Opis:
Mediality of Youthspeak The article concerns the problems in the functioning of youth sociolect in the cultural space. This expressive and playful linguistic register has gained popularity not only as a ‘speech of youth’, but also as a specific ‘code’ used to express a postmodern lifestyle, associated with the cult of youth, fun, dynamics, openness to different cultural practices. As such, it operates along the lines of “acceptative modes of expression” both in media discourse (eg. press, advertising, political, celebrity) and in artistic and paraartistic texts (eg. literary works, song lyrics, film forms, skits). In this context, an important question appears – whether youth speak and youth sociolect are still the same phenomenon?

Opis:
The author discusses the reception of Olga Tokarczuk’s works in Romania on the basis of translations, critical essays and radio and press interviews. Olga Tokarczuk is the best-known contemporary writer from Central Europe in Romania, thanks to numerous translations (almost all of her novels have been translated into Romanian, except The Books of Jacob, due to be published next year). An important role in the dissemination of her works has been played by the Polirom publishing house in Iași, which published a special series devoted to Tokarczuk. The quality of the translations of the Polish novelist’s texts is also high. Particular credit for this goes to Cristina Godun, a specialist in Polish Studies, who has managed to render the peculiarities of Tokarczuk’s narrative and style in Romanian. The paper also briefly discusses the difficulties encountered during the translation of Tokarczuk’s texts.

The purpose of this article is to examine the influence of surrealistic painting on contemporary advertising, taking into consideration the differences in use of surrealistic references on three levels of literalness: advertisement citing specific, surrealistic images, advertisement made of mosaic of various borrowings from surrealistic painting, finally advertisement created in a surrealistic manner, considered as a type of post-surrealistic masterpiece. To begin with theoretical issues connected with postmodern culture of image, the phenomena of contemporary advertisement and its intertextual relations with art, author tries to find answers on following questions: Why surrealism became so attractive material for advertisement? Is it possible, to acknowledge advertisement profiting from surrealistic painting, as an example of postmodern statement? Is it valid, basing on its example, to treat about the type of transgression in contemporary advertisement? The conclusions of this analysis include: purpose and function of use of surrealism in advertisement, the role of visual layer, disappearance of persuasive function to the benefit of strengthening the esthetic function and inscribing advertisement into postmodern paradigm of culture.

The text at the level of its title refers to Maxim Gorky's play  The Lower Depths.  Shpric’s comedy parodies this work by presentingGorky's characters in the social and cultural context of contemporary reality. The main purpose of the paper is the intertextual analysis and interpretation of ironic Shpric’s comedy as the transcontextualization of language, poetics, themes, plot and characters ofGorky's text.

From the moment of his literary debut in 1989, Michele Mari is considered to be the representative of classic tendencies in contemporary Italian literature. One of the most noticeable characteristics of his writing is the presence of autobiographic elements which appear in all his works with different intensity, but also the archaization of style and language, literary references and metaliterary reflexions. This article aims at showing how the 1992 novel La stiva e l’abisso connects two of those aspects of Mari’s writing: intertextuality and literary references to adventure novel genre, as well as it reflects on the role and value of the literature for the contemporary people. It analyses basic narrative instances, that is the narrator, narrative structure, place and time of events, in order to show how they result in metaliterary reflexion.

The key concepts of history, power, nation, and fatherland gain a new erudite interpretation. Consistent in uncovering totalitarian discourse, Jerofiejew demythologizes opinions and prejudices, deconstructs ideas, concepts and attitudes. While bringing to life the portrait of Russian mentality and their national character, he proposes hierarchy but never accepts taboos. Consequently, "Encyklopedia" does not appeal to popular tastes. It is a multifaceted “miniature gallery”, a bitter diagnosis of the essence of Russianness and the condition of Russian culture.

The main issues discussed in this article are the intertextual relationships between two novels: one the most famous modernistic texts — Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and The Hours by Michael Cunningham. The American writer’s novel alludes already in the title to Woolf’s work. The Hours was the working title for Mrs Dalloway. The detailed analysis of the various references to it acknowledges the hypotext in the Cunningham novel and proves that intertextuality in this case has its mainly existential dimension: for heroines of The Hours Mrs Dalloway provides an opportunity for not only re-writing or re-reading but for re-existing as well.

Opis:
The paper is an attempt to investigate the possibilities and limitations connected with the unreflective adaptation of the concept of intertexuality, worked out by theoreticians of literature, to musicological research. The author is especially interested in assessing in that sense the concept of the relationships between literary styles proposed by Stanisław Balbus in the book Between Styles, which is currently the source of inspiration for many Polish musicologists. The starting point of the reflection is recalling the doubts addressed by Tibor Kneif already in the 1970s, as far as the reasonableness of using the achievements of semiotics by musicologists is concerned. Going further, the author enters into discussion with some Polish musicologists who use the proposals of intertextuality researchers, e.g. Balbus’, quite too hastily, and examines the examples of sub-mitting by them as intertextual musical works in which one can not find in fact any intertextual relations. The author describes as unreasonable the procedure of presenting the musical works based on borrowings as especially worthy in the sense of their connection with the tradition. The danger lies here in the fact of how easily objective analysis can be replaced with ideology. The author also reminds that most of extra-textual relationships in musical works can be describedusing the traditional tools of musicological analysis — aimed at searching the autonomous sense of music.

Since the beginning of 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has changed not only many aspects of everyday life, but also the lexical systems of languages. Polish and Russian have been enriched with numerous derivatives, loan words, as well as new collocations pretending to become neophrasemes. The linguistic image of the pandemic consists of miscellaneous metaphorical expressions picturing the reality in terms of war, sports’ competitions or natural disasters. New Polish and Russian collocations present different problems of the pandemic crisis and the diverse attitude of individuals and social groups to its threat to public health and the measures taken by governments and international institutions. Furthermore, the analyzed pandemic discourse contains many examples of intertextuality sensu lato. These are allusions to literary texts, music, film, and history. The image of the pandemic in Polish and Russian has been complemented by means of idiomatic transformations, humorous expressions and jokes, which are natural and spontaneous answers to long-lasting fear, anxiety and frustration.

„My name is Nobody” — says Odysseus in Homer’s epic and these words deliver him from death. On the one hand, both the name and the very act of speech constitute a proof of existence of the speaker, on the other hand, however, its existence is undermined by the negation implied by the very notion of „nobody”. Unclear ontological/referential connotations of „nobody” evoke textual effects that are based on the notions of indeterminacy and self-reference — two basic constituents of every figure of thought referred to as paradox. Thus, it seems hardly surprising that Kafka explores the potentiality of this life-saving wordplay. The theme of nobody is deeply rooted in the binary logic, but, also, attempts to exceed its limits. Exceeding these limits is encouraged in every excursion to Kafka’s realm.

Śpiew bowiem dominuje w drugiej zwrotce („Śpiewała do niego, mówiła do niego”), natomiast rybak pogrąża się w odmętach morza dopiero w czwartej zwrotce, gdzie dominuje perswazja słowna („Mówiła do niego, śpiewała do niego”).
Texts are transcendental in a at least two ways. On one hand, they are transcendental through the language – the substance of texts – which by constituting diachronic relationships and functioning in synchrony transcend – to use Karl Jaspers’ term – past reality in the form of the then existing signs and their meanings into future then unknown from that perspective, and thus also the present as known to us. On the other hand, texts interact with each other and as it were, create hypertexts in time and space. There also exists a third dimension – the author and the reader (each independently) whom the text allows, to quote Gerhard Kurz, to go ‘beyond oneself’ because only then we experience the need to return to ‘one’s own I’, rejecting on the way a successive mask (Greek and Latin persona). In this article the concept is illustrated in the context of Franz Kafka’s texts. Among the multitude of themes presented, let us limit ourselves to the topos of the Sirens who lured sailors with their singing. In Kafka’s works the Sirens no longer sing, so Odysseus need not have asked to have his ears blocked with wax. At that point Kafka only completed the process of change, for already earlier in German literature the singing had grown quieter and quieter. Thus in Heine’s wellknown song “Loreley” the poet is no longer convinced about the effectiveness of the mermaid’s singing – he only wishes to believe in it: “I think that the waves will devour the boatman and the boat as one” (as translated by A.Z. Foreman). Because in times of nihilism the singing – and art in general – had lost their power. In Goethe’s “Fisherman” the mermaid still triumphs, but not because of her singing. Her song dominates in the second verse (“She sang to him, she spoke to him” as translated by John Storer Cobb), but the fisherman immerses himself in the abyss of the sea only in the fourth verse which is dominated by verbal persuasion (“She spoke to him, she sang to him”). This inversion – nota bene lacking in the Polish translation by Hanna Januszewska in “Dzieła wybrane” J.W. Goethe (PIW 1983) – could not have been accidental: it symbolizes the reversed image typical of a mirror reflection – in reality the fisherman had seen his own reflection in the water and mistook it for the image of a mermaid. His death in the abyss of the sea was a price paid for lack of selfknowledge. It was not without reason that the inscription on the Temple of Apollo in Delphi read: “Γνῶθι σεαυτόν (Gnothi seauton) – Know thyself!”.

Opis:
The transfer of so-called traditional journalistic genres to the Internet usually results in significant changes to their distinctive features. A good example is the Internet report, which simultaneously uses various forms of communication with recipients (e.g. text, film, image) and becomes both multimedia and intertextual material, which results in its hypertextual character. Similarly to any hypertext, because it often has a multimodal structure, it is also a kind of semi-finished product, as it only becomes a carrier of meanings and a complete work during its reception. As a result, extra tasks are set for the recipients. They must even more fully than in the case of classic literature or literary works participate in the process of decoding the meaning and become even more co-creators of the sense of the work that is being read. This article aims to demonstrate the essential features of how reports function on the Internet by referring to two specific materials that fall within the definition of the Internet report. Apart from this, the text attempts to confront the new variety of reporting with selected literary theories, such as the concept of “the death of the author” by Roland Barthes. Lastly, the article aims to cover the characteristics of the different types of recipients of hypertext forms of reporting functioning in an Internet environment.

It is a difficult and full of contradictions dialogue, that used to be interpreted in relation to the uneasy history of the 20th century. The author of the article does not attempt to weaken the role of historical events in Miłosz’s spiritual evolution; she underlines, however, such aspects of his dialogue with Mickiewicz that reveal the deepest similarities and are not subjected to changeable interests. That is how Miłosz’s hesitations can be understood, as his disputes with Mickiewicz are time-bound, but both poets meet also in timeless sphere.

This process is demonstrated on the example of the chosen postmodern fables written by Grzegorz Kasdepke, Marta Guśniowska, Agnieszka Suchowierska.

Opis:
From among around four hundred examples taken from the Bible, mythology and history, which in Sebastian Brant’s The Ship of Fools are designed to instruct and caution, more than twenty come from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Brant does not make references to Ovid’s work and he mentions the poet only once, as the author of Ars amatoria (buler kunst), which brought Ovid nothing but misfortune. Most of them appear in Chapter XIII On Seduction (Von buolschaft) and single ones in Chapters: XXVI, LIII, LX, LXIV and LXVII. The references are allusive and abridged, they concern pathetic consequences of wicked or rash love, jealousy and hatred as well as self-loving and foolhardy imprudence. They stand as codes, which can not be deciphered without knowing the source and it implies that Brant either assumes the reader has the required knowledge or appeals to gain it. It is also possible that he refers to common at that time didactic modifications of Metamorphoses. Problematic and often tragic illustration of human fortunes in Ovid’s work is reduced in Brant’s satire to parenetic formula, which intrigues and is expressed with vivid and crude language. The most explicit example of dissonance between Brant’s and Ovid’s intention is a truly clown like character − Marsyas, who with obstinacy plays bagpipes, a clownish instrument, whereas in Metamorphoses he enraptured people playing his aulos and his death as martyr is mourned by not only nymphs and shepherds, but also by nature. The rights of the genre, in this case of moral satire, proved to be stronger than philosophical meaning of mythological message.

Opis:
Intertextuality seems to be Alan Moore’s trademark. In his most famous comic books and graphic novels, such as V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Lost Girls or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, he often refers to other texts of high and low culture. Therefore, a certain level of cultural competence is required to decode various messages hidden by the British writer. In V for Vendetta intertextuality is employed to convey certain political and ideological messages in a more subtle and indirect way. Through various allusions and quotations, Moore presents his views on the condition of the depicted society as well as on the political clash between a fascist state and its anarchist enemy. Intertextual references are also included in the graphics of the comic book. It is the aim of this paper to discuss if, how and to what extent intertextuality can influence the complexity of the graphic novel’s message and be used to indirectly convey particular political and social ideas.

Opis:
Author tries to explain what are reasons and goals of writing pastiches. He compares theory with his own practice of this form, because moreover writes pastiches himself. First he compares some definitions from English, French, Russian and Polish dictionaries of literary terms and from theoretical treatises (with the theory of parody too). Analysing their similarities and diferences he offers his own definition: pastiche is an interpretation of someone else’s creation, which is made without using metalanguage. Its goals may be serious or amusing: 1) manner of research and interpret of genuine work, 2) manner of proof of mastery of sameone else’s style, 3) to take an advantage of past poetics, 4) to overcome influence of another writer, 5) to reconstruct the genuine work which is not finished by his author or is not complete, 6) to use sameone else’s style for own goal, sometimes contradictory to original work. Except them in this article are presented some strategies to show or conceal the falsification in pastiche. There are strategies of apocryph, of continuation, of hipothesis and of reconstruction. Moreover pastiche can be used as a test of essence of literature.

Opis:
The article revises the existing critical discussion concerning the intertextuality of Cyprian Norwid’s poem “A Dorio ad Phrygium”. The author of the article demonstrates that the piece can be interpreted both from the perspective of the old-Polish intertextuality (his hypothesis concerns Norwid’s inspirational address “from Kochanowski to Rej”) as well as through “self-scrutinizing gestures” of the poet himself, who uses the intertext to refer to his own poetry. By reading the equivocal initial part of the poem, the author traces Norwid’s intertextual affinity with Rabelais, Whitman or Rubens and points to the bawdy and transcendental nature of the work. These tropes explain the earlier radical readings of the poem by Wiesław Rzońca (deconstruction) or Krzysztof Cieślik (anthropology of Ruth Benedict or Clifford Geertz). While keeping these considerations in mind, the author of the article maintains, above all, the inter-textual perspective. The final part of the article juxtaposes the depiction of Serionice from “A Dorio ad Phrygium” with the Dublin of Ulysses and asserts that in both the topography is characteristically multidimensional (early modernist period) and relativistic (late modernist period) in its socio-cultural representation.

En appliquant la terminologie de G. The aim of this article is to analyze the play by Matéi Visniec Hécatombéon, a contemporary variation on the myth of Prometheus, in comparison with Aeschylus’ drama Prometheus Bound, allowing us to observe an interesting dialogue that is developed between the hypotext and the hypertext. Applying the terminology of G. Genette, the analysis seeks to observe how different kinds of transformations present in the hypertext are made, and then to consider a new possible reading of the old text.

The contemporary rewritings of Don Juan’s myth highlight several forms of hybridity and illustrate the stakes involved. The hybridation affects in the first place the sources of the myth since the authors appeal to numerous intertextual references. But the successive transpositions of the mythical scenario also lead to a generic hybridity. This intermediality has a reflexive dimension: it raises the question of the limits of language to talk about the myth and abolishes the frontier between fiction and critical speech.

Opis:
The present article is devoted to a textological analysis of the so-called intertextual proper names, i.e. units that relate to the structure of names that have been constructed earlier. The article attempts to characterize the so-called proprial (onymic) texts with the relations taking place between the hypotext (cf. “source name”) and the hypertext and/or hypertexts (cf. target name) taken into consideration. Considering the way particular texts are derived via a transition of some kind, a number of types has been distinguished: transtextualization, intertextualization, transformation, iconization and imitation. Transtextualisation involves names transferred from one onymic plane to another without any formal change (cf. Polish Pożegnanie z Afryką (Out of Africa) – the title of a film > Pożegnanie z Afryką – the name of a branch of shops in Poland). Transformations are names that have originated as a result of different linguistic transformations of the source text, i.e. the hypotext (cf. Skierniewice – a place name of a town > the Skierniewka – the name of a river). Imitations correspond to names formed in artificial onymic conditions, through analogy to structures already existing in the propial tradition (e.g. Biedaczkowo [Penuryville] – a text in the function of a place name, Bezczelnicki – a joke name to be found in literature). Intextualisations are, in turn, names whose structure contains hypotexts resulting from indirect influence or more or less precise application of their structure (cf. Słoń Torbalski – the name of a fancy leather goods manufacturer from the classic verse by J. Tuwim about its eponymous protagonist, the forgetful elephant, Tomasz Trąbalski). Finally, iconizations are created as a result of a transformation of the structure of pastiche-type hypotext or parody or burlesque (cf. Rozmowy w tłoku < Rozmowy w toku). The article also discusses differences between the so-called classic(archetypal) and prioprial text, as well as the functions of intertextual appellative texts, that involves updating of name-resources of a given system, among others.

The strategies adopted in all versions are compared and evaluated with a view to determining similarities and differences as well as the factors which conditioned the choice of the strategy. Special attention is paid to lacunary connotations evoked by the references at issue.

Works of Paweł Mykietyn belong to the most characteristic trends of Polish contemporary music. His compositional attitude was individualised in the first decade of the 21st century, and today he is recognised as one of the most original Polish composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Andrzej Chłopecki, when characterizing Mykietyn’s music after the premiere of the composer’s II Symphony, compared this work to a “cleverly devised, postmodern toy”. Also Mykietyn’s next, III Symphony (2011), can be considered in the context of the categories of postmodernism and constructivism. This work manifests the postmodern attitude, but it is also marked by strict, “cleverly devised”, constructivist thinking. Its musical language contains intertextual references to hip-hop and rap music; on the other hand, it includes such typical for Mykietyn measures as “(de)gradation form”, “accelerando form”, “permanent accelerando” and dodecaphony, which can be found while analysing the work. III Symphony can be also interpreted in relation to techniques of deconstruction, including both concept and structure of the composition.

Opis:
The topic of this article is the issue of intertextuality in word-and-music works. The analysis of it requires an identification of overtly intertextual units, as well as intersemiotic relations established among them, both in the sphere of linguistics and the poetics of the musical work. In the interpretation of the extratextual meanings of the work the author proposes their examination at four hierarchically dependent levels: (1) of overtly intertextual musical structures, (2) of semantic meanings of the said structures, (3) of the form of the work as an area of activation of the above mentioned structures, and (4) of the ideological/cultural meaning of the work. In the sphere of musical phenomena, overtly intertextual structures may include textural-sound figures, as well as the units of musical form. The sphere of meanings requires the recognition of the sources of semi-osis, semantic functions, and cultural intermediations of the said structures, interpreted on the basis of semiotic methodologies. At the level of musical poetics, the visualization of relations between the individual musical phenomena and their functions in the context of the entirety of the work constitutes the basis for the interpretation of its meaning in relation to the theories of the leading interpreters of postmodernist culture. The Third Symphony for alto solo and symphony orchestra by Paweł Mykietyn (2011) reveals in its structure numerous overtly intertextual units, as well as formal and generic patterns and construction techniques allowing one to determine the cultural meaning of the work in which the composer entered into “a daring dialog with postmodernism”. The concept of the work, a polemic with tradition (interaction of high and popular — youth culture elements), a provocative gesture, of sorts, by the artist, defines the position and the value of Paweł Mykietyn’s Third Symphony in the area of postmodern culture works.

Opis:
The content of this paper belongs to the discussion on the issue of intertextuality, referring both to the Biblical text of the canticle of Mary — the Magnifi cat and to its musical realiza-tions in the 20th century music. In the introduction, the author discusses the term “intertextuality” pointing out its non-musical definitions, and referring to the works of such renown authors, such as R. Nycz, G. Genette, J. Sławiński, and Z. Mitosek. From the point of view of the theory of music, it was not the author’s purpose to over-extrapolate this notion (related to the theory of literature), but primarily to find some specific expressions of “purely musical” intertextuality in certain Magnifi cat compositions. Hence, the attempt to name and order these expressions, as well as to build the parallel between the apparent intertextuality of the Biblical text itself, and the pro-posed intertextuality of the few analysed musical works. The first part of the article, based on stud-ies of leading Biblical scholars (and also on the author’s own research), includes the reconstruction of the dynamics of the canticle of Mary, referred to other Biblical excerpts, taken from the Books of Samuel, Habakkuk, Isaiah, Job, and the Book of Psalms. By identifying the significant influences of Israel’s cultural heritage on the text of the Mag-nifi cat, the article reveals certain so-called “ache-” and “metatexts”. The second part of the study includes the analysis of the selected musical compositions by Christine Donkin, Juliusz Łuciuk, Wojciech Kilar, John Rutter, and Mark Hayes. These musical works are stylistically different, and rooted in separate cultures. The analysis was aimed at identifying the specific (intertextual) features of these musical compositions and at revealing the specific procedures (e.g. citations) that a given composer applied by fusing his own works with the pieces written by others. These decisions, as the article claims, were taken for various, artistically justified reasons.

Opis:
The analytical method used in the text refers to the article by Ryszard Nycz, Intertextual Poetics: Traditions and Perspectives, in which he defines intertextuality as a category defining the construction and meaning of the text (work of art), making its creation and reception dependent on the presence of other texts and architexts. Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 5 “Requiem, Bardo and Nirmanakaya” is noted for the presence of numerous other texts and architexts. These are the ideas of Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, multiculturalism, the reference to the ideas of Romanticism, and to the oratorio genres. The relationship of the 5th Symphony with the ideas of Tibetan Buddhism is reflected, among others, by the use of the texts from The Tibetan Book of the Dead and Shantideva’s Bodhicaryavatara (A Guide to the Boddhisattva’s Way of Life). The connection with the Hindu tradition manifests itself in the use of the texts from the Rig Veda, the Bhagavad Gita, and The Vishnu-Purana. The multiculturalism of Symphony No. 5 is reflected in the use of literary texts taken from a number of different sources. The reference to Romantic style in the Symphony No. 5 is manifested in such features as: melodious vocal parts, neotonality, varied formal structures, predominant use of homophony, contrasting various types of expression in different movements, and the occurrence of great culminations. In the “macroform” of the work the idea of the three parts is highlighted, which binds it to the cyclical form typical of the symphony. As noted by R. Maycock (2002), the sequence of the three themes discussed in the symphony: (1) creation and pre-creation myths, (2) fundamental problems of life and death, (3) visions of apocalypse and paradise and reference to the future, is reflected in the three sections of the composition plan. The relationship with the oratorio genre is demonstrated by setting the piece in 12 vocal-instrumental movements and the important role of the choir.

Opis:
The subject of my research presented in this article, which concentrates on the issue of intertextuality, are the works of three composers who represent a trend in Polish post-modern mu-sic called surconventionalism, i.e.: Stanisław Krupowicz, Paweł Szymański, and Paweł Mykietyn. They developed certain idiomatic composing principles of shaping the structure, architectonics and style of a musical work, which allows one to talk about the poetics of their music. This poetics is based on a dialogue with tradition which manifests itself in intertextual relations. In order to properly capture the characteristics of these composers’ intertextual poetics, the author has taken into account, following Ryszard Nycz’s proposal, the three types of relations: text-text, text--architext, and text-reality. Accordingly, the following issues have been considered: (1) the problem of quotation, (2) references to genre and stylistic archetypes, and (3) cultural relations. The author has also taken into consideration the deconstruction technique which plays a sig-nificant role in the process of composition and reception of surconventional music. The issues related to the problem of intertextual poetics include not only the whole body of characterist-ics and relations of the texts (works of music), but also the ways in which they are understood by listeners who are the participants of a communicative process. Thus, on the one hand, the inter-and architextual references have been indicated, and on the other, the possibilities of recognizing these references by listeners have been discussed.

Pale Fire may be read as an elaborate parody of literary criticism, or even Nabokov’s selfparody. This paper reconsiders the puzzle of identities in the novel in this context, with the trio of the author, the critic/annotator and the mysterious third man tracking the progress of both with clearly insidious intent. This analysis aims to uncover the suppressed trauma of Kinbote’s past, hiding behind Kinbote’s narrative. A memory of traumatic past forces Kinbote into ecstatic fiction-making. He constructs the marvellous Semberland (the land of resemblers) as a bridge between his lonely life in the foreign culture and his obscure past in the culture that no longer exists. This mythologization also mirrors a much grander theme: the theme of death and – always mysterious, never graspable – afterlife, and an attempt to bridge the gap between the quotidian realm of one’s existence and the glorious and unexplainable potustoronnost’, the other side of the mirror, the other side of consciousness.

Opis:
The second novel written directly in French by Atiq Rahimi, A Curse On Dostoevsky, calls on the masterpiece Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. This novel shows various aspects of the hybridization of the author. The Russian novel is manifest in the French novel in two ways: implicitly by the moral reflections on the divine justice and the human justice, and explicitly by many elements of the text (title, epigraph, paratexts, quotations, paraphrases etc.). Being a lot more than a simple pastiche, the French novel is indeed the rewriting of the famous crime committed by Raskolnikov. It is its intertextuality which makes the novel of Rahimi a kind of dialogue with the novel of Dostoevsky on the mode of the rewriting of the reflections and the reformulation of the questions developed in the work of the latter. What are the similarities and the fundamental differences between the character of Rassoul, main character of Rahimi, and that of Raskolnikov, protagonist of Dostoevsky? How has Rassoul become a failed pasticheur? What punishment are they to be subjected to in a country engulfed in an endless fratricidal war? These are the questions to which the present study will seek to find the answers.

Synthesis of arts: literature, film, painting and theatre, which occur in the novel, opens a perspective of intertextuality and provokes questions about ekphrasis, varied materials, ways of experience mediated by dispositives and reflections on humans among other problems. The crucial point in both: Majewski’s novel and this dissertation, is a triptych painted by Hieronymus Bosch – The Garden of Earthly Delight, which gradually annexes the featured world – becomes a basic figure in trying to show, how the aesthetization of reality brings Wolfgang Welsch’s cahegory of an(a)esthetics.

The paper deals with the poetological propositions of one of the major Scandinavian Modernist poets Gunnar Ekelöf. My argument is that Ekelöf was one of those Modernist writers who saw literature from the perspective of a Weltkultur. I’m framing my reading of his intertextual collages, especially A Mölna-elegy in that context. The question of literary predecessors, tradition, dialogue and cultural ancestry becomes extremely important in Ekelöfs poetological propositions. His “ultramodernist” techiques as the use of a wide range of intertextual strategies or cultural recycling, are expressions of a cultural nostalgia rather than a proclamation of an aesthetic revolution. The perspective of a global culture that transgresses the borders of time and space directs the Swedish poet to the conception of poetry as a kind of culture science.

This essay aims to describe the difference between ‘barbarism’ and ‘anarchism’ in contemporary Polish poetry. Analysing the critical voices in the wake of a well-known essay by Karol Maliszewski, in which he coined the term ‘barbarism’ to refer to certain contemporary Polish poets, we come to the conclusion that the distinction between ‘civilised’ and ‘barbaric’ poetry after 1989 has been based solely on the literary personae of the various authors. Thus we claim that the generational shift between the poets of brulion and the younger ‘anarchist’ poets may be seen as leading to a certain new kind of persona, which is, at the same time, more coherent (due partly to their clear political statements) and more independent of the poem (due to their non-literary sociopolitical activities).

Gilbert Keith Chesterton, the author of, amongst others, the Father Brown detective stories is generally analysed, with some exceptions, by Polish criticism in terms of ideology and Catholi- cism. His literary technique is treated with less attention, though his artistic output as such is perhaps valued even more in Poland than in England. This article attempts to fill in the gap by examining the ways in which Chesterton structures some of his stories and the way he introduces and inserts elements of Catholic doctrine into them. This article investigates the recurring motif of various identities for the same character both in selected stories and within the framework of the whole Father Brown cycle. Chesterton’s characters epitomise the dichotomy of human nature: one and the same character may transition from an honest person into a criminal and vice versa. The author also shows the implications of leading a double life and, of course, employs the notion of a double identity as a vehicle for committing a crime.

Travel texts (written by Jáchym Topol, Jacek Podsiadło and Bogdan Trojak) resulting from such a sensual reading naturally refer to both pretexts as well as biographies of the authors visited. It is not important if the travellers meet these authors in person or not. The ways of moving in space are simultaneously cognitive figures of the texts created: deviation from the mainstream of the journey becomes visible both in the digressive nature of the narration as well as in the multiple intertextual connections.

Opis:
Intertextual references as a game suggested by the author and played by the Internet user, contribute to the process of creating and receiving online memes. In their case this intertextual game is more complicated than in traditional literary texts as it refers to different sign systems: iconic and verbal. Frequently on top of referring to online memes the process of discovering intertextual relations necessitates uncovering textual references from outside the Internet. The author focuses on the mechanisms of this intertextual game within specific types of memes. The mechanisms are presented on the basis of a study of one meme series. For intertextual reception of a meme, the clues for the receiver are both on the iconic level (by repeating the iconic element or a part of it) as well as on the level of the verbal text (by repeating the syntactic structures), e.g. questions, parallel structures, an innovative use of the language which involves new morphological and inflectional formations (the use of neologisms and inflectional forms which are not used by native speakers), distortions of the phonetics and spelling which lead to a noticeable formal similarity between the newly created text and the text (or its fragments) to which the intertextual reference is made.

The author of this article analyzes the play The Siege by Evgeny Grishkovets, a renowned contemporary Russian writer. She places it against a background of the rest of his works, exposing essential features that characterize his entire dramaturgy, such as the presence of metatheatrical devices, recognition of the importance of contact with the audience, and emphasis on stage performance. The analysis also draws attention to such elements of the play as non-homogeneous spatio-temoral framework, hybrid composition of characters, and parallel development of plot threads. Special attention is paid to the “imprisoning” of characters in discourses and the ambivalent nature of cultural symbols. As the author points out, The Siege stands out in the Grishkovets’s oeuvre, both by departing from the dominant monodrama form and by juxtaposing key themes recurring in his works: the human experience of war, the reflection on the nature of time, the collapse of language referential abilities, and the impossibility of authentic communication.

Transferring Sienkiewicz’s story into the world of pop culture in case of this musical is done by changing its main subject: now it is love in all its meanings. Looking at this, we can see which elements of the author’s creation seem appealing for the contemporary culture: the word (the widely quoted hipotext), the plot  in a broad outline and the emotion it carries.

The analysis of those works shows that both composers have a different understanding of the essence of music and literature but there are also similarities.
The article analyses the relation of O. Potebnya’s concepts to the theory of intertextuality. The attention to the peculiar interpretation of the notion of “poetic language” by the Russian formalists and their successors, as well as to the development of the dialogical nature of the word and the text, according to M. Bakhtin, reconstructs the genetic connection between the above theoretical systems. The consonance of Potebnya’s ideas with the modern theory is explained by typological convergence. At the same time, the article discusses the productive perspective of the appeal of Potebnya’s ideas in the light of the new literary methodology

The paper surveys intertextual aspects of Bolesław Leśmian’s ballad Dziewczyna across translations into English and Russian (translation series), as well as Czech and German (single renditions). Thematic intertextuality connected with the fairy-tale convention and specific references to philosophical concepts (Descartes, Kant) are discussed. Dialogic relations absent from the original but activated in translations are also indicated (e.g. a Biblical context). The following aspects influencing the rendition of dialogic signals are considered important: metrical restrictions, the unwieldiness of the canonic formulation of intertexts for poetic appropriation, the skill and worldviews of the translators. Thanks to the numerous translations of the ballad, we can ascertain whether awareness and prioritizing of referential qualities change with time, target culture and the translators’ backgrounds.

Opis:
From the 18th century on Arabian Nights  has been influencing European imaginary, especially culture and literature. It created European vision of the Orient as well. In the 20th century popular culture gave high recognisability to many elements of Arabian Nights (such as characters: Sindbad, Aladdin or magical artefacts: a flying carpet, magic lamp). Scheherazade as an allegory for narrative art became the most important figure for scholars studying the book. The paper shows how two contemporary book cycles make intertextual links to Arabian Nights . Orphan’s Tale  by Catherynne M. Valente, Harun and the Sea of stories  and Luka and the fire of Life by Salman Rushdie rewrite the elements of Arabian Nights , such as characters, artefacts and linguistic allusion to the Orient. However, the narration in the works by both writers is completely different: Valente recreated a sophisticated device of narration known from the book, whereas Rushdie gave his novels a simple, linear composition. Scheherazade’s gift to spin story out of a life is needed for different aims. For Rushdie telling fairy tales is useful in writing about life of literature itself, for Valente it is important for creating an alternative to the patriarchal vision of the world.

Contemporary Russian drama enters into a dialogue with literary tradition and in particular with the dramatic one. The works of the classics of modernism, including Anton Chekhov, very often become actualized in recent dramatic texts. For instance, "Tanya-Tanya" by Olga Mukhina refers to the artistic features of Chekhov’s ‘major plays’ and thus, in Natalya Fateyeva’s theoretical framework and terminology, Chekhov becomes a pre-text for Mukhina’s text. The general purpose of the paper is an intertextual analysis and interpretation of the latter play.

The tactic of inquiring reading (close reading, explikation de texte) focuses mainly on the text’s subject – it is beneficial if it is of topical character. It is then easier to find and interprete intertextual connections which put some pieces together. In such reading of the chosen poems – Do Kossowskiej w tańcu by Trembecki and Król zabity by Grochowiak – we can see the classical high style of an enlightened poet and turpism, meaning the aesthetics of ugliness of the modern poet, who takes up the game with literary tradition. In this way, you can manage the history of literature…

Opis:
Benn‘s manifold and excessive intertextuality can be interpreted as his way of writing modern poetry. In comparison with traditional “Erlebnislyrik” he achieves modernity through an alienation of the world using the terminology of positivist medicine in his expressionistic period. Later, face to the disoriented Weimar society he, like many contemporaries, is clinging to the old meanings and forms of myth. During the 50ies he gets involved in the new perception of phraseology of mass media and the appeal of modern everyday life. The return to the lyrical tradition during the 30ies and 40ies is a well-directed borrowing to confirm his own way under the threat of the Third Reich. Thus Benn creates his modern poetry by referring to the insights, experiences, and expressions of other authors that transgress the existing limits in literature and poetry.

The Amphitryon-theme ran through some interesting transformations within German literature. This article explores these variations in a wider comparative context. Instead of a thematological approach – that sometimes emanates from problematic notions of textuality, questionable processes of canonization, and philological and national boundaries – intertextual perspectives and post-structuralist psychoanalysis will be applied to examine the history of the theme. Against this background, the relationships among the characters will be analysed while simultaneously focusing on the processes of staging an identity. Thus, this article strives to prove two things: First of all, that all literary transformations of Amphitryon create a new and specific environment of rules, orders and disorders; thus, they represent rearrangements of the existing power-relations between gods and men. And secondly, that the most exciting aspects of the myth are perhaps only visible when the theme is not perceived within a genetically and chronologically structured history of influences and is taken out of philological and national boundaries.

The aim of the study is to consider feminist retellings of myths and legends. As an example, Margaret Atwood’s book The Penelopiad is analyzed. The interpretation is situated in a broader context of intertextual practices characteristic of the feminist vision of literature. I present the ideas which Atwood shares with authors engaged in women’s movement. Among these there is Atwood’s understanding of intertextuality (noticeable especially in The Penelopiad). Bibliographical basis of the study comprises books which are fundamental to feminist and gender criticism (e.g. Poetics of Gender, ed. by N. Miller, New York 1986; S. M. Gilbert, S. Gubar The Madwoman in the Attic. The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth- Century Literary Imagination, New Haven and London 1984). What is more, the study refers to the books which allow considering the notion of intertextuality (G. Allen, Intertextuality, London and New York 2010, J. Clayton. E. Rothstein (eds.), Influence and Intertextuality in Literary History, Wisconsin 1991) and connecting the interpretation with the problems crucial to contemporary literary studies (L. Hutcheon L. A Poetics of Postmodernism. History, Theory, Fiction, New York and London 1988, B. Johnson, A World of Difference, Baltimore and London 1989).

Opis:
The article attempts to establish the character of references to Norwid in texts by poets representative of Polish modernity, accounting for functions of intertextual allusions, initially in the area of collective consciousness. As it turns out, during the interwar period and the Second World War works by the Romantic master were referenced at all stages of developing a distinct literary identity. Poets would not just read Norwid’s texts, but in fact regard themselves in the mirror of his works. However, after 1956 Norwid’s presence in literary life was rooted in the needs of literary scholars rather than in actual intertextual references. This tendency also manifests in studies of works by individual authors. It does happen – especially when we speak of implicit traces of Norwid in contemporary poetry – that the plane of relations between authors is not addressed by interpreters. Sometimes, dialogue as a research category disappears from their view, while the body of Norwid’s works is treated merely as a context, becoming a kind of mirror meant to display more fully a certain theme or characteristic of somebody’s writing. However, the most important forms of Norwid’s functioning in contemporary times are ones that facilitate meetings(successfulor not), as demonstrated by the fascination with Norwid’s poetry recognizable in texts by authors such as Mieczysław Jastrun, Julian Przyboś and Tadeusz Różewicz.

The author of the article, Walentyna Sobol, analyzes documentary and literary books from Morocco and two émigré writers about Morocco. These are “Spells of Morocco” – the Ukrainian forgotten author Sofia Jabłońska (1907–1971) and “Moon in Tears” – contemporary writer Morocco Ouard Saillo, born in Morocco in 1974. Ouardy Saillo’s book, decorated with photos of the Saillo family, was written in German. For the first time is published in Polish translated by Barbara Otwinowska (published in 2005 in Warsaw). In 2018, in Kiev were published 107 photographs of Sofia Jabłońska from her times of work and travel around the world, including Morocco. The goal of the article is to reveal the phenomenon of persistence and bravery of both writers, different, but sometimes very similar intertextuality . The narrative of the documents is examined using a methodological approach, especially in terms of: “intertextuality is a study of the memory of literature” (Tadeusz Sławek). Using modern research in anthropology, including the lexicon of the culture of memory “Modi memorandi”, the author of the article investigates the phenomenon of intertextuality in the narratives of Jabłońska and Saillo. This comparative study of the autobiographical works of Ukrainian and Moroccan writers in Poland not only reveals the conclusions, but also opens wide research perspectives.

Nowadays, it is hard to imagine internet culture without memes. To achieve a humorous effect, meme creators use various means, displaying unprecedented creativity. They often draw inspiration from cult Soviet comedies by Leonid Gaidai, Georgiy Daneliya, Vladimir Menshov, Eldar Ryazanov, Aleksandr Sery and other famous directors. This article is devoted to the analysis of iintertextual connections in Russian internet memes related to the current COVID-19 pandemic. The intertextual references can be in the form of a frame from a Soviet comedy, a movie catchphrase, or both at the same time. Catchphrases can be used in the analysed internet memes in their original version, or they can undergo various modifications, such as the replacement of some components and/or the extension of phrase composition. The fact of making use of a specific movie scene or catchphrase by meme creators proves that Soviet comedy is still deeply rooted in Russian culture. Soviet comedies begin to “live a new life” in internet memes.

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the linguistic-textual representation of Salvatore in Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose and its Slovene, Croatian, Czech and Polish translations. The first part of the article deals with different linguistic and intertextual layers composing Salvatore’s original utterances, while the second part is devoted to Salvatore’s translated language, concentrating – primarily – on his heteroglossia and intertextuality. Salvatore is a grotesque plurilinguistic and intertextual character born out of the rich erudite immagination of Umberto Eco. The four translated Salvatores appear also as strange babelic monks whose multilingualism expands by adding a dominant Slavic linguistic element to the source-text heteroglossia. The intertextual dimension of translated Salvatores, on one hand, diminishes as most source-text citations blend into the translated linguistic mosaic, but, on the other hand, it also increases by gaining an additional metatextual (translational) dimension and, equally important, by incorporating a substantial part of Eco’s original text.

The aim of this paper is to present the literary theme of hope in the works of the Soviet Russian rock poet Igor Talkov (1956–1991). The poet’s poems as well as fragments of texts from the author’s prose serve as examples. In the course of analyzing the literary legacy of the composer, the author of the article distinguishes the following images of hope: the theme of hope conditioned by striving to fulfil his role in a dignified way in the arena of life; the theme of hope for the immortality of the poet’s fame and poetry; an inverted image of hope, interpreted as a loss of delusions; the theme of hope leading to victory in the unequal struggle of two ambivalent forces: Good and Evil; the theme of hope which is faith in a better life. Moreover, the conducted research shows that the poet, recalling the literary image of hope in his work, repeatedly referred to biblical texts and the works of the authors of the Golden Age, which, as works by Igor Talkov, allows to distinguish another characteristic feature of the presented speech master.

In this essay, the author considers intertextuality in contemporary musical work, conceptualizing it not only as a critical category and as an artistic convention, but also as an aesthetic strategy. Listening for texts, as it were, opens the work for influences and gives it new purposes. The multiple texts, which are mutually interdependent, alter each other’s meaning and are “read” and “re-read” during aesthetic experience. Depending on the listener, these meanings are more or less pronounced; some are seen as primary, while others are seen as secondary. Sometimes they are co-dependent and meaningful together, but sometimes they shy each other out. The multilayered quality of the work is acknowledged and seen as important even before individual meanings can be discovered. The author proposes a look at intertextuality in reference to musical works by Steve Reich, (e.g. Different trains, 1988). The author uses Ryszard Nycz’s definition of intertextuality and confronts it with Umberto Eco’s idea of interpretation and the structural openness of art. Putting forward a concept of listening-in as a necessary element of receiving and understanding certain musical works, she suggests accepting an intertextual aesthetic strategy for a satisfactory aesthetic experience. Assuming the presence of multiple texts, which are different in character and meaning, and accepting their interdependence, changes the reception of the work and colors its qualities. The challenge is not only to seek out different texts hidden behind the purely musical face of the work but to find out the way they influence each other, knowing full well that the major or minor role those texts play depend on the listener as much as on the author.

Opis:
The intertextuality is one of a few terms gaining dominion over a whole contemporary culture. However, as long as literary reportage is considered the traditional mimetic relation takes the first and the last place alike. The main thesis of herein paper is that after the postmodern turn the naive referential analysis of creative non-fiction cannot be the most accurate way of interpreting anymore. Intertextuality appears to be able to refresh some reading methods and make them as adequate as possible in the postmodern reality. Moreover, it is not only about a kind of scholarly designed methodology, but also about a groundbreaking subgenre: an intertextual reportage which bases on the intentionally established relations between some texts. One of the most characteristic representatives of this genre variant is Mariusz Szczygieł whose pathway leads from an ordinary reportage form early 90’s to contemporary intertextual reportages about Czech Republic. Szczygieł is aware of fact that human perception is deeply influenced by some cultural schemes determined mostly by novels, newspapers, electronic media and art. That’s why the intertextual relations in his pieces seems to be even more important than the process of referring to the actual reality. The herein paper follows Szczygieł’s way from modern to postmodern configurations of the literary reportage, reconstructs his vision of the Bohemia with its art and literature and analyses one of his most specific works in terms of intertextuality.

The Alienist
Opis:
The Alienist, a TV series released in 2018, is based on Caleb Carr’s best-sell-ing novel published in 1994. Irrespective of its genesis as an adaptation, presently the TV series generates new senses when watched from the perspective of works that have appeared in visual culture since the publication of the book. This paper sets to demonstrate to what extent the original novel and later the TV production create a mutation of a well-known pair of detectives (Sherlock/Watson) and how the reception of the series may differ from that of the original novel.

The aim of the paper is to analyze the series of poems about Mr. Cogito and investigate the motifs of mirror and mirror reflection, which are important for the construction of identity of the character created by Zbigniew Herbert. Apart from mirror-as-material-object, there is also mirror-as-metaphor, i.e. acts of self-reflection and self-observation. Yet there is another layer of mirrors there, the one located in “meta-text”, where Herbert joins inter-textual games and ironically approaches both his poetical oeuvre and that of his artistic “masters”.

The concept of the Holocaust Babel Library discussed in my article was based on articles and lectures of John Barth, Anna Burzyńska, Umberto Eco and Raymond Federman. I show how this notion has crystallised from the popular postmodernism label that was named the Tower of Babel and had its beginning in 2000s. I follow a 2005 novel − History of Love by American writer Nicole Krauss (Polish, poorly translated, edition was published in 2006) rated among the so-called third generation. I show both the historical aspect of this novel (pogroms of Jews in  Słonim in 1941) as well as its ideological facet. The Holocaust Babel Library in Krauss’ prose is a sign of a funeral ritual consisting in the reconstruction of history from innumerable quotations, allusions and references to books.

Opis:
This essay aims at analysing and illustrating a segment of the post-Soviet short fiction of the contemporary Russian writer Vladimir Tuchkov. It specifically discusses his collection of very short stories And he earned many dollars…: New Russian fairy-tales. These short stories exemplify many characteristics of Tuchkov’s oeuvre more generally. The discussion analyses the satirical contents of these miniature fictions, which the author places in the tradition of the Russian classics and of Russian folklore, within the theoretical context of parody, pastiche, intertextuality, and folklore. Tuchkov’s short narratives create a de-familiarised, quasi-mythological space where pre-modern, Soviet, and post-Soviet times converge. This results in the critical, satirical foregrounding of certain continuities in Russian culture, society, and mentality throughout the centuries despite the enormous political and social change, which it has experienced, as much as constituting, like Russia’s traditional fables, a critical and satirical engagement with contemporary social reality in Russia. The contribution examines the specific intertextuality with a satirical folkloristic genre as a literary expression, which reverberates with a post-Soviet readership, given its inherent concern with social structures. It is suggested that the employment of these concepts and literary forms in this combination serves to reinforce their overall effect of creating a hyperbolised, satirical representation of social reality.

Opis:
In the drama Close City, first published in 2005, Lithuanian playwright Marius Ivaškevičius focuses on the (im)possible connections between Malmö and Copenhagen. The initially realistic setting of a failing marriage in the spirit of August Strindberg and Ingmar Bergman evolves gradually into an absurd spectacle that explores spatial and intertextual interstices. This article investigates how the drama, as a scenic kaleidoscope, elaborates on the influence of imagined geographies in the Baltic Sea region, discusses (gendered) power relations, and questions Scandinavian exceptionalism.

Co więcej, ton pewnych ustępów z Heroes and Villains i The Passion of New Eve odzwierciedla charakterystyczny dla poezji dekadenckiej nastrój smutku i zagrożenia.

Intertekstualni elementi, ki so prisotni v originalu, ustvarjajo dialog z literarno tradicijo in sprejemno kulturo, ker v tujem/drugem kontekstu pridobivajo drugačno, novo interpretacijsko vlogo, funkcinirajo drugače in imajo drugačno vrednost.
The artistic texts which as a part of the intertextuality phenomena refer to other texts, known only in the native literary tradition and culture of the original text, present an enormous challenge for the translator ( in this article the deliberations on this subject are illustrated by the work of Bolesław Leśmian titled "Urszula Kochanowska" in a Slovenian translation of Tone Pretnar). The intertexual elements go into a dialogue with a literary translation and a target culture because in a foreign context they function differently. However, they always have enriching value (at least from the cognitive perspective).

It is a truism that the work of Adam Mickiewicz occupies a central place in Czesław Miłosz’s literary universe. The present paper seeks to investigate one particular Mickiewiczian micro- element that strikingly often recurs in Miłosz’s writings, namely the so-called “kernel” of the Lithuanian forests (jądro gęstwiny). Significantly, while wilderness areas such as woods and forests have always filled the human imagination with awe and fear, Miłosz has turned the Lithuanian “thicket” into one of the cornerstones of his poetic topography, investing its mysterious “kernel” with epiphanic and eschatological potential. Partially medi-ated by some of his other childhood readings Lato leśnych ludzi (The Forest People’s Summer) by Zofia Rodziewiczówna, Na tropie przyrody (On the Trail of Nature) and W puszczy (In the Wood) by Włodzimierz Korsak, Nasz las i jego mieszkańcy (Our Forest and Its Inhabitants) by Bohdan Dyakowski and Soból i panna (The Sable and the Girl) by Józef Weyssenhoff), Miłosz’s mythol-ogization (if not sacralization) of the wildland spaces of his childhood might be said to add a particular (pagan and gendered) twist to the traditional repertory of Christian (u)topography, in particular its rural and urban manifestations (the Garden of Eden and Heavenly Jerusa-lem).

This article examines the literary series of Inquisitore Eymerich by Valerio Evangelisti, a variegated macronarrative, which, resisting generic classification, introduces innovation to the panorama of contemporary Italian fantasy. Departing from the analysis of the salient features of the series such as intertextuality, hybridization, storiographic metafiction, and transfictionality, the article examines closely the areas of postmodern narration and inquires into the role of the fantastic element in Italian literature. Evangelisti makes the most of postmodern narrative strategies and of fantasy’s ability to penetrate various media in order to provide a tool of critical reflection on human history with an emphasis on the phenomenology of power. By interweaving different literary genres and inviting readers to produce their own interpretations in form of fan fiction, Evangelisti creates a new type of committed narrative, post-fantasy, which presents a new conception of postmodern narrative, one that overcomes the barrier between the literary fiction and the genre fiction.

This article discusses the poetics of appropriation of historical and literary material as a way of the reevaluation of the past proposed by M. Tsvetaeva. In the poet’s consciousness, the coexistence and comparison of different times and historical parallels are inevitably linked to her presence and, at the same time, the material employed by Tsvetaeva does not only show any reality, but it recreates reality according to her own vision of this particular material. Tsvetaeva accentuates the primacy of created reality over historical existence. One part of Tsvetaeva’s play Fortuna presents the transformation of the real love story between Izabela Chartoryska and duke Lauzan into a literary history, and finally the process of the disappearance of this story in her real life. ‘Disappearance’ of Lauzan’s image leads the poet in her life and Tsvetaeva becomes engaged with Lauzan by a very idiomatic relationship.

Poezję Jana Polkowskiego łączy z Herbertem wspólny obu poetom program poezji etycznej, charakterystyczną właśnie dla nich pasję przyświadczania podstawowym wartościom i wiarę w ocalającą moc kultury.
Jan Polkowski's poetry is linked to Herbert's through the programme of ethical poetry, which is common to both poets, as well as their characteristic passion for admitting fundamental values and faith in the salvational power of culture. However, an interesting intertextual game, initiated by the younger writer in his poem Przesłanie pana X [The Envoy of Mr X], brings a more nuanced perspective to this simplified image. From the beginning of Przesłanie pana X, it is clear that hope, which Polkowski does not actually reject, seems to be much more problematic in his text than the vision of living in the myths of culture, which emerges from Herbert's work. The image of Polkowski and Różewicz's clear antagonism must also be verified. As the author of Rozmowy z Różewiczem [Conversations with Różewicz], Polkowski allows his older colleagues to drag him into a conversation about poetry and its tasks, outlining not only certain divergences, but also looking for what is close to his heart in Różewicz’s work.

Opis:
The division of texts for the purpose of translation into literary and non-literary ones, based mostly on the dominant language function in a given text type, often leads to a stereotypical understanding of the stance of the translator’s competence. Non-literary text translators who focus entirely on that branch of knowledge that a given text refers to and on related terminology may overlook the cultural and intertextual elements. This not only ignores the intention of introducing them into the text, but also may change the meaning of passages in which they are included. The analysis of a book concerning psychology and psychotherapy: Systems of Psychotherapy. A Transtheoretical Analysis, as representing non-literary texts, and G.K. Chesterton’s detective stories, being examples of literary texts, provides some examples of introducing more or less implicit references to the Bible into psychological discourse and literature respectively. Despite the label of scientific texts, American psychological literature is characterized by numerous hidden quotations from other sources which serve various functions: using the already lexicalised phrase- ology or entering into a polemics with the religious doctrine. Consequently, in translating such texts, translators cannot limit themselves to a thorough knowledge of psychology, psychotherapy and terminology connected with those areas, but must also be observant enough to notice interte- xtual traces and then be able to localize them and interpret them correctly. Otherwise the transla- tion may alter the original meaning or introduce an ambiguity which is not welcome in such texts. Thus ‘intertextual competence’ is by no means reserved for literary text translators for whom this type of expertise is obviously of primary importance.

Opis:
The article is part of a wider study on Latvian cemetery epitaphs which is being carried out by Rita Treija at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art, University of Latvia. The source of the study is a wide material of the Latvian tombstone inscriptions covering the time period from the 19th to the 21st century. The bulk of materials obtained comes from the Archives of Latvian Folklore as well as the author’s private collection. The author seeks to analyse the multilayered nature of the memorial inscriptions on gravestones both from a philologist’s and folklorist’s perspective, focusing mainly on the use of biblical quotations and allusions in the epitaph textual tradition. The textual analysis of Latvian cemetery epitaphs shows that the Bible is an important source of reference used both directly and indirectly in the composition of the memorial texts for the deceased. There are four levels that can be distinguished according to the distance from the original source: (1) direct biblical quotations (with or without references to particular verses of the Scripture); (2) liturgical prayers (excerpted from the ordinary procedure of the public worship, as well as from special funeral and memorial rituals); (3) church songs (quoted from the Roman Catholic or Evangelical Lutheran hymnals); (4) usage of biblical characters and motives in other texts (such as individual prayers, religious poetry, etc.). The presence of biblical quotations and allusions in the epitaphs provides a certain repertoire of gravestone texts. However, besides the manifestations of the religious identity, the material of the Latvian memorial inscriptions shows that there are other approaches in creating epitaph texts, such as quoting Latvian folksongs, mourning lyrics, popular songs, etc. The results of the analysis can be applied in comparative epitaph studies as a Latvian example. The issues discussed in the article may be useful in cultural and folk religion studies, too.

Acon is one of the six eclogues written by Giovanni Pontano, one of the most remarkable humanists of the Italian Quattrocento. In this work, the author presents an image of conjugal love by the usage of a bucolic context, a model of shepherd love and some myths from Ovid’s Meta- morphoses. He also refers to some facts from his own biography (marriage with Adriana Sassone). The pastoral figures who speak in the eclogue Acon are Petasillus and Saliuncus. They reminisce their master Meliseus (Pontano’s alter ego) who used to sing beautiful songs for his beloved wife Ariadna. The topics of those songs were the period of engagement, the first days of marriage and the pain caused by the separation of the spouses.

The creative principles and techniques of Anton Chekhov have proved attractive to modern writers. Many late-20th-century authors, e.g. Tendryakov or Sasha Sokolov, used the naiveté and naturalness of a child’s mind when depicting contradictions and controversial issues. A connection with Chekhov is evident in the development of the theme of a mental institution, its doctors and patients (Makanin, Pelevin). Also the Chekhovian principle of refusal to categorically judge the words and deeds of the characters gains fundamental importance (Dovlatov). It is from Chekhov that modern writers have learnt to present serious psychological issues and world-view questions through commonplace imagery.

Alexander Kushner’s poetry is an endless and timeless dialogue with his predecessors. Alexander Pushkin has a special place among them. Overt and covert references to the author of “Eugene Onegin” are present at various levels of Kushner’s texts – in themes, images, ideas, as well as at the level of formal organization: in language and metrics. The present article deals with the modes of reception and interpretation of Pushkin’s lyrics in the oeuvre of the contemporary poet from St. Petersburg. The analysis focuses on the varied forms of Kushner’s intertextual dialogue with the Romantic poet (quotations, allusions, reminiscences, references both of literary and biographical character). The sources and nature of reminiscences from Pushkin are indicated, such as accepting dialogue, polemics, assimilation, rejection and partial redefinition.

Recognition and reflection of the radially structured semantic intertextual raster in the opera Ariadne auf Naxos Op. 60 by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, are the goals of this paper, with the awareness that ‘reading’ of this complex textual amalgam cannot be comprehensive and that this is only one of the possible ways of looking at different languages, their texts, and relationships in which they come in, with the emphasis on the connection between the music and architectural texts. The focus is to spot some of the paths in this specific music-scenic maze. The recognition of the ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ opera house implies the withdrawal of the parallels between the music-dramatic and the architectural level. The concept of ‘opera within the opera’ is simultaneously present in the musical-dramatic sphere (opera Ariadne in opera Ariadne auf Naxos) and in the architectural sphere (opera/residential house in the opera house). By concurring with the different meaning of the word ‘opera’ which it has in the music-drama (opera as a musical-drama work) and architectural language (opera as an architectural object), we carry out the terms meta-opera ‘per square’ (‘metaopera2’) and meta-opera ‘per cube’ (‘metaopera3’).

Artykuł przedstawia możliwości analizy dyskursu w oparciu o socjologiczną teorię Pierre’a Bourdieu.
The article presents the possible ways of developing discourse analysis on the grounds of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological theory. Comparing Bourdieu’s approach with other perspectives, defined here broadly as critical discourse analysis, the author points out these elements which seem useful in studying various types of texts (written and spoken) from sociological perspective. These observations concern both the processes of production and reception of individual discourses. The author considers quest for naturalized categories organizing the frames of discourses and managing subjective schemata of their perception to be a crucial direction of the proposed approach. Given that social fields should be considered as fundamental spaces of symbolic production, their identification and reconstruction is of primary importance. The analysis of fields and their inter-relations enables the development of a novel approach to intertextual analysis, which can be considered one of the fundamental objectives of CDA.

The first part of the article with the title Reverberations of Caragialism in Andrei Pleșu’s essays, completes the effort of systematizing the Caragialian literary legacy, by adding to the post-Caragialian literary corpus the publicistic essays written by Andrei Pleșu. In volumes such as Faces and masks of transition (Chipuri și măști ale tranziției), Comèdies at the gates of the Orient (Comèdii la porțile Orientului), The public obscenity (Obscenitatea publică), we find sufficient evidence of Andrei Pleṣu’s belonging to the literary trend of Caragialism. In this first part of the article, we point out that essential components from the paradigm of Caragialism, such as the irony and the sarcasm, the politics, the parade patriotism and the gastronomy are alluded to and revalued in Andrei Pleșu’s essays, in a way that highlights both the viability of the model and Pleșu’s endowment with an exceptional humoristic talent and satirical sense, worthy of a literary follower of I.L. Caragiale.

The aim of this study is to discuss the rhetorical strategies and literary sources in Epode 2, Ad fontem Sonam. In patrio fundo, dum Roma rediisset by Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski (Casimir). It opens the possibility of an intertextual reading of the text (Catullus 31, Horace III 13, Ovid Metamorphoses III (407-417). My thesis is that the text, like the Horatian ode, demands a metapoetic reading. The “source Sona” and its waters, wherever located in fact, stand for an allegory of poetic inspiration, to be identified, again as in Horace, with both the poet and his poetry, but probably also with God’s grace. Thus the image of the poet’s motherland takes on a symbolic dimension and may be understood as an expression of the poetic identity of his own, a hallmark of the poet and of his individuality. In this way the poem becomes a kind of prayer and a performative act of speech.

The Chronicles of Narnia has an established position in the canon of children’s literature. However, what on the surface is a fairy tale involving adventures and magic; with children, kings, talking beasts, and wood spirits as main protagonists; is, in fact, a set of stories deeply rooted in Christian and chivalric traditions, containing elements of beast fable and morality tale. The story, according to Madeline L’Engle, depending on the reader's cultural knowledge and experience, may be understood on various levels, from the literal one of an adventure story for children, through the moral and allegorical levels, eventually reaching the anagogical level. While reading The Chronicles, one is able to notice various references to other written works, interwoven into the text, with the Bible, chivalric romances and beast fables being the most prominent sources of intertextual allusions. In The Last Battle Lewis attempts to answer John Donne’s question, “What if this present were the world’s last night?" (Holy Sonnet XIII) and presents a comprehensive image of Narnian apocalypse and life after death in Aslan’s country. The following paper will present the most noteworthy intertextual references in the final volume of The Narniad.

Socially produced ideas can be tracked in individual texts or groups of texts, especially media texts commonly regarded as “[…] moments when the larger social and political structures within the culture are exposed to analysis” (Turner 1996: 88). This inextricable connection between media and culture in modern societies is reflected in the interdisciplinary field of research known as the study of media culture (cf. Following this, the focus of attention of this study are examples of intra- and cross-cultural intertextuality in British, German and Polish Brexit-related newspaper articles.

Opis:
As a poet, Eliot seems obsessed with time: the speaker of "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" keeps worrying about being late, and the passage of time in general as he gets older seems to continuously haunt him. In "The Waste Land" we have another form of obsession that presents itself in form of intertexuality; the many narrators of the poem go back and forth in time and provide almost random recollections of the past or haphazard bits of literary texts that are equally concerned with time. This article aims to look deeper into the importance of the concept time in Eliot's poetry, the two poems already mentioned as well as "Four Quartets" (in which a whole section is devoted to time and its philosophy) and then take the important works of other key figures of Modernism and the movement's characteristics into comparison in order to determine whether Eliot's seeming obsession is a fruit of its era or a personal motif of the poet.

This article analyzes the novel Wilk (English “wolf”), which was written by Marek Hłasko, discovered by Radosław Młynarczyk, and then published only in 2015. The novel depicts the lives of the residents of a Warsaw district, Marymont during the interwar period. The analysis of this text by young Hłasko sheds new light on the current academic criticism of the writer’s works, and shows – sometimes indirectly – his inspiration with the literary representatives of Young Poland – Stefan Żeromski and Władysław Reymont. The discovery of the literary camouflage used by the writer discloses the following components of the Young Poland period: sensitivity to the beauty of melody and image, lyrical description and the question of rapid civilization changes.
