Nowadays intermodal transport is the foundation of international trade. In contrast to traditional transport, this transport seeks to combine various services and resources, thus contributing to the improvement of the entire distribution process. The basis of the interchangeable method for limiting the consequences of road transport is, as far as possible, intermodal transport. However, it should be noted that the implementation of the described system requires not only direct connection of each branch of transport, excellent knowledge of strengths and shortcomings, but also proposing more effective financial solutions and a better level of services. It is important that intermodal transport may play an important role in the exploitation of trade, as well as transit transport through Poland. In 2016, 35 active terminals were located in Poland: 28 of them are road terminals that served rail - road, while 7 other terminals were sea terminals that served sea - road and sea - rail.

Paper presents analysis of intermodal rail transport in selected loading units. The brief description of the loading units is presented. The volume of intermodal rail transport of load units in European countries in 2021 is shown, taking into account mass of transported goods, transport performance and average transport distance. Goods in the intermodal transport are carried out in container, swap bodies, semi-trailers and road sets. The most frequently used loading unit is the container. Semi-trailers is the most often used loading unit in road freight transport. However, semitrailers are rarely used in intermodal transport in most European countries. In the case of Poland, the share of intermodal transport of containers and swap bodies by rail constitutes a significant share in the European market, however, the transport of semi-trailers and road sets is still a rather unpopular form of transport compared to other European countries.

This papers aim is to focus on the specifications of the intermodal services in Slovakia (partly also in the Czech Republic and Austria) as representative of Central Europe as well as on the existing and potential clients of intermodal transport through the region of Southeast Europe. The analysed market has enough potential to offer intermodal services. Currently, the competitive situation compared to road transport is very unsatisfactory. Yet, it is hardly possible to realize a good revenue situation with intermodal transports. Nevertheless, the paper identifies three areas in question where potential was analysed by doing literature researches as well as using expert opinions. New intermodal services from the Adriatic port to Slovakia as well as between between Central Europe (Slovakia) and the southern CIS counties, e.g. Russia have been identified. In addition, new intermodal services into the direction of Romania and respectively Turkey show enough potential to establish several strategies to enhance the transport level within the whole corridor. Especially Turkey is characterized as "chance" for the area in question.

W artykule przedstawiono problematykę terminali przeładunkowych i ich znaczenie w kształtowaniu przewozów intermodalnych. Wskazano na funkcje i zadania terminali transportu intermodalnego przybliżając główne elementy wyposażenia infrastrukturalnego. Dokonano charakterystyki działań Unii Europejskiej w zakresie zrównoważonego transportu, ukierunkowanego na rozwój transportu niskoemisyjnego i ograniczającego zanieczyszczenie środowiska. Przedstawiono analizę przewozów intermodalnych i ich rozwój na przestrzeni ostatnich pięciu lat na tle rynku przewozów kolejowych w Polsce. Dokonano identyfikacji możliwości przeładunkowych terminali transportu intermodalnego.
The article presents the problem of transshipment terminals and their importance in the development of intermodal transport. The functions and tasks provided by intermodal terminals as well as their infrastructure elements were pointed out. Article characterizes the European Union action in the field of sustainable transport, focused on the development of low emission transport and environment pollution. Also the intermodal transport and its development over the last five years against the rail transport market in Poland were analyzed. More over the possibilities of cargo handling in intermodal terminals were identified.

W artykule przedstawiono propozycje poprawy stanu infrastruktury liniowej i punktowej wykorzystywanej w kolejowych przewozach intermodalnych. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiono stan obecny kolejowych przewozów intermodalnych w Polsce, w tym rozmieszczenie terminali intermodalnych na polskiej sieci kolejowej. Opisano również zakres wsparcia finansowego dla przedsiębiorców działających w obszarze transportu intermodalnego w obecnej perspektywie finansowej (2007-2013). W drugiej części omówione zostały kierunki rozwoju transportu intermodalnego w kolejnych latach. Przedstawiono główne założenia wynikające z projektu Programu Operacyjnego Infrastruktura i Środowisko na lata 2014 – 2020 oraz propozycje nowych inwestycji infrastrukturalnych dla tego segmentu przewozów.
Some proposals of state improvement of the line and point infrastructure used in railway intermodal transport have been given in the paper. The present state of railway intermodal transport in Poland including the location of intermodal terminals in the Polish railway network has been presented in the first part of the paper. The range of finance support for entrepreneurs operating in the area of intermodal transport in present finance perspective (2007-2013) has been discussed. The directions of intermodal transport development in the next few years have been shown in the second part of the paper. The main assumptions resulting from the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment in 2014-2020 and the proposals of the new infrastructural investments for this segment of the transport have been presented.

Wroclaw agglomeration is presented in the structure of the national and international transport system as well as directions of development of basic transport modes in Wroclaw. The situation of intermodal transport in Poland against the background of Europe and other countries was presented. Attention was drawn to the technical and technological problems of existing intermodal transport terminals in the Wroclaw agglomeration. The economic premises of the International Logistic Centre in Wrocław and the concepts of the Centre’s construction are discussed. The PKP PLK Wroclaw Osobowice station was proposed as the location of the Logistic Centre, whose main technological element is the intermodal transport terminal.

Infrastruktura liniowa jaka występuje miedzy terminalami i czas przewozu oraz ciężar jaki możemy transportować. Wyznaczony zostanie trend efektywnego przebiegu procesu transportowego. Nasza analiza przedstawi możliwości infrastruktury a zarazem pokaże wąskie gardła jakie występują w tym systemie logistycznym. Przedstawione zostaną wady i zalety a jednocześnie różnice jakie dzielą terminale morskie od lądowych.
Development of intermodal transport enforces the construction of new and upgrading terminals already in operation, both in Poland and in Europe. In that paper will be presented the analysis of the terminal together with the location of the transport corridors which run through Poland. Will be compared marine and land terminals which taking into account the point of infrastructure for the use of each mode of transport. They will be analyzed private and public terminals that are hoping for the development of our economy. A linear infrastructure that occur between the terminals and journey times and we can transport the load. Trend shall be appointed effective transport process. Our analysis will present infrastructure capabilities at the same time shows that there are bottlenecks in the logistics system. We will present the pros and cons at the same time the differences that divide marine from land-based terminals.

Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań z lat 2013–2016 dotyczących transportu intermodalnego w Wielkopolsce, kładąc szczególny nacisk na modele rozwoju i funkcjonowania terminali intermodalnych. Ponadto zwrócono uwagę na bariery rozwoju terminali, jakie napotkają ich operatorzy lub potencjalni inwestorzy. W Wielkopolsce można zaobserwować koegzystencję czterech modeli funkcjonowania transportu intermodalnego. W pierwszym z nich terminal stanowi ekspozyturę kluczowych portów morskich. Rolą terminala jest zapewnienie przedłużenia łańcucha logistycznego portu w regionach śródlądowych. W drugim modelu transport intermodalny staje się poszerzeniem portfolio usług przewoźników towarowych. Trzeci model działalności to uzupełnienie oferty parku przemysłowego czy specjalnej strefy ekonomicznej. Ostatni model to terminale lokowane w pobliżu transportochłonnych zakładów przemysłowych. Badania dowiodły, że wszystkie cztery modele znajdują miejsce na rynku usług logistycznych. Koniecznością jest wypracowanie modelu wsparcia terminali intermodalnych ze środków unijnych: czy inwestować w tworzenie jednego, dwóch dużych terminali w regionie czy sieci kilku lub kilkunastu mniejszych. Oprócz działań inwestycyjnych ważny jest też wzrost świadomości przedsiębiorców oraz przedstawicieli administracji publicznej.
The article presents the results of research conducted between 2013 and 2016 on intermodal transport in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, with particular emphasis on intermodal terminals operational models. In addition, the authors highlighted the barriers to the development of terminals encountered by terminal operators or potential investors. One can observe the coexistence of four models the functioning of intermodal transport in Wielkopolska. In the first one, intermodal terminal is a kind of a gate of the maritime ports. The role of the terminal is the extension of the port logistics chain in the inland regions. In the second model, intermodal transport offers additional services offered by logistics firms. In the third model, terminals offer additional services to the industrial parks or special economic zones. In the last model the terminals are located near the industrial plants with high requirements for transport services. Our study indicated that all four models are operational on the regional market. It also indicated the need for model financial support for terminals from the UE funds, which indicate whether to invest in one or two big terminals in the region or a net of several smaller ones. In addition to the necessity of investment it is to increase of awareness among entrepreneurs and public administration.

The purpose of this paper is to present intermodal transport as a part of the companies' supply chain in which rail transport is not a necessity but a value added element. The European Commission stated in its current "White Paper" as follows: "Railway is sometimes seen, particularly as far as freight transport is concerned, as an unattractive means of transport. However, certain examples of some Member States have shown that railway can offer high quality transport services". In fact, rail freight transport has undergone a large transformation in recent years. A growing number of shippers and forwarders have discovered rail transport as an economically viable and environmentally friendly alternative to road transport for the movement of cargoes.

Transport intermodalny uważany jest obecnie za jeden z istotnych czynników rozwoju towarowego transportu kolejowego w wielu regionach świata, porównywany często do roli, jaką odgrywają koleje dużych prędkości dla rozwoju transportu pasażerskiego. Zarówno na kontynencie amerykańskim, jak też w Europie oraz w Azji rozwijany jest transport intermodalny, wykorzystujący kolej na dużych odległościach do przewozów kontenerów, nadwozi wymiennych, przyczep samochodowych i samochodów. Daje to dla kolei szansę zwiększenia jej udziału w rynku. W artykule przedstawione zostały przesłanki rozwoju przewozów intermodalnych, stosowane formy technologiczne przewozów intermodalnych z udziałem transportu kolejowego oraz wymagania, jakie powinna spełnić kolej w związku z jej uczestnictwem w tych przewozach. Ponadto, przedstawione zostały korzyści dla uczestników intermodalnych łańcuchów przewozowych, a także bariery rozwoju technologii intermodalnych.
In many regions of the world intermodal transport is presently regarded as one of the key factors in the development of rail freight transport; its role is often compared to the one played by high-speed railway in the development of passenger transport. Both on the American continent as well as in Europe and Asia, intermodal transport is being developed: rail - operating over long distances - is being used to transport containers, swap bodies, trailers and cars. This gives the rail opportunity to increase its market share. The article presents the conditions for intermodal transport development as well as forms of technology used in intermodal transport involving rail transport, and the requirements which the rail is supposed to meet as a participant in this kind of carriage. Benefits to the participants of intermodal transport chains, as well as barriers to the development of intermodal technology have also been presented.

Introduction: Transportation services may be described in systemic categories. Intermodal freight transport is a practical expression of the system approach to transport. Development of the intermodal transport system has brought about the need for the comprehensive grasp of transportation processes. Intermodal transport operators manage the whole transportation service organization process. Hence, a question arises whether the service offered by an intermodal transport operator may be interpreted as a complex system service. Systemness of contemporary products and services consists in that their value for clients is predefined by their place in the whole system of products and/or services as well as by the network of their users. The network language, occurring in this paper, is connected with the development of the notion of network, one of the inspiring ideas in organization and management science of the recent years. Methods: Literature on the intermodal freight transport issue has been analysed by the present author for the purposes of this paper, with a view to the developing idea of marketing of system products. Within the adopted interpretative paradigm, qualitative / quantitative research was used. Case study is used, among others, to interpret a particular situation, in a way that the subsequent description appears as the research result and may be recognized as valuable contribution to the existent knowledge. The aim of the paper is to highlight, following the research results, the necessity to treat the service offered by intermodal transport operators in system categories. Such systemic interpretation points both to the multitude of components of the service and to the arising opportunity for comprehensive solution of the clients' needs and expectations. Results: The outcomes reveal that the service offered by an intermodal transport operator may be recognized as the complex systemic intermodal service. They contribute to the knowledge of intermodal transport and serve as the stepping point for the development of the concept of systemic marketing in logistic services. Conclusions: Proper determination of the systemic essence of the intermodal service constitutes the starting point for the identification of the client's problems as well as for the choice of offered solutions, both in the context of essential and additional values. Due to this reason, the management of an intermodal service creation and delivery has the nature of network management, and the values offered by an intermodal service are conditioned by material elements, without which the provision of the service in accordance with the client's expectations cannot be realized.
Wstęp: Usługi transportowe możemy opisać w kategoriach systemowych. Praktycznym wyrazem systemowego podejścia do transportu są przewozy intermodalne. Powstanie systemu transportu intermodalnego spowodowało potrzebę kompleksowego traktowania procesów transportowych. Operatorzy transportu intermodalnego zarządzają całym procesem organizacji świadczenia usługi. Pojawia się zatem pytanie, czy usługę oferowaną przez operatora transportu intermodalnego można traktować jako złożoną usługę systemową. Systemowość współczesnych produktów i usług polega na tym, że o ich wartości postrzeganej dla klientów decyduje fakt, iż funkcjonują one w określonym, rozszerzonym systemie produktów i/lub usług oraz sieci ich użytkowników. Prezentowany język sieci związany jest z rozwojem w naukach organizacji i zarządzania koncepcją sieci, która staje się inspirującą ideą ostatnich lat. Metody: Dla wyjaśnienia problematyki zastosowano analizę literaturową zagadnienia transportu intermodalnego w ujęciu rozwijającej się koncepcji marketingu produktów systemowych. W ramach przyjętego paradygmatu interpretatywnego wykorzystano badania jakościowo / ilościowe. Studium przypadku jest używane np. do opisu badanej sytuacji w ten sposób, że sam powstały opis jest rezultatem badań i może być uznany za wartościowy wkład do istniejącej wiedzy. Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na podstawie wyników badań na konieczność traktowania usługi oferowanej przez operatorów transportu intermodalnego w kategoriach systemowych. Ujęcie systemowe wskazuje na wielość elementów tworzących usługę i wynikające stąd możliwości kompleksowego rozwiązywania potrzeb i oczekiwań klientów. Wyniki: Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, iż usługę oferowaną przez operatora transportu intermodalnego można uznać za złożoną systemową usługę intermodalną. Poszerzają one wiedzę o transporcie intermodalnym stanowiąc tym samym przyczynek dla rozwoju koncepcji marketingu systemowego w usługach logistycznych. Wnioski: Właściwa identyfikacja istoty systemowej usługi intermodalnej stanowi podstawę dla rozpoznania problemów klienta oraz proponowanych mu rozwiązań w kontekście wartości podstawowych i dodatkowych. Z tego powodu zarządzanie tworzeniem i świadczeniem usługi intermodalnej ma charakter zarządzania siecią, a wartości oferowane przez usługę intermodalną są warunkowanie elementami materialnymi bez których usługa dla klienta zgodnie z jego oczekiwaniami może zostać niewykonana.

The study presents the analysis of the possibility of increasing the share of rail transport in the carriage of goods through the development of intermodal transport. The inspiration for discussion were the records of the transport White Paper of 2011, in which it was assumed that by 2030, 30 % of freight carried by road at a distance of over 300 km, will be transferred to the more environmentally friendly modes of transport, especially rail, inland waterways and maritime transport. The paper presents basic data on rail freight in Poland. Particular attention was paid to data on intermodal transport. It presents the basic advantages and disadvantages of rail transport. The main aim of this article was to show that there are possibilities of increasing the share of rail transport in the carriage of goods. For this purpose, an efficient modernization of railway lines and terminals, among other things, must be ensured in order to reduce transport time and handling. It should put systems in place to monitor traffic and track shipments in real time. Increasing the share of rail transport in the carriage of goods would be aimed primarily at relieving road transport, whose negative consequences for the environment and for human life and health are much higher than rail transport.

Opis:

The following paper introduces comparison and evaluation of two intermodal transport technologies. The first of them is “rolling motorway” technology, better known as “Rollende Landstrasse” or ”Ro–La”, while the second one is called pocket wagons technology. We present general characteristics of chosen intermodal freight transport technologies in a form of a brief description of both intermodal technologies. Moreover, we describe initial processes, loading and operations in the case of the two mentioned technologies. The paper contains as well as computing example and the schemes of intermodal freight transhipments terminals for “rolling motorway” and pocket wagons technologies and inevitably means of transport to be used in the technologies. The chosen wagon types taken into consideration are as it follows. In case of “Rollende Landstrasse” technology we chose wagon types of 602S, Saadkkms and Saadkms and in case of the second technology the chosen types of wagons are: Sdggmrss, Sdgnss and Sdgmnss. Different kind of wagons in mentioned technologies are pictured and briefly described. Additionally, freight wagons – potentially used in the mentioned technologies – are evaluated with use of selected methods applicable in evaluation of alternatives. Wagons are evaluated under the specified conditions, especially with taking into consideration chosen operational parameters of them. In conclusion we relate to current condition of internal transhipment terminals in Poland and other aspects that concern them.

Artykuł dotyczy problematyki rozumienia usługi transportowej w kategoriach systemowych. Praktycznym wyrazem systemowego podejścia do transportu są przewozy intermodalne. Powstanie systemu transportu intermodalnego spowodowało potrzebę kompleksowego traktowania procesów transportowych. Operatorzy transportu intermodalnego zarządzają całym procesem organizacji świadczenia usługi. Pojawia się zatem pytanie, czy usługę oferowaną przez operatora transportu intermodalnego można traktować jako złożoną usługę systemową. Systemowość współczesnych produktów i usług polega na tym, że o ich wartości postrzeganej dla klientów decyduje fakt, iż funkcjonują one w określonym, rozszerzonym systemie produktów i/lub usług oraz sieci ich użytkowników. Prezentowany język sieci związany jest z rozwojem w naukach organizacji i zarządzania koncepcją sieci, która staje się inspirującą ideą ostatnich lat.
The paper discusses the interpretation issue of the transportation service concept in terms of a system. Intermodal freight transport is a practical expression of the system approach to transport. Development of the intermodal transport system has brought about the need for the comprehensive grasp of transportation processes. Intermodal transport operators manage the whole transportation service organization process. Hence, a question arises whether the service offered by an intermodal transport operator may be interpreted as a complex system service. Systemness of contemporary products and services consists in that their value for clients is predefined by their place in the whole system of products and/or services as well as by the network of their users. The network language, occurring in this paper, is connected with the development of the notion of network, one of the inspiring ideas in organization and management science of the recent years.

The main objective of the text is to try to carry out the analysis with the predominant objective to try and present in realistic way the factors influencing the choice between a service realised only with the use of a road transport and intermodal transport. The author of the analysis put particular stress on the costs of the carriage service, time of its realisation and CO2 emission. The analysis also aimed at showing which of the presented technologies of service providing is more friendly to natural environment. This is due to the fact that the market for intermodal transport and road transport in Poland, knowledge of the mechanisms of price formation and the costs are still low. It is often difficult to determine the unit price of transport modes or mechanisms of shaping them. This results primarily from difficulties with the calculation of the actual cost of transport, terminal operations, management and other issues occurring in road transport and intermodal logistics functions.

Increasing demand for transport of goods exerts negative influence on the environment. Therefore most European countries divide realization of transportation of commodities between various transport branches by using so-called intermodal transport. Therefore it seems reasonable to carry out an analysis with the predominant objective to try and present in realistic way the factors influencing the choice between a service realized only with the use of a road transport and intermodal transport. The author of the analysis put particular stress on the costs of the carriage service, time of its realization and CO₂ emission. The analysis also aimed at showing which of the presented technologies of service providing is more friendly to natural environment. The results obtained from the comparison of intermodal and road transport for a given distance enable stating that effectiveness of railway-road transport is influenced by 22% lower internal costs than the ones of road transport and by lower emission of carbon dioxide.

Na efektywny przebieg poszczególnych etapów planowania realizacji usługi transportu intermodalnego wywiera znajomość nakładów i kosztów w intermodalnym terminalu przeładunkowym. Zaproponowany model realizacji usługi transportu intermodalnego ładunków jest przykładowym procesem realizacji usługi na rynku transportu intermodalnego.

Efficient transport solutions are based on multimodal systems, with the dominant role of rail and road transport in land versions of the systems and the connecting and directing part of intermodal terminals, transhipment terminals or warehouse centres. The implementation of transport processes is always associated with the risk of lack of timeliness (quality) or threats to people, equipment and cargo (safety) resulting from human, technical, organizational and global factors like pandemics or war. The article contains a risk mapping method in multimodal transport systems configured to estimate the risk of lowering the quality of logistics services (on-time deliveries, etc.). The method combines factors usually considered separately in studies on individual modes of transport. A formal notation of risk factors as a mathematical model was proposed, and a case study was provided to picture the implementation.

Przedstawiono dwunapędową lokomotywę typu 111DE zaprojektowaną na potrzeby przewozów intermodalnych i pasażerskich wraz z jej podstawowymi danymi technicznymi i charakterystykami trakcyjnymi. Opisana lokomotywa dwunapędowa zbudowana została podczas realizacji projektu w ramach Programu Operacyjnego Inteligentny Rozwój nr POIR. 01.02.00-00-0191/16-00 pt. „Platforma lokomotyw z zaawansowanymi spalinowo-elektrycznymi (wielosystemowymi) układami napędowymi”, dofinansowywanego przez Narodowe Centrum Badań i Rozwoju. Wykonawcą powyższego projektu są Pojazdy Szynowe PESA Bydgoszcz S.A. i Sieć Badawcza Łukasiewicz – Instytut Pojazdów Szynowych „TABOR” w Poznaniu.
The article presents the main assumptions of the National Railway Program and the rolling stock status of diesel and electric locomotives in Poland. The article describes the development of intermodal transport in the country and the location of the largest intermodal terminals in Poland. The dual-drive locomotive type 111DE designed for intermodal and passenger transport, along with its basic technical data and traction characteristics was presented as a part of the article. The described dual mode locomotive was realized within the Operational Program Intelligent Development No. POIR. 01.02.00-00-0191/16-00 entitled “Locomotive platform with advanced diesel-electric (multi-system) driving systems”, co-funded by the National Center for Research and Development. The contractor of the project is PESA Bydgoszcz S.A. Railroad Vehicles. and the Łukasiewicz Research Network - Institute of Rail Vehicles „TABOR” in Poznań.

There is a high demand in Poland for new intermodal container terminals. Increased rate of freight transport requires however new solutions for durable roads. Intermodal operations are carried out by swap bodies, trailers or most often containers. The intermodal terminals play the function of a storage, transportation and handling of the containers. The road surfaces within the terminals are exposed to different types of loads due to untypical types of transportation that operates on them. New types of roads demand new design methods that consider loads applied by special types of vehicles (container cranes, types of forklifts called reach-stackers). They also need to consider the method of container stacking, where the local forces can reach up to 1400 kN. The article presents typical loads that can be found in intermodal terminals, including the storing area and maneuvering aisles. The article presents also typical materials used for road construction, as well as method of dimensioning that incorporates different exposure factors. The method allows to design load-bearing and durable road surfaces. The calculations were performed for materials typically used in road construction, as well as in industrial flooring. The study presents a case study calculation of a parking lot designed for heavy load trucks.

New changes and a new way of obtaining EU funding emerged in the intermodal transport sector in 2004-2006 and 2007-2013.The new economic situation requires changes of the ways of obtaining EU funding to subsidise projects involving the development of intermodal transport in Poland. Ponadto opisano charakterystyki trakcyjne lokomotywy i przedstawia podstawowe dane techniczne. W podsumowaniu artykułu nakreślono zalety stosowania lokomotywy dwunapędowej w ruchu kolejowym i potencjalne zadania przewozowe do realizacji. As a part of the article the main assumptions of the project of dual-drive locomotive intended for the passenger traffic and intermodal transport, whose construction, technical and operational parameters will meet the requirements of applicable standards and regulations, are presented. The block diagram of driving system is presented and simulation analyses carrying out during realization of works is also described. The article also contains the descriptions of arrangement of main assemblies and devices in the machine room and in the driver’s cabs. Moreover, it describes the traction characteristics of locomotive and it presents the basic technical data. The advantages of using the dual-drive locomotive in the railway traffic and the potential transport tasks to be realized are outlined in the summary of this article. The described project is realized within the Operational Program Intelligent Development No. POIR. 01.02.00-00-0191/16-00 entitled „Locomotive platform with advanced diesel-electric (multi-system) driving systems”, co-funded by the National Centre for Research and Development. The contractor of the project is Pojazdy Szynowe PESA Bydgoszcz S.A. and ŁUKASIEWICZ – IPS „TABOR” in Poznań.

Opis:

The dynamic development of car transport caused that there are more and more nuisance problems associated with this mode of transport and therefore the ways for solving them are in demand in Poland. Transport system which links the various branches of transport, creating a coherent transport chains is rail and intermodal transport. Supporting the growing importance of rail and intermodal transport is primarily aimed at reducing transport costs by improving its organization and using the most effective means of transport at each stage. Moreover, on the one hand, the basic advantages of intermodality are associated with the use of the most effective modes of transport, and on the other hand, intermodality requires the standardization of products carriage in the form of railway transhipment terminals. As a result, intermodal transport facilitates the management of supply chains, generating significant positive external effects, such as reducing the reliance on the most environmentally harmful road transport or reducing time and handling costs.

Opis:

The intermodal transport segment is a transport market of enormous opportunities. Fast economic development and the related change in transport needs influences the dynamic increase of demand for transport services in combined system, including the use of rail transportation. The transit geographic situation of our country as the eastern European Union border and situation of Polish sea harbours on the north south in the Eastern European Transport Corridor are additional assets. Despite many assets and growth dynamics of the intermodal transport, their share in general transport volume has still been marginal. The intermodal transport segment in Poland requires sustainable development by means of investment outlays as well, e.g. in container terminal, logistic centres and rolling stock, and furthermore efficient support schemes of at least over a decade horizon. Operation of relevant quality line infrastructure of rail transport and nodal infrastructure indispensable for units handling at the junction of road and rail transport makes up a condition for the intermodal transport development. From the cargo rail transport point of view, provision of relevant rail corridors capacity and ensuring satisfactory speed of freight trains are most important.

Formułowane założenia polityki transportowej przywiązują dużą wagę do zmiany struktury gałęziowej transportu. W tym celu wskazuje się na konieczność rozwoju systemów przeładunkowych pomiędzy poszczególnymi gałęziami transportu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem transportu kolejowego. Zarówno literatura, jak i praktyka europejska wskazują na istnienie nowoczesnych systemów w relacji droga-kolej wykorzystujących przeładunek pionowy i poziomy innych jednostek ładunkowych, takich jak kontenery: naczepy samochodowe, nadwozia wymienne, zestawy drogowe. Ich potencjalne zastosowanie staje się szansą dalszego rozwoju transportu intermodalnego w Polsce oraz struktury, jaką on przybiera. Stąd celem artykułu jest przedstawienie typów systemów przeładunkowych i wskazanie ich roli dla kształtowania obecnego i przyszłego stanu transportu intermodalnego drogowo-kolejowego w Polsce.
Formulated assumptions of the transport policy put a lot of emphasis on changing the branch structure of transport. For this purpose, it is pointed out the need to develop reloading systems between individual transport branches, with particular emphasis on rail transport. Both literature and European practice point to the existence of modern systems in the road-railway relationship using vertical transshipments and levels of other cargo units as containers: semi-trailers, swap bodies, road vehicles. Their potential application becomes an opportunity for further development of intermodal transport in Poland and the structure it takes. Therefore, the aim of the article is to present the types of reloading systems and to indicate their role in shaping the current and future condition of intermodal road and rail transport in Poland.

Transport intermodalny pociąga za sobą wiele korzyści zarówno w skali makro jak i mikro. W tym celu należy dążyć do realizacji szeregu kompleksowych działań, zapewniających transportowi intermodalnemu warunki rozwoju, w szczególności dostęp do odpowiedniej infrastruktury. Na efektywność tego typu transportu wpływa między innymi sieć terminali intermodalnych. Słabo rozwinięta infrastruktura uniemożliwia rozwój transportu kombinowanego. W Polsce parametry techniczne, w tym możliwości przeładunkowe i składowe, większości terminali są niewystarczające do obsłużenia ilości ładunków wynikających ze strategii rozwoju transportu. Jednak prowadzone inwestycje w modernizację istniejących terminali oraz tworzenie nowych w znacznym stopniu przyczyniają się do polepszenia sytuacji Polski na europejskim rynku przewozów intermodalnych.
transport infrastructure in Poland Intermodal transport results in many benefits both at the macro and micro level. To do this it should be made to realize a series of comprehensive activities to ensure the conditions for the development of intermodal transport, in particular the access to the suitable infrastructure. The effectiveness of this type of transport depends significantly on adequate network of intermodal terminals. The poorly developed infrastructure makes the development of combined transport impossible. In Poland, the technical parameters, including handling and storage capabilities, of most terminals are insufficient to handle the large amounts of cargo that should be transported according to transport strategy. However, further investments in the modernization of existing terminals and creating the new ones contribute to improve the Polish situation on the European market of intermodal transport.

The article presents the issue of container handling processes at a rail-road intermodal terminal. In the article, we have focused on the problem of a terminal layout design from the point of view of parking lots for external trucks. The main purpose of this article is the assessment of the necessary parking lots for the trucks considering daily turnover of containers and the trucks appointment time windows. We analyze how the length of the truck’s appointment time windows as well as the difficulties in containers loading operations and a number of handling equipment influence the necessary parking lots for trucks in the intermodal terminal. The trucks planned for loading of import containers may arrive at the terminal before the loading moment that is specified in crane operations schedule. The container handling time is given by a probability distribution. The equations defining the most important elements of the considered problem were presented in the general form. The special case of this model has been developed in the FlexSim simulation software. Based on the simulation research and calculations we pointed out that right truck’s appointment time windows can significantly reduce necessary parking lots at the yard. The literature analysis presented in the article indicates that most of the research in the field of intermodal terminal is focused on operations in container ports. There is lack of literature considering rail-road terminal layout planning in terms of the necessary parking lots and truck’s appointment time windows.
W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienie procesów obsługi kontenerów w kolejowo-drogowym terminalu intermodalnym. W artykule skupiono się na problemie projektowania układu terminali z punktu widzenia niezbędnych parkingów dla pojazdów ciężarowych dowożących/odwożących kontenery do/z terminala. Głównym celem artykułu jest wyznaczenie niezbędnej liczby miejsc parkingowych dla ciężarówek, biorąc pod uwagę dzienny obrót kontenerów, a także okna czasowe awizacji pojazdów ciężarowych. Analizowano, w jaki sposób szerokość okien czasowych awizacji pojazdów ciężarowych a także trudności w operacjach załadunku kontenerów i liczba urządzeń przeładunkowych wpłyną na niezbędną liczbę miejsc parkingowych dla pojazdów ciężarowych na placu terminala intermodalnego. Założono, że ciężarówki planowane do załadunku kontenerów importowych mogą przybyć do terminalu przed momentem załadunku określonym w harmonogramie pracy suwnicy. Założono również, że czas przeładunku kontenera wynika z rozkładu prawdopodobieństwa. Równania definiujące najważniejsze elementy rozważanego problemu zostały przedstawione w formie ogólnej. Badane problem zamodelowano w narzędziu symulacyjnym FlexSim. Na podstawie badań symulacyjnych i przedstawionych obliczeń wskazano, że właściwe ustalenie okien czasowych awizacji pojazdów ciężarowych może znacznie zmniejszyć liczbę potrzebnych miejsc parkingowych na terminalu. Analiza literatury przedstawiona w artykule wskazuje, że większość badań w obszarze terminali intermodalnych koncentruje się na optymalizacji operacji w portach kontenerowych. Brakuje literatury na temat układu terminali intermodalnych z punktu widzenia liczby niezbędnych miejsc parkingowych dla pojazdów ciężarowych.

The article shows the analysis of dynamic growth in reference to intermodal transport in Poland against the technologically advanced European and world markets. The authors present the advantages and disadvantages regarding this type of transport. The paper proposes and characterizes a model for calculating intermodal terminal handling possibilities for various conditions of its operation as the terminal investments are very expensive. Their construction and extension is also associated with taking the investment risk.

This article presents the different intermodal transport systems in selected countries in the world, with an indication of their development and impact on environmental protection. The conducted research indicates much faster development of intermodal transport as compared to the transport of goods in other technologies. The studies were based on the latest obtainable statistics on intermodal transport from Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia. In all the cases examined, it is apparent that intermodal transport is supported by state authorities and international intermodal transport associations. The scientific and cognitive value of the article is expressed in the collection of a large number of materials, their systematization and generalization of conclusions. The literature on this subject lacks such comprehensive scientific studies, and this study will therefore clearly fill the research gap.

Intermodal transport and especially container shipments have been characterized by a dynamic growth, both in Poland and globally. One cannot ignore the importance of technical preparation and organization of terminals which perform integrated loading units reloading. Various elements of IT infrastructure have been introduced to seaports for the last years and they aim at improving the working conditions. Ground terminals, usually small reloading centres, most often give up any modern solutions and blame it on the lack of appropriate funds. The paper presents the rules of carrying out a simple simulation the results of which can become useful for improving activities at container terminal.

The paper presents the issue of container handling processes at a railroad intermodal terminal. The main purpose of this paper is the assessment of the handling equipment utilization and the associated energy consumption. The authors analyze how the road vehicle availability at the moment specified in the containers loading schedule influences the total handling equipment operation time as well as the necessary number of handling equipment. It is assumed that vehicles planned for loading of import containers may be late for loading, which causes some interruptions in the loading schedule. Such interruptions are identified with the necessity to handle the next container for which the road vehicle is already waiting, which influences the handling equipment utilization and, finally, energy consumption. The general mathematical model of the problem developed in the FlexSim simulation software was presented. Based on the simulation research, it pointed out that proper road vehicles loading sequencing can significantly reduce handling equipment operation time, and thus energy consumption, costs, and CO2 emissions. The literature analysis presented in the paper indicates that most of the research in the field of intermodal transport is focused on operations optimization in container ports. There are differences between two types of intermodal terminals in operation procedures and rules. That is why the authors decided to undertake the problem of road vehicle sequencing including their random availability and its influence on handling device operation time, which has not been considered in the literature so far.

Increasing exports of goods between countries over long distances and increasing amounts of cargo generated by ports and transported on roads and railways require the organization of cargo transportation using several modes of transport, forcing the construction of places (container terminals) where it is possible to reload them to other means of transportation. An important aspect of cargo transportation by intermodal transport is its proper securing with the use of properly selected packaging and a loading unit. This article shows how to properly prepare cargo for transport. It also presents a diagram of the correct calculations of the permissible masses that may be in the container during transport to prevent overloading of the container and evenly distribute the load so that the reloading devices located in container terminals are not damaged during reloading to another mode of transport. Therefore, appropriate securing of the load against its displacement and damage was also selected.

The article presents the problems of designing intermodal terminals from the point of view of expenditures on construction and equipment as well as costs of its operation. The scope of factors to be considered at the design stage of the intermodal terminal was determined. The principles of calculation of expenditure on terminal infrastructure are presented. Based on these expenditures, the principles of calculating the cost of maintenance of equipment and labour are outlined. In addition, the practical examples of determining the cost of operation of handling equipment and labour costs are presented. The terminal carries out the functions of transhipment of intermodal transport units between means of transport, belonging to different modes of transport and the operations on these units in connection with their storage. Due to the different types of external means of transport operated in the intermodal terminal, a sufficient number of rail tracks, roads lines, storage, and handling areas should be provided. Apart from expenditures and costs, an important element in the design of an intermodal terminal is its location in the logistics network.

The basic criterion for assessing the effectiveness of all the available and proposed solutions must be economical bill, complex conducted both in terms of micro (at the level of each customer) and macro (at the level of the whole transport sector), endearing issues of economic, ecology, social, etc. An important aspect are the additional costs such as those related to the creation of new element of infrastructure, especially point elements of infrastructure.

The dynamic development of transport recorded in recent decades is an important factor in the economic development of the world on the one hand, and on the other hand, it is a significant source of nuisance and environmental problems. The adverse impact of transport can be felt both in the natural environment and in society, where the dynamic development of this sector has enabled significant civilization development, with the effects varying depending on the level of economic development, the degree of advancement and use of the various transport sectors, geographical location (including climate), and also the sensitivity of the elements of the environment. Considering contemporary transport hazards, it is important to prevent them from occurring, and when that is not possible – limiting their impact on the environment and reducing the scale and extent of negative impacts. In the article, the environmental and social nuisance of transport of goods loaded in semitrailers was analysed. The transport of semitrailers using intermodal wagons pulled by the diesel locomotive in accordance with the assumptions adopted in the railway with the maximum length of train composition was taken into account.

Opis:

The railway wagon with a low flat rotatable loading floor was analysed in the paper. Such a structure can be used for transporting various types of vehicles such as tractors, trucks, trailers, semitrailers, cargo containers. The railway wagon allows quick and fast loading and unloading without any platform infrastructure or terminals. Only a hardened flat surface is required. Each railway wagon can be loaded-unloaded individually (no cranes needed). This construction has a wide range of application and is easy to operate. The model of a railway wagon consisted of standard carriages, undercarriages, and a rotatable loading floor was developed. The model was built of rigid solids. Between individual elements of the model, the appropriate joints and contact connections were created. The model was analysed using MSC Adams code, which allows performance of the 3D kinematic - dynamic analyses of the entire model. The analyses were carried out with use of the model of the loaded semitrailer. Passage of the railway wagon with a trailer on horizontal rails, which are the smallest standard arc with a radius 250m, was simulated at different speed. Reactions occurring in couplings of the rotatable loading floor, which are the main element of connection between the rotatable loading floor and motionless undercarriages part of the frame of the wagon, were tested. The maximum velocity at which the railway wagon can move was analysed as well. There was also examined the speed at which the wheels separate from the rails, what results in derailment of the whole wagon.

W referacie zostały omówione zagadnienia związane z definicją outsourcingu oraz jego rodzajami. Wyjaśniona została istota usługi logistycznej z punktu widzenia firmy transportowo-spedycyjnej. Omówione zostały zagadnienia związane z transportem intermodalnym. Celem artykułu było przedstawienie firmy transportowo-spedycyjnej, działającej na terenie Stanów Zjednoczonych, która wykorzystuje transport intermodalny jako główny element swoich działań.
The development of intermodal transport is increasingly becoming the only reasonable solution. It is caused by the rising amount of cargo and goods, growing competition for speed of delivery and the congestion and increasing environmental pollution. The use of intermodal transport as an element of outsourcing logistics services, brings many benefits. The paper discusses issues related to the definition of outsourcing and its types. The essence of the logistics service from the point of view of the transport and forwarding company was explained. Issues related to intermodal transport were discussed. The aim of the article was to present a transport and forwarding company operating in the United States, which uses intermodal transport as the main element of its activities.

The article is a review of the transport problems that appear in a marine intermodal terminal. The importance of intermodal terminals has been increasing since the 1980s as a result of the development of containerized international trade. This increase in the handling of containers cause problems connected with securing adequate space for container storage or efficient usage of available terminal loading equipment such as cranes, AGVs, straddle carriers or terminal tractors with trailers. The equipment of a terminal depends mainly on the size of containers flow. The use of this equipment determine the terminal technology and work organization. That is why the classification of intermodal container terminals is presented in chapter 2. This classification was made according to different criteria. To understand transport problems, the identification of processes performed in the marine intermodal terminal is presented in chapter 3. For the purpose of research an example of an intermodal marine terminal with its individual functional areas is presented. Finally, the literature review on research conducted on the transport processes performed in the terminal are presented in chapter 4. These processes refer to quay side and land side horizontal transport operations. Additionally, the arrangement of containers at the storage yard was investigated.

The article presents functioning of the intermodal terminals in Poland. The paper shows causes why the container terminals are not fully exploited. To improve quality services provided by terminals should improve the state of railway infrastructure in Poland. The modern trackage will affect on efficiency of terminals prospect and will increase competitiveness of polish intermodal transshipment points on the international arena. The investment of PKP PLK S.A. will improve flow of goods and secure of the movement in main transport corridors.

Opis:

Ensuring transport safety is one of the key areas of transport companies' operations. Management and organization processes not only in the intermodal transport are associated with decision-making in regard to adequate load securing, which is exposed to the inertia forces resulting from the movement of transport means. Regardless, the responsibility of individual entities in the process and the applicable insurance, the basic aspect to ensure transport safety is the correct securing of the cargo. In the article, the authors present elements of calculation models for different methods of securing cargo. Calculations were performed for the selected type of load on the specific semi-trailer meeting the requirements of the XL Code adapted for intermodal transport. The analysis of safety management in transport in the aspect of decision-making about the method of securing the cargo was also made.

Celem artykułu jest pokazanie braków w infrastrukturze terminalowej służącej obsłudze transportu intermodalnego w Polsce oraz wskazanie lokalizacji nowych terminali. Zinwentaryzowano infrastrukturę terminalową i obliczono wskaźnik gęstości terminali kontenerowych według województw. Ponadto zbadano dostępność terminali – liczoną odległością drogową z ośrodka gminnego do najbliższego terminalu. W analizie uwzględniono terminale zagraniczne, których zasięg oddziaływania obejmował terytorium Polski. Przeprowadzone badania potwierdziły, że sieć terminali w Polsce jest wciąż niewystarczająca. Dodatkowo większość terminali ma niewielkie zdolności przeładunkowe. Infrastruktura tego typu koncentruje się w rejonie największych aglomeracji. Do największych miast położonych w znacznym oddaleniu od terminali kontenerowych należą m.in. Bydgoszcz i Białystok. Wskazano, że należy wesprzeć inwestycje w infrastrukturę terminalową na obszarach o słabej dostępności do tego typu obiektów.
The aim of the article was to indicate deficiencies in the terminal infrastructure used in intermodal transport in Poland and to indicate the location of new terminals. Terminals infrastructure has been inventoried and the density index of container terminals according to voivodships was calculated. Also, the availability of terminals has been examined – calculated by the distance from the commune centre to the nearest terminal. The analysis included foreign terminals whose scope of impact covered the territory of Poland. The conducted studies confirmed that the terminal network in Poland was still insufficient. In addition, most terminals had little transhipment capacity. Infrastructure of this type was concentrated in the area of the largest agglomerations. The largest cities located far away from container terminals were for example Bydgoszcz and Bialystok. It was indicated that investment in terminal infrastructure should be supported in areas with poor accessibility to such facilities.

Opis:

Intermodal transport networks, as examples of business networks created in supply chains, are differentiated not only due to types of key resources in the organization, but also due to such things as network structure, the nature of the organizations involved, the types of relations they have, and the roles of individual actors in the network. The business network is understood as a dynamic system whose configuration depends on the fulfilment of particular tasks and the competencies of the organizations which form them. Such networks are inherently temporary, because a new task can initiate the creation of completely new inter-organizational bonds or change the type of pre-existing relations between network nodes. The cooperation of enterprises in a freight transport network compels one to look at the problem of knowledge management in a wider context. The paper focuses on the first stage of knowledge management, which is knowledge acquisition in an organization and its environment. The paper presents the idea of gathering knowledge, and identification of the sources of disruptions in an intermodal network.

Omówiono usługi zachodzące w procesie transportu, które dotyczą funkcjonowania terminala kontenerowego i na podstawie wybranych usług scharakteryzowano przepływy komunikatów pomiędzy interesariuszami, zarówno pod względem treści jak i formy przekazu komunikatu.
The article presents the issue of message exchange in the transport process at the inland container terminal. The characteristics and division of inland terminals were presented and the cooperating entities were identified. The services involved in the transport process that deal with the operation of the container terminal are discussed. Basing of the selected services, the flow of messages between stakeholders has been characterized, both in terms of the content and the form of communication.

Rozwój europejskich korytarzy transportowych wymaga współistnienia i współdziałania różnych sektorów transportu. Jest to możliwe wyłącznie w ramach projektów wspierających operacje logistyczne o charakterze intermodalnym. Politechnika Białostocka Wydział Zarządzania jest jednym z uczestników programu Rail Baltica Growth Corridor, którego jednym z celów jest pobudzanie transportu towarowego w regionie Morza Bałtyckiego. Uczestnikami programu są zarówno instytucje akademickie w krajach regionu, jak również samorządy i organizacje biznesowe. Jednym z czynników stymulujących rozwój transportu kolejowego w regionie wydaje się być większa integracja różnych środków transportu, w tym transportu kolejowego i drogowego w ramach zintegrowanych łańcuchów transportowych. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie aktualnego stanu międzynarodowych przewozów towarowych w Polsce, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem transportu intermodalnego w ramach europejskiego korytarza transportowego Rail Baltica. Cel został zrealizowany poprzez studia typu desk research na podstawie analizy materiałów Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego, Urzędu Transportu Kolejowego oraz materiałów zawartych w formie elektronicznej na stronach internetowych wiodących operatorów kolejowych w Polsce. Rezultaty opracowania materiałów źródłowych posłużyły do sformułowania wniosków o potencjale rozwojowym technologii transportu intermodalnego w zakresie kolejowego projektu Rail Baltica.
The development of European transport corridors requires the coexistence and interoperability of different transport sectors. This is only possible within the framework of projects to support the operations of intermodal logistics. Bialystok University of Technology Faculty of Management is one of the participants of the Rail Baltica Growth Corridor program. One of its objectives is to stimulate freight transport in the Baltic Sea region. Participants of the program are both academic institutions in the countries of the region as well as local governments and business organizations. One of the stimulants of rail transport in the region seems to be closer integration of different modes of transport, including rail and road transport in the integrated transport chains. The purpose of the article is to describe the current state of international freight in Poland, with particular emphasis on the development of intermodal transport within the European Rail Baltica transport corridor. The goal of the article was achieved through desk research based on the analysis of the relevant documents, Central Statistical Office data, Office of Rail Transport data and the contents of the websites of the leading rail operators in Poland. In conclusion, the potential for the development of intermodal transport technologies in the area of railway Rail Baltica project is assessed.

Intermodal transport in Poland is still not a common solution. It’s development is conditioned by many factors, which are mostly a group that inhibit it’s development. The article aim is to present the results of research on the determinants which influencing the intermodal transport development in Poland. In addition the development scenarios based impact of identified factors for intermodal transport has been prepared.

Wskazano bariery intensyfikacji i unowocześniania tego sektora w Polsce na tle zmian obserwowanych w funkcjonowaniu intermodalu w Europie Zachodniej. Omówiono wybrane przykłady innowacji technologicznych i organizacyjno-informacyjnych związanych z realizacją przewozów i usług intermodalnych.
The article outlines and presents significance of intermodal transport to Europe's transport systems. It proves that - provided that the same International Transport Unit (UTI) is used throughout the multi-branch infrastructure of the delivery chain -intermodal transportation is one of the safest and most efficient methods of long-distance, international shipment of goods. The article describes Polish experiences and perspectives for development of intermodal transportation. It points out barriers to the sector's intensification and modernization in Poland in the context of changes observed in the operation of intermodal transportation in Western Europe. The article discusses selected examples of technological, organizational and informational innovations in intermodal shipment and services.

This paper aims to analyse the planning of chemical transports shift from road to the more complex multimodal freight transport, and presents a toolbox developed to support the participants in the process. In literature the research problem of multimodal freight transport planning is analysed mainly from mathematical models’ perspective. There is a lack of studies focused on multimodal transport chain collaboration and the tools supporting it. Within the framework of research conducted during the ChemMultimodal „Promotion of Multimodal Transport in Chemical Logistics” project, within INTERREG Central Europe Programme, the research team identified challenges related to modal shifts in the chemical industry, and next developed the toolbox addressing these challenges and supporting participants’ collaboration on multimodal chemical freight transport planning. The toolbox embraces: (1) consulting services, (2) planning guidelines, (3) the Intermodal Links platform, which suggests intermodal connections between two points, and (4) a CO2 calculator. Conclusions from the first pilot tests showed the necessity of a complex approach to the process of modal shift planning. Transport managers testing the toolbox the most appreciated the consulting services, which include a marketing platform integrating chemical producers and distributors, logistics companies, carriers, terminal operators, rail network operators and others. This platform is used to share information on current transport patterns, existing potentials, and possible actions to establish and promote modal shift.

W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję rozszerzenia zastosowania Hyperloop w transporcie towarów i osób. Kapsuły Hyperloop mają poruszać się z maksymalną prędkością od kilkuset km/h do prędkości dźwięku, więc powinny znaleźć zastosowanie w szybkim transporcie na odległość od kilkuset do kilku tysięcy kilometrów. Obecnie, takie potrzeby zaspokajają linie lotnicze i linie Kolei Dużych Prędkości (KDP), które oferują przejazdy z mniejszą prędkością, ale mogą odbierać i dowozić pasażerów lub ładunki bliżej miejsca rozpoczęcia podróży o raz miejsca przeznaczenia. Przedstawiona koncepcja polega na skonstruowaniu i wykorzystaniu intermodalnych kapsuł Hyperloop, które pozbawione elementów napędowych mogłyby być wykorzystane, podobnie jak tradycyjne kontenery, do szybkiego transportu towarów, a w dalszej perspektywie osób. W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe wymagania dla kapsuł oraz środków ich transportowania, takich jak pojazdy Hyperloop, specjalizowane samoloty, specjalne (odpowiednio zaprojektowane do przewozu kapsuł) składy pociągów KDP, a także siodłowe ciągniki drogowe lub jednostki pływające wykonujące przewozy w zakresie „ostatniej mili”. Opisano również korzyści wynikające z konstrukcji i zastosowania kapsuł intermodalnych i przeznaczonych dla nich środków transportu. W podsumowaniu oceniono perspektywy wdrożenia nowej gałęzi transportu intermodalnego, która przy jednoczesnym zastosowaniu współczesnych metod i środków informatycznych może przyczynić się do szybszego transportowania towarów i osób nie tylko dzięki skróceniu czasu przejazdu (Hyperloop, KDP, samo lot), ale również dzięki skróceniu czasu operacji w punktach przeładunku kapsuł, które mogłyby być transportowane od miejsca początkowego do docelowego bez przesiadek lub przeładunku. Zdaniem autora, takie rozwiązanie w pierwszej kolejności umożliwi szybki transport towarów do ośrodków, gdzie nie będzie terminali Hyperloop, a docelowo przyspieszyć transport osób wzbogacając i uzupełniając rynek przewozów.
The paper presents the concept of extending the use of Hyperloop in the transport of goods and people. Hyperloop capsules are to move at a maximum speed from a few hundred km/h to a speed of sound, so they should be used in the event of the necessity of fast transport for a distance of several hundred to several thousand kilometers. Currently, such needs are met by airlines and High Speed Railways, which offer rides at a slower speed, but can receive and deliver a passenger or cargo closer to the point of departure and destination. The presented concept is based on the construction and use of intermodal Hyperloop capsules, which without drive components could be used similarly to traditional containers for fast transport of goods, and in the longer term for people. Th e paper presents basic requirements for capsules and means of transporting them, such as Hyperloop vehicles, specialized planes, dedicated trains of High Speed Railways, as well as road tractors or ships performing transport in the „last mile” area. Th e paper discusses the benefits resulting from the design and use of intermodal capsules and means of transport dedicated to them. In the summary, the prospects for the implementation of a new intermodal transport mode were assessed, while using modern IT methods and IT means, may contribute to faster transport of goods and people not only due to shortened travel time (Hyperloop, High Speed Railways, planes), but also due to shortened operation time in points reloading capsules that could be transported from the starting point to the destination without changing or reloading. Such a solution can first solve the problem of fast transport of goods to places, where there will be no Hyperloop terminals, and ultimately accelerate the transport of people. This solution enriching and completing the transport market.

The object of the paper is to investigate the strenght of a separated subsystem of a wagon for transport of trucks semitrailers. The wagon designed in the Department of Mechanics and Applied Computer Science, Military University of Technology, allows easy and independent loading, transport and unloading without any special equipment or additional platform infrastructure. It is possible to utilize it for transport of various vehicles types such as tractors, cars, semitrailers, containers, heavy equipment. The tests presented in the paper concern a wagon separated construction element – a side lock. It is a key subsystem of the platform allowing transfer of its loads generated in the transport position (a wagon ready to go) to the form of longitudinal forces operating in the sides of the structure. The locks are simultaneously the most strained parts of the wagon. There were carried out the numerical analyses and experimental studies of a single lock were carried out. Owing to the application of Aramis non-contact optical system of strains measurement, the lock deformations as well as the areas of the minimum and maximum main deformations were defined.

Dla Polski stanowi on szansę na rozwój licznych terminali, centrów logistycznych i parków magazynowych oraz usług logistycznych.
Article describes the role of European transport corridors in the development of logistics services in Poland. Particular attention was paid to the Baltic-Adriatic transport corridor allowing for the acceleration of the development of intermodal transport. For coastal regions in the vicinity of the Tri-City, Szczecin and Świnoujście, it is a chance for dynamic development of port transshipments, logistic services and the entire maritime economy, which is of great importance for these regions. For Poland, it provides an opportunity for the development of numerous terminals, logistic centers and warehouse parks as well as logistic services.

This article presents managing changes, challenges and possibilities of intermodal nodes and network in a still transitional region of South-East Europe in order to assure sustainable cargo mobility in this part of Europe. The main thesis that transport and logistics sector in Northern and Southern European regions are completely different, using different infrastructure and the degree of automation, and with completely different managing philosophies has been persecuted. Consequently a research of sixteen main port systems in the region has been performed. According to obtained analyses, national states and economies have strong impacts on the development of national infrastructure and managing it. In addition, traditional managing philosophies are still very important, where the state has the power to decide when and how organizational and structural changes will occur. The private capital did not enter the intermodal infrastructure significantly over the last twenty years of transition. This is reflected in scarce competition and slow development. Intermodal nodes must cooperate between each other and develop possible synergies because according to the results obtained almost 90% of all traffic going through ports in South-East Europe is for local economies. The concept of nodal distribution is not present; therefore, logistics optimization is possible and inevitable. For this reason a model of port classification has been worked-out, where all sixteen ports have been classified according to their actual position and regional role.

The problem considered in this paper consists of planning and routing rail-truck intermodal shipments from a set of suppliers to a set of clients. The delivered quantities have to follow a truck-rail-truck intermodal path. There are three constraints to satisfy: the satisfaction of the demand is mandatory, each request should be delivered by its due date, and the capacity of a train cannot be exceeded. The objective function to minimize is a weighted summation of the cost and the risk. The former component concerns the fixed and variable transportation costs associated with trucks and trains, while the latter associated with dangerous goods is non-linear for trains. We propose a graph model to represent this problem and a tabu search metaheuristic to tackle it. Numerical experiments on realistic data are provided and discussed.

The concept of intermodality has gained key importance in the sustainable mobility strategy of the European Union. In the past two decades, different types of intermodal passenger terminals (IPTs) have been built in many European cities. These facilities provide possibility for passengers to change transportation mode or route in a short time and connect long-distance transportation services with public transportation modes under one roof. IPTs, however, are more than just hubs in the transportation network, but, due to their size and special location in the city, they are landmarks of cities. In addition, IPTs host not only transportation services but also different types of commercial and convenience services used both by passengers and local people. This study focuses on classifying IPTs based on their hierarchical position in the transportation network and determining which type is the most generally located in European mid-sized cities. Then, an investigation is carried out to map those commercial and convenience services that are the most installed in such IPT types. Finally, three European IPTs located in mid-sized cities and one in a large city are analysed to reveal the similarities and differences in the commercial and convenience services they host. This study found that such commercial and convenience services are most suitable for installation in IPTs that are related to transportation services, do not require a substantial amount of space, and do not block or obstruct the movement of people. Furthermore, as a component of the comprehensive planning documentation, a preliminary commercial feasibility study should be produced for each IPT.

An attempt is made to determine the forecast of intermodal transport in Poland. The basic undertakings determining the development of intermodal transport in Poland are indicated. On the basis of the experience of selected Western European countries, general conclusions regarding the development of intermodal transport in our country are formulated.

The only solution to the growing problem of transport infrastructure congestion is the intermodal transport. With the sharply increasing number of vehicles on the roads and the ever decreasing possibilities for creating enough new resources to cater to demand, road traffic threatens to come to a grinding halt. Clearly other transport modes - especially railways, inland waterways and sea shipping, will have to play a greater role, if we are to avoid the chaos that looms ahead. The major obstacle to the smooth implementation of the plans in regards of intermodal transportation is the lack of a strategic plan, which should include an analysis of regional needs of individual parts of the country, and the demand for such transport. To cope with the extra traffic prompted by economic growth, different modes need to combine their services to create a sustainable and efficient transport system. And this system must be environmentally-friendly and not put the competitiveness of the European economy at risk. For this purpose the European Government and UE members have to concentrate on a law regulation in order to avoid problems with proper intermodal transport implementation.

The manuscript is focused on the design of methodical procedure to locate container reloading station of national importance in the examined country. Slovakia represents the investigated country where ten container reloading stations , specialized above all in transshipment of loading units, are currently in operation. The introductory parts of the manuscript outline the most important concepts associated with the very term of intermodal transport, container reloading stations in the given country as well as a brief literature review in a given context. The following parts discuss the specification of relevant data and methods for this study as well as a description of the general procedure of multi-criteria evaluation of alternatives; namely consisting of, identifying a set of alternatives (Slovak regions), establishing a set of criteria and determining the weights of such criteria. The last part of the manuscript addresses forming a criteria matrix and subsequent calculations in order to search for the most suitable region when applying particular techniques of Operations Research. Specifically, the weights of criteria being determined based on the Saaty quantitative pairwise comparison method, and the final procedure in the context of selecting the most suitable alternative is suggested by using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (also called as the TOPSIS method).

Sporządzono przykładowy wzór kwestionariusza ankiety badania oceny zadowolenia klienta z realizacji usług intermodalnych na przykładzie przedsiębiorstwa świadczącego usługi drogowo-kolejowe, umożliwiający w przyszłości dokonanie oceny jakości obsługi klienta w usługach transportu intermodalnego. Zaproponowano próbę oceny terminalu przeładunkowego pod kątem przebiegu realizacji usługi intermodalnej, a w efekcie finalnym, wpływu na obsługę klienta, na jego satysfakcję ze świadczonej usługi lub też niezadowolenie z realizacji usługi intermodalnej.
This article contains an assessment of customer service for the cutting–edge delivery chain strategy implemented by partner cooperation. A model survey questionnaire was prepared to study the customer satisfaction with intermodal service implementation based on the example of an enterprise providing road and railway services. Its aim is to enable to assess customer service in intermodal transport services in the future. An attempt at assessing the reloading terminal with respect to the intermodal service performance and, consequently, to the effect on the customer service, customer satisfaction with the service provided or dissatisfaction with the intermodal service performance was proposed.

Opis:

The aim of the article is to present a problem of an intermodal connection, linking two different European regions, i.e. economically developed and developing countries. The authors identified determinants of technological and economic nature, which aim to achieve a desired economic efficiency of the intermodal transport. The economic imbalance of different regions in Europe refers to the following issues: the imbalance of the flows of cargo, lack of the uniform technological standards and differences in the economic environment. During the conducted research, authors analysed the cost of intermodal connections based on the use of three rail-road technologies dedicated to transport of semi-trailers. The analysed parameters included: distance of transport, mass of cargo, investment and operating costs. The calculations allowed would formulate conclusions and recommendations necessary for supporting conditions, which should be met, in order that the intermodal transport can effectively compete with the pure road transport.
Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie problemu uruchamiania połączeń intermodalnych łączących dwa różne regiony europejskie, tj. rozwinięte gospodarczo i rozwijające się. Zidentyfikowano czynniki o charakterze technologicznym i ekonomicznym, które sprzyjają osiągnięciu pożądanej efektywności ekonomicznej transportu intermodalnego. Nierównowaga gospodarcza punktów nadania i odbioru przejawia się brakiem zbilansowania masy ładunkowej, brakiem jednolitych standardów technologicznych oraz różnicami w otoczeniu gospodarczym. W ramach badań przeprowadzono analizę kosztów trzech technologii szynowo-drogowych do przewozu naczep siodłowych. Analizowane parametry dotyczyły odległości przewozu, kosztów inwestycyjnych i eksploatacyjnych, przewożonej masy ładunkowej. Przeprowadzone obliczenia pozwoliły na sformułowanie wniosków i rekomendacji dotyczących warunków koniecznych i wspomagających, które powinny zostać spełnione, aby transport intermodalny mógł skutecznie konkurować z transportem drogowym.

W artykule opisano główne korytarze transportowe w kierunku wschód – zachód przebiegające przez Polskę. Przedstawiono dane dotyczące transportu intermodalnego w Polsce w 2011 roku, w tym liczbę przewiezionych jednostek TEU oraz pracę przewozową. Następnie opisano terminale intermodalne znajdujące się na obszarze oddziaływania korytarzy transportowych wschód – zachód oraz oceniono ich lokalizację oraz niektóre parametry techniczne. Wskazano również kierunki rozwoju funkcjonowania terminali intermodalnych, między innymi pod kątem ich lokalizacji.
The main transportation corridors in east — west direction leading through Poland have been described in the paper. The data referring to intermodal transport in Poland in 2011, including the number of carried TEU and transport volume expressed in pass.-km have been presented. Then, the intermodal terminals located in transportation corridors basin have been described, and their location and some technical parameters have been assessed. The direction of intermodal terminals functional development in future taking into account, among others, their location have been given.

Od kilkunastu lat podejmuje się działania, których celem jest odciążenie dróg kołowych i przeniesienie części ładunków z transportu drogowego na bardziej przyjazne dla środowiska gałęzie transportu, w tym między innymi na kolej. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono definicje transportu intermodalnego, omówiono sytuację towarowego transportu kolejowego w Polsce na tle innych gałęzi transportu i dokonano analizy rozwoju rynku kolejowych przewozów intermodalnych w naszym kraju na przestrzeni ostatnich lat.
Long-term economic growth and dynamic development of trade have result in increased transport operations, carried out mainly by road. Excessive traffic on the roads has negative consequences for the environment and also for society. For several years, efforts were aimed at mitigating roads and transferring part of freight from road to more environmentally friendly modes of transport, including rail transport. This article presents the definitions of intermodal transport, discusses the situation of rail freight transport in Poland comparing to other modes of transport. The authors also describe the development of the rail intermodal transport in our country in recent years.

Opis:

The increasing importance of intermodal transport in Europe requires an alternative way of designing new logistics solutions to ensure sustainable development, mobility and, in particular, optimal transport costs. The aim of the paper is to design a model for connecting inland navigation into the European intermodal transport system. The paper presents a proposal for the agent-based simulation of container barge navigation on TEN-T (Trans-European Transport Network) corridor Rhine – Danube. A theoretical basis in the field of network design and simulation is also presented.
Rosnące znaczenie transportu intermodalnego w Europie wymaga nowych opcji alternatywnych rozwiązań logistycznych na rzecz zrównoważonego rozwoju, zrównoważonej mobilności, a w szczególności optymalnych kosztów transportu. Celem artykułu jest opracowanie modelu podłączenia żeglugi śródlądowej do europejskiego systemu transportu intermodalnego. Przedstawiono propozycję symulacji w systemie intermodalnym dla TEN-T trasy Ren – Dunaj. Przedstawiono również podstawy teoretyczne projektowania sieci i symulacji.

W artykule przedstawiono tendencję zmian w przewozach ładunków transportem kolejowym w Polsce w latach 2004 - 2020. Stwierdzono, że spadki przewozów ładunków masowych nie są rekompensowane zwiększeniem przewozów intermodalnych. W przewozach ładunków niemasowych istotną rolę odgrywa segment przewozów wagonowych rozproszonych. Jednak obecna organizacja tych przewozów nie jest konkurencyjna w stosunku do transportu drogowego. Alternatywą dla przewozów wagonowych rozproszonych ładunków niemasowych może być transport intermodalny, ale w formie sieciowej. Zaprezentowano sieciową organizację transportu intermodalnego z terminalami przeładunkowymi w relacji kolej – kolej. Sieciowa organizacja transportu intermodalnego powinna zwiększyć jego dostępność dla potencjalnych klientów transportu kolejowego, również tych, którzy obecnie korzystają z usług transportu drogowego.
This paper presents the tendency of freight rail transport in Poland in the years 2004-2020. It was stated that the decrease in bulk transport is not compensated by the increase in intermodal transport. In non-bulk freight transport the segment of distributed wagon transport plays an important role. However, the current organization of these transports is not competitive with Road transport. An alternative to dispersed wagon transport of non-bulk cargo may be intermodal transport, but in a network form. A network organization of intermodal transport with rail-to-rail transhipment terminals is presented. Network organization of intermodal transport should increase its accessibility for potential customers of rail transport, including those who currently use road transport services.

Opis:

The object of the paper is to build a numerical model of a railway wagon and perform statics calculation. The examined railway wagon is designed to transport interchangeable containers in ACTS (Abroll Container Transport System). The essential matter of such reloading is placing the container on a special rotating platform, which enables horizontal reloading of the load on the truck. The carriage is equipped with a flat frame cooperating with two bogies and three mobile platforms rotated in respect to central knots in order to simplify the process of loading and unloading of the interchangeable containers. A numerical model was verified and validated by experimental and numerical tests. Particular attention was paid to the support model in a contact place of the frame-carriage and bogies. The paper presents the results of static calculations prepared in accordance with relevant standards for this type of construction. The numerical model was loaded according to the requirements of PN-EN12663 standard specified for the F-I vehicle and BN-77/3532-40 standard. The finite element method was used for numerical analysis. A discreet FEM model was developed with the aid of MSC Patran pre-processor, while MSC Nastran code was applied for simulations. The results of calculations are presented by displacement and stress characteristic. Strength of construction was determined based on results.

Opis:

A prototype railway wagon with a rotatable platform for an intermodal system is developed in Military University of Technology. The special railway wagon is equipped with a rotatable low flat loading floor. It can be used for transporting various types of vehicles, for example, tractors, trucks, trailers, semitrailers, cargo containers. The special wagons allows quick and convenient self-loading and unloading of vehicles and containers (no cranes needed); no platform infrastructure is required, only hardened flat surface; there is no need for hubs, terminals or special logistics; each wagon can be operated separately. A considered wagon consists of the following elements: chassis with biaxial standard Y25 bogies, frame, platform body, pneumatic systems, buffer devices, other external devices, electric equipment and hydraulic systems. A mechanism blocking rotation of a rotatable platform during transport of the load (typical semitrailers) is very important from a functionality and strength point of view of the considered wagon. Construction of such a lock allows only transmission of longitudinal load. Based on the performed FE analysis and strength tests of the wagon, it was verified that the most strenuous component of the wagon with a rotatable loading platform is a connector (lock) coupling the side of the rotatable platform with the over bogie part of the frame wagon. The selected aspects of numerical and experimental studies of the prototype railway wagon and its components are presented in the paper. FE analyses of the side lock element separated from the wagon structure are discussed as well.

This article presents technical requirements for planning and designing of intermodal terminals. The most challenging issue is to combine both rail and road infrastructures in the relatively small area including the features of the vehicles used in transportation and freight processes such as the size. The conclusions are based on the experience gained during realization of domestic and foreign investments.

Zaprezentowano również wybrane problemy w transporcie kontenerowym oraz ich rozwiązania, które są obecnie stosowane.
The paper presents the trends and the functioning of sea-land container shipping. It reviews the tools that increase the efficiency of container transport and the benefits of enterprise- wide integration of transport-related businesses as well as the potential benefits of integrating enterprise information systems. The ways of organization of the supply chain, the internal organization of container transport companies and some solutions to improve the operations necessary to handle the container were presented as well as selected problems in container transport and their solutions, which are currently applied.

Intermodal transport becomes increasingly popular in cargo transport. This article describes the role of the inland terminal in intermodal transport. Both logistical systems, and inland terminals, together with the movement of loads represent also the flow of information. The purpose of this article is to characterize an information subsystem in the container terminal, as well as to develop a schedule of tasks in this subsystem.

Sustainable development is becoming a paradigm of civilisation changes of the contemporary world. Transport must be sustainable in the light of the challenges ahead. One of the most forward-looking types of transport, in terms of economy and ecology, namely intermodal transport, i.e., transport which uses more than one mode of transportation, has been recently gaining in importance. The purpose of this article is to present the role and importance of intermodal transport in Poland in the context of sustainable development. The first part of the study concentrates on the analysis of the issue of intermodal transport development, taking into account the assumptions of the policy of sustainable development. The further part of the study presents the essence of intermodal transport and its development potential in Poland, identifying the basic advantages and barriers in this area. The author has indicated the conditions that have shaped intermodal transport market and defined areas where changes and innovations need to be put in place to enable sustainable development of the intermodal market in the country. Intermodal transport is still struggling with many barriers, but the increasingly better infrastructure and policies of the European Union, which creates sustainable transport, have a positive impact on the growth of transport cohabitation. Based on the results of the conducted research, it can be concluded that there are both favourable external conditions and prospects for the intermodal transport development in Poland.

Intermodal transport has been one of the most supported forms of transport in the programs of EU transport policy and national conceptions of the policy. The effects of this support is still limited. By 2030 it is expected to improve the competitive position of intermodal transport in mature markets with innovation and technological progress and organizational. Intermodal transport market in Poland is a young market, which is characterized by a small, but steady growth. An increase in this type of transport in the overall transport of goods , but the share of intermodal transport performance in freight transport performance in Poland amounts to less than 5 % ( the highest percentage of intermodal freight services characterized by foreign shipowners FTP sea-about 14 %). In this article, the author analyzes the current conditions shaping the intermodal transport market, and defines the areas in which it is necessary to implement changes and innovations that enable the sustainable development of the intermodal market in Poland. The strategic objective of the development of intermodal transport in Poland is to create favorable conditions for the technical, legal, organizational , economic and financial implications for the dynamic development of the intermodal transport system , so that their share of rail transport in 2020 reached the average level of the European Union in 2000, such as 10-15 % in terms of tonnage. (Tomasz Szmid 2012) The condition of the available infrastructure and various instruments, including financial ones, ensuring increased availability of intermodal services are also of decisive importance.

The article presents the problem of containers storage on a storage yard in an rail-road intermodal land and the emission of harmful exhaust gases into the atmosphere. This issue was considered from the point of view of the distance traveled by transshipment devices, the duration of loading work and the resulting energy expenditure and CO2 emissions. The research was dictated by the current limited number of publications in the area of the distribution of containers on storage yards in rail-road intermodal terminals. The vast majority of the literature is devoted in this field to marine intermodal terminals, which operating characteristics are different from inland terminals. The importance of this problem resulting from the growing turnover of containers transported by rail transport was also pointed out. The systematic increase of this type of transport and the depletion of the intermodal services' operating capability makes it necessary to improve the processes taking place in the storage area. The possibility of improving these processes in addition to the use of computer tools is also realized through the use of modern transshipment devices. Depending on the area of their operation and the scope of their application, these devices use various types of power supply, which affect environmental pollution. In the case of gantry cranes considered in this article, their power supply may come from both combustion engines, hybrids and electric engines. Therefore, from the point of view of minimization of harmful exhaust gases emissions into the atmosphere, in the article, the problem of choosing the device for carrying out transshipment tasks was also taken up. For the purposes of the research, the processes of container handling in the rail-road intermodal terminal have been presented in detail. A review of literature in the field of container storage methods and strategies was carried out. The considered container reloading processes in the wagon-yard relation were modeled in the FlexSim simulation environment. The constructed simulation model was used to develop 5 variants of the distribution of containers on the storage yard as a function of their location on the train. Container deployments on the storage yard were carried out for both random and fixed distribution of containers on the train. In the case of a random arrangement of containers on the train, the tests were carried out for 100 replications. On the basis of simulation tests, the distance covered by the transshipment device (RTG crane) and the time of carrying out the loading tasks in particular variants were determined. Using the crane data provided by the crane manufacturer, the energy expenditure was calculated in individual variants for different power supply methods (combustion engine, hybrid, electric engine). The obtained results allowed the selection of the best strategy for containers storage, taking into account the amount of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere by transshipment devices.
W artykule przedstawiono problematykę składowania kontenerów na placu składowym w lądowym terminalu intermodalnym i związaną z tym emisją szkodliwych związków spalin do atmosfery. Zagadnienie to rozważano z punktu widzenia dystansu pokonywanego przez urządzenia ładunkowe, czasu trwania prac ładunkowych oraz wynikającego z tego wydatku energetycznego i emisją CO2. Przeprowadzone badania podyktowane były dotychczasową niewielką liczbą publikacji na temat badania rozmieszczenia kontenerów na placach składowych w lądowych, kolejowo-drogowych terminala intermodalnych. Zdecydowana większość literatury poświęcona jest w tym zakresie morskim terminalom intermodalnym, których charakterystyka pracy różni się od tej w terminalach lądowych. Wskazano także na istotność tego problemu wynikającą z rosnących obrotów kontenerów przewożonych transportem kolejowym. Systematyczny wzrost tych przewozów i wyczerpywanie się zdolności obsługowych terminali intermodalnych powoduje konieczność usprawniania zachodzących tam procesów. Możliwość usprawniania tych procesów oprócz zastosowania narzędzi komputerowych realizowana jest także dzięki wykorzystaniu nowoczesnych urządzeń przeładunkowych. Urządzenia te w zależności od obszaru ich działania i zakresu ich zastosowania wykorzystują różne rodzaje zasilania, które w większym, bądź mniejszym stopniu wpływają na zanieczyszczenia środowiska. W przypadku rozważanych w niniejszym artykule suwnic jezdniowych, zasilanie to pochodzić może zarówno z silników spalinowych, hybrydowych jak i silników elektrycznych. Stąd też z punktu widzenia minimalizacji wielkości emisji szkodliwych związków spalin do atmosfery w artykule podjęto także problematykę wyboru urządzenia do realizacji zadań przeładunkowych. Na potrzeby badań szczegółowo przedstawiono procesy obsługi kontenera w lądowym terminalu intermodalnym. Dokonano przeglądu literatury w zakresie metod i strategii składowania kontenerów. Rozważane procesy przeładunku kontenerów w relacji wagon-plac składowy zamodelowano w środowisku symulacyjnym FlexSim. Zbudowany model symulacyjny posłużył do opracowania 5 wariantów rozmieszczenia kontenerów na placu w funkcji ich rozmieszczenia na pociągu. Badania rozmieszczenia kontenerów na placu składowym wykonywano zarówno dla losowego jak i ustalonego rozmieszczenie kontenerów na pociągu. W przypadku losowego rozmieszczenia kontenerów na pociągu próby wykonywano dla 100 powtórzeń. Na podstawie badań symulacyjnych określono dystans pokonywany przez urządzenie przeładunkowe (suwnicę RTG) oraz czas realizacji prac ładunkowych w poszczególnych wariantach. Wykorzystując podawane przez producenta suwnic dane o wielkości zużywanej przez suwnicę energii obliczono jej wydatek energetyczny w poszczególnych wariantach dla różnych sposobów zasilania (silnik spalinowy, hybrydowy, elektryczny). Uzyskane wyniki pozwoliły na wybór najlepszej spośród rozważanych, strategii składowania kontenerów na placu przy uwzględnieniu wielkości emitowanego przez urządzenia przeładunkowe CO2 do atmosfery.

Rail transport is one of the branches of transport included in the group of land transport, and its operation is related to the transport of people and cargo by means of rail transport on a specially designated railroad built for this purpose. The article presents the classification of transported cargo in rail transport, the characteristics of the rail transport market in Europe, as well as the results of the analysis of the rail transport volume in Poland in 2010-2021. This analysis included an assessment of the following features: mass of transported cargo, performed transport and operational work, the average distance of cargo transport for a group of cargo transported by rail and the volume of intermodal transport. The obtained results allowed to conclude that the transport of goods by rail is systematically increasing. Moreover, intermodal transport is developing well.

This model optimizes port hinterland intermodal refrigerated container flows , considering both cost and quality degradation, which is distinctive from the previous literature content in a way that it quantifies the influence of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in different setting temperature on intermodal network planning. The primary contribution of this paper is that the model is beneficial not only to shippers and customers for the novel service design, but also offer , for policy-makers of the government, insights to develop inland transport infrastructures in consideration of intermodal transportation. The majority of models of multimodal system have been established with an objective of cost minimization for normal commodities. As the food quality is possible to be influenced by varying duration time required for the storage and transportation, and transportation accompanied with refrigeration producing more CO2 emission, this paper aims to address cost minimization and quality degradation minimization within the constraint of CO2 footprint. To achieve this aim, we put the quality degradation model in a mixed-integer linear programming model used for intermodal network planning for cold chain. The example of Dalian Port and Yingkou Port offer insight into trade-offs between transportation temperature and transport mode considering CO2 footprint. Furthermore, the model can offer a useful reference for other regions with the demand for different imported food, which requires an uninterrupted cold chain during the transportation and storage.

The article deals with the problem of the appropriate transport mode choice in establishing efficient export overseas container groupage lines. The focus is on understanding the present transport network setup in the region of the Eastern Adriatic, which should enable cost- and time-efficient operation of LCL (Less than Container Load) services. The survey among LCL operators, NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carriers) operators and forwarding companies provides a comprehensive overview of the possibility of introducing new LCL lines through the ports of the Eastern Adriatic coast. The study exposes the barriers LCL operators face in maintaining efficient overseas LCL export services, especially in the initial stage when starting with new lines. Initial low volume of small consignments should be transported by LTL (Less than Truck Load) in precarriage transport; thus, the research analyses actual modal split choices and eventual limitations from price and time perspectives. The study brings novelty in the understanding of the actual organisation of transport chains regionally and the bases for transport community decisions for future efficient establishment of new LCL lines.

W Polsce funkcjonowało zaledwie kilka multimodalnych centrów logistycznych, natomiast na rynku powierzchni magazynowych dominowali deweloperzy przemysłowi, którzy posiadali w 2012 r. obiekty w 150 lokalizacjach. Około połowa z nich znajdowała się w pobliżu terminala kontenerowego, a 15% posiadało własną bocznicę kolejową. Infrastruktura logistyczna skoncentrowana była przede wszystkim w konurbacji górnośląskiej, aglomeracji warszawskiej i w jej sąsiedztwie, aglomeracji wrocławskiej oraz w centralnej Polsce. Kolejowe przewozy intermodalne intensywnie rozwijały sią między portami morskimi a terminalami lądowymi w Polsce. W mniejszym stopniu kolej obsługiwała transport intermodalny z Polski w kierunku wschodnim (Rosja, Ukraina, Chiny).[...]
The paper analyses the distribution of terminal and storage infrastructure relative to each other as well as directions and major railway routes of intermodal carriage. There were only a few multimodal logistics centres operating in Poland. The warehouse market was dominated by industrial developers, which in 2012 had their facilities in 150 locations. Approximately a half of those centres were located at a short distance from the nearest container terminal and 15% had their own railway sidings. Logistics infrastructure were concentrated primarily in the Upper Silesian conurbation, Warsaw metropolitan area, Wroclaw agglomeration and central Poland. Railway intermodal transport intensively developed between seaports and inland terminals in Poland. In a lesser extent rail connection served intermodal transport from Poland to east (Russia, Ukraine, China).

This article presents a broad perspective on a maritime car terminal’s role in finished vehicle logistics with an aim to elaborate the process when a terminal changes its role from an inbound intermodal node to an outbound intermodal platform. Through the analysis of the maritime car terminal in Koper that occupies the 9th position among top European ports in handling light vehicles, a comprehensive view of process re-engineering is provided. The research analyses specific inbound and outbound processes and real-time decisions that influence the terminal’s productivity and satisfies stakeholders’ business expectations. The proposed business process re-engineering (BPR) model for an outbound car terminal highlights the directions of future management decisions to position the terminal as an export oriented intermodal node. The article offers a theoretical and practical contribution to efficient FVL management.

Opis:

Współcześnie najważniejszym kryterium oceny jakości transportu stała się kompleksowość świadczonych usług. Ich wyrazem jest intermodalność, w której zakłada się stosowanie środków przewozowych różnych gałęzi transportu. Ponadto z transportem wiąże się nie tylko załadunek i wyładunek towarów, ale również składowanie, magazynowanie oraz obsługa: spedycyjna, celna i dokumentacyjna. Przedstawione zadania są coraz częściej wykonywane w ramach centrów logistycznych. Z jednej strony centra umożliwiają integrację poszczególnych rodzajów transportu, co istotnie przyczynia się do optymalizacji procesu dystrybucji. Z drugiej strony intermodalność zwiększa dostępność transportową centrum logistycznego, co wpływa na zainteresowanie nimi operatorów logistycznych. Wpływ transportu intermodalnego na funkcjonowanie centrów logistycznych jest jednak zagadnieniem słabo rozpoznanym w literaturze przedmiotu. Z tego powodu celem artykułu jest identyfikacja znaczenia transportu intermodalnego jako elementu sprawnego funkcjonowania centrów logistycznych.
Nowadays, the most important criterion of evaluating the quality of transport is comprehensiveness of provided services, understood as intermodality. Intermodality is based on combine various branches of transport. Furthermore, transport is not only connected with loading and unloading of goods, but also storage, stock-keeping and service: forwarding, customs or documentation support. These tasks are more and more carrying out within the scope of logistics centers. On the one hand logistics centers enable the integration of individual types of transport, which significantly contributes to the optimization of the whole distribution process. On the other hand, intermodality increases transport accessibility of the logistics center, which has an impact, which affects the interest of logistics operators. However, the literature quite poorly presents the impact of intermodal freight transport on the functioning of logistics center. For this reason, the aim of this paper is to identify the meaning of intermodal freight transport as the element of efficient logistics center.

The subject of the article is the new Silk Road, which can connect Europe with China by building a highway. Main aims of that project are to enable transporting goods by lorries in the shortest possible time and building new transshipment terminals. Transport na Odrze sukcesywnie zanika. W latach 70. była ona dobrze wykorzystywana jako droga śródlądowa, ale od 2012 roku, kiedy to przetransportowano ostatnie tony węgla na trasie Gliwice–Wrocław, nie można mówić o regularnym transporcie wodnym śródlądowym. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest wykazanie, że Odrzańska Droga Wodna (ODW) może być istotnym elementem intermodalnego łańcucha logistycznego i wykorzystanie jej może przynieść wiele korzyści zarówno podmiotom, jak i przedmiotom łańcucha. Na podstawie analizy i wykorzystania metod dywergencji podjęto próbę wykazania, że ODW nie posiada istotnych ograniczeń, które uniemożliwiałyby transport intermodalny. Zaproponowano rozmieszczenie punktów styku na znacznym obszarze zachodniej Polski, co niewątpliwie spowodowałoby zmniejszenie natężenia ruchu drogowego na istniejących szlakach. Określono warunki, jakie powinna spełniać ODW jako potencjalne ogniwo intermodalnego łańcucha transportowego.
Transport on the Odra river has been gradually declining. In the 1970s, the river was used as an inland waterway, but since 2012, when last tons of coal were transported from Gliwice to Wrocław, we cannot talk about regular water inland navigation. The aim of this article is to prove that the Odra Waterway (ODW) can be a significant element of an intermodal logistic chain and that its usage can bring many benefits both for entities as well as for objects of the chain. On the basis of analysis and using methods of divergence, it was proven that ODW has not got any vital limitations that would disable intermodal transport. It was proposed to place points of contact on the substantial area of western Poland, which would decrease traffic density on existing routes. One determined conditions which ODW as a potential link of an intermodal transport chain should meet.

W artykule zwrócono uwagę jak ważne jest nauczenie spedytorów i transportowców wykorzystywania nowoczesnych programów informatycznych do oceny: koszów przewozu (Map&Guide, kalkulatora stawek przewozowych PKP, kalkulatora wykazu odległości taryfowych międzynarodowych), czasu przewozu, ale i oceny emisji gazów cieplarnianych w trakcie przewozów (EcoTransIT World). Pokazano analizę procesów transportowych przewozu towarów w systemach drogowym i intermodalnym, zleconych firmie spedycyjnej, a realizowanych w wybranych korytarzach transportowych. Analizę oparto na kryterium: kosztu, czasu i wpływu na środowisko. Celem analizy, a także całego artykułu było wskazanie jak za pomocą narzędzi informatycznych można precyzyjnie pokazać przewagi transportu intermodalnego nad drogowym dla wybranych branż.
The article highlights the importance of teaching forwarders and transporters how to use modern computer programs to evaluate the following: baskets carriage (Map & Guide, calculator freight rates station, calculator, list of tariff distances international), time of transport and the assessment of greenhouse gas emissions during transport (EcoTrans IT World - calculator greenhouse gas emissions). The article shows the analysis of transport processes in the system of the carriage of goods by road and intermodal shipping company commissioned and carried out in selected corridors. The analyses in the article are based on the criteria as: cost, time and environmental impact. The aim of this article and objective of analysis was to demonstrate how use of modern IT tools can precisely show the advantages of intermodal transport over the road transport for selected industries.

Rozpoczęte w 2009 r. polsko-holenderskie projekty badawcze z udziałem Instytutu Kolejnictwa, są kontynuacją wielowiekowej historii wymiany handlowej między Polską i Holandią. W celu zwiększenia wymiany handlowej między zachodnimi i wschodnimi krajami Unii Europejskiej, do istniejących już korytarzy transportowych C-E20, C-E30 oraz ERTMS F, w 2010 r. opracowano pierwszy projekt korytarza łączącego Polskę z Holandią. Na podstawie analizy danych statystycznych GUS i EUROSTAT, dotyczących przewozów towarowych pomiędzy Polską i Holandią, stwierdza się, że od chwili dołączenia Polski do Unii Europejskiej, popyt na transport między obu krajami wzrasta średnio 17% na rok. Zauważa się szybki rozwój przewozów morskich oraz niski, chociaż stosunkowo stabilny udział transportu kolejowego w międzygałęziowym przewozie towarowym między Polską i Holandią. W celu lepszego wykorzystania potencjału kolejowego transportu towarów między tymi krajami, dokonano porównania ofert przewozów konkurencyjnych gałęzi transportu (kolej, samochód, transport morski) oraz zidentyfikowano bariery w rozwoju transportu kolejowego. Podczas realizacji od 2010 roku projektu badawczego Instytutu i holenderskiej firmy NEA, szczególną uwagę zwrócono na poprawę jakości, skuteczności i przepustowości przeładunkowej terminali intermodalnych oraz współpracę pomiędzy terminalami i pozostałymi uczestnikami transportu intermodalnego. Na podstawie opracowań UIC, w ścisłej współpracy z polskimi operatorami intermodalnymi, dokonano oceny zdolności przeładunkowej siedmiu terminali w Polsce w zakresie przewozów towarów między Polską i Holandią. Z przeprowadzonych symulacji wynika, że do 2030 roku, należy zwiększyć przepustowość przeładunkową czterech z siedmiu terminali. Wydaje się, że właściwą płaszczyzną działalności jest wzmocnienie współpracy między uczestnikami rynku, zarówno na poziomie terminali intermodalnych (współpraca między zaangażowanymi stronami w celu dostosowania do właściwych potrzeb klienta), jak i na poziomie całego rynku przez upowszechnienie informacji na temat oferty przewozowej. Przedstawiono propozycje działalności, które w warunkach holenderskich były bodźcem rozwoju sektora międzynarodowego transportu intermodalnego.
Freight handle between Poland and the Netherlands are centuries old and in some way the research projects undergone by the Railway Institute in that field can be considered as a legacy of this tradition. In 2010 a first draft of rail corridor was presented to both Polish and Dutch ministries on the basis of the network of existing rail freight corridors (among other C-E20, C-E30 or ERTMS F) that were drawn in order to improve freight transport across the European Union on an West - East axis. While analysing statistics data provided GUS and EUROSTAT by on freight transport (weight of goods), one can easily notice that handle between Poland and the Netherlands has been firmly growing (average 17%/year) since Poland joined the European Union. Turmoil may have been observed over the last few years as a side-effect of the European-wide economic crisis. However two issues have been identified in the field of Polish - Netherlands freight transport: on the one hand, quick increase of the share market of maritime transport and on the other hand low - though somehow stable - share of rail transport. As a consequence, an extensive market study has been performed in order to make use of the theoretical potential of rail for freight transport between Europe’s biggest harbour and Central Europe largest market. Transport offers of the different competing transport modes (rail, car, ship) were compared and the main barriers to the development of rail freight were identified. In the frame of the study performed in 2010 by the Institute with its Dutch partner NEA, a special attention was paid to possible increase of quality, efficiency and transhipment capacity of intermodal terminals and to measures that could be taken in order to improve cooperation between all the stakeholders of the intermodal transport logistic chain. Based on UIC reference study and in close cooperation with Polish intermodal operators, seven polish intermodal terminals with activities on the Polish - Dutch freight transport were analyzed in order to assess their transhipment capacity. According to the results of performed simulations, it can be stated that relevant increase of transhipment capacity will be required at four terminals by 2030. However rail tracks works and improvement of loading devices require important financial support. In view of this, one of the conclusions drawn by the authors of the study is that increased cooperation between all stakeholders, not only at terminal level (cooperation between all logistic chain actors in order to meet with client’ needs) but also all across the market (by promoting information about transport offers), can be the key. Several potential solutions, that positively influence international intermodal transport in the Netherlands, are displayed in the final part of the article.

Intermodal transport, the use of different means of transport in the supply chain, is becoming increasingly important in the global commercial environment. This article presents an economic analysis of intermodal transport and examines the advantages of using different modes of transport within the supply chain. The focus is on cost savings, flexibility, reliability, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, reduction of transit times and improvement of operational efficiency.

Poniekąd, transport intermodalny pozwala uruchomić, wyzyskać ten potencjał.
National potential of defence consists of many components. One of them is national's economic potential of defence which is created by many units placed within the non-military executive subsystem of the national defence system. The scope of activity of these units also includes intermodal transport, which is particularly worth developing due to the wide range of advantages and benefits for its stakeholders. Ensuring the usability of time and place, intermodal transport creates a kind of foundation for the proper functioning and development of all units, whose main task is to create national's economic potential of defence. In a sense, intermodal transport allows to run, exploit this potential.
