Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the plural forms of the first person found in Natalia Ivanovna Stepanova’s magical handbooks. The author (also known as the Siberian Healer) uses them for persuasive purposes: she tries to convince readers to use the magical practices (spells) she recommends. In the analysed material, mainly statements containing “inclusive we” are noted. Stepanova uses them to evoke a sense of community of experiences and values in her readers, as well as to invite them to joint actions and “include” them in the healers group that she represents. There are also forms of “exclusive we” in the handbooks under study. These forms play an important role in building Stepanova’s authenticity as a healer from Siberia: they help the author emphasise her close connection with her ancestors, who were famous for their healing practices and passed on their magical knowledge to her. The article also reflects on the specific communicative situation taking place in the interaction between the counsellor and the advice seeker, and highlights the problem of defining persuasion and manipulation.
W analizowanym materiale odnotowano przede wszystkim wypowiedzi zawierające „my inkluzywne”. Stiepanowa używa ich, by wywołać wrażenie wspólnoty doświadczeń i wartości, zaprosić czytelników do kolektywnego działania i „włączyć” do grupy znachorów, którą sama reprezentuje.

Opis:
This article concerns Bronisław Malinowski’s ethnographical theory  of magical word. His theory was a revolutionary one for two reasons (1)  he claimed that magical word is not an instrument of understanding of „primitive mentality” (2) he argued that analysis of magical word  demanded abandoning  of  textual  bias  which  entailed  our  seeing  linguistic  genres  as semantically autonomous texts. Malinowski was not so interested in the question of literacy. He  remarked, though,  that  writing  determinated  our  linguistic  reflection  and  that  magical word, as another oral linguistic genres, demanded a radical rejection of textual conceptions of  meaning,  language and folklore.  Although  Malinowski’s  methodological  stipulations were not always consistent and his rejection of textual bias was fairly half, his abandonment of the conception of „magical world view” which is  a foundation for uses of magic is still up-to-date.

Opis:
Incantations use the wedding code in order to fulfill the magical function which faces a cure or a protection, demanded by certain people. Thus the wedding code applied to the incantation turns out to be different from the wedding song itself. The phenomena of anti-speech (insults directed to the bride or to the wedding guests) and of inverse reality of the sacred moment  in  the  incantations  become  the  powerful  means  against  diseases  and  evil  spirits. While  modulating  the  wedding  ritual  objects  (wedding  shirt,  wreath,  veil,  flag),  or  ritual actions (giving gifts, repulsing the wedding guests, taking the bride away from her parents’ house), these objects and acts gain a secondary,  magical function that makes diseases and evil  spirits  drive  away.  The  wedding  songs  and  the  incantations  share  the  same  model  of space in which forest and water introduce themselves as the strong boundaries between two worlds:  of  the  living  and  of  the  dead.  While in  the first  case  the  boundaries  are  porous, allowing an interpenetration of both the worlds, inthe second one they remain closed off. The above mentioned genres also share some motifs –of a fast growing girl, hospitality (as well  as  of  an  uninvited  guest)  and  magical  counting.  Furthermore,  the  article  proves  that various  functions  determine  essentially  different  meanings  of  motifs,  ritual  actions  and eventually characters which appear in these folklore genres.

Opis:
Religion is a powerful phenomenon arising in and from society. Various efforts have been done to understand religion as a natural phenomenon, which could be framed in the language of science. In this paper, I forward a sui generis approach to the naturality of religion, where religion is explained as one of the next stages in broader natural processes of self-organization. Furthermore, having framed like this the naturality of the religious experience, the paper explores the contemporary debate of current religious expressions. It is suggested that the arrival of science and the modern society have changed some expressions of religious experiences; while, nonetheless, keeping their capacity to self-organize societies. The magical realist society, as the society capable of disguising the magic of religion within the realism of the scientific ethos, is presented and discussed as a modern secular expression of religion, capable to cope with the challenges of science through the dynamics of modernity and capitalism.

Opis:
The magical function, understood as all symptoms of rituality, is dichotomously realized inSinodik from Wojnowo: (1) in calls to perform the ritual of “remembering the dead”, (2) indefining rules for this ritual. Both directions are realized verbally and nonverbally. The book isboth a nonverbal call as well as a tool to perform the call. In Sinodik, verbal encouragement topray is also present. The text of Sinodik is a collection of rules and rights to perform the ritual, i.e.a verbal and nonverbal behaviour of those who pray. The nonverbal ritual is revealed also in thegraphic presentation of the book.

The article focuses on some examples of magic in traditional folk lullabies and lyrical lullabies for children. The aforementioned types of genre should invoke child’s sleep by using special words or melody. On the other hand, traditional lullabies were used to protect children or bring them health and happiness. To accomplish this, the singer often called some „higher  being”  for  help.  In  the article  that  kind  of  speech  acts  are  considered  as  magical behavior.  The  second  part  of  the text  discusses  use of  language,  character  of  content  and some special procedures in lyrical lullabies, that can be called „magical”. The purpose of the research was to present one of the manifestations of magical thinking in late childhood, i.e. belief in the causative power of words, and relations between this phenomenon and language. One hundred and three primary school students (43 girls and 60 boys), grades 4 to 6, aged 10 to 13 were studied. A significant relation was found between belief in the direct effect of words on reality, and correct comprehension and number of phraseological units concerning the causative power of words.

Mikhail Elizarov (b. 1973 in Ukraine) undoubtedly belongs to the most “bizarre”, controversial and uncompromising contemporary Russian writers, the most radical of Russian Booker winners – his novel The Librarian was awarded the 2008 Russian Booker Prize. Elizarov is also a musician, working in a style he calls “bard-punk-chanson”. His literary works “balance” on the verge of postmodernist and realistic practice, between reality and phantasmagoria. The aim of this article is to present a creative personality of the author: to reveal distinguishing features of Elizarov’s prose, to identify central motifs and themes in Elizarov’s selected literary works. Special attention is paid to Elizarov’s interest in violence and death, as well as the theme of Soviet nostalgia. Elizarov’s two novels and the collection of short stories and stories are analyzed in the article. These are The Librarian (2007), The Cartoons (2010) and Fingernails (2001).

Opis:
In Japan, the beginning of the seventeenth century gave birth to a new type of literature – anti-Catholic fiction, which aimed at fostering hostility towards foreign missionaries among the mass reader. Late examples of such literature attributed to the apostles of the new faith several supernatural powers (i.e. the ability to fly, disappear, tell fortunes), that separated them from their human dimension. One of the common themes featured in eighteenth and nineteenth century works was a magical experiment which involved conjuring a ghost. Designed to attract the “Catholic sect”, it brought about a campaign of persecution from the authorities instead. Despite adopting a chronicle-like convention in the anti-Catholic fiction, as the paper indicates, it relied heavily on pre-existing legends about the Japanese sorcerer Kashin Koji. Finally, the experiment was most likely imitated in the real word and reused as a method of recruitment by the nineteenth century quasi-Catholic sect established by Mizuno Gunki.

Opis:
The theme  of this paper is the magic power of the obscene words and jokes in traditional Serbian culture, on the example of women’s only festival revena in Banat. This ritual represents one day holiday that was celebrated in the beginning of spring, before the Eastern Fast. During revena women gathered for a celebration during which their behavior was completely different than usual, transgressing all the strict  norms that prevailed in everyday reality  of patriarchal  society.  Except for  the  excessive  drinking  and  eating,  women  expressed  their sexuality freely and they spoke about it in the most obscene way. Apart from the verbal part, the ritual of revena had also its performative side. Thus women were proving their female sex by raising the skirt (in the Kumane village), and this act functioned as some kind of pass to enter the revena. During the  holiday, some women were dressed  up as men in order to fulfill the necessary male roles for the sexual games, because no man (except for the musician) was allowed to be present on this holiday. The analysis in this paper, devoted above all to the magic power of the obscene language in the traditional culture, is inscribed into the Bakhtin’s theory of carnival. It is applied here not only to the carnivalesque behavior, but also to the concrete verbal obscene content. These obscenities are inseparable from laughter, so the magic power of laughter (as defined by Veselin  Čajkanović) is also analyzed in this paper, and, apart from appearing in revena, it represented important part of the funeral ritual.
