Opis:
Experimental results of irradiation effects by heavy ions with high inelastic energy losses at the surfaces of some amorphous alloys are presented. It was shown that all studied alloys strongly swelled: up to 15% for Ni58Nb42 under irradiation with the 305 MeV 86Kr ion at a fluence of 1015 ion/cm2. Besides, the sputtering (evaporation) process takes place, too. Calculations of the temperatures on the ion trajectory axis were presented. It was shown that the calculated temperatures are higher than the melting temperature and the evaporation temperature, too. From these findings we can conclude that the sputtering (evaporation) of atoms in amorphous alloys is present.

Opis:
The results of the influence of heavy ion irradiation in the inelastic energy loss region on the structure of some metals such as nickel, single crystal tungsten, chromium-nickel stainless steel and cold-deformed gold are presented. It was shown that the sputtering (evaporation) yield strongly depends on the density of defects in these metals. The sputtering yield starts to grow strongly with the increase of damages created by elastic and inelastic energy heavy ion losses. The stainless steel surface structure behaved differently under irradiation than the pure metal surface structure.

Opis:
InP and GaAs crystal structure changes under the influence of swift Kr and Bi ions have been studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and selective chemical etching. The previous disordering of samples by electron irradiation has shown to lead to macrodefect formation in the form of cracks and breaks, at the depths near the ion end-of-range, and on the crystal surface. A possible explanation of the observed effects is proposed.

Opis:
30 keV $Ga^{+}$ irradiation-induced changes of magnetic and magneto-optical properties of sputtered Pt/Co/Pt ultrathin trilayers films have been studied as a function of the ion fluence. Out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy states with enhanced magneto-optical effects were evidenced for specific values of cobalt thickness and irradiation fluence. Results obtained after uniform or quasi-uniform focused ion beam irradiation on either out-of-plane or in-plane magnetized sputtered pristine trilayers are compared. Similar irradiation-induced magnetic changes are evidenced in quasi-uniformly focused ion beam or uniformly irradiated films, grown either by sputtering or molecular beam epitaxy. We discuss on plausible common mechanisms underlying the observed effects.

Opis:
Stainless steel (SS) is a well-known material for the internal parts of nuclear power plants. It is known that these alloys exhibit radiation-induced segregation (RIS) at point defect sinks at moderate temperature, while in service. The RIS behavior of SS can be a potential problem by increasing the susceptibility to irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking. In this work, the RIS behavior of solute atoms at sinks in SS 316 irradiated with Fe4+ ions were characterized by atom probe tomography (APT). There were torus-shaped defects along with a depletion of Cr and enrichment of Ni and Si. These clusters are believed to be dislocation loops resulting from irradiation. The segregation of solutes was also observed for various defect shapes. These observations are consistent with other APT results from the literature. The composition of the clusters was analyzed quantitatively almost at the atomic scale. Despite the limitations of the experiments, the APT analysis was well suited for discovering the structure of irradiation defects and performing a quantitative analysis of RIS in irradiated specimens.

Opis:
Changes in the optical characteristics in synthetic sapphire specimens produced by microsecond pulse irradiation with a stream of hydrogen ions of energies ranging up to tens keV have been observed. Data on decrease in the optical reflection, measured within the wavelength range of 200 900 nm, are presented. This characterization is compared with the data received by optical and atomic force microscopy as well as by lattice structure analysis performed with X-rays. The measurements indicate that the changes of optical parameters are not a consequence of absorption increase and/or sapphire decomposition. They result from modifications of the morphology and structure of surface layer of the sapphire samples, induced by irradiation.

Opis:
The results of experimental investigations of powerful hydrogen plasma jets and fast ion beams interaction with various materials (austenitic chromium-manganese steels, pure vanadium, tungsten, graphite, copper, and their alloys: Cu-4 mass% Ni and Cu-10 mass% Ga) are presented. The materials were placed on the discharge axis of the PF-1000 device and irradiated with fluxes of fast ions (of energy in the range from tens keV up to several MeV) and with plasma streams (of power flux density q~(108 109) W/cm2). It was found that the fast ions and plasma streams caused different damages to the aforementioned materials. A diverse character of the damages to the individual investigated material was revealed. Some peculiarities of the process as well as the correlation between the surface density of the "macroscopic" structural defects (blisters and craters) and the fluence of the fast ions implanted in the specimen are discussed.

Opis:
A review of the results received in the course of fulfillment of the International Atomic Energy Agency Co-ordinated Research Project “Dense Magnetized Plasma” for the last 3 years is presented. Niche of the plasma type within the plasma physics field is outlined. Efforts of the CRP participants concentrated on design and operation of new Dense Magnetized Plasma devices are described. All of them designed for plasma heating and for other applications mainly based on the interaction of radiations generated by the devices with different objects. Materials exploitable, diagnostics of the interaction processes, as well as analytical equipment used by the participants to process the irradiated targets are described. Works developed in the frame of the CRP are covered thermonuclear fusion applications, fundamental plasma physics and material science issues, medicine, biology, and some other spheres. New data on the interaction of the radiations generated in this apparatus with various materials are given. E.g. it was found that the necessary dose producing activation/inactivation of enzymes can be much lower if used at a high-power flux density in comparison with those received with classical sources. All these experiments are discussed in the framework of pulsed radiation chemistry in its perfect sense thereto the criteria are formulated. New foreseen applications of DMP devices mainly based on neutron radiation are proposed and discussed.
