Opis:
The present mixed-method study examined the foci and effects of peer and machine feedback on the revisions of Chinese university EFL learners’ English argumentative essays. The data included Draft 1, peer feedback (PF), PF-based Draft 2, machine feedback (MF), MF-based feedback, questionnaires, and interview recordings. The main findings were: (a) peer feedback was primarily concerned with content errors, while machine feedback mainly involved non-content errors, (b) significant differences occurred in errors of most types between Draft 1, PF and PF-based Draft 2, and between Draft 1, MF, and MF-based Draft 2, (c) the intake of ‘introducing a new topic in Conclusion’ was a powerful predictor of PF-based Draft 2 scores, and (d) the participants generally moderately considered peer and machine feedback to be useful. Based on the findings, some implications are discussed on how to better implement and enhance the quality of peer and machine feedback.

Making mistakes is a natural part of learning process requiring correction; accordingly, corrective feedback is indispensable. On this ground, the present study compared the effects of mobile-mediated explicit and implicit corrective feedback on Iranian EFL learners’ use of English prepositions of manner and movement. To this end, the participants including 60 learners were randomly assigned to three groups of 20 individuals on WhatsApp application. These three groups included two experimental and one control groups. The treatment groups sat for a pre-test, received instruction on the errors under study, and practiced correcting them in response to the corrective feedback condition. Next, participants took immediate post-test and delayed post-test. The statistical analysis revealed that although the control group was more proficient than its experimental counterparts on the pre-test, their performance did not improve on immediate and delayed post-tests. However, both of the experimental groups significantly improved on immediate post-test and retained their gains on the delayed post-test. The pedagogical implication is provided for both teachers and learners.

The role of corrective feedback in second language classrooms has received considerable research attention in the past few decades. However, most of this research has been conducted in English-teaching settings, either ESL or EFL. This study examined teacher feedback, learner uptake as well as learner and teacher perception of feedback in an adult Chinese as a foreign language classroom. Ten hours of classroom interactions were videotaped, transcribed and coded for analysis. Lyster and Ranta’s (1997) coding system involving six types of feedback was initially used to identify feedback frequency and learner uptake. However, the teacher was found to use a number of additional feedback types. Altogether, 12 types of feedback were identified: recasts, delayed recasts, clarification requests, translation, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation, explicit correction, asking a direct question, repetition, directing question to other students, re-asks, and using L1-English. Differences were noted in the frequency of some of the feedback types as well as learner uptake compared to what had been reported in some previous ESL and EFL studies. With respect to the new feedback types, some led to noticeable uptake. As for the students’ and teacher’s perceptions, they did not match and both the teacher and the students were generally not accurate in perceiving the frequency of each feedback type. The findings are discussed in terms of the role of context in affecting the provision and effectiveness of feedback and its relationship to student and teacher perception of feedback.

The study examined the types of written corrective feedback given by second language writing teachers on Taiwanese secondary school students’ collocation errors. First, the written corrective feedback that teachers provided on learners’ word choice errors was examined to uncover the types of feedback provided. Then, analysis focused on verb–noun collocations to draw attention to how students had been receiving different types of written corrective feedback from teachers on a single collocation error type. Results showed that some sentences tagged as including word choice errors only contained rule-based errors. Furthermore, for verb-noun collocation errors, teachers chose to provide indirect and direct feedback almost equally at the expense of metalinguistic feedback. Based on the results, we suggested options for second language writing teachers when providing feedback on word choice errors.

In Higher Education, feedback is still largely implemented as an external teacher-centred practice, which has been found to be irrelevant in improving students’ language learning. This paper advocates that internal, or self-generated feedback, has a potential role to play in learners’ formative processes under the condition that it is implemented as a task-based activity enhanced by suitable technological tools. In an experimental study, learners were engaged in the task of creating screencasts, or digital audio-visual recordings, of oral medical reports for authentic professional purposes. The study surveyed the kind of knowledge restructuring processes learners activated as a result of self-generated feedback enhanced by screencast technology. It also sought to understand learners’ perceptions of the experience. Results show that learners used different digital tools for knowledge restructuring leading to readjustment of their initial performances. Screencasts were thus effective in heightened learners’ awareness of the gap between their current weaknesses and their expected goals and in taking necessary action to narrow this gap. Learner perceptions further recorded a positive impact of self-generated feedback enhanced by screencasts, suggesting major motivation and interest in learning.

The feedback passed on by teachers as viewed by secondary school pupilsFeedback is a necessary element in the process of education and development. The efficiency of feedback depends on the way it is passed on: constructively (e.g. positive comment, constructive criticism indicating how one should improve their behaviour) or destructively (e.g. labeling,  destructive criticism, negative opinion without any additional comment, or generalisation). This article contains the results of research based on the opinions expressed by secondary school pupils (N = 250) on the subject of the ways in which teachers pass their feedback in two types of situations: connected with education and school behaviour. FN questionnaire including 16 situations (8 educational and 8 connected with school behaviour) was applied in the research, presenting pupils’ positive or negative behaviour. To each of the situations 5 possible types of teacher feedback were presented. The pupils’ task was to indicate which type of feedback they received (came across) most often, and what kind of feedback they would like to receive. The main aim of the research was to (1) check what kind of feedback predominated in the teacher-pupil communication, (2) obtain the data about possible divergences between the actual state and expected one in the process of communication between pupils and teachers.

Feedback is one of the essential elements in the writing classroom. With its two forms, teacher and peer, feedback can help students modify their essays to produce better later drafts. However, the practice of feedback in class does not go without some drawbacks on both the teacher and students’ side. This paper tries to demonstrate by reference to recent studies how the use of electronic feedback can aid in providing a better environment for feedback that can, consequently, result in better essays by the students. The paper presents some classroom practices regarding the use of electronic feedback.

The article discusses ways in which individuals respond to feedback received in the coaching process. In the first part, the author discusses different response styles to feedback and their consequences. She focuses especially on the defensive, dominating, manipulative, and improvement-oriented behaviors of the coached. In the second part, she addresses psychological determinants of effective feedback reception by the coaching participants, including their dispositional determinants. The author concludes emphasizing that for the coached to correct their behavior, the provision of feedback by coaches must be founded on the knowledge of the mechanisms and the dispositional determinants of human functioning.

This study investigated the impact of two types of corrective feedback in computer-mediated communicative context on the development of learners’ second language (L2) knowledge: (1) implicit feedback in the form of recast, and (2) explicit feedback in the form of metalinguistic feedback. The participants of this study, 45 low intermediate learners of English, were randomly divided into two experimental groups and one control group. The experimental groups completed two computer-mediated focused tasks activities about the target structure in the study. During task-based interaction via text-chat, the learners received focused corrective feedback when an error was made with the target form. Acquisition was measured by means of the two tests: computerized fill-in-the-blank test and oral imitation test. The results showed that the experimental groups who received computer-mediated corrective feedback outperformed the control group who did not receive any feedback. The findings also indicated metalinguistic feedback is more effective than recast feedback in computer-mediate communicative context.

The same life cycle happens with video games: they are valuable in many ways, they are far more developed than they were twenty years ago, and they have even reached a stage where we can find art in them. But how can they be art? Is the answer in the story or in the audiovisual elements?

This equation is a discretization of the well-studied differential delay equation $ x′(t) = f(x(t − 1)). $ We examine explicit families of such equations for which we can find, for infinitely many values of N and appropriate parameter values, various dynamical behaviors including periodic solutions with large numbers of sign changes per minimal period, solutions that do not converge to periodic solutions, and chaos. We contrast these behaviors with the dynamics of the limiting differential equation. Our primary tool is the analysis of return maps for the difference equations that are conjugate to continuous self-maps of the circle.

Centre of gravity represents the point where the net force of gravity of all the body parts is applied. Balance is a specific state of the postural control system, being a vertical orientation of human body maintained through balancing the forces and moments of forces that act on the body. Stability is understood to mean the ability to recover the state of balance and typical body position in the space. The concept of division of the rider's posture into 5 blocks that has been used in the literature seems to be legitimate. However, due to the natural shape of spinal curvature, the division of body into opposing truncated pyramids (a trapezoid in the sagittal plane and a rectangle with longer horizontal sides in the frontal plane) appears to be more accurate. The eight-segment model is dynamic and illustrates all the shallowed or deepened spinal curvatures very well while maintaining alternate sagittal curvatures with regard to the deficits of motion in the joints. It is also correct in anatomical terms since it contains all the sections and joints in the kinematic chain. Body posture, considered under conditions of the equestrian pair (a rider and a horse) as a motor task, will be adjusted using the continuous control. This control works within the tracking system and consistently adjusts the activity of different muscles to current needs. These needs result from a specific program encoded in the central nervous system and, more specifically, from the difference between the program and current state of the equestrian pair. This program is developed during equestrian training and it represents a demanded situation.

We consider chaotic motions of a portal frame structure under non-ideal loading. To suppress this chaotic behavior, a controlling scheme is implemented. The control strategy involves application of two control signals and nonlinear feedforward control to maintain a desired periodic orbit, and state feedback control to bring the system trajectory into the desired periodic orbit. Additionally, the control strategy includes an active magneto-rheological damper to actuate the system. The control force of the damper is a function of the voltage applied in the coil of the damper that is based on the force given by the controller.

This study explored the effect of computer-mediated corrective feedback on the 10th grade EFL students’ performance in the writing skill. Seventy-two 10th grade female students at Al Hammra secondary school for girls situated in Mafraq (Jordan) were selected as the study sample. They were randomly assigned into four groups, three experimental groups (18 in each) and one control group (18 students). The three experimental groups were taught using the computer-mediated corrective feedback modes including teachers’ feedback (students who received feedback only from the teacher), students’ feedback (students who provided and received feedback from their peers), and both (students who received and provided feedback from students and teacher). The control group was taught using computer-mediated communication. However, it neither provided nor received corrective feedback. Findings of the study reveal that there were significant differences between the mean scores of the control group and the experimental groups due to the method of teaching in favor of the experimental groups which received corrective feedback. Furthermore, the findings revealed that there was a significant effect for the mean scores between teachers’ feedback, students’ feedback or both, in favor of both where students received corrective feedback from their peers and the teacher.

In a short period of time, Ukrainians became the second largest foreign community living in Portugal. Without historical ties linking the two countries, the ‘migration industry’ as well as positive feedback and assistance provided through pioneers’ social networks were decisive for the constitution and rapid expansion of the flow. However it slowed down in only few years and the economic crisis affecting Portugal since 2008 has introduced new limits to a possible future expansion. The goal of the paper is to provide insights with respect to the evolution of the flow, particularly looking at mechanisms of assistance and feedback provided and received within social networks, including the role of the ‘migration industry’. We explored quantitative and qualitative data collected through questionnaires applied to 306 Ukrainians and interviews conducted with 31 Ukrainians in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area in 2011 and 2012. The research confirms the importance of assistance received through social networks at different stages of the preparation of the move, upon arrival and throughout the settlement process in Portugal. We conclude that negative opinions on the present economic opportunities in Portugal have replaced initial positive perceptions about labour market opportunities and this information is being transmitted through social networks to Ukrainians back in Ukraine. We suggest that the significant decrease of the inflow can probably be explained by negative feedback and a more limited willingness to assist the migration of others. Future trends in the migratory flow of Ukrainian citizens to Portugal as well as the permanence of these immigrants in the country are uncertain. On the one hand, migrants are struggling to live through the crisis, while the recent social upheaval in Ukraine pushes them to leave.

This study sought to examine the effectiveness of two categories of feedback, namely recasts and prompts. Also, the study focused on the relationship between subsets of each feedback type and the extent to which they led to learner uptake and repair in an EFL context. Data were collected through non-participant observations of three intact upper-intermediate EFL classes where 36 hours of interactions among 59 students and three teachers were audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed in terms of pre-specified coding systems that addressed four different subtypes of prompts – clarification requests, repetitions, elicitations, and metalinguistic clues – and two recast subtypes – explicit and implicit recasts. Data analysis showed that among prompts, clarification requests led to the highest percentage of uptake whereas elicitations were associated with the highest repair percentage. As for recasts, more explicit ones led to higher percentages of uptake and repair. The results of the study may contribute to a more in-depth understanding of the patterns of uptake and repair in an EFL context. The study confirms the role of feedback explicitness in such a context.

In Continuum Physics, general balance problems between internal fluxes and external sources are considered, mostly on some domain Ω called a material body. Typically, the fluxes are determined by a wanted field – the solution or configuration of the body, possibly augmented by derivatives or other suitable quantities specifying the state of the system. In order to obtain a closed problem formulation, initial and boundary conditions need to be provided as well. In this paper, we discuss some issues appearing in the case that the sources, e.g. forces in a mechanical problem, are not known in advance, but related to the wanted configuration in terms of values and/or derivatives of the solution. An analogy between thermodynamic and mechanical problems is shown.

The dynamics of the multiobserver gives an estimation of the successive derivatives of the output and the output of the multiobserver is a set that approximates the whole class of states that are indistinguishable from the current state of the original system by the control applied to the system. The dynamics of the multiobserver is used to stabilize the system with the aid of output feedback. It is done under the assumption that the system is state-feed back stabilizable and the functions used in this feedback depend smoothly on the output function and its Lie derivatives.

The observation inflation effect consists in the fact that observing an action being performed can create false memories that this action has actually been performed by the observer. The present study examined the relationship between this effect and interrogative suggestibility. A procedure based on the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale was used to assess two kinds of suggestibility: the tendency to yield to suggestive questions (Yield) and the tendency to change answers after feedback (Shift). The participants first watched a film depicting a woman performing simple activities and performed various activities themselves during the film. In order to determine whether the observation inflation effect occurred, the participants performed a source-monitoring test. The observation inflation effect was replicated. Observation inflation correlated positively with Yield but not with Shift. This pattern of results can be explained by the fact these two indicators are different aspects of interrogative suggestibility. Shift is more related to social influence, while Yield is more cognitive in its nature.

This paper presents an (infinite-dimensional) geometric framework for control systems, based on infinite jet bundles, where a system is represented by a single vector field and dynamic equivalence (to be precise: equivalence by endogenous dynamic feedback) is conjugation by diffeomorphisms. These diffeomorphisms are very much related to Lie-Bäcklund transformations. It is proved in this framework that dynamic equivalence of single-input systems is the same as static equivalence.

This paper reports on two ways in which success and failure can be operationalized and quantified in a non-institutional L2 learning context such as language tandem setting. We draw on the SITAF database, where we gathered 25 hours of video-recorded conversations held by 21 pairs, each consisting of a native speaker of English and a native speaker of French. The tandems performed collaborative tasks in both languages, thus giving each participant ample opportunity to be both the ‘expert’ and the ‘novice’ (learner) part of the dialogue. The tandem partners met regularly and autonomously outside of the recording sessions, and making progress in their L2 was one of their declared goals. Two possible measures of success in achieving this goal are: (1) the quality and quantity of learner uptake which followed the expert’s corrective feedback (CF) during the recorded conversations. Significant differences between the two L1 groups were observed: while 52% of the CF given by the native French speakers met with total uptake, over 52% of the English CF generated no uptake at all; (2) the participants’ own narratives of progress, as both the experts and the learners, obtained through questionnaires they filled out at the end of the program. Our study aims to contribute to the discussion on the stakes of successful L2 informal learning (with a focus on the acquisition of L2 pronunciation) by adopting a perspective which combines learners’ spoken output data and learners’ perceptions of their own language learning activity.

This study aims to explore teachers’ peer feedback behaviour in online teaching practice classes. Qualitative research was conducted on 32 physics teachers who conducted a teacher professional curriculum. Data were gathered through interviews, observations, and online discourse archives. Six steps were taken in analysing the data: preparing and organising data, exploring data, developing themes, representing findings, interpreting findings, and validating the accuracy of the findings. The results showed that peer feedback behaviour focused on learning design content and teachers’ performance. Peer feedback connects teachers’ ideas with those of their colleagues, open-mindedness, and encourages reflective thinking. This study realises peer feedback is a mutual dialogue to enhance teachers’ pedagogical competence in teacher professional curricula.

The average time to complete a crossword puzzle at the pretest was compared to the average time to complete the same puzzle at the posttest. The results showed that students given possible crossword puzzles were able to make significant improvements in the speed with which they could complete the puzzle at the posttest stage. However, such improvements in performance were not seen among the students who had been temporarily primed into a fixed mindset during the experiment through the use of the impossible crossword puzzles. Reasons behind these results as well as pedagogical implications related to effective ways of giving praise and other feedback will be discussed.

The paper deals with the steady-state response of a feedback control system to the canonical inputs. For its characterization it seems useful to introduce the notion of accuracy index mi beside the standard notion of loop type v. This index is assumed to be equal to the power of t in the analytic expression of the canonical input that leads to a finite nonzero deviation between the actual and the desired responses. When applied in the control design procedure, the accuracy index mi allows to achieve a steady-state performance that is more satisfactory than the one obtainable with reference to the loop type only. The conditions under which a single-loop feedback control system exhibits a prescribed value of mi, given the value of v, are derived and discussed with particular regard to their robustness.

In the recent years, noise control has become a significant factor in the design of automotive and aircraft industries. In general, methods of the passive noise control are practical and most effective at mid and high frequencies. On the other hand, active noise control techniques are more efficient at the low frequency range. Combined solutions seem to be the most appropriate key to cover the whole frequency range of frequencies. In the present study, a description of simulations for both feedback structural and acoustical structural control strategies are illustrated in order to maximize the damping within an acoustic duct by applying a passive foam layer bonded to an “active” surface.

A substantial number of studies have examined the effects of grammar correction on second language (L2) written errors. However, most of the existing research has involved unidirectional written feedback. This classroom-based study examined the effects of oral negotiation in addressing L2 written errors. Data were collected in two intermediate adult English as a second language classes. Three types of feedback were compared: nonnegotiated direct reformulation, feedback with limited negotiation (i.e., prompt + reformulation) and feedback with negotiation. The linguistic targets chosen were the two most common grammatical errors in English: articles and prepositions. The effects of feedback were measured by means of learner-specific error identification/correction tasks administered three days, and again ten days, after the treatment. The results showed an overall advantage for feedback that involved negotiation. However, a comparison of data per error types showed that the differential effects of feedback types were mainly apparent for article errors rather than preposition errors. These results suggest that while negotiated feedback may play an important role in addressing L2 written errors, the degree of its effects may differ for different linguistic targets.

Though there are many strategies to control single-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) inverters, they suffer from some drawbacks, the main being complexity. This paper proposes a simple dual-loop controller for the single-phase UPS inverter with the LC filter. The suggested control scheme uses the capacitor current as the feedback signal in the inner current loop. No fictitious phase generation or reference frame transformations are required, and simple proportional gains are employed as both voltage and current regulators. A feedforward of the derivative of the output voltage is also proposed, which significantly improves the performance of the closed loop control system. Then, based on the model of the inverter with the proposed control strategy, a simple and systematic design procedure is presented. Finally, the theoretical achievements are supported by extensive simulations.

During their last graduate year, Sociology students of the University of Minho are expected to design a full research project and to conduct exploratory research, completed by the last semester, and this includes either a residence period or a research seminar. To ensure this works well, methodology units are organised on a weekly basis, according to two types of classes: 1) theoretical and 2) theoretical-practical, with the purpose of gradually enabling students to develop the competencies they will need to graduate. Focusing on the teaching experience of qualitative methodologies, and using as an example the teaching of observation techniques, the purpose of this article is to illustrate the advantages of offering the students early contact with the “field”, and prepare them for future full-scale research. These advantages are acknowledged by students, as evidenced in their written evaluations of their field experiences. However, it is important to note that this type of learning is most fruitful when students have been previously trained in the use of the written language – namely aiming to develop their ability to describe – and social theories.

VIPP-SD
Opis:
This article will introduce a new method that has been available in Poland since 2015, based on video recordings, for families with children up to 5 years of age - the Video-feedback Intervention to promote Positive Parenting and Sensitive Discipline (VIPP-SD) (Juffer, Bakermans-Kranenburg, van IJzendoorn, 2008). The authors first discuss the current framework of development support psychology in Poland. Next, there is a review of methods based on video training. General information about the VIPP-SD intervention program is presented in the following part of the paper, focusing on international evidence-based studies supporting the effectiveness of the method. The need for a cultural adaptation and implementation of the VIPP-SD program in Poland is outlined.

The paper considers the problem of ship autopilot design based on Bech’s model of the vessel. Since the model is highly nonlinear and some of the state vector coordinates are unavailable, the control system synthesis is performed by means of an output feedback linearization method combined with a nonlinear observer. The asymptotic stability of the overall system has been proven, including the asymptotic stability of the system internal dynamics. The performed simulations of the ship course-changing process have confirmed a high performance of the proposed controller. It has been emphasized that for its practical usability the system robustification is necessary.

Automated Writing Evaluation programs have been used extensively to assist both L2 instructors and learners to get corrective feedback and to score students’ final product of writing. Research has found that the AWE programs help in optimizing the writing output. However, little is known about the hybrid mode; use of AWE involving the evaluation of both modes instructors and the AWE program. This paper studies the effects of both modes in developing the students’ writing outputs using a small case study of 6 EFL learners. The learners were exposed to both modes where in each mode they undertook two sessions using the program. In the first phase the learners wrote an essay via MY Access and then saved their input in the program. In the second session, they revised their essays based on the feedback given from the program. In the hybrid mode, the same students in the second session revised their input as per the instructor’s feedback and then continued submitting their essays via MY Access. Results found that under the hybrid condition students significantly outscored the learners with the AWE program. Keywords: automated writing evaluation; corrective feedback; writing; hybrid

Conventional boost converters are widely used for connecting low-voltage power sources and inverters in motor control. However, a large filter capacitor bank is often used to reduce DC-link ripples that occur when an inverter is connected to a boost converter. Otherwise, significant voltage and current perturbations can impact on battery performance degradation and cause torque ripple, speed ripple and vibration in brushless DC (BLDC) motors. To suppress the converter’s DC-link ripple, this paper proposes a new control strategy for boost converter controller to generate low-ripple DC-link voltage or current at different motor speeds. In the proposed method, observers are designed to adaptively estimate the DC-link voltage and current harmonics. The harmonic terms are used as feedback signals to calculate the DC converter’s duty cycle. The entire control model is implemented on an embedded system, and its robustness is verified by simulation and experimental results that show the DC-link voltage and current ripples can be reduced by about 50% and 30%, respectively.

How can one encourage the development of professional skills in a university subject? How can one use a blog to improve teaching results? These questions motivated the study presented in this article. It is structured around the following two basic and complementary objectives: 1. Designing and implementing a teaching innovation project to promote the development of certain professional skills, using the blog as a tool for self-reflection and 2. Evaluating the experience and collecting students’ comments on the use of the blog in a university context. In pursuit of the second objective, we used a methodology that combined a questionnaire and content analysis. The results make us reflect on the changes that should be introduced in the design of the learning activities and the provision of feedback to utilise the blog as a tool to promote the development of professional skills.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of emotions and some personality traits on translation performance. It builds on Rojo and Ramos’s (2016) findings and is broadly based on their methodology, but introduces some methodological changes. It replicates their experiment with translation students in another language pair (English L2>Macedonian L1) following their three step procedure: resiliency test, translation-bogus feedback-translation, self-reporting questionnaire. Following their recommendations (ibid.), the change in methodology involves using comparatively easier translation tasks. The paper aims to provide answers as to: the effect of positive and negative emotions on overall translation performance; the effect of positive and negative emotions on different aspects of translation performance (accuracy vs. creativity) and the role of the personality trait of resilience in regulating negative emotions.

The aim of the paper is to answer the question of what is the role of Feedback in the process of learning English as a foreign language. Feedback is an important element of student-teacher interaction in the classroom. Even experienced teachers admit that it is beneficial to put oneself in the student’s position in order to understand their individual needs, and hence adjust the instruction, assessment and feedback moves to aid language acquisition. Since errors are an unavoidable part of the learning process and teachers feel compelled to address students’ spoken errors, it seems significant to consider how the learners perceive the feedback they receive.

Assessment in translator education can sometimes be regarded as a necessary evil, either by trainees who tend to dislike evaluations of their competence and performance or by trainers who are obliged to measure and judge these elusive qualities. This authoritative role imposed on the translation teacher by various institutional regulations interferes with the image of the teacher as a guide postulated by the idea of empowerment (Kiraly 2000, 2005), since it might affect the distribution of power and control in the translation classroom. Grades assigned to translation assessment can hardly reflect the actual quality of the trainee translator’s work, let alone help them improve the necessary skills that translation competence entails. However, when accompanied by constructive feedback, the necessary evil cannot only be justified but also excused or even fostered. The author advocates transforming training-based assessment into assessment-based training. In as much as the translation teacher organises, controls and evaluates the students’ performance, a premise of equal importance is that assessment can also have a measurable effect on student competence development. As Fowler (2007: 254) claims, “the competence development in translators mainly derives from formative assessment”. With this presupposition in mind, the article will introduce the basic tenets of formative assessment with a close look given to its features and principles that should be observed with the aim of giving objective and effective feedback. Then, the roles of the trainer and the trainee will be discussed in relation to the distribution of power and control in the translation classroom and the position of the evaluator and the evaluee. The article will give an example of instrument that the evaluee needs in order to become the evaluator and, finally, it will demonstrate a methodology for formative assessment based on a few formative feedback techniques.

This paper contributes to the enhancing of a comparative study on the creative implementation of teaching methods in physical education sessions. We aim to determine the evolution of teacher representations related to the understanding of the particular practice of pole vaulting and its teaching by integrating a computer-video element into an educational environment. This study was carried out in two graduate classes of high school including (N = 44) students. These are two groups aged between 15 and 18 (One group of students was provided with verbal and gestural communication, while the other was asked to view a video). The pole vault learning cycle consisted of 14 sessions, divided between two sessions per week. The findings were consistent with the difference between methods of teaching in line with the respective tasks. Through this experiment and feedback from the lessons, we have been able to conclude that the use of Computer Communication Technology and specifically of the element of video footage, contributed to progress in motor learning for the large majority of students from the all group study. This research is open to the understanding and appreciation of how to best design video lectures that encourage learning and the development of knowledge.

Most of the laboratory studies on recasts have examined the role of intensive recasts provided repeatedly on the same target structure. This is different from the original definition of recasts as the reformulation of learner errors as they occur naturally and spontaneously in the course of communicative interaction. Using a within-group research design and a new testing methodology (video-based stimulated correction posttest), this laboratory study examined whether extensive and spontaneous recasts provided during smallgroup work were beneficial to adult L2 learners. Participants were 26 ESL learners, who were divided into seven small groups (3-5 students per group), and each group participated in an oral activity with a teacher. During the activity, the students received incidental and extensive recasts to half of their errors; the other half of their errors received no feedback. Students’ ability to detect and correct their errors in the three types of episodes was assessed using two types of tests: a stimulated correction test (a video-based computer test) and a written test. Students’ reaction time on the error detection portion of the stimulated correction task was also measured. The results showed that students were able to detect more errors in error+recast (error followed by the provision of a recast) episodes than in error-recast (error and no recast provided) episodes (though this difference did not reach statistical significance). They were also able to successfully and partially successfully correct more errors in error+recast episodes than in error-recast episodes, and this difference was statistically significant on the written test. The reaction time results also point towards a benefit from recasts, as students were able to complete the task (slightly) more quickly for error+recast episodes than for error-recast episodes.

Nonlinear motion of the microcantilever probe in the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) has been extensively studied considering mainly the van der Waals forces. Since the behavior of the microcantilever is vital to quality of generated images, the study of control strategies that force the probe to avoid undesired behavior such as chaotic motion, is also of significant importance. A number of published works has shown that the microcantilever is subject to chaotic motion for a certain combination of parameters. For such a parameter combination, the control system must suppress the chaotic motion. Here, an study of the AFM mathematical model is presented, aiming to find a region of operation of the AFM where the motion is chaotic. In order to suppress the chaotic motion, a periodic orbit of the system is obtained, and the controller forces the system to that periodic orbit. Two control strategies are used, namely: The State Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) and the Optimal Linear Feedback Control (OLFC). Both control strategies consider the complete nonlinearities of the system, and the OLFC guarantees the global stability. The numerical simulations carried out showed the efficiency of the control methods as well as the sensitivity of each control strategy to parametric errors. Without the parametric errors, both control strategies were effective in maintaining the system into the desired orbit. On the other hand, in the presence of parametric errors, the SDRE technique was more robust than the OLFC.

The paper investigates relationship between working memory efficiency, defined as the result of its’ processing & storage capacity (Oberauer et al., 2003) and the tendency to (1) create assosiative memory distortions (false memories, FM); (2) yield under the influence of external, suggesting factors. Both issues were examined using extended version of Deese-Roediger-McDermott procedure (1959, 1995), modified in order to meet the study demands. Suggestion was contained in an ostentatious feedback information the participants (N=88) received during the DRM procedure. Working memory (WM) was measured by standardized tasks (n-back, Jaeggi et al., 2010; automatic-ospan, Unsworth et al., 2005). Study included 3 conditions, differing in the quality of suggestion (positive, negative or neutral). Participants were assigned into 3 groups, depending on results they achieved completing the WM tasks. Obtained results alongside the previously set hypothesis, revealed that (1) WM impacts individuals’ tendency to create false memories in DRM and (2) that the individuals showing higher rates in WM tasks are less willing to yield to suggestion compared to those with lesser ones. It also showed that the greater amount to shift (Gudjonsson, 2003), emerges under the negative suggestion condition (collating positive). Notwithstanding that the interaction effect did not achieve saliency, both analyzed factors (WM and suggesting content) are considered as meaningful to explain memory suggestion susceptibility in presented study. Although, obtained results emphasize the crucial role of WM efficiency, that is believed to decide the magnitude of feedback that is influential in every subject. Therefore, issue demands further exploration.

Optimal feedback control depending only on the system state is constructed for a control problem by the non-causal descriptor system for which optimal feedback control depending on state derivatives was considered in the paper (Müller, 1998). To this end, a non-symmetric solution of the algebraic operator Riccati equation is used.

Opis:
This paper aims at accentuating and exploring the effect of using electronic portfolio (EP) platform in providing corrective feedback (CF) on EFL students’ overall and micro-componential writing performance. Moreover, by conducting a semi-structured interview, the study seeks to obtain students’ attitudes towards the use of EP in three aspects, namely awareness, work/activity, and pros and cons. A total of 34 intermediate EFL students ranging from 20-25 years of age participated in this study. While students in the experimental group (N=17) received their corrective feedback via EP, the control group’s (N=17) writing assignments were corrected using traditional paper-and-pen portfolio. An EP platform was designed using DOKEOS environment during eight instructional sessions. The results of this investigation revealed that providing corrective feedback on EFL students’ writing via EP has a constructive effect on students’ overall writing performance (p=.02) and on writing micro-components except for idea development and idea wrap-up. The information obtained from the interview indicated that the EFL students developed affirmative attitudes towards the three aspects of using EP, namely, awareness, work/activity, and pros and cons. The findings of this study bear some implications for material developers and writing teachers and highlight the effective role EP plays in expediting CF on students’ writing and equipping them with the ubiquitous technology to get involved in writing activities with a positive standpoint.

Fiscal policy includes the government decisions on the size of taxes that affect the size of the government deficit. There are different types of government deficit. The aim of the analyses is to examine the relation between the type of deficit and the optimal level of tax rate. In this article we verify the hypothesis that the type of deficit considered affects the tax rate. For the hypothesis verification, we use the feedback rules that are the solution of the quadratic-linear problem.

Modern and innovative road spreaders are now equipped with a special swiveling mechanism of the spreading disc. It allows for adjusting asymmetrical or a symmetrical spreading pattern and provides for the possibility to maintain the size of the spreading surface and achieve an accurately defined spreading pattern with spreading widths. Thus the paper presents a modelling and control design methodology, and the concept is proposed to design high-performance and optimal drive systems for spreading devices. The paper deals with a nonlinear model of an electric linear actuator and solution of the new intelligent/optimal control problem for the actuator.

The LMI based method for the control with the state estimate, subject to the input variable constraints in the state feedback control of the linear MIMO systems, is presented in the paper. The method is particularly effective when the input variable constraints and the system output are of interest.

In the paper, different structures of electric ladder networks are considered: RC, RL, and RLC. Such systems are composed of resistors, inductors and capacitors connected in series. The elements of the network are not identical and have nonlinear characteristics. The network's dynamic behavior can be mathematically described by nonlinear differential equations. A class of robust feedback controls is designed to stabilize the system. The asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is analyzed and proved by the use of Lyapunov functionals and LaSalle's invariance principle. The results of computer simulations are included to verify theoretical analysis and mathematical formulation.

Opis:
Background: This study aimed to assess the accuracy of force production by the limbs and to identify the ability to differentiate this force during a progressively increasing value, in response to different types of extrinsic feedback. Material and methods: The study involved nineteen healthy and physically active boys and girls aged 12.82±0.34 years, body height 157.05±9.02 cm, and body mass 44.89±7.89 kg. The tasks were to perform a series of right and left upper limb pulls and pushes with increasing force using the levers of the kinesthesiometer and a series of lower limb presses on the pedal of the kinesthesiometer. The tasks were completed in three feedback conditions: no feedback, sound feedback, verbal feedback, and the retention test was used. To assess the level of accuracy of force production, the novel index of force production accuracy (FPAIndex) was used. Results: The outcomes expressing the value of FPAIndex on the point scale indicated that the highest level of kinesthetic differentiation was observed when no feedback was provided (1.17 points), and the lowest kinesthetic differentiation was recorded when verbal feedback was provided (3.33 points). However, they were devoid of statistical value. The repeated-measures analysis of variance ANOVA with the Tukey post-hoc test (HSD) indicated a significant lowest (p=0.0402) level of accuracy of FPA (x̄36.12±18.29 [N]) only for the act of left lower limb press (LL PRESS) in the retention test, while no feedback was provided to the subjects. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that verbal and sound extrinsic feedback did not affect the accuracy of force production by the upper and lower limbs and the ability to differentiate this force in simple movements among children.
Materiał i Metody: W badaniach uczestniczyło dziewiętnaście zdrowych i aktywnych fizycznie chłopców i dziewcząt w wieku 12.82±0.34 lat, o wysokości ciała 157.05±9.02 cm i masie ciała 44.89±7.89 kg. Do oceny poziomu dokładności generowanej siły wykorzystano autorski wskaźnik dokładności generowanej siły (FPAIndex). Wyniki: Wyniki odzwierciedlające wartość FPAIndex w skali punktowej wskazały że najwyższy poziom różnicowania kinestetycznego zaobserwowano w przypadku próby pozbawionej informacji zwrotnej (1.17 pkt), a najniższy w próbie z przekazem werbalnej informacji zwrotnej (3.33 pkt). Były one jednak pozbawione wartości statystycznej. Analiza wariancji ANOVA z porównaniem wielokrotnym, wykonanym testem post-hoc Tukeya (HSD) wykazała istotnie najniższy (p=0.0402) poziom FPA (x̄36.12±18.29 [N]), tylko dla czynności naciskania lewą kończyną dolną (LL PRESS) w teście retencyjnym, gdy badanym nie dostarczano informacji zwrotnej. Wnioski: Wyniki badań pokazały, że werbalne i dźwiękowe zewnątrzpochodne informacje zwrotne nie mają wpływu na dokładność wytwarzania siły kończynami górnymi i dolnymi a także na zdolność jej różnicowania podczas wykonywania ruchów prostych wśród dzieci.

We consider stabilizing a discrete-time LTI (linear time-invariant) system via state feedback where both the quantized state and control input signals are involved. The system under consideration is stabilizable and stabilizing state feedback has been designed without considering quantization, but the system’s stability is not guaranteed due to the quantization effect. For this reason, we propose a hybrid quantized state feedback strategy asymptotically stabilizing the system, where the values of the quantizer parameters are updated at discrete time instants. We also extend the result to the case of static output feedback.

This paper describes the Phase II results of qualitative research involving design teams of primary school second-graders divided as follows: designers (D) – the creators of a solution; clients (C) and executors (E) – helping to improve the project. The study aimed to observe and describe what questions and feedback stimulated new idea generation to improve the initial solution, addressing the following research question: What does a constructive dialogue between peers look like when developing a group project? The adopted research approach was based on educational team design (the case study method). Based on observations and peer conversations, the authors determined the conditions that facilitated constructive dialogue, and those that hindered the accomplishment of the group work in question.

The problem of stabilization of fractional positive linear continuous-time linear systems with delays by state-feedbacks is addressed. The gain matrix of the state feedback is chosen so that the zeros of the closed-loop polynomial are located in a sector of the left half of complex plane. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the problem are established and a procedure for computation of a gain matrix of the feedback is proposed. The considerations are illustrated by a numerical example.

Future RF Control systems will require simultaneous data acquisition of up to 100 fast ADC channels at sampling rates of around 100 MHz and real time signal processing within a few hundred nanoseconds. At the same time the standardization of Low-Level RF systems are common objectives for all laboratories for cost reduction, performance optimization and machine reliability. Also desirable are modularity and scalability of the design as well as compatibility with accelerator instrumentation needs including the control system. All these requirements can be fulfilled with the new telecommunication standard ATCA when adopted to the domain of instrumentation. We describe the architecture and design of an ATCA based LLRF system for the European XFEL. Initial results of the demonstration of such a system at the FLASH user facility will be presented. Presented are the results of operating essential components of a prototype during the machine studies in January and March 2009.

Generation Z is going to be an important part of human resources within the labor market. As this generation was born and raised under specific conditions different from the other generations in the labor market (e.g., they have always had ubiquitous Internet access), questions arise about the characteristics of the youngest generation – what are they like? The results of this study, based on 1162 representatives of Generation Z (using questionnaires), show that, for the Generation Z, feedback about the results of their work is a crucial element that they most identify with and expect (72%). Additionally, new technologies are a natural environment for them. In the context of their mobility, they willingly go on foreign business trips, but they are not so willing to relocate for work. Although it is said that they easily change their jobs, according to the research results, they would be happy to be employed for a longer period of time by one employer (even their entire life – 39%), but their work needs to be attractive. A fast career as a priority for Generation Z was the most rarely chosen characteristic (only 17% identify with this statement). The research sample is not representative.

The project was a joint task of National Road Safety Council, Polish Educational Group "Educativ" and chosen Regional Drivers' Examination Centres. Methodological support was provided by Motor Transport Institute. The aim of the project was road safety improvement by increasing competences and abilities of employees of Regional Drivers' Examination Centres responsible for reeducation courses for drivers violating traffic laws. Fifty two participants were engaged in the project - psychologists, policemen and organizers of the courses for traffic law violators. A series of trainings consisted of conference meetings and regional workshops. Participants obtained a certificate by passing the final test. The exam was organized in an online form and in that aspect it was an experiment. Each participant received a disposable login in order to access an examination program located on an indicated web page. Admission to the exam was possible anytime within two particular days. Test consisted of 50 randomly selected questions arranged in a three-choice format with one, two or three correct answers. Time for each question was limited. Analysis confirms usefulness of network instruments in knowledge verification, especially in the presence of territorially dispersed participants of training courses. Statistical data about user choices and answering time were gathered, showing correlation of answers and making possible detailed analysis of questions and feedback-driven future training improvement.

Some elementary optimization techniques, together with some not so well-known robustness measures and condition numbers, will be utilized in pole assignment. This contrasts with the misconception by Kautsky et al. that the method diverges, or the recent discovery by Yang and Tits (1995) that the method converges to stationary points.

In this paper, the issue related to control of the plant with nonconstant parameters is addressed. In order to assure the unchanged response of the system, an adaptive state feedback speed controller for permanent magnet synchronous motor is proposed. The model-reference adaptive system is applied while the Widrow-Hoff rule is used as adjustment mechanism of controller’s coefficients. Necessary modifications related to construction of the cost function and formulas responsible for adjustment of state feedback speed controller’s coefficients are depicted. The impact of adaptation gain, which is the only parameter in proposed adjustment mechanism, on system behaviour is experimentally examined. The discussion about computational resources consumption of the proposed adaptation algorithm and implementation issues is included. The proposed approach is utilized in numerous experimental tests on modern SiC based drive with nonconstant moment of inertia. Comparison between adaptive and nonadaptive control schemes is also shown.

The analysis results of the amplification factor relative error of three kinds of amplifiers (non-inverting (Fig. 1,b), inverting (Fig. 2,a) and differential (Fig. 2,b)) based on resistors dynamic-feedback are presented in the paper. Such amplifiers are used for signal amplification in a wide dynamic range when, practically, the same value of the relative error of different amplification factors is required. It is shown that values of the mean and standard deviation of the mean amplification factor relative errors are proportional to the square of the resistance relative standard deviation: formulas (7), (8), (10). Moreover, it is shown that the mean error value do not practically depended on the number of used resistors. The error standard deviation decreases proportionally to the root square of the number of resistors. The characteristics of the amplification factor relative errors calculated by analytical formulas and by the Monte Carlo method for different number of feed-back resistors (from 2 to 100) are shown in Fig. 3. Based on the analysis of the influence of switch variation resistance on the amplification factor error, the condition (13) for correct choice of switches is obtained. It is shown that using resistors with the relative standard deviation of 0,1% and switches whose resistance deviation corresponds to the condition (13), it is possible to obtain the amplification factor accuracy of a few ppm.

Telemanipulation systems with force-feedback are being developed from early 70's. These devices were successfully applied for remote manipulation of objects at very large distances. These types of manipulator systems are also applied in hostile environments. This work includes development of a new approach to a control design in bilateral teleoperation with force-feedback. The new control scheme does not require the force sensor placed between the manipulator body and objects of an environment. Presented approach estimates the value of environmental force impact on the manipulator body by an inverse mechanical model of the Slave subsystem. Prediction of the inverse model requires information about the value of current position of a manipulator joint. Presented system uses model estimated on-line, during manipulation tasks. Research was carried out on a hydraulic servo-mechanism test stand. The work ends with the report from the test stand and conclusions.

In the paper the problem of ship autopilot design based on feedback linearization method combined with the robust control approach, is considered. At first the nonlinear ship model (of Norrbin type) is linearized with the use of the simple system nonlinearity cancellation. Next, bearing in mind that exact values of the model parameters are not known, the ensuing inaccuracies are taken as disturbances acting on the system. Thereby is obtained a linear system with an extra term representing the uncertainty which can be treated by using robust, H∞optimal control techniques. The performed simulations of ship course-changing process confirmed a high performance of the proposed controller despite the assumed significant errors of its parameters.

This paper investigates how the values of negative feedback from students’reflections should be exploited and utilized as an approach of pedagogical development. It was extracted as a step of the 3-year-action-research circles with an empirical study using the data collected from 96 cases of students’ reflections in a university of Poland for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Regardless the limitation of the diversity of the research tools and types of data, the study found the noticeable lessons through the process of problematizing the significant learning. The data was framed from the negative awareness at the wording and surface levels for quantitative descriptive and then these signals were directed to locate the messages holding the negative signals for qualitative analysis. Eight groups of codes were categorized using Atlas.ti from 172 quotations, extracted from 140 extracts of 96 cases of students’ reflections. The findings show that the negative signals are important to the teacher’s modifications and actions to alternate the future plans and teaching. In addition, seven problems were also generated from analyzing the quotations using this design. The attempts to fix these problems would facilitate the teachers to improve the skills of teaching and quality of the course. A different way of looking at students’ negative signals of this paper could be seen as an innovative approach to pedagogical development in comparison to the common usage of feedback itself which has been exploited divergently in education.

The dual (if it exists) and adjoint circuit of an oscillator are also oscillators. Limitations of Barkhausen’s approach are pointed out. It is explained that there are many ways to generate oscillations other than Barkhausen’s positive feedback configuration. The new approach emphasizes that appropriate D C inputs / initial conditions are important.

An ad hoc questionnaire was designed, validated and administered to 113 Slovenian and 100 Spanish teachers. The data were collected and analysed with the use of descriptive and inferential statistics. Among the most relevant findings, it is noteworthy that Spanish teachers focus on providing feedback on receptive skills while their Slovenian colleagues pay more attention to productive skills. Also, results from both groups reveal a lack of FL pronunciation feedback and scarce attention to interactive aspects of communication.

The goal was to test strategies to improve teamwork skills in a course on Ores deposits, MSc Earth Science, Uppsala University. A focus on teamwork was established by presenting the collaborative practicals as a series of linked opportunities to work together, get feedback on the teamwork process and reflect on and evaluate the teamwork. During the collaborative PBL sessions sociograms were used to provide feedback. Criteria based evaluation was also used to evaluate task oriented and interpersonal skills. Sociograms and criteria based evaluation promoted behavioural changes that improved teamwork interactions.

Opis:
Feedback received by students plays an important role in shaping students’ academic progress, their ability to abide by certain rules and norms as well as their pro-social behaviours. The effectiveness of feedback depends on the way it is provided. The aim of this study was to determine what type of feedback is the most prevalent in the student-teacher communication. Provided feedback was analysed from two separate perspectives: students’ and teachers’. Students (N = 271) and teachers (N = 65) from chosen high schools took part in the study. Teacher’s Feedbacks Questionnaire was used to obtain the respondents’ opinions on the frequency of different types of feedback provided both in “teaching situations” vs “pedagogical situations” and with respect to positive vs negative behaviours. Thanks to the application of an appropriate procedure it was possible to obtain data regarding: 1) teachers’ imagined expectations of students and 2) actual reactions (as declared individually). Students were tested in regards to: 3) their expectations towards feedback and 4/ actual feedback received from the teachers. The results show that, as for the positive feedback, teachers’ beliefs towards what is expected by the students and what students actually expect were congruent, whereas it was opposite regarding the negative feedback. A clear discrepancy could also be seen between students’ and teachers’ opinions concerning the actual feedback provided for both positive and negative feedback. There is a clear tendency for teachers to present themselves as communicatively competent pedagogues, who provide effective and constructive feedback. Students, on the other hand, indicate that the student-teacher communication is lacking in terms of providing feedback

This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods research design to examine the beliefs of Vietnamese EFL students concerning oral corrective feedback (CF) and the role of some individual differences in these beliefs. The data consisted of questionnaires completed by 250 Vietnamese high school students and follow-up interviews with 15 of them. Exploratory factor analysis revealed six latent factors underlying students’ beliefs about CF, namely, (1) output-prompting CF and eliciting recasts, (2) desire for CF, (3) non-verbal cues, (4) important errors, (5) input-providing CF, and (6) less important errors. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of the interviews showed that students were positive about CF. They liked both input-providing CF and output-prompting CF for all error types. Metalinguistic feedback was the most strongly preferred, while clarification request was the least preferred. Further statistical analyses revealed some interesting relationships between students’ beliefs about CF and their gender, English learning motivation, and self-rated introversion/extraversion. Females were more positive about CF than males, and extraverted females were more positive about input-providing CF than introverted females. Also, students learning English for exams were more positive about CF than those learning English for communication. Pedagogical implications for effective feedback provision in EFL contexts are discussed.

The paper presents new possibilities for learning offered by the use of mobile quizzes in mathematics. We present quizzes created with the MobileQuiz2 application of the University of Mannheim. The main difficulty to overcome was writing mathematical texts and implementing interactive math applets. The applets illustrate particular issues and enable the students to interact with the course content more deeply than simple listening. The combination of interactive math applets and mobile quiz can then be used during the lectures as well as learning quizzes with hints. These are invaluable before a test or exam. The mobile quizzes can directly be enriched with equations, interactive formulas or drawings. When used in large variety, they are entertainment and a spectacular form of repetition of the material. In addition, the lecturer has the side benefit of an immediate feedback, which shows him the degree of the students’ understanding of the topic.

Twórcy tej aplikacji uwzględnili specyficzne potrzeby matematyków. Podstawową trudnością wymagającą przezwyciężenia było użycie czcionki matematycznej i wykorzystanie apletów mobilnych np. GeoGerby. Stanowią znakomite urozmaicenie zajęć i dzięki temu aktywizują do działania.

Despite the large number of studies conducted on teachers’ oral corrective feedback, the findings of these studies have been mainly limited to cognitive orientations rooted in experimental designs and the verbal discourse of the teacher as the main object of inquiry. Considering teachers’ affective concerns regarding their corrective feedback and the shift from negative psychology to positive psychology in the field of second/foreign language teaching as well as the entirety of the teacher’s corrective repertoire, in this case study, we aimed to explore the enjoyment building capacity of a teacher’s multimodal corrective feedback in a university general English course. We video-recorded the teacher’s multimodal corrective feedback including verbal and nonverbal semiotic resources like gesture, gaze, and posture while observing the learners’ emotional experiences for eight sessions. We also conducted stimulated recall interviews with some learners and collected their written journals about the experiences of enjoyment with regard to the teacher’s multimodal corrective feedback scenarios. The teacher’s multimodal corrective feedback was analyzed through systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis (SF-MDA) and the content of the interview transcripts as well as the written journals were qualitatively analyzed. The findings indicated that the teacher’s inherent multimodality in his corrective feedback broadened the main dimensions of enjoyment by raising the learners’ attention to their errors, heightening their focus on the correct form, and increasing the salience of his corrective feedback. Further arguments regarding the findings are discussed.

Underwater robots are integral parts of the industry and marine science. The application of the underwater vehicles has increased with the development of the activities in deep sea. This paper presents a special Hovering type Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (HAUV) for underwater missions. To provide the most suitable and efficient formation of vehicle thrusters for reduction of complexity of control strategies and control of the most degrees of freedom, in this paper, a new thrusters’ configuration is investigated, in terms of number of the thrusters, position and the thrust direction of the thrusters. The state feedback controller is designed according to the linear dynamic model and then applied to the non-linear model to validate the controller performance. Designed controller consists of three controllers: horizontal plane controller, vertical plane controller and surge controller. The last controller is developed to control the forward speed. For examination of the system behavior in presence of environmental disturbance and hydrodynamic coefficients uncertainty, the robustness of controller is also investigated.

Opis:
The problem of finding a gain matrix of the state-feedback of 2D linear system such that the closed-loop system is positive and asymptotically stable is formulated and solved. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the problem are established. It is shown that the problem can be reduced to suitable linear programming problem. The proposed approach can be extended to 2D linear system described by the 2D Roesser model.

Moreover, I show that new institutionalists transcend the limits of old institutionalism, as they in-clude in the analysis both formal and informal institutions, and elaborate theories of institutional emergenceand change. In the second section of the article, I discuss the main assumptions of historical institutionalismand its conception of institutional change. To grasp the distinctive character of the latter, I compare it withthe conception of institutional change in rational choice institutionalism.

Opis:
In recent years the application of computer software to the learning process has been found to be an indisputably effective tool supporting the traditional teaching methods. Particular focus has been put on the application of techniques based on speech and language processing to the second language learning. Most of the commercial self-study programs, however, do not allow for introduction of an individualized learning course by the teacher and to concentrate on segmental features only. The paper discusses the use of speech technology in the training of foreign languages’ pronunciation and prosody and defines pedagogical requirements for an effective training with CAPT systems. In this context, steps taken in the development of the intelligent tutoring system AzAR3.0 (German ‘Automat for accent reduction’) in the scope of the Euronounce project (Cylwik et al., 2008) are described with the focus on creation of the linguistic content. In response to the European Union’s call for promoting less widely spoken languages, the project focuses on German as a target language for native speakers of Polish, Slovak, Czech, and Russian, and vice versa. The paper presents the design of the speech corpus for the purpose of the tutoring system and the analysis of pronunciation errors. The results of the latter provide information which is important for Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) training on the one hand, and for automatic error detection and feedback generation on the other hand. In the end, Pitch Line software for implementation in the prosody visualization and training module of AzAR3.0 tutoring system is described.
