stanie nadprzewodnictwa wymaga kontroli kluczowych jego parametrów zarówno przed pierwszym uruchomieniem jak i w trakcie eksploatacji. Na Wydziale Elektrotechniki i Automatyki Politechniki Gdańskiej opracowywany jest obecnie system pomiarowo-diagnostyczny, który ma służyć do testowania stanu obwodów elektrycznych magnesów nadprzewodzących. W artykule przedstawiono wymagania stawiane przed systemem pomiarowym oraz koncepcję działania podsystemów do kontroli stanu izolacji oraz poprawności połączeń magnesów. Omówiono także wnioski wypływające z badań elementów systemu pomiarowego.
Poland is a member of international project FAIR. The purpose of this project is construction of a circular accelerator of heavy ions in Darmstadt (Germany). The main part of the accelerator are superconducting magnets. Maintaining superconducting magnets capable of superconductivity requires precise control of the parameters before the first run and during their operation. For this purpose, the research team at the Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering of Gdansk University of Technology conducts research on specialized diagnostic and measurement system for testing electrical circuits of superconducting magnets in the project FAIR. This paper presents the requirements for diagnostic system and concept of hardware for subsystems testing the resistance insulation and cerrectness of electrical circuit of superconducting magnet. It also presents the conclusions from experimental research of essential system components.

The article presents a mathematical model of a permanent magnet motor, powered by a three-phase source of sinusoidal voltage, and a control method. Cooperation between numerical integration algorithms in the differential equation system of the motor and an inverter has been verified. The results of numerical simulations are presented in a graphic form. This article is an extension of the publication [12], in which a model of a drive system was proposed, consisting of: a battery, a supercapacitor and a method of controlling these energy sources during a driving cycle of a vehicle. For vector control, the mathematical model of a synchronous machine in the dq coordinate system is the most common one. The most important feature of this control method is the fact that the iq component of the rotor current vector determines the value of motor torque, and the component id – the value of magnetic flux. In the article, the emphasis is put on how inverters work. Their basic task is to generate such currents iabc or voltages uabc to obtain torque without ripples. It leads to development of different control concepts for achieving this goal, which are related to the modelling of magnetic fluxes in a stator and in an inverter.

A variety of magnetic fishing tools poses the task of the optimal choice of tool for eliminating accidents during the construction, operation and repair of wells. Existing criteria for assessing the quality of fishing magnets are characterized by the complexity of the determination and the ambiguity of the results. Therefore, the aim of research is development of a new approach to determining the technical level of fishing tools of various types and designs. A complex criterion has been developed that allows to evaluate the technical level of magnetic systems by correlating the actual and theoretical values of the total and specific lifting forces. Also it has been carried out a qualimetric analysis of magnetic tools, which are currently offered by world manufacturers. As a result, mathematical models are found that describe the average and modern world level of devices with specific lifting force. Technical decisions are proposed, the implementation of which in the design of magnetic systems of fishing tools will allow to achieve high values of lifting force. Application of the proposed complex criterion along with the results of qualimetric analysis will make it possible to objectively assess the technical level of magnetic fishing tools both at the design stage and during serial production.

Akcelerator ciężkich jonów SIS100 jest budowany na terenie ośrodka badań jądrowych GSI w Darmstadt (Niemcy) w ramach międzynarodowego projektu FAIR. Cząstki elementarne będą w nim rozpędzane do prędkości przekraczających 99% prędkości światła przy pomocy elektromagnesów nadprzewodnikowych, z których będzie zbudowany akcelerator. Przed umieszczeniem magnesów w akceleratorze są one poddawane szczegółowej kontroli w celu oceny ich przydatności do pracy w warunkach nadprzewodnictwa. W Politechnice Gdańskiej jest opracowywany system umożliwiający zautomatyzowaną kontrolę kluczowych parametrów elektrycznych elektromagnesów na etapie ich budowy a także eksploatacji. W celu spełnienia wysokich wymagań dotyczących parametrów oraz trwałości działania, system pomiarowy musi być zbudowany z restrykcyjnie dobranych elementów. W referacie przedstawiono opis stanowiska testującego najważniejsze elementy systemu wraz z przykładowymi wynikami badań.
The SIS100 Heavy Ion Accelerator is being built at the GSI nuclear research centre in Darmstadt (Germany) as part of the international FAIR project. The elementary particles will be accelerated to speeds exceeding 99% of the speed of light by means of superconducting electromagnets, from which the accelerator is built. Before magnets are placed in the accelerator, they are subjected to a detailed inspection in order to assess their suitability for operation in superconductivity conditions. At the Gdansk University of Technology, a system is being developed which allows for automated control of key electrical parameters of electromagnets at the stage of their construction and operation. In order to meet the high requirements concerning parameters and durability of operation, the measuring system must be built of carefully selected elements. High voltage switches are very important elements of this system. Selection of the right switches was an important problem due to the requirements concerning parameters and durability. The paper describes the constructed stand testing selected electrical parameters of the switches.

In this paper, dynamic response improvement of the grid connected hybrid system comprising of the wind power generation system (WPGS) and the photovoltaic (PV) are investigated under some critical circumstances. In order to maximize the output of solar arrays, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique is presented. In this paper, an intelligent control technique using the artificial neural network (ANN) and the genetic algorithm (GA) are proposed to control the MPPT for a PV system under varying irradiation and temperature conditions. The ANN-GA control method is compared with the perturb and observe (P&O), the incremental conductance (IC) and the fuzzy logic methods. In other words, the data is optimized by GA and then, these optimum values are used in ANN. The results are indicated the ANN-GA is better and more reliable method in comparison with the conventional algorithms. The allocation of a pitch angle strategy based on the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and comparison with conventional PI controller in high rated wind speed areas are carried out. Moreover, the pitch angle based on FLC with the wind speed and active power as the inputs can have faster response that lead to smoother power curves, improving the dynamic performance of the wind turbine and prevent the mechanical fatigues of the generator.

The variety of accidents which happen during the construction of oil and gas wells causes the expansion in the use of magnetic fishing tools. However, the known tools based on permanent magnets have a significant drawback involving the flat working surface of the magnetic system that does not permit to achieve a considerable attraction force to a fished object of complex geometric shape. Therefore, the aim of the research is to increase the efficiency of removal the objects of irregular geometric shape from the wells by enlarging the area of contacting them. For that purpose, it has been developed a fundamentally new design of the large-diameter fishing tool with the moving magnetic systems capable of copying the shape of the objects to be fished. Each magnetic system, which is compound of permanent rare-earth neodymium magnets and concentrically placed magnetic cores, shall be held by the magnetic field of adjacent systems with opposite polarity. There were conducted theoretical studies using the finite element method to determine the working capacity of the designed tool. As a result, it has been found the value of hoisting capacity during the interaction of magnetic systems with the roller cone of the drill bit; this fact confirms the capability of fishing the objects of irregular geometric shape. In addition, it has been explored the influence of the material of the fished object on the power characteristics of magnetic systems. The application of the designed magnetic tool allows removing the ferromagnetic objects from the well regardless of their shape, weight and position on the bottom hole. Apart from that, the given tool may be used in the areas where the technology of work is related to drilling wells.

Among the various methods for generating electricity on a ship, a shaft generator system is characterized by the highest energy and economic efficiency. The use of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) in these systems, in comparison to classic synchronous generators, improves the ship’s propulsion efficiency and the system’s reliability. The problem of adjusting the PMSG’s excitation and changing the speed of the generator’s shaft can be solved by the use of modern power and electronic systems. This article presents a method for controlling the mechatronic system of a shaft generator with a PMSG, which enables stable operation to be achieved when changing the rotational speed of the shaft. Analytical and simulation studies were carried out and have enabled the boundaries of the area in which the PMSG can operate to be determined, while maintaining the required electrical power. The results have shown that the use of a PMSG instead of an EESG can increase the energy efficiency of the shaft generator system and increases the system’s reliability

This paper considers the feasibility of different technologies for an electromagnetic launcher to assist civil aircraft take-off. This method is investigated to reduce the power required from the engines during initial acceleration. Assisted launch has the potential of reducing the required runway length, reducing noise near airports and improving overall aircraft efficiency through reducing engine thrust requirements. The research compares two possible linear motor topologies which may be efficaciously used for this application. The comparison is made on results from both analytical and finite element analysis (FEA).

This paper describes a study and the experimental verification of sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors using Kalman filters. There are proposed two structures, extended and unscented Kalman filters, which use only the measurement of the motor current for on-line estimation of speed, rotor position and load torque reconstruction. The Kalman filter is an optimal state estimator and is usually applied to a dynamic system that involves a random noise environment. These structures are described in detail, starting with the selection of the variables state vector, the filters structure, and ending with in-depth laboratory tests. It has become possible, without using position and torque sensors, to apply these control structures as a cost-effective solution. Experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed estimation techniques.

Wind energy has achieved prominence in renewable energy production. There- fore, it is necessary to develop a diagnosis system and fault-tolerant control to protect the system and to prevent unscheduled shutdowns. The presented study aims to provide an experimental analysis of a speed sensor fault by hybrid active fault-tolerant control (AFTC) for a wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The hybrid AFTC switches between a traditional controller based on proportional integral (PI) controllers under normal conditions and a robust backstepping controller system without a speed sensor to avoid any deterioration caused by the sensor fault. A sliding mode observer is used to estimate the PMSG rotor position. The proposed controller architecture can be designed for performance and robustness separately. Finally, the proposed methodwas successfully tested in an experimental set up using a dSPACE 1104 platform. In this experimental system, the wind turbine with a generator connection via a mechanical gear is emulated by a PMSM engine with controled speed through a voltage inverter. The obtained experimental results show clearly that the proposed method is able to guarantee service production continuity for the WECS in adequate transition.

The article discusses the universal current sensor fault detection and compensation mechanism, which can be applied in three-phase power electronics (PE) symmetrical system. The mechanism is based on the assumption that a symmetrical system can be described using different components in the stationary reference frame. The solution given in article as a Cri-base detector was tested in electrical drives with induction motors (IMs) and permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). This study also proves that the same algorithm can work stable in active rectifier systems. Such an application of this detector has not been previously reported in the literature. The article describes the detection of various types of faults in different phases. The fault-tolerant voltage-oriented control (FTVOC) of an active rectifier is compared with previously described solutions for IMs and PMSMs. By analysing in various types of systems, the work proves the universality of the detector based on Cri markers.

Opis:
In the article, the authors present power and torque characteristics of motor dedicated to an electric delivery vehicle with a weight of up to 3.5 tonnes. Hull models in three variants, differing in the cooling system and manufacturing technology have been presented. The performance analysis of cooling systems was carried out.
W artykule autorzy prezentują charakterystyki mocy i momentu obrotowego silnika dedykowanego do elektrycznego pojazdu dostawczego o masie do 3,5 t. Zostały przedstawione modele kadłuba w trzech wariantach, różniących się układem chłodzenia oraz technologią wykonania. Została przeprowadzona analiza wydajności układów chłodzenia.
