Fear is one of the factors that is most life threatening. it causes psychogenic illness, pro- ducing tension in the mind and in addition, distorting a person’s morals. The ambition of this paper is to outline the evolutionary processes that throughout the history of the human race have influenced the development of human thought, feeling, effect, and therefore fear as well. it further describes fear not just as genetic information, but also as information mediated by the social community and groups, as a phenomenon influenced by cultural environment.

The article presents the current state of evolutionary economics against the backdrop of changes related to the potential use of the achievements of other social sciences, in particular psychology, as well as dynamically developing neuroscience. The article suggests a synthesis of evolutionary and behavioural economics concepts as a logical consequence of evolutionary cooperation processes in social sciences. Interdisciplinary initiatives create new perspectives on generation synergy effects for all participants. Contemporary evolutionary economists present the nature of ongoing innovation-driven economic change as a long evolutionary process. The main creator of the econosphere as a global system is a man–entrepreneur who is also the result of evolutionary processes. For this reason evolutionary economics should take into account the results of behavioural economics’ research based on modern psychology and neuroscience. The cornerstone of evolutionary and behavioural economics synthesis are the theories of Adam Smith which should be regarded as his holistic intellectual heritage.

Opis:
Assembler Encoding represents a neural network in the form of a simple program called Assembler Encoding Program. The task of the program is to create the so-called Network Definition Matrix, which maintains all the information necessary to construct a network. To generate the programs and, in consequence, neural networks, evolutionary techniques are used. One of the problems in Assembler Encoding is to determine an optimal number of neurons in a neural network. To deal with this problem a current version of Assembler Encoding uses a solution that is time consuming and hence rather impractical. The paper proposes four other solutions to the problem mentioned. To test them, experiments in a predator-prey problem were carried out. The results of the experiments are included at the end of the paper.

NEO-EVOLUTIONARY PARADIGM
Opis:
The objective of this article is an analysis of the perceptive consequences of the neo-evolutionary paradigm in social studies from the point of view of human resource management in its decisional rationality aspect. The results of socio-biological, cognitive, evolutionary psychology, and behavioral economics studies have, to date, been largely ignored in management. Today, however, is seeing the laying of the structure of a new neo-evolutionary paradigm in social studies that will most probably lead to an enlightening of the field of study of human behavior, including in the realm of organization and management. Such a far-reaching change in the cognitive perspective shall also usher in significant consequences in human resource management.

The paper deals with the application of Parallel Evolutionary Algorithms (PEA) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) in shape optimization of heat radiators. The fitness function is computed with the use of the coupled thermoelsticity modelled by MARC/MENTAT software. The geometry, mesh and boundary conditions are created on the basis of a script language implemented in MENTAT. In order to reduce the number of design parameters in evolutionary algorithms, the shape of the structure is modelled by Bezier curves. Numerical examples for some shape optimization are included.

In this paper it is being argued that music might be regarded as a adaptive human behavior in the light of the evolutionary process. The author recalls here the NAPS theory of music according to which music does not prolong the existence of humanity but it might use one or many channels related to feeling pleasure which had evolved to strengthen adaptive behavior. The article recalls examples of theoreis of musical evolution connec ted to such issues as sexual choices, social integrity, development of perception, development of movement abilities, group effort, reduction of conf lict of interests, safe time consumption and communication between generations. All this evidence is being here regarded through archeological, anthropological and etological context. The conclusion of this paper is based on two assumptions. The first one is the notion that our mood is regulated through conversation and being with a friendly human. The other says that music takes and important place in this mood regulation.

Contemporary theological and philosophical ethicists posit the ability of human beings to achieve solidarity with one another on a large social scale. However, many people, including politicians and key decision-makers, have argued that this kind of solidarity is not possible. Several current anthropological theories, such as those undergirding neoclassical economic theory and the realist school of international relations, maintain that individuals and nations essentially act in their own interest. “Selfish” human nature discounts the possibility of broad and sustained solidarity. This paper addresses the question of whether or not human nature contains the potential and impulse to practice solidarity to ever greater degrees. First, it briefly defines solidarity. Next it summarizes competing views among biologists on the consistency between human nature and solidarity. Then it turns to the work of renowned evolutionary biologists David Sloan Wilson and Frans de Waal to demonstrate that solidarity may be more consistent with human nature than many acknowledge.

Opis:
The origin of major morphological innovations poses a major problem for macroevolutionary biologists. Such innovations appear to be overwhelmingly concentrated early in the history of major clades; subsequent evolution involves elaboration and variation on these early themes. Although confirmation of this pattern requires morphometric techniques only now being developed, it seems too firmly established to be an illusion. A variety of explanations have been advanced for the extensive morphologic innovation during the Cambrian radiation, including the ecospace hypothesis which relies on more extensive ecospace, and a variety of genomic hypotheses ranging from a more rapid rate of real or apparent mutation, to novel types of genetic change, or novel effects within a more plastic developmental system. Recently some theorists have suggested the inherent properties of complex dynamic systems are a sufficient explanation. However, most discussions have emphasized the ecosystem and genomic hypotheses. These have proven difficult to disentangle because no unique predictions about expected patterns have been proposed, but I suggest here phylogenetic tests which do discriminate between these possibilities. There is a curious distinction between the empty ecospace hypothesis and one variant of the developmental hypothesis: Under the former, extensive morphologic innovation should be possible whenever extensive ecospace becomes available. The constraints on innovation are atemporal and extrinsic. In contrast, under the second scenario the formation of developmental systems itself constrains further innovation. Thus the concentration of innovation early in the history of clades may stem from irreversible changes associated with the origin, rather than subsequent modification, of development.

Kevin Laland and colleagues have put forward a number of arguments motivating an extended evolutionary synthesis. Here I examine Laland et al.’s central concept of reciprocal causation. Reciprocal causation features in many arguments supporting an expanded evolutionary framework, yet few of these arguments are clearly delineated. Here I clarify the concept and make explicit three arguments in which it features. I identify where skeptics can — and are — pushing back against these arguments, and highlight what I see as the empirical, explanatory, and methodological issues at stake.

The phenomenon of globalization, which is well known in the economy, can nowadays be observed also in the area of science. It is based on the fact that more and more scientific disciplines are applying the same explanatory principle, namely the theory of evolution. Therefore, every development, including that of man, according to the pattern of genetic reproduction, takes place on the basis of natural selection. With psychological properties, mental abilities and social behaviours, which are eloquently referred to as “memes”, it is as with genes: only those that are better, stronger, more capable of surviving will survive after accidental changes and only they will be passed on. In short, reproduction regulates and controls human behaviour. Such a way of thinking and explanation can be found today in many publications on sociobiology and evolutionary psychology. Even if they present many new details, they pay tribute to the old human desire to explain everything in a simple way, according to the same scheme. The same expectation towards science was expressed by E. Haeckel in the 19th century and J. Monod in the 20th century. However, when these two biologists explained man as a whole based on the theory of evolution, they admitted that they referred to philosophy, to which contemporary representatives of sociobiology and evolutionary psychology cannot or do not want to confess.

The paper presents the application of a memetic algorithm to searching for the optimal sequence of the assembly of parts. Such approach is based on the use of an algorithm connecting two methods of global and local search in order to increase the effectiveness of the conducted optimisation process. Based on a proper representation of assembly sequences and a set of geometrical, topological and technological constraints, connected with the attributes of a product, it is possible to create an evolutionary model. Through proper control of the evolution process in a model, based on the appropriate selection of parameters, it is possible to achieve good results in a short period of time. Although the evolutionary algorithm does not guarantee the obtaining of optimal solutions, it has been proven, based on sample simulations, that such solutions are obtained in a repeated manner. The application of the presented evolutionary approach enables creating fast assembly sequence planning tools, indispensable in tactical planning and operational control of manufacturing processes.

This article describes two evolutionary methods for dividing a graph into densely connected structures. The first method deals with the clustering problem, where the element order plays an important role. This formulation is very useful for a wide range of Decision Support System (DSS) applications. The proposed clustering method consists of two stages. The first is the stage of data matrix reorganization, using a specialized evolutionary algorithm. The second stage is the final clustering step and is performed using a simple clustering method (SCM). The second described method deals with a completely new partitioning algorithm, based on the subgraph structure we call α-clique. The α-clique is a generalization of the clique concept with the introduction of parameter α, which imposes for all vertices of the subgraph the minimal percentage (α*100%) of vertices of this subgraph that must be connected with vertices of this α-clique. Traditional clique is an instance of α-clique with α = 1. Application of this parameter makes it possible to control the degree (or strength) of connections among vertices (nodes) of this subgraph structure. The evolutionary approach is proposed as a method that enables finding separate α-cliques that cover the set of graph vertices.

The central goal of the presented article is to show that the type of rationality proper to the method of the contemporary sciences yields a unique conceptual environment in which the spirit of rationality instilled to the theological thought by its encounter with the Greek philosophy finds its natural expansion. At the outset, the origins of the Greek rationality in the Ionian school of philosophy are briefly discussed in order to illuminate their adequacy for the exposition and defense of doctrine in the times of the early Church Fathers. Next, the specificity of the scholastic method of St. Thomas Aquinas briefly surveyed to indicate the nature of the unique harmony between faith and reason achieved by the Angelic Doctor. In the following step, the role of rationality in theology is gleaned through negative examples of its elimination as evident in nominalism and the subsequent Lutheran intervention. This is followed by a short discourse into of the origins and the specificity of the contemporary scientific method with particular emphasis on the method’s unique potential to expand and deepen the Greek rationality. Finally, a case study of the evolutionary theology is offered in which the implementation of the dynamic (evolutionary) picture of the Universe as the conceptual foundation opens up new and profound ways of understanding the Universe’s meaning and the meaning of man in particular. Thus the spirit of the hellenistic rationality in theology is not only preserved but also significantly enhanced.

The work is devoted to the identification of microstructure parameters of a porous body under thermal and mechanical loads. The goal of the identification is to determine the parameters of the microstructure on the basis of measurements of displacements and temperatures at the macro level. A two-scale 3D coupled thermomechanical model of porous aluminum is considered. The representative volume element (RVE) concept modeled with periodical boundary conditions is assumed. Boundary-value problems for RVEs (micro-scale) are solved by means of the finite element method (FEM). An evolutionary algorithm (EA) is used for the identification as the optimization technique.

Niching is a group of techniques used in evolutionary algorithms, useful in several types of problems, including multimodal or nonstationary optimization. This paper investigates the applicability of these methods to evolutionary multi-agent systems (EMAS), a hybrid model combining the advantages of evolutionary algorithms and multi-agent systems. This could increase the efficiency of this type of algorithms and allow to apply them to a wider class of problems. As a starting point, a simple but flexible EMAS framework is proposed. Then, it is shown how to extend this framework in order to introduce niching, by adapting two classical niching methods. Finally, preliminary experimental results show the efficiency and the simultaneous discovery of multiple optima by this modified EMAS.

The transformation process in the countries which is associated with changes in the size structure of enterprises and capital ownership, affects the economic processes, and hence also the innovative activity in the industry. That is why the main objective of the study was to look for evolving in time determinants of size class and ownership structure of industrial enterprises on their innovative activity in within the Lower Silesia industrial system, and ultimately determine the limits of the assumptions of the master structure of regional innovation networks, which take into account the specificity of the particular region. The hypothesis of the research was formulated as an assertion that innovative activity in territorial industrial systems and in their relations with the environment is significantly determined by the influence of the size and structure of companies evolving over time. Empirical and exemplificative sphere of this paper was based on a case study of Lower Silesia Voivodeship. The study was performed twice on the basis of standardized questionnaire on a group of 492 industrial enterprises in 2004−2006, and 761 subjects in the years 2010−2012. The methodological part of the analyzes was based on the theory of probability, where the dependent variable had the binary value. In the paper logistic regression is used, of which the greatest advantage is the ability to analyze and interpret the results from using the methods which are similar to the classic method of regression, on the basis of the selection scheme of the convergent variables and hypothesis testing. The results of research show that the diversity of innovative activity in the Lower Silesia region, taking into account the structure and size of businesses in the industrial system, indicates their temporal evolution and, consequently, different habits in the tested group of enterprises. Conclusions of the research suggest that these interactions are often dependent on the current stage of development of the industrial system. According to the system and evolutionary theory, responsibility for the increase of the potential and improvement of technological competitiveness of the region, will move from large business entities, through the medium towards small enterprises, and from the point of view of the nature of ownership: foreign entities towards mixed, but much slower. Owners of domestic micro-enterprises in the Polish conditions are characterized by extensive reticence in taking risks arising from innovative activities.

In the experiments, the task of vehicles–predators controlled with evolutionary neural networks was to capture a vehicle–prey behaving according to a simple deterministic strategy. All the experiments were carried out in simulation, and in order to simplify calculations in the two–dimensional environment – AUVs moved on a horizontal surface under the water.

The paper discusses the influence of learning on evolutionary processes. In biological sciences it is a well-known fact that the rate of evolution can be effected by learning and the same phenomena can also be observed in artificial evolutionary systems, however, their nature is still not sufficiently well understood. In the paper the influence of constant learning on the rate of evolution is examined. The constant learning is a kind of learning during which the genotype of the individual being taught is moved toward the global optimum over a constant value. If the fitness function is monotonic, it can be concluded from the mathematical theory that such kind of learning should decelerate evolution. However, this fact is highly counterintuitive and for this reason it should be proved by numerical experiments. In the article the results of numerical simulations are presented. They prove that evolution is indeed decelerated by learning in case of the sigmoid fitness function. Moreover, two cases of constant learning were examined in the paper. These are the positive and negative constant learning. It was demonstrated that in the case of the negative constant learning the evolution was decelerated to a larger extent than in the case of the positive constant learning. The obtained results can help explain certain phenomena concerning the impact of learning on the evolution both in natural and artificial evolutionary systems.

The solution is based on an evolutionary algorithm framework and employs tabu search to quicken the solution finding process. Hyper-heuristics are used to establish the algorithm's operating parameters. The method has been used to solve three timetabling problems with promising results of extensive experiments.

The article presents the use of an evolutionary algorithm for determining the shape of the guy rope sag of a steel smokestack. The author excludes the analysis of the operation of the rope, and discusses only the problem of determining parameters of the function of the adaption of the rope sag curve into empirical data, obtained by the geodetic method. The estimation of parameters of the curve and the characteristics of the accuracy of its adaption into experimental data were carried out by means of an evolutionary algorithm with the use of an evolutionary strategy (μ+λ). The correctness of the strategy presented in the paper, as an instrument for searching for a global minimum of a criterion function, has been presented using as an example the minimisation of a certain two dimensional function and the estimation of parameters of an ordinary and orthogonal regression function. Previous theoretical analyses have also been used for determining parameters of the guy rope sag of a steel smokestack, which is measured periodically. In addition approximate values of the pull forces in the guy ropes have been calculated.

The conditions of imprisonment in Polish prisons make it difficult to achieve the goals of penitentiary social rehabilitation. Adaptation to prison conditions, which occurs especially as a result of long-term stay in a closed-type prison, results in disadaptation to the conditions in freedom and usually leads to degradation of the prisoner’s personality. An important reason for this is the unnaturalness of a environment. It is almost totally incompatible with human nature due to its radical difference from the environment in which the human mind evolved. In the article, the authors present an initial evolutionary oriented diagnosis of environmental factors responsible for low effectiveness of penitentiary social rehabilitation. The article contains also suggestions of modifications that may increase the level of its effectiveness.

Assembler Encoding (AE) represents Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in the form of a simple program called Assembler Encoding Program (AEP). The task of AEP is to create the socalled Network Definition Matrix (NDM) including all the information necessary to construct ANN. AEPs and in consequence ANNs are formed by means of evolutionary techniques. To make AE an effective tool for creating ANNs it is necessary to appropriately organize all the evolutionary processes responsible for generating AEPs, i.e., it is necessary to properly select values of different parameters controlling the evolutionary process mentioned. To determine optimal conditions of the evolution in AE, experiments in a predator-prey problem were performed. The results of the experiments are presented at the end of the paper.
Kodowanie asemblerowe jest metodą wykorzystującą metody ewolucyjne do tworzenia sieci neuronowych. W kodowaniu asemblerowym sieci neuronowe ewoluują w wielu oddzielnych populacjach.

In this paper we present a complex strategy for the solution of ill posed, in-verse problems formulated as multiobjective global optimization ones. The strategy is capable of identifying the shape of objective insensitivity regions around connected components of Pareto set. The goal is reached in two phases. In the first, global one, the connected components of the Pareto set are localized and separated in course of the multi-deme, hierarchic memetic strategy HMS. In the second, local phase, the random sample uniformly spread over each Pareto component and its close neighborhood is obtained in the specially profiled evolutionary process using multiwinner selection. Finally, each local sample forms a base for the local approximation of a dominance function. Insensitivity region surrounding each connected component of the Pareto set is estimated by a sufficiently low level set of this approximation. Capabilities of the whole procedure was verified using specially-designed two-criterion benchmarks.

In this paper a new approach to evolutionary controlled creation of electronic circuit connection topology is proposed. Microwave circuits consisting of a tree like connection of ideal transmission lines are considered. Assuming that a reasonable number of transmission lines in a tree network ranges from 10 to 100, the number of connection combinations is immense. From the engineering practice comes the hypothesis that any device can be decomposed into some functional building blocks consisting of one to dozen transmission lines. The variety of linking combinations in a tree with a limited depth is confined to hundreds or thousands of shapes. Therefore we can decrease the dimensionality of research space, applying evolution to building blocks only. Evolutionary algorithm (EA) which processes simultaneously the population of λ functional blocks and population of ž circuits is proposed. A μ, λ selection scheme with tournament together with specific encoding of solutions, and custom operators is implemented. The μ, λ, α EA was tested on an example of the design of a microwave transistor matching circuit.

The evolutionary approach called Scatter Search, and its generalized form called Path Relinking, have proved unusually effective for solving a diverse array of optimization problems from both classical and real world settings. Scatter Search and Path Relinking differ from other evolutionary procedures, such as genetic algorithms, by providing unifying principles for joining solutions based on generalized path constructions (in both Euclidean and neighborhood spaces) and by utilizing strategic designs where other approaches resort to randomization. Scatter Search and Path Relinking are also intimately related to the Tabu Search metaheuristic, and derive additional advantages by making use of adaptive memory and associated memory-exploiting mechanisms that are capable of being adapted to particular contexts. We describe the features of Scatter Search and Path Relinking that set them apart from other evolutionary approaches, and that offer opportunities for creating increasingly more versatile and effective methods in the future.

Thus the interactions between the child and mother are adaptive in their character and as such they were not considered by evolutionary psychologists. The other factor of artification is the ritualization of those interactions. The article delivers many examples of proto aesthetic actions and artifications stressing out also the religious aspect of the phenomenon. The author concludes with the notion that artification and aesthetic agency are adaptive as such and they were just as important in the human evolution as nonverbal information transmission.

Many people underestimate the effect that unifying principles have on the study of biology. Unifying principles are used to provide simplifying assumptions to complex problems, which allow them to be effectively tackled by the tools at hand. However, erroneous unifying principles will generate simplifying assumptions that lead towards mischaracterizations of problems which inevitably lead to invalid conclusions. The unifying principles of the current Modern Synthesis of evolution are presently being challenged by the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis. However, the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis has so far failed to provide unifying principles of its own, which has caused many to question whether or not the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis is indeed a unique synthesis of evolutionary biology. Here, the concept of evolutionary teleonomy (Ernst Mayr’s concept of teleonomy applied to evolutionary processes themselves) is identified as a unifying principle of the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis. Additionally, specific examples are provided where modern research has been led astray by the unifying principles of the Modern Synthesis which would have been corrected by applying the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis with the unifying principle of evolutionary teleonomy.

Opis:
The paper presents the method for the optimal synthesis of four-link mechanism generating open/closed paths with time prescription. Although the method is suitable for both closed and open paths, it enables decreasing the number of design parameters describing dimensions, orientation and position of a path generator. Compared to the methods presented in the references, this is a one-phase synthesis method; although the number of design parameters is reduced, the method does not require affine transformations to be performed on the synthesised mechanism. The effectiveness of the method is discussed based on examples of three paths, with two taken from the literature.

The paper deals with the multiobjective and multiscale optimization of heterogeneous structures by means of computational intelligence methods. The aim of the paper is to find optimal properties of composite structures in a macro scale modifying their microstructure. At least two contradictory optimization criteria are considered simultaneously. A numerical homogenization concept with a representative volume element is applied to obtain equivalent macro-scale elastic constants. An in-house multiobjective evolutionary algorithm MOOPTIM is applied to solve the considered optimization tasks. The finite element method is used to solve the boundary-value problem in both scales. A numerical example is attached.

Pareto front
Opis:
In this paper new multicriteria design optimization methods are discussed. These methods are evolutionary algorithm based medhods, and their aim is to make the process of generating the Pareto front very effective. Firstly, the multistage evolutionary algorithm method is presented. In this method, in each stage only a bicriterion optimization problem is solved and then an objective function is transformed to the constrain function. The process is repeatedtill all the objective functions are considered. Secondly, the preference vector method is presented. In this method, an evolutionary algorithm finds the ideal vector. This vector provides the decision maker with the information about possible ranges of the objective functions. On the basis of this information the decision maker can establish the preference vector within which he expects to find a preferred solution. For this vector, a set of Pareto solutions is generated using an evolutionary algorithm based method. Finally, the method for selecting a representative subset of Pareto solutions is discussed. The idea of this method consists in reducing the set of Pareto optimal solutions using the indiscrenibility interval method after running a certain number of generations. To show how the methods discussed work each of them in turn is applied to solve a design optimization problem. These examples show clearly that using the proposed methods the computation time can be reduced significantly and that the generated solutions are still on the Pareto front.
W artykule przedstawiono nowe metody optymalizacji wielokryterialnej w projektowaniu technicznym.

The Action–Trait theory of human motivation posits that individual differences in predispositional traits of action may account for variance in contemporary purposeful human behavior. Prior research has supported the theory, psychometric properties of scales designed to assess the motive dimensions of the theory, and the utility of these scales to predict an array of behaviors, but this is the first study to evaluate the cross-linguistical invariance of the 15-factor theoretical model. This study evaluated translations of the English language 60-item Quick AIM in 5 samples – Croatian (N = 614), French (N = 246), German (N = 154), Polish (M = 314), and U.S. English (N = 490) – recruited from 4 countries (Croatia, Poland, Switzerland, and the U.S.). Exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) supported the theoretical model on which the traits of action are based and scrutinized the measurement invariance (configural, metric, scalar invariance) of the scale across the languages.

Opis:
This paper presents the current stage of the development of EA-MOSGWA - a tool for identifying causal genes in Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS). The main goal of GWAS is to identify chromosomal regions which are associated with a particular disease (e.g. diabetes, cancer) or with some quantitative trait (e.g height or blood pressure). To this end hundreds of thousands of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) are genotyped. One is then interested to identify as many SNPs as possible which are associated with the trait in question, while at the same lime minimizing the number of false detections. The software package MOSGWA allows to detect SNPs via variable selection using the criterion mBIC2, a modified version of the Schwarz Bayesian Information Criterion. MOSGWA tries to minimize mBIC2 using some stepwise selection methods, whereas EA-MOSGWA applies some advanced evolutionary algorithms to achieve the same goal. We present results from an extensive simulation study where we compare the performance of EA-MOSGWA when using different parameter settings. We also consider using a clustering procedure to relax the multiple testing correction in mBlC2. Finally we compare results from EA-MOSGWA with the original stepwise search from MOSGWA, and show that the newly proposed algorithm has good properties in terms of minimizing the mBIC2 criterion, as well as in minimizing the misclassification rate of detected SNPs.
W artykule przedstawiony jest aktualny stan rozwoju programu EA-MOSGWA - narzędzia służącego do identyfikacji przyczynowych genów w badaniach asocjacyjnych całego genomu (ang. Genome Wide Association Studies, GWAS).

This paper tackles the application of evolutionary multi-agent computing to solve inverse problems. High costs of fitness function call become a major difficulty when approaching these problems with population-based heuristics. However, evolutionary agent-based systems (EMAS) turn out to reduce the fitness function calls, which makes them a possible weapon of choice against them. This paper recalls the basics of EMAS and describes the considered problem (Step and Flash Imprint Lithography), and later, shows convincing results that EMAS is more effective than a classical evolutionary algorithm.

We investigated the relationship between borderline symptoms in women and their partner’s desire to continue the relationship and relationship commitment in an aversive living environment using an experimental design. We aimed to highlight the adaptive mechanisms of borderline symptoms, which may materialize in reproductive advantages for women in aversive contexts. We conducted two experiments to test the same hypotheses. In Study 1, online participants were assigned to the experimental group (N = 123). The experimental scenario hypothesized having a relationship with a woman high in borderline characteristics, during an aversive life environment. The control group (N = 118) hypothesized having a relationship with a woman high in borderline characteristics, during normal living conditions. We repeated the same experimental manipulation using a within-subjects design in Study 2 (N = 171). Environmental conditions influenced the desire to end the relationship with women characterized by borderline symptoms; men had a lower desire to end the relationship with their partner in aversive life events than in normal living conditions. Thus, women’s borderline behavioral characteristics may bring mating benefits in aversive living environments.
