In order to improve the pore size of the polycapro-lactone (PCL) and polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite (PCL/HAp) nanofibrous scaffolds, salt-leaching technique together with electrospinning method were applied. Salt particles were incorporated within the polymer nanofibrous matrix and then were leached out to generate some macropores. Microstructure, pore size distribution and average fibre diameter of the scaffold were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and PMI capillary flow porometer. Mechanical properties were determined by means of tensile test. Presence of hydroxyapatite and chemical characterization of the scaffold were done by FTIR analysis.

Opis:
The process of production of filtration mats of various thickness from PVC and PVDF polymers by the electrospinning method is presented in the paper. Filtration of nanoparticles and submicron particles is an important problem in industry and health protection systems, in particular in air-conditioning and ventilation appliances. This problem can be effectively solved by application of non-woven fibrous filtration mats. The experimental investigations of mechanical properties of nanofibrous filtration mats produced by electrospinning and the measurements of removal efficiency of submicron particles from flowing gas have indicated potential usefulness of these nanomats for gas cleaning of air-conditioning systems and/or ventilation ducts. The experimental results obtained for cigarette smoke of a mass median diameter of about 1 μm, used as test particles, have shown that nonwoven nanofibrous filtration mats produced by electrospinning have a good filtration efficiency for nano- and submicron particles, owing to a pressure drop similar to HEPA filters. Particles of this size are particularly difficult to be removed from the flow by a conventional method, for example, by a cyclone or electrostatic precipitator.

Novel polyurethanes based on synthetic, atactic poly[(R, S)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (a-PHB) and polycaprolactone (PCL) or polyoxytetramethylene (PTMG) diols were synthesized. It was shown that the presence of a-PHB within soft segments reduces crystallinity of PUR. Because of the low melting temperature for polyurethanes with PCL in soft segments, at this stage of work, electrospinning was limited to polyurethanes containing PTMG and a-PHB. Polyurethane containing 80% of PTMG and 20% of a-PHB was electrospun at various parameters from hexafluoro-2-propanole solution, resulting in formation of fibers with the average diameter ca. 2 μm. The fiber diameter decreased with decreasing polymer concentration in a solution and was practically insensitive to the needle-collector distance in the applied range of distances.

Opis:
Electrospinning is a simple and universal way to produce fibres from a variety of materials having diameters ranging from submicrometers to nanometers. Such fibres can be formed from resorbable and non-resorbable polymers, ceramics and their different combinations containing nanoparticles. Such a method has gained a great interest in medicine due to its ability to form a fibrous space architecture, similar to the natural extracellular matrix [1,2]. On the other hand, due to a wide range of technical facilities of electrospun fibers the method allows to create directionally-dependent space architecture of nanofibres which mimic natural tissues [3]. Considering the similarities between the microstructure created by nanofibres and the extracellular matrix, nanofibrous materials made by ES technique seem to be promising scaffolds to regenerate cartilage [4] and neural tissue [5]. A material which is used for cartilage scaffolds should mimic native cartilage, which is known to have an oriented structure associated with its mechanical and physiological functions [5]. Scaffold with a biomimetic-oriented architecture is an important requirement for tissue-engineered cartilage. In this study, PLA oriented and non-oriented fibrous scaffolds were manufactured. Selected properties of the materials were analysed and dissussed in view of the manufacture of optimal structure for cartilage tissue engineering.

Opis:
Electrospinning is a technique used to manufacture nano- and submicron fibers based on synthetic or natural polymers. Additionally, biomaterials used in the electrospinning procedure can be modified by bioactive compounds, e.g. peptides or growth factors. The microstructure of the obtained fibrous scaffolds mimics natural extracellular matrix (ECM) environment. The size and the microstructure of the fibrous scaffolds are considered to be suitable for cells adhesion and proliferation. Various design features of the electrospinning device (e.g. the shape of the collector, the shape of the nozzle, the direction of the applied voltage) or electrospinning conditions (e.g. humidity, temperature) allows to control properties of the fibers (their shape, diameter, porosity). Novel structures, such as core-shell fibers, porous fibers attracted wide attention due to their properties and functionalities. Porous fibers or fibers with nanoscaled structures can be obtained in several ways. These methods are mainly focused on using high humidity and highly volatile solvent applied in the electrospinning process. The core-shell structure can be obtained by coaxial electrospinning. That binary fiber has ability to control the release rate of drug enclosed within the shell or core. The drug release profile can be also modified by loading the pharmacological agent either directly to the spinning solution or its post immobilization. This diversity of the electrospun fibers is a reason for non-woven materials to be considered for application as drug carriers. The review of electrospinning methods presented here proves that the control over fibers surface area, morphology and the choice of polymer enable modelling of drug release kinetics.

In vitro mineralization and degradation processes were carried out in simulated body fluid (SBF) as the release medium. The weight loss of the samples, water uptakes, pH and calcium, potassium, sodium ions concentrations of the solutions were determined. The chemistry and microstructure of the membranes after different times of incubation in SBF were characterized using SEM, FTIR, and XRD methods. The results of in vitro study in SBF indicate that incorporation of n-HAp strongly activates precipitation of the apatite like materials on the surface of nanofibers.

Fibres were produced from the solutions by electrospinning. The DBC/PLA blend solutions in various ratios were studied for electrospinning into micro/nanofibres. The morphology of the micro and nanofibres was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The biggest diameters of DBC/PLA fibres were obtained for the blended microfibres in ratios of 10/90 and 25/75. The smallest diameter was observed for pure polymers. The antibacterial properties were examined for materials obtained by electrospinning. In the experiments, materials with antibacterial properties were made. It is likely that the electrospun micro and nanofibres will be used in the native extracellular matrix for tissue engineering.

Opis:
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is one of the most important piezoelectric polymers. Piezoelectricity in PVDF appears in polar b and ɣ phases. Piezoelectric fibers obtained by means of electrospinning may be used in tissue engineering (TE) as a smart analogue of the natural extracellular matrix (ECM). We present results showing the effect of rotational speed of the collecting drum on morphology, phase content and in vitro biological properties of PVDF nonwovens. Morphology and phase composition were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. It was shown that increasing rotational speed of the collector leads to an increase in fiber orientation, reduction in fiber diameter and considerable increase of polar phase content, both b and g. In vitro cell culture experiments, carried out with the use of ultrasounds in order to generate electrical potential via piezoelectricity, indicate a positive effect of polar phases on fibroblasts. Our preliminary results demonstrate that piezoelectric PVDF scaffolds are promising materials for tissue engineering applications, particularly for neural tissue regeneration, where the electric potential is crucial.

Present nanofiber technology is one of the most important objects in the recent research topics. Electrospinning is a unique technology that can produce non-woven fibrous materials with interesting characteristics such as diameters ranging from sub-micron to several nanometers, high surface to volume ratio, high porosity and small interfibrous pore size. Polymer nanofibres have great potential for technical applications in filtration, composites and electronics. Nanofibers are also of importance in many different applications as the drug delivery, biomaterials and tissue engineering. For these applications there is a great need for polymer nanofibers with well defined surface properties. In this field, plasma surface treatment has been applied in the textile industry for the modification of polymer nanofibers. In this study, chitosan nanofibers were prepared by modified electrospinning method called NanospiderTM and treated with plasma in the presence of methane gas. The surface characteristics of the nanofibers after plasma treatment were examined using contact angle measurements, SEM and XPS analysis.

Opis:
In this study, we demonstrated a method of controllably synthesizing one-dimensional nanostructures having a dense or a hollow structure using fibrous sacrificial templates with tunable crystallinity. The fibrous Ga2O3 templates were prepared by calcining the polymer/gallium precursor nanofiber synthesized by an electrospinning process, and their crystallinity was varied by controlling the calcination temperature from 500°C to 900°C. GaN nanostructures were transformed by nitriding the Ga2O3 nanofibers using NH3 gas. All of the transformed GaN nanostructures maintained a one-dimensional structure well and exhibited a diameter of about 50 nm, but their morphology was clearly distinguished according to the crystallinity of the templates. When the templates having a relatively low crystallinity were used, the transformed GaN showed a hollow nanostructure, and as the crystallinity increased, GaN was converted into a denser nanostructure. This morphological difference can be explained as being caused by the difference in the diffusion rate of Ga depending on the crystallinity of Ga2O3 during the conversion from Ga2O3 to GaN. It is expected that this technique will make possible the tubular nanostructure synthesis of nitride functional nanomaterials.

Black TiO2 nanofibers have recently emerged as a promising material that has both advantages of black metal oxide and one-dimensional nanostructure. However, current reduction-based synthesis approaches are not compatible with practical applications because these processes require high process costs, complicated processes, and sophisticated control. Therefore, it is still necessary to develop a simple and facile method that can easily introduce atomic defects during the synthesis process. This work suggests an electrospinning process with an antioxidant and subsequent calcination process for the facile synthesis of black TiO2 nanofibers. The synthesized black TiO2 nanofiber has an average diameter of 50.3 nm and a rutile structure. Moreover, this nanofiber represented a noticeable black color and a bandgap of 2.67 eV, clearly demonstrating the bandgap narrowing by the introduced atomic defects.

Neodymium-Iron-Boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnets are considered to have the highest energy density, and their applications include electric motors, generators, hard disc drives, and MRI. It is well known that a fiber structure with a high aspect ratio and the large specific surface area has the potential to overcome the limitations, such as inhomogeneous structures and the difficulty in alignment of easy axis, associated with such magnets obtained by conventional methods. I n this work, a suitable heat-treatment procedure based on single-step and multistep treatments to synthesize sound electrospun Nd-Fe-B-O nanofibers of Φ572 nm was investigated. The single-step heat-treated (directly heat-treated at 800°C for 2 h in air) samples disintegrated along with the residual organic compounds, whereas the multistep heat-treated (sequential three-step heat-treated including three steps;: dehydration (250°C for 30 min in an inert atmosphere), debinding (650°C for 30 min in air), and calcination (800°C for 1 h in air)) fibers maintained sound fibrous morphology without any organic impurities. They could maintain such fibrous morphologies during the dehydration and debinding steps because of the relatively low internal pressures of water vapor and polymer, respectively. In addition, the NdFeO3 alloying phase was dominant in the multistep heat-treated fibers due to the removal of barriers to mass transfer in the interparticles.

Fabrication of scaffolds for tissue engineering (TE) applications becomes a very important research topic in present days. The aim of the study was to create and evaluate a hybrid polymeric 3D scaffold consisted of nano and microfibers, which could be used for bone tissue engineering. Hybrid structures were fabricated using rapid prototyping (RP) and electrospinning (ES) methods. Electrospun nanofibrous mats were incorporated between the microfibrous layers produced by RP technology. The nanofibers were made of poly(L-lactid) and polycaprolactone was used to fabricate microfibers. The micro- and nanostructures of the hybrid scaffolds were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray microtomographical (μCT) analysis and the mechanical testing of the porous hybrid structures were performed using SkyScan 1172 machine, equipped with a material testing stage. The scanning electron microscopy and micro-tomography analyses showed that obtained scaffolds are hybrid nanofibers/microfibers structures with high porosity and interconnected pores ranging from 10 to 500um. Although, connection between microfibrous layers and electrospun mats remained consistent under compression tests, addition of the nanofibrous mats affected the mechanical properties of the scaffold, particularly its elastic modulus. The results of the biocompatibility tests didn’t show any cytotoxic effects and no fibroblast after contact with the scaffold showed any damage of the cell body, the cells had proper morphologies and showed good proliferation. Summarizing, using RP technology and electrospinning method it is possible to fabricate biocompatible scaffolds with controllable geometrical parameters and good mechanical properties.

Opis:
Macroporous silica fibers having spherical cavities were fabricated by electrospinning using the spinning solution prepared from the mixed dispersion of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and polystyrene nanospheres as precursor and sacrificial templates, respectively, by injection through metallic nozzle. By applying electric field, the electro-spun fibers obtained by evaporation-driven self-assembly were collected on flat substrate or rotating drum, followed by the removal of the templates by calcination. The sound absorption coefficient of the porous fibers was measured by impedance tube, and the measured value was larger than 0.9 at high frequency region of incident waves. The surface of the resulting fibers was modified using fluorine-containing silane coupling agent to produce superhydrophobic fibrous materials to prevent the infiltration of humidity.

Opis:
Polymer nanofibers are currently of great interest in terms of their potential use in various technological processes, e.g. in the manufacture of textiles or membranes. These fibers are characterized by extraordinary properties such as high surface to volume ratio and high porosity. There are several methods of manufacturing nanofibers, but for reasons of simplicity, repeatability and low cost, electrostatic spinning is the most common. The article presents a review of the latest developments in the application of polymer nanofibers in medicine, including such issues as bandage materials, release of active substances and tissue engineering.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to produce a thin SnO2 film by a technique combining the sol-gel method and electrospinning from a solution based on polyvinylpyrrolidone and a tin chloride pentahydrate as a precursor. The spinning solution was subjected to an electrospinning process, and then the obtained nanofiber mats were calcined for 10 h at 500°C. Then, the scanning electron microscopy morphology analysis and chemical composition analysis by X-ray microanalysis of the manufactured thin film was performed. It was shown that an amorphous-crystalline layer formed by the SnO2 nanofiber network was obtained. Based on the UV-Vis spectrum, the width of the energy gap of the obtained layer was determined.

Opis:
In this study, photochromic spirooxazine material of N-methyl-3,3-dimethyl-9'-hydroxy-spiro[2H-indole-2-[3H] naphtho [2,1-b] [1,4] oxazine] was synthesised. Spirooxazine/PVDF fiber (SPF) membranes with different contents ofspirooxazine were successfully prepared by electrospinning. The SPF membranes were characterised by FTIR and SEM.The photochromic properties and contact angle of the SPF membranes were evaluated. The results show that the SPF membranes change from colorless to blue whenexposed to UV light, but they revert to their original colour after the UV light disappears. The colour difference and contact angle of the SPF membranes firstly increase and then decrease with a rise in the content of spirooxazine.
W pracy otrzymano fotochromowy materiał spirooksazynowy N-metylo-3,3-dimetylo-9'-hydroksy-spiro [2H-indolo-2 - [3H] nafto [2,1-b] [1,4] oksazyny]. Za pomocą elektroprzędzenia wytworzono membrany z spiroksaksyny i fluorku poliwalildanu PVDF (SPF) o różnej zawartości spiroksaksyny. Błony SPF scharakteryzowano za pomocą FTIR i SEM. Oceniono właściwości fotochromowe i kąt zwilżania błon SPF.

Opis:
Fabrication of electro-conductive fiber is a novel process. Nanocomposites of multiwall carbon nanotube/polyamide66 were produced by electrospinning with different amounts of multiwall carbon nanotube. Field emission scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of samples proved the existence of multiwall carbon nanotube distribution in polyamide 66 nanofibers. Results showed that electro conductivity of electrospun multiwall carbon nanotube/polyamide 66 nano fiber has increased in comparison with electrospun polyamide 66. Moreover, UV blocking of samples was investigated which has shown that using multiwall carbon nanotube in polyamide 66 increases UV blocking of fibers. Furthermore, anti-bacterial activity of nanocomposite showed that these nanocomposites have antibacterial property against both Staphylococcus Aureus and Escherichia Coli bacteria according to AATCC test method.

Opis:
Stable dispersion of antimony-doped tin oxide nano-powder was prepared by wet attrition process by comminuting aggregated ATO nano-powder using the titanate coupling agent as a dispersant to form the chemisorbed layer on the particle surface. The feed solution of the ATO dispersion and PVP was prepared for electro-spun fibers on the glass substrate. The surface resistance of the fibrous ATO film after electrospinning for 30 minutes was in the order of 105 Ω/□, which is sufficient for anti-static coating. The optical transmittance of ATO fibers was confirmed by measuring the visible light transmittance.
