Background: The etiology of autism spectrum disorders is not well known but oxidative stress has been suggested to play a pathological role. Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of supervised physical exercise on oxidative stress in children with autism. Methods: Thirty boys with autism (7 to 9 years old) voluntarily participated in this study. They were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group performed a physical curriculum known as sports, play and active recreation for kids (SPARK) for 12 weeks (3 sessions of 45 minutes per week), while the control group was exempted to participate in the program. As the clinical parameters, the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured before and after the intervention. Results: The results indicated that BDNF levels significantly increased (85.7 %) and MDA concentration significantly decreased (29.2%) in the experimental group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In conclusion, the supervised physical exercise may result in less oxidative stress in children with autism.

Opis:
Diagnosis and treatment issues among heart failure (HF) patients are becoming one of the most important points in public health of developed countries, largely due to the aging of population and the fact that HF affects mainly the elderly. In this review we would like to focus on pathophysiology of exercise intolerance in patients with heart failure and potential benefits of cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Analysis of articles in the EBSCO database using keywords: heart failure, cardiac rehabilitation, exercise training, pathophysiology. HF can be described as a composite syndrome which results from structural or functional impairment of ventricular filling or blood ejection. Patients have variety of symptoms which usually are nonspecific. The most frequently occurring symptoms of HF are dyspnea and fatigue, which may restrict exercise capacity, and fluid retention. There are many possible pathophysiological factors involved in the development of exercise intolerance. Based on the available literature pathological changes in central hemodynamic function, pulmonary system, skeletal muscles, endothelial function and neurohumoral system can be distinguished. They play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of HF symptoms and represent a potential curative object. HF patients are characterized by diminished functional performance. Exercise training has many potential profits in patients with heart failure, including an increase in peak oxygen uptake, improvement in central hemodynamics, peripheral vascular and skeletal muscle function and has become part of evidence-based clinical therapy in these patients.

The aim of this study was verification whether an 8-week-long swimming exercise training would induce adaptive changes in body weight in rats and whether possible changes would depend on aquatic environment temperature and animal sex. The exercisetrained groups swam 4 minutes a day, five days a week during eight week of housing. Exercise was performed by swimming in glass tanks containing tap water maintained according to group at 5 ±2°C (cold group) and 36 ±2°C (thermal neutral group). Before and after each week of the experiment, rats were weighed. When comparing the nature of changes in the body weight of rats exposed to swimming exercise training in cold water, attention should be paid to their dependence on sex. There were statistically significant changes in the nature of changes in body weight between male rats and female rats of the cold group (5°C) as early as experimental week 2 until the end of the experiment (p < 0.001). Interestingly, the females exposed to swimming exercise training at 5°C were the only group in which an increase in body weight occurred during experimental week 8 in relation to baseline values.

No study has compared sling exercise training with elastic band resistance training in healthy older adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether different effects on functional mobility, strength and balance ability were produced by using different devices (sling trainer and elastic bands). Twenty-four participants were assigned to two different training groups, INT (TRX-OldAge) and CON (elastic bands). Participants trained three times per week for 30 minutes for 12 weeks. The Multisurface Obstacle Test for Older Adults (MSOT) and the 1-repetition maximum test using the chest press and the leg press were performed to assess functional mobility and dynamic strength, respectively. To examine balance ability, data of body-worn sensors and a force plate measured during different standing positions have been investigated. A main time effect occurred for functional mobility (p = 0.009) with a significant improvement within INT (p = 0.044), and for the chest press (p = 0.017) with a significant improvement within INT (p = 0.019). However, there was no group-by-time interaction in any of the measured parameters. Compared to elastic band resistance training, TRX-OldAge induced similar effects on the functional mobility, strength and balance ability of healthy older adults.

Introduction and objective. Physical effort plays a positive role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the cardiovascular status in postmenopausal women after several years of regular amateur training. Materials and method. A total of 55 generally healthy females aged 50–70 years, of whom 38 were members of a senior exercise group and 17 comprised a control group, were enrolled in the study. Parameters of blood flow, vascular resistance, myocardial contractility and thoracic fluid content were measured in a 10-minute supine resting test by impedance cardiography. Thereafter, central blood pressure, augmentation index and pulse wave velocity were measured by applanation tonometry. Results. Exercising women have a better outcome than the control group, when evaluated both with impedance cardiography and with applanation tonometry. They have a lower heart rate – HR (65.1 vs 71.5; p=0.033), higher blood flow (stroke index – SI, 58.6 vs 50.3; p=0.040), better myocardial contractility (acceleration index – ACI, 108.8 vs 88.1; p=0.027), higher preload (thoracic fluid content index – TFCI, 20.5 vs 18.1; p=0.002), lower afterload (systemic vascular resistance index – SVRI, 1972.9 vs 2110.5; p=0.026), lower central systolic blood pressure – cBPsys (119.0 vs 129.5; p=0.037), lower augmentation pressure – AP (10.3 vs 15.0; p=0.044) and lower pulse wave velocity – PWV (7.4 vs 8.4; p=0.001). Conclusions. Regular moderate continuous aerobic exercise training has a beneficial impact on the cardiovascular system in postmenopausal women.

Background: Walks and marches are a simple yet effective forms of physical activity, commonly used in the cardiac rehabilitation. It has been recommended recently to combine march training with exercises involving upper limbs. One of the most popular methods is Nordic Walking, during which special poles are used to increase the work of upper part of the body. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of Nordic Walking on the improvement in exercise tolerance and physical performance in patients rehabilitated after a myocardial infarction.Methods: The study population consisted of 30 patients hospitalized in a cardiac rehabilitation ward 14 to 28 days after myocardial infarction. On admission and after completing the rehabilitation program patients performed an exercise test following the modified Bruce protocol, a six-minute walk test and a test assessing physical performance (Fullerton test). 10 subjects were assigned to a control group, which followed a standard training program, and 20 patients to a group which additionally performed a march training using the Nordic Walking method 5 times a week. Each session of the march training lasted 40 minutes and consisted of a 3-kilometer walk interrupted by breaks during which respiratory and stretching exercises were performed. During the march and exercises patients used special poles for Nordic Walking.Results: Exercise tolerance improved in both study groups. However, the increase in the exercise tolerance was greater in the group performing Nordic Walking than in the control group (30% vs. 14%, respectively; P < 0.05). The rate-pressure product during the exercise test increased significantly only in the group performing Nordic Walking (from 18.2 x 103 ± 3.3 x 103 to 20.7 x 103 ± 4.4 x 103; P < 0.05). The improvement in the results of the six-minute walk test was greater in the group performing Nordic Walking (22% in comparison with 17% in the control group; P < 0.05). The results of the test assessing physical performance (Fullerton test) improved in both study groups.Conclusion: The results of this preliminary study indicate that march training using the Nordic Walking method effectively increases exercise tolerance and physical fitness in patients after myocardial infarction. If these findings are confirmed by the results of larger studies, Nordic Walking could be widely used in the early phases of cardiac rehabilitation. The influence of Nordic Walking on the cardiovascular risk factors and quality of life parameters should be investigated.
Cel: Spacery i marsze są prostą a jednocześnie efektywną formą aktywności fizycznej powszechnie stosowaną w rehabilitacji kardiologicznej. W ostatnich latach podejmuje się próby urozmaicenia ćwiczeń marszowych poprzez szersze włączenie pracy kończyn górnych, co umożliwia między innymi coraz bardziej popularna forma aktywności ruchowej znana jako Nordic Walking. Celem niniejszej pracy była ocena wpływu marszu nordyckiego na stopień poprawy tolerancji wysiłku oraz sprawność ogólną chorych rehabilitowanych po zawale serca (ZS). Metoda: Badaniom poddano 30 pacjentów, którzy w okresie 14–28 dni po ZS przebywali na Oddziale Rehabilitacji Kardiologicznej. U wszystkich pacjentów włączonych do programu badawczego przed rehabilitacją i po jej zakończeniu wykonano próbę wysiłkową wg zmodyfikowanego protokołu Bruce’a, 6-minutowy test marszowy oraz test sprawności fizycznej „Fullerton”. Chorych podzielono na dwie grupy. 10 pacjentów uczestniczyło w standardowym programie treningowym (grupa K), a u 20 pacjentów zastosowano dodatkowo (5x w tygodniu po 40 min) trening marszowy typu Nordic Walking (grupa NW). Polegał on na przejściu 3 kilometrów z przerwami przeznaczonymi na ćwiczenia oddechowe i rozciągające. W trakcie marszu oraz ćwiczeń z pacjenci wykorzystywali specjalne kije skonstruowane do tej formy aktywności ruchowej Wyniki: W obu grupach trenujących uzyskano poprawę tolerancji wysiłku, jednak odsetek poprawy w grupie NW (30%) był wyższy niż w grupie K (14%). Podobnie zachowywały się wartości iloczynu podwójnego (RPP). Istotne statystycznie zwiększenie RPP po treningu rehabilitacyjnym stwierdzono jedynie w grupie z NW (z 18,2 x 103 ±3,3 x 103 do 20,7 x 103 ±4,4 x 103) (p<0,05). 6-minutowa próba marszowa wykazała wyższy odsetek poprawy w grupie NW (22%) niż w grupie K (17%). Wyniki testu „Fullerton” wykazują istotną statystycznie poprawę analizowanych parametrów w obu grupach. Wnioski: Wstępne badania wskazują na celowość wdrażania marszu nordyckiego do programów rehabilitacji kardiologicznej po zawale serca z uwagi na wysoką efektywność w zakresie wpływu na poprawę tolerancji wysiłku i sprawności fizycznej. Pełne zaadoptowanie Nordic Walking jako jednej z istotnych metod wczesnej rehabilitacji kardiologicznej będzie możliwe po dokonaniu i przeanalizowaniu większej liczby obserwacji poszerzonych o dodatkowe parametry, głównie w zakresie wpływu na czynniki ryzyka oraz parametry jakości życia.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) was linked to sport participation. We report two studies in which we tested the link between exercise volume, defined as weekly hours of exercise, and EQ. Volunteers (n = 64 and n = 84) completed the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale. In Study I, significant correlations between exercise volume and use- and regulation-of-emotions prompted us to use a posteriori grouping into high- and low exercise-volume groups. The former exhibited better use-of-emotions than the latter (p = .007, d = .87). In Study II, using a priori grouping, we replicated the finding from Study I (p = .001, d = .78), and the groups also differed in “self-emotions appraisal” (p = .05, d = .44) and total EQ (p = .017, d = .54). Since the items measuring the use-of-emotions involve motivational aspects of the EQ, we posit that this dimension is “naturally” linked to exercise volume. Our findings also suggest that self-emotions appraisal and the overall EQ are linked to greater volumes of exercise. These results should provide an incentive for longitudinal studies in this area.

Heart failure (HF) due to its universality has become a huge challenge for modern medicine. Second part of the twentieth century brought significant changes in the rehabilitation, diagnostic and pharmacological procedures. There are no definitive guidelines for Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) in HF. Based on previous studies, the article tried to describe and illustrate the mechanism of effective CR and its intensity in HF patients, which could be helpful in CR protocol development. Cardiac Rehabilitation has confirmed efficacy in increased physical level of participation in inter alia, home/work/recreational activities, improved psychosocial well-being, functional independence, prevention of disability, long-term adherence to maintaining physically active lifestyle, improved cardiopulmonary fitness, strength, muscle endurance, and flexibility, reduced cardiovascular events risk and risk of mortality. Before and after CR conduction, baseline and final aerobic capacity should be examined with an ergospirometry test to evaluate CR protocol intensity and check its effectiveness, respectively. Frequency of training-bouts in CR protocol in HF patients were from 3 to 7 days per week, intensity ranged from 40% to 80% VO2max or 9 to 14 on rating of the perceived exertion (RPE) scale or 6 to 20 on the Borg scale. Duration of single bout-exercise ranged from 20 to 60 minutes.

Obesity has generated a pandemic in relation to public health; however, depending on the type of exercise, intensity, frequency, and time spent exercising, it provides different effects on the human body. The present investigation has the objective of comparing the effect of two modalities of exercise, aquatic and grounded, on the body composition of overweight and obese adults. The present was an experimental study with 26 overweight and obese adults distributed in two exercise groups: aquatic and grounded. Both groups received 12 weeks of moderate intensity aerobic training assessed with a heart rate monitor and determined through the maximum heart rate on each individual grounded and aquatic training. The study variables were Body Mass Index (BMI), fat percentage, and lean mass. After carrying out the exercise program significant differences were observed in the reduction of BMI as well as in the percentage of fat in both sexes ( < 0.01). No differences were observed in relation to BMI reduction, nor the percentage of fat evaluated before and after by different exercise modalities; likewise, there was no difference in either sex. In conclusion, exercise provides favorable changes in body composition variables; however, in this study, it does not rely on the exercise modality.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a Step Aerobics Training (SAT) on the skin temperature (Tsk) in different regions (ROI) of the anterior body surface. The study included 15 healthy volunteers of the Bialystok University of Technology (BUT) without any previous experience in SAT training. Two sets of thermograms were recorded before and immediately after exercise at the first and last sessions of a 30-weeks SAT program with a progressive intensity. The results indicate a generalized drop in body temperature immediately after exercise with ΔTsk values of -2.45ºC registered immediately after the first training and lower drops (ΔTsk = -1.69ºC) after the 30 weeks of SAT. The regions with lower values of post- vs pre-exercise Tsk were the thighs both in the first session and in the last session of the 30-weeks SAT program. The results show non-significant variations for asymmetries between the values of the contralateral ROIs in every moment of the data collection. We concluded that a 30-week SAT program resulted in significant drop of mean Tsk of evaluated body parts (ROI), being the thermal effects related with the areas more activated in the sport practice. From the thermal asymmetries perspective, the training program carried out did not generate any injury risk for the participants.

The aim of the research was to assess changes in ghrelin, leptin and free fatty acids (FFA) levels in women’s blood after training. The research was carried out in women aged 45.55 ±11.33 years and with the BMI of 26.49 ±4.49. Health training at 50–66% VO2max took place twice a week for 9 months. In the baseline phase and in the 3rd, 6th and 9th month of the training, body mass and composition were measured, cardiorespiratory fitness was checked after a 10-minute exercise test on a cycloergometer, and fasting levels of ghrelin, leptin and FFA in the serum were assayed and 15 minutes after the exercise test. Body mass was reduced in the 6th month of the training. Fasting ghrelin level increased because of training, leptin and FFA decreased. After single 10-minute exercises performed every 3 months level of ghrelin and FFA increased while leptin decreased. An increase in ghrelin level in the blood after the single exercise can be the result of negative energy expenditure. An increase in fasting ghrelin level after training can be one of the adaptive physiological mechanisms connected with energy saving. A mechanism that is switched on as a result of a long-lasting stimulus that leads to energy losses, reduction in body mass and a decrease in leptin level in the blood.

Opis:
Research objective. This study aimed at analysing the changes in the level of somatic indicators, the secretion profile of selected adipokines, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism indices and calcidiol concentration after a 12-week-long nordic walking (NW) exercise in middle-aged women. Research material and methods. The study included 13 women aged 45.5±4.2 years who participated in a 12-week-long NW exercise, 3 times a week, 90 minutes each. Each of the women had individually determined workout intensity zones which were monitored based on the heart rate. Prior to the exercise programme and after it, somatic traits were assessed and blood was sampled in order to make biochemical analyses. Results. In the examined women, a decrease in mean body weight by 2.5 kg and a reduction in fat mass (FM), on average by 3.8 kg (i.e. 4.6%), coupled with an increase in lean body mass (LBM) by 1.3 kg, were observed after 36 workout units. A significant decrease in TC, LDL-C and TG concentrations and no changes in HDL-C concentration occurred after the exercise, which contributed to lowered atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and atherosclerosis risk index (ARI). Conclusions. Individualised and regular physical activity in the form of NW had a protective effect on the body, resulting in improved body composition, adiponectin secretion profile, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, and calcidiol concentration in middle-aged women.
