This article investigates the differences in management goals between family owned and non-family owned firms in Poland. The aim is to understand whether there are general differences in between the two types of firms, along with differences in age, the internationalisation grade and the turnover of the firms. We used questionnaire-based interviews (computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI) and computer-assisted web interview (CAWI) techniques) to create a sample of 758 Polish firms that employed more than 49 people. Using the substantial family influence index put forward by Klein (2010, p. 17), we identified 396 firms as being family firms, with the rest being non-family firms. Nine goals were presented to representatives of these firms (owners, chief executive officers (CEOs), chief financial officers (CFOs)) who were then asked to sort them into four groups. The estimation of the empirical data was conducted using descriptive analyses and statistical verifications of the differences in fraction indicators. According to the literature, we found that “independence from others” (control argument) is a significant difference in family firms, along with “long-term value creation” and “high growth rates”. Our focus was on Poland, a large, Eastern European country with only a brief history as a market economy. Its private sector is relatively small and there are fewer large and well-established family firms than there are in Western Europe. The practical impact of this study lies in a better understanding of Polish family firms for all stakeholders.

Concept of innovation induces a high degree of association with the problem of high costs and the highest possible risk. Many companies solves a significant problem in the management of production associated with the financing of technological development and innovation. In every large company manufacturing managers declare that they have more projects they would like implemented as funds that may be used. Reasons for this are : low expected return, risk and unreliability associated with the project, and excessive optimism group managers. This article focuses on the theoretical aspects of innovation financing and outlines the importance of venture funds to finance innovation in companies. Summarizes and gives an overview of the most important works and basic ideas in this area of research, together with an outline of the capabilities and limitations posed by venture funds as a source of innovation funding for SMEs. Refine addresses factors affecting the financing of innova tion, and specifically discussed in this context the problem of asymmetric information, moral hazard, fiscal aspects and cash flow. Opens the problem size Companies. capital flows and based on extensive studies, particularly in the United States supports the view that small businesses have specialized as a suitable alternative to finance their venture capital for innovative projects.

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie stanu badań w Polsce i na świecie, wskazanie przyszłych kierunków badań w obszarze problematyki funkcjonowania przedsiębiorstw rodzinnych oraz przedstawienie modelu badawczego, odnoszącego się do jednego z wybranych kierunków badań nad zjawiskiem profesjonalizacji firm rodzinnych. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych studiów literaturowych przedmiotu zbudowano model badawczy, opisujący zależności pomiędzy stopniem rodzinności, profesjonalizacji oraz przyjętą strategią firmy rodzinnej a konkurencyjnością przedsiębiorstwa.
The aim of the paper is to present future research directions in the field of family business and to construct theoretical model related to one of them, in particular it refers to professionalization of family businesses that is perceived as important and up-to-date. We also identified the research gap in this regard. On the basis of literature studies we constructed research model depicting relationships between the level of familiness, professionalization as well as adopted strategy based on tradition and competitiveness of a family firm.

This paper studies the determinants of the total factor productivity (TFP) for Ukrainian firms in the manufacturing sector across macro-regions using recent micro-level datasets for 2013. Our empirical results show some degree of heterogeneity across Ukrainian macro-regions; in particular, the link between the total factor productivity, firm size, imports and the level of competition seems to be valid for all macro regions. However, the effects of private ownership status, capital intensity and exports seems to be region specific. In addition, we found no relationship between firm productivity and foreign ownership for any of the regions.

The article aims to show the key determinants of the development of early internationalizing companies (EICs). The early and quick internationalization of companies is an increasingly common trend that has been the subject of numerous research projects in many countries. It is an important area of studies focusing on the mechanisms of companies’ internationalization. The author critically analyzes some of the most significant international scientific papers of the last few years, with a special focus on the external and internal determinants of internationalization of EICs, the industries where EICs operate (both hi-tech and traditional) as well as these companies’ strategies in the area of foreign market entry and marketing. The typical characteristics of EICs are compared in the article with those of traditionally internationalized firms. The success factors of EICs in international markets have also been identified on the basis of research in this area. Finally, major threats to the development of EICs and the strengths of these firms are presented.

The aim of the study has a theoretical and researching character. The first part includes the presentation of scientific achievements in foreign and Polish literature and the authorial systematics of methods of firms’ life duration analysis (statistical and econometric study of firms cohorts). Methods of data censoring are discussed. The empirical part presents examples of the results of economic entities established in the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodship in 2009−2011 (cohort) and observed until 31 December 2013.The study of firms cohorts, such as human cohorts, are carried out using the methods of survival analysis (duration). The paper presents the possibility of using duration tables and intensity function (hazard) of firm’s liquidation. This function can take a typical inverted U-shape.

Research background: This paper explores the approach that focuses on entrepreneurial activities suppressed by restraining forces or different barriers. We investigated a particular type of obstacles reported by entrepreneurs, i.e., those which prevented their gaining access to support instruments. This paper delved into the specificity of family businesses and explained why perceptions of access to support could differ between family and non-family firms. Purpose of the article: This paper seeks to identify the differences between family and non-family businesses in terms of their perceptions of different barriers that hinder access to support instruments. Methods: The main research processes were based on logistic regression models with a dependent variable: 0 for a non-family firm and 1 for a family firm.  As dependent variables 13 barriers to the access of public support instruments were adopted. The study was conducted on a sample of 386 Polish business entities. Findings & value added: The results confirmed the existence of differences between family and non-family businesses in perceptions of barriers towards gaining support in entrepreneurial endeavours. Obstacles, such as overly-complex bureaucratic procedures and requirements, lack of access to information disseminated by business support institutions, and complicated support settlement procedures, were perceived as far less crucial by family businesses than non-family businesses. Family businesses demonstrated a lower propensity to use real property as collateral for transactions. Additionally, family businesses with financial resources that overlap with their own familial resources declared that they found it easier to make their own contributions to satisfy the requirements for support programmes or services. This paper makes several novel and significant contributions to the field. First, we add to existing research focusing exclusively on family entrepreneurial activity by drawing a comparison between family and non-family firms in terms of the perceived barriers towards gaining support. Second, we address different types of barriers. Our findings provide further evidence that different types of businesses perceive certain types of barriers differently. Third, we extend current knowledge on family businesses study in Poland.

The main goal of this paper is to empirically investigate the regional dimension of productivity determinants for 24 regions of Ukraine using micro-level dataset for individual firms in 2013. The novelty of our analysis is the comparison of the determinants of productivity in the manufacturing and service sectors. We estimate both pooled regressions for all regions and separate regressions for particular regions. The estimation results obtained for the entire country demonstrate that the majority of our explanatory variables are statistically significant for the manufacturing sector and all are statistically significant for the service sector although at different levels of significance. At the same time, the estimation results obtained separately for each region show a large degree of heterogeneity across the regions and sectors and the lack of scale economies at the firm-level.

Export is crucial for economy. It influences the level of economic growth, balance of payment and social welfare among many others. Therefore, increase in exports often becomes one of the main objectives of governments. This raises the question of how to support export activity of the companies in order to ensure the expected increase in export. Approaches towards this problem differ significantly. The fact that this support is covered mainly from public funds raises the question of the justifiability and effectiveness of such assistance. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether to support export activity at all, and if so, how to do it effectively. To achieve the goal of the article the author analyzed both Polish and foreign literature, with special emphasis on the newest trade theories. The Author analyzes secondary data describing factors that determine export activity, describes the profile of a company becoming an exporter and investigates actual connection between the offered support and the increase in export activity.

As pointed by numerous scholars high technology sectors are very apt for studying entrepreneurial activities due to their high levels of innovativeness. However, taking into account the highly dynamic and substantially hostile environment in those sectors, innovation may often not be the best strategic choice for market entry. In fact, the business practice confirms the extensive utilization of imitation strategy by technology entrepreneurs Meanwhile, the literature on entrepreneurship focuses almost exclusively on original innovators, underestimating the importance of imitation in the growth process and indicating shortage of research on imitative activities of entrepreneurs. Therefore this article presents discussion on the applicability of entrepreneurial orientation to imitators from the high-tech industries.

General innovation performance of the EU is improving, yet progress is too slow and performance gaps still remain wide within European Union. Therefore, there is a growing interest in circumstances which influence this situation. In their previous research, the authors of this paper have already proved that cultural diversity affect the innovative capacity of societies, hence the goal of thisstudy was to explore how important, in the context of other determinants of firms‘ innovative performance, are socio-cultural determinants. The results revealed that they are less relevant than technological and economic determinants but affirmed to be more significant than political, legal and ecological ones. In order to reach the conclusions, a review of scientific literature, comparative judgement of EU performance and correlation analysis were used.

Research background: Budgeting was developed during the Great Depression as a managerial tool to help enterprises survive a critical period characterized by fluctuations in macroeconomic indicators. Now, after more than eighty years, budgeting is criticized for the same reason why it was created — for lack of adaptability to unexpected changes in the business environment. Based on these facts, the presented study focuses on the specifics of budgeting in the current business environment. Purpose of the article: The aim of the work is to explore selected aspects of budgeting process in Czech firms, and to assess how the budgetary process is influenced by the progression of the business environment. Methods: To achieve presented target, the authors designed the questionnaire survey sub-mitted to employees of companies in the Czech Republic. Findings & Value added: The first part of this paper displays the state of knowledge on budgeting, the following part presents results of the survey. The study identified several trends, especially in the use of budgeting in Czech firms, characteristics of budgets in these subjects and evaluation of the sustainability of a company´s environment.

W niniejszym artykule zbadane zostały determinanty całkowitej produktywności czynników produkcji (TFP) ukraińskich przedsiębiorstw w sektorze produkcji przemysłowej oraz sektorze usług na podstawie danych mikroekonomicznych w latach 2005 i 2013. Najpierw oszacowane zostały regresje dla połączonego zbioru danych dla sektora produkcji przemysłowej i usług, a następnie odrębnie dla każdego sektora. Nasze wyniki empiryczne wykazują pozytywny związek między całkowitą produktywnością czynników produkcji, wartościami niematerialnymi i prawnymi, kapitałochłonnością, wielkością firmy, konkurencją w branży, statusem własności, oraz umiędzynarodowieniem firmy (eksport i import). Ponadto okazuje się, że determinanty produktywności różnią się między sektorami oraz latami naszej próby.
This paper examines the determinants of total factor productivity (TFP) of Ukrainian firms in manufacturing and services, using micro-level data for the years 2005 and 2013. We first estimate regressions for the pooled dataset for the manufacturing and service sectors jointly, and then separately for each sector. Our empirical results show a positive link between the total factor productivity, intangible assets, capital intensity, firm size, competition in the industry, ownership status, and firm internationalization (exports and imports). In addition, we find that the determinants of productivity differ among the sectors and years of our sample.

The 90's of the 20th century in Poland it's a period of economic development. Freedom o f establishing and carrying on a business caused rising many new, mostly small firms. Yet not all entrepreneurs were able to run their businesses for a longer period of time. The purpose of the paper is to analysis firms survival chance in a determined period o f time and to analysis differences between firms established in different years. Logistic regression model for dichotomous dependent variable will be used.

Business and commerce, and their connections to ethical thinking, are as old as civilization. This paper raises questions about the overlap and reciprocally supportive interface between business ethics and corporate social responsibility, as well as about their mutual exclusivity. Business ethics imply a system of moral principles and rules of conduct applied to business so that the business should be conducted according to certain self-recognised moral standards. Corporate social responsibility is a form of corporate selfregulation integrated into a business model. It is also called as corporate conscience, corporate citizenship, social performance, or sustainable responsible business.

The aim of the research was an assessment of the relative risk of liquidation of a company depending on its age. The research covered economic entities established in Szczecin in the period 1990-2010. The analysis was carried out with the use of a logit model. The risk of company liquidation was examined depending on the entity’s age expressed both in months (continuous variable) and in grouped intervals (year, half-year). In this way, attention was drawn to the benefits of continuous variable coding (rank and 0-1 coding). The research covered companies established during 1990-2010 in total (over 120 thousand) and in time periods resulting from the cyclical character of liquidation of companies (in accordance with the earlier research findings). The research showed that the risk of company liquidation decreases as the company grows older (the use of a continuous variable and a rank variable). On the other hand, the risk of subsequent age groups (using the 0-1 variable) prevents the risk from being monotonous.

The purpose of this article is the empirical verification of characteristics of innovation activity and innovation in service companies based on the results of the Community Innovation Survey. In the first part of the study the characteristics of services that determine the nature of innovation activity and innovation model in service companies are indicated. In the following part the empirical verification of these features, based on the results of the CIS for all EU countries, is carried out. Including into the study all EU countries gives a large number of observations, and it should be noted that the previous studies in this area have been conducted based on the data for the individual countries. The research method is to compare the innovative activities of industrial and service companies in the EU countries, which shows the possible differences in the nature of innovation activities of companies from both sectors. This allows to answer the question whether the innovative activities of service companies can be studied using the same tools that are used in industrial companies (assimilation approach) or to develop new methods for measuring innovative activity − (a) specific to service companies (demarcation approach) or (b) relating both to companies from both sectors (integration approach). In the article all the characteristics of innovation activity in service companies are positively verified. The exception is an interactive nature of innovation activities in service companies. It is important to pay attention to the data from the last two CIS rounds, from which we can find out that non-technological innovations are equally important in industrial companies, as well as in service companies, and both types of innovation are generally complementary to each other. It follows an interesting conclusion that it is impossible to make a simple distinction between technological innovation in industrial companies and non-technological one in service companies, and research on innovation activities should rather be based on an integration approach. Unfortunately, the dominance of assimilation approach in CIS makes innovative activities of service companies are still not thoroughly examined and fully recognized. Therefore, despite the positive changes in the quality of the data, which can be seen when comparing the results of the latest and possibly the oldest CIS rounds, further changes are necessary in this area. Proposals for such changes are indicated by the author.

The article focuses on the restructuring proces of productive decentralization of firms which took place in Italy in the 1970s, during which at country level and globally the formerly stable registered trends of fast economic growth, high capital accumulation and falling income inequalities became subverted, leading to a regime of slow growth, lower capital accumulation and growing income inequalities which currently prevails. Based mainly on the analysis of Italian literature, the paper aims to show how this restructuring process was first relevantly affected by changes in macroeconomic environment and then it significantly influenced the evolution of the very same macro-environment in which Italian firms operated. This reciprocal influence between firm restructuring and macroeconomic environment change therefore led to self-enhancing trends which, it can be argued, are still affecting, although partially, Italian economy even today. Thus it is argued that in the case of Italy, the productive decentralization process can be considered to be one of the most relevant factors supporting change in the macroeconomic trends occurring since the end of the 1970s. The conducted analysis can be also considered a useful case study of the reciprocal inter-linkages between firms’ restructuring processes and the macroeconomic environment evolution, which can take place in any economic system.

The aim of this article is to discern the crux of SME sector social responsibility in developing countries. An attempt is made to identify, empirically, the ethical standards subscribed to by small firms in Poland and to compare them with the standards of small firms in the UK. The methodology of empirical analysis of the ethical standards of Polish entrepreneurs running small businesses was modelled on Laura Spence’s research on the priorities, practices and ethics of small firms in the UK. This analysis has revealed certain similarities and significant differences in the way CSR is perceived by Polish and British entrepreneurs. British entrepreneurs manifest a higher degree of awareness with regard to the issue of social responsibility and are more strongly motivated by their external environment to take up social responsibility issues than Polish ones.

The Warsaw Stock Exchange  has been growing rapidly since its establishment. Privatization program undergone via the public market was one of the crucial factors that contributed to this growth. Currently, very few State-owned companies that might go public have left. The main goal of this article is to discuss the possibility that family firms will step into the State’s shoes and become a more meaningful source of new issuers for the WSE. This paper identifies reasons for possible increase in family firms listings on the WSE as well as key elements for that to happen.

Our study focuses on family farm firms as an important and yet under-researched type of family firms. We explore the entrepreneurial growth behavior in the context of family farm firms by focusing on the role of pluriactivity. By integrating the literature of family business strategies, EO, and growth intentions, this study of 1618 Finnish family farms seeks to understand the idea of pluriactivity as a strategic orientation of family farm firms leading towards the growth and renewal of their prevailing and future domains. Our study revealed that pluriactivity is associated with growth-orientation and perceived strengths of the family farm firms. We identified four types of growth groups (Established, Growth-Driven, Experimenters, Stand-Stills) and found differences in their pluriactive orientation. We suggest that pluriactivity as a strategic orientation affects the growth-intention of the family entrepreneurs and the business renewal processes of the family farm firms. Entrepreneurs need to have capabilities (knowledge, skills, experience) and willingness to change (motivation, attitude, volition) when using pluriactivity as a strategic orientation as they affect growth behavior (EO). Lastly, we discuss with our results and make some suggestions for future research avenues in family business strategy research.

Celem przeprowadzonych badań była budowa modelu czasu trwania firm handlowych dla poszczególnych powiatów województwa zachodniopomorskiego. Oszacowano estymator Kaplana‑Meiera oraz zastosowano test weryfikujący podobieństwo funkcji firm handlowych w powiatach. Utworzono grupy powiatów. Zbadano funkcję intensywności likwidacji firm w grupach. Porównano uszeregowania powiatów pod względem czasu trwania firm handlowych i firm ogółem. W badaniu wykorzystano dane z rejestru REGON, dotyczące firm powstałych w województwie zachodniopomorskim w latach 2009–2011 (21 powiatów). Obserwacja trwała do końca 2013 roku. Jest to sugestia zarówno dla decydentów, jak i dla przedsiębiorców, że prawdopodobieństwo likwidacji firmy handlowej jest większe niż innych firm. Działalność handlowa jest przeważająca (największy udział w nowych firmach) i najbardziej narażona na likwidację.
The aim of this study was to construct models of trading companies’ lifespan, in individual districts of Zachodniopomorskie Voivodship. The author verified whether the impact of the survival time of trading companies on the survival function in general is the same in individual districts. This may inform potential entrepreneurs’ decisions on whether to set up a trading or other company. The Kaplan‑Meier estimator was calculated and a tests verifying similarities of functions of trading companies within the districts was used. Districts were then divided into groups, according to trading companies’ lifespan. Further on, the functions of the intensity of companies’ liquidation for particular districts were analysed. The rankings of districts were compared in terms of the lifespan of trading companies and businesses in total. In the study, the author used REGON registry, containing data about companies established in Zachodniopomorskie Voivodship in 2009–2011. These entities were observed until the end of 2013. It is something to be considered by both decision makers and entrepreneurs, that the probability of liquidation of a trading company is greater than of any other company. Trading activity is prevailing (the highest percentage of all newly established companies are trading companies), however, trading companies are also most in danger of liquidation.

The Internet has completely transformed our lives on an individual basis in many ways, ranging from the way we communicate through the way we socialize to the way we shop and travel. Businesses are no exception to this premise. This paper studies the adoption of the Internet by female-owned firms in India. It uses the World Bank’s Enterprise Surveys Program data set for the year 2014 to study the adoption of the Internet by more than 10,000 firms in the country. After controlling for a large number of firm-level characteristics, empirical results obtained indicate that female-owned firms are more likely to use the Internet than their male counterparts. However, further empirical analysis shows that more intensive adoption of the Internet by these female-owned firms does not necessarily translate into better performance. Specifically, the adoption of the Internet does not make female-owned firms more or less likely to have better productivity and sales growth in contrast to that of their male counterparts.

Purposes of conducting family businesses are specific. Striving for survival and ensuring succession causes an aversion to risk and caution when undertaking development projects. Such an attitude is associated with capital structure that prefers internal financing sources. In the event of external financing foreign capital would be used in the first place. Family businesses rarely use private equity financing. A relatively lower risk for for their independence is related to mezzanine capital. Venture capital consitutes a threat of takeover. Private equity is convenient for ownership changes, especially for succession.
Przedsiębiorstwa rodzinne wykazują określoną specyfikę z punktu widzenia celów działalności. Dążenie do przetrwania i zapewnienia sukcesji powoduje zwiększoną awersję do ryzyka i ostrożność w podejmowaniu przedsięwzięć rozwojowych. Nastawienie takie prowadzi do preferowania struktury kapitałowej opartej w dużej mierze na wewnętrznych źródłach finansowania. W przypadku finansowania zewnętrznego w pierwszej kolejności stosowany jest kapitał obcy. Przedsiębiorstwa rodzinne sporadycznie korzystają z możliwości finansowania za pomocą private equity. Relatywnie mniejsze zagrożenie niezależności przedsiębiorstwa stwarza mezzanine capital. Venture capital niesie ze sobą ryzyko przejęcia przedsiębiorstwa. Private equity może być pomocny w przeprowadzaniu zmian własnościowych, a w szczególności sukcesji.

Purpose: Strategy determines the patterns of internationalization. The speed, scale, and scope of internationalization are important dimensions from the perspective of firms’ behaviors and activ ities. The aim of the article is to identify and verify the relationship between the international strategy and its impact on three dimensions of the studied phenomenon. Methodology: The article uses a quantitative approach. The survey was conducted on a sample of 355 internationalized firms from Poland, varying in size. Findings: The analysis with t test and U test (ANOVA) shows a correlation between a company’s international strategy as a planning instrument and the speed and scope of internationalization. Research limitations/implications: While considering a firm’s development, especially its inter national growth, one should plan the activities related to entering into foreign markets. The results presented in this article are just a starting point for further analyses. In an attempt to eliminate its limitations, further research should focus on building a comprehensive model that includes the remaining components of international strategy and other categories that stimulate international ization processes. Originality: The originality of this article lies in three elements: (i) the article comprehensively captures the scale, scope, and speed of internationalization at the same time, (ii) the strategy is introduced as a determining factor of the scale, scope, and speed of internationalization, and (iii) the article enriches empirical studies about emerging markets such as Poland.

Dążenie do maksymalizacji wartości przedsiębiorstwa jest uznawane za główny cel jego działalności. Wartość przedsiębiorstwa może być rozumiana jako wartość dla akcjonariuszy lub jako wartość dla interesariuszy. W pierwszym przypadku firmy koncentrują się głównie na realizacji celów o charakterze finansowym, w drugim zaś na dążeniu ku harmonijnej realizacji celów ekonomicznych i społecznych. Zwłaszcza ten drugi cel wydaje się charakterystyczny dla małych i średnich firm rodzinnych. W przedsiębiorstwach, które są nastawione na dynamiczny rozwój, przy jednoczesnej dbałości o stabilność rynkową zmierzającą do zapewnienia przyszłości następcom właściciela (sukcesja), przedsiębiorca odgrywa kluczową rolę. Celem opracowania jest analiza wybranych czynników wpływających na kreowanie wartości firmy rodzinnej w kontekście przedsiębiorczości właścicieli i zarządzających tymże podmiotem. Analiza ta została przeprowadzona na podstawie badań zrealizowanych na próbie małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw rodzinnych zlokalizowanych w regionie podkarpackim.
Striving to maximize the value of an enterprise is considered as the main goal of its activity. The value of an enterprise can be understood as a value for shareholders or as a value for stakeholders. In the first case, the companies focus mainly on the implementation of financial objectives, while in the second − on the pursuit of harmonious implementation of economic and social goals. The second goal seems to be characteristic for small and medium family businesses. In enterprises which are focused on dynamic development, while taking care of market stability aimed at ensuring the future of the owner’s successors (succession) − the entrepreneur plays a key role. The aim of the study is to analyze selected factors influencing the creation of family business value in the context of the entrepreneurship of the owners and managers. This analysis was carried out on the basis of research carried out on a sample of small and medium family enterprises located in the Podkarpackie region.

This paper compares the equilibrium outcomes under simultaneous and sequential output setting in a mixed duopoly in a vertically differentiated market. When the timing of the output game is determined endogenously, it is shown that simultaneous play in the quality stage with the public firm acting as the high-quality producer and simultaneous play in the second period in the output stage turn out to be the unique subgame perfect Nash equilibrium, which contrasts with the endogenous timing in a purely private duopoly.

Modern companies, operating in a dynamically changing environment, are subject to the permanent determinism of the institution. On the other hand, companies are more and more often perceived as complex networks of interpersonal relations in often dispersed organizational structures. Relationships seem to play the role of a link between human activities. The latter, being dependent on the level of his/her opportunism, limited rationality, uncertainty and defined costs of transaction execution within the company, take actions consistent with the company's goal. Man-made activities seem to be more and more often characterised by market transactions concluded within the frames of a company. The whole mechanism of company functioning cohabits under the influence of institutional determinism. Such a context of social and economic reality observed within the frame of the company has become a contribution to the emergence of the question which inspires the author's scientific work within the scope of the new institutional economics. What are the reasons for the existence of various forms of transaction organization and ways of their implementation within the company? The following article is an attempt to answer such a question in the context of the theory of institutions. The presented considerations, through the theoretical meanders of neo-institutionalism, ultimately lead to the localization of institutional determinism, which shapes the way transactions are carried out within the company.

Whereas the emergence of pyramid schemes exerted considerable impacts on people’s lives, up to now, far too little attention has been paid to the experiences of members from the sociological perspective, particularly in non-Western contexts. Therefore, this study illuminates social processes underlying participation in such schemes in a less studied social setting, Iran. This article also critically traces the social and psychological consequences of membership in pyramid schemes. We adapted a critical ethnographic approach, including participant observation of local branch offices, followed by 16 in-depth interviews with the former members of schemes. Our findings suggest that the practices deployed by the schemes lead to the building of social identity, namely, “superhuman,” mainly based on the misinterpretation of the real world. Finding the reality surrounded deliberately contrasted with the firms’ promises, the constructed identity fails, and members lose their social capital.

The aim of this article is to discern the crux of SME sector social responsibility in developing countries. An attempt is made to identify, empirically, the ethical standards subscribed to by small firms in Poland and to compare them with the standards of small firms in the UK. The methodology of empirical analysis of the ethical standards of Polish entrepreneurs running small businesses was modelled on Laura Spence’s research on the priorities, practices and ethics of small firms in the UK (Spence 2000). This analysis has revealed certain similarities and significant differences in the way CSR is perceived by Polish and British entrepreneurs. British entrepreneurs manifest a higher degree of awareness with regard to the issue of social responsibility and are more strongly motivated by their external environment to take up social responsibility issues than Polish ones.

Customer-centricity – a concept, a trend or an absolute must-have in a modern consumer market? The answer may seem clear, and that no further profound reflections are required. However, it is impossible to specify unambiguously the criteria that should be met by an organization to be considered a customer-centric enterprise. This doubt stimulated the analysis of the available sources in which numerous authors have taken up the topic of the customer and his strategic importance for supporting a wide range of businesses. I focus on five different business concepts that combine a qualitative approach to the customer. The article attempts to define the concept of customer-centricity, and I identify five different qualities that should be met by an organization so that it may call itself “customer-centric”.

XX wieku, a intensywny rozwój badań tego fenomenu rozpoczął się dekadę później i trwa do dzisiaj. Od kilku lat również w Polsce rośnie udział tzw. przedsiębiorstw born global, które rozpoczynają działalność na rynkach międzynarodowych wkrótce po utworzeniu. Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zagadnienia tempa procesu internacjonalizacji przedsiębiorstw z perspektywy dwóch głównych podejść teoretycznych oraz jego empiryczna weryfikacja. Artykuł obejmuje przegląd literatury przedmiotu oraz wyniki badań 263 umiędzynarodowionych przedsiębiorstw produkcyjnych działających w branżach zaawansowanych technologii na terytorium Polski. W podsumowaniu artykułu, wskazano na dalsze kierunki badań.
The discussion on the role and importance of time in the process of internationalization of firms belongs to the mainstream of research in the field of internationalization. In the literature, the phenomenon of early and rapid internationalization was noticed in the early 1980s; however, the intensive development of the research into this phenomenon began a decade later and continues today. For several years in Poland, the share of early internationalized firms has been growing. These firms start their international activities almost from their inception. The main objective of the article is to present the pace of the internationalization process of firms from the perspective of two major theoretical approaches and its empirical verification. The article includes the literature review as well as the results of a survey conducted among 263 high-tech production firms from Poland. In the summary of the article, future directions of research are pointed out.

Na przestrzeni ostatnich dwoch dekad w Wielkiej Brytanii znacznie wzrosło zainteresowanie przedsiębiorstwami społecznymi. Brytyjscy politycy zaczęli dostrzegać ich potencjał w tworzeniu i dostarczaniu usług dla społeczeństwa oraz pozytywny wpływ na rozwoj społeczno-ekonomiczny kraju. Wyzwania stojące przed rządzącą w latach 1997–2010 partią lewicową, a następnie obecną rządową koalicją konserwatywno-liberalną zaowocowały nowymi ideologicznymi rozwiązaniami mającymi na celu usprawnienie funkcjonowania państwa. Wzrosła m.in. rola organizacji pozarządowych oraz samej ludności w rozwiązywaniu lokalnych problemow. Na znaczeniu zyskała także koprodukcja, czyli wspołpraca między dostarczającymi usługi, a jej odbiorcami, traktowana jako nowy sposob rozwiązywania problemow państwa. Obecny kierunek brytyjskiej polityki sugeruje więc odejście od tzw. „państwa opiekuńczego” i formowanie „państwa umożliwiającego”, w ktorym obywatele angażują się w zaspokajanie społeczno-ekonomicznych potrzeb w innowacyjny sposob. Bazując na przykładzie Wielkiej Brytanii, artykuł ten odnosi się do uwarunkowań politycznych oraz ograniczeń związanych z funkcjonowaniem przedsiębiorstw społecznych w tym kraju. Ponadto artykuł prezentuje wyzwania, przed ktorymi stoją przedsiębiorstwa społeczne na terenie UK oraz nawiązuje do empirycznych wynikow jednego z projektow Unii Europejskiej, ktorego celem było przetestowanie koncepcji przedsiębiorstwa społecznego. Prowadzona dyskusja autorow nawiązuje do istotnych kwestii bytu i możliwości rozwoju przedsiębiorstw społecznych w omawianym państwie oraz kierunkow zmian, jakie muszą nastąpić, aby przedsiębiorstwa społeczne mogły się rozwijać.
In Great Britain within the period of last two decades the interest in social firm has significantly grown up. British politicians have become to acknowledge their potential in producing and delivering services for local community as well as their positive impact on socio-economic development of the country. The challenges facing Labour Party in 1997–2010 and the present Conservative-Liberal coalition have brought about new ideological solutions aiming to make more effective the functions of the state. The role of NGO’s and citizens in solving local problems has grown up. The co-production, that is co-operation between service deliverers and their receivers perceived as a new way to solve the problems of the state has become more important. The present trend in British policy suggests thus to withdraw from welfare state and to form enabling state, within which the citizens are involved in meeting their socio-economic needs in the innovative way. In the analysis of the Great Britain example the paper deals with political conditions and limitations related to the operation of social firms. The article also presents the challenges the British social firms face and recalls the empirical outcomes of the one of the EU project, which aimed to test the concept of social firm. The discussion of the authors touches the essential question of social firms existence and their opportunities to develop as well as the trends of change that have to be brought about in order to further develop social firms.

The process of beatification of Chiara Lubich was opened in January 2015. Lubich saw the poverty and privation of people. During her life led activity for other people. Lubich was the initiator of Focolare Movement recognized by the Catholic Church. In addition, she was the initiator of the Economy of Communion which is based on a number of rules. Through the project Economy of Communion Lubich wanted to give aid people. Finance management of firms Economy of Communion is different from the ethical finance management of firms. However, there are similarities between them. In literature, finance management of firms Economy of Communion does not relate to ethical finance management of firms. There is a gap in this area. Hence the autor's pro-posal fill this gap.

Quite often, people have negative views on government-linked companies (GLCs) due to the unsatisfactory performance of some key players. In order to improve the performance of GLCs in the country, Malaysian government implemented GLC Transformation Program (GLCT) in 2004. As the program is approaching its ending phase, some efforts are needed to assess the performance of GLCs. This study aimed to examine the influence of EO dimensions on the performance of GLCs. The sample of this study consisted of 153 subsidiaries and branches of G20. Based on the multiple regression analysis performed, this study found that all the five dimensions in EO, namely innovativeness (INNO), pro-activeness (PROA), risk-taking (RISK), competitive aggressiveness (COMP) and autonomy (AUTO) recorded significant positive effects on performance of GLCs. Competitive aggressiveness was identified as the most important factor that influences the performance of GLCs. As such, all the hypotheses developed for this study were supported. The results suggested that EO is not only suitable to be applied in privately owned companies, but also in GLCs. Hence, GLCs should not be perceived as public entities and they should be more entrepreneurial in managing their organizations to achieve high performance. Furthermore, this study also verified that EO is a good determinant of GLCs’ performance. At the end of this paper, recommendations for future research have been put forth.

The article focuses on the latest trends in the theory of international trade, which, according to the author, are relatively little known in Poland. Serwach sets out to show that the theoretical analysis of trade has evolved over the years toward purely microeconomic considerations. Referring to specific research reports, the paper describes the main directions of theoretical research today: a new theory of trade that takes into account the diversification of companies, a theory of trade conducted by multiproduct companies, and the so-called incomplete contract theory. Serwach shows that these new trends overlap and complement previously existing theories. The overview of the latest theories of international trade presented in the article prompts several conclusions. One of these is that many theoreticians focus on the relationship between a company’s productivity and its decision to go international with its business. The trends discussed in the article involve the problem of the significant role of fixed costs in shaping trade flows, the author says. Although the latest ideas make it possible to offer a theoretical explanation of many empirical phenomena in the trade of goods, Serwach says, these concepts have some limitations. These include the lack of in-depth modeling of demand and a tendency to ignore strategic interactions between firms.

This study examines the cooperation between high-technology firms and institutions aimed at supporting the development of enterprises, such as national agencies and public education institutions, in emerging markets. The research uses qualitative research methods—namely, multiple case studies. An empirical analysis was conducted in 26 high-tech enterprises from emerging market: Poland, including hyper-growth organizations. This study explores the support of the institutions as well as cooperation between firms and public institutions from a managerial perspective. The major problems and obstacles that these firms faced are identified, as are ways of coping with them. The research results extend existing studies by providing empirical insights from high-tech firms in one of the emerging markets in Central Europe.

As more and more societies are transforming into cashless economies, questions about the social nature of this transformation are arising. With this paper we present specific insights into the process of the institutionalization of cashlessness in Poland. The process is analyzed from the perspective of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). We advance the idea that the institutional field of cashlessness is emerging with similar pressures. In this field—as we argue using the concept of Powell and DiMaggio—SMEs experience a coercive institutional isomorphism. We show that the complex impact of interlocked social interactions, financial sanctions, narrations, values and norms are creating the matrix for SMEs’ decision whether to implement cashless payments into their business. The analysis is based on 74 individual in-depth interviews with SMEs owners. The paper is grounded in qualitative research design and the theory of neo-institutionalism.

Artykuł prezentuje zagadnienia odnoszące się do zjawiska niepowodzeń gospodarczych. W artykule zaprezentowano cechy małych firm utrudniające zarządzanie nimi, zidentyfikowano główne kryteria pozwalające wskazać przyczyny, problemy wtórne, symptomy oraz kryzysy w nich zachodzące. W dalszej części artykułu zawarto przegląd głównych ścieżek niepowodzeń gospodarczych małych firm. Na ich podstawie zidentyfikowano możliwość wpływu innowacyjności i innowacji na przeciwdziałanie niepowodzeniom gospodarczym. W ramach ścieżek niepowodzeń gospodarczych wskazano potencjalne możliwości wprowadzenia innowacji dla ograniczenia opisanego zjawiska. Zaprezentowane rozważania wskazują, że znaczącym punktem inicjującym przyszły proces przeciwdziałania temu zjawisku jest powiązanie innowacji ze składowymi występującymi w ścieżkach niepowodzeń gospodarczych, co pozwoli w dalszej kolejności zbudować i realizować strategię w tym zakresie.
The article presents the issues relating to the phenomenon of economic failures. The article presents the characteristics of small businesses hindering management, and identifies the main criteria indicating the reasons, consequential problems, symptoms and crises that occur in them. Then, the article provides an overview of the major paths of economic failures of small businesses. On their basis the opportunity to influence of innovation and innovation in tackling the economic failures was identified. Within the paths of economic failures the potential opportunities to introduce innovations to reduce this phenomenon were identified. The paper presented considerations suggesting that the significant point initiating the future process of preventing this phenomenon is to link innovation with the components occurring in the paths of economic failures which will, in turn, allow to build and implement the strategy in this regard.

Privatisation of security did not appear in the process of revolution. Under conditions of deepening international relations, as well as integration and globalisation processes, security of the state, as well as other entities, is subject to a number of dependencies. The article casts some doubt on how much states are prepared to take such actions, while not losing the attribute of monopoly on violence. Moreover, the article presents doubts about the ranks of modern armed forces. Private Military Firms (PMFs) are new actors the actions of which affect the security. The contemporary image of the PMF functioning is a phenomenon on a global scale. In the twenty-first century, small businesses can have a huge impact on the reality and international affairs. Leaving military firms without state control proves that they do not understand the dynamics, range, risks and challenges posed by cooperation with entities that are allowed to use force. Furthermore, despite devastating consequences that occurred during the state stabilisation operations, these firms continued to outsource services to contractors, while not creating any legal control over them.

Manufacturing firms continuously strive to increase the efficiency and effectiveness in the maintenance management processes. Focus is placed on eliminating the unexpected failures which cause unnecessary costs and the production losses. Risk-based maintenance (RBM) strategies enable to address the above through the identification of probability and consequences of potential failures whilst providing a way for prioritisation of maintenance actions based on the risk of possible failures. Such prioritisations enable to identify the optimal maintenance strategy, intervals of maintenance tasks, and optimal level of spare parts inventory. However, the risk assessment activities are performed with the support of a risk matrix. Suboptimal classifications and/or prioritisations arise due to the inherent nature of the risk matrix. This is caused by the fact that there are no means to incorporate actual circumstances at the boundary of the input ranges or at the levels of linguistic data and risk categories. In this paper, a risk matrix is first developed in collaboration with one of the manufacturing firms in Poland. Then, it illustrates the use of fuzzy logic for minimisation of suboptimal prioritisation and/or classifications using a fuzzy inference system (FIS) together with illustrative membership functions and a rule base. Finally, an illustrative risk assessment is also demonstrated to illustrate the methodology.

An increasing influence of families in firms is associated with lower professionalisation. A less professionalized firm might not be able to exploit the benefits of elaborate accounting functions that are fundamental for effective decision-making and control. Yet, it is unclear to date if higher family influence leads to less differentiated and professionalized accounting functions and hence less effective decision-making and control. We test this proposition based on survey data with Bayesian regressions and interaction effects. We find evidence that the impact of family on professionalisation is particularly pronounced in smaller firms, and the effect decreases with the firm's size. This indicates that family influence and professionalisation have more significant impact on the use of accounting instruments and less impact on the differentiaiton of accounting functions, except for smaller family firms.

In our paper, a stochastic model of forecasting of the numer of firms of a given type, acting on the market in a given year, is proposed. The model uses the probabilistic tools of the theory of branching processes. Our approach is an alternative method to the forecasting methods proposed so far, including those based on time series. The theoretical results presented in the paper may be applied in the forecasting of the market position of the firms of a given sector.

Opis:
This article presents the concept of family governance based on the experience gained in the Roleski firm (the Constitution of Roleski family firm established in 2010) and the Łapaj firm (the Inheritance Statute of the Łapaj Group, 2011). The family governance has evolved from the corporate governance by taking into account the specific interaction of a family with a firm which manifests itself mainly in respecting family values. Based on experiences gained in both firms the process of building family governance was presented. It may be used by other family firms in implementing similar solutions that may help them to maintain the long-lasting development.
Artykuł omawia koncepcję ładu przedsiębiorstwa rodzinnego w oparciu o doświadczenia zdobyte w firmach Roleski (Konstytucja firmy rodzinnej Roleski, 2010) oraz Łapaj (Statut dziedzictwa grupy Łapaj, 2011). Ład przedsiębiorstwa rodzinnego wyewoluował z nadzoru korporacyjnego poprzez uwzględnienie specyfiki oddziaływania rodziny na biznes, przejawiającej się przede wszystkim w respektowaniu wartości rodzinnych. W oparciu o zdobyte doświadczenia w wyżej wymienionych firmach, omówiony został proces tworzenia ładu przedsiębiorstwa rodzinnego, który może posłużyć innym firmom rodzinnym we wdrożeniu podobnego narzędzia i w efekcie przyczynić się do ich długotrwałego rozwoju.

Celem przeprowadzonych badań była budowa modelu trwania firm dla poszczególnych powiatów województwa zachodniopomorskiego. Pierwszym etapem było oszacowanie estymatora Kaplana‑Meiera oraz zastosowanie testu weryfikującego podobieństwo funkcji przeżycia dla powiatów. Utworzono grupy powiatów. Następny etap badań to budowa tablic trwania firm i analiza funkcji intensywności likwidacji firm w grupach powiatów. Następnie przedstawiono odsetek firm zlikwidowanych po dwóch latach działalności w poszczególnych powiatach (etap III). Przeprowadzono także analizę współzależności między odsetkiem zlikwidowanych w badanym okresie firm i liczbą zarejestrowanych podmiotów na 10 tys. ludności w powiatach (IV etap). W badaniu wykorzystano dane z rejestru REGON, dotyczące firm powstałych w województwie zachodniopomorskim w latach 2009–2011 (21 powiatów). Obserwacja trwała do końca 2013 roku. Wyniki badań pozwoliły wskazać na zróżnicowanie modeli trwania firm w powiatach województwa zachodniopomorskiego. Utworzono pięć grup powiatów i scharakteryzowano je.
The aim of the study was to construct models of firms’ survival duration for individual poviats in the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship. The first stage was the calculation of the Kaplan‑Meier estimator and the use of a test for the verification of similarities in the survival function for the analysed poviats. As a result, groups of poviats were created. The next stage of research was the construction of duration tables of the studied firms and an analysis of the intensity function of firms’ liquidation for the poviats. The percentage of firms liquidated after two years of activity in different poviats (stage III) was presented. An analysis of correlation between the percentage of firms liquidated in the analysed period and the number of entities registered per 10 thousand of population in the poviats (stage IV) was also conducted. This study used data from the registry of REGON related to companies established in the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship in 2009–2011. These entities were observed till the end of 2013. The study results reveal the differentiation of firm survival models in the poviats of the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship. Five groups of poviats were distinguished and characterised.

The major purpose of this research paper is to examine supply chain management practices as a strategic tool for third-party logistics firms’ performance: by presenting practical and theoretical advantages by reviewing the corresponding literature, and also by proposing more forward-looking studies. A literature review was developed to help today's supply chain managers and analysts to thoroughly scrutinize what was already recognized as well as what requires further research. The research broadens, from a centered company perspective, the understanding of supply chain management practices as a tactical resource for success of third party logistics firms, as well as limitations for future studies. This research paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the literature to develop a proposed general framework for a strategic tool research initiative to perform TPLs' supply chain management practices. The research paper provides perspectives into deficiencies in current practices of supply chain management, along with the progress of third party logistics sector literature. The research paper proposes specific research into the logistics process, as it relates to planned and current performance. The research paper makes a series of important literary contributions. First, it provides the first comprehensive analysis of the fundamental concepts used throughout the current supply chain management activities research in relation to the performance of third party logistics companies. Indeed, when carrying out a similar exercise, the approach used to conduct the systematic literature review may be used as a guide for future investigators. Current research is aimed at providing a researcher who meets the needs of modern business leaders.

The article presents the research results on the relationship between family involvement and innovation of family firms and their economic performance. The following criteria were used to measure family involvement: participation of family members in the company’s management, participation in ownership, presence of family members among the company’s employees, and the act of carrying out succession. Based on the analysis of the collected data from Polish family businesses, it was found that family involvement positively influences the company’s performance. However, the relationship between family involvement and firm innovativeness, measured by the number of implemented product innovations, was statistically insignificant. The study’s findings confirm the complexity of family businesses and the ambiguous nature of family influence on family business.

Research background: Firms' innovation activities play an important role in fostering firms' competitiveness and enhancing economic growth of regions and countries. Regarding the significance of the issue, it is essential to explore indicators of firms' innovation activities. Here, special attention was given to external linkages and intellectual assets. In the study, particular emphasis was put on firms from the Czech Republic and Poland as the countries distinguished by similar innovation performance. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to explore whether external link-ages and intellectual assets impact on innovation activities of Czech and Polish firms. Methods: In the study, the Cobb-Douglas function was employed. The study used data from the European Innovation Scoreboard 2018 with regard to firms' innovation activities. In particular, special stress was put on variables related to external linkages and intellectual assets such as: innovative SMEs collaborating with others, private co-funding of public R&D expenditures, PCT patent applications and trademark applications. The time period was 2008-2015. Findings & Value added: This paper contributes to the existing literature by providing new insight on issues connected with indicators of firms' innovation activities. The results reveal statistical significance of selected variables connected with external linkages and intellectual assets on innovation activities of Czech and Polish firms. These findings have policy and practical implications. There is a need to further stimulate, among others, the linkages between firms and universities, research organisations, institutional environment.
