Celem artykułu jest rekonstrukcja – na podstawie listów Elizy Orzeszkowej – relacji pomiędzy pisarką a Henrykiem Sienkiewiczem. Informacje o artystycznej i prywatnej biografii Sienkiewicza oraz jego utworach pojawiają się w epistolografii Orzeszkowej od roku 1877 i powracają aż do marca 1909 roku. Kilkuletni okres admirowania dzieł pisarza przez Orzeszkową i dystansu z jego strony kończy się w roku 1880 wskutek zakwestionowania przez Sienkiewicza wartości wileńskich wydawnictw autorki. Brak wzajemnej sympatii między pisarzami nie przeszkodził Orzeszkowej dostrzegać artystycznej maestrii Sienkiewicza. Podkreślała wszakże, że zapoznaje on filozoficzno-duchową istotę ludzkiego losu. W roku 1903, w czasie trwania antysienkiewiczowskiej kampanii, dokonała jednak jednoznacznej obrony wartości twórczości Sienkiewicza, nazywając go „artystą największym”.
This article aims to reconstruct – on the basis of Eliza Orzeszkowa’s letters – the relationship between the authoress and Henryk Sienkiewicz. Information about his artistic and personal biography as well as his works appears in Orzeszkowa’s epistolography since 1877, and returns until March 1909. Several years’ period of admiring Sienkiewicz’s works by Orzeszkowa and a distance on his part ended in 1880 as a result of the fact that Sienkiewicz questioned Orzeszkowa’s Vilnius editorial works. Lack of mutual liking between the writers did not prevent Orzeszkowa to see Sienkiewicz’s artistic mastery. She emphasized that he introduces a philosophical and spiritual essence of the human condition. In 1903, during the anti-Sienkiewicz campaign, she made an unambiguous defense of his works calling him “the greatest artist”.

The article is a linguistic analysis „Letters to Muse” by Zbigniew Herbert. It shows typical elements for this kind of genre and also individual features. Text exposes character of the letter as an act of speech which is autonomical in its structure. Article discusses coherence of the letter begining from layont going through the delamination and ending „lexical equivalent punctuation”. Author shows paradox as a specific reveal of the letters. Autonomous and coherent inside is also unindependent creation – link of dialogue, replica which takes out with natural surroundings other one. They are connection with sequence of correspondence. This language dependence realizes itself through a group of questions, imperatives, thematic-rhematic structures, indexes, limited definition nominal group, indirect speech, and other. The language of „Letters to Muse” shows a specific relation between sender and receiver. In the article the author takes notice of characteristic feature of this genre, which is „strong feeling for the receiver”, „Siamese connection” of the sender and addressee's personalities in the letter area. The partner of this dialogue has a function of text creation. The addressee is also main factor that determines the content and the formal side of the letter, although the inner dialogue of the letter sometimes comes from expressive function realised on its field and the receiver is only a pretext for showing that expressivenes.

The published letters of Z. Sarnecki illustrate contacts of both representatives of Polish literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Their beginning was connected with Z. Sarnecki’s proposal given to F. Rawita-Gawronski to cooperate in the journal “Swiat” (The World) issued in 1888–1895. Relations initiated then lasted almost until the end of Sarnecki’s life being characterized by mutual respect and kindness. These letters complement the state of knowledge on Sarnecki’s problems connected with editing the journal. They also bring information on his reaction to F. Rawita-Gawronski’s publications and certain details connected with Z. Sarnecki’s biography, especially in years 1917–1920.
Korespondencja Z. Sarneckiego i Franciszka Rawity-Gawrońskiego obrazuje kontakty obu tych przedstawicieli polskiej literatury na przełomie XIX/XX w. Jej początek był związany z przedłożoną F. Rawicie-Gawrońskiemu przez Z. Sarneckiego propozycją współpracy w piśmie „Świat”, wydawanym w latach 1888–1895. Zadzierzgnięte wówczas relacje przetrwały niemal do końca życia Sarneckiego. Cechowały je wzajemny szacunek i życzliwość. Listy uzupełniają dotychczasowy stan wiedzy o kłopotach Z. Sarneckiego związanych z redagowaniem pisma. Przynoszą również informacje o jego reakcjach na publikacje F. Rawity- -Gawrońskiego oraz pewne szczegóły związane z biografią Z. Sarneckiego, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do lat 1917–1920.

Dygasiński’s image created on the basis of his writing seems to be quite schematic. The paper is an attempt to look at the writer from a different perspective. We focus on the relationships between the writer and women who were most important in his life, namely his mother, sisters, lover, wife and daughter. Dygasiński’s private epistolography, which serves as research material, allows us to present both the portraits of the above-mentioned women and the writer’s opinions on women’s issues. It turns out that experiences connected with women had a considerable influence on Dygasiński’s life and it is possible that they influenced on the way the writer created the heroines in his novels. However, this problem needs further examination.

Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie jakim człowiekiem prywatnie był Sienkiewicz oraz jakie relacje łączyły go z członkami najbliższej rodziny. Podstawą analizy są wybrane cechy językowe (zwłaszcza formy adresatywne i leksyka nacechowana) oraz treść listów prywatnych H. Sienkiewicza. Ekscerpcja materiału objęła korpus ponad 600 listów pisanych w ciągu prawie 40 lat do sześciorga członków najbliższej rodziny. Ze względu na adresatów korespondencji i poruszaną w niej problematykę najwięcej miejsca poświecono relacjom małżeńskim i rodzicielskim. W toku badań ujawniono wiele istotnych, ciekawych szczegółów z wciąż jeszcze słabo poznanego życia prywatnego, uczuciowego Sienkiewicza.
The aim of the article is an attempt to answer the question of what kind of person Sienkiewicz was privately and what relations he had with the immediate family. The analysis is based on selected linguistic features (especially formative and lexical) and the content of H. Sienkiewicz’s private letters. The selection of the material encompasses more than 600 letters written in nearly 40 years to six immediate family members. Because of the addressees of the correspondence and the issues involved, most focus is placed on the marriage and parental relations. The research revealed many important, interesting details from Sienkiewicz’s still little-known private and emotional life.

Tematyka pojednania w 2 Kor 5,14-21 wpisana jest w szerszy kontekst Pawłowej argumentacji zmierzającej do obrony jego apostolskiego autorytetu. Kontekst ten stanowi retorycznie i epistolarnie koherentna jednostka 2,14–7,4 (list apologetyczny), której przewodnią myślą jest ukazanie tożsamości Pawła jako apostoła Chrystusa Jezusa oraz tego, czym jest posługa apostolska i jaki jest status głosicieli Ewangelii. By to osiągnąć, Paweł przedstawia kolejno: źródła swojego apostolskiego autorytetu, cierpienia i nadzieje życia apostolskiego, swoje życie jako reprezentanta Chrystusa w pełnieniu posługi pojednania. W końcu zaś wzywa adresatów do przyjęcia jego apostolskiej misji. Fragment 5,14-21 ma charakter teologicznego wywodu. Paweł przedstawia w nim swoją posługę apostolską na tle zbawczego planu Boga, w perspektywie dzieła pojednania ludzkości z Nim, dokonanego przez Chrystusa. Istotą apostolskiej posługi pojednania wg Pawła jest proklamacja kerygmatu o zbawieniu. Celem tej proklamacji jest aktualizacja tego, co dokonało się poprzez mękę, śmierć i zmartwychwstanie Chrystusa i doprowadzenie ludzi  do pojednania z Bogiem, tzn. do tego, by stali się „Bożą sprawiedliwością”.

Przedmiotem analizy są listy czeskiego poety Jana Zahradníčka wysyłane z komunistycznego więzienia do żony Marii w latach 1951–1960. Wybór to zapis zarówno życiowej traumy wynikającej z długoletniej izolacji oraz tragedii rodzinnej (śmierć dwóch córek), a jednocześnie świadectwo tego, że dzięki terapeutycznej roli pamięci autor przetrwał ów trudny czas. Punktem wyjścia są m. in. rozważania Aleidy Assmann, które co prawda prymarnie odnosiły się do pamięci kolektywnej społeczeństw dotkniętych traumatyczną przeszłością, ale mogą być także użyteczne dla rozpatrywanego tutaj studium przypadku jednostki.          
The article analyses letters written by a Czech poet – Jan Zahradníček during his stay in prison to his wife – Maria in the period 1951 to 1960. A selection not only presents a record of life trauma resulting from long-time isolation and family tragedy (death of his two daughters) but also a testimony of the poet’s memory, which enabled the author to survive hard times. Aleida Assmann’s considerations (among others) constitute the starting point for memory description. The considerations primarily related to collective memory of societies affected with traumatic past could also be useful for the analysed individual case study.

Monografia proponuje spojrzenie na epistolografię z trzech perspektyw badawczych: literaturoznawczej, językoznawczej oraz historycznej.
The article aims at a critical analysis of materials included in the eighth volume of Epistolografia w dawnej Rzeczypospolitej [Epistolography in the Former Republic of Poland]. It is a series edited by the academics from the Pedagogical University in Krakow: Piotr Borek and Marceli Olma. The eighth volume has been co-edited by Marcin Piątek. The monograph adopts a scientific approach to epistolography, analysing it from three perspectives, namely literary, linguistic and historical.

What we intend to do in this short essay is to consider part of the epistolary of Rebora as a literary object, an object that follows the condition of poetry hand in hand (at least in certain moments) and that often goes beyond it precisely at the level of daring formal and semantic. In evaluating the epistolary under the literary aspect, in its creativity so similar to writing in verse, our pourpose is to demonstrate how at the basis of Rebora’s expressiveness (or expressionism) there is a powerful endogenous drive, and that his disorder is psychological rather than cultural, or “stylistic”.
Celem eseju jest omówienie części epistolografii Rebory jako twórczości literackiej, która rozwija się idąc śladem jego twórczości lirycznej (przynajmniej w pewnych momentach), a nawet wręcz ją wyprzedza w poszukiwaniu odważnych rozwiązań na poziomach formalnym i semantycznym. Analiza aspektów literackich listów włoskiego poety, pod kątem artystycznym tak bliskich jego wierszom, służy wykazaniu, że u podstaw ekspresyjności (czy ekspresjonizmu) Rebory’ego tkwi potężny endogeniczny popęd i że nieład charakteryzujący jego twórczość epistolograficzną jest raczej natury psychologicznej niż kulturowej czy stylistycznej.

Alfred Wielopolski was belonged to a close group of people involved in creation of the beginnings scientific and cultural life in Western Pomerania. In Szczecin, with which the final connected his life after World War II, he was known above all as a devoted lecturer, inquisitive archivist, selfless social worker and activist of most scientific societies and institutions. An interesting information is that, he performed a number of important state functions in during the interwar period – such as holding the deputy chief of Wieluń, managing the Civil Secretariat of the President of the Republic of Poland or acting as the director of the Senate Office. Because of his birth, he was belonged to the strict elite of the landed gentry. In addition to diaries, from this period of his activity remained family correspondence located in the team of the Myszkow ordination of the State Archives in Kielce. It is a very valuable and interesting addition to the above memories. Reading epistolary allows us to see, what worries accompanied the young aristocrat during his studies, studies, military service and work. The materials describe happy and sad moments, they do not hide youthful weaknesses to alcohol or tobacco. They also describe love, often complicated in these difficult Times. In most cases, young Alfred shared his insights with his father, asking him for tips and advice. Description of military service and work in the state administration apparatus allows the reader to see the image, that has gone forever. This article is an attempt to quote the main content of letters interested in this period.
Alfred Wielopolski należał do ścisłego grona osób zaangażowanych w tworzenie zrębów życia naukowego oraz kulturowego na Pomorzu Zachodnim. W Szczecinie z którym ostatecznie związał na stałe swe życie po II wojnie światowej, znany był przede wszystkim jako oddany wykładowca, dociekliwi archiwista oraz ofiarny społecznik i działacz większości towarzystw i instytucji naukowych. Często umyka fakt, że w okresie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego pełnił on szereg istotnych funkcji państwowych, jak choćby piastowanie wice starostwa Wielunia, kierowanie Sekretariatem Cywilnym prezydenta RP czy też pełnienie funkcji dyrektora Biura Senatu. Z powodu urodzenia, należał on do ścisłej elity ziemiaństwa. Obok pamiętników, z tego okresu jego działalności pozostała jeszcze korespondencja rodzinna, znajdująca się w zespole Ordynacji Myszkowskiej Państwowego Archiwum w Kielcach. Stanowi ona niezwykle cenne, a do tego ciekawe uzupełnienie do powyższych wspomnień. Lektura epistolariów zezwala ujrzeć, jakie troski towarzyszyły młodemu arystokracie w trakcie jego nauki, studiów, służby wojskowej i pracy. Materiały opisują chwile radosne oraz smutne, nie kryją młodzieńczych słabostek jak słabość do alkoholu czy tytoniu. Opisują również miłość, często skomplikowaną i zawiłą w tych niełatwych czasach. W większości przypadków młody Alfred dzielił się swoimi spostrzeżeniami ze swym ojcem, prosząc go o wskazówki i porady. Opis służby wojskowej oraz pracy w aparacie administracji państwowej pozwalają czytelnikowi ujrzeć świat, który bezpowrotnie przeminął. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę przytoczenia głównej treści listów, zainteresowanym tym okresem.

In the article I focused on three among twenty-eight Polish Silesian letters from the sixteenth century published by Władysław Nehring in 1902. In order to describe them I concentrated on the letters as an example of individual languages. The function of gesture and cohesion were the subjects of my research. The analysis showed that epistolography was directly influenced by social conditions. It was the social status that determined the models of verbal and nonverbal behavior and forms of communication. The form nawiedzam zdrowie analysed in the article depicts the role of gesture which was important not only in the culture. The gesture is an essential element of writing. It has got a sufficient power to initiate indirect contact — through the letters. The analysis of Polish Silesian letters from the sixteenth century allowed me to discover cohesion. The sender of the letter could not express his thoughts. He had to follow the rules of writing a letter.

The following paper is dedicated to the topic of biblical motifs in Francesco Petrarca’s letters, which belong to an ubi leones sphere in historical literary research both in Poland and the whole of Europe. If we are to believe the modest and critical confessions made by Petrarca in his writings, the author of Canzoniere was rather slow in realising the importance of an in‑depth study of the Bible, and he regarded the awareness of this ignorance as gross negligence (damnosa tarditas), which made him blind for the inestimable value of the holy books. References to various biblical passus and pericopes in Familiares and Seniles are rarely used by Petrarca as purely elocutive ornaments or testimonies of his erudition, more frequently playing the role in the area of inventionis of an epistolary structure. From among all the biblical books, Petrarca most frequently and most willingly reached in his letters for The Book of Psalms, which he used (like Saint Augustine) in a very specific argumentation as an authoritative testimony of sapiential character. Biblical characters and motifs, as well as ‘winged words’, derived from prophetic books, the Gospels and Saint Paul’s letters are often found in Petrarca’s letters, which are deeply imbued with thoughts on ultimate matters, painful struggles with one’s own weaknesses, and a dramatical relationship between man and God.

The article puts forward the theme and style specificity of Franz Kafka’s correspondence with his parents. Firstly, the letters feature information about facts from Kafka’s biography, his existence-related choices, as well as social and religious views; secondly, they refer the reader to the figures of speech and communicative games typical of the world of literature. The metamorphoses of style found in the analysis of Kafka’s letters require the reader to see the author as a literary figure and a human being; a person who does not create borders between his literary output and everyday existence. What is more, he is a person who found space of artistic fulfillment even in the relationship with his own parents. The analysis of Franz Kafka’s correspondence in the present article was conducted in two thematic sections. First section regards the issue of the writer’s attempts to acquire housing and existential independence from his parents. The other section describes Kafka’s efforts to protect his privacy in time of his lethal illness. In the case of both thematic sections, Kafka turns out to be an excellent stylist, changing his narrative style from one attracting the addressees emotionally to one repelling them. Another writing technique, constantly present in Kafka’s epistolography is stylistic dialectic which consists in exaggerating or downplaying phenomena, facts and inner states. As a result, thanks to his literary artistry Kafka achieves predominance of literary form over biographical reality as well as of symbolic and mythical images over the univocality of his lethal illness.

The article is concerned with the meta-epistolary layer of Cyprian Norwid’s correspondence and the author’s original conception of the letter and letter-writing resulting from it. It proves the poet’s knowledge of genology, his sound expertise in history and poetics of the letter, as well as his need to transgress the conventions petrified by them, the conventions that are associated with this form of expression. In Norwid’s interpretation the letter is situated in the borderland of various fields of human activity and experience; it is created in the point where realities of life, interpersonal and social communication and the art of the word cross; it forms esthetic and extra-esthetic, extra-text values; it interferes with the course of events (that form biographies of individuals, history of nations, history of man), and first of all with the world of worth. Epistolography proves to be a significant area of Norwid’s experiments with prose; the poet joins narrative with discursive prose here, as well as with poetical and dramatic forms. However, the idea of a letter as a conversation is the key one for the poet. It is developed in numerous creative decisions made by Norwid-epistolographer, such as e.g. blurring the line between the spoken and written word; the inner conversation character of the letter; de-conventionalization of the apostrophes to the addressees and of the farewell formulas, which makes the letter close to the situation of a live conversation; exhibiting the formal imperfection of the letter and its sketchy character; limiting the role of the epistolary subject as a subject of an intimate confession, in favor of the I – You relation, a close connection between the letter and life as well as the letter and the truth. In an epistolary expression understood in this way the center of gravity rests on its inter-subjectivity, on the social value of the letter, on the inter-personal bond and its quality. Hence Norwid favors the conception of epistolary communication as symbolic actions, among which creating a community that has the Truth in its center comes to the fore. In the context of the 19th century transformations of epistolography directed to its autobiographization and, as a result, also to a communication crisis, Norwid’s conception of the letter maintains its separate identity. Preferring the conversation model of the letter, treating it as a part of life, a social form, a means of inter-human communication, of creating a community of thought, emotions and values, Norwid-epistolographer resists the tendencies typical of his times.

Humor, especially linguistic humor present in Norwid’s numerous texts, has not yet been the subject of meticulous study in the works on Norwid. What is more, in many studies it is emphasized that the categories of humor and comedy are almost absent from Norwid’s works. However, reading the poet’s writings with special attention paid to these two categories, reveals Norwid’s new image, as in many texts written throughout his life he expressed his undoubted sense of humor many times and in various ways. Also in his letters numerous examples may be found of the humorous side of people joined with situational and linguistic humor. His linguistic humor uses a lot of various mechanisms; in the poet’s letters inflectional, lexical (humorous neologisms, the use of polysemy, homonymy and paronomasia), phraseological and stylistic (based mainly on contrast and concentration) humor may be found. It should also be added that Norwid’s humor not only has the ludic, but cognitive and axiological character as well.
