Opis:
The aim of the article is to define the concept of economic freedom, using the ideas of the most important representatives of this doctrine. The article refers to the chronology and development of the concept of economic freedom, as well as the evolution of the policy of economic freedom along with the specification of the legal foundations determining the status of economic freedom over the centuries. The author refers only to the most important concepts for the issue in question, focusing on: (1) issues related to economic law and economic freedom or (2) aspects relevant to it in a given period. The initial thesis of the research is that economic freedom policy is a dynamic area, as evidenced by the multitude of legal acts implemented or amended every few years. Where specific legal phenomena are studied and need to be qualified at the same time, reference has been made primarily to the existing stock of well-known institutions. Economic freedom is a topic that has been the subject of lively discussion for many years. At its core, at various times, there were difficulties in determining (defining) economic freedom and its position in a given state. The political transformations lasting hundreds of years have caused economic changes in the state, accompanied by legal problems. The issue of economic freedom is related to the formation of relations between various entities operating on the territory of the state, and especially to how the state as an institution relates to entrepreneurs. Economic freedom has a significant impact on modern states, often leading to a change in their organizational model. For this reason, questions arise: What is economic freedom? What was its evolution? What is the attitude of the state to economic freedom? To what extent is economic freedom de facto “freedom” and what does it mean?

Opis:
The freedom, in Latin libertas, is the object of philosophical reflection since Plato. Yet as the determined philosophical direction it took the form of the „liberalism” on the turning point of the sixteenth and seventeenth century, represented by two philosophers: Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778). Among contemporary scholars Isaiah Berlin is standing out. From his point of view the philosophical problem of the freedom should be examined in two aspects: the negative freedom i.e. the attribute of not hindered freedom in making choices and the positive freedom as opportunity of being the master of one’s own fate. The author of the article, after critical demonstrating the conception of liberalism, sketches the theory of freedom from the position of Christian ethics. As a starting point he takes the conception of man as a person whose rational activities take on the form of twofold freedom of choice. In the psychological aspect, this freedom assumes the ambivalent form of doing good or evil, however in the moral aspect it turns out to be freedom put in order by the hierarchy of objective moral values. In this meaning the freedom also organizes the whole free man's activity and becomes creative strength of his moral personal perfection. It also defines the crucial sense of Christian philosophical science of truth about freedom.

The author relying on the limits of the allowed journalist criticism, normatively outlined and earned by the judicature and doctrine, considers the issue of applying the limits to judges. It is also indicated that protecting judges from unjustified criticism is necessary and the range of this protection should be wider than the range specified by the legislator in relation to politics and people holding social functions.

The cointegration analysis between series was conducted by means of Kao (1999) and Pedroni (2004) test. The analyses showed that political stability and trade freedom have a significant positive coefficient on the Fragile Five Countries’ FDI. It was also determined that the impact of economic freedom on FDI was statistically insignificant. Thus, it was concluded that the most important determinant of FDI entry into countries is political stability. Error correction mechanisms of models have been working well. In addition, it was found that political stability, economic freedom, and trade freedom are the cause of foreign direct investment in the long-run

When referring to “freedom of expression”, the editorials of the major Chilean newspapers focus exclusively on the limitations imposed on the mass media by the State. Hence they see the concept of freedom of expression only in terms of its negative dimension (i.e. as freedom from interference). In bellicose tones the editorials narrate the story of the struggle for the “magical object”, that is freedom of expression, in fact reduced to a minimal concept of press freedom, which is to say freedom for the established media outlets. In the structure of this discourse there are certain countries that are painted as the “villains” (essentially those that have an active media policy) while the private media play the role of “victims”, and international organisations (including the Inter-American Press Association that represents media owners) are painted as the “heroes”. Citizens and civil society are mentioned only sporadically and it is assumed that their interests are identical to those of the mainstream media. There are numerous structural absences in this discourse (i.e. issues that are important precisely because they are never mentioned). These include the extremely concentrated structure of media ownership in Chile, together with other limits on freedom of expression imposed by the market, and the topic of active cooperation of the main Chilean newspapers with the Pinochet dictatorship.

For the first time, Karl Loewenstein had used the category of militant democracy concerning the Weimar Republic. Although the world’s situation has changed, the process of political systems taking over non-democratic regimes’ characteristics is still visible. Among the indicators that can testify to becoming militant democracy, the restriction of freedom of the press is distinguished. This article attempts to analyze the dynamics of this process in Lithuania based on the Freedom House reports. The research question formulated is: What restrictions on the press’s freedom in Lithuania occurred in the period? The hypothesis is: In 2008-2019 in Lithuania, there has been a regular restriction on the freedom of the press, which may indicate a progressive process of militant democracy. Results: The hypothesis has been partially verified positively. During the period considered, there were regular restrictions on the freedom of the press but were justified mainly by circumstances, or immediate counter-action was taken.

The author of the article struggles with a paradox: the post-modern age which views itself as pluralistic nonetheless appears to yearn for upbringing. At the beginning of XXI century, the dissonance between human development, full participation in a wide range of spiritual culture and a tendency to strictly technical education, oriented mainly on efficiency and profits appears in a full range. In this context it is important to educate young people in the responsible use of the gift of freedom. The author of this article presents freedom as a characteristic sign of youth education in the present century. He also shows the pluralism of values and upbringing aimed towards freedom. The author also underlines the Christian approach to freedom, understood as both a gift and a task received from God. Pedagogy of freedom is not a question of transmitting human knowledge, even of the highest kind; it is rather a question of responsibly communicating with God and people. God Himself used a pedagogy that must continue to be a model for the pedagogy of freedom.

First of all, it seems appropriate to distinguish between the two freedoms: that of the thought and the speech. For the purposes of the current analysis, I would suggest that the following definitions of these two types of freedoms are adopted: the freedom of speech is an unencumbered right to express one’s views on a public forum, whereas the freedom of thought is an unencumbered right to hold such views. The term “views” shall encompass all kinds of judgments, assessments and standards, etc. Both of these freedoms are regularly treated together (when considered under the common slogan of “freedom of speech and conscience”). This approach, however, does not always seem to be right, since the scope of and the type of interaction between the freedom of speech and the freedom of thought turns out to be much more complex than it is generally believed.

The freedom of media can be understood in different ways. One can speak of the freedom of media as an institution, connoting that there is an absence of any dependence of media on the legal and economic pressures. Secondly, the freedom of media can be understood as belonging to individual entities participating in media as such, their relationships and dependencies, and above all, the scope of their respective independence. Thirdly, the freedom of media can be understood as a rejection of any restrictions of ideological, philosophical, religious or moral character. In the last case, the discussion about the freedom of media is closely associated with the general, philosophical discussion about the limits and criteria of freedoms. Fourthly and finally, the freedom of media can be discussed in the context of various risks that the abuse of this freedom might create not only for an individual, but also for the society. In this article, I am going to discuss the freedom of media as it is understood under the last three definitions given above.

This paper sets out to outline the singular nature of the dimension of anthropology of freedom in the philosophies of Jean-Paul Sartre and Emmanuel Lévinas, the leading existentialists of the 20th century. It seems that the phenomenon of human freedom, one of the fundamental issues in philosophical anthropology, in particular in the humanist reflection, proves to be problematic when one seeks to elucidate it without ambiguity. This becomes even more difficult given that it prompts further momentous intellectual quandaries, mostly those concerned with the nature of the meaning of existence itself. The concepts advanced by Sartre and Lévinas – although they represent different visions of the human – undoubtedly provide much philosophical inspirationfor all kinds of reflection on the vital issue of freedom.

The liberty or the absence of the liberated. This notion was thought as an alternative between two choices. Kierkegaard or “Give me liberty, or give me death!” By Patrick Henry (the first governor of Virginia during the American War of Independence) Serve as typical examples of this way of thinking. For the people, subjected to the oppression of the despotic feudal system of the Middle Ages, the establishment of a modern society was the glorification of a form of liberty. By the revolution that led to the independence and creation of the United States of America and also by the French Revolution, the people obtained freedom symbolized by the slogan of the French Revolution: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. The United States, a country that was built on these values, is now a dominant economic and military superpower. From this point of view, having completed the values of the French Revolution in its societies, the West (Europe and the United States) seems to have brought together ideal democracies. This, however, only holds true when we compare with countries suffering from poverty, oppression, tyranny or fascism. Because a nation is the gathering of men and no man is perfect, it is difficult to find an ideal country. Thus J.J. Rousseau, the ideologist and sympathizer of the French revolution, expresses it in his work “Du Contrat Social”: ... To take the term in the strict sense, there has never existed a true democracy, and it will never exist.

The author takes up the question of the freedom in the moral and sociopolitical context. She distinguishes, besides the freedom “from” and “to”, the outside freedom and the inner freedom. The first is to determine by conditions in which the man is functioning. The second has basis in human psyche. Political system, including the democracy, should guarantee the outside freedom. The sphere of the inner freedom, in which among others the morality is realizing, cannot be limited or imposed by the state and its the laws. Democracy, which the law is a product of the majority not always of conscious people, not enough protect the outside freedom, as well as is often a threat for the inner freedom.

Dokumentami prawnymi poddanymi analizie były przede wszystkim unormowania konstytucyjne i ustawa z 1989 roku o gwarancjach wolności sumienia i wyznania, która uszczegółowia materię wyznaniową, dookreślając ją i konkretyzując.
The subject of this article is an analysis of Polish origins of law on freedom of religion. An author begins his article by saying that the first and most important legal document, which breaks through in protection of the freedom to profess the Christian religion, was the Edict of Milan of 313 of emperor Constantine. Historical analysis for the protection of freedom of religion was carried further, by the author, through the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment to modern times. Legal documents that were analysed were mostly the constitutional norms and the Law on the guarantees of freedom of conscience and confession of 1989, which describes in detail the religious matter, determining and specifying it.

In Poland, the way to make the constitutional basis of freedom of speech and freedom of the media opened up with breakthrough systemic taking place in 1989. Today it is sanctioned under the Constitution of 1997 (article 14 expresses the freedom of media and article 54 regulates freedom of expression) and a matter of law on the National Council of Radio and Television. The need for free media market, free flow of information and opinions and the need to protect it with a functioning system of judicial instruments – domestic and international – is now the standard functioning of democratic states. If what is more free speech – mainly implemented by means of mass communication is a real value and perform proper function in society – the mass media must be able to operate without restrictions or influence by external actors. Only then they will be able to inform the public about the socio-political events in the most objective way. Everyone has the right to express their thoughts, whether in private life, whether in public life. In addition, each sentence of the people must be respected, even if someone disagrees with him. This rule is reflected not only in Polish law (both in terms of the Constitution and ordinary laws) but also in the program documents, demands and actions of all major Polish political scene at the party. On the basis of the current legal regulations, political parties have the ability to access public radio and television, which have an impact on the implementation of the constitutional right of freedom of expression in practice. For this example, an object of study focused on two levels of analysis, in relation to the p arliamentary elections of 2011 and in the context of political ideology. Opis:
Freedom from fear is one of the four freedoms (along with freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want) that President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented first to the US Congress on 6 January 1941, and later to the entire world in the fight against Germany, Italy and Japan. They covered all areas of human life, guaranteeing security in the private and family spheres, in public life and in relations with other people and, above all, with any authority (especially the State). These freedoms became the basis of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, proclaimed on 10 December 1948, and other national and international documents. Freedom from fear has become a symbol of the protection of human rights and a guarantee of a safe life for every person everywhere in the world. The vast majority of conflicts in the world originate within national borders and their main victims are innocent civilians. States have a primary duty to protect everyone. They must create strong security instruments to prevent a repetition of the crimes of the Second World War. The quest for universal and individual security is constantly intertwined with new threats that grow with the development of civilisation, in particular through the evolution of technology and information. Today, we are also confronted with various aggressors - bandit states, cruel terrorists and populist governments on the verge of enslavement and incitement to violence. Education, cooperation, human rights and shared responsibility for others build respect for every human being - not only fellow citizens, but other people from distant parts of the global village. This shared responsibility began in the Congress of the United States of America on 6 January 1941.

Opis:
„Wolność twórczości” należy do pojęć intuicyjnych, wymykających się próbom definiowania. Dlatego autor proponuje rezygnację stworzenia definicji „wolności twórczej” na gruncie nauk prawnych. Wskazuje natomiast konstytutywne cechy aktywności twórczej człowieka. Są nimi: „nowość” i „energia umysłowa” zużyta na stworzenie nowego przedmiotu niematerialnego. Autor wskazuje także cechy charakteryzujące człowieka twórczego. O wolności można mówić w kontekście aktywności artystycznej i pozaartystycznej człowieka.  Wolność twórczości nie jest nieograniczona. W praktyce istnieją granice pozaprawne i granice wyznaczone w normach prawnych. Te ostatnie zostały wyznaczone głównie w Konstytucji RP, prawie autorskim, prawie własności przemysłowej, kodeksie cywilnym i kodeksie karnym.
“Creative freedom” belongs to intuitive notions, beyond the attempts to define. Therefore, the author proposes to give up the creation of definition for “creative freedom” within the law . However, he points out constitutive features of human creative activity. They are: “newness” and “mental energy” used for the creation of a new immaterial object. The author indicates the features characterising a creative man also. It is possible to speak about the freedom in the context of human artistic and out of artistic activity. Creative freedom is unlimited .In practice there are the boundaries extralegal and the boundaries defined by the legal norms. The latter were drawn mainly in the RP Constitution, in the copyright law, industrial property law, civil code and penal code.

The essential problem of the present article can be reduced to an attempt to find the answers to three questions: What is freedom in its essence? What is the connection between freedom and education? How can we enable a man to properly develop freedom and to useit? The analysis undertaken in the article besides the answers to the above questions shows theoretical foundations of education for freedom. It also allows the reader to acquaint himself with selected ways of understanding freedom (St. John Chrysostom's; J. J. Rousseau's; R. Steiner's; J. Maritain's; J. Salij's; S. Hessen's; S. Szuman's and A. Neill's) with special emphasis on the views of two thinkers: the ancient philosopher Epictetus (born in 50 A.D) and the founder of the Comunione e Liberazione movement, Luigi Giussani (died on 22 February 2005).

Reflection on human freedom will remain a constant motive for reflection in moral theology. Without freedom, there is no human act, so there is no morality in the strict sense of the term “freedom”. That is why it is worth returning to the issue of freedom, but taking into account new ways of understanding it. Freedom will remain a current problem in the struggle of man for good, especially in social life. For Christian thought on this subject, the encyclical of John Paul II Veritatis splendor will remain relevant – read it again.

The focus of this article is to examine the notion of freedom, and more precisely freedom of speech, in the light of The People vs. Larry Flynt. The analysis will pay close attention to what has always been a central concern of American society constituting one of the basic principles on which the new nation was founded. What is more, the article will try to indicate that freedom of speech has been as essential as controversial in many respects, which is proven by numerous examples from American history. As a baseline of this study I have chosen Larry Flynt, whose life and legal battles form the central theme of the selected biopic. The article will scrutinize the plot of the movie, as it provides interesting insights into the life of this controversial advocate of freedom of speech. Flynt made himself well-known, if not notorious, by being the focal point of countless debates that concerned moral issues, public taste, and two basic rights guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence and the First Amendment. Ultimately, the article will try to challenge the concept of a society based on the notion of freedom of speech by asking and trying to answer three questions: What precisely is freedom of speech? Is freedom of speech absolute? Are there any limits of expression and if so, then where to draw the line?

Wiele z tych zjawisk zna Biblia. Dlatego warto nieustannie odczytywać jej przesłanie, by także w niej szukać odpowiedzi na współczesne tendencje: poszukiwania wolności i ucieczki przed nią.
The Christian concept of freedom, based on Revelation, remains unchanged. Next to it, however, there are other visions and various proposals of realizing it in life and in action. Therefore, the biblical message of freedom must be read in a constantly new, changing context. Today, this context is marked by such phenomena as: the demand an absolute autonomy, detachment of freedom from truth and goodness, from God, who in fact is its source − on the one hand, and determinism − on the other. The Bible knows many of these phenomena. Therefore, it is worthwhile to read its message continually, in order to look for answers to contemporary trends: the search for freedom and the escape from it.

Throughout history, mankind has been inclined to use an increasingly advanced technology to enhance communication skills between them. Communication already represents a need as essential as it is considered one of the funda-mental human rights. This right of communication today translates, among others, as the right to freedom of expression, as well as the right to infor-mation. These rights are provided in the highest acts such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, the Constitution of the Republic of Albania as well as other laws or bylaws issued on the basis and implementation of the Constitution. The human right to express oneself, to be informed and at the same time to preserve privacy, is developing along with the great boom that has taken place in the development of communication technology, in an increasingly connected world, so much so that to look like a global village, where information spreads very quickly. The evolution that has taken place with the development of information technology and related digital communications in recent years has changed the communication practices around the world. But in addition to this, the legislation that regulates this field has undergone constant changes, due to the fact of direct implication for human rights.

Opis:
One of the main themes in the 20th century disagreements about man is the question of freedom, which seems to be the most complicated and, at the same time, intriguing phenomenon in the characteristics of the human subject. Karol Wojtyła suggests positioning freedom not only in the horizon of the irreducibility of the person as a subject, who autonomously decides about self and gives direction to own activities, but also in the area of interpersonal community. Being a person as a free subject appears as “in relation to” or “referring to” (something, somebody). We respond to values by making choices. The world of values is extremely rich and varied. It also encompasses other people, who are in relation to one another. Therefore, to be a person means more than just to be for oneself, in oneself and by oneself. To be a person is to be in relation to other people and to values. The community-oriented character of freedom is focused on in the philosophical writings by Karol Wojtyła, who on numerous occasions emphasizes the fact that a person may reach fulfilment through another human being, in a community with others, without losing anything of own subjectivity or individuality. Wojtyła wishes to deal with the problem of one of the fundamental conditions upon the fulfilment of which the community I-You may become a reality of subjects fulfilment. In order to achieve this purpose, Wojtyła undertakes analyses of participation, solidarity, community, whose proper specification in the perception of freedom aims at emphasizing the sense of man’s existence together with other human beings, on the one hand, and the purpose of man’s earthly journey, on the other hand.

The paper from 1981 on the social functions of “Solidarity” is re-published and commented from the 2006 perspective. In the original paper five pairs of the opposed functions were discussed: 1) activation vs. totalisation; 2) unification vs. polarization; 3) civilization of the opponent vs. demystification of the opponent; 4) non-egalitarian egalitarianisation; and 5) institutionalization of the change. In 2006 the author observes the continuing social function of the “Solidarity,” again the conflicting way, as the positive myth that more and more serves as normative reference in current political debates, and as the real political actor that compromised itself through the active participation in politics. The significance of the old functions is discussed in reference to the complexity of non-egalitarian egalitarianism that seems to undermine the whole transformation since 1989 and went to the fore today. The value of the “dialectical functionalism” is thus reasserted.

The issue of freedom in every human generation is a priority, there is no man who would not think about it. The combination of understanding one’s freedom is always associated with the personality of a human being, and the fear of enslavement is a fundamental problem of human existence. Personality of human beings change at different stages of their life, so I decided to find out how freedom develops depending on the age and the situation of a certain limit of freedom by institutional factors. I have also followed how the public can help people with personality issues, where the age of society is of great importance in understanding another human being. The adult part of our society is not ready to help and they are quickly writing off the human being with problems. This is not good for people who have undergone a resocialization process, because “you are derived from the society, you should go back there”. I invite you to read the text, based on my own research of certain social groups.

The subject of the present study is help; the foremost ontological condition of its realization (besides intellectual disposition, ethical qualifications, love and others) is responsibility, which constitutes a person’s humanity and thereby makes a unique contribution to the formation of his/her inner structure. Through responsible help we can perform genuine acts of mercy towards our neighbour and carry a small part of his/ her personal fate. The aim of the study is to refine the concept of responsible help and to indicate its several modes in the formation of a person’s humanity. The essence of responsible help is investigated; it presupposes rationality of action, prudence in doing good, and freedom as the fundamental condition of conscious response to values. The refinement of the concept of responsible help is based on the analyses of the virtues of munificence and magnanimity (Aristotle and St Thomas Aquinas) and generosity (J.Tischner). Despite their complex nature, these virtues are definable through an analysis of instances of appropriate help to others.

Opis:
In its analysis of human freedom, Józef Tischner’s philosophy poses fundamental questions about the essence of freedom, but also about the sense of preservation of freedom in one’s life. Freedom appears as a primary phenomenon, something that is part and parcel of human nature. Freedom as a structural element of human existence manifests itself perhaps most clearly in the sphere of human relations, which, immersed as they are in the eternal drama of good and evil, are played out in the space between salvation and damnation. The binary character of values, best seen in our use of freedom, keeps us for ever mindful of that unavoidable drama a man has to face, owing to his freedom, need not be helpless.Using such categories as election, space and health of the soul in his Rekolekcje Paryskie, Tischner approaches the definition of freedom through a succession of essential modifications which articulate some fundamental points concerning relations between people and man’s relations with God from an anthropological, axiological, ethical, social and theological perspective. Tischner proposes no definitive interpretation of freedom but, viewing the controversy over freedom as one of the most difficult problems in the philosophy of man, he tries to show what man’s inner freedom consists in and what achievements it makes man capable of.

Special sections are devoted to interrelations between responsibility and freedom, especially in the developmental aspect, and responsibility for another person.

The rapidly changing world does not provide a man with a sense of stability; he intensifies confusion in fundamental matters related to everyday life. Evolving in directions that are difficult to predict, this is not conducive to the process of maturing into a responsible experience of humanity. Various “religious” organizations and societies take advantage of this situation, putting confusion in order (usually in an apparent way), thereby obtaining new adherents for their vision of a better world. Being under the influence of charismatic leaders, the members of new religious movements change their behaviour diametrically, as well as their way of thinking about themselves and the world. Any former model of life is replaced by a new, i.e., collective, model of thinking, estimating and behaving. Important things lose their value. The hitherto prevailing existence, perceived as “bad”, “unenlightened”, “materialistic” or “not soulful”, is left for a new and “better” life, for purposes that are attainable only thanks to contact with the new group. The acquisition of self-identity and identification with the group requires considerable effort. Going over from one world to another brings with it numerous consequences of a psychological and social nature. Hence an immense complexity of factors forming the identity of a religious man appear. On the one hand, this is influenced by personality factors, the level of inner integration, psychical and emotional maturity, and on the other hand – a number of social conditions, i.e., the specificity of the cult group, its structure, doctrine, history and social relations. All the above makes it impossible to create a universal model of the follower’s identity within cult groups. It is only possible to indicate the conditions for the creation of the new individual, self leading to a manifestation of their participation within a definite cultic group.

Opis:
Freedom is a gift, but also a task. It is a value that binds a man to make intelligent choices in truth and love, respecting the dignity of a person. If a man uses freedom in a wrong way, cultivating their own desires, it comes to enslavement, and finally to the mutilation of humanity, which is the consequence of bad decisions and tragic choices. The first part of this article contains some terms of freedom, and then a problem of positive and negative freedom was shown. The highlight of these analyses is the presentation of selected contemporary forms of enslavement of the young man such as addictions, media, materialism or consumerism.

Opis:
This article critically analyses European jurisprudence to ascertain the extent to which the right to freedom of religion has been interpreted as a right of religion to internal autonomy. It asserts that women are being denied an effective right to freedom of religion insofar as they are unable to directly influence the content or structure of their religion. It argues that to fulfil women's equal right to freedom of religion, women's power and position within religion must be equivalent to men's. It therefore asserts that an intrinsic part of States' obligation to secure the right to freedom of religion is the facilitation of gender equality within religion. The article culminates by proposing proportionate and appropriate methods to facilitate gender equality within religion.

Studies investigating compliance-gaining procedures have shown that the feeling that someone is free to comply or not with a request is a requirement to obtain compliance. In this study, participants were asked for money for a charitable organization. In the experimental condition, people first heard a sentence saying that they would probably refuse to help, and then they were asked to make a donation. In the control condition, participants were just asked for money. Findings showed that more participants complied with the request in the experimental condition. Reactance theory was used to explain these results.

The main issue related to social rehabilitation is its effectiveness. Is it possible to bridge the gulf that exists between a prisoner in custody and people who enjoy freedom? Are they alike? Or are they so very much different that social rehabilitation is impossible? There is a whole array of questions and answers. Most opinions hold that social rehabilitation is not possible. The author of the article suggests that a positive answer to these questions will only be possible when we reach for the concept of man and discover the truth that inmates and people outside corrective institutions are exactly the same. Thus our elementary task is to discover the truth about the excluded as well as to help the excluded discover the same truth. This discovery is attained through learning, i.e. education.

The aim of this article is to provide an introduction into the ethics of values developed by Józef Tischner. In his analyses, the philosopher from Cracow departs from the ethics of norms and presents the reality of choices as a way of realizing values. In the encounter with the Other, a drama takes place – one that reveals the truth about the human condition. An indispensable element of this drama is freedom, which, although it may be the cause of mistakes, is, above all, a way of the existence of good and a condition of personal growth.

Opis:
A direct inspiration to write this text was a question asked to participants of the International Conference organized by EBEN Poland in 2014: do we still believe in the free market? Reflection on the question of the current market freedom has made the author re-examine the nature of economic freedom, particularly compared with its philosophical understanding. The result of this analysis could be shortly presented in the form of a following thesis: separation of economic freedom understanding from its philosophical roots, and over-use of this idea in the economic space by means of economic individualism, has led to a paradoxical situation in which the market becomes – mainly in the corporate environment – less and less free, while development of economy based on the growth of corporate power threatens the freedom of man as an employee, customer and citizen alike.

Opis:
The article attempts to compare the idea of freedom presented in the diary entitled Drawingpen Sketches, written by Andrzej Bobkowski in France during World War II, with the diary (Diary) written by Witold Gombrowicz during his emigration between 1953 and 1969. First, the author discusses the sorts of intellectual subjugations that permeate the Polish culture, and which are frequently discussed by the two diaritsts: e.g. the myth of Romantic Poland or the conflict between Western episteme and Eastern dokse. Next, the author analyses Bobkowski's and Gombrowicz's ideas of freedom. The author presents Bobkowski's idea of freedom as expressed in negative terms („freedom from”). On the other hand, Gombrowicz's idea of freedom is qualified as positive freedom („freedom to”).

The subject of this article is the analysis of selected institutional activities, including drafts of legislative initiatives and social actions that took place between 2018 and 2020 at Polish universities (and outside of them). Its goal is to define what can be expressed, who is entitled to speak within the academic realm and what can be said by an academic teacher or scientist during a public debate. These social actions and legislative initiatives are discussed in the broader context of activities of social movements having a clear ideological face (either left- or right-wing), protests against lectures, debates organised at universities that were labelled as “ideological”, as well as projects intended to promote specific visions of academic freedom along with corresponding regulations for universities.

The purpose of the article was the analysis of two topics: the freedom and new society in Steiner’s philosophy. Steiner in The Philosophy of Freedom postulates that the world is essentially an indivisible unity. He suggests, that freedom can only be approached gradually with the aid of the creative activity of thinking. The ability to think and act independently is a possibility for modern consciousness. The process of free action also includes the liberation from given (unreflected) natural driver, instincts and the commands of reason or authorities. The free action, are those for which we are fully conscious of the motive. He concludes, that freedom is the spiritual activity of penetrating with consciousness our own nature. The most striking feature of Anthroposophy will be deemed, at first sight, to be the cultivation of the soul’s inward life and the opening of the eyes to a spiritual world. But these doctrines are the foes of real life. The best situation would result if one would give people free way. He has the trust that they would find their direction themselves.

Opis:
The article examines the process of shaping of the Polish patriotic discourse, which was determined by such events of the 18th century as the Bar Confederation, the Great Sejm proceedings, and the Kościuszko Uprising. In a situation in which Poland was threatened with the invasion of surrounding world powers and in the face of impending armed struggle for sovereignty, the then most important values uniting the Polish nation were formulated. The first entity to define them were the Bar confederates, who fought against the Russian army in defence of their fatherland, religion, freedom, and independence. In the 1790s the patriotic discourse shifted to the press covering the proceedings of the Great Sejm, and later to newspaper coverage of the Kościuszko Uprising. During these events, the freedom demands were altered because the conservative Sarmatian republicanism had been replaced with ‚new’ republicanism – characterised by social radicalism and supporting the separation of church and state. Despite some semantic shifts, for more than 200 years the most significant values constituting the Polish patriotic discourse have been: fatherland, freedom, and independence.
