Opis:
The main aim of this article is to present the results of studies on the involvement into the role of grandparents and relationship with their grandchildren, and the importance of grandchildren with building a well-being of grandparents in terms of meaning and purpose of life. The research bases on the latest reports of psychological and sociological researches and on classification of styles of grandparenting proposed by Cherlin and Furstenberg. The results indicate the existence of differences between styles of grandparenting (involved, companionate, remote). The differences are related to contacts between grandchildren and grandparents, the amount of the forms of activities with grandchildren, the level of help which the grandparents offer to the parents and the significance that grandchildren have with building well-being of grandparents.

Zmiany zachodzące w ostatnich latach w rodzinie coraz częściej przyczyniają się do przejmowania przez dziadków ról związanych z opieką nad wnukami. Dlatego też ważne staje się poszukiwanie odpowiedzi na pytanie dotyczące czynników warunkujących charakter relacji pomiędzy wnukami a „dziadkami-rodzicami”. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników badań ukazujących relacje pomiędzy wnukami a „dziadkami-rodzicami” oraz rolę, jaką najstarsi członkowie rodziny odegrali, zdaniem wnuków, w ich życiu.
Changes in the family in recent years have contributed more and more frequently to grandparents taking over roles related to caring for grandchildren. Therefore, it becomes important to look for an answer to the question about factors determining the nature of the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents – parents. The purpose of this paper is to present research results showing the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents – parents and the role that the eldest family members played, in the opinion of grandchildren, in their lives.

Dziadkowie to przedstawiciele najstarszego rodzinnego pokolenia, swoisty pomost pomiędzy przeszłością a przyszłością. Dla młodszych generacji stanowią często wsparcie: ekonomiczne, opiekuńcze oraz wychowawcze. Służą nieocenioną pomocą w sytuacjach kryzysowych. Szczególna więź łączy ich z pokoleniem wnuków. Widzą w nich przedłużenie własnego życia i budują z nimi wyjątkowe relacje emocjonalne. Pełnienie funkcji aktywnych dziadków daje im możliwość czerpania satysfakcji, odmłodzenia, poczucia bycia ważnymi oraz potrzebnymi. Rola dziadków wymaga również doskonalenia się, swoistej edukacji. Bez stosownej refleksji można bowiem, będąc babcią i dziadkiem, popełniać szereg błędów.
Grandparents are the representatives of the eldest generation in the family, constituting a sort of bridge between the past and the future. They frequently provide financial, protective and educational support to the youngest generation. They also provide invaluable help in critical situations. There exists an extraordinary bond between them and their grandchildren. Grandparents view them as a continuation of their own lives and establish exceptional emotional relationships with them. Their performance of the role of active grandparents boosts their satisfaction, makes them feel younger, important and needed. The role of grandparents also requires constant self-improvement as well as special education. Without relevant reflection, though, grandparents may commit one mistake after another.

CEL NAUKOWY: Celem artykułu jest próba znalezienia odpowiedzi na pytanie, jaka jest rola dziadków w rozwoju, wychowaniu oraz w opiece nad dzieckiem z ASD, a także jakie są sposoby wspierania dziadków w podejmowanych przez nich rolach. PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Problem badawczy został sformułowany w formie pytań: 1) Jakie role podejmują dziadkowie dziecka z ASD? 2) Czy i jakiego wsparcia potrzebują dziadkowie w pełnieniu roli babci/dziadka? 3) W jaki sposób dziadkowie mogliby wspierać rozwój wnuka/ wnuczki z ASD? W pracy zastosowano metodę analizy literatury przedmiotu. PROCES WYWODU: Punktem wyjścia artykułu jest wskazanie objawów zaburzenia ze spektrum autyzmu, następnie przegląd literatury dotyczącej roli dziadków w życia dziecka. Następna cześć dotyczy przeglądu badań nad dziadkami dzieci z ASD. Ostatnia część dotyczy wskazania, w jaki sposób dziadkowie mogą uczestniczyć w życiu wnuka/wnuczki z ASD, w jaki sposób mogą wspierać jego rozwój, współuczestniczyć w wychowaniu i opiece. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Z przeprowadzonych analiz wynika przede wszystkim brak do‑ statecznej ilości badań i analiz dotyczących dziadków dziecka z ASD, a dalej wskazują one trudności w zrozumieniu zachowań i funkcjonowania dziecka z ASD przez dziadków oraz trudności w odgrywaniu roli babci/dziadka wnuka/wnuczki z ASD. WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: W świetle przeprowadzonych analiz należy zwrócić uwagę na potrzebę prowadzenia badań nad dziadkami dzieci z ASD, a także na podjęcie działań ukierunkowanych na wspieranie seniorów w odgrywaniu roli babci/dziadka dziecka z ASD.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is an attempt to answer the questions what the role of grandparents is in the development, upbringing and care of a child with autism spectrum disorders and how to support grandparents in their roles. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem was formulated in the form of the following questions: 1) What roles do the grandparents of a child with ASD take? 2) What kind of support do they need in their role of a grandmother or a grandfather? 3) How could grandparents support the development of their grandchild with ASD? The study uses the method of document analysis‑literature on the subject. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The starting point of the research is to indicate the symp‑ toms of autism spectrum disorder, followed by the review of the literature concerning the role of grandparents in the child life. The next section refers to the review of grandparents of children with ASD The last part relates to the ways the grandparents can participate in a life of their grandson / granddaughter with ASD, support their development and co‑participate in their upbringing and care. RESEARCH RESULTS: The conducted analyzes show, first of all, the lack of a sufficient amount of research and analyzes concerning the grandparents of a child with ASD, and then, indicate the difficulties in understanding the behavior and functioning of a child with ASD by grandparents and difficulties in performing the role of a grandmother / grandfather of a child with ASD. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In the light of the analyzes carried out, attention should be paid to the need for conducting research on grandparents of children with ASD, and undertaking activities aimed at supporting seniors in performing the roles of a grandmother/ grandfather of a child with ASD.

Aim: In the last decade, many countries around the world have seen an increase in the number of skip-generation families in which grandparents take over the responsibility of raising grandchildren. The phenomenon described is also becoming more common in Poland. This article presents selected results of a study aimed at better understanding the experiences of grandparents raising grandchildren in skipped generation families. Methods: Participants were purposively selected from grandparents raising grandchildren living in skipped generation families in the Podlaskie Province. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 participants. The use of a biographical perspective in the research provided detailed narratives of the life experiences of older grandparents in skip generation families. Results and conclusions: The grandparents’ stories show the duality of experience consisting simultaneously of stress/satisfaction, sadness/joy, being seen/not seen. Addressing the issues faced by grandparents living in households with the skipped generation is important as it can reduce stress levels. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a model of support for grandparents raising grandchildren in skipped generation households which could be relevant for adapting to a new life situation and increasing psychological well-being.
Cel: W ostatniej dekadzie w wielu krajach na świecie obserwuje się wzrost liczby rodzin z pominiętym pokoleniem, w których dziadkowie przejmują obowiązki związane z wychowaniem wnuków. Opisywane zjawisko staje się również coraz bardziej powszechne w Polsce. Artykuł prezentuje wybrane wyniki badań, których celem jest lepsze zrozumienie doświadczeń dziadków wychowujących wnuki w rodzinach z pominiętym pokoleniem. Metody: Uczestnicy zostali celowo wybrani spośród dziadków wychowujących wnuki, żyjących w rodzinach z pominiętym pokoleniem w województwie podlaskim. Dane zostały zebrane za pomocą częściowo ustrukturyzowanych wywiadów pogłębionych z 20 uczestnikami. Zastosowanie w badaniach perspektywy biograficznej pozwoliło na uzyskanie szczegółowych narracji dotyczących doświadczeń życiowych starszych dziadków w rodzinach z pominiętym pokoleniem. Wyniki i wnioski: Opowieści dziadków ukazują dwoistość doświadczenia składającego się jednocześnie ze stresu/satysfakcji, smutku/radości, bycia widzialnym/niewidzialnym. Rozwiązywanie problemów, z którymi borykają się dziadkowie żyjący w gospodarstwach domowych z pominiętym pokoleniem, jest istotne, ponieważ może zmniejszyć poziom stresu. Dlatego też konieczne jest wypracowanie modelu wsparcia dziadków wychowujących wnuki w rodzinach z pominiętym pokoleniem, co mogłoby mieć znaczenie w kontekście adaptacji do nowej sytuacji życiowej i zwiększenia dobrostanu psychicznego.

The aim of the article is to share thoughts on the role of grandparents (great-grandparents) in the process of raising children - grandchildren (great-grandchildren). After all, the concept of the family includes the activities and tasks that the family performs for its members; it plays an essential role in satisfying all the needs necessary for a proper life among relatives. It is in the family that children learn basic life skills, it is there that they acquire behaviour patterns and develop their personality. The nature of the contacts and communication of the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren depends mainly on the grandparents, on how they understand their role in the family and how they will want to fulfil it. The article highlights three main types of relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, proposed by K. Appelt.

Artykuł podejmuje tematykę wychowawczej roli seniorów(dziadków) w rodzinie. Celem jest ukazanie konkretnie wychowawczej i socjalizacyjnej roli w obszarach: wychowanie w rodzinie, wychowanie kulturowe, wychowanie społeczne, wychowanie religijno-moralne oraz analiza ich kapitału intelektualnego racjonalizowanego, jako mądrość starca. Z analizy wynika, że role seniorów nadal mają ważny wpływ wychowawczy na dorastających wnuków. Dobre kontakty z dziadkami uczą nastolatków miłości i troski o drugiego człowieka, poznania historii rodziny, tradycji i wiary w domu.  Wciąż są jeszcze strażnikami: pamięci zbiorowej, więzi rodzinnych, kronikarzami historii, mądrością wiary, moralności i dziedzictwa kulturowego. Zauważa się jednak, iż rady udzielane młodemu pokoleniu nie dla wszystkich stanowią uniwersalną receptę na szczęśliwe życie.
The article deals with the educational role of seniors (grandparents) in the family. The aim is to show a specific educative and socializing role in the areas of family upbringing, cultural and social education, religious-moral upbringing and analysis of their rationalized intellectual capital as the wisdom of an old man. The analysis shows that the roles of seniors still have an important educative impact on adolescent grandchildren. Good contacts with grandparents teach teens love and care for each other, learn about family history, traditions and faith at home. They are still the guards of collective memory, family ties, chronicles of history, wisdom of faith, morality and cultural heritage. It is noticed, however, that advice given to the young generation is not for everyone a universal recipe for a happy life.

Background: The issue of grandparents’ support provided to their families is undertaken in Polish literature very seldom. There are no studies concerning single mother families. The purpose of the article is to examine the extent to which grandparents provide support to grandchildren brought up in single mother families, and determine the relationship between the grandparents’ support and the grandchildren’s quality of life. Materials and Methods: The survey data were collected from 119 people from single mother families. The Student’s Life Satisfaction Scale SLSS was used to test the quality of life and the Social Support Scale (SWS) was used to test the strength and type of support from grandparents. Results: Mother’s parents are involved in each of the considered types of support in a higher degree than father’s parents, regardless of the place of residence of the single mother family. In small towns maternal grandparents provide information support more often than paternal grandparents, maternal grandmothers engage in instrumental aid to grandchildren more often than paternal grandparents. In cases of families living in large cities, when the paternal grandfather gives instrumental, emotional or evaluative support, grandchildren assess their quality of life significantly better. The assessment of quality of life is also higher in cases of maternal grandfather’s emotional engagement in support for grandchildren. Conclusions: The results suggest that the grandfathers’ (particularly paternal grandfather’s) support in the single mother family is positively connected with quality of life of grandchildren. It can be assumed that supporting grandparents contribute to strengthening the resilience of whole family.

The aim of this paper is to make a quick overview of the literature concerning not only the variety of concepts of ageing and activities that older people may take in their free-time, but also the significance of intergenerational family relationships, especially the grandparents-grandchildren relationship. On this background authors’ own research on this topic is presented. The obtained results confirmed the hypothesis that younger grandparents are more vital and have more free-time activities than the older. Moreover, the findings indicate the importance of role that grandparents may play in grandchildren’s life (‘stabilizer’, ‘family national guard’, ‘arbiter’, ‘historian’) regardless of their age. It is also shown that with increasing age and declining social networks grows the need to maintain close contact with younger generations of the family.

Celem opracowania jest zwrócenie uwagi na znaczenie, jakie aktualnie młodzi ludzie przypisują oddziaływaniom socjalizacyjno-wychowawczym dziadków. Głównym obszarem rozważań staje się rodzina jako miejsce międzypokoleniowej transmisji wartości oraz międzypokoleniowych kontaktów. The aim of this study is taking notice of a meaning which is currently attributed by young people to socialising and pedagogical influence of their grandparents. The main area of consideration is the family as a location of intergenerational transmission of values and intergenerational contacts. In order to show a particular type of cultural code transferred in the family environment, the author brings extracts of student narration, takes notice of a fact that issues of intergenerational relations grandparents – grandchildren settled on borderland of numerous disciplines, is an object of interest for intercultural education.

W krajach postsowieckich koniec XX wieku był czasem krytycznych zmian, kiedy to struktury instytucji społecznych i normy ludzi żyjących w czasach przemian zmieniły się radykalnie w bardzo krótkim okresie. Proces zmian w Estonii miał jeszcze większy wpływ na społeczność rosyjską. Ich mobilność społeczna zwiększyła się znacznie w ciągu jednego pokolenia w porównaniu do ludności estońskiej, ponieważ jeszcze przed odzyskaniem przez Estonię niepodległości pracownicy przemysłowi stanowili połowę dorosłej ludności (Tammaru 1999). Trzydzieści lat wcześniej Herbert Marcuse (1966) zauważył, że w zachodnich kulturach deproletaryzacja stała się nowym zjawiskiem polegającym na zastępowaniu klasy pracowników przemysłowych przez pracowników sektora usługowego. W rezultacie życie większości ludzi stało się bardziej niestabilne i mobilne. Rosjanie mieszkający w Estonii nauczyli się poszerzać swoje kulturowe horyzonty, podejmować ryzyko z własnej inicjatywy i przekazywać swoim dzieciom i wnukom te nowe poglądy.
In the post-Soviet counties, the end of the 20th century was a critical period of transition when the structure of the social institutions, and the norms of people living through the transition, were radically changed within a very short time. The process of change in Estonia had impacted more on the Russian community, whose social mobility has considerably increased within one generation, when compared with the Estonian population, since even before the restoration of Estonian independence, industrial workers made up half of the adult population (Tammaru 1999). Thirty years earlier Herbert Marcuse (1966) had noted that in western cultures deproletarisation was a new feature of culture, with the industrial working class being replaced by workers in the services sector. The result for most people had been a more unstable and mobile style of life. The Russians living in Estonia had learned to expand their cultural horizons, to take risks on their own initiative, and to teach these new worldviews to their children and grandchildren.

The article presents the relationship between temporal perspective and wisdom transmission of the people in late adulthood to the younger generation. The participants were asked to write a short “Letter to a grandchild”. The letters written by 119 participants aged over 60 years old were analyzed qualititavely in terms of content and form, using categories from previous studies (Dryll, Tokarska, Cierpka, 2016). In order to assess temporal perspective the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) by Philip G. Zimbardo and John Boyd was used (adaptation by Aneta Przepiórka, Małgorzata Sobol-Kwapińska and Tomasz Jankowski, 2016). A number of dependencies between transmission characteristics and temporal perspective scales was observed. The results follow a characteristic pattern where instead of the focus on timing (past, present, and future), an attitude (positive or negative) seems to be more important. The results do not support the concept of a balanced temporal perspective, which can be explained by cultural differences as well as developmental characteristics of the participants.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The authors’ aim is to create an original typology of the social roles of grandparents in modern society. The reflection is set in the context of demographic changes related to ageing processes and theories of life cycles. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main thesis is that despite the significant sociocultural changes occurring in the context of the intensifying aging processes of societies, it is possible to indicate the multiplicity of roles played by grandparents. The article is based on two research projects conducted among women aged 50‑64 and men aged 55‑69 living in the Lubuskie Voivodeship. The data used has a qualitative character, and the empirical basis is 110 written biographical stories. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The background of the study is data from public statistics that illustrate the deepening ageing processes of the region’s population. Unfavourable demographic processes are intertwined with sociocultural changes related to the change of gender roles, professional activity, and free time. This element is related to the concept of life phases. An extensive theoretical introduction precedes the analysis of the results of research on the typology of the social roles of women and men as grandparents. RESEARCH RESULTS: An original typology of the roles of grandparents in the modern world was proposed. The mechanisms related to the roles focus mainly on meeting the needs of the family in the first place. We can draw an axis of traditional vs. modern, which leaves room for some other indirect possibilities (e.g. space for female self‑realization). However, it depends on the sociocultural factors and scripts implemented at earlier stages of family life. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: There is no uniform and coherent grandfathering pattern, and there is a clear difference between the sexes on the axis of involvement in caring functions. 
CEL NAUKOWY: Celem pracy jest stworzenie oryginalnej typologii ról społecznych babć i dziadków we współczesnym społeczeństwie. Rozważania osadzone są w kontekście zmian demograficznych związanych z procesami starzenia się społeczeństw i teorii faz życia. PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Główna teza rozważań jest taka, że pomimo znaczących zmian społeczno‑kulturowych zachodzących w kontekście nasilających się procesów starzenia się społeczeństw, można wskazać wielość ról społecznych odgrywanych przez dziadków. Artykuł powstał na podstawie dwóch projektów badawczych przeprowadzonych wśród kobiet w wieku 50‑64 lat i mężczyzn w wieku 55‑69 lat mieszkających w województwie lubuskim. Wykorzystane dane mają charakter jakościowy, a podstawą empiryczną jest 110 spisanych opowiadań biograficznych. PROCES WYWODU: Tłem rozważań są dane statystyki publicznej, które obrazują pogłębiające się procesy starzenia się ludności regionu. Niekorzystne procesy demograficzne przeplatają się ze zmianami społeczno‑kulturowymi związanymi ze zmianą ról płciowych, aktywnością zawodową i czasem wolnym. Ten element jest związany z koncepcją faz życia. Analizę wyników badań nad typologią ról społecznych kobiet i mężczyzn jako dziadków poprzedza obszerne wprowadzenie teoretyczne. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Zaproponowano oryginalną typologię ról społecznych dziadków i babć we współczesnym świecie. Mechanizmy związane z rolami skupiają się przede wszystkim na zaspokajaniu potrzeb rodziny. Możemy nakreślić oś tradycyjność vs. nowoczesność, co pozostawia miejsce na inne pośrednie możliwości (np. przestrzeń dla kobiecej samorealizacji). Zależy to jednak od czynników społeczno‑kulturowych i scenariuszy realizowanych na wcześniejszych etapach życia rodziny. WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE, REKOMENDACJE: Chociaż można wskazać wielość wzorów roli babci, nie ma jednolitego i spójnego wzorca dziadka. Można także wskazać wyraźną różnicę między płciami na osi zaangażowania w funkcje opiekuńcze. Warto śledzić zmiany zachodzące w proponowanych modelach w czasie.
