The study presents an important part of fourth chapter of the monograph 'Energy Consumption in Relation to Fuel Efficiency Under Complex Driving Conditions' (2003) concerning opportunities to improve vehicle drive efficiency through application, during one phase of driving in neutral in two-phase driving cycle. Theoretical simulation of total energy consumption in vehicles with SI engine provided explanation of a relatively low fuel efficiency observed under real driving conditions in serial cars [1]. The study cites the original method of calculations developed by the author in order to calculate the efficiency of vehicle power unit in two-phase driving cycle assuming that one of the phases might be non-driving. The calculations were made for complex driving conditions, i.e. simulated changes with predefined steps for road slope (-3.5o to 3.5o), acceleration (-0.36-0.36 m/s2) and average speed (60-140 kmph) for a distance of 2x500 m. The results of calculation variants for each type of a drive system of a car proved that there are significant limitations of optimising the fuel consumption of cars. The first one is conditioned by the fact that the engine works at full dynamic load and the second one by the fact that idle running is against the 'Highway Code'.

Research of efficient and ecological parameters was carried out with compression ignition (CI) engine using diesel fuel and additionally supplied hydrogen and oxygen (HHO) gas mixture. HHO gas is produced by electrolysis when the water was dissociating. At constant engine‘s brake torque and with increasing HHO gas volumetric concentration in taken air up to 0.2%, engine efficient indicators varies marginally, however, with bigger HHO concentration these parameters becomes worse. HHO increases smokiness, but it decreases NOx concentration in exhaust gas. Numerical analysis of combustion process using AVL BOOST software lets to conclude that hydrogen, which is found in HHO gas, ignites faster than diesel fuel and air mixture. Hydrogen combustion before TDC makes a negative work and it changes diesel fuel combustion process – diesel ignition delay phase becomes shorter, kinetic (premixed) combustion phase intensity gets smaller.

This article reports the results of a study into operating parameters of a system consisting of an SI engine and a powertrain in a Fiat Panda passenger car in the conditions of a variable load. The analysis was primarily concerned with the variability of fuel consumption resulting of the changing load applied to the driving wheels in the conditions of a test performed on chassis dynamometer for manual and automatic controlled transmission gear change The test bench included a dedicated driving cycle, which was developed as cycle with periodically changed constant linear speed of the car every 10 km/h. According to the vehicle set speed, the load on its wheels was determined by the basic resistance as rolling resistance, air resistance and resistance corresponding to road inclination. Each period of a drive cycle corresponding to steady state driving gave the average instantaneous values of drive system performance indicators. The waveforms of these indicators were recorded and then averaged and presented as representative points of the powertrain system that were analysed. The focus of the study involved the identification of the points characterized with the minimum specific fuel consumption and impact of type of powertrain control on emission of CO2 from passenger car SI engines.

Internal combustion engines, used for driving of different cars, occur not only at the full load, but mostly at the part load. The relative load exchange work at the full (nominal) engine load is significant low. At the part load of the IC engine his energy efficiency r)e is significantly lower than in the optimal (nominal field) range of the performance parameters. One of the numerous reasons of this effect is regular growing of the relative load exchange work of the IC engine. The load exchange work of IC engine essentially determines the effective engine efficiency. It is directly connected with the quantitative regulation method common used in the IC engines. From the thermodynamic point of view - the main reason of this effect is the throttling process (causing exergy losses) occurring in the inlet and outlet channels. The known proposals for solving of this problem are based on applying of the fully electronic control of the motion of inlet, outlet valves and new reference cycles. The independent actuating (steerage) procedures of the ICE inlet valves should assure the adequate mass of the fresh charge, while procedures of the outlet valves are focused on the optimal exhaust gas recirculation rate, according to the engine load. The idea presented in the paper leads to diminishing the charge exchange work of the IC engines. The mentioned above problem can be solved using presented in the paper a new concept of the reference cycle (called as eco-cycle) of IC engine.

In the study AVL BOOST™ is used to perform a thermodynamic simulation of a six-stroke engine, being built by a research team based in Saudi Arabia. The six-stroke cycle consists of a standard four-stroke Otto Cycle followed by a heat recovering steam expansion cycle. Water is injected into the hot combustion chamber towards the end of the Otto expansion stroke producing steam, which is used to perform work on a piston. This process produces power using waste heat and therefore increases the overall efficiency of the engine. The Robin EY28D engine, which is a single cylinder, four-stroke, gasoline engine was used for this simulation study. The engine was modelled and converted into six-stroke engine in AVL BOOST. The results show that six-stroke engine is more efficient than four-stroke engine. In six-stroke engine, the engine power is increased by 33.1% and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) is decreased by approximately 16%. Where emissions are concerned, Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emission from six-stroke engine is reduced by 80%, while the Hydrocarbon (HC) emission increases by 85% compared with the original 4-stroke. Moreover, the most efficient camshaft was found and designed according to the most efficient valve profile for this engine, which is combination of 60CA° of valve duration and 10 mm of valve lifting.

The study examines the effect of transformation ratio in power transmission system on engine efficiency as a function of passenger vehicle velocity (m = 1400 kg) with energy-saving vehicle drive. The study also presents working range in driving phases for energy-saving speed control up to 120 km/h for a simplified overall engine performance map for SI engine. Understanding of the presented considerations can be facilitated through relating with advantages of application of non-driving phases in low engine load phases (field 4 in overall engine performance map). Working points of SI engines in engine performance maps were divided in terms of energy-saving vehicle speed control into 4 ranges. Zone l is the most economic whereas zones 3 and 4 are the least energy-saving, which was also discussed by the author in other works. The study presents the location of engine working points in overall engine performance map during energy-saving vehicle speed control within the range of 30-120 km/h using two different 6-gear gearboxes. Working range for CI engine in simplified overall characteristics in truck, the impact of speed control upon fuel consumption in real traffic conditions, sum and difference characteristics of components of drive engine unitary power, area of maximal rise in overall engine efficiency after reduction of rotational speed, simplified SI engine performance maps, covering with economic zone of working point in energy-saving drive of vehicles are presented in the paper.

In this paper, the existing methods to reduce the heat discharged by the engine were characterized and the efficiency of combustion piston engine was analysed, where it was shown the need and the potential for reducing the heat dissipated directly or indirectly to the surrounding atmosphere. The model of the engine cooling system for high coolant temperature developed through AMESim software was presented in this paper. The model of the cooling system was made based on test stand solution designed and built using original components and units diesel engine 4CT90. The simulation researches results of temperature course and pressure course were shown. In this paper was demonstrated that it is possible to maintain the assumed constant pressure of 0.3 MPa in the system and obtain it at the elevated liquid temperature leading to an increase in overall engine efficiency. These researches were carried out also on the experimental model stand, which confirmed the results obtained in simulation researches. Then 4CT90 engine test stand was described, where speed characteristics as a function of torque, power and specific fuel consumption and load characteristics as a function of the fractions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, as well as specific and hourly fuel consumption were performed. Comparison of parameters and efficiency assessment of engine interacts with a traditional and pressure cooling system. The efficiency of the engine with the pressure and a traditional cooling system was evaluated.

The work of the engine basing on the eco-cycle occurs in two 3-stroke stages; the fresh air is delivered only once for both stages, but in range of each stage a new portion of fuel is burned. Normally the charge exchange occurs once during each engine cycle realized. Elaborated proposition bases on the elimination of chosen charge exchange processes and through this the dropping of the charge exchange work can be achieved.
Silniki spalinowe, stosowane jako jednostki napędowe samochodów, pracują nie tylko przy pełnym (nominalnym) obciążeniu, ale także (najczęściej) pod obciążeniem częściowym. Względna praca wymiany ładunku silnika przy jego pełnym obciążeniu jest stosunkowo niewielka. Przy obciążeniu częściowym energetyczna sprawność ηₑ silnika spalinowego jest znacznie niższa aniżeli przy jego pełnym (optymalnym) obciążeniu, co między innymi jest powiązane z wielkością pracy wymiany ładunku w układzie. Z termodynamicznego punktu widzenia przyczyną tych zmian jest proces dławienia (przepustnica, straty egzergii) głównie na dopływie do silnika, co jest efektem tzw. ilościowej regulacji silnika spalinowego. Przygotowywane są różne propozycje rozwiązań, prowadzące do efektywnego zmniejszenia pracy wymiany ładunku przy niskich obciążeniach silnika. Jednym z proponowanych prostszych rozwiązań w tym zakresie może być zastosowanie tzw. ekoobiegu, którego idea polega na zmniejszeniu liczby napełnień cylindra. Przedmiotem analizy są możliwości realizacyjne oraz uwarunkowania eksploatacyjne ekoobiegu silnika spalinowego. Zasadniczym warunkiem branym pod uwagę, było kryterium sprawności energetycznej ekoobiegu w stosunku do sprawności istniejących obiegów klasycznych, a w szczególności stwierdzenie możliwości zwiększenia sprawności układu, głównie w zakresie obciążeń częściowych silnika spalinowego. Wskazano na sposób kontroli i dobór warunków spalania w układzie.

Effective work of internal combustion engines, which are used as the driving source ofcars, occurs not only at the fuli load, but mostly at the part load, when the energy efficiency eta e is significant lower than in the optimal (nominal field) range of the performance parameters. One of the numerous reasons of this state is regular growing of the relative load exchange work of the IC engine. Using the worked out theoretical formulas it has been calculated that the relative load exchange work can achieve value up to 40% at the part load (e.g. idle run) of the IC engine, whereby in red systems the engine speed influences the results too. As consequence of the growing of the relative load eichange work is the significant drop of the engine efficiency; from ca. 45% down to ca. 25%. The solutions of this problem are based on the fully independent control of the motion of inlet and outlet valves, whereby the optimal internal recirculation ratio of flue gases should be taken into account. Thanks to the introduction of proposed solutions the energy efficiency of the all system can usually considerably eiceeds the energy efficiency of itself combustion engine, dealt individually, though will appear the necessity of carrying of necessary investment-issues.
W pracy przedstawiono podstawowe ujęcie zagadnienia konwersji energii w układzie silnika spalinowego, co jest związane z racjonalną eksploatacją silnika spalinowego, szczególnie przy obciążeniach różnych (niższych) od nominalnych. W polu pracy każdego silnika spalinowego występuje podobszar jego optymalnej eksploatacji (najwyższa efektywna sprawność energetyczna ni e, najniższe jednostkowe zużycie paliwa be). Często się zdarza, że silnik spalinowy pracuje pod obciążeniem częściowym, a wtedy jego efektywna sprawność energetyczna r/e jest znacznie niższa, aniżeli w obszarze nominalnym. Wyrazem tego jest także obniżenie wartości stopienia doskonałości wewnętrznej eta oraz doskonałości mechanicznej eta,m silnika spalinowego. Jedną z głównych przyczyn tego stanu rzeczy, jest względny wzrost pracy wymiany ładunku. Przeprowadzone obliczenia wykazały, że względna (w stosunku do osiąganej pracy całego obiegu) praca wymiany ładunku może dochodzić do 40% (np. na biegu jałowym). W celu ograniczenia tych strat, proponuje się różne rozwiązania, np. elektroniczne, niezależne sterowanie ruchem zaworów dolotowych i wylotowych, lepszą organizację samego obiegu termodynamicznego. Dzięki wprowadzeniu proponowanych rozwiązań sprawność energetyczna całego układu może zwykle znacznie przewyższyć sprawność energetyczną samego silnika spalinowego, traktowanego indywidualnie, aczkolwiek wystąpi konieczność poniesienia niezbędnych nakładów inwestycyjnych.

The paper presents an analysis of the heat balance combustion engine, which was shown that it is possible to increase its efficiency by reducing cooling losses, such as raising the temperature of the coolant. The presented research results show that it was possible to maintain the pressure in the system, and thus the temperature of the liquid on the assumed level for a longer period by changing the intensity of cooling. The increase of coolant temperature to 120°C had an effect an increase of economy of operation and an increase in the maximum engine torque and reduced the share of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons at low load and low engine speed of its, and therefore outside the scope of the catalytic converter. Increased share of nitrogen oxides, which requires the use of additional and effectively reducing the nitrogen oxides.
W referacie przedstawiono analizę bilansu cieplnego tłokowego silnika spalinowego, w której wykazano, że istnieje możliwość zwiększenia jego sprawności poprzez zmniejszenie strat chłodzenia, np. podwyższając temperaturę płynu chłodzącego. Przedstawiono wyniki badań, z których wynika, że możliwe było utrzymanie nadciśnienia w układzie, a tym samym temperatury cieczy o założonej wartości przez dłuższy okres zmieniając intensywność chłodzenia. Podwyższenie temperatury cieczy chłodzącej do 120°C wpłynęło na zwiększenie sprawności silnika oraz wzrost maksymalnego momentu obrotowego silnika oraz spowodowało zmniejszenie udziałów tlenku węgla i węglowodorów w spalinach podczas pracy z małym obciążeniem i małą prędkością obrotową. Zwiększyły się udziały tlenków azotu, co wymaga zastosowania dodatkowego i efektywnego układu redukującego tlenki azotu.

In the present work, biofuels produced from different raw fatty materials have been proposed as a dominant fuel component in biodiesel-diesel fuel blends. Biofuels were produced from pork lard and rapeseed oil by alkali transesterification using methyl alcohol. Blends of biofuels in volumetric proportions of 60 and 80% of the biocomponent and the remaining part of the conventional fuel were used in a compression ignition engine designed for medium-duty vehicles. The experiments were conducted at two engine rotational speeds (1500 and 3000 rpm, respectively) and a set of load conditions (50, 100, and 200 Nm, respectively). The tests focused on engine efficiency parameters (brake-specific fuel consumption and brake fuel conversion efficiency) as well as exhaust gas emissions (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide were determined). The obtained results indicate that blends containing biocomponents produced from pork lard were characterized by superior fuel consumption and efficiency results, compared to blends containing biocomponents produced from rapeseed oil. In terms of exhaust emissions, biocomponents produced from pork lard were also characterized by lower emission of all of the examined components compared to rapeseed methyl ester-diesel blends. This study proposes that fuel components obtained from custom (animal) raw-fatty material can be an effective substitute for commonly used rapeseed oil methyl esters.

The article presents theoretical research of the proposed system of fully independent valve control (FIVC) of the SI engine. The analysis included controlling the movement of the intake valves, which results in adjusting the mass of the fresh charge to the current engine load, as well as the movement of the exhaust valves, where the main aim is to keep the rest of the exhaust gas in the cylinder, i.e. implementation of internal EGR. The open theoretical Seiliger-Sabathe cycle with the classic throttle regulation of load is the reference cycle for assessment of benefits and study of the effectiveness of obtaining work as a result of application of the FIVC system. A comparative analysis of the effectiveness of application of the proposed system was carried out based on the selected quantities: fuel dose, cycle work, relative work of charge exchange and cycle efficiency. The use of the FIVC to regulate the SI engine load makes it possible to eliminate the throttle and thus reduce the charge exchange work, especially in the partial load range. And this then leads to an increase in internal and effective work, which in turn results in an increase in the effective energy efficiency of an engine operation.

Opis:
Reduction of greenhouse gases emissions into the atmosphere, as well as increasing the share of renewables in the overall energy balance, forces the search for new, alternative energy sources. One of the fuels, which presents high potential for combustion engines are biomethane or biogas, with methane as the main flammable component. Biogas can be obtained from different products and using a variety of technologies which results in its wide availability and relatively easy manufacture. The largest sources of biogas can be animal farms or sewage treatment plants and waste dumps in which significant quantities of biogas are obtained as a result of naturally occurring processes. Biogas can also be obtained from processing of energy crops or waste processing in agricultural, food and meat processing plants. In this article, the possibility of using biogas as a fuel for CI engines has been examined. In such engine, combustion of biogas (methane) requires the use of dual fuel supply system, in which in addition to methane, liquid fuel is injected into the combustion chamber, in order to initiate the self-ignition of gaseous fuel. The paper presents exemplary results of the impact of the proportion of different fuels and biogas composition on the efficiency of the engine work cycle.

Opis:
Results of test bed studies of combustion engine with work possibility with application of spark ignition and combustion from ignition dose injected directly into the combustion chamber were described in this article. In engine working according to the patent solution of Prof. B. Sendyka, during start and work at low rotational speed and low load a system realizing spark ignition of homogenous mixture formed in classical way in the intake manifold is active. For higher rotational speeds and heavy load the ignition system is switched off whereas, injectors of ignition dose injecting fuel by the end of the compression stroke directly into the working space of the engine are activated. The fuel dose injected into the combustion chamber undergoes auto-ignition and in this way the combustion process in the whole volume of the homogenous combustion charge accumulated in the cylinder is initiated. The mass of ignition dose of fuel constitutes about 5 – 10% of the whole fuel mass per working cycle what differs decisively the presented solution from other known engines working according to similar principles. Application of two combustion system in four stroke combustion engine aims at combining the advantages of spark ignition a compression ignition engines. The engine is characterized by easy starting and during work at higher rotational speed and higher load in the mode of ignition from pilot dose exploitation efficiency of energy contained in fuel is higher than for spark ignition engine, this finds direct reflection in increase in total efficiency by over 9% as related to the base value.

The paper presents the experimental test results reflecting the comparative changes in the performance efficiency and emissions of the exhaust of a naturally aspirated, four-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled diesel engine due to its transition from neat rapeseed oil biodiesel to fuel blends prepared by mixing in various proportion (by volume) rapeseed methyl ester (B) and butanol (Bu). The lubricity properties of biodiesel-n-butanol fuel blends were studied using HFRR method. In contrast to previous works, the undertaken investigation is performed with a totally renewable, binary liquid biofuel blends. The purpose of the research is to reduce simultaneously the production of NOx emissions and the exhaust smoke with respect to neat biodiesel due to potentially improved homogeneity of combustible mixture and particulate matter emissions benefits suggested by the higher oxygen content (21.62 wt%) and the relatively lower carbon-to-hydrogen ratio (4.8) of the normal n-butanol. The tests revealed that the brake specific fuel consumption for the binary biodiesel-n-butanol fuel blends is always higher than that neat biodiesel produces under the same loading conditions. Maximum nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were obtained with the engine running on neat biodiesel (2290 ppm). At full (100%) load conditions, the lowest NOx emission was obtained with the engine running on a biofuel BBu20 blend. The lowest level of carbon monoxide emissions (CO) was observed, when engine running with the most butanol-oxygenated biofuel blend BBu20.The highest smoke opacity of the exhaust was obtained when the engine was fuelled with neat biodiesel and at full load.

The paper aims at reviewing the evolution of the F1 engine technology and the associated regulatory framework governing the sport over the last 10 years. Technical regulations, in force since 2014, replaced the 2.4-liter V8 naturally aspirated engines with sophisticated hybrid units such as the 1.6-liter V6 turbocharged engines supported with energy management and recovery systems. Since 2014 the fundamental trend in the development of powertrains has been the advancement of their efficiency. Due to the fact that the fuel flow rate has been restricted, the maximum performance is now entirely dependent on the engine efficiency.
W artykule zaprezentowano przegląd rozwoju technologii silników samochodów wyścigowych F1 i związane z nimi przepisy oraz regulacje w okresie ostatnich dziesięciu lat. Obowiązujące od 2014 r. przepisy techniczne wprowadziły w miejsce używanych do końca 2013 r. wolnossących silników V8 o objętości skokowej 2,4 dm3, złożone hybrydowe zespoły napędowe, obejmujące turbodoładowane silniki V6 o objętości skokowej 1,6 dm3 wspomagane przez systemy zarządzania i odzyskiwania energii. Od roku 2014 podstawowym kierunkiem rozwoju zespołów napędowych jest ich sprawność; ponieważ wielkość zużycia paliwa została zmniejszona, więc poprawa osiągów zespołów napędowych jest całkowicie uzależniona od ich sprawności.

A major problem in the combustion diesel engines is the different distribution of the mixture of air and fuel and also temperatures inside the combustion chamber. It helps the formation of points of the high and low oxygen concentration in the combustion chamber of the engine. In areas with a high concentration of oxygen, the combustion process produces very harmful NOx, and in places with low oxygen concentration, as a result of incomplete fuel combustion particles are created in the form of soot. This not regular distribution of the mixture of air and fuel and temperatures in the combustion chamber affect the limited maximum engine power and efficiency at his every operating cycle. One method for improving the combustion process is feeding into the engine air with high relative humidity. The study was conducted on a chassis dynamometer at the Department of Vehicles Engineering Wroclaw University of Technology. For the purposes of the study determined the external characteristics, including maximum engine power and maximum engine torque at different air relative humidity and quite similar air temperature. Analysis of the results of research shows that high air relative humidity has a positive effect on the work parameters of the diesel engine.

The main subject of the article is the analysis of the characteristics of a Stirling engine. The article presents a general principle of operation of the engine, its basic types and properties. The paper contains a description of the construction of a laboratory model of the engine and the results of the experimental studies. The basic criterion which guided the designing and building the engine was to maximize the energy density, efficiency, while minimizing the cost of materials – to this end the engine has been designed and constructed so as to allow replacement of particular components. The conducted experimental studies have shown that the best parameters of the engine has a cylinder made of iron, a steel flywheel and a steel radiator. The brake efficiency of the engine for this configuration was 16%.

The Stirling engine is a device in which thermal energy is transformed into mechanical energy without any contact between the heat carrier and the working gas enclosed in the engine. The mentioned feature makes this type of engine very attractive for the use of the recovery energy taken from other heat devices. One of the potential applications of Stirling engines is the use of thermal energy generated in the ship’s engine room for producing electricity. The work presents the concept of the Stirling engine type alpha powered by the recovery energy. The model of Stirling engine developed in this work allows a quantitative assessment of the impact of the design features of the engine, primarily the heat exchange surfaces and the volume of control spaces, on the achieved efficiency and power of the engine. Using an iterative procedure, Stirling engine simulation tests were carried out taking into account the variable structural features of the system. The influence of the size of the heater and the cooler, as well as the effectiveness of the regenerator and the temperature of the heat source on the efficiency and power produced by the Stirling engine have been presented.

The article describes the processes that take place in an engine. The main terms connected with the compression ratio are explained. Moreover, the relationship between the compression ratio and the engine efficiency is discussed. This paper is a repetition of issues connected with functioning of the engine. In this article, variables that influence the chart are described, along with some examples of the way to increase engine efficiency. This article focuses on selected methods of improving efficiency of internal combustion engines. In order to fully understand processes taking place in the combustion chamber, it is necessary to create theoretical charts of thermal cycles and, then, to compare them with actual charts obtained as a result of measurements. The structure of contemporary engines is influenced by various factors, for example preservation of natural environment or limited fuel resources. These factors are crucial for mechanical engineering and engine design. Therefore, energy consumption and environmental impact of engines are taken into consideration when researching new ways and methods of enhancing engine efficiency. One of the main aims of the researchers and engineers is to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in exhaust fumes. Improved engine efficiency, lowered fuel consumption and reduced emission of toxic substances are the main advantages of internal combustion engines characterized by variable compression ratio.

This article applies to searching for symptoms and diagnostic parameters pointing in a deterioration in the quality of the combustion process in marine diesel engines. It was assumed that diagnostic parameters should give clear information regardless of engine load or with respect to the mean indicated pressure. The proposed cycle and sectional net thermal (heat) efficiency characteristics and also dimensionless net heat release rate were analysed. In order to obtain the state of deterioration of the injection process simulation of discalibration (larger diameter) of injector holes was performed. The simulation was carried out by the enlarged of diameter of the injector holes form 0.375 mm to 0.385 mm. Deterioration of the formation and growth of fuel spray droplet diameter is result of such simulation. The study was conducted on a laboratory engine Sulzer Al25/30. The study was carried out according to active experiment plan, during which the selected engine failure of the injection system was simulated. Measurements of pressure of combustion were performed by means of tensometric sensors of Spice Company on the indicator valve. The analysis found that in the event of injector nozzle faults (discalibrated holes) significantly decreases the net thermal efficiency η c cycle, and there are significant oscillations of net

The paper presents a concept of a new turbine engine with the use of rotating isochoric combustion chambers. In contrast to previously analyzed authors’ engine concepts, here rotating combustion chambers were used as a valve timing system. As a result, several practical challenges could be overcome. An effective ceramic sealing system could be applied to the rotating combustion chambers. It can assure full tightness regardless of thermal conditions and related deformations. The segment sealing elements working with ceramic counter-surface can work as self-alignment because of the centrifugal force acting on them. The isochoric combustion process, gas expansion, and moment generation were analyzed using the CFD tool (computational fluid dynamics). The investigated engine concept is characterized by big energy efficiency and simple construction. Finally, further improvements in engine performance are discussed.

According to operation characteristics of the main engine 9K98ME-C7, a combined turbines-exhaust gas waste heat recovery system is proposed to recover waste heat and increase system energy efficiency. Thermodynamic models based on the first thermodynamic law and the second thermodynamic law are formulated. The superheated steam yield, the total electric power yield, the first thermodynamic law efficiency, the exergy efficiency at different exhaust gas boiler working pressure, and the variation of the exergy efficiency under different feed water temperature and different steam turbine back pressure are analyzed. Thermodynamic results indicate that the most appropriate exhaust gas boiler pressure is 0.8MPa for studied main engine and the total thermal efficiency with combined turbines arrangement has climbed up to 53.8% from 48.5%.

The maximum efficiency of the conventional spark ignition engine is 33%, in the case of diesel engines is 42%. The conclusion is that the energy contained in the fuel and "released" in the combustion process is converted into mechanical work only in a small degree. The rest of the energy is unfortunately lost by heat, friction, or used to drive the engine accessories. It should also be noted that these values are peak efficiency, which is achieved only when the engine works in optimal parameters. At most used parameters engines reach efficiency on the level of 10% to 25%. In modern cars with a hybrid powertrain are solutions that can improve the efficiency of conventional internal combustion engines. It is worth to notice that there are few ways to improve the efficiency of a reciprocating engine. The main technological trends on which research is underway are knock ignition and heat recovery from the exhaust. More development seems to be the second solution, because it can be used to design new engines such as the replacement of the alternator on the generator of electricity from exhaust heat. Besides, it will be possible to adapt these systems to in-use units, which improve the energy balance of riding vehicles. Measuring method and calculations of the impact of non-stationary work conditions of car engine torque load upon its effective efficiency have been presented in the paper. The obtained results have been compared to the already achieved results. The applied method of calculation balance and the consumed fuel enabled the writer of the paper to calculate the value of the change of unitary fuel consumption at a work point on engine performance map. The carried out examinations focus on measurements at one measuring length and so the rate of torque load at each of the four gear box ratio (2-5) can be controlled by constant final velocity of driving or by shifting or extending the measuring length against the lowest point ( the measuring length is 'U'-shaped). Finding the right solution to this problem will allow elaborating the calculation algorithm of engine effective efficiency for the examined range of engine performance maps for changeable, non-stationary work conditions. The results make it ąuite explicit that non-stationary work conditions from the engine speed and the engine load impair the effective efficiency of the engine at work in particular gears. Non-stationary mode of engine operation is essential for the higher values of gear box ratio whereas for lower values the engine load really matters.

The paper presents a new concept of the turbine engine in the area of pressure gain combustion (PGE). The engine works according to Humphrey’s cycle. Minor modification in construction has allowed power generation of 500 kW, 700 kW, 1000 kW, and 1800 kW. The concept successfully resolved the challenges related to the temporary opening and closing of the combustion chamber. The presented valve timing system has ensured effective gas flow and what stands behind it, an effective process of conversion of a high-pressure gas impulse into mechanical energy. Rotating combustion chambers enabled the application of an effective sealing system. The concept characterizes simple construction and potentially low power-to-weight coefficient. The CFD numerical analysis of the presented engine concept showed very promising effective efficiency and low specific fuel consumption.

The following paper includes adjustable ratio spark ignition engine's total efficiency analysis. Main modification of the engine is mounting of crankshaft on eccentric mechanism. Paper presents schemes of eccentric mechanism implemented in developed engine as well as adjustable compression ratio control system's block diagram. Propulsion from stepper motor is transmitted through self-locking worm gear. Value of compression ratio varies from 9.5 to 14. The main input signal for electronic control system is coming from knock-sensor mounted on the engine. If control system doesn't receive that signal it levels up compression ratio. As soon as signal appears ratio mentioned above is reduced by a value 0.05. During the investigation rotational speed of the engine was limited to nterval 1800-4000 [rpm] and throttle was partially closed. Relative increase of Suzuki engine's total efficiency presented in this paper surpasses 30 per cent. The outcome of investigation presents engine with variable compression ratio as a good prospect for the future. Constant adjustment of compression ratio with use of electronical control system allows significant improvement of total efficiency and consequently reducing fuel consumption.

The article presents results which indicate that the use of catalytic reactors to reduce emissions of harmful compunds contained in the exhaust gas is important in the operation of vehicle motors operation. Efforts of the shipbuilding industry to reduce the toxicity of exhaust gas emitted by the main engines have been indicated and pointed to the desirability of the use of these catalysts in maritime transport. It has been pointed out that studies of the harmful substances in exhaust gases performer at vehicle inspection stations have an impact on increasing the safety of drivers and other road users and contribute to preserving the natural environment by reducing the danger coming from cars operating on Polish roads. An opinion has been expressed that the most serious threats to the environment are emitted by car transport exhaust fumes, which are characterized by significant emission of toxic compounds excreted into the atmosphere from tailpipe emissions. It has been demonstrated that a fully functioning catalytic reactor, operating in a steady state at appropriate temperatures and the composition of the mixture close to stoichiometric ratio, can reduce emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides by more than 90%. Also, an assessment has been presented reporting the efficiency of catalytic reactors of spark ignition engines operating in a test vehicle inspection station. The results of research in the evaluation of their performance were correlated with their operation waveforms. Such an approach is justified by the fact that during the operation of each vehicle the wear of its assemblies and components is different – including the catalytic reactor. The catalytic layer undergoes aging so that there are changes in the structure and chemical composition of the catalyst bed, while the overlapping of layers of different chemical compounds that block access to the active layer of the reactor. An opinion has also been expressed that it would be advisable to take steps to use research results presented in this article for research of catalytic reactors similar use in diagnostic systems of marine combustion engines, especially the main ones, which exhaust emissions are incomparably greater than in the case of car engines.

W artykule opisano wybrane generacje instalacji gazowych LPG oraz podstawowe problemy związane z ich pracą. Dla samochodu osobowego z zamontowaną IV generacją LPG przeprowadzono szereg badań w które wchodziły pomiary mocy silnika, wpływ jego pracy na środowisko oraz zużycie paliwa. Dokonano analizy porównawczej wymienionych parametrów dla różnych strategii zasilania silnika ZI. Badania przeprowadzono dla zasilania silnika benzyną, zasilania gazem dla parametrów zadanych przez zakład specjalizujący się w montażu instalacji LPG oraz dla różnych modyfikacji mapy gazowej.
This paper describes some generations of LPG gas installations and the basic problems related to their operating. The research was made for a car with mounted of the fourth generation of LPG installation. The studies included comparative analysis of engine power, the impact of his operation on the environment and fuel consumption for various fuel supply strategies of the SI engine. The study was conducted for the petrol engine supply, gas supply on the parameters preset by the factory specializing in the installation of LPG fuel systems and for different modifications of the gas map.

In the article we show some appliance examples, which efficiency is over 100 %. In the internet we can find a lot of such appliances but only few of them are documentary and have got patents. Despite they were constructed recently some are now using, giving more energy safer than classic.

In 1995 as a first in the world Mitsubishi introduced SI engine with the direct fuel injection to combustion chamber GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection). Currently such a way of providing of gasoline is applied and introduced to mass production by other companies. This solution permits to burn stratified mixtures which is rich in the region of the spark plug and very lean in more distant areas of the combustion chamber. The average mixture composition of such a mixture is very poor and often incombustible. The combustion of lean mixture to some extend permits to reduce fuel consumption but limits also the possibility of reduction of NOx by the typical catalyst. Furthermore the direct injection of gasoline to combustion chamber gives the possibility of the precise dosage in each cycle. The precise control of mixture composition is possible because the injection of the fuel takes place after closure of inlet valve, so the amount of the air in the cylinder is known. The precise dosage and the dispersion of the fuel in connected with several problems. The additional information which is provided by sensors installed on the engine is very useful to solve. Gasoline direct injection fuel systems are equipped with sensors which aren't use in standard indirect systems. These problems are described in the paper with special attention paid on the accuracy of the dosage of the fuel and all problems related with this.

This paper concerns analysis of possible use of alcohols for the feeding of self - ignition and spark-ignition engines operating in a dual- fuel mode , i.e. simultaneously combusting alcohol and diesel oil or alcohol and petrol . Issues associated with the requirements for application of bio-fuels were presented with taking into account National Index Targets , bio-ethanol production methods and dynamics of its production worldwide and in Poland. The considerations are illustrated by results of the tests on spark- ignition and self- ignition engines fed with two fuels : petrol and methanol or diesel oil and methanol, respectively. The tests were carried out on a 1100 MPI Fiat four- cylinder engine with multi-point injection and a prototype collector fitted with additional injectors in each cylinder. The other tested engine was a SW 680 six- cylinder direct- injection diesel engine. Influence of a methanol addition on basic operational parameters of the engines and exhaust gas toxicity were analyzed. The tests showed a favourable influence of methanol on combustion process of traditional fuels and on some operational parameters of engines. An addition of methanol resulted in a distinct rise of total efficiency of both types of engines at maintained output parameters ( maximum power and torque ). In the same time a radical drop in content of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in exhaust gas was observed at high shares of methanol in feeding dose of ZI ( petrol) engine, and 2-3 fold lower smokiness in case of ZS ( diesel) engine. Among unfavourable phenomena, a rather insignificant rise of CO and NOx content for ZI engine, and THC and NOx – for ZS engine, should be numbered. It requires to carry out further research on optimum control parameters of the engines. Conclusions drawn from this work may be used for implementation of bio-fuels to feeding the combustion engines.

In this paper there were conducted tests of the combustion engine with the Atkinson cycle and with applying variable valve timing. There was described the 2SZ-FE engine characteristics and assigned the total efficiency before and after application of the phase shifter. Secondly, there was determined the thermal efficiency of the single engine work cycles and also engine 's total efficiency by using the optoelectronic pressure sensor and mathematical programme. After that, it was available to present the range of the variable valve timing. Atkinson system, phases of 2SZ-FE engine timing gear, the total efficiency distribution during 75 % of throttle opening and when inlet valves are open, the total efficiency increase during 75 % of throttle opening, the total efficiency distribution during 50 % of throttle opening and when suction valves are open, the total efficiency increase during 50 % of throttle opening, the total efficiency distribution during 25 % of throttle opening and when inlet valves are opened, the total efficiency increase during 25 % of throttle opening, the total efficiency distribution with application of phases shifter are presented in the paper.

Silnik Stirlinga jest urządzeniem wytwarzającym energię mechaniczną, w którym nie występuje spalanie paliwa wewnątrz cylindra. Dzięki temu możliwe jest zasilanie silnika energią z dowolnego źródła. Takim źródłem może być promieniowanie słoneczne, spalanie niskokalorycznego paliwa zachodzące w zewnętrznej komorze spalania lub energia odpadowa z innego urządzenia cieplnego, np. silnika spalinowego autobusu lub pojazdu ciężarowego. Zastosowanie urządzenia tego typu w pojeździe samochodowym umożliwi obniżenie zużycia paliwa poprzez podniesienie efektywności wykorzystania energii cieplnej powstającej w silniku spalinowym, który stanowi napęd główny. W pracy przedstawiono komercyjne przykłady silników Stirlinga, które mogą być zasilane energią odpadową, przedstawiono również projekt koncepcyjny silnika typu alfa zasilanego energią cieplną spalin oraz wyniki wstępnych analiz oporów hydraulicznych regeneratora zastosowanego w tym silniku.
Stirling engine is device generating mechanical energy without combustion fuel inside cylinder. This fact allows to supply engine from any power source. Example of such energy source can be solar radiation, combustion low-calorie carbon in outside combustion chamber or waste heat from other device like combustion engine mounted in bus or lorry. Use that kind of device in car allows to reduce fuel consumption through increase of efficiency of utilization thermal energy produced in combustion engine. The paper presents commercial solution of Stirling engines powered by waste energy and project of conceptual Stirling engine type alpha powered by flue gases from truck. The initial analysis results of hydraulic resistance in that engine have been also included.

The relations between methane/hydrogen proportions in fuel blend are presented in this paper. The research cycle carried out contains results of dynamometer chassis tests complemented with mathematical model calculations. An object of X16SZR engine installed in Opel Astra I was investigation. The engine has been equipped with additional CNG feeding system where fuel is being injected into intake manifold under low pressure. 8 fuel blends were tested with variable methane/hydrogen volume proportion (%): 100/0, 95/5, 90/10, 85/15, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 and 50/50. The feeding and ignition systems were controlled by nominal drivers. In every measuring series engine was tested in the following steady states: on idle, high speed without load and full power at discrete variable speed in range 1500…3500 rpm. The main aspect of the analysis was to identify the influence of hydrogen share on engine parameters such power, fuel consumption, in-cylinder pressure, temperature and exhaust gas composition. Very significant ecological fact possibility of CO2 emission reduction has been identified. Result of increasing content of hydrogen in fuel mixture is engine knocking. Analysis carried out on the basis of results allowed it to the point on methane/hydrogen proportion in fuel blend considering a total efficiency, emission and heat flux in parts of combustion chamber in engine.

In general, the performance of a ship in service is different from that obtained on shipyard sea trial. Apart from any differences due to loading conditions, and for which due correction should be made, these differences arise principally from the weather, fouling and surface deterioration of the hull and propeller. The influence of the weather, both in terms of wind and sea conditions, is an extremely important factor in ship performance analysis. Consequently, the weather effects needs to be taken into account if a realistic evaluation is to be made. The primary role of the ship service analysis is a standard of performance data, under varying operational and environmental conditions. The resulting information, derived from this data, becomes the basis for operational and chartering decision. In addition, the part for the data records is to enable the analysis of trends of either the hull or machinery, from which the identification of potential failure scenarios and maintenance decisions can be derived. The traditional method of data collection is the deck and engine room log records, and this is the most commonly used method today. In terms of data processing and capabilities, this method of data collection is far from ultimate, since involves significant data distortion risk. Instrumentation errors are always a potential source of concern in performance analysis methods. Such errors are generally in the form of instrument drift or gross distortion of the reading. However, these can generally be detected by the use of trend analysis techniques. The procedure for the evaluation of the ship's service performance, that relies on proven methods of main propulsion engine service data analysis used and applied for container vessel - small feeder. The vessel is equipped with indirect main propulsion, driven by means of modern medium speed engine. The different approach demonstrated to achieve the reliable and accurate main engine performance. The difference in developed engine power has been found, that corresponds well to registered sea trial results and engine retrofitting reports done, in order to limit the effective power.

The article presents the results of tests carried out on a single-cylinder of spark-ignition engine. The charge exchange process in the combustion chamber is very important to determine the possibility of improving the overall efficiency of the engine. Describes of impact modifications engine on open indicator diagrams. Open indicator diagrams show that the higher compression ratio is assumed, the higher the pressure in the system is. First parts of the research describes analysis of charge exchange on not working engine. Results of research presents different open indicators diagrams. Then the pressure results were obtained on the working engine. The possibilities of improving the overall efficiency of the engine by reducing the pumping loss, associated with the replacement of the air fuel mixture, were presented. The article describes the modification of a spark-ignition engine that affects the pressure change in the combustion chamber. The use of innovative methods of regulating the compression pressure gives a lot of positive effects.

Cogeneration can be defined as the general production of thermodynamic heat and electricity from a single initial source of energy. The device, in which the process of cogeneration occurs, is called cogeneration device. Cogeneration changes separated electric energy and heat production. The separation of electric energy and heat production is characterized by substantial energy losses of initial fuel. In the separated power generation, the user receives the electric energy, which is produced by the large-scale power plants and heat is produced in high-efficiency boilers. In this case losses make about 40% in produced heat and 60% – produced electric energy.

The future powertrains have to be properly assessed in early stages of vehicle design using simple and fast but reliable tools. The aim of the paper is to develop a simulation tool suitable for any of current transient cycles for finding of upper limits of tank-to-wheel efficiencies of recent or future vehicle powertrains in different concepts of vehicles to assess their potential, to find gaps between the state-of-the-art and to find ways to bridge them. The simulation philosophy and procedure may be described in the following steps. The testing cycle power demands on vehicle movement are analyzed and the optimum operation efficiency of a primary mover (engine, fuel cell, electric motor) is assigned to them. Dynamic torques at powertrain are accounted for. Speed, speed slip (driving machine/wheels) and load dependencies of transmission efficiency are simulated by simple models. In the case of a hybrid solution, charging and discharging efficiencies of energy accumulators and additional losses (e.g., in converters and inverters) are considered. The clear modular structure of the simulation tool enables the researcher to amend new features of powertrain components. The links to more detailed simulation tools are prepared. The simulation tool is described by regression and algebraic models (based on the results of higher level simulation tools) in a way giving immediate response during sensitivity analysis. The examples of tool calibration for different powertrains and results comparing powertrain potential are presented for lower medium class passenger car. The current simulation tool creates a useful link between detailed and accurate but CPU time demanding 1-D tools, based on partial differential equations, and rules-of-thumb, used sometimes for initial potential assessments. Moreover, the described tool does not require detailed data on the powertrain during early stage of design but it shows its potential for further development.

The research presents a review and comparison of different engine constructions. Investigated engines included crankshaft engines, barrel engine, opposed-piston engines and theoretical models to present possible variations of piston motion curves. The work comprises also detailed description of a numerical piston engine model which was created to determine the impact of the cycle parameters including described different piston motion curves on the engine efficiency. Developed model was equipped with Wiebe function to reflect a heat release during combustion event and Woschini’s correlation to simulate heat transfer between the gas and engine components.Various scenarios of selected engine constructions and different working conditions have been simulated and compared. Based on the results it was possible to determine the impact of different piston motion curves on the engine cycle process and present potential efficiency benefits.

The paper considers the issue of thermo-chemical recovery of engine’s waste heat and its further use for steam conversion of the associated gas for oil and gas floating units. The characteristics of the associated gas are presented, and problems of its application in dual-fuel medium-speed internal combustion engines are discussed. Various variants of combined diesel-gas turbine power plant with thermo-chemical heat recovery are analyzed. The heat of the gas turbine engine exhaust gas is utilized in a thermo-chemical reactor and a steam generator. The engines operate on synthesis gas, which is obtained as a result of steam conversion of the associated gas. Criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the developed schemes are proposed. The results of mathematical modeling of processes in a 14.1 MW diesel-gas turbine power plant with waste heat recovery are presented. The effect of the steam/associated gas ratio on the efficiency criteria is analyzed. The obtained results indicate relatively high effectiveness of the scheme with separate high and low pressure thermo-chemical reactors for producing fuel gas for both gas turbine and internal combustion engines. The calculated efficiency of such a power plant for considered input parameters is 45.6%.

Specific features of air inlet system of BWP-1 vehicle UTD-20 engine are shown. The tests results of filtration efficiency and air flow drag for BWP-1 vehicle air filter standard version are presented. The necessity of UTD-20 engine air supplying system constructional changes are proved. The inlet air filtration system for BWP-1 engine with the porous filter was proposed and performed. The characteristics of the air purification efficiency (fi=f(mp) and flow drag Delta p- f(mp) Delta p= f(Omega c) for designed air filter were determined. Absorbency of filter for air nominal stream of engine BWP-1 was specified. The designed and executed partition air filter was subjected to comparative tests on an engine test bench. The influence of modernized air filter and fuel dose increase on engine effective parameters were determined. The tests covered comparison of effective parameters (determined for maximum load) of a UTD-20 engine equipped with a standard air filter (variant 1), a modernized air filter (variant 2) and additionally, for the modernized air filter, with injection pump with fuel dose increased (variant 3). There were determined the influence the proposed changes on indicated and effective torque during engine free acceleration and its mechanical efficiency as well.

The paper describes design of the five-stroke engine developed in the Chair of Combustion Engines at Cracow University of Technology. The idea of five-stroke engine, in which the expansion ratio is significantly greater than the compression ratio has been presented by the Belgian engineer Gerhard Schmitz. The prototype of such an engine was made by Ilmor Engineering. Engine developers have released results of preliminary research, but there is no detailed information on the toxic exhaust emissions. For this reason, at Cracow University of Technology the research was undertaken to determine the impact of implementing the five-stroke cycle into the engine with spark ignition to reduce toxic emissions and increase total efficiency. To achieve this goal, the test engine was built, which is based on a concept similar to the idea of Gerhard Schmitz, with the difference that it has not been designed from the ground up, and it is based on an existing four-cylinder four-stroke engine. In comparison with the original solution, the engine built in Cracow has a completely different design of timing system, four valves per cylinder and petrol direct injection. This paper presents a detailed description of the engine design and the results of its preliminary research. The results of the tests of the five-stroke engine confirm an increase of specific torque and power (related to unit of engine displacement) and improve of total efficiency within a certain range of the engine map.

This paper discusses the methodologies to investigate the efficiency of on-board electricity generation in the city bus. The research object, i.e. the Mercedes Conecto was tested under steady conditions. A chassis dynamometer, i.e. the MAHA LPS 3000 LKW provided the same conditions during the entire research. The paper presents the samples of the measurements performed at a single operating point of a given crankshaft speed and torque. This operating point was specified in line with the guidelines for the WHSC test. In our study, an electrical load was changed with an extra receiver, or a light bulb, at a fixed amount of fuel. The electrical loads were 0.4 kW, 1.6 kW and 2.8 kW. The research results enabled us to specify the amount of fuel to generate 1 kWh of electrical energy.

Opis:
The factor of thermal efficiency, used for the assessement of the use of heat in the diesel engine working cycles, has been based on the the first law of thermodynamics only. This paper indicates the fact that to achieve more comprehensive thermodynamic analyses it is necessary to use factors based on the two laws of thermodynamics. One such factor herein proposed is the exoergic efficiency. The method for the determination of this factor for the main engine is presented. Original relations involving the exoergic efficiency are set out. The factor depends on the ambient temperature.

In the paper are presented comparative tests of combustion of gasoline and combustion of methanol in spark ignition engine of the Fiat 1100 MPI type. The engine was equipped with a prototype suction manifold with duplex injectors on each cylinder. Implemented system enabled dual fuel operation of the engine with any fraction of the alcohol. Engine performance and start-up capabilities were the same like in case of the operation on gasoline only. Type and parameters of the fuel supply can be changed in any time during operation of the engine. The study dealt with comparison of a selected parameters used to assessment of combustion of the fuels: pressure of the working medium p, rate of pressure rise dp/d, heat release rate dQ/d, temperature of the working medium, and combustion angle. The investigations pointed at considerable differences in run of combustion of the gasoline and combustion of the methanol, as autonomous fuels. Moreover, addition of methanol to gasoline results in considerable differences in combustion process, comparing to combustion of gasoline mixtures. The combustion goes on more dynamically, especially during initial phase of the process, while total time of the combustion is shorter. Effects of these changes are: higher maximal pressures, faster rates of pressure growth and heat release. Extent of change of combustion parameters depends on methanol fraction in total dose of the fuel supplied to the engine. Addition of the methanol effects in growth of general efficiency of the engine, which increases together with growth of methanol fraction and engine load. Absolute growth of the efficiency amounted to 2-5%, while relative growth amounted to 6-16%. Such significant growth of the efficiency should lead to reduction of energy consumption during engine operation.

W pracy przedstawiono proces projektowania i implementacji systemu sterowania źródłem energii elektrycznej i cieplnej - bazującym na kogeneracji wysokosprawnej, wykorzystującej zmodyfikowany kogenerator firmy TOTEM z dodatkowym przekształtnikiem energoelektronicznym. Jego istotną częścią jest 4-suwowy silnik benzynowy o zapłonie iskrowym, dostosowany do spalania gazu ziemnego. W celu osiągnięcia maksymalnej sprawności układu, wykorzystano sterowanie prędkością obrotową jednostki spalinowej. Opracowanie "pagórka" sprawności maszyny umożliwia poruszanie się po trajektorii zapewniającej poziom sprawności uzasadniający poniesione nakłady inwestycyjne, m.in.: zakup dwukierunkowego przekształtnika energii.
In this paper, designing and control system implementation of combined heat and power TOTEM™ system was presented. The crucial part of that is 4-stroke internal combustion engine, natural gas has been adapted. Because of the maximization of efficiency, variable speed control has been implemented. The iso-efficiency curves allow to operate on minimum operation cost trajectory, makes high installation cost worth profitable.

In this paper, the results of the theoretical study of an internal combustion engine, fuelled with lean air - gas mixtures, are presented. Energetic property calculations were done for several chosen gaseous fuels such as methane, landfill gas, and producer gas. Based on these fuels, the performance of a theoretical Seiliger-Sabathe cycle was investigated using variable air excess values. The accurate analysis of the various processes taking place in an internal combustion engine is a very complex problem. If these processes were to be analyzed experimentally, it would be more expensive than theoretical analysis. The Seiliger-Sabathe cycle turns out to be help in theoretical analysis of internal combustion engine performance. Dimensionless descriptive parameters (E, psi) are very useful at this analysis by combining the properties of fuel with initial thermodynamic parameters of the cycle. Moreover, the experimental results of SI engine fuelled with a lean mixture of natural gas are presented for comparative purposes. The experiments were carried out on a petroleum engine with a low engine displacement. A typical SI engine was selected in order to evaluate the potential application of a gaseous fuel (i.e. natural gas). These types of engines are widely available and commonly used in the automotive sector because of low purchase prices and operating costs. It is expected that after minor modifications, the engine can easily operate in a low power co-generation mode. The main objective is to evaluate the performance of the engine under lean air/fuel mixture conditions. The slight impact of air excess ratio on COVIMEP was noticed. The value decreases insensibly with air excess ratio decreasing. Obtained results are located at acceptable levels for power generation sources and are less than 5 %. Although, the more distinct impact was observed regarding to COVpmax. The maximum value was noted for leaner mixture and it amounts to approximately 7.5%.
