Opis:
The article deals with an exegetical misunderstanding revolving around the purported existence of two different ways of reckoning the hours of the day in antiquity, and consequently in the Gospels: an alleged Roman mode (in John’s Gospel) and the Jewish one (in the Synoptics). Among Johannine scholars a disagreement exists over the issue of which system was embraced by the Evangelist. While the majority claim that John followed the known Jewish system of reckoning hours, a minority argue that another, distinctively Roman system was being employed in the FG. In its first part, the article reviews extrabiblical ancient literature to demonstrate that, while the Romans in fact had two systems of marking the beginning of the day (dies civilis, legitimus – starting at midnight, and dies naturalis, verus – starting at sunrise), the manner of reckoning the hours of the day (and the night) was precisely the same for the Romans as for the Jews. In the second part, both systems are applied to four specific Johannine references to the hours of the day (1:39; 4:6; 4:52; and 19:14) in order to assess which method of reckoning the hours better suits the literary context of each narrative. While this internal analysis of the Johannine text is inconclusive, our assessment of the external, extrabiblical evidence points to the conclusion that the ancients, including John the Evangelist, used only one, nearly universal manner of reckoning the hours, i.e. beginning from sunrise.

John Dewey was arguably the most influential philosopher of education in the twentieth century. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the timeliness of Dewey’s philosophy of education for us today with respect to the organic relationship between ethics and education that Dewey saw, by showing the centrality of education for Dewey’s philosophy, that is, how for him, indeed, all philosophy is philosophy of education; further, how all education is moral philosophy; and hence how all philosophy pertains to moral education. Central to Dewey’s understanding of both education and ethics is his notion of ‘growth’: education creates the conditions for students’ ongoing growth, and the promotion of growth defines ‘ethics.’ Dewey’s message is an important one for us today when there are such strong tendencies to reduce education to mere technical training: such training, for Dewey, is neither education nor ethical.

The present article is an attempt to look at selected Romantic poems which concentrate on the image of the nightingale. Starting from Charlotte Smith’s sonnets and continuing with poems by other writers of the period, I will try to trace the link between nature and poetic convention in English Romanticism. While some of the nightingales which sing in Romantic poetry seem deeply symbolic, other forsake poetic tradition and stubbornly persist in their birdy nature, resisting descriptions in terms of melancholia or woe. Nevertheless, the fate of Philomela, whose sad story of violation identifies the nightingale with loss, suffering and poetic creation, still remains an important context for Romantic nightingale poems.

The paper examines emotional communities in early modern English drama, specifically interludes by John Heywood and John Bale. It explores the connections between emotion and religion, and seeks to uncover whether and how emotionality changes according to the politically acceptable religious doctrine – particularly in the time of Protestant reformation under Henry VIII Tudor – and how these changes are expressed in the early sixteenth century English interludes by a Catholic (Heywood) and a Protestant (Bale) author. This paper considers early modern texts of culture which have not been researched as broadly as the drama of the later English Renaissance period (such as works by William Shakespeare or Christopher Marlowe), and, drawing upon the concept of “emotional communities” introduced by Barbara Rosenwein, additionally offers insights into an ongoing discussion on emotions in history.

John Donne’s Devotions upon Emergent Occasions is a very difficult work to translatebecause it is abundant in alchemical terms and imagery the contemporary reader may hardlyunderstand as alchemy is long a dead language code. Unfortunately, that imagery oftenrefers to a specific theological background and it should be elucidated either by means ofclever translation or by virtue of footnotes or commentary. Otherwise, grasping the propermeaning of the entire Donne’s work may be impossible. Russian translation of Donne’sDevotions by Anton Nesterov is perhaps the best existing attempt to render the original textwith all its intricacy into language other than English. However, there are some treacherousand fascinating passages in Devotions upon Emergent Occasions Niestierow mistranslatedbecause he did not fully understand the alchemical background they refer to.

This essay invites a recovery of “wildness” as a way for philosophers to respond to the present moment which includes: an ongoing global pandemic, economic uncertainty, increasing cultural division, and a crisis in higher education broadly that persistently threatens the status of philosophy programs. Drawing on the American thinkers John William Miller and John Dewey and elaborating on their own philosophical defenses of liberal education, I propose a turn to wildness and freedom in our pedagogies through active and embodied philosophical pedagogy, including field philosophy. I offer two examples of courses that begin to invite wildness into the process of philosophical inquiry. The aim of this essay is to consider how wildness in teaching and learning and in doing philosophy might make philosophy stay alive.

The article focuses on the understanding of sin in John 5:14, as well as the relationship between sin and sickness presented in this verse. It provides a thorough status quaestionis on both of these issues. After examining various hypotheses regarding the meaning of sin in John 5:14, the Johannine notion of sin as unbelief is expounded as the most convincing. This sin encompasses the past, present, and future life of the healed man. Thus, contrary to the exegetical opinio communis, the cause-and-effect relationship between sin and sickness does not apply to John 5:14. In light of this explanation, the messages of John 5:14 and 9:2–3 do not contradict each other. Jesus’ words in 5:14, intentionally pronounced in the temple, should be understood as an invitation to follow him in faith.

Opis:
It is important to specify terms – the truth is conformity of a word to a thing or an event, whereas a lie is making the truth unavailable to someone who has the right to it. John Paul II promoted the essential truth that a man is God’s creation; God knows what is good for his creation; human person is God’s image, then should act in such a manner that the image is clear. Faith has moral dimension-it is moral dimension. It is the source of practical involvement which remains in harmony with faith. The principles of one’s conduct are God’s commandments, whereas individualistic ethics, practised in the spirit of illusory freedom, prevents us from discovering the only certain truth-God. Contemporary crisis of society is that faith is rejected and as a result there is breaking off the essential and constitutive bond between the truth and freedom. In economy we can see that the truth in one’s conduct cannot withstand the style of the present geared towards profit. It is proper that the Church supports profit but the profit cannot be the only regulator of a company’s life. There are still human and moral factors. Economic growth should respect human values. Freedom in the economic and social area cannot be torn out from the truth about a human being. The meeting of the Church and the workers’ movement in 1980 showed that it is possible to demand ethics in economy in the name of the truth of a human being-then the civilisation of love is created with its main principles: a person before a thing, more important to be than to have, ethics before technology, mercy before justice, defeat evil with good. Problems existing in this area cannot be disregarded. The matter is important and urging – otherwise, as Pope Leo XIII said in the Encyclical Rerum Novarum, delaying would make evil incurable.

The article presents history of liberty in the past and contemporary liberal thought. This article grounds that creators of liberalism passed by a long way to define precisely the phenomenon of liberty. When creators were closer to the present day, they tried to separate liberty from metaphysics and morality with reference to the ideals of democracy. However, they confused the cult of equality with the liberty to show that the truth always must be at liberty’s service. But the liberty should be understood like a competence to realize person’s rights. Not till then, liberalism will conceal the historic and present–time demons.

John Keats often describes poetic creation through an ingestion metaphor and figures the poet and the act of poetic creation within the framework of a healthy ecosystem. The motif of wholesome nourishment appears, in particular, in Keats’s poems of nostalgic retreat into the Middle Ages, where the poet’s present-day concerns are couched in medieval-like literary idiom and imagery. Artykuł analizuje mediewalizm Johna Keatsa, angielskiego poety okresu Romantyzmu,z perspektywy ekokrytyki.

In the teaching of John Paul II’s the need of solidarity globalization is particularly stressed out as well as that of humanization of globalization processes. With the aim of doing it, one should be guided by unchanging social values: the truth, freedom, justice, solidarity, subsidiarity, love. The globalization has two faces: ▪ the benefits which it brings to the world, individual countries and its main beneficiaries, that is international corporations. ▪ negative effects which the developing countries and all people of the world experience (climatic changes, emission of harmful substances, drug addiction, moral nihilism, gradual decrease of human importance). It happens that complex processes caused by economical globalization make their way towards changing a human being into an element of a market, a bartered good or a factor devoid of meaning for decisive choices. As a consequence, a person may feel annihilated by impersonal mechanisms on a world’s scale and may gradually lose his own identity and personal dignity.

The aim of this paper is to explore what the different answers that might be given to the question about the role of perspective in language – indexical contextualism, nonindexical contextualism, and assessor relativism – amount to, using Perry’s work about thought without designation and thought without representation as our point of departure. In particular, I argue that Perry’s discussion of the possibility of making explicit the parameter on which the truth-value of a certain sentence depends provides us with a useful criterion to distinguish between indexical and nonindexical contextualism. Then, I show that some of MacFarlane’s insights can be seen as a continuation of Perry’s discussion. The most salient outcome of the comparison between Perry’s and MacFarlane’s frameworks will be the distinction between the superficial perspectivality that can be found in sentences like “It is raining” and the irreducible perspectivality that we find in sentences like “Licorice is tasty.” The apparently paradoxical conclusion will be that language is truly perspectival precisely when it does not encode a perspective.

Opis:
The present paper is focused on translation studies. We analyze to what degree the Prologue of the Gospel of John is translatable into selected Polish translations, and to what degree it can be retranslated into Hebrew. What is new in our  approach is the analysis of the inaccuracy of translation of the original text which is apparent in the prototype translation (Ur-translation) of the Vulgate by Jerome. Thanks to the comparison between the Vulgate and Polish translations of the Prologue, and their retranslation into Hebrew, we concluded that they repeat the mistakes of the Vulgate almost automati- cally. When we liberate ourselves from the influence of the Vulgate, we face with yet another difficulty. The Prologue is a text of initiation, and it is translatable according to the dynamie equivalence only for a reader, who was intended by the author of the Gospel of John. For other readers, the Prologue can be translated, morę or less accurately, according to the formal equivalence.

It follows from my studies that a just organization of a firm is rare in times of transformation. Opis:
The topic of this paper is the role of language in creating moral obligation. Drawing upon J. Austin’s and J. Searle’s speech act theory, the author analyzes the power of words to create obligations by using the example of promise-making. She tries to identify the conditions that must be fulfilled for a specific utterance to make a subject morally obligated, and discusses the challenges to Searle’s theory. The author concludes that the performative function of the language can only explain an object dimension of promise-making . Therefore, it is crucial to take a different research perspective to reveal its subjective source.

REASERCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is showing the idea of liberty as inherent in the process of secularization, from which it results; the author appeals to the anthropological thesis drawing its significance from the relational character of the human being as created by God and shows how the secularization destroys this idea of the human person. THE REASERCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: What happens when the liberty is understood as liberation and autonomy towards to God and finally causes result contradictory to the intended one? The author applies the hermeneutic and critical method, referring to the different authors, for example to Henri de Lubac, Romano Guardini, J. Ratzinger, saint John Paul II. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article analysis the problem of the contradiction between liberty and liberation in Catholic thought. The main item in this argumentation is that the liberty should not be understood as liberation towards to God because of the destructive effects of the secularization process in the Catholic doctrine and Church.  REASERCH RESULTS: The liberty understood as an absolute and liberation breaking with the Creator degenerates finally into artifice devoid of rational fundament, in short, of real contents; it is like human epiphenomenon. The new humanism brings the negation and destruction of the human being recognizing his humanity and maturity by breaking with God. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Modernity is the source and the root of the secularization. The idea of liberty devoid of fundament in the human being and the person of God complicates seriously the human coexistence and social life, as admitted once Habermas.

Opis:
In a common reflection, Rococo is associated with the salon and courtly taste and lifestyle of the elite who liked to adorn themselves — as Stanisław Pietraszko wrote — with ‘the jewelery of literature’. The Rococo aesthetics was related to the sweetness of life of the ancien regime. Poems of this style presented moral extravagances of the aristocracy and rich bourgeoisie of the 18th century in different European countries. However, in the course of historical development, Rococo forms and motifs revealed their activist potential. This tendency was gaining momentum at the end of the 18th century and in the first decades of the 19th century. This article, attempts to show the forms of social and political engagement of Rococo literature using the example of three anacreontic poems. The verses by John Thelwall (Anacreontic, 1794) and Adam Mickiewicz (Pieśń Filaretów, 1820) are taken into consideration In each of these texts, the Rococo topoi take on new meanings and testify to the political dimension of the ‘toys in verse’. Symposiastic poetry enters into close relations with Romantic aesthetics. Anacreontics became an attractive genre of ideological expression of poets with democratic and pro-revolutionary inclinations.

History of pilgrimages from Kraków to Jasna GóraDescriptions of worshippers headed from Kraków to the Shrine of Jasna Góra in the city of Częstochowa have been discovered in archives dating back to the 14th century. The early beginnings of this traditions can be linked with religious and political considerations as well as the close proximity of Częstochowa to Kraków. The tradition of pilgrimages to Jasna Góra has been maintained over the centuries despite the loss of independence by Poland as a whole. The anti-Catholic work of Poland’s post-1945 government also did not stem the flow of pilgrims from Kraków to Jasna Góra. The contemporary pilgrimage movement has its roots in the 1970s when a number of new pilgrim organizations came into existence. These included the Cistercian Foot Pilgrimage ( 1972 ), which became the 4 th part of the Kraków Foot Pilgrimage in 1998. The latter had begun in 1981. Another pilgrimage is the Dominican Foot Pilgrimage, which became an independent pilgrimage in 1992 – separate from the Archdiocesan Pilgrimage. The smallest  pilgrimage from Kraków is the Skałka Foot Pilgrimage, which has been active since 1976 and is led by the Pauline Fathers. The pastoral work and pilgrimage activity of John Paul II has also had a strong effect on each of the three pilgrimage movements from Kraków.

Filozofia realistyczna kwestionując idealizm, racjonalizm, konstruktywizm lub solipsystyczny realizm, czyni fundamentalną kwestią autonomię świata względem jego społecznych konstruktów. Tym samym Margaret Archer interpretuje weberowską koncepcję wpływu historycznych systemów religijnych na ukonstytuowanie kapitalizmu jako przykład cyklu morfogenetycznego, konsekwentnie rugując indywidualizm metodologiczny i metodologiczny kolektywizm z nauk społecznych, i jednoznacznie odrzucając wtręty konstruktywistyczne Webera. Metateoria Margaret Archer wpisuje w istocie klasyczny spór wokół metod poznania w naukach społecznych (Methodenstreit) i w znacznym stopniu jest współczesną wariacją a właściwie rozwinięciem zasadniczego konfliktu w pojmowaniu relacyjności nauk społecznych (szerzej humanistycznych "nauk o duchu" - Geistwissenschaften) do nauk przyrodniczych (Naturwissenschaften). Nawiazując do dylematów swoich poprzedników, Margaret Archer uznaje elementy ich teorii prowadzące do ukonstytuowania opinii o nieredukowalności poznawanego świata, ale akceptuje neokantowską, fenomenologiczną, hermeneutyczną, etnometodologiczną i interpretatywną wątpliwość w zakresie obiektywności instrumentarium poznawczego umożliwiającego "uchwycenie" aspektów rzeczywistości. W podejściu morfogenetycznym Margaret Archer ujawnia się z kolei popperyzm podkreślający analityczną funkcję poziomu kulturowego w poznaniu przyczynowym. Archer przekształca koncepcję Poppera w duchu marksistowskiego funkcjonalizmu Dawida Lockwooda dążącego do integracji systemów społecznych z ideą konfliktu społecznego.

Opis:
The early Christian Church did not take up any revolutionary action aiming at reforming or abolishing the so much bound with the Roman society structure slavery. Instead, it worked out a new ‘theoretical’ and characterized by humanism attitude, which is reflected and strengthened by John Chrysostom. The ‘golden mouthed’ admits that slavery is a binding and allowed by God’s Providence state, and he accepts the power of a master over a belonging to the Christian family slave. A slave should not rebel against his unjust situation but try to serve his master and family as if he actually saved his Saviour Redeemer. And that is because slaves are in nature free people and as any other people are the children of the same God. That is why he demands treating a slave as a human being and respecting his dignity. Also, he suggests a new notion of a slave being a good and obedient to his master person since, as he believes, a change in the present negative stereotype will contribute to some improvement in the existential situation, or in some time may lead to the reform of the social-economic state system.

The paper presents the results of studies of epitaphs for children up to almost eight years of age from the city of Rome (3rd-4th c. – B. Stawoska-Jundziłł, Vixit cum parentibus. Children aged under seven in Christian families from Rome of 3rd-4th c., Bydgoszcz 2008) in comparison with the views of John Chrysostom on the upbringing of small children. The content of over 2000 children from Rome demonstrates a high status of even the youngest offspring in the Christian families from this city. The founders cared for their religious „endowment”, bestowed their love on them and tried to remember them as members of the family even if they had died after a few days or months. It was unquestionably believed that small children are immediately saved, go to God and commune with the saints. Thanks to this the family could hope for their support and prayers. Whereas, John Chrysostom only casually mentions small children and, what is more, ambivalently: on one hand presenting them on the basis of thorough observations of their behavior and looking after them and on the other hand as mindless creatures, a harbinger of valuable person following the Stoics e.g. Seneca. As far as the most important for me question of the death of small children is concerned he takes a stand similar to that of the Romans. The children are really without sins (they did not commit them consciously) so God shall accept them only through the hardships of illness and death. Now they are asleep (unlike in the studied epitaphs) but they will rise from the dead and join their parents. Thus, the despair after their death is pointless; God decided the best for them. The difference lies in the fact that the founders of epitaphs more decidedly see the perfection of posthumous existence of even the smallest children who there reach their full maturity whereas John does not seem to be interested in this issue since he directs his teaching mostly to maturing and mature Christians in the earthly life and not in the beyond.

The paper is a preliminary outline of the history of views on the teaching of speech to children in ancient thinkers, especially Aristotle, Romans from the times of Republic and Empire, as well as the Church Fathers, especially Western, including Augustine in order to determine what John Chrysostom wrote and said on that subject. All the above-mentioned were not really interested in teaching speech to infants and children but in the physiology of this phenomenon (especially Aristotle) and creating the most favorable environment for the shaping of speech through the selection of nannies and child minders. There were no attempts, as Augustine aptly wrote, to teach speech consciously; it was the child himself that had to associate the sound with its material, meaningful background through observations and repeating experiences. What is more, both moral philosophers and Church Fathers described in a friendly manner (also Chrysostom) talking to children using a special, childlike language since it pleased and still pleases adults, although spoils the way children speak. The Classic Antiquity, which took care about the proper speech and promoted (like Church Fathers) rhetoric in everyday life and science, forgot about the basics, the process of creating speech, which resulted from depreciation of the first stage of children’s life, condemned to contacts with slaves – nannies. It was only the school age that stirred up stronger emotions but, as some moral philosophers wrote, children already had speech defects, among others, because of parental consent for the language deprivation.

Opis:
John Chrysostom, bishop of Constantinople, in his works as one of the first Church Fathers, spoke a lot about marriage. First of all, Christian matrimony, according to his teaching, was the unity of the bodies from whom the communion of two person – man and woman – follows. The unity and uniqueness were the essential features of the matrimony. Only true love, which comes from God, can build true unity of husband and wife. That’s why Chrysostom calls matrimony „sacrament (mysterion) of love”. Greek word „mysterion” has in John Chrystosom’s works two meanings: mystery of marriage and mysterious activity of God. Because Holy God is the creator of matrimony it can be called holy and sacred.

Opis:
Like many others Church fathers John Chrysostom considers virginity preferable to marriage. At the same time, being an interpreter of Saint Paul’s doctrine, he repeats that marriage is a splendid God’s mystery (Ephesians 5, 31-33). That is why he explains to the Christian men what kind of women they have to marry in order to become happy husbands, as well as draws Christian wives’ attention to their duties. According to Chrysostom, a man who seeks a wife should follow example of the servant, sent by Abraham back to his homeland to get a bride for his son, Isaac. First of all, he must aim to find a righteous woman. Bride’s wealth, as well as physical beauty are able to make her husband happy only provided that she lives faithfully serving God. Saint John teaches that God expects married Christian women to submit to their husbands, to live a chaste life, to take care of household while the man is about his public business, to be modest in their appearance and manners. Many times he sharply points out women’s vices and faults. On the other hand he holds in high esteem their virtues and sensibility, as well as demands that husbands should love their wives, treat them with respect, be loyal to them. Analyzing female characters pictured by John Chrysostom, we often come across the types well-known through ancient Greek poetry.

Opis:
Unlike the dominant but simplified view of previous scholarship that Chrysostom stands in opposition to Roman property law, his attitude towards Roman law concerning property ownership is quite complicated. Insisting on the belief that things are created for common use and God is the ultimate owner of the world, Chrysostom denies various modes of property acquisition approved by Roman law (inheritance, thesauri inventio, and specificatio ) to be righteous, but when clarifying the limited and inferior human right over things in comparison with that of God, he never hesitates to use the Roman legal terms χρῆσις and δεσποτεία. Moreover, based on the conviction that the worldly economic order derives from divine providence, he confines his enumeration of the things shared in common mainly to the Res communes and Res publicae or Res universitatis under Roman law and persuades his audience to help those in need with the wealth temporarily under their stewardship. As a rhetorical strategy, Chrysostom’s use and manipulation of Roman legal language and thought aimed to promote almsgiving

Subject and purpose of work: This paper presents origins and reasons underlying formulation of the theory of state interventionism in the free-market mechanism of economy. Broad view on classical economic theory from contemporary situation is the main aim of the work. Materials and methods: Author’s as well as other economists’ opinions have been employed to elucidate the essence and meaning of the concept of interventionism. A limited scope of information and the lack of dominance of assessment in shaping market equilibrium as well as the role of global demand and full employment have been indicated in this paper. Results: J.M. Keynes argued that a state should play an active role in regulating the economy and should be able to make quick intervention decisions. Beside the theory proposed by J.M. Keynes, this paper outlined views by P. Krugman, A. Marshall and other economists considered as Neo Keynesians. Conclusions: Comparison between liberal and intervention trends in economics leads to the concept of social market economy and contemporary studies on public economics.
Przedmiot i cel pracy: Praca przedstawia genezę i uwarunkowania powstania teorii interwencjonizmu państwa w wolnorynkowy mechanizm gospodarki. Dlatego przywołana zostaje zarówno koncepcja amerykańskiego przedstawiciela men’s studies Johna Bly’a, jak i krytyczne podejście Pierre’a Bourdieu.
The text is an analysis of Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break (1991) and its remake of 2015, directed by Ericson Core. The comparison between the two versions illustrates the differences between narration, style, atmosphere and meaning of each, resulting from different attitudes of the filmmakers to genre formulas and conventions governing the presentation of male characters. The idea of a remake can be considered in terms of the category of “imaginative mobility” created by John Urry, who treats all mobility as the core of social life. In the interpretation of each film, it is necessary to refer to social and cultural contexts, including such phenomena as the new spirituality described by Zbigniew Pasek. The extensive analysis of male characters reflects different attitudes of filmmakers to models of masculinity and related images. That is why the author refers to the concept of John Bly (American specialist in men’s studies) and the critical approach of Pierre Bourdieu.

The Gospel according to St. John left its specific imprint on the exposition of the phenomenon of prophecy, expressed in technical terminology – almost reduced to the word prophet (gr. profetes). While in the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus' prophetic status dominates the first part of the narrative before Easter, the situation is quite different in John. The prophetic status of Jesus plays an important role there, but within the structure of an existential initiation. The aim of this study is to emphasize this role.

The formation of the human conscience is a controverted question in both philosophical ethics and moral philosophy. Conscience refers to one’s conception and understanding of the moral good. An especially significant manifestation of the problem of conscience in the 20th and 21st centuries is the impact of ideology on the individual person’s moral sense. This article considers the impact of two 19th century philosophies―Mill’s utilitarianism and Marxism―on contemporary moral thought insofar as the interaction of these two produce a powerful materialist ideology to determine the modern European and American conscience. We then turn to the thought of Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyła), who in his encyclical Veritatis Splendor and in his earlier philosophical writings developed an account of moral truth by which the dangers of materialistic ideology can be overcome. It is argued, with John Paul II, that only in the context of truth can a coherent account of freedom of conscience under the moral law be developed.

John 3:16 is undoubtedly one of the best known and most beloved verses in all of Scripture. At the same time, when ripped from its literary, historical and theological contexts as it so often is, this verse can become merely a pious, sentimental saying bereft of its true, earth-shaking message. Thus this study provides not only an exegetical analysis of the verse, but also the exposition of its various contexts: literary (the interchange between Jesus and Nicodemus on the entrance into the kingdom of God), historical (the destruction of the Jerusalem temple and the worldwide mission of the early Church) and theological (the OT, NT and John’s Gospel concepts of God’s universal love). God’s love for the world, and the salvific mission flowing from it, are most beneficially viewed from a salvation-historical perspective, as the core Trinitarian outreach in which all are called to take part by putting faith in Jesus.

Resulting from his reflections on education and shaped by the idea of pansophism, the phenomenon of Comenius' pedagogical thought for centuries not only had an impact on the development of the subsequent philosophical trends forming the (perennial) educational exemplar but also it indicated the direction of the essential educational reforms. One of the inheri-tors of Comenius' pedagogical visionary was the author of Poêles à tricoter - John Frederic Oberlin. In his archetype of kindergarten, a reflection of Comenius' idea related to the early education can be found, which was included in Informatorium scholae maternae ('On early education'), which Oberlin puts into a language of pedagogical praxis. Comenius' ideas of religious-ethical education, child’s multisided development and education leading to child's readiness to be a pupil were given not only an application character but also an institutional form by Oberlin. Initiated by Oberlin in Ban de la Roche in 1769 on the pages of Poêles à tricoter and referring directly to Comenius' reflections, the educational solutions commenced the new era in the history of education.

Opis:
Słowo, kolor i dźwięk — Johna Goulda Fletchera hybrydowe „Symfonie kolorów” Artykuł podejmuje problematykę złożoności kompozycyjnej poetyckiego cyklu wierszy pt.
The paper undertakes as its subject the problem of complexity in the composition of a cycle of poems called “Colour Symphonies” written by an American modernist poet John Gould Fletcher in the first decades of the twentieth century. The uniqueness of composition of the entire cycle as well as its separate “colour” parts consists in combining visual representations with diverse sonic effects in a joint effort of creating in this way a singular poetic verbal equivalent. Such hybrid-like compound becomes in turn a carrier of emotional states which the poet attempts to render in successive parts of the cycle. Fletcher’s sequence of colour symphonies is a supreme example of modernist hybridity of composition so characteristic for its numerous poetic groups like for example Imagism.

The biweekly magazine, created by Polish journalists, devoted The Pope during the 6 years 33 texts in its paper version and many ones on the internet side. The journalists wrote about many topics connected with John Paul II: the celebrations of the anniversaries of His death, the trial of the beatification, the places which were named after The Pope, the cultural and artistic events which took place to commemorate Him. This topic, hopefully, can be interesting for people in Poland because, firstly, we just celebrate the beatification of John Paul II and, secondly, the magazine is rather unknown in our country and shows a part of everyday life of Polish society in Italy.

Opis:
Apart from a few treatises on the life of women in an extra-marital state and some short speeches about the dignity of Christian women, John Chrysostom did not engage in longer discourses about marriage. Chrysostom expressed himself most broadly on this subject in his commentary to „The First Letter to the Corinthians”. This and over a dozen other utterances by Chrysostom which I found in his writings allow us to suppose that his assessment of the value of the union between a believer and a non-believer is dictated by the realism of the epoch and not by pure dogma. Such a tone of teaching resonates with the moods of the Antioch community, which seethed with the luxuriant life of the most varied religious communities. Here, a non-believer was a partner also in marriage, hence the use of the „Pauline privilege” in order to remove such a one from a marriage would expose Christians to the accusation of a lack of tolerance at the very least. Knowing his community very well, John Chrysostom brings to the foreground the principle that a non-believer in a married couple is a problem between the non-believer and the Lord. Civil law does not make an impediment of this (such was the Roman tradition) and Canon law (the synods of the 4th century) should not make such impediments either. „Your partner’s relations with the Lord”, Chrysostom continually reminds us, „should not decide about the continuation or the dissolution of the marital union”. The „defence” of a spouse from outside the Christian politeia is also an opportunity to obtain new members of this community.

Opis:
The inseparability of marriage in the thoughts of St. John Chrysostom has its base on the fundament of that which is the unification of the spouses, very strong and undisputable, which is a result of the creation act of God and of His establishing. That unity finds its justification also in the mystical unification of Christ and the Church, which even more so points to the lastingness of the communion of the lives of two people joined together by the ties of marriage. The Antiochian, in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Scriptures is aware though of the dangers which are threatening that unity and seeking to undermine the inseparability of the union. They are the sins of lust and the disordered longings which lead to the evil of adultery, and therefore the sin of marital infidelity. This thesis on the inseparability of marriage is confirmed by Christ Himself, who in his teaching shows the agreement, of the initially seemingly to be in disagreement, teachings of the Old and New Law. The meaning of the Christological authority in this argument directed towards Christians was surely meant to strengthen in the faithful the responsibility for the communion of two persons and the care of all – not only spouses – for its inseparability. The words of the Savior also were to accent the actuality of this subject and its timeless meaning.

Opis:
The present article examines the connection between Cage’s politics and aesthetics, demonstrating how his formal experiments are informed by his political and social views. In 4’33’’, which is probably the best il- lustration of Cage’s radical aesthetics, Cage wanted his listeners to appreciate the beauty of accidental noises, which, as he claims elsewhere, “had been dis-criminated against” (Cage 1961d: 109). His egalitarian stance is also reflected in his views on the function of the listener. He wants to empower his listeners, thus blurring the distinction between the performer and the audience. In 4’33’’ the composer forbidding the performer to impose any sounds on the audience gives the audience the freedom to rediscover the natural music of the world. I am arguing that in his experiments Cage was motivated not by the desire for formal novelty but by the utopian desire to make the world a better place to live. He described his music as “an affirmation of life – not an at- tempt to bring order out of chaos nor to suggest improvements in creation, but simply a way of waking up to the very life we’re living, which is so excellent once one gets one’s mind and desires out of its way and lets it act of its own accord” (Cage 1961b: 12).

Opis:
John Locke was an English philosopher, doctor and politician who also contributed to the developmen of educational thinking. His school experiences, as well as those acquired in the role of a teacher, were the impulse behind his deliberations on education. The letters to Edward Clarke, forming an answer to Clarke’s request that he guide his children’s upbringing, provided the opportunity for him to present them. The content that Locke included in his letters was, in time, repeated in Some Thoughts Concerning Education. The ideas on descent and the limits of human cognition presented in his philosophical works are closely related with his views on education. In An Essay Concerning Human Understanding Locke stated that the human mind at the moment of birth is a blank slate (tabula rasa), which through life is filled by experiences. As a result, he attributed much importance to education – it is an integral part of the process of filling the mind with content, and through this shaping the person. Locke stressed that most people are “good or bad, beneficial or not as a result of their education”. He was convinced that there is an unbreakable connection between three areas of education: the moral, mental and physical. Of those three he considered moral education as the most important. He stressed that the aim of education is to guide a person in such a way that enables them to control their aspirations, desires and affections with the mind – and that such skills are the basis of virtue. According to Locke, without virtue and self-discipline it is difficult to act in a reasonable way. He recognised people’s individualism, so he recommended that the methods of education should be fitted to the abilities of the child. He called for the replacement of orders and prohibitions with explanation, habituation, understanding and experience. A child needs to be taught, among other things, to appreciate truth, honesty, respect for others, kindness and restraint from cruelty towards people and animals. According to Locke, this should lead to correct shaping of moral character.

Western society and its fi ction faces the overwhelming problem of masculinity and its modeling. The era of war, capitalism, the challenges of feminism aff ect the ideology within which men are constructed both as individuals and as a social group. John Fowles’s fi ction tackles the crucial issue of male power and control as masculinity is put to test and trial in his 1965 novel The Magus. The defi nition of manhood, male virility and social respectability of the period shape the 20th century male characters in Fowles’s fi ction. This paper aims to explore how John Fowles investigates the role of masculinity and power myths on the personal level of relationship and a wider scale of war and capitalism in The Magus. Notions of masculinity off er the protagonist, Nicholas Urfe, a sense of a superiority and power over women in the course of the novel. Among the goals of the project is to examine the mythical journey of Nicholas, which becomes a testing ground of his masculinity and maturity, as well his trial and ‘disintoxication,’ which is intended to help him to reevaluate his life and his relationships with women. One of the issues posed is whether Nicholas Urfe is reborn as a new man at the end of his search for redemption or if he remains the same egotistic, ‘lone wolf’ as he appears in the beginning of the novel.

This article contains a brief analysis of John Locke’s epistemological views on the moral education of children. Locke believed that, in order to develop, man must be able to think for himself. As regards teaching, Locke advocated shaping a research instinct and independent thinking in children, combining language acquisition with learning about things, shaping intellectual abilities, dispositions and habits that enable further education and acquiring a profession. In the sphere of moral education he recommended developing moral concepts in children using the knowledge about the development of their awareness and based on real examples, stimulating their perceptiveness and cognitive activity in terms of proper conduct.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to sketch out the Chrysostom’s ideal of a wife, on the basis of his homilies delivered in Antioch. In brief, this ideal should be understood as a realization of Christ’s commandment to love God and the neighbor. It is a call to the wife to undertake all necessary actions related to the material and spiritual sphere of a person, which serve not only the good of the individual, the family, but also the good of the society. So, according to Chrysostom’s ideal, the wife should, besides a broadly understood evangelization activity, perform also the function of a „guard of the home“, „guard of the state“, and be a teacher and educator. The realization of such outlined model of perfecting, undoubtedly conducive to many virtues that come into being, as well as assuming their development, requires furthermore a presence of the virtue of humility, modesty, fear of God, and faith in God’s Providence, as indispensable to its realizing; the virtues should be preceded by acquirement of a right hierarchy of values. In other words, the ideal of a wife, postulated by Chrysostom is, as it seems, a care about the, initiated in the sacrament of baptism, unity with God through unceasingly realized and deepened fidelity to Christ’s commandment of love god and neighbor.

The second part of the paper confirms that the state ought to create a solid infrastructure of economy and to find a good balance between different sectors of economic life. The last part of the paper shows that the state ought to interfere sometimes in the economic field, for example, to combat unemployment and poverty, or to protect the family.

Opis:
At the root of the Declaration Dignitatis humanae lies a concept of the American Jesuit, John Cortney Murray. Freedom of religion is the negative liberty, concerned with freedom from the interference by public authorities in religious practice. It is hailed as the foundation of all other liberties and human rights. Murray defined his concept in the context of the American proposition, that is, building a political order characterised by republicanism and democracy. This order is chiefly based on Christian axiology. There is an argument in the USA whether Murray’s project, a kind of christianisation of liberalism, has been successful. Some, like Weigel or Novak, think it has. Others, like Burns, maintain that Murray’s project was based on an erroneous interpretation of the American proposition, and the overinterpretation of the Catholic position. In solving the problem one can consult the detailed interpretations of the modern liberal democracy by the recent popes, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. They demonstrate that the modern liberalism abandons its axiological foundations. Liberalism takes a lot from the axiological order; Christianity is a serious contributor into the formation of the latter.
