We will examine the largely ethical vocation of Romain Gary's memorial writing project, which leads it to metamorphose itself into a literary tomb of the forgotten dead. We will then discuss, from a more narratological point of view, how this memory emerges untimely in the narrative and sometimes frees itself from it to signify the transcendent character of the name and the face. Finally, we will show that Gary goes beyond the somewhat naive vision of the memory as a mere recorder of events or images by associating it with the imagination to give it a poetic and counter-historical use.

As a substitute father figure, a mentor, a tutor and a writer to be admired and imitated, Barbey d’Aurevilly acted as a master for Bloy from the moment they first met. Indeed, among all the other self-proclaimed heirs of Barbey’s legacy, Bloy seems to be the most ardent disciple of the Connétable des Lettres. As we concentrate on the way Bloy constructs multiple authority figures who all somehow relate to Barbey, we propose to study the way these two writers, who both lean exclusively towards the figurative, give a particular depth to their relationship by elaborating their imagery, which plays an essential role in the way they construct the bond between master and disciple. This investigation will, in addition, lead us to consider how such a relationship cannot come about without any occasional differences of opinion or mutual irritation. Far from shying away from the master, Bloy clearly constructs his own authorial persona in the light of the brilliant master, rather than in his shadow.
Père de substitution, mentor, tuteur, objet d’admiration et d’imitation, Barbey d’Aurevilly remplit pour Bloy, depuis leur rencontre, les fonctions d’un maître. Parmi tous ceux qui se revendiqueront d’un héritage de Barbey, Bloy semble en effet avoir été le disciple le plus fervent du Connétable des Lettres. Tout en nous concentrant en particulier sur la manière dont les figures d’autorité qui renvoient à Barbey se construisent chez Bloy, nous nous proposons de voir comment ces deux écrivains, qui sont entièrement du côté du figuratif, donnent une densité particulière à leur rapport à travers le travail de l’image qui prend une place centrale et essentielle dans la construction du lien entre un maître et un disciple. Cette enquête nous amènera en outre à considérer qu’une telle relation de va ni sans prise de distance ponctuelle ni sans agacement réciproque. Loin de s’effacer devant le maître, Bloy se construit clairement moins dans l’ombre que dans la lumière d’un maître qui l’éclaire.

If the most minimalist definition one can give to the words « art work » is « the way an imagination expresses itself », this definition was, in the second half of the 19th century, the reason why art. critics and theorists argued about the status of photography : purely objective document or potential art work. But writers and literary theorists also took part in this debate, since photography was used to illustrate novels. This article confronts the « literary imagination » and the « photographic imagination », and tries to understand the points of convergence and the points of divergence between these two kinds of imagination, through the contradictory points of view of historians, philosophers and theorists of visual arts and literature.
Si l’on peut définir, de la manière la plus générale, une oeuvre d’art comme ‘expression d’un imaginaire, cette définition posa le problème du statut de la photographie lors de son apparition : document purement objectif ou potentielle forme artistique. Écrivains et critiques littéraires prirent part à ce débat, d’autant plus que des photos furent utilisées pour illustrer des livres, notamment des romans, à partir des années 1880. Cet article tente de confronter « l’imaginaire littéraire » à « l’imaginaire photographique » à travers des points de vues d’écrivains, critiques, philosophes et médiologues, afin de tenter de mieux comprendre leurs points de convergence et de divergence.

This review article discusses two newly-released publications on communist women activists: Kristen Ghodsee’s Red Valkyries: Feminist Lessons from Five Revolutionary Women and The Palgrave Handbook of Communist Women Activists around the World, edited by Francisca de Haan. It focuses on questions of narrative and the persuasive function of the reviewed works, asking how and for whom one should write about communist women today. It brings to light methodological challenges, as well as those related to access to sources on communist women. It also reflects on the place that publications which tell stories of communist women who challenged gender, class, and racial inequalities in the past occupy in the perception of contemporary readers, so often confronted in these times with experiences of inequality and violence.

The issues indicated in the title concern the objectives and tasks of Polish language education related to the training of reading and text-forming skills. An important role in this process is played by the imagination described in the literature as “exceptionally human”, combined with subjectivity, creative thinking, empathy, transgression, autonomy, memory and many other dispositions that influence the personality of the student, including his or her cognitive, emotional, social, etc. Can “the action of imagination”, “the movement of thoughts, emotions and experiences” be found in the works of students inspired by school reading? What can and how can it be conducive to, and what hinders, these processes? What educational conclusions can be drawn from the analysis of tasks requiring the “work of imagination”? Why is it important for the development and education of students? The article attempts to answer such questions.

In the present article I discuss the remarkable fact that many of the motifs to be found in Seneca’s tragedies – such as a horrible death, a madman, an obsession or some supernatural agent – are also to be found in abundance in the work of “Gothic” authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Edgar Allan Poe. Indeed, these motifs are now commonly considered to be the hallmark of the Gothic genre. I also analyse some of the techniques which Seneca uses in order to arouse fear and stimulate the reader’s imagination, comparing them with those used by Poe and other Gothic writers.

The subject of reflections in this article is the phenomenon of topographic imagination of Sławomir Mrożek. Tracking traces of autobiographical places in the writer’s works, the author attempts to explain the reasons for his little interest in the geographic concrete as a literary material as well as to answer the question what functions these places fulfill in "Dziennik powrotu" [A Journal of Return] and "Baltazar. Autobiografia" [Balthasar. Autobiography]. In her opinion, both the scarce presence of autobiographic places in the earlier works of Mrożek, as well as their appearance in the works referred to, remains in connection with the problem of the identity of the writer, who throughout most of his life struggled with the sense of non-existence, and after the stroke he had to redefine himself and his place in the world.

Polityka, jako działalność społeczna człowieka, jest silnie osadzona w przestrzeni. Współcześni badacze bardzo często podejmują w swoich analizach zagadnienie rywalizacji o przestrzeń i roli jaką pełni „wiedza geograficzna” w procesach „produkowania” i zawłaszczania przestrzeni w imię partykularnych interesów danej zbiorowości. Jest to jeden z kluczowych problemów badawczych, który przyczynił się do odrodzenia zainteresowania zagadnieniami politycznej rywalizacji o przestrzeń, o zawłaszczanie miejsc i kształtowanie ich krajobrazu oraz ich symbolicznej reprezentacji. Kategorie takie jak Mitteleuropa, czy też Międzymorze są konstruktami społeczno-politycznymi, które były wykorzystywane w budowaniu partykularnej wizji świata oraz w procesach politycznej rywalizacji o dominację.
Politics, as a human social activity, is strongly embedded in space. Contemporary researchers very often take up in their analyses the issue of competition for space and the role played by "geographical knowledge" in the processes of "production" and appropriation of space in the name of particular interests of a given community or state. It is one of the key research problems that have contributed to the revival of interest in the issues of political competition for space, the appropriation of places and the shaping of their landscape and symbolic representation. Categories such as Mitteleuropa, or the Intermarium, are socio-political (metageographical) constructs that have been used in the construction of a particular vision of the world and in processes of political competition for dominance.

The paper is an attempt to outline a few problems connected with economic modes of reading the historic avant-garde, mainly its poetry. The author recapitulates a short history of its studies based on symbolic economies in order to consider possible semantic differences, resulting in the various uses of economic analogy in the discourse of the first avant-garde. The article focuses on Futurist and Constructivists movements, trying to sketch conflicts between political commitment and artistic autonomy, possible economies of sign and some sources of the “economic imagination”.

Although Frank Ormsby’s poetry is associated with what Terry Eagleton has called tropes of irony and commitment, his 2009 collection Fireflies inclines, rather surprisingly, towards Wallace Stevens’s idea of imagination as a force impacting reality. Reading Ormsby’s volume against a selection of poems by Stevens unravels what appears to be a consistent affinity between the author of Harmonium and the Ulster-born poet. This affinity manifests itself, as the present paper aims to show, in the fact that in Fireflies, much like in Stevens, a form of perception of reality is delineated that is never to stagnate into an achieved balance.

Postapocalyptic narratives proliferate in contemporary fiction and cinema. A convincing and successful representative of the genre, Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven (2014) can nevertheless be distinguished from other postapocalyptic texts, such as Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (2006), Margaret Atwood’s Maddaddam trilogy, and the television series The Walking Dead (2010–). The novel does not focus on survival, struggle, and conflict but rather examines the possibility and necessity of cultural expression in a postapocalyptic setting, demonstrating the importance and value of art and memory even in strained circumstances. As a result, it presents an unusually optimistic and hopeful vision of an otherwise bleak future.

Describing the poetry of Venclova, Brodsky states that „every major poet has an idiosyncratic inner landscape against which his voice sounds in his mind or, if you prefer, subconsciously”[1]. We cannot but look at it as a potentially auto-referential remark. For Brodsky, definitely a major poet, such a place is Venice, yet it is surprising that his chief essay on that place does not capture many scholars’ attention. At the same time, there are relatively few studies that focus exclusively on the poetic images in Brodsky’s works as the material realization the poet’s reverie. That seems to be a huge negligence given that the metaphysical concern so characteristic of the poet is at its peak in this literary piece. The present study focuses on the images of water in Brodsky’s essay as being the chief substance of his cosmic reverie. The methodology derives from Bachelard’s phenomenological method, the aim of which is to communicate with the imagining consciousness of the poet who creates original images specific to him- or herself. While the poet’s experiences are not taken into account in uch an approach, the cosmology they recreate in poetry is and should be. The main aspects of Brodsky’s cosmic reverie communicated through water are that of the inherent connection between the poet and the universe he creates (а „diffuse ontology”), the existential conflict between human life and absolute Time that is a typical motif in Brodsky’s literary work, as well as the transcendental quality of poetry. All the abovementioned supports Bachelard’s intuition and encourages further study of the poet’s work in this context.

Artykuł wyrasta z przekonania o analogii zachodzącej pomiędzy symptomatycznym dla tzw. posthumanistyki odchodzeniem od antropocentrycznego modelu refleksji a wypracowywanymi przez różne szkoły duchowości ćwiczeniami mającymi na celu przezwyciężanie egocentrycznej postawy i związanej z nią narcystycznej optyki. Autorka zwraca uwagę na przypadki, w których współcześni humaniści angażują się w artystyczne projekty wykorzystujące metody świadomego oddychania, czy medytacji i analizuje je w świetle wyników badań pokazujących, jak te religijne w swej proweniencji praktyki stymulują doświadczenia auto-transcendencji.
The article stems from the conviction that there is an analogy between departing from the anthropocentric model of reflection (symptomatic for the so-called posthumanities) and certain practices developed by various schools of spirituality in order to overcome the egocentric viewpoint. The author provides a theoretical framework, which attempts at redefining the notion of imagination in the context of ecocriticism and Malabou’s plasticity. Then she draws attention to cases in which contemporary humanists engage in artistic projects using methods of conscious breathing and meditation. She analyzes those installations in the light of contemporary research on meditation and shows how these postsecular practices stimulate self-transcendent experiences.

W listopadzie 2015 roku Zygmunt Bauman obchodził 90. urodziny, będąc przy tym jak zwykle żywotnym, produktywnym i inteligentnym. Po ponad 70 opublikowanych książkach, z których każda analizuje jeden temat i otwiera drzwi na wszystkie strony, jego praca pozostaje istotnym punktem odniesienia w socjologii. Bauman nadal jest jednym z najbardziej elektryzujących socjologów, jednym z najbłyskotliwszych i najbardziej elastycznych myślicieli w swym pokoleniu. Wyjaśnia to, dlaczego niektórzy komentatorzy uznali go za jednego z najważniejszych żyjących socjologów. Gwoli ścisłości, jego prace poddane zostały również zdecydowanej krytyce. Po zarysowaniu rozumowania umniejszających jego dokonania w niniejszym artykule rozwija się myśl, że więcej ona mówi o stanie obecnej kultury w socjologii niż jakości pracy Baumana. Sposób praktykowania swego rzemiosła przez Baumana można uznać za osobliwy, nie jest on jednak w socjologii niczym nowym. Inni ważni socjologowie – Marks, Simmel, Weber – byli również nonkonformistami, lecz we współczesnym świecie Bauman jest wyjątkiem. Bauman, jak i inni ważni nonkonformiści, jest wytworem własnej niezwykłej biografii. Podobnie jak niektórzy z nich potrafił on wykorzystać podwójną wizję emigranta, która wyostrzyła jego osobistąświadomość wieloznaczności nowoczesności. W tekście ukazuje się, że socjologia w rękach Baumana tworzy odmienną mapę kognitywną tego, co zwykli ludzi uznają za rzeczywistość, zaś my wszyscy bierzemy za oczywistość. Baumanowskie metafory opisujące tę nowoczesność są mesjanistyczne i ekologiczne: ratują pewną odmianę socjologii, która jest zagrożonym gatunkiem. Ostatnia część artykułu rzuca wyzwanie tendencji krytyków Baumana, wedle których ostateczną ochroną socjologii jako dyscypliny akademickiej leży poza władzą społeczną, znajdując się we władzy tego, co obiektywne. Bauman zajmuje odmienne stanowisko, jego socjologia bowiem rozpościera się między dwiema „rzeczywistościami” – hermeneutyczną socjologią i socjologiczną hermeneutyką. Wskutek nieustannego procesu wymiany między nimi, potrafi on „odkryć to, co istnieje”. Oto poczucie wolności, które promieniuje z dialektyki, która cechuje jego dzieło.
Zygmunt Bauman turned 90 years of age in November 2015, as vital, productive, and intelligently alive as ever. After more than seventy books written over five decades, each one taking a single subject and finding doors to open in all directions, his work remains an essential reference point in sociology. Bauman continues to be one of most electrifying writers in sociology, among the sharpest and most supple thinkers of his generation. This explains why some commentators have described him as the most important living sociologist. Yet his work has also come in for some severe critique. After outlining what his detractors have had to say, the view developed in this article is that generally speaking this criticism says more about present culture in sociology than it does about the quality of the work as such. The way in which Bauman practices his craft may have the appearance of idiosyncrasy, yet nothing about it is unusual; it has had a previous life in sociology. Other important sociologists have played the same nonconformist game that Bauman plays – Marx, Simmel, Weber – but none in the contemporary period. It is explained that in common with other important nonconformists Bauman is a product of his own unusual biography. And like some of them he has also been able to take the advantage of an émigré’s double vision which has sharpened his personal awareness of the ambivalence of modernity. It is subsequently demonstrated that in Bauman’s hands sociology is compelled into a different cognitive mapping of what we ordinarily understand as reality, the one we all experience and take for granted. What we find in his work is the demand that sociology begin with a hermeneutic understanding of the contingency and ambivalence of life’s flux. It is argued thereafter that the metaphors Bauman uses to describe this modernity are messianic and ecological: they are saving a certain kind of sociology, an endangered species. The final part of the article challenges the tendency of Bauman’s critics to assume that the ultimate defence of sociology as an academic discipline lies in an authority beyond that of society – the authority of the objective is. It is argued that Bauman leaves no room for such an authority since his sociology is established between two ‘realities’ – hermeneutic sociology and sociological hermeneutics. As a result of a continuous reciprocal process between the two, he is able to ‘disclose that which exists’. And it is the sense of freedom emanating from this dialectic that he communicates in his work.

This paper engages with the question of the ethical implications of, and artistic imagination in picturebooks. The analysis relies on two visual narratives confronting the theme of cultural difference. The juxtaposition of the two books that share the themes of visiting and hosting, of confronting otherness, and of cultural prejudice indicates differences in their narrative and artistic potential. The analysis of formal strategies in Jemmy Button by Jennifer Uman and Valerio Vidali and in Eric by Shaun Tan serves to point out the role of artistic imagination and narrative wisdom in creating visual literature.
