Opis:
The author of the article proposes a relational analysis of literary culture. Relational research treats the newest model of literary production as a set of complex relations between the author and his or her image, the text, economics, marketing, criticism by the work’s audience, the media, the technological framework, and so forth. These relations provide the sphere of possibilities for literature and its agents. Increasingly intricate relations are drawing the fields of literature, the media, and economics nearer to each other; these fields are becoming more accessible in order to facilitate the exchange of various kinds of capital and to create conditions for the development of literary fame and author brands. The relational concept of literary culture provides a better tool for the analysis of the contemporary phenomenon of writer-celebrities, which is key to understanding the functioning of the entire field of literature.

This article looks at Professor Stanisław Jaworski’s contribution to the development of textual criticism in Poland. It was his book I write, therefore I am that offered Polish readers a comprehensive and erudite introduction to French genetic and textual criticism. Published in 1993, it set this enormously important critical movement in the broader perspective of cultural and literary anthropology. The second part of the article examines the impact of this book on Polish studies into the processes of text creation and the ‘avant-textes’. The third, fi nal part surveys the late Professor Jaworski’s role in organizing conferences and stimulating debate on all aspects of genetic criticism.

In 1919 the historian of Polish science and education Stanisław Kot wrote that in the English constitutional conflict between Royalists and Roundheads in the first half of the seventeenth century, played out not only on the battlefields but also in the war of the pamphlets, participants used to turn to Continental examples for viable models of the constitutional form of the state they were advocating. According to Kot, Poland and the Scandinavian countries were cited as working models of the elective, limited monarchy by proponents of republicanism, while the supporters of absolute monarchy tried to refute their arguments and show that the constitutional arrangements operating in these countries were in fact no different from the “traditional” monarchy. The sixteenth-century treatise De Optimo Senatore by Laurentius Grimalius Goslicius was a special instrument for the pens and ink of the two sides in the English controversy. First published in its original Latin in Venice in 1568, the work must have reached England pretty soon, since we know of two surviving manuscript translations of it into English dated to the 1580s. One of them was published as The Counsellor in 1598. A knowledge of this book persisted in the political awareness of its English readers for the next six decades at least; it appears to have been referred to in the growing climate of political antagonism. After the Restoration in 1660 it was republished in a plagiarised version which in effect produced a completely reversed picture of Goslicius’ original postulates without quoting his name or the source of the text. Although this was by no means the end of the Ideal Senator’s singular career in the political culture of English-speaking countries, and Goslicius went on to earn another English translation in the eighteenth century and thereafter enjoy a peculiar afterlife in the United States in the twentieth century, the early stages of the book’s presence in England are a fascinating focus for research on English-Polish cultural relations and republican ideas in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
W 1919 roku historyk polskiej nauki i edukacji Stanisław Kot pisał, iż w angielskim konflikcie konstytucyjnym z pierwszej połowy XVII wieku – rozgrywającym się nie tylko na polach bitew, ale również i w wojnie na pamflety pomiędzy zwolennikami parlamentu, okrągłymi głowami a zwolennikami króla, kawalerami – strony konfliktu zwykły zwracać się do europejskich przykładów możliwych modeli ustroju państwa, za którymi się opowiadały. Według Kota, Polska i kraje skandynawskie były przytaczane przez zwolenników republikanizmu jako sprawnie funkcjonujące modele ustroju monarchii elekcyjnej i ograniczonej, z kolei zwolennicy monarchii absolutnej usiłowali obalić ich argumenty i wykazać, że rozwiązania konstytucyjne stosowane w tych państwach w rzeczywistości nie różnią się wcale od formy monarchii „tradycyjnej”. Szesnastowieczny traktat De optimo senatore autorstwa Wawrzyńca Goślickiego okazał się być specjalnym narzędziem dla pisarzy po obu stronach konfliktu. Wydane po raz pierwszy po łacinie w Wenecji w 1568 roku, dzieło to musiało dotrzeć do Anglii dość wcześnie, ponieważ wiadomo nam, że zachowały się dwa tłumaczenia tego manuskryptu na język angielski – datowane są one na lata 80-te XVI wieku. Jeden z nich został wydany w 1598 roku jako The Counsellor. Znajomość tej książki utrzymywała się w świadomości politycznej jej angielskich czytelników przynajmniej przez kolejne sześćdziesiąt lat; wydaje się, że odnoszono się do niej w atmosferze narastających antagonizmów politycznych. Po Restauracji Stuartów w 1660 roku traktat został opublikowany po raz kolejny, tym razem w splagiatowanej wersji, która w rezultacie przedstawia zupełnie inny obraz oryginalnych postulatów Goślickiego, nie przytaczając jego nazwiska ani źródła tekstu. Pomimo że nie oznaczało to wcale końca kariery rozprawy „O senatorze doskonałym” w kulturze politycznej krajów anglojęzycznych – Goślicki doczekał się kolejnego angielskiego przekładu w XVIII wieku, w związku z czym doświadczył swoistego życia po śmierci w Stanach Zjednoczonych w XX wieku – początkowe etapy obecności tej książki w Anglii stanowią fascynujący przedmiot badań na temat relacji kulturowych i wymiany idei republikańskich pomiędzy Anglią a Polską w XVI i XVII wieku.
1919 schrieb Stanislaw Kot, ein hervorragender polnischer Kulturhistoriker mit einem Faible für die Geschichte der polnischen Wissenschaft und Bildung, dass der englische konstitutionelle Konflikt zwischen Royalisten und Roundheads aus der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts nicht nur auf den Schlachtfeldern sondern auch mit dem Feder in der Publizistik ausgefochten worden war – als ein Krieg der Pamphlete, deren Autoren eine Lanze für die tragfähigen staatspolitischen Modelle in Europa brachen, in denen die Verfassung als Staatsform eingeführt worden war. Kot zufolge galten Polen und die skandinavischen Länder in den Augen der Anhänger des Republikanismus’ als flagrante Beispiele für die eingeschränkte Monarchie, während die Verfechter der monarchistischen Staatsform die Argumente ihrer Gegner zu widerlegen und nachzuweisen versuchten, dass sich in jenen Ländern die verfassungsmäßige Ordnung von der „traditionellen“ Monarchie kaum unterscheidet habe. Die aus dem 16. Jahrhundert stammende Abhandlung De Optimo Senatore von Laurentius Grimalius Goslicius (Goślicki) wurde durch die beiden Seiten in der englischen Kontroverse gerne aufgegriffen und in der eigenen Sache in zahlreichen Publikationen zitiert. In seiner originellen lateinischen Fassung wurde sie zunächst im Jahre 1568 in Venedig veröffentlicht. Doch ziemlich rasch muss sie nach England gelangt sein, da man zwei Manuskripte, bereits auf die 1580-er Jahre datiert und ins Englische übersetzt, kennt. Eins von ihnen erschien im Jahre 1598 unter dem Tittel Der Berater. Die dort gebündelten Ideen entfalteten auf das politische Bewusstwein seiner Leser, mindestens für die nächsten sechs Jahrzehnte, ihre Wirkung – dazu in der Atmosphäre des zunehmenden Antagonismus. Nach der Restauration im Jahre 1660 wurde das Buch in einer Plagiat-Version neu aufgelegt, welche die ursprünglichen Ideen von Goslicius, ohne Angabe seines Namens und der Herkunft des Textes, in das Gegenteil verkehrte. Dies markierte keinesfalls das Ende der einzigartigen Karriere von De Optimo Senatore in der politischen Kultur der englischsprachigen Länder. Das Werk wurde im 18. Jahrhundert nochmals ins Englische übersetzt, um im 20. Jahrhundert in den USA wieder seine Wiedergeburt zu feiern. Die ersten Phasen der Präsenz des Buches in England fungieren allerdings als eine faszinierende Periode für die Erforschung der englisch-polnischen kulturellen Beziehungen und der republikanischen Ideen des 16. und des 17. Jahrhunderts.

Tekst stanowi próbę analizy kluczowych założeń projektu teoretycznego Rity Felski, przedstawionego w książce Uses of Literature, przetłumaczonej na język polski jako Literatura w użyciu. Refleksje amerykańskiej badaczki, skoncentrowane wokół zagadnień estetyki odbioru i stanowiące polemikę z kluczową dla współczesnych badań literackich hermeneutyką podejrzeń oraz teorią krytyczną, zostają poddane interpretacji na podstawie czterech pojęć: rozpoznanie, oczarowanie, wiedza i szok. Stanowią one różne formy zaangażowania czytelnika w tekst oraz różne sposoby użycia, zastosowania literatury w akcie powszechnej, niespecjalistycznej lektury. Za jeden z najważniejszych elementów projektu Felski uznana zostaje tu próba przełamania elitarności badań literackich oraz ich wykluczającego względem czytelników nieprofesjonalnych charakteru.
This text represents an attempt to analyze the main premises of Rita Felski’s theoretical project presented in her book Uses of Literature, translated into Polish as Literatura w użyciu (Literature in Use). The American scholar’s reflections, focused on problems of reception aesthetic and constituting a polemic with the concept, crucial to contemporary literary theory, of the hermeneutics of suspicion and with critical theory, are here interpreted using the four concepts relied on by Felski in the book: recognition enchantment, knowledge and shock. They constitute various forms of readerly engagement with the text and various forms of use, of applications of literature in practices of everyday, non-specialist reading. This article identifies Felski’s attempt to disrupt the elitism of literary studies and their exclusionary stance toward non-professional readers as one of the most important elements in her project as put forth in the book.

Artykuł stanowi swoisty teoretyczny wstęp do zjawiska artystycznego zwanego liberaturą. Zostaje w nim podjęta jedna z pierwszych prób usytuowania liberatury w ramach tradycji literackiej, jednak bez szczegółowego badania konkretnych odniesień intertekstualnych. Na początku pokrótce przedstawiono zakres znaczeniowy terminu „liberatura”, przyrównując ową formę do innych form artystycznego wyrazu. Następnie zadano kilka kluczowych pytań dotyczących liberatury i wskazano możliwe odpowiedzi. Szkic ma na celu – poprzez postawienie szeregu problemów badawczych – zwrócenie uwagi na konieczność prowadzenia badań teoretycznych nad liberaturą.
The article is aimed to be a theoretical introduction into the artistic phenomenon called liberature. One of the fi rst att empts to locate liberature within literary tradition is made, although without a detailed analysis of specifi c intertextual references. In the beginning, the scope of the notion of “liberature” is presented and compared to other forms of artistic expression. Subsequently, several key questions concerning liberature are asked and possible answers are indicated. The purpose of the essay is – through pointing to some of the research problems – to draw academics’ att ention to the need for a theoretical research on liberature.

The aim of the paper is to present the history of the Moscow Linguistic Circle whose membershave laid the foundations for themodern, linguistic-oriented literary theory since 1915. The goal of the thesis is to follow the process of establishing the literary theory as an autonomous scientific discipline with its specific research subject, appropriate tools, and terminology. The case of the Circle illustrates that the scientific intuitions of young scholars from Moscow were often ahead of many trends in the twentieth century humanities (e.g. structuralism, statistical poetics, urban studies, sociolinguistics). For this reason the discussion on the intellectual heritage of the Moscow Linguistic Circle is also the reinterpretation of the history of the modern literary theory – necessary in the light of the available, yet poorly recognized archival documents.

El autor ha tenido un no poco estimable recorrido como traductor y académico, de modo que ofrece un punto de vista, fruto de sus experiencias que, con todo su componente individual, remite asimismo a una experiencia colectiva; inspirado en el modelo hermenéutico de Georges Steiner, tiene en cuenta un nivel subjetivo, inherente también al trabajo del traductor-académico. Comprende, pues, la situación de la figura del traductor e investigador de literatura en la universidad y en el mercado editorial polaco, así como sus interrelaciones.
The paper presents reflections about the role of a translator in the university. This text is the result of personal experience of a translator and university professor. The reflection according to the hermeneutic model of Georges Steiner, therefore based on the subjective of the translator-academic, analyses the situation of the translator and researcher of literature in the university and in the Polish publishing market, as well as their interrelationships.

The main emphasis of the article is on the genological analysis of liberature, characterised as the “total literature,” and proposed by Zenon Fajfer in 1999. The argument consists of three layers. Firstly, the author discusses the terms in which one can speak of liberature as a literary movement. This thesis, however, remains highly problematic, since it entails an unclear relation between liberature understood as a pioneering project (inaugurated by Zenon Fajfer and Katarzyna Bazarnik), and an element within the greater historical perspective, inspired by such “proto-liberary” writers as William Blake, George Herbert or Stephané Mallarmé. Secondly, liberature is theorised as an independent genre, which has emerged due to the increasing value of the formal and material dimensions of literary texts. Finally, bearing in mind the intersection of the semantics and the materiality of the medium taking place in “liberary” works, the author poses the problem of their ontological hybridity. As the article points out, in this case, liberature, with its ephemeral, singular and heterogeneous texts, may be regarded as the system consisting solely of differences.
Głównym punktem zainteresowania niniejszego artykułu jest genologiczna analiza liberatury, terminu zaproponowanego przez Zenona Fajfera w 1999 roku i zjawiska opisywanego jako "literatura totalna". Wywód składa się z trzech części. Najpierw, autorka rozważa, w jakim stopniu możemy mówić o liberaturze jako ruchu literackim. Teza ta jest jednak wysoce problematyczne, ponieważ zakłada niejasny związek między liberaturą rozumianą jako pionierski projekt (rozpoczęty przez Zenona Fajfera i Katarzynę Bazarnik) oraz element szerszej historycznej panoramy, zainspirowany przez takich "proto-liberatów", jak William Blake, George Herbert czy Stephané Mallarmé. Następnie, liberatura jest rozpatrywana jako niezależny gatunek, wyrosły dzięki rosnącej wartości formalnego i materialnego wymiaru dzieła literackiego. W końcu, autorka podnosi problem ontologicznej hybrydyczności dzieł liberackich, mając na uwadze przecinanie się semantyki i materialności medium charakterystyczne dla tych dzieł. Jak wskazuje, liberatura i jej efemeryczne, osobliwe i heterogeniczne wytwory, w tym wypadku, mogą być rozpatrywane jako system składający się wyłącznie z różnic.

Can the subaltern speak? – asked Gayatri Spivak. Who gives permission to speak? Who, and if at all, listens? The researcher introduces categories of speaking and listening, supremely useful forresearching literature. This article analyses, in this regard, the books of contemporary Germanliterature which are accounts of journeys to Poland. Of importance here is the lack of knowledgeof the Polish language among the travellers and its impact on the character, contents and credibility of the coverage. Prolific relevant material for research is provided by the most contemporary German literary traveller who has not been scientifically explored: Petra Reski, Ein Land soweit, 2000; Tina Stroheker, Polnisches Journal. Artykuł stawia sobie za cel wykazanie, że we współczesnej literaturze anglojęzycznej wyodrębnić można tradycję, którą cechuje specyficzne przywiązanie do rzeczy, w wielu aspektach zbieżne z dociekaniami prowadzonymi przez przedstawicieli filozofii zwróconej ku przedmiotom (object-oriented philosophy). Pewne aspekty twórczości omawianych poetów – Gerarda Manleya Hopkinsa, Seamusa Heaneya i Jorie Graham – można interpretować jako zwrot ku rzeczom, głównie ze względu na przywiązanie tych autorów do konkretu i szczegółu, co nie powstrzymuje ich jednak przed rozwijaniem swoich zainteresowań w pełnoprawną spekulację metafizyczną. W tym wymiarze, postantropocentryczna filozofia spod znaku realizmu spekulatywnego, a zwłaszcza myśl Grahama Harmana, dostarcza narzędzi konceptualnych pozwalających ująć zagadnienie „istności rzeczy” w perspektywie nowoczesnej, radykalnie zdemokratyzowanej ontologii posthumanistycznej. Krytyka automatyzmów językowych i poznawczych nie jest tu jednak ujęta w kategoriach „śmierci podmiotu”, ale raczej otwiera pole do rozważań nad istotnym miejscem estetyki, a zwłaszcza funkcji metafory
This paper aims to show that within contemporary English-language poetry it is possible to discern a tradition characterized by a specific attachment to things, which in many ways runs parallel to the investigations of philosophers representing object-oriented philosophy. Certain aspects of poems by authors discussed here – Gerard Manley Hopkins, Seamus Heaney and Jorie Graham – can be interpreted as a turn towards objects, mainly due to the devotion of these poets to particulars and details, which nevertheless does not hinder their further explorations of objects and things, often leading to full-blown metaphysical speculation. In this sense, the post-anthropocentric philosophy of speculative realism, especially the thought of Graham Harman, supplies conceptual tools allowing to grasp the “thingness” from the perspective of a modern, democratic post-human ontology. However, such criticism of automatism in language and cognition is not reduced here to the “death of the subject,” but rather serves as means of further opening the field for consideration, especially regarding the important function of aesthetics and the role of a metaphor.

A meta-structuralist trap: Periodisation and Jan Mukařovský’s structuralismThe aim of this article is to show some methodological traps connected with the common tendency for periodisation of phenomena or processes in research, basing on the example of secondary literature about Czech structuralism, especially Jan Mukařovský’s theory. Zrekonstruowane zostają kształtowane w tych opracowaniach narracje, których ładunek symboliczny ukierunkowuje – często nadmiernie – sposób myślenia o dziedzictwie szkoły praskiej oraz o Janie Mukařovskim, co może wpływać na interpretacje jego refleksji literaturoznawczej i estetycznej.
