Ethnic conflict in the view of classical sociology and social psychology (on the example of south-eastern Borderlands of the Second Polish Republic)The article was designed to demonstrate that social conflicts, especially ethnic ones, which belong to many factors of martyrdom. Thus, it was structured at four points. The considered topics led to the conclusion that the social and ethnic issues belong to the diverse  and complex topics. It is shown in theories of classics of sociology and contemporary theoreticians dealing with the ethnic conflicts in the aspect of sociology and social psychology. Konflikty etniczne w świetle socjologii klasycznej i psychologii społecznej (na przykładzie Kresów południowo-wschodnich II Rzeczypospolitej)Celem artykułu jest wykazanie, że konflikty społeczne, zwłaszcza te, które przyjmują postać konfliktów etnicznych, stanowią jedną z wielu przyczyn martyrologii. Artykuł został podzielony na cztery części. Rozpatrywane zagadnienia prowadzą do wniosku, że problemy społeczne i etniczne są zróżnicowane i złożone, jak wykazano w teorii klasyków socjologii oraz współczesnych teoretyków zajmujących się konfliktami etnicznymi z punktu widzenia socjologii i psychologii społecznej.

„Repatriacja” przymusowa zawsze pozostawia w sercu osoby wywiezionej ślad zaznanej krzywdy. Historia, zwłaszcza wojenna oraz powojenna, niejednokrotnie ukazuje los ludzi dotkniętych koniecznością pozostawienia domu rodzinnego, dorobku całego życia, przyjaciół, środowiska. Polacy mieszkający na Kresach Wschodnich bardzo dotkliwie odczuli decyzje państwa sowieckiego ingerującego w życie wielu narodów, a także trójki jałtańskiej troszczącej się o lepszy los mocarstw nie zważając na potrzeby i odczucia narodów mniejszych. Ten artykuł ma na celu ukazać cele jakimi kierowali się rządzący decydując o masowej wędrówce ludów, także sposoby „repatriacyjne” władz radzieckich wobec narodu polskiego zamieszkującego Galicję Wschodnią oraz skutki tych działań. W zasadzie praca będzie oparta na „nieznanych” dokumentach archiwalnych, które zostały zgromadzone i wydane przez ukraińskiego historyka Włodzimierza Serhijczuka. Ukazują one nie tylko sposoby działania rządzących, ale także opisują nastroje, jakie panowały wśród zdezorientowanej ludności oraz reakcje Polaków zamieszkujących Kresy.
Forcible repatriation always caused sense of wrong. The history, especially of war and post-war periods, shows lives of people who were deprived of their family home, property, friends and environment. The Poles, who used to live in Eastern Borderlands (Kresy Wschodnie), experienced the decision of Soviet and Crimea Conference very painfully, as the allied powers cared for their own business and did consider the needs and feelings of smaller nations. The aim of this statement is to show what the aim of the Soviet government was, when it decided about the repatriation, what the ways of repatriation were and what the results of the repatriation were. This article is based on unknown archive documents, collected and published by the Ukrainian historian Volodymyr Serhyichuk. The documents show not only the ways of action of Soviet but also people reaction and feeling.

The nationality issues of interwar Poland’s eastern borderlands (Kresy) have been a popular theme in post-war Polish historiography. A considerable part of this historiography has continued the debates of interwar experts and political activists, which revolved around the two interwar censuses and the question of ethnic identity. For this reason, scholars have given priority to statistical evidence in order to determine the national belonging and categorize the inhabitants of the eastern borderlands into particular ethnic and national groups. What is more, they have drawn their conclusions on the assumption that identity is objectively definable by blood ties. I argue that peasant identity in these borderlands was driven by ‘localness’, that is, a specific symbolic universe, set of values and conventions typical of peasant culture. Thus, identity cannot be comprehensively described through ethnic categories alone. In the article, I explore some practices of localness such as the malleable roles people ascribed to others in everyday life. For large groups of peasants, they were of vital importance in the reception of nationbuilding projects.

Each inventory which refers to the actual list of quantity and value of all the assets of the entity, in this case the St. Joseph parish church in Łuniniec in 1938, is the basis for evaluation of the financial status of this parish. It contains all the data on the parish church, its furniture, paraments and liturgical vessels. It describes the parish office, produced documents of this office and all financial inflows for the parish and clergy working in it. The inventory, like the documentation confirming the parish visitation, is very authoritative and rich in information not only on the very parish, but also on the people and the prevailing relations in the parish.

Nie można zrozumieć polskiej kultury bez poznania Kresów i tego, co je tworzyło. Warto o tym przypominać, zwłaszcza młodym Polakom, którzy często nie mają świadomości, że tam kiedyś była Polska.
The Eastern Borderlands of the Polish Commonwealth used to be a Polish heartland where some of the greatest Polish admirers of the Borderlands' beauty hail from. One cannot properly understand the Polish culture without getting to know the Eastern Borderlands and that which they consisted in. One should remember it and remind of it especially young Poles, who often seem to fail to realize that the Borderlands used to be a part of Poland.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to organize the existing data on the phenomena of derivation in Polish Eastern Borderland dialects - Northern and Southern - with a short description and exemplification. Among the phenomena that differentiate both varieties of Polish Eastern Borderland dialects, those that are the result of different language neighborhood are most numerous. Certain features are the result of different source of the Polish language on the Polish Eastern Borderlands - Norhern and Southern (as -ak from Mazovia and -ę from the Lesser Poland in the names o young signifieds). In the lexical material from Polish Eastern Borderlands, the old formations, supported by foreign language influences or preserved as a result of isolation from contemporary Polish language, were recorded. A similar number of derivation phenomena, which are common to both varieties of Polish Eastern Borderland dialects (10) and specific phenomena (10 for the dialect of the Northern Polish Eastern Borderland and 8 for the Southern) are indicated in the dialect.

Artykuł jest poświęcony pewnej części, wczesnej, reporterskiej twórczości Józefa Mackiewicza. W reportażach napisanych pod koniec lat trzydziestych, przedstawił on protestanckie mniejszości religijne, bujnie rozwijące się wówczas na wschodzie Polski, lecz nie cieszące się pozytywną opinia władz i ludności otaczającej. Mackiewicz stwierdził, że wszystkie zarzuty stawiane owym sektom, są niesłuszne. Uważa on ponadto, że mogą one pozytywnie wpłynąć na stosunki społeczne. Reportaże Mackiewicza o sektach to odosobniony przykład zainteresowania tym tematem w ówczesnej Polsce.
The article is dedicated to a part of early reportage work of Józef Mackiewicz. In the reportages written at the end of 1930s, he presented Protestant religious minorities which back then flourished in eastern part of Poland, but which did not have a positive opinion among the authorities and other peoples. Mackiewicz stated that all the accusations towards those sects were groundless. He also claimed that they can positively influence social relations. Mackiewicz’s reportages on sects was an isolated case of interest in this topic in Poland of those times.

Although there would seem to be no apparent link between the English novelist Joseph Conrad and Marshal Józef Piłsudski, who restored the Polish State after World War I, they did in fact have much in common. Both hailed from the Polish eastern borderlands and both came from patriotic noble families. Both had been nurtured on the Polish Romantic poets – and Słowacki in particular. For both of them the failure of the 1863 January Uprising was a traumatic experience and both of them suffered exile in Russia. However, whereas Conrad did not believe that Poland would ever be able to regain her independence, Piłsudski led a successful armed struggle for the Polish cause, thus earning the writer’s unstinting admiration. Piłsudski for his part took pleasure in reading Conrad’s Lord Jim.

An in-depth analysis of Leonard Szutkowski’s biographical documents shows that he was an outstanding patriot who devoted most of his professional life to the economic development of Poland. He was born into a landowning family, did his military service in the tsarist army, and escaped from Bolshevik captivity. In independent Poland, he did not continue his military career but worked in the state administration as an engineer responsible for road works. He continued his engineer’s work during the Polish-Bolshevik war. Later, he managed the quarries in Janowa Dolina in Volhynia and made them a model enterprise on a European scale. He paid the highest price for his attitude to life. Until now many aspects of his activity have been unknown. Only the archive search in Ukraine made it possible to gain knowledge about views and details of his socio-political activity. The research employed a biographical method based on the analysis of personal documents. Scientific studies on particular topics related to Leonard Szutkowski were also taken into account. The research was supplemented by an analysis of press materials from the period in question.

This article presents and verifies material embedded in the awareness of users of Polish spoken in the southern part of Eastern Borderlands of the country across generations. The close relation between Polish and Ukrainian languages is conducive to the emergence of numerous interferences. Inclusion of Ukrainian features into the Polish system took place in the course of many centuries of contacts with speakers of the Ukrainian language. Ukrainian subdialects have left their mark on the Polish language in the southern part of Eastern Borderlands also in formations which deviate from the literary language. In the Polish language under scrutiny – the language spoken on the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, some formations follow Ukrainiansubdialects and the entire Eastern Slavic area. A majority of adverbs have a structure compliant with the general Polish language. However, there are also different formations, typical of borderland subdialects.

The publication presents the history of the Jodel and Pietkowski families from Odelsk (today in Belarus), whose story begins with the birth of Antoni in 1898. This article constitutes the pleasure of discovering the fortunes of the family based on interviews, reminiscences of the members of the family living in the 30s of the previous century, during the period of occupation and in the post-war times. The invaluable knowledge possessed by Adela Pietkowska, Alfreda Wojdyło, Maria Mularczyk, Anna Kopiec helped to write down the stories of these families and to perpetuate the memory of Kresy Wschodnie (East Borderlands). It was a must – to discover, listen to and tell the impermanent history. Paolo Coelho said that “The story of one person is the story of all of humanity”. This article presents the knowledge of the roots and identity of the family, describes biographies, activities and achievements of the Odelsk inhabitants against the background of the history of Poland, so that the memory of them would not disappear.

The Bolshevik offensive against Poland during the years 1919–1920 forced landowners who had lived in the Eastern Borderlands for generations to escape hastily from their estates. The formation of the Polish border in the east after the treaty of Riga made it impossible for most of them to return to their family lands. The refugees from the Eastern Borderlands were not only deprived of their houses and land, but also financial resources. They arrived in large numbers in the major cities where they tried to find work and some financial means of survival. Other landowners purchased small farms in the new Rzeczpospolita. The most attractive were farms in Pomerania abandoned by the Germans. Immigrants from the Eastern Borderlands found it hard to adapt to new conditions of life and work. Demoted socially, they indulged in nostalgia for the past and longing for their lost motherland. They felt insulted by the Polish government, misunderstood and alienated. It was frequently difficult for them to renounce their old habits in administering their estates, which meant that they often failed to succeed in the changed economic circumstances and on a much smaller area of land. Younger landowners exhibited a greater mobility and found it easier to find work. They did not feel attached to the Pomeranian land and found it easier to make the decision to leave the region.

The subject of the article is the political thought of the circles from the Eastern Borderland that functioned among the Polish wartime exiles and then the post-War pro-independence emigrants. In the introduction, the author defines such notions as Kresy (Polish Borderlands) or kresowianie, characterises those circles, and then discusses their opinions on such issues as the eastern border, attitude towards the Lithuanians, Belarussians and Ukrainians, or federalism. The author points to the diversity of the circles and the evolution of their political thought indicating the mid-1950s as an important point in their development. The final part of the article includes a reflection of its realism.
