Opis:
The current knowledge on the occurrence of Lobaria amplissima, a very rare old-growth forest lichen in Poland, is discussed. Both previous and new localities are presented. The Białowieża Forest, from which L. amplissima is reported, is a refuge site of L. amplissima in the lowland forests of Central Europe. The most important data on the ecology and the general distribution of the species are given. Diagnostic characters related to the morphology, anatomy and chemistry of L. amplissima differentiating it from similar species are described.
Pierwsze stanowisko L. amplissima w Polsce podali Kukwa i in. (2008) w wyniku rewizji okazu zdeponowanego w BSG, zebranego w Puszczy Białowieskiej i znanego wcześniej jako L. virens (Cieśliński i Tobolewski 1988; Cieśliński 2003, 2010). Kolejne stanowiska L. amplissima zostały ostatnio znalezione przez A. Bohdana, w wilgotnych lasach olszowych w obrębie kilku części rezerwatu „Lasy Naturalne Puszczy Białowieskiej” i Białowieskiego Parku Narodowego. Wszystkie notowania pochodzą z kory przewróconych starych jesionów. Plechy zlokalizowane były w podkoronowej części pni i w koronie. Najbardziej prawdopodobnymi forofitami mogą być jesiony w łęgach i olsach, jesiony i dęby w wilgotnych postaciach grądów, buki i jawory w zbiorowiskach leśnych w górach. Najbardziej istotne cechy diagnostyczne omawianego gatunku to jasnoszara (w stanie suchym) górna powierzchnia plechy (wilgotna – szaro-zielona), z wyraźnymi marszczeniami w części środkowej i drobne, do 2 cm szerokości, karbowano-wcinane, częściowo podwinięte łatki. Plechy zawierają skrobikulinę, rzadziej pseudocyfellarynę i atranorynę.

Opis:
During the survey of the Mały Borek nature reserve (Augustów Forest, NE Poland) 236 species of vascular plants were recorded, including 10 plant species red-listed in Poland and 19 species protected under the Polish law. The most valuable species were sedges typical of the boreal coniferous forests: Carex vaginata, C. globularis and C. loliacea. The presence of neophytes was very limited (1,3% of the flora) in the area studied. The principal aim of the establishment of the reserve was the conservation of old-growth coniferous forests with long ecological continuity. Since the reserve studied consists mainly of old-growth coniferous forests, the number of species regarded as ancient forest indicators is lower (54 species) than in the well-preserved reserves with deciduous stands in north-east Poland, but still rather high. The most valuable, threatened species are bound to wetland forests that are presently disturbed due to drainage. Restoration of the former hydrological conditions is essential for the preservation of the vascular plants in the reserve.

During the period from 2003 to 2011 observations of carabid community regression and selected habitat indicators were conducted on 15 plots in stands that had been disturbed by a hurricane and on 15 plots in control stands. Regression of carabid communities delayed 3−4 years was observed, consisting in increases in the number of species and the proportion of xerophilous species and reductions in the percentage of forest fauna and in mean individual biomass. Only after 7 years did these indicators begin to show a tendency in the reverse direction, albeit not very strong, indicating that carabid communities had begun to regenerate.

The flowering and graft mortality of Norway spruce clones of Istebna origin was only slightly different from clones of other origin in the same seed orchard. The negative effect ofmoving Istebna clones from the south to the north of their origin was probably compensated by moving them from a higher altitude to lowland. There is a danger that the complete loss of several clones, observed in the seed orchard with time, may really decrease the expected level of genetic variation in the progeny. It is recommended that the mortality of grafts and the reduction in the number of clones in the seed orchard should be under permanent observation.

Opis:
Height-diameter models define the general relationship between the tree height and diameter at each growth stage of the forest stand. This paper presents generalized height-diameter models for mixed-species forest stands consisting of Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.), Silver fir (Abies alba L.), and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) from Slovakia. The models were derived using two growth functions from the exponential family: the two-parameter Michailoff and three-parameter Korf functions. Generalized height-diameter functions must normally be constrained to pass through the mean stand diameter and height, and then the final growth model has only one or two parameters to be estimated. These “free” parameters are then expressed over the quadratic mean diameter, height and stand age and the final mathematical form of the model is obtained. The study material included 50 long-term experimental plots located in the Western Carpathians. The plots were established 40–50 years ago and have been repeatedly measured at 5 to 10-year intervals. The dataset includes 7,950 height measurements of spruce, 21,661 of fir and 5,794 of beech. As many as 9 regression models were derived for each species. Although the “goodness of fit” of all models showed that they were generally well suited for the data, the best results were obtained for silver fir. The coefficient of determination ranged from 0.946 to 0.948, RMSE (m) was in the interval 1.94–1.97 and the bias (m) was –0.031 to 0.063. Although slightly imprecise parameter estimation was established for spruce, the estimations of the regression parameters obtained for beech were quite less precise. The coefficient of determination for beech was 0.854–0.860, RMSE (m) 2.67–2.72, and the bias (m) ranged from –0.144 to –0.056. The majority of models using Korf’s formula produced slightly better estimations than Michailoff’s, and it proved immaterial which estimated parameter was fixed and which parameters were free.

Opis:
Black alder, an N-fixing tree is considered to accelerate the availability of phosphorus in soils due to the increased production of phosphatase enzymes, which are responsible for the P release from the litter. Acid phosphatase activity plays a pivotal role in organic P mineralization in forest soils and in making P available to plants. In order to check whether Alnus glutinosa stimulates acid phosphomonoesterase (PHACID) activity, we compared enzyme activities, total P concentration (PTOT), plant-available P (PAVAIL), organic P (PORG) and inorganic P (PINORG), and organic matter content in 27 ancient and 27 post-agricultural alder woods (the latter ones representing different age classes: 11-20, 21-40 and 41-60 years) of soil samples taken from the litter and the mineral layers. Phosphomonoesterase activity, organic matter, PTOT, PINORG and PORG concentrations were significantly higher in ancient alder woods than in the soils of post-agricultural forests. Significant differences in the acid phosphatase activity, organic matter and PAVAIL concentration were noted between the litter and mineral layers within the same forest type. In recent stands the amount of organic matter and phosphatase activity increased significantly with the age of alder stands, although only in the mineral layer of their soils. Phosphomonoesterase activity, organic matter and PAVAIL content were higher in a litter layer and decreased significantly at a mineral depth of the soil. The acid phosphatase activity was significantly correlated with organic matter content in both ancient and recent stands. There was no significant relationship between PHACID activity and any P forms.

We studied the relationship between tree-species diversity and the above-ground biomass on an example of two natural Polish forest with different altitiudinal range, plant species pool, vegetation and climatic conditions. The study sought to determine whether: (1) above-ground biomass in natural forests correlates with tree-species diversity irrespective of the kind of forest (montane or lowland), and (2) the relationship in question is negative, (3) the above-ground biomass is greater in montane forests than in lowland ones. Natural forests present in 1º Polish Gorce Mountains (montane forest) alongside comparable data for the 2º world-renowned lowland forest that is present in the Białowieża National Park. Data were collected within 558 sample plots (á 200-square-metre). The diameter at breast height of all trees with girths of or exceeding 12 cm was measured. To compute above-ground biomass we calculated dry masses for each tree on the basis of values for dbh and height, next we summed these values for all species present within each plot. The number of tree species on a plot ranged from only one (mainly in spruce stands) to six (in mixed deciduous lowland forest stands). The above-ground accumulated biomass ranged from 6 to 1155 (average 251±13) t ha–1 within the lowland forest, and from 2 to 849 (average 242±8) t ha–1 within the montane forest. We concluded that there was a humped-back shaped relationship between tree-species diversity and above-ground biomass in both lowland and montane natural forests.

The effects of drought stress, stress by increased nitrogen depositions and the combined effect of the two stress factors on the growth of Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) Karst. were studied in two stands. The drought stress was induced by reducing atmospheric precipitations by 60% and the increased nitrogen depositions were simulated by repeated applications of ammonium sulphate at a rate corresponding to 100 kg N ha–1 year–1. All stress factors under study affected the height increment of the above-ground part, the length and colour of needles, and the biomass, vertical distribution, functionality and mycorrhizal infection of fine roots. The root system responded to the simulated stresses right from the the very first year of their action, exhibiting a greater damage than the above-ground part of the plant. Drought acted as a stress factor stronger than the nitrogen depositions themselves. The strongest impact was recorded in the simultaneous influence of the stress factors.

Opis:
The study aimed to investigate effectiveness of forest management zoning in conserving biodiversity of Mabira forest reserve. The study sites buffer, production, and strict nature reserve management zones were purposively selected. This was undertaken through investigating woody species diversity, composition and structure. A total of 60 sampling plots with a size of 20 m x10 m were used to collect vegetation data. Variables such as woody plant species identification and counts as well as diameter at breast height (DBH) of trees were done. The result depicted a total of 65 woody species; 39 in buffer, 19 in productions and 37 in strict nature reserve. Of these, only 9 trees species were found common to all zones and their Sorensen similarity coefficient was 0.2213. The population structure of the buffer and strict nature reserve zones was found to be a J - shape pattern, whereas the production zone shown an inverted J-shape pattern. Higher woody species diversity was depicted in the buffer and strict nature zones with (H’=2. 73512) and (H’=2. 68412) respectively, and lower in a production zone (H’=1. 63628). The evenness index value of a buffer zone was (J =0. 746574), strict nature (J= 0.743335) and production (J=0. 555719). The production zone had shown higher IVI values followed by buffer and strict nature reserve zone. The most important woody species identified based on their IVI value were Broussonetia papyrifera (Production), Acalypha neptunica (Buffer), Funtumia Elastica (strict nature reserve). The existing forest management is effective in conserving the biodiversity of the forest reserve. Nevertheless, the production zone was still suffering from exploitation of the surrounding community, hence serve for protecting the remaining management zones from further human interference. Further investigation is also required on the adjacent community perceptions of the forest management zoning.

Attempts to study biodiversity hotspots on a regional scale should combine compositional and functionalist criteria. The detection of hotspots in this study uses one ecologically similar group of high conservation value species as hotspot indicators, as well as focal habitat indicators, to detect the distribution of suitable environmental conditions. The method is assessed with reference to thermophilous forests in Poland – key habitats for many rare and relict species. Twenty-six high conservation priority species were used as hotspot indicators, and ten plant taxa characteristic of the Quercetalia pubescenti-petraeae phytosociological order were used as focal habitat indicators. Species distribution data was based on a 10 × 10 km grid. The number of species per grid square was interpolated by the ordinary kriging geostatistical method. Our analysis largely determined the distribution of areas with concentration of thermophilous forest flora, but also regional disjunctions and geographical barriers. Indicator species richness can be interpreted as a reflection of the actual state of habitat conditions. It can also be used to determine the location of potential species refugia and possible past and future migration routes.

This paper presents the results of the ornithological research performed in the oldest dry coniferous forests of Kampinos National Park (central Poland). The field study took place on three 25-ha-sites overgrown with Scots pine Pinus sylvestris over 150 years old. The species composition of the dominant group was found to differ from that of other forests. Hole-nesters constituted the most important part of the population of birds together with old and mature forest specialists and residents. Hole-nesters were numerously represented (50% of all noted pairs). Old and mature forest specialists constituted 40% of all pairs. Seven species connected to natural forest clearings were also found to be of significant importance. The presence of such ecological groups is proof of the biological balance and diversity of the researched forests.

This paper presents the results of a study of bird populations connected with the oldest forest stands of pine coniferous forests in Kampinoska Forest, where the pine trees are minimum 160 years old. It presents the basic results concerning the distribution, selectiveness and habitat preferences of hole-nesters and the birds connected with old forests in connection with habitat characteristics. The studied areas were dominated by hole-nesters, and a significant share was of birds connected with gaps left after broken trees. A large group was made up by birds which collect invertebrates among trees and then the species which feed on trunks and branches. Large dimensions of pine trees and numerous cracks in bark, cracks in trunks and hollows under windfallen tress served as microhabitats for particular bird species. The index of species diversity and number of pairs were similar in every area, probably due to dozens of years of forest protection, thanks to which similar quantity and quality parameters developed in the areas.

Opis:
Forest seed banks mostly studied in managed forests proved to be small, species poor and not reflecting aboveground species composition. Yet studies conducted in undisturbed communities indicate a different seed bank characteristic. Therefore we aimed at describing soil seed bank in an undisturbed forest in a remnant of European lowland temperate forests, the Białowieża Forest. We compared similarity between the herb layer and seed bank, similarity of seed bank between different patches, and dominance structure of species in the herb layer and in the seed bank of two related oak-hornbeam communities. We report relatively high values of Sorensen species similarity index between herb layer and seed bank of both patches. This suggests higher species similarity of the herb layer and soil seed bank in natural, unmanaged forests represented by both plots than in fragmented communities influenced by man. Although there was a set of core seed bank species present at both plots, yielding high Sorensen species similarity index values, considerable differences between plots in seed bank size and dominance structure of species were found, indicating spatial variability of studied seed bank generated by edaphic conditions. Dominance structure of species in the herb layer was not reflected in the underlying seed bank. This stresses, that natural forest regeneration cannot rely only on the seed bank, although some forest species are capable of forming soil seed banks. While forest seed banks may not reflect vegetation composition of past successional stages, they may inform on history and land use of a specific plot.

The objective of this study was to estimate the edge effect on the species richness in agriculturally maintained forest-grassland boundaries of coniferous forest and to determine how species respond to a forest edge. We hypothesised that species number, cover of herbs and mosses is higher in the edge, and species penetrates from nearby grasslands into forest interior. The study was conducted in the Southwestern Lithuania. The edge effect on overall herbaceous species composition of coniferous forests was evaluated by Canonical Correspondence Analysis. The species richness of herbs and mosses in the coniferous forest was highest in the forest edge and declined towards interior. The highest decrease in the number of species occurred within 0 to 5 m to the edge. The highest cover of herbs and mosses was in the forest edge and decreased towards the forest interior. CCA biplot showed a good correlation of overall species composition and the distance to the forest edge. Distribution of species along edge to interior gradient depended on the species response to different ecological factors. Ellenberg value of light was higher in the edge. Ellenberg value of nitrogen was higher in the forest interior.

Alien brambles (Rubus, Rosaceae) generate significant ecological and nature conservational threats worldwide, however, the European flora and vegetation is not seriously affected by their impacts. In this study, I report on the distribution and habitats of alien brambles in Hungary, on the basis of comprehensive field studies and complete herbarium revision. The first introduction of a non-native species of bramble (R. phoenicolasius) was reported in 1999 in the country. R. armeniacus was first recognized in 2014 (but it had been present probably decades earlier). It typically occurs in forest-poor landscapes, in regions with larger closed forests it is mainly confined to plantations, but few occurrences in nature-like stand are also found. The occur- rences in the forest steppe region indicate its drought tolerance; besides, it is the only bramble species present in the areas of typical forest-steppe climate. The species is obviously advancing (with more than 100 localities altogether) and constitutes an actual threat for the diversity and structure of fringes and wooded grassland mosaics in drier regions. Two new casual aliens, R. laciniatus and R. occidentalis, are reported here for the first time for Hungary. Another two species, R. odoratus and R. xanthocarpus, are known only from cultivation.

The article refers to a broader context of scientific debates on the effect of climate warming on shifts in species ranges and describes the recent changes in the distribution and life strategy of Hedera helix close to its eastern limit, in light of climate changes. European ivy is an ecotone species, occurring in fringe communities, in deciduous and mixed deciduous forests in fresh and moist habitats that are occupied by oak-hornbeam and riparian alder-ash forests in Central Poland. Since the mid-20th century, the ivy, a species rarely reproducing generatively, has become an expansive plant with a growing number of sites where flowering and fruiting individuals are encountered. We studied the distribution, habitat requirements and flowering of H. helix in Central Poland in the years 2015–2017 and compared to the situation in the mid-1970s. Climate changes in terms of average air temperatures and precipitation amounts for the past four decades were also assessed. Within the study area, 474 stands of naturally growing Hedera have recently been identified. Ivy was found to reproduce generatively on 121 of those locations. There has been an almost 10-fold increase in the number of fruiting ivy specimens since the mid-1970s of the 20th century. Changes in the species life strategy can be ascribed to the increase in both average air temperatures and solar radiation intensity observed for the past decades. Both enhanced fragmentation of woodland tracts and development of forest ecotones and forest canopy openings promote the expansion of H. helix, while its habitat preferences remain unchanged.

In this study, we examine the pattern of occurrence of Impatiens parviflora in Central European oak forests over time and its ecological requirements within these types of communities. Research was based on phytosociological data collected in 3776 relevés. A modified TWINSPAN algorithm were used to distinguish the groups of oak forests. The ecological preferences of the I. parviflora and studied communities as well as differences between invaded and non-invaded vegetation plots were analyzed using mean weighted Ellenberg indicator values (EIVs). Finally, both the temporal pattern of I. parviflora participation and changes in its coverage in the studied communities were analyzed. Our study confirmed a high adaptability of this species with respect to temperature, moisture, soil reaction and nutrients and determined its broad ecological optimum in oak forests. However, it also revealed both a greater sensitivity of some communities within Central European oak forests to the invasion of I. parviflora and differences in habitat conditions between invaded and non-invaded vegetation plots. This suggests that the habitat niche of I. parviflora within oak forests is not accidental. The analysis of temporal changes in the frequency of I. parviflora confirmed a 20% increase in relevés over the last 50 years. However, we did not identify any statistically significant rise in the coverage of I. parviflora in oak forests specifically during the studied period.

The paper presents socio-ecological and ecological characterisation of 72 bryophyte species found in the years 2008-2012 on midforest roads passing through nine nature reserves situated in the Łódź region. Nine species occurred excl usively in this habitat. Most of the species noted (63%) were forest bryophytes occurring also inside the forest phytocoenoses studied, they constituted 95.5% of all the records. The non-forest species show diff erent socio-ecological relations: some of them occur typically on meadows or in grassy forest ecotones, others – in fens or bogs but there are also some pioneer bryophytes colonizing initial sites, both of natural and anthropogenic character. They diff er from the forest species occurring on midforest roads in their ecological demands regarding the habitat reaction (presence of subneutral species) and light (higher participation of heliophytes). Nine of them (13%) are considered to be synanthropic bryophytes. Details of the species occurrence are provided.

Forests perform essential ecological functions - water protection, sanitation, health, recreation, and aesthetics. The research aimed to substantiate the ecological and economic importance of forest resources in the Kyiv region and analyse their rational use and protection. The article shows that the Kyiv region belongs to the regions with an average level of forest cover – 592.8 thousand hectares or 22.2%. The level of forest cover is uneven in the area of the Kyiv Forest zone. It is 44%, and in the area of the Forest-Steppe, it is much lower and decreases from north to south. The use of forest resources in the Kyiv region in 2019 amounted to harvesting liquid wood of 999.5 thousand m2, and deforestation was carried out on 75.5 thousand hectares. The region’s volume of forestry works and services amounted to 8,9 million dollars, and the wood stock makes 90805,9 thousand m2. Emphasis is placed on the importance of protecting the Red Book species of plants and fungi that grow in the forests of the Kyiv region. Examples of harmful economic activity in the areas belonging to the nature reserve fund and large-scale fires in April 2020, which covered more than 3.5 thousand hectares of forests in the region and caused damage to forest fauna and flora. The studied region’s positive environmental and economic factors have been admitted by planting trees on an area of 2151 hectares and sowing seeds of forest species on an area of 67 hectares in 2020.

Fire usually causes changes in the composition and diversity of herbaceous species. The present paper aimed to study the effect of repeated fire incidents on understory species diversity in the Saravan forests of Guilan Province located in the north of Iran. To do so, three 50-hectare areas with identical physiographical conditions and overstory (hand-planted softwood Pinus taeda) were selected. Seven fire incidences occurred for the 10-year period in one of the areas and the other area experienced three fire incidents within the same period. The area with no fire incidents was considered as the control area. All the fire incidents were surface ones. The systematic random method with a sample size 100 × 200 m was used for collecting data. Based on the above, 25 samples were determined in each area. The whole coverage of the understory was taken into consideration using Whittaker’s method and the Domain criterion so as to calculate species diversity indices. The results showed that Shannon-Wiener diversity and Menhinick’s richness in the regions which experienced 3 and 7 fire incidents were maximum and minimum, respectively, whereas no significant difference was seen between the regions with regard to Smith and Wilson’s evenness index.

The aim of the study is to analyze changes in the species composition and in the diameter structure of the main forest−building species in the Roztocze National Park (central−eastern Poland). The research was carried out on 315 permanent monitoring plots. The range of collected data included: type of protection (strict and active protection), forest site type, tree species and their dbh (>7 cm over bark). Measurements and observations were made in 2007 and repeated in 2017. There was a significant reduction in the number of all tree species, except of beech Fagus sylvatica, regardless the protection status. Despite this, the basal area for the strict and active protection zone was similar both in 2007 (37.77 and 36.39 m2/ha, respectively) and 2017 (37.17 and 37.85 m2/ha, respectively). In the whole park, the number of large trees (mainly beeches) with high individual basal area increased, while the number of young generations of all species decreased. In the strict protection zone, the admixture species (decrease by 27.3%), as well as hornbeam Carpinus betulus (decrease by 22.8%), are not particularly competitive with beech. A similar tendency, although mitigated by active silvicultural treatments, was also observed in the active protection zone, in which admixture species have lost 24.8% while hornbeam 16.2%. In the strict protection area, there was a significant reduction in the number of fir Abies alba (by 14%). In the active protection zone fir increased its range and basal area, and maintains its population practically unchanged. There was also a decrease in the number of young generations, as evidenced by changes in the frequency in the 7−16 cm dbh class. The highest level of reduction in this class was found for pine Pinus sylvestris (by 64.8%), rare species (40.4%), hornbeam (31.2%), oak Quercus robur (26.6%), and spruce Picea abies (20.5%). Only beech increased the abundance in this class (by 1.4%) as well as in the next 17−26 cm class (even by 14.2%). The presented significant changes in the species composition and structure of basal area of the stands in the Roztocze National Park that occurred in the 10−year period, indicate a significant role of tending cuts in maintaining proper species composition, appropriate diameter structure of stands, their stability of natural richness and high level of diversity of forest ecosystems.

The paper provides some guidelines on the choice of the target species compositions for plantations that would replace monocultural spruce stands growing on the sites of the Silesian Beskid Mts. Part of the guidelines relates to the rules governing the sequence in which the monocultures will be converted into mixed stands. It is suggested that those rules should be combined with the principles of the establishment of progenyplantations. The seed stands of the Istebna spruce are experimentally divided into four categories according to their abilityto perform the function of a seed stand. The following features of the stands are analysed: vitality, density, stage of regeneration, protective and cultural functions. The paper contains also an outline of the methods of species conversion and the relevant references.

Productive European beech stands (Fagus sylvatica L.) involving Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) are formed in Ukrainian Roztochie. Considering value and limited distribution of beech stands involving pine in tree species composition, it is necessary to work out and implement measures for their natural restoration in connection with the climate change and the efficient use of raw materials and non-wood products. Main forestry and management indices of beech stands that include pine in tree species composition were analysed. Forestry activities that are currently carried out in middle-aged and maturing stands significantly reduce their relative completeness and growing stocks, as determined by comparing growth particularities of productive beech stands from different sources.

Opis:
Modern multifunctional forest management needs indicators showing the state of forest environment. Commonly used solution is monitoring of the abundance of species with specific environmental requirements. This paper analyses the possibility of use of the biggest European woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) as forest management quality indicator. The black woodpecker resides in all types of forest sites. The species prefers big thick trees as a nest trees, its cavities were mainly made in birches Betula sp. in Western and Southern Europe, Scots pines Pinus sylvestris in Middle and Eastern Europe and aspens Populus tremula in Northern Europe. The black woodpecker, excavating large−sized breeding cavities, is defined as a key species due to the creation of breeding sites for large secondary cavity−nesters. Because of the breeding requirements, black woodpecker can also be treated as an umbrella species for organisms associated with old trees. The way of feeding of that species shows a strong connection with the availability of dead wood. The black woodpecker is a sedentary species, which means that it is highly depended on the structure of the forest and quickly responds to changes caused by forest management. Because of the habitat requirements and relationships with other species, as well as the wide geographical range, it is a good indicator species for multifunctional suitable forest management. It can also act as a keystone species for secondary cavity nesters and umbrella species for organisms associated with old, dying trees.

The discovery of conifer somatic embryogenesis (SE) and the subsequent development of SE protocols for a range of genera and species have opened new research opportunities to forest biotechnologists and a means towards mass clonal propagation for the forest industry. This paper provides a general description of the conifer SE process, followed by a review of protocols developed specifically for several conifer species in the Pinaceae family for which production of somatic trees has been demonstrated. Additionally, future research needs, including approaches for developing markers to optimize SE process and the production of high quality embryos, are discussed.

Opis:
Presence of plant species, associated with ancient forests (continuous existence >200 years) can be used for assessing woodland biodiversity. The aim of this study is to specify which plant species, included in the ancient forests plant species list, can indicate old woodlands in parks and what plant features are characteristic for certain habitat types. Richest in ancient forest plant species are those fragments of woodlands, which have existed continuously for at least 120 years, and their fragments suffered least from human pressure during that time, whereas recent woodlands are characterized by a small share of ancient forest indicator species and domination of nitrophilous species. Investigated plants usually propagate vegetatively, their seeds are of a small size and they have regularly, densely set leaves. Plants associated with ancient woodlands are good indicators of woodland continuity in parks so they can be used for age assessment in these areas. Accumulation of such plants can be a useful criterion in parks evaluation. Proposed idea of sustainable management of a park space, including selection of areas of a great ecological value, can be a chance to preserve woodland biodiversity.

This paper present the data for monitoring forest conditions and forest resource management by a local community adjacent to the Doi Laung Wildlife Sanctuary, Huaimai Sub-district, Song District, Phrae Province, Thailand. This study uses quantitative forest surveys, interviews, discussions, and descriptions of the historical context of public participation in forest management including a detailed assessment of field conditions. The findings of a forest resources inventory show that (1) from the three sampled areas, Doi Laung Wildlife Sanctuary has highest richness, followed by village #16 and #14, and (2) Huaikhon #16 implied the process of framework to maintain a healthy condition and response to community needs with collective management. The conceptual model assessment that links key group indicators and drivers is presented based on previously developed assessment models. The framework focuses on the best way to provide forest management, forest fire prevention, and firefighting as well as monitoring of Check-dam construction and other activities that support the recovery of the forest community. This paper demonstrates the general of an environmental assessment framework to applying organize environmental information to facilitate policy decision making for the sustainable development.

After the lapse of 48 years, a renewed study on species composition of desmids was carried out at the Błoto peat bog in the Niepołomice Forest. During this period, the peat bog underwent far-reaching changes caused by man. Out of 41 species recorded by Wasylik (1955), the occurrence of only 11 was confirmed. However, 14 species absent at the time of the earlier study were found. In all, 25 species of desmids were found. The present state of the desmid flora was brought about by increase of pH, draining of the area, disappearance of peat mosses and probably by eutrophication of waters in the studied area.

Opis:
The paper describes changes, which took place over the last 30 years in old−growth forest stands occupying two permanent research plots, established in the Kaliszki and Sieraków strict protection areas in the Kampinos National Park (central Poland). Both plots have a form of ecological transects. The Kaliszki plot is 20 m wide and 700 m long (1.40 ha), while the Sieraków plot (total area of 2.56 ha) consists of two parts: main (40×460 m) and side (40×180 m) transect. In the Kaliszki plot, the stand measurements were conducted in 1993, 2007, and 2017, while in the Sieraków plot – in 1989, 1994, 2006, and 2017. For every tree with breast height diameter (DBH) 5 cm, species identity, DBH and spatial coordinates were determined. Starting from the second census, all trees which had died (‘losses’), as well as trees which exceeded the DBH threshold (‘gains’) since the previous record were noted, as well. The major tree species occurring on sample plots are Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), silver and downy birch (Betula sp.), and black alder (Alnus glutinosa). During the study period, the overall tree density declined by ca. 50%. The diminishing trends occurred for all dominant tree species. In contrast to major, dominant tree species, the demographic status of a group of minor tree species (lime, hornbeam and maple) was much more stable. One may even speak about some expansion in this case. Particularly, hornbeam density increased rapidly in the period 2006−2017 in some areas of the main transect located in the Sieraków plot. The future studies will show if this tendency will be maintained and will include other regions of sample plots. Assuming a lack of significant disturbances, one may expect that the stands growing on research plots will rather slowly change in the nearest future. Most dynamics will have a quantitative and not qualitative character. One may anticipate, for example, a growing role of pedunculate oak at the expense of Scots pine, however, considering that the two species are rather long−living, they will probably for a long time keep their dominant roles in the stand canopies.

Fifty eight species and three varieties of slime moulds were collected in the Lipówka reserve in 1999 and 2001. Thirty taxa of slime moulds very rare and rare in Poland were recorded in the reserve, including: Arcyria minuta, A. stipata, Physarum penetrale, P. robustum, and Symphytocarpus flaccidus which are red listed (Drozdowicz et al. 2006).
Stwierdzono występowanie 61 taksonów (58 gatunków i 3 odmiany) (Tab. 1). Lycogala epidendrum (Ryc. 3).

In July, 1992, fire swept through the Jelonka Reserve (52o35'33"N; 23o22'10"E). Litter, herbs layer and juniper shrubs were razed and the tree trunks of Pinus sylvestris and Populus tremula damaged, which resulted in their death the following year. Five research plots of 25 m2 each were established in the post-fire area. The species present there and their degrees of coverage were listed on the Londo scale between 1993 and 2002. The calculation of average degrees of coverage for individual populations allowed for the establishing of a chronological pattern of post-fire succession. The following findings have been made: 1) the primary function in colonization belongs to species of guerilla strategy of growth whose dormant buds survived fire underground (Holcus mollis, Calluna vulgaris and Populus tremula) or phalanx strategy of growth (Corynephoms canescens); 2) the dominants of the initial succession stage are perennial grasses, not therophytes; 3) the spatial pattern of succession is influenced by the occurrence of H. mollis or C. canescens in a particular location; 4) the initial stage terminates with the occurrence and further growth of C. vulgaris clumps; the post-fire succession in the Jelonka Reserve attained a brushwood stage faster in comparison to secondary succession, formerly triggered by the cessation of cultivation on arable land.

In fall 2018 and 2019, we assessed colonization by fungi on Douglas fir trees [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco], white pine (Pinus strobus L.), and red cedar (Thuja plicata D. Don.) on selected experimental plots of the former Prussian Experimental Station, where nonnative tree species were introduced from North America over a century ago. The presence of sporocarps on trunks, root collars, and stumps as well as the litter layer in the soil within a radius of 0.5 m around the trunk of the tree was determined. Additionally, the volume of dead wood on the forest floor of the entire plot was assessed. We recorded numerous fungi on trees and stumps as well as in the litter and soil. For the 31 plots in 12 forest districts, we determined 745 sporocarps of 48 taxa, with 335/19 on the wood of P. menziesii trees and stumps, 377/15 on P. strobus, and 33/6 on T. plicata trees. The highest share of trees with various trunk damage levels was found for T. plicata (70.3%) and the lowest for P. menziesii (6.2%). Among the root parasitic fungi, Heterobasidion sp. and Armillaria sp. were found, especially on the collars and stumps of T. plicata and P. strobus; we did not find basidiomata of both pathogens on P. menziesii. The volume of dead wood within the P. menziesii plots averaged 7.1 m3/ha, whereas in T. plicata plots, it was 56.3 m3/ha. We identified 10 taxa that have not been reported in association with P. strobus for Poland (Cylindrobasidium laeve, Dacrymyces sp., Exidia pithya, E. saccharina, Gymnopilus pnetrans, Leptoporus mollis, Mycena sanguinolenta, Tapinella panuoides, Trametes versicolor, and Xylaria hypoxylon) and three taxa (Exidia pithya, Leptoporus mollis, Serpula himantioides) associated with T. plicata.

A numerical analysis of the phytosociological relevés from ancient and recent woodland on a mesic forest site in central Poland was carried out. Three groups of forest stands were recognised: planted with Pinus, recent and ancient oak-hornbeam Tilio-Carpinetum. The species of ancient woodland occurred mainly in ancient oak-hornbeam forest stands, however some ferns: Dryopteris carthusiana, D. dilatata and D. filix-mas, and an orchid species Epipactis helleborine, are to be found mainly or exclusively in recent forests. The occurrence of ancient forest species in recent woods may be putatively explained by long-distance wind dispersal or by the thriving in situ in unrecognised small wood patches. Twelve ancient woodland indicators (i.e. 36% of a total number found in the region under study) occur exclusively in ancient woodland. It underlines the role of passive species protection in the maintenance of the regional species diversity.

This paper presents the results of floristic studies conducted in the years 2003 – 2005 within the area of the Polesie National Park. The aim of the research was to compare the flora of initial succession stages in drainage ditches with the flora of neighbouring forest areas undergoing transformation as a result of drainage. Floristic lists were made in four designated study areas as well as in forest phytocoenoses. The results of field investigations were subjected to analysis with regard to the systematic affinity of the flora and proportions of plant life-forms as well as of historical-geographical groups and range groups. In the species composition of the studied drainage ditches hemicryptophytes were the dominant group of plant higher life-forms, whereas in the neighbouring communities the flora was represented by both hemicryptophytes and megaphanerophytes. In historical and geographical terms, the flora of drainage ditches and neighbouring communities represents definitely the group of spontaneophytes. Anthropogenic habitats, which developed within the drainage ditches, were colonised by native flora species characteristic for the Polesie National Park area.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to simulate transformation of species composition, biomass and number of treesin spruce stands depending on a possible combination of cutting and planting scenarios as well as climate changes. The FORDRY computer model was used to predict the dynamics of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands in Nadsyansky Regional Landscape Park in the Ukrainian Carpathians. Potential changes in species composition, biomass and number of trees were forecasted for the next 50 years. Four scenarios, first – warm-dry, second – cutting dead spruce trees, third – cutting all trees andfourth – planting, were compared to the control one. The analysis revealed a rapid decrease of stand biomass in the first decade as a result of spruce decline. The model predicts an increase in beech biomass before the 50th year of simulation in all scenarios. In the planting scenario, the biomass of beech increased up to 199.9 ± 6.9 t·ha-1 in the 50th year. Correlation analysis showed weak autocorrelations of spruce and negative cross-correlations of spruce with the total stand in control and other scenarios. The output of performed simulations is supported with field and literature data. Results of this study can be applied in the long-term planning of the management and conservation activities in this region. The application of FORDRY model was found useful for analysing the potential scenarios of spruce stand transformation in Nadsyansky Regional Landscape Park.

Opis:
A Scots pine forest, affected by the great cormorant colony, was studied by plot-based fungal survey method during the years 2010-2012 in Lithuania. Diversity and composition of fungal communities were investigated at five zones that had been influenced by different stages of breeding colony establishment: starting-point and almost abandoned cormorant colony part (zones A and B), active part (zones C and D), and the edge of the colony (zone E). The control zone G in undamaged by cormorants pine stand was assessed too. A total of 257 fungal species of ascomycetes including anamorphic fungi, basidiomycetes and zygomycetes were recorded. Seven species were registered for the first time in Lithuania. Species richness in the examined zones varied, lowest being in zones B (51 species), C (46) and D (73) and almost twice as high in the zones A and E (129 and 120, respectively). The comparison of fungal species compositions of different zones showed that their similarity was rather low (SS: 0.22–0.59). The most obvious changes in the trophic structure of fungal communities in the territory occupied by the bird colony were a strong decrease of mycorrhizal species, the presence of coprophilous fungi on forest litter, and the appearance of host-specialized fungi on alien and non-forest plants that have established in the disturbed forest.

The assumption of biological land reclamation in the forest direction is to introduce trees and shrubs on the reclaimed area so as to bring it as close as possible to the natural state based on the species characteristic for forest communities. While assessing the concept of biodiversity resulting from the naturalistic approach to the forest as a timeless good, it is necessary to take into account the diversity of plantings used and their multifunctionality. One of the functions is to designate crops for utility purposes, by creating a natural undergrowth, birdhouses, forest fringe plantings and enclaves of edible fruit plants. As part of the research, implementing the biodiversity of midforest plantings in the post-mining areas of the “Górażdże” Limestone Mine (Opolskie Voivodeship), the focus was put on the natural renewal of the tree stand with the admixture of fruiting plants. The application of fruit tree and shrub plantings on relatively small areas allowed the creation of areas of high biodiversity on the recultivated monoculture grounds. The results of the research revealed a relatively high efficiency of the planted trees and shrubs regardless of the existing habitat conditions. The following species had the best health status throughout the vegetation period: apple-tree, common pear, briar-rose, blackthorn and singleseed hawthorn. The use of fruit tree and shrub plantings will contribute, on the one hand, to reducing the costs of reclamation, which is a measurable effect for the mine manager, and strengthening the ecological potential of the new biotope created under the conditions of strong anthropogenic pressure on the other.

This study present species composition and potential of litter on carbon and nitrogen return in secondary mixed deciduous forest after shifting cultivation. The dominant species of trees were Haldina cordifolia, Albizia odoratissima and Lagerstroemia duperreana. The Important Value Index (IVI) values of trees were 132.91, 17.78 and 14.22, respectively. The pattern for the decomposition coefficients (k) was highest in the wet period (May–September) and lowest in the dry period (October–April). The carbon and nitrogen return patterns increased in the dry period (October– April) and decreased in the wet period (May–September). Carbon and nitrogen loss in the decomposing litter continually decreased during the decomposition process from the initial levels, with a final relatively rapid release in the wet period. Results from this study was understanding of community composition, litterfall production and litter decomposition for understanding potential of secondary mixed deciduous forest for balancing carbon for mitigating greenhouse gas effect in the local area.

The diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi and sporocarps abundance were investigated in 2003-2005 at nine permanent study plots in a 50-year-old pine forest. Diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi consist of 53 taxa and the majority of them belonged to the genera Cortinarius, Russula, Amanita and Tricholoma. The most frequent species, whose fruit bodies were found in each study plot, were C. cibarius, L. necator L. rufus, P. involutus, R. aeruginea, T. saponaceumand the most abundant species which made the main part of total sporocarp yield were C. cibarius and P. involutus. The lowest species richness of ectomycorrhizal fungi was in study plots with the densest cover of grasses. Maximum of species over the fruiting period was characteristic for October and for September. It was noticed that some species virtually never occurred together at the same plot (e.g. C. cibarius and H. aurantiaca), meanwhile others occurred together quite frequently (e.g. H. aurantiacaand X. badius).

The secondary succession pattern observed on an arable field abandoned since 1974 in Tilio-Carpinetum habitat is described and disscussed. Results obtained during 36 years of study confirm that succession on an abandoned field leads from a typical segetal community to the formation of a juvenile treestand composed of pioneer species. Our study supports the view that succession is a process which is largely dependent on the initial conditions and surrounding vegetation. The results indicate that some species can modify the course of this process, accelerating or slowing it down. Limitations of the method and prognosis of future vegetation development are also discussed.

Forest edges generally represent a very important element of ecological stability. The goal of this paper is to classify the types of anthropogenic forest edges in the area of Starohorské Mountains and to analyze anthropogenic impacts on the selected attributes of forest edges. We evaluated the attributes of a biocomplex, type of forest edge, its structure, consistence, species composition and other factors. The differences in environment variables and anthropic impact were influenced by singularities in the composition and species variability of vegetation. In the monitored areas we defined seven types and four subtypes of forest edges according to its vertical and horizontal structure. With the help of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) we also interpreted organization relevés and species by gradients of environment variables, and with the help of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) we tested their statistical significance. From the results of our research, there is a clear tendency for high diversity of living species in the forest edge. Environmental variables interpreting the highest volume of species variability are the altitude and transect position.

Forest meadows are characterized by high species diversity and serve many important functions in nature. On their area, there is a considerable variety of aquatic and edaphic conditions and unique microclimate, which is affected by closeness of a forest, which determines both system of habitat conditions and floristic composition of those meadows. Individual plant species present in the grasslands sward are often indicators of specific habitat conditions in the area. It can be specified more exactly site conditions using bioindication for the whole plant associations. Fitoidication method is a objective, yet cheaper and simpler in implementation method than the traditional chemical examinations. The aim of studies was to fix floristic composition of forest meadows' sward and on this basis lay down conditions of their habitats. Investigated forest grasslands were surrendered by mixed forest, situated on north of Klodawa (Lubuskie Province). There were made botanic-gravimetric analyses to stipulate floristic composition of sward and used ecological indicators values of vascular plants acc. to Zarzycki et al. [14] to appraise habitat's conditions. Estimated moisture of habitat (W), trophic status of soil (Tr), soil acidity and light conditions in communities. On this area there were floristic types with domination of Carex riparia, Phalaris arundinacea, Phalaris arundinacea with Alopecurus pratensis, Alopecurus pratensis, Arrhenatherum elatius with Festuca rubra, Arrhenatherum elatius with Holcus lanatus, Arrhenatherum elatius, Festuca ovina. On a basis of indicator species there found out that the most various were moisture conditions, characterized as from wet to dry. Soils of the largest area of investigated meadows were eutrophic with neutral to slightly alkaline pH, only soils estimated as dry were oligotrophic, and species occurred there had distinctive soil pH tolerance. There were moderate light conditions in investigated plant communities, only in community with domination of sedges recorded few species which were tolerant to partial shade.

A lichenological inventory was conducted in the pine stands in the south-eastern region of Żerków-Czeszewo Landscape Park. The aim of this study was to recognize the lichen species diversity on the bark of Pinus sylvestris by considering tree age and forest habitat type. In total, 26 species of lichenized fungi were found on the bark of P. sylvestris. The biota comprises common and widespread species in Poland. Tree age positively and significantly influenced the species richness on the bark of P. sylvestris. The suitability of the pine tree age for lichens evident as alpha diversity seemed to be independent from the habitat of the trees. The age of phorophytes strongly affected the presence of Hypocenomyce scalaris. Mixed fresh coniferous forests were characterized by higher beta- and gamma diversity compared to fresh coniferous forests. There was no correlation between the number of species per tree (alpha diversity) and diversification of species composition in relation to the distance between pines. The findings indicate that maintenance of a variety of phorophytes and age-diversified tree stands can prevent impoverishment of the lichen biota in the south-eastern part of Żerków-Czeszewo Landscape Park.

Owing to the unpredictability of changes in a habitat, a silvicultural aim should be treated as a "vision" of the future stand and adjusted in the course of its development. To meet the rational principles of stand conversion, it is necessary to fully use the natural processes occurring in forest ecosystems. More attention should be given to the species of early succession stages, which are better adapted to the changing habitat conditions, and richer species composition should be ensured to disperse silvicultural risks.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono analizę możliwości zastosowania zobrazowań hiperspektralnych HySpex do wykonania map rozmieszczenia poszczególnych gatunków drzewostanów leśnych, na przykładzie Puszczy Białowieskiej. Całą procedurę wykonano w oprogramowaniu ENVI 5.3 (Environmental for Visualizing Images), w module specjalnie dedykowanym danym hiperspektralnym. Metodyka badawcza obejmuje: wstępne przetwarzanie obrazów, tworzenie wzorców do klasyfikacji, procedurę klasyfikacji SAM i finalną ocenę dokładności uzyskanych wyników.
This paper contains an analysis of use of hyperspectral images HySpex to create maps of tree species distribution within Bialowieza Forest. To this end, a couple of variants of image classification with the use of Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) method were carried out. Whole procedure was conducted in ENVI software environment (Environmental for Visualizing Images) intended for this kind of dataset. In the beginning, the classification process involves the hyperspectral images pre processing and training samples collection. Next, SAM algorithm as well as an estimation of precision of the classification were performed. Finally, land cover layouts for tree species distribution within the extent of hyperspectral array were generated. The accuracy of tree species detection was estimated on the basis of data derived from forest taxations. Overall accuracies of classification based on HySpex imagery were approximately 77%. The highest possible precisions were obtained for alder, pine and oak tree stands. In other cases (birch and spruce) diversified results for producer’s and user’s accuracy were achieved, which could be explained by various kinds of forest stands and characteristics of test samples used for an assessment of image classification results. On the grounds of the land cover layouts it is workable to indicate forest areas with diversified tree species distribution within Bialowieza Forest. Furthermore, remote sensing data obtained with the use of HySpex scanner has a lot of potential in forest inventory. An actualization of inventory database, woodland modelling and simulations of forest phenomena seem to be technically and economically reasoned.

Opis:
This paper presents an overview of bird research carried out in the Borki Primeval Forest during the last 30 years. The Borki Primeval Forest can be considered as one of the most important forest bird sites in Poland. Its avifauna comprises 139 breeding species, including 11 rare and endangered species listed in the Polish Red Data Book of Animals as well as 30 species listed in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive. Despite its relatively small area, the Borki Primeval Forest holds at least 1% of Polish breeding population of as many as 12 bird species . For seven out of these species it is one of the most important breeding sites in the country. The avifauna of the Borki Primeval Forest consists mostly of typical forest birds including 24 indicator species which are associated with natural forests. The richness of bird species in the Borki Primeval Forest and the abundance of several valuable groups of breeding species are the result of a high landscape and habitat diversity as well as a relatively small anthropopression combined with a high degree of naturalness of forest stands.

Opis:
Scots pine forest are of the main economic importance to the forest management in lowland Europe. Large areas of spontaneous pine forest, including old−growths, are located on two vast dune belts of the Kampinos National Park (central Poland). These forests grow on oligotrophic sandy soils with deep groundwater level. This makes the area unique to study long−term changes in this type of pine forest communities. The aim of the work was to assess the changes in the species composition and richness of undergrowth of Scots pine forests at the beginning of the XXI century. The study was conducted on 10 permanent and 53 semi−permanent plots located within stands of Peucedano−Pinetum and Querco−Pinetum associations on both dune belts of Kampinos National Park. The fieldworks were performed in 2001 and 2002, and repeated in 2015 and 2018. Based on Ward’s cluster analysis we described five local forms of plant communities. Seven species groups were distinguished and changes in their richness assessed using one sample Wilcoxon test. Each species group included species characteristic and/or differentiating for a given set of syntaxonomical units. The results confirmed the hypothesis of gradual decrease of the total species richness. The median of species richness change was –0.308 species per year and was statistically significant. The changes were bigger within the local forms of the Querco−Pinetum association in comparison to Peucedano−Pinetum. The decrease was connected especially with dry grassland and heathland species (characteristic for syntaxons of Koelerio−Corynephoretea and Nardo−Callunetea classes) as well as with coniferous forest generalist species (characteristic for syntaxons of Vaccinio−Piceetea and Cladonio−Vaccinietalia). The results suggest that the two main processes shaping the species composition at the beginning of XXI century within pine forest located on the dune belts of Kampinos National Park may be identified as (i) fluctuation, and (ii) simplification, manifested by species richness decrease. This is probably connected with forest regeneration after past human use and disturbance.

Opis:
The paper presents the list of 159 taxa, including 151 lichens and 8 saprotrophic or parasitic (lichenicolous) fungi, recorded in the designed Special Area of Conservation NATURA 2000 „Middle Łyna River Valley – Smolajny” (the Forest Division of Wichrowo). The analysed area (2953 ha) covers mostly forest communities, with natural character, associated with the valley of the Łyna river (hillside lime-oak-hornbeam forests, streamside alder-ash forest, riparian black alder forest).
Ponadto, stwierdzono gatunki znane dotychczas w kraju z bardzo nielicznych stanowisk, do któ- rych można zaliczyć: Bacidia hemipolia f. pallida, Biatora chrysantha, B. pontica, Biatoridium monasteriense, Fellhaneropsis vezdae, Lecanora farinaria.

Herein, the results of studies conducted in the Łagiewnicki Forest in the city of Łódź (central Poland) in 2010–2012 are presented. These were the first long-term observations into myxomycetes in the Łagiewnicki Forest and in central Poland. Investigations were conducted using the route method for the entire forest complex (2010–2012). Additionally, twelve logs were selected in the “Las Łagiewnicki” forest reserve for detailed observations in 2011–2012; these logs belonged to four tree species: Betula pendula Roth, Carpinus betulus L., Quercus sp., and Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. In total, 1,561 specimens were collected and were classified into 96 taxa (91 species and five varieties). Three species (Diderma saundersii, Oligonema flavidum, and Didymium eximium) are new to the biota of Poland, while five (Arcyria stipata, Hemitrichia calyculata, Oligonema schweinitzii, Physarum flavicomum, and Physarum robustum) are included on the red list of rare myxomycetes in Poland. Stemonitopsis amoena is also classified as a rare species; to date, this species has been reported in one locality in Poland. The scale by Stephenson et al. was used to determine the frequency of occurrence of individual taxa; 55 taxa were classified as rare, nine as sporadic, 26 as common, and six as abundant taxa. Three ecological groups of slime molds were identified based on the type of substrate they colonized: lignicolous (54 taxa), foliicolous (seven taxa), and corticolous (two taxa). No preference for the substrate was noticed in a group of 33 taxa that occurred on different substrate types. The phenology of myxomycete occurrence was also analyzed; 49 taxa occurred throughout the entire vegetative season, while only single records of species that were found in specific months were noted. The biota collected in the “Las Łagiewnicki” forest reserve and that in a Łagiewnicki Forest segment outside it (of the same size and the same occurrence of plant communities as in the reserve) in 2011–2012 were also compared.

Opis:
The goal of the present research was to find correlations between the topographic attributes of a river valley and local ground-floor vegetation and its habitat requirements expressed by ecological indicator values (EIV), using the geographical information systems (GIS), digital elevation model (DEM), and multivariate statistical analysis. We paid special attention to the river course, which determines the differentiation in slope aspects and the amount of solar radiation reaching the ground surface. The model object was an almost latitudinal, ca. 4-km-long break section of the Sopot river, crossing the escarpment zone of the Central Roztocze Highlands, southeastern Poland. The main material comprised species lists (with estimated abundance) for each ca. 200-m-long section, according to the river valley course, separately for the left and right riverbanks, 40 sections altogether, ca. 15 000 vegetation records, and physical and chemical soil measurements. A 3-meter resolution DEM was derived from a 1:10 000 topographic map. We calculated the correlations between the topographic attributes of the valley, species richness, and the EIVs for all the species recognized in each section of the valley. We found 241 herb plant species in the ground-floor vegetation of the study area. We did not find significant differences between the two riversides (61 ±13 species per one section for the left and 63 ±17 for the right side). Thus, the parallel course of the river valley does not change the species richness on a more “sunny” and more “shiny” riverbank. However, this factor “cooperating” with other topographic attributes of the valley significantly differentiates the shape of species showing various requirements for basic habitat resources: light, moisture, soil trophy, reaction, dispersion, and organic-matter content.

This paper presents a study on a population of Pulsatilla patens conducted in 2012 in the Myszyniec Forest District in Natura 2000 area ‘Myszynieckie Bory Sasankowe’ in the Kurpie forest (NE Poland). The purpose of the study was to determine the population structure of Pulsatilla patens, especially with regard to abundance, density, and percentage of generative plants in the total population. Correlations were examined between these population features and selected environmental characteristics including ecological indicator values, community layer coverage, number of species group. For the evaluation of the linear relationship between the variables, Spearman's correlation coefficient was used. The research confirmed a significant effect of light availability, clear cuttings areas on all mean values of such indicators of plants as number of flowers, number of plants, share of vegetative and generative plants.

Opis:
Z większą ilościowością występuje tu Carex panicea L. i Carex buxbaumii Wahlenb.
The study was carried out in the year 2010 in the Middle Basin of the Biebrza River in the Biebrza National Park. The aim was to find out if the cessation of mowing could have changed some parameters of the existing vegetation. And if yes - what kind of changes could be noted. The examined phytocoenoses were described by 23 relevčs made with the BRAUN-BLANQUET method (1964). Eleven of them were made within the transect where vegetation had been mowed every 2-4 years, and the other 12 - in the transect, where vegetation had not been mowed for the previous 7 years. Species diversity was assessed upon: species composition of each community, their syntaxonomic structure, species richness, floristic diversity calculated using the SHANNON-WIENER index (H') and site conditions estimated with the ELLENBERG phytoindication method (1992]. The utilization value based on the fodder value score (FVS) defined by FILIPEK (1973) and sod cover were also estimated. It was found that species composition in both transects was very similar, however, the proportion of some species and syntaxonomic groups of species was different. Generally, the whole examined area was covered by the phytocoenoses of Molinetum caerulae association. In the not mowed part the clear symptoms of secondary succession were noticed. Young trees and shrubs, mainly Salix cinerea, Salix repens subspec. rosmarinifolia and Betula pubescens, appeared in vegetation units. In comparison to the mowed area the total number of species in the phytosociological relevé and mean height of plants were higher, whereas the sod cover was lower. In the mowed area the mean cover of trees and shrubs was negligible. Carex panicea and Carex buxbaumii were numerous there. Other results of the abandonment of utilization were: a higher species richness and a lower value of Shannon-Wiener index. The utilisation value of vegetation in both examined transects was very poor.

Gmina Uniejów to obszar rolniczy – ponad 80% jej powierzchni stanowią użytki rolne, a lesistość wynosi obecnie 10,6%.
Uniejów agricultural landscapes dominate in the Uniejów municipality as farmland takes up more than 80% of the area, while woodland constitutes only 10.6% and is reduced to separate small wooded patches (islands) with anthropogenically impaired flora. No larger forest tracts survived there. In the years 2021–2022, the flora of 33 randomly chosen forest islands (less than 10 ha) was examined and listed, focusing particularly on species belonging to the group of “ancient woodland indicators”. Altogether 21 species of plants typical of old forests were identified in the area, out of which 10 species were found in the “richest” forest patch and only two in the poorest one. Generally, forest islands in the Uniejów municipality contain few species confined to old forests. The islands represent mostly recent secondary woods on the formerly agricultural land.

As of 2019, the total area of forest stands with the varying proportion of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in composition on the Ukrainian Roztochchia was 11,251.3 ha and the area of pine stands involving European beech in composition was 6879.5 ha. Pine stands involving beech in composition are formed on the fresh, moist and boggy relatively pure and relatively rich soil condition. Pine forest stands (average share of pine exceeds 56%), which include beech in composition occupy more than 80% of the total area of interest. Mature and overmature forest stands dominate most of the landscape. More than 85% of stands are characterized by an average relative completeness. Undergrowth of deciduous tree species, which is mainly formed by European beech or hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) and rarely by common oak (Quercus robur L.) or sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), is available under a canopy of middle-aged, ripening and mature stands. The study points to the need to rethink forest management approaches and eventually to use such methods of forest cuttings that ensure natural regeneration not only of a European beech and common oak, but primarily of a pine. The practice of creating pine plantations in such conditions favourable for its growth and development should be used only in those cases when it is impossible to achieve natural regeneration of pine.

It was found that: (i) species diversity, number of species and ln of density are linear declining function of the fallow land age; (ii) for approx. 25 years the share of diaspores of identified species groups has been relatively similar. Seed banks of 40-50-year-old fallow lands are dominated by Calluna vulgaris, while the seed bank of the old fresh coniferous forest is dominated by dicotyledonous perennials and grasses; (iii) within the first 50 years of succession the persistence of seed banks measured by the Longevity Index increases gradually.

Opis:
The composition and structure of the breeding bird community in the Borki Forest in north-eastern Poland were investigated during two separate periods: 1994–1996 and 2012–2014. Bird censuses were carried out in three plots located in mature oak-hornbeam, ash-alder and mixed coniferous forest stands. A standard combined mapping technique for estimating the number of breeding birds was applied. A total of 74 bird species bred at least once within any plot during 1994–1996 or 2012–2014. The structure of the bird assemblages on particular plots displayed a high degree of similarity, exceeding 75%, which means that they represent essentially the same bird community. However, the investigated assemblages have changed substantially over the 20 years. Both, the number of breeding bird species and the population densities on all plots, were much higher in 2012–2014 than in 1994–1996. The mean number of breeding species on all plots was over 50% higher in 2012–2014 than in 1994–1996, whereas the mean total density of breeding pairs increased by more than 60%. Total population densities on the plots increased as a result of an increase in population densities of individual bird species combined with an increase in the number of breeding species. Due to different rates of population growth for certain species, also the composition of dominating species group have changed. The observed changes in the avifauna of the Borki Forest were most probably due to an enrichment of the forest habitats structure, which was caused by natural factors, such as ageing of forest stands, forest succession and a change in water regime by beaver dams, as well as by forest management, including group felling within or in the vicinity of plots and uncovering of the forest edge.

Opis:
The utility of phytocenotic indices in the diagnosis and classification of forest sites might be limited because of vegetation degeneration in managed forests. However, even in secondary communities it may be possible to determine indicator species, although these may differ from typical and well known plant indicators. The aim of this work was to assess the vegetation diversity of Scots pine stands in representative forest site types along a moisture and fertility gradient. In total 120 sample plots from Turawa forests were included in the study. These plots represented young (21–40 years) and old (> 80 years) Scots-pine-dominated stands. The forest sites were categorized according to Polish site classification. Four site categories were studied: Boew (very nutrient-poor and mesic sites), BMoew (nutrient-poor and mesic sites), BMw (nutrient-poor and moist sites), LMw (quite nutrient-rich and moist sites). The species composition of the forest patches studied hardly differed among forest site types. Almost all of the vegetation in site Boew was different from both moist site types (BMw and LMw). Sites Boew andLMwhad the exclusive species determined as site indicators. Moreover, young stands had their own site type indicator species which differed from old stands. Numerical classification showed that only two plant communities were widespread: Leucobryo-Pinetum in Boew and BMoew, and the community of Pinus sylvestris and Molinia caerulea in BMoew, BMw, LMw. In secondary communities typical indicator species may not be useful, but it is possible to determinate species that are locally unique to forest site type. Despite the convergence in the composition of the plant community resulting from tree stand unification, plant communities have the capacity for a more diverse composition. Tree stand conversion can increase phytocenotic diversity.

Opis:
DNA markers are currently the most precise tool for forest tree species identification and can be used for comparative analyses of plant material. Molecular diagnosis of evidence and reference material is based on comparing the structure of DNA markers duplicated in the PCR reaction and estimation of the DNA profiles obtained in studied wood samples. For this purpose, the microsatellite DNA markers are the most suitable tool because of their high polymorphism and accurate detection of structural changes in the genome. The analysis of tree stump DNA profiles let avoid timely collection of data such as tree age, diameter, height and thickness, although such a piece of information may advantageous in wood identification process. For each examined tree species, i.e. Pinus sylvestris L., Picea abies (L.) Karst., Quercus robur L. and Q. petraea (Matt.) Liebl., Fagus sylvatica L., Betula pendula L., and Alnus glutinosa L., wood identification was possible via the DNA profiles established on a basis of minimum 4 microsatellite nuclear DNA loci, and at least one cytoplasmatic (mitochondrial or chloroplast) DNA marker. Determination of the DNA profiles provided fast and reliable comparison of genetic similarity between material of evidence (wood, needles, leaves, seeds) and material of reference (tree stumps) in the forest. This was done with high probability (approximately 98– 99%).

The purpose of this study was to determine changes which occurred during 23 years (1974–1997) in four stands in respect of species composition, structure, developmental stages and phases. In 1997 the Walusiowka stand represented the growing up stage, phase of a multistory structure, and during the study period its volume decreased from 698 to 676 m3/ha.The Przełęcz Sosnow stand was in the growing up stage, phase of a little diversified storied structure and regeneration, and its volume decreased from 696 to 622 m3/ha.The Grodek stand during the entire study period was in the growing up stage, phase of the selection forest structure and regeneration, and its volume increased from 529 to 585 m3/ha.The Facimiech stand in 1997 was in the optimum stage, phase of aging and regeneration, and its volume decreased from 688 to 661 m3/ha.During 1974–1997 the percentage of fir (Abies alba) considerably decreased in three stands (Walusiowka from 46 to 33%, Przełęcz Sosnow from 58 to 36%, Grodek from 42 to 24%).The Facimiech stand was almost a pure fir stand during the entire control period. In the Przełęcz Sosnow stand, due to a rapid mortality of fir and presence of vital trees of beech (Fagus sylvatica) of the growing up and optimum growth generations, the break up stage did not take place but the growing up stage had developed, which indicated the disturbance of the natural cycle of the primeval forest described by Korpel’. A scarce presence of fir upgrowth and prevalence of beech in stands composed of these two species permits to suppose that fir will be retreating in favor of beech.

Permanently balanced forest economy demands today a resignation from a constant model of the forest stand, which preferred the productive function of the forest, mostly without any consideration to its natural values formed by Mother Nature. Implanting on Polish grounds principles of multifunctional forest districts acknowledged as a breeding object of the whole forest ecosystem, giving in that way the forest economy a proecological dimension. Its a result from a general progress of civilization and achievements in forest science; reaching towards the needs and expectations from the society gaining a general acceptation from different environments. One of the fundamental elements implementing the ecosystem is to rebuild deformed and artificially barred forest phytocenosis. This refers especially to pure pine stands on habitats, in which trophoism potential explains breeding habitats species variety. A good help for the forester in this area can be a natural succesion of good, noble broad−leaved species like for example the oak. Succesion of this species takes on a special meaning in poor habitats, in which it without any special imposes enriches the biocenose with the whole positive outcome accompanying this process; it can also be a valuable clue to the potential fertility in the habitat and the complexity in the forest vegetation community. An important task is to lead the way for the oaks development from succesion to its fullest use as a natural presence in creating the future forest generation. The article below is devoted to this question describing the natural up growth of the oak in pine stands on the coniferous forest habitats in Forest District Różanna and the methods and results in which they are used for breeding.

English yew (Taxus baccata L.) is a rare tree species in Austria and gene conservation forests reserves are used to maintain English yew populations by silvicultural treatments. This paper describes the current situation of an English yew population at “Stiwollgraben”in Austria with regard to stand structure, vitality and natural regeneration. The area is one of the most important sites in Austria as it consists of 2236 yews. The vitality condition of the yew is very good, and more than 79% of the yews have been assessed as very vital to vital. The potentiality for natural regeneration (13019 one-year seedlings ha–1) is very high, but not all height classes are represented. This indicates a high survival ability of English yew at this site. Three different treatment strategies are described to maintain the yew population. The future effects of these treatments are discussed in the light of the environmental requirements of English yew.

Faunistic and ecological studies on saproxylic Collembola species were carried out in the Wigry National Park (NE Poland). Nine sites representing Tilio-Carpinetum, Serratulo-Pinetum and Peucedano-Pinetum habitats each including three different levels of disturbance were visited twice in 2015. Samples from fallen logs in different stages of decay, neighboring litter and soil as well as arboreal epiphytes were taken on each visit. The Collembola specimens were then extracted using Tullgren funnels resulting in a total of 73 838 specimens from 270 samples. Specimen identification revealed the occurrence of 63 species, including 5 saproxylobiontic, 7 saproxylophilous, 4 xerophilous species living in epiphytic mosses and lichens as well as 47 hemiedaphic or euedaphic species. This composition of saproxylic fauna seems to be typical for the region with the most diverse assemblages being found in Tilio-Carpinetum habitats, while Serratulo-Pinetum and Peucedano-Pinetum are clearly less diverse. Additionally, a slight decrease in the number of Collembola species with increasing forest disturbance was observed. Furthermore, an increase in the number of Collembola species with the degree of dead wood decomposition was also found. This indicates that saproxylic springtail assemblages are sensitive to anthropogenic changes.

The influence of the edge effect on the meadow vegetation pattern was studied in the forest glades in the central part of the Middle Sudety Mts. (SW Poland). The spectacular edge effect is seen in the range of 4 m from the forest border towards the center of the glades. Within that belt we observed decrease in tree and bush species number, increase in share of graminoids and Fabaceae species, as well as increase in share of species generally related to grassland communities. A significant increase in species number and values of Shannon−Wiener diversity index was noticed within the distance of eight meters from the edges of glades.

To evaluate the geographic variability of Pinus sylvestris populations seven morphological traits of needles of pines from IUFRO 1982 provenance trial have been analyzed. The studied populations originated from northern (>55°N in Russia, Sweden and Latvia), central (55-47°N in Poland, Germany, Belgium, France, Slovakia) andsouthern (<47°N in Hungary, Bosnia, Montenegro andTurkey) European ranges of Scots pine. The analyzedprovenance trial experimental areas were locatedin Kórnik (western Poland) andin Supraśl (north-eastern Poland). The greatest variation was found in needle length and number of stomata rows on the flat and convex side of a needle, whereas number of stomata per 2mmof needle length on flat and convex side of a needle was stable, with minor interpopulational variation. Biometrical analyses revealed a significant population × location interaction anda geographical pattern in interpopulational differentiation in both experimental sites, with the northern andsouthern European Scots pine groups of provenancesdiffering significantly from the group of central origin. The results obtainedare compatible with previous results of studies on provenance variability of the Scots pine from IUFRO 1982. In the light of available data, the influence of the Balkan glacial refugia of Pinus sylvestris on a present genetic diversity of this species in Europe and the reconstruction of Scots pine migration routes after the last glacial period are discussed.

Vegetation of deciduous forests in the Štiavnické vrchy Mts (Central Slovakia) was studied using the standard Zürich-Montpellier approach. The numerical classification and ordination technique were applied to determine the main forest vegetation types and to find the responsible environmental drivers related to their distribution patterns, respectively. The data set including 198 relevés collected by authors in 1997-2009 and 185 relevés excerpted from literature was used to analysis. Numerical classification resulted in delimitation of fourteen vegetation types representing eleven associations with two variants and two communities within the Quercetea roboripetraeae and Querco-Fagetea classes. The major environmental gradients in variation of forest species composition were associated with moisture and nutrient content following the average Ellenberg indicator values. Along the moisture gradient, vegetation types were ordered from subxerophilous oak forests turn mesophilous mixed oak-hornbeam, beech and ravine forests to hygrophilous riparian alder forest. The results confirmed important role of soil nutrients and moisture by determination of forest vegetation in subcontinental part of Central Europe. Special attention was given to the discussion of floristical characteristics, site conditions and syntaxonomy.

The research was conducted on four patches of thermophilous oak wood in Białowieża Primeval Forest: A – with a woodstand: oak + approx. 30-year-old hornbeam + hornbeam brushwood; B – with a hornbeam stand formed by natural seed fall after logging (ca. 1920) oaks; C – after logging oaks and replanted (ca. 1965) with pine and oak; D – with a natural low-density oak stand. Species composition and seed bank density were estimated using the seedling emergence method. Seedling emergence was observed over two vegetation seasons. Research demonstrated that: 1) the species abundance of the seed banks depends on canopy cover (A, B approx. 50 species; C, D approx. 70 species); 2) the floristical similarity (Sørensen’s index) of the seed bank and ground vegetation is higher in the undisturbed patch D (0.50) than in disturbed patches (0.30-0.35); 3) species diversity in plots A, B, C, D (H’=12.5; 13.4; 15.5; 16.9) and seed bank density per m2 (432.5; 958.0; 1486.5; 2268.0) are negatively correlated with the degree of patch shading; 4) the average weight of diaspores in the seed banks of shady plots is lower (A, B approx. 0.003 g) than that of sunny plots (C, D approx. 0.08 g); 5) the share of long-lived diaspores increases in patches after logging.

The study included 15 isolated islands, grouped in five size classes. Trapped individuals were identified to species and measured and weighted. The number of carabid species was higher in the ecotone zones as compared with the island interior. Reduction in total number of carabid species was observed with increasing size of an island. The share of forest related carabid species was positively correlated with the size of an island; similar was the pattern concerning the large zoophages, the European and brachypterous species. The larger an island, the higher value of the mean individual biomass index (SBO) and the index of Progressive Features Sum (SCP). With the growing size of the islands, the carabid communities are placed still further to the uppermost right hand corner in the SCP/SBO diagram (fig. 2). Response of carabid communities to different size forest islands has shown that the smallest islands which favor the establishment of stable forest communities are 0.63 ha. Hence, it is to consider in the practice of forest management to create islands not smaller than that area (this may be established at the level of about 1 ha, for the practical purposes).

The paper presents the changes in vascular plants vegetation of Doliska and Zimna Woda nature reserves (central Poland). In 1960s Pino−Quercetum forest was noted at both reserves. Nowadays, it evolved into an oak−lime−hornbeam forest Tilio−Carpinetum betuli. The gradual replacement of Scots pine and other coniferous species into broad−leaved species is observed. Additionally, flora synanthropization and encroachment of invasive alien species (e.g. Impatiens parviflora) into the reserves was found.

Opis:
The study was carried out in the year 2004 in the Zimnik and Czyrna catchments situated on opposite slopes of Skrzyczne in the Beskid Śląski Mts. Water samples collected from streams during three sampling sessions were analysed. The first session was carried out during snowmelt (April/May), the second during intensive rainfall in the vegetation season (June) and the third - during low water level (October). A data set consisting of conductivity, water pH, concentrations of major anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-) and cations (NH4+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+) was produced and waters were then classified according to Polish standards (years 2002 and 2004). Chemical composition of stream waters depended on physical and geological properties of drainage areas and on seasonal changes of water level in the catchment. Water class depended also on precipitation and on forest type. It was found that water from most sampling points in streams was unfit for drinking - 66 out of collected 89 samples were beyond the first A1 category and the main reason for that was too low pH and high concentrations of NH4+ and NO3-. During intensive rainfall in the vegetation season higher washing out of cations was observed from beech and multispecies forest stands than from spruce stands, which partly neutralized water pH and in consequence improved water quality. This phenomenon should be considered while afforesting streams neighborhoods where water is or will be used as a source of drinking water.
Badania zostały przeprowadzone w 2004 roku w zlewniach Zimnika i Czyrnej leżących na przeciwległych stokach Skrzycznego w Beskidzie Śląskim. Analizie poddano wody pobrane z potoków podczas trzech sesji pomiarowych. Wyniki poddano klasyfikacji wód pitnych wg polskich norm (z 2002 i 2004 r.).

Opis:
The lowlands in northeast Germany are among the driest and at the same time the most densely wooded regions in Germany. Low annual precipitation between 500 and 600 mm and the light sandy soils with their low water storage capacity and high porosity lead to limited water availability. Therefore the hydrological functions of forests play an important role in the fields of regional water budget, water supply and water distribution. To investigate the water consumption of different tree species, lysimeters were installed at Britz near Eberswalde under comparable site conditions. Nine large-scale lysimeters, each with an area of 100 m² and 5 m deep, were built in the early 1970s. In 1974 the lysimeters were planted with Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), common beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), larch (Larix decidua L.) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) as experimental stands of 0.3 ha each according to the usual management practices. The areas surrounding the lysimeters were planted similarly. The tree species is of outstanding importance for deep seepage under forest stands. Under the given precipitation and soil conditions, the course of interception and hence, the amount of seepage water depend on the crown structure in the stand. Depending on the amount of interception of the tree canopy and the duration of the leaching phase in spring, the mixed stands range between pure pine and pure beech. Making use of silvicultural methods and adequate stand treatment, forestry is able to control the water budget of landscapes.
Niziny północno-wschodnich Niemiec należą do najbardziej suchych i jednocześnie najbardziej zalesionych regionów Niemiec. Niski roczny opad (500-600 mm) i lekkie, piaszczyste gleby o małej pojemności retencyjnej i dużej porowatości są powodem ograniczonej dostępności wody. Dlatego hydrologiczne funkcje lasu mają duże znaczenie dla regionalnych bilansów wodnych, zaopatrzenia w wodę i jej dystrybucji. Aby zbadać zużycie wody przez różne gatunki drzew, w Britz koło Eberswaldu zainstalowano lizymetry w porównywalnych warunkach siedliskowych. Dziewięć dużych lizymetrów o powierzchni 100 m² i głębokości 5 m każdy zbudowano we wczesnych latach siedemdziesiątych XX w.. W 1974 r. lizymetry obsadzono sosną zwyczajną (Pinus sylvestris L), bukiem zwyczajnym (Fagus sylvatica L.), modrzewiem europejskim (Larix decidua L.) i daglezją zieloną (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), tworząc eksperymentalne stanowiska zgodnie ze zwykłą praktyką leśną. Powierzchnie otaczające lizymetry obsadzono podobnie. Gatunek drzewa wpływa znacząco na głębokie przesiąkanie wody w stanowisku leśnym. W danych warunkach opadowych i glebowych przebieg intercepcji, a stąd i ilość infiltrującej wody, zależy od struktur koron drzew w stanowisku.

Opis:
The aim of the research described in this paper is to classify groundwater level patterns in pine stands of forest fresh sites. The approach has been employed with the view to facilitate explaining interactions between physiographic characteristics and groundwater dynamics in prospective research. The methods which have been employed so far for explanation of groundwater level dynamics interactions with local physiographic conditions do not let to draw firm conclusions. The classification of groundwater dynamics patterns requires employing more sophisticated methods, because of a relatively extensive range of groundwater dynamics site-to-site variability expressed, e.g., by amplitude and cycle period. The methods of groundwater patterns classification proposed in the literature focused either on hydrogeological criteria or, if related to forest ecosystems, focused on water balance elements in forest habitats. The area selected for investigation represented typical features for the Northern European Lowland forests defined by soil and form of terrain pattern shaped by the last glacial period (Vistulian glaciation) and dominant share of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in stand species composition. The research period covered the 2002-2007 hydrological years. The measurement used in analysis covered 35 sites equipped with measurement wells.

In the present study we analysed the mitochondrial intraspecific variation in natural populations of Norway spruce. We used the second intron of the nad1 gene, which contains two polymorphic short tandem repeats. Due to the maternal inheritance of mitochondrial DNA in Norway spruce, the spatial distribution of haplotype DNA allows insights into seed dispersal and artificial seed transfer. A total of 504 trees distributed all over Austria were genotyped, and 9 different haplotypes could be found. A geographical map of the haplotype variation pattern of Picea abies is presented.

Opis:
W Polsce oraz czynniki determinujące ich występowanie. Sylwan 160 (10): 795−804. In recent years, rapid changes related to forest operations have been observed in the forestry sector in Poland. A growing number of harvesters, an increased volume of harvested timber and a larger proportion of broadleaved species are considered the most important. The objective of this paper was to recognise the dynamics of harvester fleet change in Poland. In particular, there was an emphasis on finding out: 1) the total number of harvesters currently used in Poland (with respect to regions), 2) where and what type of machines were bought, and 3) which main factors influence the occurrence of these machines. In January 2014, a survey was sent to all forest districts. Questions related to harvesters and relevant for this paper included information about: 1) the number of harvesters in use, 2) the serial number of each harvester, 3) place of purchase (within the country or abroad), 4) status of the machine when bought (new or used), and 5) the forest district, in which an open tender was won for 2014. To avoid double counting the same harvester working in two or more forest districts, the serial number of each machine was used for identification. There were 368 harvesters reported in the survey in early 2014, although at the end of 2015 this number rose to 530 machines. The Central−West, North−West and North of Poland had the highest number of harvesters. Most of the harvesters were bought as used, though there may be a growing trend towards the purchase of new machines. A strong correlation was observed between the number of machines used in a region and the total area of lowland coniferous sites and forests, as well as the volume of harvested merchantable softwood. Currently, private forests and broadleaved species are the main factors limiting the application of harvesters in Poland.

Fires that are one of the most classic disturbance of plant communities have had a great impact on the development of Scots pine communities. Restoration of vegetation disturbed by fire in this type of community starts almost immediately after disturbance. The intensity of fire significantly influences the future composition of vascular plant species and also the rate of change. The aim of the study was to describe the effect of intensity of the surface fire on the forest floor vegetation response and to preliminary attempt to characterize the syndynamic processes occurring after the disturbance. The research was conducted in Scots pine forest Peucedano−Pinetum in the Kampinoski National Park (central Poland). We established 45 permanent study plots, including 17 not burnt (control) and 28 burnt ones. Each plot covered area of 100 m². On each plot at first we separated the areas which were not burnt, surface burnt and characterized by complete burnout of the organic horizon of the soil. Than we measured the thickness of this horizon. Additionally the volume of organic matter burnt within each plot was calculated. Vegetation was sampled using Londo scale in the year of fire (2015) and the year after (2016). We used DCA ordination and UPGMA classification methods. Recorded species were divided into forest and non−forest groups and additionally for trees and shrubs, and the others, containing dwarf shrub, herb, bryophyte and lichen species. The linear regression method was used to estimate the relationship between measured parameters, vegetation change and changes in the species richness of distinguished groups. Two processes of vegetation reaction were observed. The first was classified as regeneration and occurred within surface burnt plots. Its characteristic feature included the higher increase in forest species richness than in case of non−forest species. The other process was defined as secondary succession alike. It occurred on plots with highest burnout of soil organic matter horizon. The increase of richness of non−forest species predominated within it. The change between two processes is smooth and depends on the participation of area with complete burnout of soil organic horizon within plot. The results show, that more than one process of recovery of community can occur in the same site and it depends especially on the proportion of soil organic horizon area burnout.

The aim of this study was to determine the mutual effect of small balsam (Impatiens parviflora) and other elements of phytocoenosis on their position in the community. In the oak−hornbeam forest of the Wielkopolski National Park, Ficaria verna, Carpinus betulus self−seedlings, Vaccinium myrtillus, Galium odoratum, Pteridium aquilinum and tuft grasses were found to have locally strong inhibitory effect on small balsam growth. The effects of the interaction between Impatiens parviflora and other plants of the herbaceous layer depended not only on plant competitiveness but also on how long was the period of their co−occurrence during the growing season (i.e. on species phenology) and local differences of habitat conditions. Wherever Impatiens parviflora was a dominant species the interspecies competitive pressure (w) and species diversity H' of the herbaceous layer were highest.

The knowledge on the ichthyofauna community in forest complexes in our country is mainly limited to few information on fish species found in rivers and reservoirs located in the protected areas. Hence, the aim of present study was to evaluate the importance of forested and non−forested areas, which include small rivers, on the occurrence of fish communities. The main criteria of evaluation were species richness, biodiversity and density of fish from rivers located in forested and non−forested areas in Roztocze and Puszcza Solska (south−eastern of Poland). The 12 study sites in the two groups of small rivers located on forested and non−forested areas were chosen (tab. 1). The control fishing was performed by electrofishing using IUP−12 gear. The total of 779 individuals of fish and lamprey belonging to 22 species were caught during the study. In the sections of rivers located in non−forested areas we noted 18 species, while in the rivers in forested areas – 16 ones. The analysis of the abundance domination showed that the dominant species in the rivers sections on non−forested areas were perch, roach and gudgeon, while in rivers located in forested areas: gudgeon, dace and brown trout. Simultaneously, in abundance of fish fauna from rivers in forested area a significant share of eastern sculpin, burbot and European brook lamprey were noted. The fish communities from both habitats showed similar values of biological diversity indices, but slightly higher density was observed in the rivers located in non−forested areas. The fish species composition was highly dependent on the close surroundings of the watercourse and the type of riparian zone. For the habitats from river located in non−forested areas the common, associated with aquaculture and also invasive fish species were characteristic. However, in the rivers in wooded areas, the typical for small streams and the rheophilic fish species were more frequent. The results of present study showed, that the largest differences in the dominance in fish structure and indicators of fidelity to the habitat preferences between the groups of rivers were determined.
