Opis:
The paper presents and discusses artefacts associated with literacy discovered in recent years during archaeological excavations carried out in the Old Town area in Stargard. These artefacts are represented by styluses. They were classified into three groups, within which further characteristic types were distinguished. The artefacts’ analysis may allow for the development of some surmises concerning their provenance. Some of the styluses (group I and styluses of the ‘S/Z’ type) probably originates from north Germany, where the Hanseatic League was created. The other artefacts may be the remains of a local manufacturing. In addition, styluses complete the knowledge of literacy in medieval Stargard. Findings from the former Augustinian monastery prove literacy amongst monks and may be the material remains of a monastic school.

Opis:
This article aims to examine and make recommendations to the initial assessment procedures in Adult Education context in the United Kingdom. Teachers and learners are constantly making opinions about their development, and formative assessment is one of the tools used to recognise it. In Adult Education, in addition to formative assessment, learners are expected to undergo initial assessment, testing their level of knowledge/abilities in Language, Literacy or Numeracy. Within the Adult Education context, there are several initial assessment methods available. However, it is the providers who decide which methods are most appropriate for their learners, as different methods may be appropriate in different areas. This research project focuses on an Adult Education provider based in the Midlands, United Kingdom, and offers findings that test and sometimes refute the current theory about initial assessment. Two research methods were employed to achieve the aim and objectives. Firstly, secondary data was researched. Secondly, the qualitative primary data was collected using in-depth focus groups. The research included both practitioners and learners who either conducted or experienced needs analysis processes in the adult learning context. The findings and recommendations of this article propose the use of a more ethical and reliable way of conducting initial assessment in the Adult and Community Learning context.

Opis:
The purpose of the article: the aim of the article is to present the essence of personal finance management using modern financial technologies. The paper seeks to answer the question of the impact financial literacy and the growth of the fintech solutions have on personal financial management. Methodology: the analysis leads to an answer to the question of which determinants have an impact on consumers' financial decisions and what remote tools the market offers. The paper hypothesizes that the intensification of educational activities tailored to each age group by institutions offering financial services may influence the greater use of modern tools in the process of personal finance management. Theoretical considerations are based on an in-depth query of literature on the subject. Research and financial experimentation in the field of financial knowledge and skills are presented. The secondary empirical material is used to analyze the development of the FinTech industry. Results: The effectiveness of financial education is observed only in specific financial behaviors. The financial industry is shaped by recipients, who instead of financial education, look e.g. financial coaching for a specific problem at different stages of their lives. Changes in population structure (aging population) and a large group of customers from disadvantaged groups (e. i. seniors, disabled people) require the development of new, matched strategies by banks and financial services providers. Too much self-confidence and a low level of consumer knowledge of cybersecurity is becoming a challenge for modern financial technologies.
Przedstawiono badania i eksperymenty finansowe w zakresie wiedzy i umiejętności finansowych. Do analizy w zakresie rozwoju branży FinTech wykorzystano wtórne materiały empiryczne.

Aim. This research study aims to examine the role and activities of key stakeholders in Slovakia who participate in non-formal education activities focused on the issue of critical thinking in relation to media communication. The aim was to gain an overview of the ways and means by which these actors address their target groups and what conceptual approaches they use to increase the level of media literacy at the national level. Methods. Framework analysis of secondary data on Slovak subjects whose non-formal educational activities and tools focus on the issue of critical thinking, disinformation and fake news by increasing the level of media and information literacy of various target groups. Results. The analysis of secondary data showed that representatives of various stakeholders in Slovakia offer different categories of projects and activities to increase the level of media and information literacy of various target groups. The obtained results indicate that the most active providers of non-formal education activities are in the sector of non-governmental organisations and think tanks. Our analysis also aimed to examine what types of educational activities organisations provide. The most significant representation is static online content (various types of educational content available through the website). Conclusions. The presented research results suggest that in terms of the position of key actors, the ways of their involvement in non-formal education processes are sufficiently diversified. They use a wide range of implementation concepts and models to develop critical thinking through non-formal learning methods for different target groups.

The aim of this study is to present the selected findings of a research into the cooperation of The News Agency of the Slovak Republic with individual types of schools in the Slovak Republic, as well as to create a systematic overview of the current state and trends in this area. We have decided to examine the topic and illustrate its relation to individual types of schools in Slovakia as, within the conditions of the Slovak Republic, it still remains an unexplored area. This is one of the first comprehensive research tasks in Slovakia, which attempts to answer the questions concerning press agencies and schools within the context of media literacy development. The aim of this study is to analyze the cooperation of The News Agency of the Slovak Republic with individual types of school in Slovakia over the period of 2012-2016. We focus on the quantitative and qualitative analyses of secondary data created in the reviewed period within the framework of this cooperation. The second aim of the study is to present the results of research carried out at primary and elementary schools, the aim of which was to find out about the ways educational institutions utilize the services of the press agency within the concept of learning-by-doing when teaching media education. The research sample consisted of 2,164 elementary schools and 794 secondary schools from all regions of the Slovak Republic. We addressed these schools with an 11-item questionnaire examining the quantitative and qualitative aspects of cooperation with the public service News Agency of the Slovak Republic. At the same time, we analyzed the data created within this cooperation over the years 2012-2016. The news service provided by The News Agency of the Slovak Republic represents a tool used at Slovak primary schools, especially in the preparation of school media, as well as at teaching media education and other subjects. Nevertheless, the intensity of its use is undersized and there are still quite a number of schools that do not use this valuable service in their educational activities at all.

The paper addresses the issue of explanatory journalism, which is becoming an increasingly popular and important form of communication in times flooded by verified information as well as misinformation and hoaxes. The study is of a theoretical character and critically evaluates knowledge from this area, placing emphasis on digitalization of journalism that has brought new communication instruments and platforms, thus increasing demands on information literacy and media education of a recipient. This phenomenon resulted in the establishment of several media projects aimed mainly at explaining complex terms or phenomena in a simple and comprehensive way or at interconnecting high-ranking state officials with influential businessmen. In the text, the authors address the role and status of explanatory journalism, its potential in relation to investigative journalism and data journalism - areas and topics that are urgent and beneficial for our society but are often difficult to comprehend for a reader due to their technicality and complexity.

Mass media, and especially digital media, have become an important tool of literacy and have increased their use in classrooms for educational purposes. This is of great interest in scientific literacy and Brossard and Shanahan (2006) developed an instrument to evaluate the understanding of scientific terms and basic science concepts. In this quantitative study we analyse the relationship between Spanish digital mass media and scientific literacy in pre-service primary teachers (N = 189). Results showed that these university students have a term knowledge level lower than the one found by Brossard and Shanahan in the USA. On the other hand, conceptual knowledge was not correlated at all to the term frequency in the Spanish digital newspapers considered. The conclusions suggest that participants do not use digital newspapers to improve their science education so a change in students’ use of those digital media from ludic to educational purposes is needed.

Seventeen workshops on STEAM and Media Literacy, involving 500 children aged 3-10, their families and other community members, in a pandemic context, was the end result of the third phase of the ‘Digital Citizenship Academy’. This community-based action research project began in early 2015, in a Lisbon neighbourhood of Portugal. The workshops were planned, implemented, monitored and assessed by 29 teachers during an online training initially planned to be developed on site. Despite the Covid-19 outbreak, teachers implemented strategies to overcome the lack of resources and autonomy of many students, especially younger ones, and the training focus remained on the production of scientific, artistic, technological, but also media content. The workshops allowed the creation of media and STEAM products primarily focused on the arts, but in which science, technology, engineering and mathematics were present. Results point to the fact that STEAM projects gain in relevance when associated with Media Literacy activities, and vice versa. Although there is a general feeling that the situation resulting from the pandemic prevented the achievement of more significant results, the training course was suitable to pedagogical practices, provided an opportunity for sharing of experiences, practices and ideas, fostered cooperation and interdisciplinary, and resulted in useful resources.
