Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to explore causal complexity in the relationship between environmental uncertainty and firm’s performance. Due to complexity in the external and internal environment, the relationship between environment and firm performance rests not only on a single attribute but on the interrelation and complementarities between multiple characteristics such as firm features and external factors. This study examines the influence of a firm’s specific characteristics and the dimensions of environmental uncertainty on the company’s performance. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis is used to analyze data collected via questionnaires from 58 Polish small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The results suggest that characteristics of the general business environment, as well as the firm-specific characteristics all matter to firm performance. In addition, our findings clearly demonstrate that the determination of high firm performance is underpinned by substantial interdependence among the selected conditions and complexity. Therefore, any particular condition may have a different or even opposite effect on the outcome depending on the presence or absence of other conditions. Based on this, we conclude that external environmental uncertainty characteristics, with the dimensions of competitive intensity, technological turbulence and market/demand turbulence, are not as important as the other conditions for high-performing firms. The study offers a new perspective on the relationship between environmental uncertainty and firm performance with its systematic comparative analysis of complex cases. It identifies different combinations of conditions (paths) leading to a high firm performance.

Opis:
Job satisfaction is one of the most researched topics in management literature taking into consideration the fact that it has been found out that this concept has many practical implications in the workplace. Job satisfaction is very complex phenomenon which is influenced by numerous factors. Previous studies provide a partial view of job satisfaction, because they are usually focused on the relationship between a single factor and job satisfaction, without taking a global view to indicate how different factors simultaneously affect job satisfaction. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how different factors such as: work family balance, teamwork, personal environment fit, job security and supervisor support simultaneously influence job satisfactions. The sample of the study includes employees of Polish small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis is used to analyze data collected in surveys from 274 employees. The results contribute to research on job satisfaction by outlining several combinations of factors which create a paths to explain employee job satisfaction: (1) teamwork and supervisor support, (2) personal environment fit, job security and supervisor support with absence of work family balance, (3) work family balance, job security and supervisor support.

The aim of this paper is to present the context of intellectual capital in rural area development using the example of fuzzy qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), which is one of the few methodological innovations of recent decades and which bridges the gap between quantitative and qualitative research. Based on surveys and interviews with local organizations, the study examined the relationships between the results of work and the composition of variables that constitute intellectual capital components. The results, related to intellectual capital, were divided into three variables representing human capital (education, experience-years of work, language skills), structural capital (presence of IT system in an organization, the number of procedures and processes) and relational capital (the number of cooperating organizations, the number of NGOs in the community, the level of trust in the manager). The research outcomes showed that different combinations of intellectual capital components led in practice to the same result; nevertheless, human capital was an indispensable element of the combination.

Opis:
University spin-offs have idiosyncratic strengths in comparison to other new firms. However, evidence also shows that Polish university spin-offs have a low survival rate, and only a small percent of them grow into sustainable businesses. The purpose of this paper is to carry out an empirical study to determine the nature of barriers to the growth of Polish university spin-offs, in order to address the two major research questions considered by this paper: what are the major barriers to growth, and which combinations of these barriers have the greatest impact on the performance of the university spin-offs under study? Firstly, this paper attempts to explore these research questions through a literature review and pilot interviews, based on which a questionnaire was developed. Secondly, this study attempts to address the research questions through a fuzzy-set-theoretic approach by using a software package, such as fs/QCA- fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. This paper identifies six key groups of barriers to the growth of university spin-offs in Poland, namely financial, competence, psychological, organizational, informational and formal barriers. Moreover, four alternative configurations of key groups of barriers to the growth of spin-offs that lead to low performance among the organizations examined are distinguished using fs/QCA. This problem is interesting not only from a scientific, but also a practical, point of view, pointing out the need for increased attention, not only from academic entrepreneurs themselves, but also for greater effort from universities and the government to cultivate university spin-offs. Most importantly, simultaneous action in all of these directions is necessary. The continuation of such research is also important, which will consider, on the one hand, a larger sample of firms, and, on the other hand, the results achieved so far and their re-conceptualization.

Previous research demonstrates the importance of social capital, environmental complexity, goal orientation, and project performance. However, the influence of these factors on project performance is unclear and was examined singly, i.e., each factor was studied separately in connection with project performance. The aim of this paper is to examine which configurations of selected factors, such as goal orientation, social capital, and environmental complexity, affect project performance in project-based organizations. This paper argues that these factors simultaneously affect project performance, in different configurations. This study applies fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fs/QCA), which points to three configurations of conditions that influence project performance in project-based organizations. These findings help complement some of the results of previous studies on project performance.

The aim of this article is to present a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis - fsQCA) as a methodological concept to evaluate the processes involving knowledge related to the rural development. Selected municipalities, where activities for local development are carried out in everyday work, were a case study. The analysis focuses on the process of knowledge transfer. Transfer is most complex of all processes involving knowledge. It contains several important elements that form a strong foundation for the organization efficiency, namely: knowledge acquisition, knowledge sharing, dissemination of knowledge and knowledge sharing. On the effectiveness of this process depends largely the level of economic development of the area i.a: update information, faster decision-making, use the different external sources to finance various projects, innovative solutions implementation to acquire competitiveness of the area.

Opis:
Nowadays, SMEs operate in an increasingly competitive environment, full of threats from competing companies. One of the big challenges facing small and medium enterprises is human resource management. People spend most of their hours at work, and job satisfaction plays a vital role in an efficient work environment. Employee job satisfaction is a very complex construct, and is considered a critical factor in the organization's success. The purpose of this article is to examine how various, selected factors, such as: identification with the strategy, leadership style, job security and awards, simultaneously affect employee job satisfaction in Polish small and medium-sized enterprises. The sample of the study includes employees of Polish small and medium enterprises. Based on data from 274 surveys with Polish small and medium sized enterprises’ employees, fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis was used to investigate several combination of conditions affecting job satisfaction. The results presented in the article confirm that a high level of job satisfaction can be achieved through many constellations of conditions. Small and medium-sized enterprises can adopt in practice these specific factors in several constellations to obtain a higher level of employee job satisfaction.

In this study the impact of selected organizational characteristics on R&D projects performance were analyzed. The data for the empirical analysis come from a survey of 131 R&D projects across 53 high-tech business units. This study employs a configurational approach, using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fs/QCA), to analyze the combination of structural differentiation, innovation strategy, cooperation with stakeholders, and project team autonomy with the performance of R&D projects. The results suggest that no single organizational characteristic is crucial to ensure the success of R&D projects but three causality paths lead to that outcome. Because of significant interdependencies, the main organizational characteristic contributing to the success of R&D projects in the high-tech company concern innovation strategy in connection with either cooperation with stakeholders or project team autonomy or structural differentiation.

This study examines the different contextual factors (previous cooperative experiences, the partners’ reputation, attraction capacity, a clear definition of objectives, proximity between partners and institutionalization) that, according to the literature, affect the performance of science-industry R&D partnerships. These factors are the preconditions of the contract that are the reference framework in which future relations between the partners are planned. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these factors and to present a causal model to explain how these contextual factors lead to the success of science-industry R&D cooperation. The analysis uses fs/QCA methodology, which allows identifying a combination of causes that lead to the outcome. Results support the argument that different causal paths (combinations of contextual factors) explain profitable R&D contracts.

This paper focuses on evaluating airline service quality from the perspective of passengers' view. Until now a lot of researches has been performed in airline service quality evaluation in the world but a little research has been conducted in Iran, yet. In this study, a framework for measuring airline service quality in Iran is proposed. After reviewing airline service quality criteria, SSQAI model was selected because of its comprehensiveness in covering airline service quality dimensions. SSQAI questionnaire items were redesigned to adopt with Iranian airlines requirements and environmental circumstances in the Iran's economic and cultural context. This study includes fuzzy decision-making theory, considering the possible fuzzy subjective judgment of the evaluators during airline service quality evaluation. Fuzzy TOPSIS have been applied for ranking airlines service quality performances. Three major Iranian airlines which have the most passenger transfer volumes in domestic and foreign flights were chosen for evaluation in this research. Results demonstrated Mahan airline has got the best service quality performance rank in gaining passengers' satisfaction with delivery of high-quality services to its passengers, among the three major Iranian airlines. IranAir and Aseman airlines placed in the second and third rank, respectively, according to passenger's evaluation. Statistical analysis has been used in analyzing passenger responses. Due to the abnormality of data, Non-parametric tests were applied. To demonstrate airline ranks in every criterion separately, Friedman test was performed. Variance analysis and Tukey test were applied to study the influence of increasing in age and educational level of passengers on degree of their satisfaction from airline's service quality. Results showed that age has no significant relation to passenger satisfaction of airlines, however, increasing in educational level demonstrated a negative impact on passengers' satisfaction with airline's service quality.

The paper proposes a methodology for fuzzy multi-criteria analysis of decisions in a raster-based geographical information system (GIS) to determine the optimal locations for territorial objects. Recommendations about the stages of choosing alternatives for spatial and non-spatial constraints are given. It is shown that the fuzzyfication of criteria, that is, the conversion of their attribute values into a fuzzy set, based on expert evaluation of a fuzzy membership function, allows screening alternatives by determining thresholds of alpha-cut of fuzzy sets for each criterion, followed by combining criteria attributes using aggregation operators: minimum, maximum, weighted sum, OWA operator Jager. Adding to the procedure of multicriteria analysis of the additional stage of filtration of alternatives gives the opportunity to reduce the number of alternatives, and in the future and the processing time of the criteria layers by aggregator operators. The proposed algorithm for screening alternatives can be performed in a GIS environment using Fuzzy Membership, Overlay and raster calculators tools.

The paper presents construction of the fuzzy logic system to analog circuits parametric fault diagnosis. The classical dictionary construction is replaced by fuzzy rule system. The first part refers to analog fault diagnosis, its techniques, approaches and goals. It clarifies common strategy and define differences between detecting, locating and identifying a fault in analog electronic circuit. The second part is focused on a creation of fuzzy rule expert system with use of sensitivity functions and known circuit topology. To detect, locate and identify a faulty element in a circuit the sensitivity matrix is used. The advantage of the method is its utilization in all, AC, DC and time domain. The fuzzy system, like the classical fault dictionary, can detect and locate single catastrophic faults and, on the contrary to the classical one, it also detects and locates parametric faults. Moreover, it allows identification of these faults, such that sign of the faulty parameter deviation is designated. The method has deterministic character as well as it can be applied on the verification and production stage.
