Opis:
Twentieth-century events in Russia and Eastern Europe resulted in complex definitions of Jewish identity and communal relations. When the Soviet Union disbanded, foreign agencies pushed funds and resources to rebuild Jewish communities and institutions. One of the avenues for this funding is the creation and support of academic research centers responsible for training students and scholars. Organizations interested in Russia’s “unaffiliated Jews” and the research centers responsible for the revival of Jewish Studies form unique partnerships that bridge academic and public arenas. Reclaiming Jews who do not identify with Judaism or Jewish culture (unaffiliated Jews) in Russia is a significant goal of some Jewish funding agencies in the United States and Israel. An examination of mission statements by these philanthropic agencies reveals narrow definitions of “Jews” that ignore major contributions from Jewish Studies scholars focused on understanding a diverse population with disparate self-understandings.

Opis:
The conquest of the Near East by Alexander of Macedon began a new era in the history of this region. This pregnant event was quite differently perceived and judged by contemporaries in conquered lands, Palestine among them. To those, the Macedonian's victory over the Persians meant little more than one hegemonist replacing another. It must have been with concern, or perhaps with hope, that they awaited possible changes under the new political arrangement. We know little about Alexander's direct rule over Palestine, but the historical evidence we have suggests that the behavior of local populations in the area did not always meet the expectations of Macedonian conquerors. One example may be seen in the attitude of the Jerusalem Temple's high priest, who, despite Alexander's superiority at arms, firmly declared his loyalty to the Persian king (Jos. AJ 11, 317-319), while some in Samaria's elites chose to follow their self-interest and did not hesitate to join the conqueror (Jos. AJ 11, 321-324, 340-345). Although local elites and communities declared their willingness to cooperate with the Macedonian monarch, there were no avoiding tensions and conflicts between locals and newcomers. One such instance was a mutiny in Samaria city against the Macedonians, during which the Syrian governor Andromachus was killed. In retaliation, the rebellion was quenched in blood and Macedonian settlers were brought into Samaria.

Opis:
This article is devoted to Polish historiography of the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries concerning the Extermination of Jews and Polish-Jewish relations. It presents the works of both Polish historians and representatives of other scientific disciplines published in Poland and abroad and the Polish translations of foreign scientists’ works. Nevertheless, the article is mainly focused on the output of Polish historians because their contribution thereto is the greatest. Since the end of the 20th century, many works devoted to the Extermination of Jews to a greater or lesser extent have been published. These include both works giving the general outlook of the preparatory measures and mechanism of extermination of the Jewish population during the II World War and regional studies concerning the extermination of Jewish population in individual regions or localities in Poland under German occupation. The biographies of persons who affected the lives of thousands of people (not only the perpetrators of crimes but also the employees of Jewish administration) have been published, too. The latter has given rise to a discussion among historians as to the attitude of Jewish leaders towards their fellow-citizens and the invader’s authorities. These publications also depict issues related to various activities undertaken by the Jewish authorities (both civil administration and ghetto police), which have been discussed by Polish historians. One of the continuous concerns of Polish historians is the issue that has been studied since the end of the German occupation (penal liability of the perpetrators of crimes, the functioning of ghettos, extermination camps, labour camps and concentration camps, and the lot of Jews who were kept and murdered there). Only recently the issues pertaining to the Jewish resistance movement and the economic factors determining the Extermination of Jews in Poland under German occupation have become the subject matter of discussions and verifications. Since the end of the 20th century, Polish historiography has been much more focused on Polish-Jewish relations during the German occupation. However, studies and articles concerning this issue certainly do not exhaust the subject. Polish historiography is still searching for answers to questions concerning diversified attitudes of the Polish society towards Jewish population during the Holocaust and factors that determined these attitudes. The review of various research concerning the Extermination of Jews and Polish-Jewish relations at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries accomplished by Polish historians, which is presented in this article, shows that many new documents, memoirs and reports became then the subject matter of scientific examination and analysis, and matters that had long been ignored or consistently not mentioned for different reasons started to be discussed.

The earliest mention of Jews in Szadek dates from the early 16th century, but it was in the second half of the 18th century, that this nationality group became more numerous and started gaining prominence in the socio-economic life of this town. In 1913, every third resident of Szadek (2.8 thousand inhabitants at that time) was Jewish. The majority of trading was carried out by Jews – there were 34 shops run by Jews, and only 7 were kept by Catholics. During the Second World War most of the Jews from Szadek were put to death in a concentration camp in Chełm on the River Ner; the few who survived the occupation soon emigrated. Almost no material trace has remained of this nationality group, which had for centuries been an important component of local community, in terms of both socio-economic and cultural development. The only material evidence, being a memorial to the Jewish community in Szadek, is a Jewish cemetery, recently restored after post-war devastation.

Opis:
In the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th, many Jews belonging to high society and undertaking freelance occupations began to assimilate with their usually Christian environment. This was often a necessary prerequisite (also legally) for their social advancement. Nevertheless, their assimilation was rarely complete. In most cases, it was only partial and concerned clothes, everyday habits and education. The change in religion did not become a mass phenomenon in either Europe or America – quite the opposite. This limited assimilation was testament to the Jewish attachment to their religion, regardless of the centuries-long life in the Diaspora. Although numerous changes had occurred in the world, many of the rules respected by Jews throughout history remained valid. For instance, in their hierarchy of importance, education remained higher than wealth

The Jews and Armenians inhabiting the Poland of days gone by had much in common, despite their different beliefs. Previous research has, however, devoted little attention to this problem, and even when it has the discussion has not been entirely objective. In recent times, the problem was discussed by Krystyn Matwijowski and Nadzieżda Bańczyk and Karina Mkrtczian. While in the last twenty years studies on the history of Jews have been thorough, the history of Armenians has to a large extent been neglected by Polish historiography (with the exception of the works of M. The article sets out to profile the results of preliminary research into the stances taken by two Warsaw Yiddish daily newspapers, Haynt and Der Moment, on the phenomenon of Italian fascism. These ranged from guarded and benevolent interest, and even a certain fascination, to categorical rejection, depending on the official stance of the fascist movement towards the Jews. The article discusses the initial ad hoc judgments on fascism made in the 1920s, opinions on Polish and Jewish emulators of Mussolini, with particular attention to Vladimir Jabotinsky and the Revisionist movement, and the opinions of Jewish political journalists on Mussolini’s volte-face regarding the Jews in the 1930s. A separate section is devoted to a series of 1938 reportage features showcasing the life of the Italian Jews in Fascist Italy.

The subject of this article is an analysis of the image of Jewish identity in the novel Mi nombre es Jamaica by José Manuel Fajardo. A compari son of two variants of this identity presented in the novel reveals the reasons of differences between them. Historical circumstances have re peatedly disrupted generational continuity in the process of shaping Jewish identity, therefore, the attempts to reconstruct it may differ de pending on the person who undertakes them and on the purposes they are intended to serve. The vision of a Jewish identity in a person who has experienced generational continuity is significantly different from the vision of a person who, having no such experience, had to construct the identity himself.

This article discusses the question of neophytes’ return to Judaism, especially the case of Jan Filipowicz, who was condemned to death for this crime in 1728 in Lwów. The return of Jewish converts to their religion of origin was a relatively frequent occurrence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but those charged with this crime, especially Jews from Lwów accused of persuading the neophytes to return, were not usually treated as harshly as Filipowicz. The exceptionally harsh sentence given to the rabbis responsible for the return of Filipowicz to Judaism resulted from the judges’ belief in the existence of a ritual of dechristianization, a special blasphemy against Christianity. The relationship of the courts and the Church in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to the problem of apostasy among converts from Judaism is addressed. The penitential practices described in the court documents are similar to those described by the inquisitor Bernard Gui in the fourteenth century and to the ritual of dechristianization described by Jan Serafinowicz, the most famous eighteenth century convert.

The Jews for several hundred years lived in the Polish lands, from the 16th century on the areas of the present Biała Podlaska County and formed a significant part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth society. They had own customs, traditions, language and religion and settled primarily small towns and market settlements. To high degree they influenced the socio-economic development of the Lublin region, including Sławatycze – small town on the Bug River.
Zamieszkiwali przede wszystkim małe miasteczka i osady targowe.

The article explains the meaning of the term "Messianic Jews" through a literal analysis of each word component. The term "Jew" is analyzed first. The root of the word originates from Judah, biblical character, son of Jacob and party to God's covenant. The analysis talks about what Jewish identity is and presents some of significant views on the issue. The article follows then to focus on the term "messiah", originally a royal title which later went on to mean "chosen" and became closely associated with Jesus Christ. The analysis of those two word components serves as a basis for explaining the movement as that of Jews who accept Jesus Christ as a messiah – a movement which has successfully developed since its inception in the 1890s.

I argue that in interwar Greece there was a small yet influential of anti-Semitic anticommunists, whose centre and main area of interest was Salonica. I attempt to demonstrate that their ideas were not a particular Greek phenomenon- rather these intellectuals and activists distanced themselves from traditional forms of Greek anti-Semitism. On the contrary, their appearance was part of a panEuropean phenomenon triggered by the October Revolution in Russia, and facilitated by the ensuing immigration of the defeated Whites. This ideology should be understood within the context of the Ottoman imperial collapse, the ensuing relocation of populations and the anxiety of Balkan nationstates to ensure their national frontiers

The article deals with the question of film as a source of historical knowledge using the example of how Jews were treated in American society in the 20th century and how this was reflected in films. His analysis suggests that there is a clear correlation between historical events of this period and the frequency and manner of portraying the dilemmas of the religiously and culturally separate Jewish minority in the United States. But this is not a one-sided relationship, as films not only reflected this social issue, but also influenced American attitudes towards the Jewish minority. Although the question of the role played by films in historiography requires further, wider investigations, the article clearly shows that with certain caution, films can be treated as a source of historical knowledge, and especially on the social attitudes of the era.

Different Jewish thinkers were interested in Jesus since antiquity. But until the modern times they had spoken about him very little and rather negatively. In the sixteenth century a new stage of this interest appeared because several Jews began to look at Jesus with widely opened eyes. They were ready to know critically Jesus on the basis of Christian sources. This paper presents view of Solomon ibn Verga, Abraham Farissol, Jehuda Karmi, Leo Modena, Baruch Spinoza and Jacob Emden. In this way they showed that a profound communication should precede any formal dialogue between Judaism and Christianity.

A fragment of the Epicurean account of Diogenes of Oinoanda (2nd century AD), which was found in 1997, revealed a mention of the most superstitious and abominable Jews and Egyptians. The fragment is part of A Treatise on Physics and repeats the Epicurean view that gods do not interfere in people’s lives. The aforementioned peoples serve the exemplification that the world of humans is separated from the world of the gods. Both expressions refer to the stereotypical perception of the Jews and Egyptians that is well-known from Greek-Roman literature. However, it seems that the way both ethne imagined their gods – in the form of animals (the Egyptians’ view) and without any cultic statues (the Jews’ view) – was meaningful for Diogenes, who like other Epicureans attached great importance to the worship of images of gods.

Praca odnosi się do roli, jaką odegrali Żydzi w dziejach Ostrołęki. Historia Żydów ostrołęckich to zaledwie 140 lat – od zezwolenia zaborczych władz pruskich na wejście do miasta do nakazu okupacyjnych władz hitlerowskich, by opuścili Ostrołękę. Historia ta ma jednak własną specyfikę i swoisty koloryt.
The articule refers to the role of Jews in the history of Ostrołęka. It is only 140 years of the Jewish history in this town – from the permission of the annexationist Prussian authorities to enter the town until the order of occupational Nazi authorities to leave Ostrołęka. However, the history of Jews has its own specificity and peculiar tone.

ghetto uprising in Białystok
Opis:
Białystok, which before 1939 was known as an important centre of Jewish life in Poland, in the years to follow – because of the war – stopped to be a Jewish hub. The majority of those citizens of Białystok who had survived the Holocaust, decided to abandon the ruined city which evoked bad memories. They were leaving the city gradually and, due to this process and the decisions of the communist authorities, the activities of Jewish institutions were languishing. After 1950 in the city there were fewer than 200 people who identified themselves as Jews and some of them still intended to leave the country. A department of the government-controlled Social-Cultural Association of Jews in Poland and (until 1954) a denominational congregation constituted the only still functioning Jewish institutions. The most important goal of the Jewish community was to organise celebrations commemorating subsequent anniversaries of the ghetto uprising in Białystok (1943). Limited cultural and self-helping activities were also conducted. The local Jewish community ceased to exist after 1968, when a considerable number of Polish Jews was forced to emigrate. Those who remained were mainly elderly people, who did not conduct any social activities. In the 1970s almost all of the still existing traces of Jewish presence in the city were obliterated. When, in the next decade, a wave of renewed interest in the Jewish culture came, not very numerous Poles were involved in Białystok.

The fact that only 10% of the Jews from the whole population overcame the extermination should be borne in mind. There is a related branch of research that seeks to determine how long Jewish life continued in Europe, where and under what conditions. In the last few years, we have become aware of the extent to which Jews actually built new possibilities after World War II in Poland, 1945–1968. In fact, the prevailing popular image of post–war Jewry is a simplistic one that divides the Jewish population into basic groups: the assimilated Jews of Russia; the “Jewish Jews” of Poland and other western areas, annexed to the Soviet Union, who sought to preserve at least some aspects of Yiddishkayt (Jewishness); and the traditional Jews, who remained devout. In the period of 1945–1950, the Jews created the most important center of Jewish Life in Europe, in terms of culture, industry, education and intellectual life. A stabilization period of the Jewish settlement began with the autumn of 1946. The softening of emigration rules and the closure of the Polish borders in the winter of 1947 helped Jews fully concentrate on the Jewish life in Poland. At that time, political, social, economic and cultural activities continued to be carried out on a large scale. In 1946, 16,960 Jews were registered in Wrocław. With the change of the policy towards the Jewish community by the communist government of Poland, the Jewish settlement in Wrocław slowed down and eventually, at the beginning of the 70’s, Jewish life in the Lower Silesia disappeared from the cultural map of the local landscapes.Even though some of the Jewish settlers remained in the Lower Silesia to continue Jewish life in this territory, the community never became as strong and influential as it was at the beginning of the settlement.

This paper explores the phenomenon of marginal identities in Israel, focusing on the Ethiopian Jewish community as a representative case study. As a multicultural nation, Israel grapples with the intricacies of integrating diverse ethnic and religious groups into its social fabric. Ethiopian Jews, a small and unique group in the Israeli social landscape, face multifaceted challenges in their quest for acceptance. The research delves into the complexities of identity formation within the Ethiopian Jewish community, considering the interplay of their history of immigration to Israel, unique religious practices, and the process of integration into Israeli society. It is accompanied by comparisons to other aliyot, in particular Mizrahi Jews and post-Soviet Jews. By analyzing the power dynamics that define Ethiopian Israelis’ status within Israel’s imagined community, this paper seeks to unveil the reasons behind their marginalization in the country, in particular focusing on the construction of Israeli national discourse. Ultimately, this paper aims to deepen the understanding of marginal identities in Israel, using the example of Ethiopian Jews to shed light on the broader challenges faced by marginalized communities in diverse societies. The paper offers valuable insights for policymakers, social advocates, and scholars striving to promote inclusivity and social cohesion within multicultural nations.

The idea of deporting the Jewish population of Europe was part of a modern anti-Semitism. Poland was no exception in this regard. Under the influence of other countries implementing anti-Jewish laws, also Polish anti-Semitism became more radical. After 1935, such postulates were openly expressed as the policy of the Polish government has changed its character – from state to national. Additionally, due to the global economic crisis the idea began to be taken far more seriously not just in national Catholic circles. The resettlement of Jews was seen as the way to reduce unemployment and to ‘Polonise’ Polish cities, as masses of poor peasants could replaced the Jewish workers as far as trade and craftsmanship were concerned. The authors of immigration plans for European Jews suggested evacuating them most willingly to uncivilised countries – including Madagascar (a French colony) – due to the fact that their lands were either not used at all or only used to an insufficient and inadequate extent. In Poland, the idea was first adopted in 1926 as a solution to the problem of overpopulation in rural areas. However, the conditions on the island did not allow settlement and soon the idea fell through. Yet it came back a decade later as a proposal of deporting exclusively Polish Jews. At the time, the project was taken much more seriously and in 1937 the Polish government commissioned a task force to examine the possibility of settling in Madagascar and to evaluate the island’s potential, in particular its climate and labour conditions. But the reports of the commission members were full of contradictions and the French were showing growing caution on the matter.

The purpose of this article is to identify mechanisms of influence exerted by security agents on citizens in authoritarian People's Republic of Poland. The author uses the life of Tadeusz Pankiewicz, honoured with the medal "Righteous Among the Nations", as an example to show the procedures ran by the security apparatus against citizen. The case of T. Pankiewicz was unique due to circumstances of his wartime merit for the Jewish community of Krakow, his resulting social position, prestige and great respect he was bestowed with. It is therefore understandable that his case was considered special in an attempt to analyse. The text highlights operational methods, along with critical commentary, aimed at acquiring T. Pankiewicz for cooperation, and the actual failure of these efforts. The article has rich academic value and is based on archival material.

F or a period of three weeks (1–22 November 1918), Lviv was a divided city. In their attempt to conquer it, the Ukrainians faced spontaneous opposition from its residents. The Jews, who were the second largest group of residents after the Poles, formed their own militia and announced neutrality. However, they did not follow this announcement, and the militia actively cooperated with the Ukrainian army. After the Ukrainians had been forced by the defendants out of Lviv and voluntary units had arrived from Cracow, the city fell into criminal riots which cost the lives of 44 people (33 Jews and 11 Christians), and 443 people were wounded. The official data were established by the Extraordinary Government Investigation Committee chaired by Judge Zygmunt Rymowicz. The riots lasted several days (22–24 November 1918). The delayed reaction of the Polish military authorities exacerbated the disturbances. The author proves that in terms of the natio - nality (religion) of the victims, the riots were of a criminal nature.

Amidst all trends present nowadays, the latest and the most controversial appears to be the Jewish Reconstructionism, which has been conceived by Mordecai M. Kaplan. The starting point for Reconstructionist involves actual reconstruction of traditional Judaism, which takes place based on ideas taken from social and natural sciences. The performed analyses permit to state (but not to conclude decisively), that Jewish Reconstructionism is a specific Jewish theory, a way of living for a certain group of Jews, but it is not a Judaism. The Kaplan's system, which represents a result of an intentional reconstruction and revaluation of traditional Judaism, becomes in fact a deconstruction and a devaluation of Judaism.

In Between. Two Home Countries in the Polish Language Press for Jewish Children in the Second Polish RepublicIn the interwar period in Poland the big Polish-language Jewish journals (Chwila, Nowy Dziennik and Nasz Przegląd) published supplements for children. Two of them (Chwilka and Dzienniczek dla Dzieci i Młodzieży [Diary for children and young people]) were typical magazines for children. The third, the Mały Przegląd [Little review], led initially by Janusz Korczak, became the tribune of its youngest readers. Its content was composed of letters, reports and interviews by young correspondents. All these magazines were directed to children of the accultured Jews, readers of Polish-language Zionist press. It would seem, therefore, that their educational ideals should be similar. How were the patriotic values shown to the Jewish children from the acculturated Zionist families, familiar with Polish culture better than average Jewish children, but raised in cult of Palestine and the return to Eretz? What should be told to the children, if they were to be educated as good patriots? And patriots of what country? How to explain Palestinian patriotism to children who have never seen their country, lived in Poland and spoke Polish? And at the same time – how to explain the Polish patriotism to children who live in a country with a constantly growing anti-Semitism, of which they are only the marginalized, second-class citizens. As a result, the two dailies, almost identical in their views, have supplements presenting a surprisingly different approach to patriotism. The article was based on an analysis of all vintages of Dzienniczek and Mały Przegląd. I jakiego kraju patriotów? W rezultacie dwa pisma wyrastające z dwóch niemal identycznych w poglądach dzienników prezentowały zaskakująco różne podejście do patriotyzmu. Artykuł oparty został na analizie wszystkich roczników „Dzienniczka” i „Małego Przeglądu”.

This paper describes S.Y. Agnon’s ironic, dual, modern attitude to the Song of Songs, as a traditionalist and as one who identifies himself with the doctor’s statements: “We are enlightened individuals, modern people, we seek freedom for ourselves and for all humanity, and in point of fact we are worse than the most die-hard reactionaries.” Agnon’s attitude to the world of love is the attitude of a young Jewish artist of the late 19th century who lives in a world of revolutionary changes that also affect the Jewish world. Agnon’s work stands as a tombstone of the gradually unraveling Jewish shtetl and its institutions and values, specifically, the declining status of love and its significance for the values of family, society, and the Jewish nation. The young Jewish man experiences the changing seasons of the late 19th century and early 20th century, reflected in the vacillation between the traditional conception of love by the traditional world, and the modern perception that views love as an element in individual self-realization. “They say that love exists in the world” – but what is love in Agnon’s world? What are the sources of the gap that many of Agnon’s protagonists experience – the gap between yearning, dreams, and heart’s desires, and the potential for their realization in practice?

Opis:
Eusebius' Chronika was a remarkable achievement in the field of ancient chronography, not least as the conclusion of extensive research running since the beginning of the Hellenistic period. It was a double work, composed some time before AD 311 and expanded shortly after AD 325. The first part, now usually called Chronographia, was a detailed introduction, aiming at collecting the raw material from all sources then available, and setting out the plan of the project. The second part, known as Kanones (Chronikoi Kanones), which carried its own preface, was a grand exposition (utilising the data of the first part) in the form of a table consisting of up to nine parallel columns to be read across, thus presenting a synchronistic universal history at a glance.1 Only fragments survive of the Greek original, primarily in George the Syncellus (ca. AD 800) and an anonymous excerptor (known as 'Excerpta Eusebiana' from a MS of the 15th century AD). But we have a nearly complete Armenian translation (earliest copy ca. 13th century AD), a Latin translation of the second part by Jerome (with his own preface and extended to AD 380/1), as well as two Syriac epitomes, one of which is believed to have been compiled by Joshua the Stylite (8th century AD), and other witnesses including two very early Arab chroniclers, one being Agapius of Hierapolis, ca. Opis:
Jews from Central-Eastern Europe play a significant role in the formation of individual and social self-awareness in the Jewish world. It seems that in the Jewish world there exists a polarised approach to the Jews from this part of the world. On the one hand, there is pride, on the other, prejudice verging on shame. Some Jews have identified themselves with the group, others did the opposite, denied having anything to do with them. The most important question of our analyses is: what is the role of Eastern European Jews in building Jewish collective identity? Byron Sherwin, an American Jew, is an example of a great fascination with the Yiddish civilisation. Not only does he recognize and appreciate the spiritual legacy of Jews in Poland for other Jews around the world, but also accords this legacy a pre-eminent status in the collective Jewish identity. At the same time, he is conscious of the fact that not all Jews, if only in the United States, share his view. It is an upshot of the deep prejudice towards the life in the European Diaspora, which has been in evidence for some time. The same applies to the Jews in Israel. The new generations see the spiritual and cultural achievements of the Eastern European Jews as a legacy that should be learned and developed. This engenders hope that the legacy of the Jews of Eastern Europe will be preserved and will become a foundation of identity for future generations.

There are many factors that significantly influenced the Japanese attitude towards the Jews. Certainly, the most important are: more than 250 years of isolation and cultural dissimilarity, mainly in terms of religion. Within a short space of time, after Japan was forcefully opened to the outside world – with knowledge of art, literature, technological achievements and political and social changes – the Japanese learned about European opinions of the Jews, including the religious ones. However, it did not have an impact on the Japanese attitude towards the Jews. Political developments in the late 1800s and early 1900s created an image of the Jew as an influential person with a great ability in finance management. Japanese elites were convinced that loans granted by Jewish banks contributed to the victory over Western power – Tsarist Russia. Western politicians realised then that Japan has become an important player on Asian political scene. What influenced the Japanese attitude towards the Jews were accusations of inciting chaos in the world – for instance the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Japanese became more cautious, especially when it came to the basic premises of the so-called Fugu Plan but it did not change Japanese-Jewish relations. This attitude preserved even during the times of the Japan’s seemed-to-be close cooperation with the Third Reich – although other countries would tighten their policies towards the Jews.

The presence of Jews in the representations of Galician cities was both one of the results of the introduction of their equal rights, and its consolidation. Jews present in municipal governments took care about matters relevant not only for their community. They engaged in key projects directed at all citizens, regardless of faith and nationality. The voting system (due to the specific division into circles and curiae) preferred the richest and the best-educated. In consequence, the Jewish community was commonly represented in city councils by those coming from families of assimilated representatives of intelligentsia, merchants and bankers. Obviously, the greatest percentage of white-collar employees could be observed in bigger cities, being seats of courts, barrister’s chambers, notary offices, secondary schools and higher education institutions. Therefore, from that time on, their voice could be heard in the public space and had to be taken into account.

The increasingly critical situation of the Jewish minority and the bankruptcy of the previously dominant political orientations within the Jewish community created a new set of opportunities for a group, the General Jewish Workers’ Alliance, or Bund which had played only a marginal role in both Polish and Jewish politics between 1920 and 1935. The growing strength of the Bund was clearly evident in the municipal elections of late 1938 and early 1939 which saw it emerge as the largest Jewish party in towns such as Warsaw, Łódź, Vilna and Białystok. This article seeks to evaluate the Bund’s reaction to its heightened importance in Jewish politics in Poland.

Opis:
This text is dedicated to the Jewish cemetery in Gorlice – a sub-Carpathian town up to the Second World War inhabited by more than 3 000 Jews, male and female, i.e. slightly over 50 percent of the entire population. The cemetery contains only an ohel and several matzevahs, but it is difficult to decipher anything featured on them. Memory too is defunct in spite of the fact that thousands were buried here – the cemetery is already over 200 years old. Nonetheless, life goes on and that which once was human is now intertwined and becomes a unity with plants and, more extensively, with Nature. The cemetery is overgrown by old trees and shrubs; stones crumble and establish symbiosis with plants covering them; deer graze in high grass. Ewa Domańska wrote in Nekros: a cemetery is “a terrain of widely comprehended heritage, transgressing the ideas of culture and Nature, a chronological line of short time; a place where time unravels and assorted entangled histories, to use a term devised by quantum physicists, function, and where various chemical and physical processes turn into processes creating the sphere of the sacrum”. The author of the article is interested precisely in those “entangled histories” and crumbling space, which initiate a joint – botanical-anthropological – story about the Jews of Gorlice, their life and death, the traces they left behind, and the new form of existence whose part they are. “Woven into / eternal being – / you shall not elapse, / not elapse” – the poetess wrote.

Autor dokonuje na wstępie konceptualizacji pojęć Ruchu mesjanistyczno-żydowskiego i Paschy mesjanistycznej, a następnie przedstawia rys historyczny wydarzeń, nazywanych sederami, które od kilkunastu lat gromadzą setki uczestników: katolików, protestantów, zielonoświątkowców, przedstawicieli wolnych Kościołów. Następnie ukazuje genezę krakowskich Pasch mesjanistycznych (wieczorów sederowych), prezentując je w zestawieniu chronologicznym. Nakreśla szersze perspektywy, w jakich uwidacznia się Pascha mesjanistyczna w polskiej rzeczywistości religijnej.
The article presents selected issues related to the history and development of the messianic Passover in Kraków, in 2007-2019. These are the paschal meetings that have been gathering hundreds of participants for several years: Catholics, Protestants, Pentecostals, representatives of free churches. The first part describes the meaning of the Jewish Seder; the second shows the origin of “Kraków messianic meetings” (Seder evenings); the third one presents the chronology of these meetings. The author shows how the Kraków Seders contributed to popularizing the idea of messianic Pasches among various churches and Christian communities in Poland.

The Archives of Bosnia-Herzegovina, marked with tragedy of fire, had stored large archive collections of files of Austro-Hungarian officials. Among them there had been a numerous group of files of Galician officials, including those of Jewish descent (20%). The collection of 19 files that has survived the fire does not entitle us to unequivocally state any thesis on processes of acculturation of Galician Jews in Bosnia. Nevertheless, we can observe that many Ashkenazi newcomers from Galicia described themselves as Poles, even though initially they had not identified with Polish national idea. Possibly the reason for this is the fact that the Polish community in Bosnia was culturally closer to Galician Jews than local Sephardic population or Ashkenazi immigrants from other countries.

The dominant classification of Acts as the history of the early Christian Church whose main aim is to present the spread of the nascent movement from a less important part of the Roman Empire (Judea) to the very heart of the Empire (Rome), seems to be supported by Ac 1, 8 which is often taken as a kind of very general a table of contents. However, the rather unexpected end of Acts (a short and laconic account regarding Paul’s period in Rome), and Luke’s approach to and use of his sources, allow us to assume that Luke was aiming rather at a great story involving some main hearos and many other participants than are involved in just one thematic story. Following this assumption, based on the content of Acts, it is possible to individuate two main heroes (Peter and Paul) whose fate is somehow connected with many other persons that are also involved in giving witness to Jesus the Resurrected Messiah. In this study we look at Acts as the story concerning the two the most important witnesses, Peter and Paul, in order to determine their contribution to establishing the structural and doctrinal foundation of the New Israel.

This period maps the changes that appeared since the end of Second Palestinian intifada to the year 2014 which is the last year with available set of data of anti-Semitism in Czech society. The article shall examine whether there is a direct link between the contemporary important events in the Middle East and the changing number of anti-Semitic incidents in the Czech Republic. The attention shall also be given to the issue which groups of Czech society are mostly associated with anti-Semitism and what is their main motivation to participate in the anti-Semitic campaign.

Opis:
The article is a reaction to the second edtion of Józef Czechowicz’s Letters (2011), which the author compares to the first edition (1977). It turns out that the poet’s letters, when they went through censorship screening in the 1970s, were purged not only of politically charged passages, where he mentions Miłosz, Czuchnowski, Iwaniuk, and Łobodowski, as well as the critical passages about Marxism, but also his remarks about Jews, remarks that were mostly antisemitic and stereotypical. The analysis of these passages is confronted with Czechowicz’s photographs of the Jewish quarter in Lublin and with the “Jewish traces” in his poetry. Above all, however, the discussion focuses on the language of violence, exposed in the poem śmierć [death] in the volume called dzień jak co dzień. The poem has been interpreted polemically, in opposition to Jacek Leociak, who reads śmierć both figuratively and as a text about a slaughterhouse. In this way, unexpected dimensions of Czechowicz’s sensitivity are shown, as the poet understands the cruelty of modern “animal killing industry” (used by the designers of the Holocaust machine), while at the same time he uses a dangerous array of antisemitic stereotypes, which were previously unknown to his critics.

The article is the first part of statistical analysis of marriage records of Jewish people from Piotrków Trybunalski for the period of 1808–1870. The author rises issues related to the age of entering into a marriage taking into consideration: social and economic factors, permanent celibacy, prospective spouses’ origins, seasonality, and remarriage patterns. One of the most significant conclusions is the age of concluding a marriage which is the first one for both parties, it is assigned about 20 for women and 22 for men – distinctly lower than in non-Jewish urban communities in the 19th century, like in Piotrków Trybunalski. The author points out diversity in matrimonial customs among Jewish communities of Poland of that time. The statistical evidence from Piotrków Trybunalski does not provide full explanation of the observed differences. Both frequent marriages of widowers with single women, and the duration of widowhood among the group being studied fit into a model investigated in other (non-Jewish) communities, and are contrary to traditional Judaism recommendations.

My article discusses the phenomenon of ‘sarahbernhardtisation’, which occurred in the winter of 1882 in Warsaw as a result of Sarah Bernhardt’s guest performances in one of the city’s theatres. It consisted in imitating the appearance and manner of the French star. I suggest that the sarahbernhardtisation is an example of early fan practice, where fascination with the idol coincided with the need to break the hegemonic model of femininity. I also argue that the anti-Jewish riots that preceded the French actress’s visit to Warsaw were of crucial significance for the social reception of Bernhardt and the wave of fan mimicry inspired by her.

At the end of the fourth century and beginning of the fifth century AD, there were numerous acts of violence between Christians and Jews. This background exposes the especially interesting, isolated message of Socrates Scholasticus concerning the events at Inmestar in Syria (HE VII 16), where some drunken Jews murdered a Christian boy. Although many details of Socrates’ narrative seem unclear, it appears that the murder itself did not occur on the occasion of the feast of Purim, as was often assumed in the older literature concerning this topic. Consequently, the event is further proof of the local conflicts between believers of the two religions.
