Opis:
Aim The aim of this paper is the assessment of eating habits of high school students from grades 2 and 3, including eating habits, self-evaluation of diet and the most common nutrition mistakes committed by the members of the studied group. Materials and methodology The study involved 333 high school students between the age of 17 and 19. The group consisted of 150 girls and 183 boys. Data was collected using an original survey which consisted of questions dealing with diet and respondent’s particulars. The study was anonymous. The results have been subjected to statistical analysis using Pearson’s chi-squared test. The statistical differences recognized as significant were those with probability of p<0.05 Results The majority reaching nearly 40% of respondents declared that they eat 4 meals a day. Over 60% eat breakfast every day. The number of students who declared that they do not eat breakfast at all amounted to 48. Over 55% do not pay attention to their eating habits, whereas 45 students consider them unhealthy. About 60% of respondents declare that they do not drink energy drinks. Within the group of students who consume such drinks the most often declared frequency was 1-2 times a week. The answers, however, vary between the female and the male group (chi-square=82.72121, p≤0,05); 75% of males do not consume energy drinks, among females the percentage amounts to mere 43%. Conclusions The students taking part in the study commit nutrition mistakes which might be a sign of unsufficient level of health education within that field. The nutritional education of the youth should start in primary school and be adapted to the needs and possibilities of the target group. In the face of poor diet, it seems justified to analyze the sources of information on nutrition used by the youth in terms of their credibility.

Introduction. Physical activity is one of the basic needs of people throughout their lives. Physical activity prevents many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, which have the highest mortality rate, both among urban and rural populations in Poland. The average life expectancy in Poland and the European Union is increasing. The proportion of children and adolescents under the age of 20 is decreasing slowly but steadily, while the proportion of older people (aged 65+) in the total population is gradually increasing. According to the forecast of the Central Statistical Office, the percentage of older people increased rapidly after 2010, and will reach 22.3% in 2030. The number of the elderly will increase from 5,134,000 in 2007 to 8,195,000 in 2030. The health situation of Poles is less favourable compared to other European Union states. The most common health risks are: nicotine, drug addiction, alcoholism and obesity. One of the causes of obesity is an unhealthy lifestyle. Lifestyle is a basic determinant of human health. Objective. The aim of this study is to present research results based on a literature review on the importance of physical activity for human health as an element of organizing and managing the lifestyle of urban and rural populations. Conclusions. Comprehensive measures should be taken to increase public health awareness and promote health education, especially among school-age children and youths, and to provide appropriate sports infrastructure in particularly neglected rural areas.

The aim of this study was to analyse health behavior, taking into account the following aspects: proper nutritional habits (PNH), preventive behaviors (PB), positive thinking (PT) and health practices (HP) in the light of general index of intensity of health behaviors (GIIHB) of pregnant women participating in antenatal classes in Szczecin. Juczyński’s (2001) Health Behavior (HBI) Inventory constitutes the methodological basis for this investigation. Among examined respondents participating in prenatal school activities a high health behaviors indicator was stated in nearly half of them (49.0%). Unfortunately, among the rest of examined pregnant women health behaviors were on the average (37.4%) or low level (13.6%). None of the above categories of health behaviours obtained remarkably higher point values. Therefore, it can be stated that there is a necessity to promote preventive activities to spread information concerning healthy eating habits and to recommend advantages resulting from health behaviors.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the paper is to analyse the impact ageism may have on providing healthcare to elderly people. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The article investigates the consequences of ageism in medical settings, where the elderly are particularly vulnerable to discrimination, distinguishing ageism from appropriate practice variation as well as giving suggestions to improve the situation. The paper analyses research published worldwide on selected issues connected with ageism with special attention to medical professionals’ attitudes and ageist behaviours of the elderly’s environment in a situation of their disability or illness. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Firstly, the relation of ageism to other forms of stereotyping is outlined. Then, the threats of positive ageism are elaborated. The next section is devoted to self-stereotyping of the elderly and its impact on their functioning. Then, the paper discusses medical professionals’ attitudes and ways to measure them, as well as educational interventions that may alter them. Finally, the article refers effective ways of adjusting health promotion messages to the needs of older adults. RESEARCH RESULTS: Ageism bases on mechanisms similar to sexism and racism, but there are some remarkable differences. Positive ageism may be compassionate, however, might be harmful when intruding into an elderly person’s decisions. Self-stereotyping may be described with a model of a vicious cycle. Contact with the elderly is found to be useful in changing medical staff’s attitudes. Family-centred messages are most effective when it comes to health promotion among older adults. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Studies on ageism prove that negative convictions about the elderly are harmful and affect their functioning. Inclusion of the elderly should be applied in social contexts as well as in science, as the elderly are often missed out in research samples.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to explore and analyze three aspects of the relationship between general pedagogy and Health education. Two different doctoral dissertations on Health education, claimed to be written from different scientific positions (hermeneutic and positivistic), were analyzed from science--philosophical, knowledge-theoretical and methodological points of view. The analysis showed that none of the dissertations contained any deeper discussion on science-philosophical or knowledge-theoretical issues and that both of the dissertations were written mainly in the hermeneutic tradition. The reason for this is probably that Health education, especially promotive Health education, handles divergent questions that seldom, or never, can be handled with positivistic methods. One consequence of this is that the results of research on promotive Health education rarely, or never, are normative and can tell how to teach about health in a specific educational situation. Instead the results can be used as a background for didactic reflection whey planning and realizing Health education initiatives. Another consequence is that the present trend with demand for evidence based Health education, can be questioned! Because promotive Health education is so heavily loaded with divergent questions, and because pedagogical research, according to Habermas, has an emancipatory or critical “knowledge interest”. Research can explain what is going on in one situation but not predict what will happen in a similar, but other situation! Therefore this paper argues that the idea of evidence based, promotive health education is hard, or impossible, to realize.

Effective health-oriented education in the area of sports and recreation events organization - is not a goal which is easy to achieve. The idea is certainly worthy of attention, since the benefits can be passed on to the organizer, sponsor and the entire society. The purpose of this paper is to present sports and recreation events as a means of promoting physical culture and health-oriented education. Motions, proposals, and preconditions (as described here) of effective educational intervention in the organization of events are based on 15-years-long secret (hidden) participatory observation of 141 different (in terms of their organizational specifics) street runs - both in Poland and in the neighbouring countries - Germany, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Sports and recreation events can become an effective instrument of education for a healthy lifestyle only if they are widely available (easily accessible), if they draw media attention, are popular, cyclical (recurring), have a specific program and atmosphere. The organizers of events in the area of physical recreation should not encourage competition but rather educate for regular participation in health-oriented training, while active participation in sports and recreation event might fit in the pre-planned health capacity control. For sports and recreation events to become a carrier of socially desirable values such as health or healthy lifestyle, promoters should intentionally put emphasis on these values and place them above commercial or marketing strategies of sponsors.

Objectives: This paper is a report on the relationship between a sense of coherence (and its components) and work related patterns of behaviour in the group of nurses. Materials and Method: Data were collected by two questionnaires (Antonovsky’s Orientation Questionnaire and Work Related Patterns of Behaviour and Experience Questionnaire) in the sample of 331 volunteer nurses employed in three Polish general care hospitals. Results: The analysis of r-Pearson’s correlation and the linear multiple regression analysis revealed a strong relationship between the sense of coherence and healthy type of behaviour, and a strong negative relationship with a burnout type of behaviour. Conclusion: The results obtained in this study provide grounds for the conclusion that the sense of coherence correlates with healthy functioning at work in the group of nurses.

The quality of life is a multidimensional notion. When studying it, one should take the physical, the psychological, the social, and the professional aspects into consid eration. Among them, the notion of the influence of obesity, understood as a modern -age disease, relates the quality of life to the notion of health, in the aspect of physical activity. The aim of the study carried out, was to determine the relationship be tween obesity in 18 -25 year - olds, and their physical activity, as well as the quality of their lives. The study was carried out by means a WHOQOL - BREF, and IPAQ survey questionnaires carried out on a group of 100 participants. The control group included pe ople whose BMI was within the norm, whereas the study group comprised people whose BMI was over 25. The results of the study have shown obesity to have a statistically significant negative impact on the quality of life in the physical, and mental domains, and as far as the general perception of health was concerned. In the study group, the mean weekly energy expenditure, was lower than in the control group. The physical activity of the obese, includes, mainly, activities based on light effort, and to a less er extent, those based on moderate effort. A comparative analysis has shown the level of physical activity to be significantly lower in obese women, in each type of physical effort, except light effort. This difference does not exist between the study, and control groups of men.

The aim of this article is to present the phenomenon of the increase in the consumption of energy drinks particularly among children and adolescents and to show their negative health effects. In the education process, the young generation is to acquire the necessary knowledge about health, its conditions and threats, as well as develop the ability to use this knowledge in everyday life to know, want and be able to enhance their own health and that of other persons and to improve the quality of life. Therefore, in education, physical education teachers who are prepared for this function play a special role in the health education of students. Their task is education in the field of healthy lifestyle, transferring knowledge about the adverse consequences of one’s behaviour and related health threats, including sensitizing children and adolescents to the negative effects of drinking energy drinks, as well as building health awareness of students and shaping a sense of responsibility for one’s own health.

The development of health education, education in the scope of healthy lifestyles is significantly affected by the mass media, and primarily the Internet, which is an interactive source of information and the space to acquire competencies supporting health. Access to the Internet is getting more and more widespread; also the range of easily accessible content, related to the lifestyle has expanded. Migrations of populations tend to impair the traditionally understood image of the urban and rural environments. Technological advances in the field of transport communications and IT have also reduced the distance between the two discussed environments. The aim of this study was to assess the level of pro-health behaviors of women who are interested in a healthy lifestyle, and who live both in the countryside and in large cities. The study involved 78 women from the towns with up to 3 thousand inhabitants and 130 from the cities with a population over 100 thousand inhabitants. All research participants were active participants in one of the largest health services for mature women in Poland. The research was part of the PARP project -Global health problems, implemented by the Foundation ‘Smak Żcia’. Standardized research tools Health Behavior Inventory were applied according to the adaptation of Z. Juczyńki. As many as 30% of patients achieved a low level of pro-health behaviors, 45% obtained an average score, and only 25%-a high one, which due to an interest in the subject of a healthy lifestyle, occurring as a constant activity on the online health portal, can be regarded as an unsatisfactory result. The research participants (female subscribers of advice from pro-health service) willing to share their experience, commented on a variety of content related to health issues, however, the level of their health behaviors did not differ significantly from the average values for the Polish population. There was no statistically significant difference in the level of realized health behaviors between women living in rural and metropolitan environments. Research confirmed that Internet theme services concerning issues of a healthy lifestyle, are a chance to equalize disparities in pro-health behaviors, and consequently - in health itself, thus initiatives of raising interest in health education through the mass media ought to be supported.

The ‘Health Promoting School’ model provides a framework for school-based health promotion (HP) activities, which have become a major theme in the health and educational strategy in Europe. However, the issue of HP implementation is complex. The general purpose of this article is to report on the findings of a nationwide survey that examined the extent of HP implementation at schools in Poland. The research results presented in this paper are part of a broader research project which was conducted at the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland) in cooperation with the University of Limerick (Ireland). The research was conducted by means of the questionnaire: “National Questionnaire on SPHE and Health Promoting Schools”, developed by the staff of the University of Limerick and adapted to Polish conditions. The questionnaires were sent to schools in Poland holding the National Health Promoting School (HPS) Certificate, one hundred and three of which were completed and returned and then analysed with respect to quantity and quality. Considering the theoretical assumptions of the idea analysed, the information obtained from the respondents describing health promotion at their schools was grouped into four categories: school environment; core curriculum and learning; partnership; policy and planning. It was determined that the work of these schools emphasises mostly two elements in building a health promoting school: the school environment along with core curriculum and learning, while the two other elements (partnership; policy and planning) are more poorly implemented.

Hungarian Americans share a unique culture of food traditions associated with their value system and way of life. Researchers, health care providers, and nutrition professionals counseling and treating a Hungarian-American population should develop a baseline of cultural understanding to achieve successful and long-lasting behavior change outcomes. The leading causes of death among Hungarians include ischemic heart disease (21.3%), stroke (13.4%), and cirrhosis (5.8%); all are directly or indirectly attributed to a traditional Hungarian diet coupled with a sedentary lifestyle. Health behaviors among Hungarian Americans can be partially explained by the Health Belief Model’s value-expectancy construct. Understanding cultural expectations and their associated values serve as a foundation for health promotion programming to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and comorbidities. This review explored numerous facets of Hungarian-American dietary habits in psychosocial, economic, historical, and cultural contexts. Health education and health promotion considerations were also examined.

The global spread of cancer makes every preventive action aiming at stopping the increase in number of cases and deaths related to cancer extremely important. Preventive actions may be especially effective in diseases etiologically related to lifestyles, including above all eating habits and level of physical activity. It is worth implementing them in compliance with the participatory approach, which constitutes a key component of health promotion and health education. The aim of this article is to present the reasons for and the need to implement prevention based on the idea of participation. This is justified by the results of the research conducted as part of a grant sponsored by Polska Liga Walki z Rakiem [Polish Cancer League] (“Onkogranty II” contest), entitled Promotion of healthy eating habits and physical activity in primary schools throughout the city of Bytom – a diagnosis of educational needs in the context of planning effective actions in primary cancer prevention. It seems that involving students in the process of identifying needs, determining priorities, planning and evaluating these actions is currently one of the most effective ways of developing awareness of cancer prevention.

Opis:
Purpose: To assess the opinions of people, using, or familiar with Chodakowska’s method, on her marketing strategy and public relations. Materials and methods: The research was conducted between the 31st of March and the 4th of April 2014. A questionnaire, consisting of 31 questions was created and uploaded at website. All internet users, interested in Chodakowska’s method, were able to take part in the research. The study group consisted of 1005 respondents. Results; The vast majority of respondents familiar in any way with Chodakowska used her workout programs. The Chi-squared test indicated statistically significant dependency between the place of residence and using Chodakowska’s workout programs. Among the ways of getting to know Chodakowska’s workout programs, friends proved to be the most common and the official Facebook fan page took second place. Among all respondents, who use the workout programs have never used any program, before they learned about Chodakowska and her method. The majority of respondents declare that the popularity of Chodakowska is due to the free of charge YouTube movies, then the regularly updated Facebook fan page, building a community of physically active people. Conclusions: The results of the study it is possible to state that using a customized approach and creating a positive image in relations with society can be adopted in promoting physical activity and a healthy diet. In addition, one can state that when developing future obesity prevention campaigns, the achievements and experience of Chodakowska should be taken into account.

Health promotion requires intervention in social systems and encouraging them to develop a healthy environment. School is one of the important social systems contributing to health promotion. “The health promoting school” (HPS) programme was established in the 1980s while looking for ways of putting the health promotion concept into practice. The milestones in developing this programme were: the pilot project “The Health Promoting School” (1992–1995), establishing the European Network of Health Promoting Schools (1992) (transformed into Schools for Health in Europe in 2008) and four European conferences organized within the framework of these networks (1997, 2002, 2009, 2013). This article presents a discussion of the four resolutions which were the final documents of these conferences. They described the basic principles of HPS and the aims and directions of activities for further programme development. The documents are addressed to the people who create the educational and health policy, teachers and researchers in European countries who should support the development of HPSs – recognized as an investment in health, education and democracy.

Introduction and aim. The purpose of this study was to describe the profile of physical activity (PA) of Brazilian adults living with diabetes mellitus living in large Brazilian urban centers, as well as to determine whether the practice aligns with the physical activity guidelines recommended for people with diabetes. Material and methods. Cross-sectional data were acquired from the 2020 Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Non-communicable Diseases, in which about 54,000 persons aged 18 and older in all Brazilian state capitals were contacted in a telephone survey. Participants reported on their engagement in recreational physical activity and active commuting to school and/or work in the three months preceding the interview, as well as the weekly frequency and duration of these activities. They also stated whether they were living with diabetes. A descriptive analysis was performed, and statistical significance was determined using Pearson’s chi-squared test. Results. In 2020, 7.9% of the population identified themselves living with diabetes. There was a greater frequency among older women and those with less education. Walking, water aerobics, and general gymnastics were the most common kinds of physical activity reported by people with diabetes. Moreover, over half of them (54.5%) were inactive, and 15% matched the physical activity criteria. The majority (90%) practiced PA for 30 minutes or more per day, while 87% of those who were active and exercised 1 to 2 times per week did not meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health. Conclusion. In 2020, 7.9% of the population identified themselves as having diabetes. There was a higher frequency among older women and those with less schooling. In the sample as a whole, approximately 70% of people living with diabetes were inactive (54.5%) or did not meet the minimum BP recommendations for people with diabetes. The duration of each session seemed to be in line with the recommendations, however, the lack of regularity caused by the low weekly frequency meant that the minimum recommended target could not be achieved. Efforts involving the continued monitoring of people living with diabetes and counseling in Primary Health Care to opt for a more physically active life, seem to be promising acts for a healthier life, pending a definitive resolution to the disease.

Opis:
On the one hand the achievements of modern civilisation make life easier in almost every area of human functioning, on the other hand they can cause various difficulties – both in the physical health of the individual and their psychosocial functioning. This is reflected in contemporary literature on the subject and statistical data indicating an increase in the prevalence of health problems in the group of children and adolescents. Over the last hundred years, health ceased to be a negative category meaning only the state of absence of physical illness, and began to be treated in a processual and holistic way. Therefore, the emphasis has been shifted from medical interventions focused on the treatment of the already existing disease to activities focused on developing and strengthening health in the biopsychosocial dimension. The article addresses the issue of children's and adolescent's health in the context of changes that have occurred in understanding it, and consequently also in the area of activities undertaken for its benefit. The article points out the need for actions in the area of health promotion (including health education) which, having a long-term and systemic nature, should be an integral element of the education process. Thus, attention was drawn to the role of parents and teachers as persons responsible for shaping the health of the future generation.

The purpose of the article. The presented research aims to analyze the impact of health education on students' attitudes towards taking care of their health, the health of other people and the ability to create a healthy environment. The paper assumes that health education is provided in schools by the applicable law. The work presents an up-to-date perspective on the complex problem of how young people perceive health. Methodology. To verify the significance of the differences in the respondents' assessments, statistical methods (non-parametric tests) were used: the U-Mann-Whitney test and the Spearman rank correlation coefficient. The calculations were made using Statistica. The research sample included young people from upper secondary and general education schools. The author's questionnaire was used. The study was anonymous. Respondents completed the questionnaire voluntarily. The research was conducted between March and September 2023. Results of the research. The conducted empirical analyses and the results of the surveys allowed us to achieve the goal assumed in the introduction and confirmed that health education in secondary schools influences the shaping of students' attitudes towards taking care of their health and the health of the community in which they live. By implementing health education at school – according to the core curriculum – students' awareness and motivation to undertake activities to improve and maintain good health is increased. Additionally, practical skills are developed to help them use the acquired knowledge in everyday life, and pro-health attitudes are formed. Health promotion is, therefore, the key to improving the health of school children, preparing them for a healthy lifestyle and making informed choices about their health and the community in which they live.

Introduction and objective. The aim of the study was investigation of the effect of simple prophylactic methods on the motivation for concern about oral hygiene among 13–15-year-olds. Materials and method. The study covered 98 children from 4 groups attending junior high school. Adolescents from 3 groups were randomly qualified for conducting prophylactic procedures, while the fourth group constituted the control group. Three examinations were performed: preliminary and check-up examinations after 4 and 12 months. The state of the teeth and periodontium and the frequency of brushing of teeth were evaluated. Results. After 4 months, an increase in the number of decayed teeth was observed in all groups; in the control group it was significantly higher compared to the groups subjected to prophylactic actions. After 4 months in the groups covered by prophylactic actions, a significant decrease was obtained in the number of adolescents with CPITN > 0. In the examinations performed after 12 months, no significant differences were found in the value of the DMF and the CPITN index in the examined groups. In both examinations, after 4 and 12 months, the declared frequency of brushing teeth increased, especially in the group which had been provided individual instructions concerning oral hygiene. Conclusions. 1) Implementation of prophylactic methods resulted in an improvement in the state of oral health among junior high school adolescents. 2) Prophylactic actions should be regularly repeated. 3) The provision of individual instruction with supervised individual teaching of brushing teeth resulted in an improvement in the motivation for concern about oral hygiene.

Opis:
According to the authors, physioprophylaxis is a preventive measure against developmental and lifestyle diseases, the aging process and disabilities through: ergonomic performance of daily and professional activities; systematic physical exercise; behaviors that strengthen pro-health factors; and which is oriented towards risk prevention. In the health care system, it is a new and effective prophylactic alternative for the prevention of ever-increasing health risks. As a health need and medical service, physioprophylaxis has officially become present in the law, standards of education and in the professional practice of most physiotherapists. On the other hand, the promotion of the health and well-being of people and the general public that emphasizes the importance of physical activity and exercise is one of a physiotherapist’s professional objectives. The aim of this work is to present an exemplary description of physioprophylaxis integrated with health promotion. The authors resolved to show the types, means and methods of its impact on health education, risk prevention and health policy.
Fizjoprofilaktyka według autorów jest to działanie zapobiegające chorobom rozwojowym i cywilizacyjnym, procesowi starzenia się i niepełnosprawności przez: ergonomiczne wykonywanie czynności życiowych i zawodowych, systematyczną aktywność fizyczną i zachowania wzmacniające czynniki prozdrowotne, ukierunkowane na zapobieganie zagrożeniom. W systemie ochrony zdrowia jest ona nową, skuteczną alternatywą profilaktyczną służącą zapobieganiu nieustannie narastającym zagrożeniom. Jako potrzeba zdrowotna i świadczenie medyczne, fizjoprofilaktyka oficjalnie stała się obecna w aktach prawa, standardach edukacji i praktyce zawodowej większości fizjoterapeutów. Natomiast promowanie zdrowia i dobrostanu osób oraz ogółu społeczeństwa, podkreślające znaczenie aktywności fizycznej i ćwiczeń jest jednym z celów zawodowych fizjoterapeutów. Celem pracy jest zaprezentowanie przykładowego opisu fizjoprofilaktyki zintegrowanej z promocją zdrowia. Postanowiono ukazać rodzaje, środki i metody jej oddziaływania w edukacji zdrowotnej, profilaktyce zagrożeń i polityce zdrowotnej.

The aim of the study is to determine motivation of runners from Poland and the Czech Republic in the context of their participation in running competitions. In this study, correlations between age, experience, training period and motives for participation in the competition by comparing the cross-country runners from both countries was researched. The study examined the place of health in the structure of motives. The study involved 847 runners from Poland and 118 from the Czech Republic. The method of a diagnostic survey was carried out using questionnaires. Competition with ourselves, overcoming our own limits, and improving physical fitness are the main motives of runners who participate in running events. Motives related to health are placed in subsequent positions. Polish runners are more sport goal-oriented; this may result from the fact that in the Czech Republic recreational sport is more grounded in culture. Running events are an important element of cross-country passion, since up to nearly 45% of runners from the Czech Republic and more than half from Poland would limit the practice, or stop it, if they did not have eligibility to participate in competitions. Organizers of sports and recreational events involving road running should rather educate runners in the direction of healthy behaviors. They should enrich the content of health education emphasizing the value of active participation and healthy lifestyle over sports rivalry.

The article makes an attempt at providing answers to questions necessary to clarify the doubts related to the universal conviction about the breakthrough of the nineteenth century for the development of health promotion and health prophylaxis. Can ancient texts provide any evidence that it was actually the antiquity that laid the foundations for preventive medicine? Can it be concluded, on the basis of the research conducted by archaeologists, anthropologists and historians, that the increased physical activity and use of diet in antiquity were deliberate preventive actions?

Materiały i metody.
Introduction. Among many pedagogical rules and principles concerning health norms, it is diffi cult to see how much health education will break with ties between different generations, teachers and pupils, vision of health created by media and real perspective of pro-health future. It seems that neither education nor socialization create an “ideal health value,” being fully responsible for a message for the safety of a young generation. Is the lack of the message result from the fall of humanistic refl exivity about health and for health in future? Aim. A lot has been written about teachers. Unlike any other professional group, they are constantly subject to work effi ciency assessment which is done by headmasters, pupils, and society. This paper sets out to fi nd whether teachers – promoters of health – ought to be a guide or an interpreter (or, perhaps, both), so that they can meet pupils’ expectations – not just those of pedagogists. Materials and methods. The study is purely theoretical. However, ideas presented in the article will lead to the development of a theory of health education in relation to phenomenology and practice theory of action. Results. A consciously created critical attitude will work against superfi ciality, spreading health consumerism and health culture degradation. A critical analyzing of TV health images will help an audience to become more aware of an advantage of health values over a chase for health recognized as a commodity. It will lead to both selfunderstanding and awareness of another person through the question: Which areas (whose? to whom?) of health reality are presented in particular TV texts and images concerning health issues? Conclusion. It is important that teachers cooperate with pedagogues/psychologists, because the school curriculum is designated to shape pupil personality and identity. The recognition of health factors should be included in the school curriculum and education (health education, health teaching, and socialization).

Opis:
Objectives: The presented study explored health beliefs and experiences as well as health education needs of low-educated employees (LEEs) (incomplete primary, primary, lower secondary and basic vocational education) in comparison to those with higher education (secondary and tertiary education) in four European countries: Latvia, Poland, Slovenia and Spain. The main aim was to identify a specificity of low-educated employees (LEEs) by capturing their opinions, experiences, attitudes and needs concerning health education. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 1691 individuals with the status of an employee (approximately 400 respondents in each of 4 countries participating in the project). The respondents were aged 25-54 (both the control group and the target group consisted in 1/3 of the following age groups: 25-34, 35-44 and 45-54). The respondents were interviewed during the years 2009 and 2010 with a structured questionnaire concerning their health, health behaviours as well as educational needs concerning health education. Results: The study revealed substantial differences in the attitudes of people from this group concerning methodology of health education. LEEs prefer more competitions and campaigns and less written educational materials in comparison to those with higher education. Additionally, they more often perceive a fee, longer time, necessity to take part in a knowledge test and a concern that their health will be checked as factors that can discourage them from taking part in a health training. On the other hand, LEEs can by encouraged to take part in such a training by a media broadcast concerning the event, snacks or lottery during the training, or financial incentives. Conclusions: The results of the study proved the need for specific health education guidelines to conduct health education for low-educated employees. These guidelines should take in account the sources of health education preferred by LEEs as well as the factors that can encourage/discourage their participation in trainings concerning health.

Objectives: To assess relationship between physical activity (PA) and perceived work ability amongst teachers from the Upper Silesia, Poland. Material and Methods: The study involved 171 teachers (129 women, 42 men) of primary and secondary schools of the Upper Silesia, Poland. Physical education teachers were excluded from the study. The level of PA was estimated using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire short version, and perceived work ability was estimated using Work Ability Index (WAI). Results: Male teachers had significantly higher levels of vigorous-intensity PA, moderateintensity PA, and total weekly PA than female teachers. The recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) met 46% of studied women and 74% of men. Work ability did not differ between male and female teachers. Work ability was related to age, body mass index (BMI), and PA (vigorous-intensity PA, moderate-intensity PA, total weekly PA). The female teachers with excellent or good WAI had significantly higher levels of vigorous-intensity PA, moderate-intensity PA and total weekly PA than female teachers with moderate or poor WAI. Conclusions: The teachers involving in high or moderate intensity PA could improve their work ability. Further studies should focus on relation between physical activity and work ability among teachers of various age and seniority, from both, urban and rural schools. Objectives The aging of the workforce is an issue that calls for concrete measures to promote the health of older workers. This study reports on the results of the European “ProHealth65+” research project interventions conducted in Poland in relation to workplace health promotion for older workers (WHPOW) and the institutions involved in these programs. Material and Methods A three-stage search of peer-reviewed and grey literature on the WHPOW in Poland. Results A total of 59 WHPOW programs were retrieved in Poland in the observation period (2000–2015). Most of these aimed at improving the Qualification and Training or at the Work Climate and attitudes toward older workers. The promotion, organization, and funding of these activities were carried out mainly by supra-national and governmental bodies, enterprises and employers, and educational and trainee institutions. Conclusions Although there is great commitment to the medical surveillance of workers on the part of the Polish occupational health service, our search detected a relatively low number of the WHPOW initiatives. Greater efforts should be made to introduce strategies for addressing aging of the workforce. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2018;31(6):753–761

Introduction and objective. The aim of this study is to evaluate the leisure time physical activity of Polish farmers in the context of meeting health-related recommendations, and to diagnose the social and economic determinants. The analysis concerned leisure and transportation activities of various intensity and sedentary time. Materials and method. Farmers (n=153) aged over 18 were selected from a representative sample of Polish society (n=2039). In order to evaluate LTPA, the long version of the IPAQ was used. Statistically significant differences between the variables were tested using non-parametric tests. The relationship between the amount of exercise recommended by the WHO and studied socio-demographic criteria was assessed using log-linear analysis. Results. The WHO health recommendations were met by 33.3% of farmers. Shares in LTPA (19.1%) and transportation (19.2%) significantly increased the chance of achieving these norms (OR=12.54 and 0.07, respectively). Along with age (≥40 years) and income (≥3000 PLN/Є750) of Polish farmers, the risk of insufficient physical activity increased. Average MET-min/week for LTPA was 299.8±583.4 and transportation – 521.2±1973.9. The average time of sitting during working days was 4.4±2.9, while it was 4.5±3.2 hrs/day during weekends. Conclusions. Health-promoting changes are necessary among Polish farmers, including an increase in the awareness of health benefits and the necessity of undertaking physically active ways of spending leisure time. It seems to be a legitimate action to develop a mini-tourist trail in the rural environment as a means of promoting physical activity also among women aged over 40, and from lower income groups, who are especially threatened by inactivity.

The purpose of the current study was to assess servant leadership dimensions, perceived mental health benefits, and correlations between the two following an eight-week servant leadership theory-driven salsa dance programme taught to novice learners at a West Midlands, UK university. Upon completion of the salsa dance programme (frequency – once per week, intensity – moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, time – 90 minutes, type – group-based Cuban style salsa dance), a paper questionnaire was administered to the participants to complete in person. The questionnaire contained 18 items related to servant leadership dimensions (authenticity, empowerment, humility, standing back, and stewardship) in terms of the teaching and learning of salsa dance and four items related to perceived mental health benefits (mood enhancement, self-confidence, skill mastery, and social well-being). Authenticity and stewardship were rated higher in females when compared to males. Differences were found between perceived mental health benefits in both females and males with mood enhancement rated highest in both genders. This is the first study we are aware of to have applied principles of servant leadership in the teaching of salsa dance as a leisure-time physical activity. Servant leadership may have facilitated the high perceived mental health benefits observed.

Rising number of chronic diseases worldwide requires improvement of patients’ care system, especially in disease prevention and health promotion. Therefore it is justified to broaden the range of services in community pharmacies in Poland. The aim of this study was to evaluate pharmacists’ opinion about health screenings for chronic diseases in community pharmacies. Research was based on original, anonymous questionnaire administered between July 2016 and March 2017 to pharmacists (n=175; 77.7% women and 22.3% men) practicing in a community pharmacy in Wielkopolska (n=106; 77.4% women and 22.6% men) and Zachodniopomorskie Region (n=69; 78.3% women and 21.7% men). The effect of age and gender on pharmacists’ opinions was evaluated. Among pharmacists who responded, 93.7% agreed that patients don’t have health check-ups when they don’t experience bothersome symptoms of a disease. Almost three fourth of respondents considered implementation of health screening services in pharmacy as valuable as it can have positive influence on development of pharmaceutical care. Younger pharmacists (p=0.019) who collaborate with physicians (p=0.009) were most certain about it. 80,0% of pharmacist, in particular younger one, would offer their patients the screening services (p=0.006). 79,4% pharmacists confirmed that this new service should be reimbursed by National Health Fund. Development of new health screening services in community pharmacies may help to prevent or lower the risk of complications associated with common chronic diseases.

A healthy lifestyle is understood as a conscious action aimed at increasing the potential of one’s health and eliminating behaviours threatening it. The family, school, peer groups and media influence the shaping of such a worldview among children and youth. These environments should create a young person’s sense of obligation to care for their own health potential and to make informed choices concerning a healthy lifestyle. The aim of the article is to draw attention to the role of health-promoting behaviours of adolescents aged 11-15 as an important factor in creating a healthy society. The data of the Institute of Mother and Child included in the report „Health of students in 2018 in the light of the new HBSC (Health Behaviour in School-aged Children) research model” and the data from an analogical report from 2014 „Health and health behaviours of school youth in Poland in the context of selected sociodemo¬graphic conditions”. The analysis of selected data presented by the Institute of Mother and Child shows that young people are mostly aware of the importance of health-promoting behaviours for their health in the future.

Predictions for the upcoming decades suggest an increase in the number of elderly people in Europe; due to low fertility and the rise in average life expectancy, societies age considerably faster. The nature of these changes signifies that a complex demographic process is taking place. In consequence, one can notice an increase in the demand for personal and nursing care activities provided in the natural human environment, or in various institutions, by adequately prepared, specialized medical staff. Creating the best possible procedures for assisting elderly people is a multifaceted and dynamic problem. The constantly changing expectations regarding healthcare providers, and the higher social and health awareness are challenging medical sciences and social services to provide the oldest generation with the best quality of life. The life satisfaction measure for elderly people is their activity which determines an independent, self-reliant, satisfactory, and long life.

The quantitative research, the partial results described in this article, was carried out as part of the COVID-HL network (covid-hl.eu). They aimed to determine to what extent health promotion and safety measures were taken in Polish schools during the COVID-19 pandemic for members of school communities. A survey method was used to conduct the research, which included an online distributed questionnaire. The research sample consisted of principals and deputy principals of schools located in eight provinces (N = 803). The research showed that school principals were highly involved in implementing health promotion activities and were, at the same time, severely burdened with tasks related to ensuring the safety of all school community representatives and maintaining proper organisation of school work during the pandemic.

Background. Mobile applications are perceived as a promising form of supporting beneficial health behaviours. Solutions supporting physical activity remain one of the key areas of development in m-health. The main objective of the study was to assess functionalities of mobile applications supporting physical activity that are the most popular in Poland. Material and methods. The first 100 applications listed in the category of ‘Health and fitness’ of the ‘Best apps’ ranking in the Google Play online store were screened. From that list, 8 applications fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected for analysis. Results. The reminders about training or established objectives was the most common functionality available in the analysed applications (88%, 7 out of 8 applications). Functionalities available in 5 out of 8 applications (63%) included a workout diary, sharing achievements with friends, and an option of verbal instructions during exercises. Two main categories of sports applications can be distinguished on the basis of the performed analysis: applications for monitoring and analysing physical activity (50%, n = 4) and applications providing instructional materials to support self-training. Conclusions. Mobile applications supporting physical activity are an important new tool for implementing health promotion interventions. Sports applications can contribute to maintaining trainings.
Materiał i metody. Wstępnej ocenie poddano 100 pierwszych aplikacji znajdujących się w rankingu „Najlepsze aplikacje” w kategorii „Zdrowie i fitness” internetowego sklepu Google Play. Ostatecznie analizą objęto 8 aplikacji spełniających przyjęte kryteria. Wyniki.

Promotion and prophylaxis are related to the care about health. To be healthy, you have to take care of your health, both physical and spiritual. More and more we realize that the issue of health does not concern only a single human being or medical staff but also countries, societies and the Church, which was made clear by the COVID-19 pandemic. This article shows whether and to which degree is the Catholic Church actively engaged in the promotion of health and prophylaxis of diseases? Or does it only watch the sick offering them just spiritual support? It is worth researching this issue on the basis of selected works from the health sciences and Polish theological literature after the Second Vatican Council.

Opis:
Health is a condition of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of illness or disability. Health is not something one receives but something one has to work and strive towards. This presupposes active efforts from the individual, the family, and the community. In the chain of causative factors and pathological processes which can lead to illness, disability, and death, there are many links, some known and some unknown. Our resources and means must be applied at that point in the causative chain where the best prospects lie for reducing the incidence of illness, disability, and death. Diseases due lifestyle and environmental factors now dominate our health statistics. Material standards of living and personal philosophy of life bear a close relationship to the origin and development of these diseases. In that respect, regular physical activity is seen as an essential component in a lifestyle which itself is the basis for the health promoting idea. In our review we look into physical activity and its influence on health.
Chorobogenny styl życia i czynniki środowiskowe dominują obecnie w naszych statystykach zdrowotności. Materialne warunki życia i filozofia osobista leżą u podstaw powstawania i rozwoju chorób.

Opis:
Objectives The main aim of this study was to examine the health behavior patterns of soldiers in the Hungarian Defense Forces and to introduce health behavior profiles according to the cluster analysis of lifestyle factors. Material and Methods The soldiers (N = 5475) who underwent health tests in 2011–2015 participated in this cross-sectional study. The factors included in the analysis are the following: age, sex, diseases diagnosed, the body mass index, eating habits, the smoking status, daily physical activity, sporting habits, the presence of psychosomatic symptoms, mental toughness and sleep apnea. The response options for each factor were scored on a linear scale; the minimum number of points available was –47.5 pts and the maximum number was 48.5 pts according to the 24 factors. Finally, the authors created health profiles typical of the pattern with the cluster analysis of the data. Results As a result of the cluster analysis, 16 distinct profiles were found, 10 of which differed significantly (p < 0.05) from each other. The lowest point value achieved was 3.1 pts and the highest was 26.2 pts. The lowest number of points was achieved by the cluster, 1.8% of the sample, with the highest average age (43.5±7.2 years) in which women showed the highest participation (46%). The 2 clusters with the highest numbers of points, 2.9% and 5.5% of the sample, were the 2 groups with the lowest average age (33.7±7.1 years and 34.3±7.9 years). Conclusions The significance of the health profiles obtained during this examination with the Hungarian Defense Forces is that the health promotion intervention opportunities may be determined by clusters, the health behavior factor with which the authors can reach higher health benefits can be chosen and the effectiveness of the interventions carried out can be traced easily. Opis:
Sexuality is an integral part of personality of each human being. No earnestly conducted sex education is a common cause of engaging in risky sexual behaviours. The aim of the study is to evaluate the role of sex education in health promotion and to present the results of the studies of the effects of school sex education on sexual behaviour of young people. The period of adolescence is characterized by a more frequent risk-taking behaviour. Among adolescents it is observed that the average age of sexual initiation has decreased, the frequency of making sexual contact and a number of sexual partners has increased, as well as the insufficient dissemination of the use of condoms and other methods of contraception every time sexual intercourse takes place. The task of health promotion is to influence determinants of health, among others, through sex education. Research confirms the positive impact of complex sex education, carried out in accordance with the recommendations of international organizations, on a lower frequency of engaging in risky sexual behaviour. It seems appropriate to take action to disseminate appropriate for the level of psychosexual development sex education in schools.

Background What significantly affects the health of an individual health behaviour. It is of particular importance in the case of people working in very harsh environmental conditions. The aim of this study is to examine health behaviour among miners. Material and Methods The research data was collected with the use of the diagnostic survey method based on the Health Behaviour Inventory questionnaire developed by Juczyński. Two hundred coal miners were surveyed. The results obtained were subjected to a statistical analysis. A significance level of p < 0.05 was assumed, which indicates the occurrence of statistically significant differences or relations. Results The level of health behaviour among miners may be determined as medium and low. The research group obtained the best results with regard to their mental attitude, while their preventive behaviour received the worst evaluation. Conclusions The research confirms the necessity of implementing health promotion programmes among miners, which would be focusing particularly on health behaviour.
Najlepsze wyniki badana grupa uzyskała w zakresie nastawienia psychicznego, a najgorzej ocenione zostały zachowania profilaktyczne. Wnioski Badania potwierdzają konieczność wdrażania programów promocji zdrowia wśród górników szczególnie ukierunkowanych na zachowania zdrowotne. Med. Pr. 2015;66(6):753–761
