This paper explores the notion of compassion and points to some intricacies inherent in it, in particular the paradox of egocentrism. Most ambiguous is its ontological status: is it an emotion, a virtue, a moral commitment, or a neurological reflex? Each category entails different implications for the process of educating compassionate beings. The conclusion is that genuine compassion is, from the very beginning, not just mere feeling, it is based on the recognition of rights of others. A person in need is much more than the object of our noble compassionate feelings and caring help, she is the subject of rights.

The structure of conversation is a subject of many empirical researches along the Conversational Analytical point of view. Scholars have agreed that nonverbal signals which are called regulators act as a kind of traffic signals that aid in the flow of interactions. This paper studies the use of nonverbal regulators in Hausa social interactions, through the use of data consisting of natural face-to-face interactions taken from multiple settings. The research discovers that Hausa peoples’ interaction, especially in face-to-face settings, is marred with different gestures and postures acting as conversational regulators. Beyond regulating the interaction, these gestures and postures contribute to meaning making and influence communication outcomes.

This study compared the challenges of 20 education supervisors in executing technology-assisted and in-person supervision. These supervisors oversee the curriculum articulation for over 200,000 Filipino learners in 85 Philippine public schools. Results showed that technology-assisted supervision (Mn=3.18; Md=3.26) outscored in-person supervision (Mn=2.88; Md=2.95), with the former mode of supervision obtaining higher perceived challenges than the latter. However, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test found an insignificant difference in their degrees of challenges when grouped according to the mode of supervision used (p-value=.191>.05), indicating the need to further explore the supervisors’ experiences to improve their supervision quality.

This qualitative exploration is a follow-up study to the quantitative research published in a peer-reviewed international journal in 2023. Generally, the study delved into the transition experiences and preferences of 20 Filipino education supervisors in relation to their supervisory practices in over 80 Philippine public schools. Through validated open-ended interview questions, the responses were gathered and subsequently subjected to thematic analysis, which resulted in the emergence of the following themes: (1) the adjustments and challenges of the supervisors as they switched back from technology-assisted to in-person supervision; and (2) their preferred mode of supervision in the new normal of education.

‘Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational’ Objectives has been a mainstay of educational theory for over fifty years. In 2001 the original taxonomy was revised. This article uses Bloom's revised framework to design small groups in online classes. The author draws on his extensive experience in using small groups in face-to-face classes as well as fifteen years of experience with small groups in a variety of undergraduate and graduate online classes. He particularly addresses the need to design small groups that focus on Bloom's higher order category of „Create”. Suggestions for future research are also included.

Using the extended Huygens–Fresnel principle and Rayleigh scattering theory, optical trapping of the low index of refraction particles using a focused Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) non-vortex beam, a focused GSM vortex beam, and two face-to-face focused GSM vortex beams have been studied. The results demonstrate that the focused GSM non-vortex beam cannot capture the low index of refraction particles, however, the focused GSM vortex beam can be a two-dimensional trap of particles in the z-axis, and the transverse gradient force Fgrad,x and the trapping equilibrium region increase as the topological charge m increases. As the focal length f or the refractive index of particles np decreases, the radiation forces increase and the trapping ability also enhances. To trap the low index particles in three-dimensional space, we adopt that the two face-to-face focused GSM vortex beams can be used to construct an optical potential well. The transverse gradient force of two face-to-face focused GSM vortex beams is twice that of a single GSM vortex beam. The limit of the radius for the low index of refraction particles that were stably captured has also been determined. The obtained results provide valuable information for trapping and manipulating the low index of refraction particles using GSM vortex beams, which may be applied in micromanipulation, biotechnology, nanotechnology and so on.

Wraz z postępem cywilizacyjnym i rozwojem techniki proces komunikowania się ludzi uległ zasadniczej zmianie. Sieć internetowa podbiła współczesny świat, doprowadzając do powstania wielu pozytywnych zjawisk, dzięki którym łatwiej jest funkcjonować we wciąż zmieniającym się społeczeństwie. Jednym z najistotniejszych problemów współczesnego człowieka, wynikającym z nieograniczonych możliwości Internetu, jest zanik umiejętności komunikacji interakcyjnej. Zwykła rozmowa face to face stała się poważnym problemem społeczeństwa sieciowego, w którym kontakty z przyjaciółmi coraz częściej podtrzymywane są w sposób wirtualny. Problem ten ma ogromne znacznie dla całości społeczeństwa, gdyż osłabia relacje towarzyskie i rodzinne, rzutując na całokształt życia człowieka. Wpływ sieci na przemiany kulturowe i społeczne przeanalizowany został w różnych aspektach, a niniejszy referat jest próbą zwrócenia uwagi, w jaki sposób korzystanie z sieci internetowej wpływa na bezpośrednie kontakty społeczne.

This study examines the life of Chinese students studying in the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) during the COVID-19 pandemic and identifies students’ most preferred educational method during the pandemic and the most effective educational method post pandemic. A month-long quantitative survey was conducted, supplemented by a qualitative survey. Online educational method (OEM) was the most preferred. While students hoped for the face-to-face educational method (FEM) post pandemic, they also wanted OEM to expand because of their improved awareness about it and having experienced its advantages. Thus, OEM could potentially be the most effective educational method for Chinese students.

Interaction Analysis has been explored for the initiating topics, turn taking, and asking and answering questions in face-to-face learning environments during the last decades. This study investigated the form and sequence of the questions and answers in an asynchronous environment from a non-interventionist point of view. To conduct the research, 16 questions and answers from the discussion boards of an eight-week international online research course from 30 participants were copied, classified, and analyzed according to the Hmelo-Silver and Barrows’ (2008) grid. All the questions were classified as long-answer, short-answer, and task-oriented questions and their frequencies were calculated. Also, the presence of the Initiation, Response, and Feedback/Inquiry (IRFI) pattern was examined The results indicated that the largest number of questions fell under long-answer types and the participants were more motivated in responding the long-answer queries relating directly to the immediate studied materials or asking about definitions and personal ideas. The findings supported the idea that IRFI pattern might not be applicable in asynchronous environments. Therefore, the instructional patterns need to be designed carefully according to the needs of the new contexts. This study could enhance meaningful interactions in online educational settings such as language learning, teacher training, and professional development.

Purpose: There are several factors that affect the satisfaction and performance of virtual and face-to-face teams. Literature shows however, that there is a research gap as to the influence regarding the analysis of those factors in regards to different generations. The purpose of the paper is the youngest generation – Gen Z functions in virtual and face-to-face teams and how the type of team influences the performance and satisfaction of team members. Design/methodology/approach: Adopting a generational approach, a research design, including an experiment and a survey, was developed in order to analyze if the type of teamwork affects performance and satisfaction of Generation Z representatives. Findings: Findings suggest that the youngest, tech-savvy generation functions easier and more naturally in virtual teams, showing no significant differences in performance in virtual and face 16 to-face teams, and even indicate that working in virtual teams is more satisfying than working in traditional teams. Practical implications: The results of the research can provide a basis for managerial decisions when selecting members of real and virtual teams. Originality/value: The paper contributes to the ongoing scientific debate by presenting the perspective of Generation Z on virtual work, which, to a certain extent, contradicts current beliefs about performance and satisfaction in traditional and virtual teams. It shows that the generational approach should be included in team design in order improve team and organizational competitiveness.

The main purpose of the paper is to explore how cluster organisations (COs) take advantage of direct (F2F) and indirect (ICT) contacts in fulfilling their main roles. The paper addresses the research question: “How important are Information and Communication Technologies at each level of advancement of cluster cooperation?” The research was conducted in 2016 in four purposefully selected cluster organisations representing metal and ICT industry. The basic method of data collection was an in-depth individual interview. The authors applied the qualitative content analysis as the procedure to analyse the interviews. The research sample comprised of 30 cluster members. The research was based on an original theoretical concept referring to the trajectory of the development of cooperative relationships in cluster organisations. Four levels of development of cluster cooperation as well as three main roles of cluster organisation were distinguished. At each level, COs play one of three identified roles: a direct resource supplier (providing access to resources), a broker (facilitating resource exchanges) and an integrator (integrating into different dimensions), which gives a total of 12 specific roles. The research has shown that both direct and indirect contacts were significant both in fulfilling the roles assigned to the cluster organisations as well as in developing the cluster cooperation. It has been also observed that ICT importance was slightly different at each level of a CO’s development. Only in one identified role (at level II: Process integrator) the importance of ICT tools was at least as great as F2F contacts. The research study contributes to the literature which refers to the question of face-to-face contacts established in geographical proximity versus the ones set up by using Information and Communication Technologies in cluster organisations. It was noticed that even though ICT plays a significant role in the functioning of COs, they cannot replace face-to-face contacts. They can only be their important complement at every level of CO development. There are also some limitations connected with the qualitative approach, which does not allow the author to generalise the findings. The first limitation is the small research sample. The second limitation is the subjectivity characterising qualitative research, mainly due to the applied techniques of data collection and analysis.

In considerably penetrated advertising environment which still more often uses relatively traditional practices, more creative, more original and more personal contact or experience based forms of positive promotion have been generated. This direction is covered by guerilla marketing, and within it particularly by forms using ambient media integrating natural environment of a discourse recipient. Principled representation of originality in the essence of this form of marketing communication assumes a need to ensure optimization of a creative process by advertising agency in such a way that the teams proposing artefacts will work under conditions maximizing the creativity of final proposals. In our paper, we present identification of optimal form of a creative process course in the advertising agency, while we compare creative results (represented by proposals of the ambient advertisement) of the teams working and communicating in two forms – classical “face to face” form and communication mediated electronically. Virtual electronically mediated communication (EMC) offers a possibility to cooperate from distance places; it eliminates some inhibitors of FtF communication and offers so called “multi-logue”. But results of our survey show statistically significant superiority of classical form of communication among the monitored factors of the creativity in groups of the teams which used such classical form of communication during their creative process.
W znanym dość dobrze środowisku reklamowym, ciągle w większości bazującym na tradycyjnych formach przekazu, coraz częściej pojawiają się działania bardziej kreatywne i oryginalne działania promocyjne, oparte na osobistym kontakcie i doświadczeniu. Taki kierunek zmian odzwierciedlają działania wpisujące się w nurt marketingu partyzanckiego, a w szczególności te, które używają niestandardowych form promocji – zapośredniczonych medialnie – integrujących płaszczyznę realnego i dyskursywnego środowiska ich odbiorców. Zasadnicza reprezentacja oryginalności tej formy komunikacji marketingowej zakłada potrzebę zapewnienia optymalizacji procesu twórczego przez agencję reklamową w taki sposób, aby zespoły proponujące artefakty działały w warunkach maksymalizujących kreatywność końcowych propozycji. W naszym artykule przedstawiamy identyfikację optymalnej formy procesu twórczego w agencji reklamowej, porównując twórcze wyniki (reprezentowane przez propozycje reklamy zewnętrznej) zespołów pracujących i komunikujących się w dwóch formach – klasycznej „twarzą w twarz” oraz mediowanej komputerowo. Komunikacja wirtualna mediowana elektronicznie oferuje możliwości współpracy bez względu na dystans; eliminuje niektóre z inhibitorów komunikacji „twarzą-w-twarz” i oferuje model komunikacji „wielu-do-wielu”. Jednakże wynik naszego badania pokazuje statystycznie znaczącą przewagę klasycznej formy komunikacji wśród monitorowanych czynników kreatywności w grupach zespołów, które wykorzystywały taką klasyczną formę komunikacji podczas ich twórczego procesu.

Definitywne drogi oddechowe są złotym standardem, jeśli chodzi o udrażnianie dróg oddechowych u pacjentów urazowych, ponieważ zapewniają najlepszą ochronę przed aspiracją treści z żołądka i w sposób pewny utrzymują drożność dróg oddechowych zapewniając jednocześnie możliwość wentylacji dodatnimi ciśnieniami o wyższej wartości. W warunkach pozaszpitalnych niejednokrotnie intubacja stanowi ogromne wyzwanie, gdyż nie zawsze można ją przeprowadzić w klasyczny sposób ze względu na niemożność ułożenia pacjenta na plecach. Istnieją jednak metody, co prawda mało popularne, które mogą z powodzeniem znaleźć zastosowanie w takich właśnie sytuacjach, a zastosowanie ich pozwoli zwiększyć poszkodowanym szansę na przeżycie.
Definitive airway is often regarded as the gold standard when dealing with trauma patients because it offers superior level of airway protection as well as the possibility of positive pressure ventilation. However, establishing definitive airway in out-of-hospital settings is often challenging as sometimes it is simply impossible to place the patients in an adequate and comfortable position for classic tracheal intubation. There are different alternative methods of intubation, albeit rather unpopular, which can be used in the above-mentioned situation and their application may increase the chances of survival of trauma patients.

Forty years ago Antonina Kłoskowska built up a universal paradigm of three social frames of culture. They included: frame one, i.e. local production of symbolic processes, close to folk culture; frame two — understood as a network of local institutions of culture; frame three — involving a radiation of pan-local centers, in particular a reception of contents transmitted by mass media. A basic sociological criterion of differentiating between these categories includes a type of contact, and adjacency of sender and recip- ient of symbolic communication. Currently, following years of development of digital means of communication, computer networks and fiber optic technologies, audio-visual systems, mobile telephones, etc. a proposal of frames of culture must be examined again. New media shape new vehicles of expression (e.g. hypertext), but most importantly they inspire specific social relations. Discussion over cultural framework is also triggered by accelerated processes of economic and social transformation, advanced globalization, increase of living standards and dissemination of consumption attitudes, changes in leisure activities of the middle class. In more narrowly understood domain of institutional and professional culture one witnessed the processes of European dereg- ulation and release of culture from state, which in Eastern Europe was accompanied by abolition of censorship and a different model of culture distribution, which is controlled by market and cultural (creative) industry rather than by central government. As a result, the nature of direct communication among people is subject to ongoing transformation. We witness more and more indirect cultural communication (off-line and on-line). Modified and broadened proposal of social frames of culture includes five rather than three paradigms, namely: the culture of indirect communication, the culture of associations and volunteers; the culture of local institutions (public and private), mass culture versus pop culture, cyber-culture, culture of network community. One has to underline that in the new reality of our civilization we can still use analytic principles of Kłoskowska’s typology. First, we can treat spiritual culture as a phenomenon of autotelic semiosis with pragmatic definition of sign; second, while describing social functioning of culture we can use a sociological criterion of contact and adjacency.

W artykule zostały przedstawione wyniki badań neurobiologicznych, dotyczących kluczowych etapów nabywania mowy w wieku niemowlęcym, pozwalające na wczesną diagnozę zakłóceń rozwoju. Autorka przedstawia techniki terapeutyczne, uruchamiające umiejętność: czytania twarzy, a także program słuchowy, gesty artykulacyjne (GA), Symultaniczno-Sekwencyjną Naukę Czytania® oraz manualne torowanie głosek (MTG).
The article presents the results of neurobiological research on the main stages of language development in infancy, which allow early diagnosis of developmental disorders. The author presents therapeutic techniques to acquiring the following skills: face reading and auditory program, Articulatory Gestures (GA), Simultaneous-Sequential Reading Approach®, and Manually Supported Phoneme Production (MTG).
