Opis:
Declaratio sententiae is a statement of the court issuing the decision, explaining to the court a quo its doubts related to this decision. In the second half of the fifteenth century, in the practice of The Supreme Court of Magdeburg Law at the castle of Kraków, such instructions were very common. Frequently the lower courts issued questions, but there appeared some cases where a party made an inquiry as well. The questions related both to procedural and material matters. The Supreme Court, while giving instructions, pointed out the errors made by the court a quo, asked for further explanations, and indicated the actions necessary to be performed, determining their consequences.

This paper focuses on second language acquisition in the context of social interactions naturally taking place among learners, especially in immersion/Study Abroad settings. We showcase the methodology of social network analysis, which has recently shed new light on the relationship between the individual position in the social network and language acquisition, helping to determine which contexts, intensity and direction of interactions are most conducive to L2 progress. At the time of the current COVID-19 pandemic, physical interactions can pose an epidemiological risk. Thus, we conclude with a discussion concerning the challenge of maximising students’ exposure to the target language in the context of emergency remote learning.

Opis:
Hieronim Florian Radziwill was the eighteenth-century magnate, who was married three times. In anticipation of the desired heir he wrote the instruction of education called "Education, which, when the God Almighty allow us to have children, I will give". The instruction consisted of 67 points, in which prince described and explained his educational methods. Although, it might seem to be too strict, at each point was stated a rational substantiation, that explains the points of the magnate’sviews to the reader. There is no possibility to deny the rationale of explanations and arguments with which individual points of the instruction were referenced.

What are the implications for the unassailable position of the English language in social, professional and academic contexts in the world today? In this paper we briefly outline some of the watershed changes in the way we have viewed the teaching/learning of English and how we have evolved our notions as to what kind of English needs to be taught/learned. We argue that we are again at a watershed moment and intend to briefly analyse this and ask where we should be heading in the future.

Opis:
Empirical evaluations of practical teaching units integrating content and language in higher education are rare and deserve more attention. The current article aims to narrow this gap by providing an empirical study of an integrating content and language in higher education (ICLHE, Smit & Dafouz, 2012) teaching module. It investigates the effectiveness of a content-based English for specific purposes module in tertiary aeronautical engineering education, which incorporates recruitment advertisements as online resources. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach and surveyed three aeronautical engineering student groups (N = 141) over three consecutive years on their perceptions of the module’s learning outcomes. This longitudinal survey was complemented by a teacher-assessed writing task and a qualitative content analysis of online recruitment advertisements (N = 80) in a self-built corpus. All three year groups rated the 10 questionnaire statements on a 5-point Likert scale rather equally, thus suggesting a similar perception of academic achievement stemming from the module’s completion. This student view was supported by the results of the writing assignment. In short, the module’s effectiveness was corroborated both quantitatively and qualitatively, which identifies this teaching concept as a feasible way forward.

The purpose of this state-of-the-art review is to provide a general overview of recent research on time distribution and second language (L2) learning with special implications for classroom settings. Several studies have been performed to examine how to best distribute the hours of L2 practice to maximize learning by comparing conditions that promote intensive exposure versus others in which L2 input or instruction is more widely spaced. Findings from these studies are relevant not only for practical purposes but also for theory development. This review provides a summary of recent studies as well as suggestions for pedagogical practice. Additionally, it identifies areas for future research concerning the effect of time distribution on L2 learning.

The 2013 Curriculum Reform and its effect on school practices remain a challenge for Indonesia since the roles of school leadership remain unaddressed. This study aimed to examine the effect of school leadership on instructional practices and student learning. This cross-sectional survey collected data from 1,082 students and 180 teachers from randomly selected 40 junior secondary school principals. Employing education production function models, this study found that the quality of school leadership had impacts on teachers’ ability to create student-centered instruction and consequently on student learning. Results suggest that school reforms would be even more successful, among other things, through establishing school principals as professional agents of change that help teachers transform their instructional behavior and improve learning.

In the tradition of teaching English as a second language, there has been an increased interest in how functional language descriptions and understandings of genres may be used as resources for making meaning. The present study investigates what impact writing instruction that draws upon systemic functional linguistics (SFL) applied through a genre-pedagogy approach has on students’ ability to write argumentative essays. This includes explicit grammar instruction inspired by SFL, as well as instruction on text structure. The study uses a mixed-methods approach, with a quasi-experiment followed up by quantitative and qualitative analyses of the collected material. Statistical analyses indicate a significant positive effect on writing performance in the intervention groups, regardless of gender, first language and previous level of writing. As the study lacks control groups, the quantitative analysis was complemented with examples from student texts to illustrate the improvement revealed in the statistical analysis. The findings suggest that SFL applied through a genre-pedagogy approach to teaching writing may help students to improve their writing skills.

As a result, accuracy improved and students were more engaged in redrafting. Amongst improvements noted were all the students started passing their final writing assessments. Screen casts have conventionally only been used for scaffolding instructions or content. As well as allowing greater autonomous learning and increasing peer learning, it is postulated this methodology actually reduces the teacher’s work load and is as efficient as audio or handwritten feedback.

Although recent years have seen a growing interest in positive emotions in second or foreign language learning and teaching, negative emotions are always present in the classroom and they deserve to be investigated in their own right. The article focuses on boredom, a construct that has been explored in educational psychology but has received only scant attention from second language acquisition researchers. It reports a study which examined the changes in the levels of boredom experienced by 13 English majors in four EFL classes and the factors accounting for such changes. Using data obtained from a few different sources (i.e., boredom grids, narratives, interviews, class evaluations and lesson plans), it was found that although boredom can be attributed to different constellations of factors, it was mainly traced to repetitiveness, monotony and predictability of what transpired during a particular class.

Students often struggle throughout the reading process and are not aware of how they are reading. While reading instruction dialogue has been around for many years, it has mostly focused on traditional face-to-face methods of modeling and feedback. Technology can play a role in reading instruction by offering teachers and students the option of using video to help motivate students to read, to showcase student readings, as well as to show students what they are doing as they read. This study will present and review strategies using readingcasts, dramatic read-alongs, digital booktalks, recorded video of students reading for feedback, and video feedforwarding.

This is a continuation of Nowacka’s (2016) study on the importance of local and global errors and spelling in pronunciation instruction. Unlike in the previous research that focused on the performance of Polish learners only, respondents of six different nationalities are included, in search of some cross-national universals or absence of them. This study seeks to answer the following questions: whether there is a need to focus on spelling in a pronunciation course with learners representing six different L1s and if this is the case which graphophonemic / phonotactic rules of English should be explicitly taught to all of these learners and which ones might be L1 specific only. The intention is also to empirically confirm the existence of local errors in the performance of around 240 speakers and 50 more listeners, constituting 291 listeners of six nationalities (Kazakh, Malaysian, Polish, Turkish, Tajik and Ukrainian) and to confirm the usefulness of memorizing Sobkowiak’s (1996) ‘Words Commonly Mispronounced’ even for learners of different L1s.
