Opis:
The idea of the moral good is considered a desirable and appreciated real existence. With reference to teachers it constitutes a personal pattern of judicious acting. Their special task is not only to teach necessary knowledge to students but also to instil moral conduct in them i.e. to form ‘a correct character’. This notion was present at the beginning of the 20th century and is also reflected in Archbishop Józef Bilczewski’s letter ‘The Character’ (1920). The ideas presented there remain still valid also in the present historic moment of the nation.

Opis:
For the purpose of specifying the concept of the quality of preschool education, this publication presents part of the results of a wider study aimed at researching the notion of the “good/quality kindergarten teacher”. 72 students preparing to become preschool teachers in the Faculty of Primary and Preschool Education of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Bulgaria took part in this research. The main method used for research is analysis of the students’ individual written essays on the subject “My idea of a good/quality kindergarten teacher”. The collected essays were subjected to qualitative analysis aimed at the distribution of the contained opinions regarding the essence of the notion of “good/quality kindergarten teacher” into an unlimited number of semantic categories, provisionally divided into two main groups: 1) general personal qualities, skills, attitudes, etc.; and 2) specialized professional qualities, skills, attitudes, etc. This paper presents the distributions of 136 categories, defined following the analysis of the data. Since half of the participating students (36) were approached at the beginning of their university education and the other half (36) participated during the middle of their last year, the publication specifically marks some of the most important differences in the relevant viewpoints of first-year students in comparison to the opinion of graduating students.

1989 was a dividing line in the history of Central & Eastern European countries. Not only political systems were re-organized, but also social and cultural relations had to be revisited. It is valid to education as well because it welcomed new structures, subjects and philosophies, very often in new educational environments. In Hungary, language education was in a special situation: due to the changing social demands it had to face new challenges with the introduction of foreign languages not widely taught up to this time. The three pillars of the study are the analysis of the shift from a socialist regime into capitalism and its reflection in language education, the description of the appearance of different languages in public and higher education, and the introduction of new methods and synergies applied in the new era of FLT (foreign language teaching). Illustrations of present results are provided from the two far ends of education, namely, pre-school education and kindergarten teacher-training.

Opis:
Throughout the years. researchers searched for the definition of a good teacher. This article offers to learn from model educators, fictional and historical, how to define values, perception and practices which characterize good teachers. Four fictional teachers were chosen based on two characteristics: First, author’s descriptions that underline their good qualities as a person and as a teacher. Second, remarks from their  students’ and/or students’ parents or guardians, stating their acknowledgment of the teachers’ special qualities. and their gratitude for the learning experience they shared. A qualitative narrative analysis of these teachers – ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘Ann of Green Gables’ and his sequel ‘Anne from Avonlea”, ‘Up the down Staircase’ and ‘Goodbye Mr. Chips’ – defined five major characteristics which represent the exceptional teacher: holistic perception of the student, identifying and addressing students’ unique needs, emphasis on student-teacher relationship, creative teaching, a sense of mission and an inspiring personality. Examining the work of exceptional educators such as Ann Sullivan (Helen Keler’s tutor). Janusz Korczak, and Haime Escelante, reveals common themes which corresponds with fictional model teachers characteristics. Qualitative interviews with 14 Israeli rural high school teachers (7 homeroom educators and 7 subject teachers) emphasized similar characteristics of their role perceptions and practices. The key to higher achievements, educational and academic alike, lies in the hands of the teachers. If these traits characterize the ‘good teacher’ we should consider merging then into teachers’ preparatory and in-work professional training, as well as teachers’ evaluation processes. Let us learn from good examples how to become ‘good teachers’.

The aim of this article is to present a portrait of the so-called good foreign language teacher, which has been created on the basis of the comments made by about 850 Polish students of modern languages, and students representing various types of schools (from primary schools, through middle schools, to secondary schools). In this picture, teacher personality traits, the majority of which are regarded as values not only in professional life (e.g. in the teaching profession), but also in personal life, have ranked the highest. Personality traits have overshadowed the other two groups of qualities which foreign language teachers are also equipped with, i.e. didactic and glottodidactic ones. The presentation of the research results has been preceded by a theoretical part where teacher personality and its role in (language) education have been briefly discussed.

Opis:
Miejsce i rola, role podmiotowe uczestników obecne w całokształcie działań osobistych i społecznych decydują zarówno o jakości pedagogiki, jak i o sensie całego życia. Jest wielka różnica między „czynieniem dobrze”, a „czynieniem dobra”.
In Tadeusz Kotarbiński’s outlook on life, both in his attitude toward the world and in the cognitive and practical, real aspect, praxeology and ethics of reliable guardianship are unexpectedly, creatively and masterfully joined with one another within the art of living and education. The most important thing about Tadeusz Kotarbiński is his radically rational drift . Reism, understood in the personally-carnal sense, dictates ethics’ independence from religious beliefs, and praxeology determines the activism of this ethics. Its aim is thus to improve thinking and acting by eliminating appearances, to specify the language in use and to make the mind structures verifiable. The article shows – in some necessary briefness – Kotarbiński’s developed and deepened views upon the general condition of contemporary reality from ethics’ and pedagogics’ point of view, the ethical condition in accordance with the basic assumptions as well as the condition of pedagogics and some postulates for pedagogy. The defense of the so-called invariants, i.e. the resources of empirically and rationally well-founded “ethical truths” – as Maria Dąbrowska and Maria Ossowska used to say – “some simple moral truths humanity leans on” – constitutes one of the biggest tasks for educators. The conclusion resulting from here is that praxeology is helpful in proper pedagogical activity in the process of initiating ethics. The co-existence of ethics, pedagogics and praxeology in the work of improving man’s quality and improving our world, according to Professor Kotarbiński, leads to a general remark that the most important thing in the teacher’s activity is “the real status of the pupil.” The place and the role, the subjective roles of participants taking part in the whole of the personal and social activities, determine both pedagogics’ quality and the sense of one’s whole life. There is a great difference between “doing good” and “doing right.”
