This article presents the influence of emotions on the teaching and learning process, with particular emphasis on pronunciation classes at university level. The first chapters describe the terminological intricacies within emotions, feelings, moods etc., and then the positive and negative influence of emotions on the didactic process. The next part presents attempts to use emotions that support the learning process and to cool down difficult emotions that disorganise work in classes and negatively influence the learning process. A special case is phonetic education, which arouses many more emotions than in other classes. At the end, there is a reasonable proposal of exercises called etudes, which positively influence unwanted emotions and support emotions beneficial for the didactic process.

Background: The paper focuses on the problem of the effect of dance as a part of movement activities on human emotions and their experiencing in students. The movement activity has a positive impact not only on physical health of a human being, but also on his mental health. Movement not only serves to increase physical fitness in healthy subjects, physical activities suitably chosen can be applied in an effective way in with weakened organ systems. The movement is nowadays considered a suitable tool to eliminate excessive stress. Research results: The study summarises our research results of positive effect of dance on experiencing emotions of students that were verified and supported by medical practice that claims positive effect of movement on mental health of an individual. Our research results indicate that respondents from dance group experienced more positive emotions than the respondents from movement group. A statistically significant difference was found at the level of significance (p = 0.0425) in the respondents from dance group (Me = 16). Their frequency of experiencing positive emotions is statistically higher than in the respondents from movement group (Me = 13).

Emotion may be treated as a special sort of message considering that communicative function is one of the basic functions of emotion. Moreover emotion serves as a message in two ways. In one way facial expression of emotion is a message to other participants of social interaction that contains information about the emotional state of the subject and thus plays important interpersonal role. It shows the subject’s personal attitude and amplifies verbal messages or makes them more credible. Numerous empirical studies show that processes of generating and perceiving of facial expressions of emotions are autonomic and specific. In the other way emotion is an internal message containing information about the significance of events or thoughts and thus helping in making choices or taking decissions.

The paper presents the results of a systematic review of 61 empirical studies in which emotions in response to music were measured. The analysis of each study was focused on the measurement of emotion components and the conceptualization of emotion both in hypothesis and discussion. The review does not support the claim that music evokes the same emotional reactions as life events do, especially modal emotions. Notably, neither a high intensity of feelings, nor intentionality were confirmed in relation to musical experiences, the emergence of specific action tendencies, or specific physiological changes. Based on the obtained results, it is recommended to use the terms “affect” or “music emotions” with reference to emotions experienced in reaction to music and to abandon the term “emotions” as misleading.

This paper will address an issue that is not often discussed in the context of civic and democratic education – the shaping of political emotions. My main purpose is to outline pedagogical currents that are oriented towards cultivating the ability to identify with the suffering of the Other. This emotional identification is based on an ability to perceive structural processes that generate marginalisation and injustice and can serve as a basis for an affirmative, collective action. The thesis presented in this paper is that educational institutions should work towards fostering democratic and collective forms of subjectivity. Drawing on ideas from the existing literature I will discuss the political dimension of anger and the notion of critical pedagogy of compassion that are placed in a broader perspective of radically conceived solidarity.

This article critically addresses the contemporary study of what is called 'defensive emotions' such as fear and nostalgia among a number of social theorists. While it may be true that the collective emotions of fear and nostalgia (here framed by the phrase of 'retrotopia') may indeed be on the rise in Western liberal democracies, it is also important to be wary of taking the literature on the matter as a sign that fear and nostalgia actually permeate all levels of culture and everyday life. The article starts out with some reflections on the sociology of emotions and shows how the early interest in emotions (theoretical and empirical) among a small group of sociologists is today supplemented with the rise of a critical social theory using collective emotions as a lens for conducting a critical analysis of the times. Then the article in turn deals with the contemporary interest within varuious quarters of the social sciences with describing, analysing and diagnosing the rise of what is here called 'defensive emotions' – emotions that express and symbolize a society under attack and emotions that are mostly interpreted as negative signs of the times. This is followed by some reflections on the collective emotions of fear and nostalgia/retrotopia respectively. The article is concluded with a discussion of how we may understand and assess this relatively new interest in defensive emotions.

In our article we will try to answer the following questions: how do the teachers in the pedagogical centres and the primary schools cope with the negative emotions? What kind of techniques and strategies do the teachers use to manage their emotions in difficult situations? The theoretical background constitutes Arlie Hochschild’s theory and conception of Theodore D. Kemper. We consider whether teachers’ demonstration of emotions during their work (teaching process) is a method to achieve a fixed goal or rather a random behavior and whether an emotional expression is some instrumental operation or an accidental one? Can emotional work be considered by teachers? Do people who embody in the teacher’s role simultaneously accept the rules of behavior, including emotional behavior? Finally, whether the emotions revealed in the teachers’ work are the result of possessed power and status? As the result of conducted research, teachers employed in educational institutions revealed negative emotions more rarely towards educational reforms than the teachers working in the public schools. The basis of this regularity stems from the fact that employed staff fulfill firstly the pedagogical and later educational function in the Reformatory and Youth Detention Centres. In public institutions such as primary schools the situation is opposite. Generally, we conclude that the longer the occupational experience of the teacher, the better strategy to deal with negative emotions. Young teachers used to rely on their older colleagues experience and reflections or use a trial-and-error-method to cope with the negative emotions at work.

This article presents a new type of dictionary – a linguistic-psychological dictionary reflecting structures of language, similar to dictionaries based on associations, but also reconstructing the mental and emotional states of an average user of the Russian language. It was compiled as a result of analyzing 15918 Russian adjectives from the perspective of their relationship with emotions originating in reference to various senses. The dictionary contains information on “the emotional load” of these adjectives, that is how pleasant or how unpleasant emotions a given adjective evokes. The analyzed lexemes were assessed by respondents on the scale of emotions: slightly (un)pleasant – moderately (un)pleasant – very (un)pleasant, which was marked with an appropriate number of pluses or minuses. It cannot be overestimated how useful such a dictionary and the information it contains are. Although it is believed that representatives of different cultures experience universal emotions, their quality and intensity hidden behind particular linguistic units can diverge between different cultural-linguistic communities. Emotions are conditioned socially, culturally, and historically; they play an important role in international communication. Thus when they are incompetently and mistakenly interpreted, this can disturb dialogue between various cultures and even lead to conflicts. In the article, considering equivalents cygarowy/сигарный, differences in the evaluation of these adjectives in Polish and Russian are presented, illustrating the need to look for emotionally adequate translation equivalents when rendering them.

The paper presents state of art in the area of emotion studies. It is stressed that emotions are multicomponent processes including neural, expression, subjective and social elements. We have tried to show that synchronization and coordination of these elements from elementary through intermediate to the most complex level may be understood in terms of emergent processes. Manifestations of emergence may be observed both in social aspects of emotions, as well as subjective and expression ones. Although the idea of emergent processes was not explicitly used by contributors of this volume, the traces of it are present in their papers.

The paper provides an analysis of the impact of negative emotions on decision-making processes. It questions the common-sense view that negative emotions diminish rationality of decisions, i.e., increase the probability of making suboptimal choices. It is argued in the paper that this view is untenable on the grounds of neuroscience, cognitive science and evolutionary theory: the results provided by these sciences support the view that negative emotions in most instances of their occurrence, i.e. types of negative emotions, not only fail to undermine rationality of decision-making but substantially contribute to it. This does mean saying that token-negative emotions never undermine rationality of decision-making. But, as is argued in the paper, the fact that token-negative emotions may have sometimes this kind of negative effect is fully consistent with the claim that, as a rule, the effect is positive, so that one can speak about the causal connection between types of negative emotion and rational decision-making.

Le présent article se situe dans le cadre de la sémantique lexicale et cognitive. Il propose une approche dans laquelle on considère que la spécificité sémantique des mots est en corrélation avec leurs propriétés syntaxiques. Notre étude a pour principal objectif de dégager les traits sémantiques qui sont importants pour l’identité de tristesses, chagrin et peine. Les trois mots font partie du champ sémantique des sentiments et dénotent des émotions désagréables. Leur structure sémantique met en évidence les composantes communes à tous les lexèmes correspondant à une émotion : le nombre des actants impliqués dans le processus émotionnel, l’événement cause de l’émotion, l’intensité et la durée de l’émotion, la manifestation interne et externe de l’émotion. Ces paramètres étant universels, les différences de signification concernent la valeur des paramètres mentionnés. Notre analyse s’appuie sur le corpus formé des constructions syntaxiques, des collocations et des phraséologismes dont tristesse, chagrin et peine font partie. Les exemples sont puisés dans les dictionnaires, les textes de presse et les textes littéraires contemporains.

Utwory literackie, muzyczne, plastyczne, a także reklama mogą być badane ze względu na ich wartość stymulacyjną. Zarówno formalne, jak i treściowe cechy tych dzieł mogą wywoływać pobudzenie. W niniejszym artykule badano wpływ ekstrawersji, neurotyzmu i psychotyzmu na reakcje na reklamę o zabarwieniu erotycznym, rozumianą jako stymulującą. Badani studenci (N = 95) oglądali trzy reklamy prasowe różniące się natężeniem bodźców stymulujących. Za pomocą poligrafu Lafayette LX-3000W mierzono natężenie reakcji psychofizjologicznych (tętno, amplituda EDA, amplituda oddechu) i oceny emocjonalno-poznawcze (na skalach dyferencjału semantycznego). Prezentowane reklamy wywoływały silniejsze pobudzenie fizjologiczne u introwertyków i neurotyków niż u ekstrawertyków i u osób zrównoważonych emocjonalnie. Zrównoważeni introwerty- cy, neurotyczni ekstrawertycy i nisko psychotyczni introwertycy wysoko oceniali reklamy silnie stymulujące.
Works of art, literature, architecture, music and advertisements can all be analysed and studied with regard to their stimulating value. Formal and semantic properties of such objects can elicit arousal. In this study the associations of Extraversion, Neuroticism and Psychoticism as conceptualised by Eysenck (and measured by EPQ-R) with response to stimulating (erotic) press advertisements were examined. Three print ads were presented to 95 students. Physiological responses (EDA amplitude, pulse frequency and respiration maximal amplitude) were registered and analysed by the computer polygraph system Lafayette LX-3000W. Cognitive assessments were reported by the participants on semantic differentials. The results showed that stimulating ads elicited stronger physiological arousal in introverts and neurotics than in extraverts and emotionally stable participants. Positive cognitive assessments of stimulating ads were observed in emotionally stable introverts, neurotic extraverts and low psychotic introverts.

The purpose of this article is to compare the theoretical knowledge with parents' declarations concerning their emotional experiences resulting from the fact of having a child with autism. Main effort was made to indicate factors that affect these experiences, giving them a positive or negative meaning. Understanding the experiences that the parents of children with autism are highly probable to come across is extremely important as it can contribute to designing better supporting system for such families. It can also enhance mothers' and fathers' life satisfaction and increase effectiveness of preventive measures against the burnout phenomenon.

In the paper I examine the three aspects of Ronald de Sousa’s philosophy of emotions:intentionality, objectivity, and rationality of emotions. In the beginning, I putup the basic question, how he sees emotions? De Sousa argues that emotions are a kind of perception (perception of axiological properties). At the same time hedefends an objectivist approach to emotions. It implies that emotion apprehendssomething in the world that exists independently of us. The fundamental question,how emotions relate to their objects, leads to the inquiry on the intentional structureof emotion and, then, to the study of the truth of emotion. Finally, I reconstruct a veryimportant study concerning rationality: cognitive rationality, strategic rationality,and axiological rationality. The latter one is specific to the emotions.

Face au développement de la communication médiée par les réseaux, l’expression des émotions a subi d’importants changements. Cette contribution propose une analyse linguistique de l’expression des émotions sur internet. Afin d’examiner la façon dont l’expression des émotions peut être exploitée par l’énonciateur, l’étude a porté sur un discours propagandiste diffusé sur internet. Plus particulièrement, Dabiq et Dar al-Islam, les deux revues publiées en ligne par l’État islamique, ont constitué notre corpus. Il a été ainsi possible de voir comment les émotions, par nature spontanées, se traduisent ici en productions soigneusement formulées.
Due to the development of the computer-mediated communication, the expression of emotions has undergone significant changes. This paper proposes à linguistic analysis of the verbalisation of emotions on the Internet. The goal was to examine the way the expression of emotions can be exploited by the speaker. Therefore, the study was conducted on a propagandist discourse available on the Internet. More particularly, Dabiq and Dar al-Islam, the official online magazines published by the Islamic State, constituted the corpus of this analysis. This way, it was possible to investigate how emotions, which are spontaneous by nature, become carefully formulated productions.

Loin des principes de neutralité et d’objectivité habituellement cultivés par les médias, les émotions peuvent être au coeur même d’articles de presse quand elles relèvent à la fois du sujet et du traitement qui en est fait. Cette question de la saillance des émotions face à l’actualité a été particulièrement notable lors des attentats qui ont affectés Paris en 2015. Nous analyserons ici ce phénomène à l’oeuvre dans les titres d’articles publiés le 14 novembre, au lendemain de ces événements, quand l’information se cristallisait dans la stupeur, l’horreur et l’effroi. Nous montrerons comment l’utilisation du discours direct, en rapportant la parole de victimes, de soignants, de témoins ou de simples citoyens, a permis de construire une mosaïque émotionnelle collective, éminemment nécessaire pour appréhender la douleur avant l’étape du deuil et de la compréhension des événements qui venaient de se dérouler.
Far from the concepts of neutrality and objectivity that media erect and maintain into principles, emotions can be at the very heart of press articles when they are disseminated both from the subject and from the treatment that is made of it. This question of the salience of emotions facing the news was particularly strong during the attacks that hit Paris in 2015. We propose here to analyse this phenomenon at work in the titles of articles published on November 14, i.e. the day after these events, when the information was crystallising into amazement, horror, and dread. We will show how the use of direct speech – by reporting the testimony of victims, caregivers, witnesses or ordinary citizens – allows journalists to build a collective emotional mosaic. This emotional and emphatic journalism appears as a necessary step to apprehend pain before the following steps of mourning and understanding of the events that had just unfolded.

The affective turn is one of the well-visible so-called twists in contemporary cultural research, which also has clear repercussions for literary research. The literature discussing the phenomenon itself, especially using the methodological solutions introduced by this phrase, is extensive. These methodological solutions are particularly willingly applied to new and newest phenomena, emerging and taking place since the middle of the 20th century. However, contemporary affective research largely grows out of an interest in the emotions of old times, to refer to the works of Barbara Rosenwein. Thus, it seems fully justified to look at the broadly understood emotional phenomena in the 18th century using methods falling within the framework of the affective turn. Of course, the affective turn will not contribute to discovering the existence of new emotions in the Enlightenment Age, because research into the emotionality of this period has a long tradition, especially in the study of sentimentalism. This term prompts reflection on the network of concepts and terms in the field of emotions concerning various cultures and literature of the 18th century. The essential part of this paper is an attempt to answer the questions about what testimonies of Polish 18th-century emotionality are at our disposal today and with what methods they can be interpreted. In other words, it will be an attempt to consider what we can see – thanks to the sensitivity to emotions, also related to the methods of affective turn – in the emotional (mainly textual, but also, for example, iconic) Polish space of the second half of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.

The article presents the history of development of sociological thought on emotions and demonstrates two classic traditions of their understanding: a positivistic one, describing the duality of human nature (individual and social, emotional and rational), and a neo-positivistic one, oriented towards actions and interactions between individuals (emotions are placed in individuals). A sociological typology of emotions is presented, offering a distinction between universal emotions (primary, basic, fundamental) and secondary (socially constructed). Among many social definitions of emotions, Steven Gordon’s definition was used owing to its cultural and constructivist references. The second part of the article presents classic sociological theories of emotions and contemporary trends in sociological studies of emotions.
W artykule przedstawiono historię rozwoju myśli socjologicznej na temat emocji oraz omówiono dwie klasyczne tradycje ich rozumienia: pozytywistyczną, opisującą dwoistość natury ludzkiej (indywidualnej i społecznej, emocjonalnej i racjonalnej) oraz neopozytywistyczną, zorientowaną na działania i interakcje między jednostkami (emocje są umieszczane w jednostkach). Przedstawiono socjologiczną typologię emocji, w której wyróżnia się emocje uniwersalne (pierwotne, podstawowe, fundamentalne) i wtórne (konstruowane społecznie). Wśród wielu społecznych definicji emocji wykorzystano definicję Stevena Gordona ze względu na jej kulturowe i konstruktywistyczne odniesienia. W drugiej części artykułu zaprezentowano klasyczne socjologiczne teorie emocji oraz współczesne trendy w socjologicznych badaniach emocji.

The linguistic ways of presenting emotions such as communicating and expressing emotions in Polish medieval texts have not been the subject of linguistic analysis. The majority of the oldest linguistic relics are mostly the texts published both in transliterated and transcribed versions and may constitute a basis for large-scale research of vocabulary. Słownik staropolski 1953–2002 (The Dictionary of Old Polish 1953–2002) and resulting The Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish are a valuable help in the analysis of presenting emotions in medieval texts. The article presents the categories of concepts in The Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish that concern emotions. The autosemantic continuous and discontinuous units are assigned to 26 conceptual categories concerning emotions. The contents of the category shame from The Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish are described in order to show the way of presenting data. The general principles of the comprehensive study on communicating and expressing emotions in Polish medieval texts have been formulated.

The Knight’s Tale continues the epic tradition and is worth reading from the perspective of the history of emotions, which allows us to interpret not only texts written after the “affective turn” of the eighteenth century, but also earlier ones. Emotions can be “found” in Chaucer’s text, to mention only honour as a “lost” emotion. Other questions that need to be addressed are the weakening or empowering potential of emotions and feelings as something that is able to change collective bodies.

The subjects were 134 final-year students of Warsaw Medical University, 1st Faculty of Medicine. The purpose of the study was to measure the dominant coping strategy, moderated by positive and negative emotions, which can be important in management. The variance analysis showed that activation of negative emotions resulted in a significant rise in emotion-oriented and avoidance-oriented coping. At the same time, the level of a task-oriented strategy decreased significantly, which seems to be very important in healthcare management.
