Opis:
This article deals with the interpretation of toponyms and archaeological materials from early medieval Lesser Poland that may be associated with the Hungarians or the Khazar Kabars. So far, they have most often been interpreted as traces of invasions by Hungarians – nomads (single monuments) or the operations of watchtowers they established to control the passes through the Carpathians and subjugated the local Slavic population (the so-called Old Magyar cemetery in Przemyśl) in the late 9th and1st half of the 10th century. It could have been related to their participation in the armed squads of the Piasts or the Rurikiviks, the activities of Hungarian merchants or prisoner-of-war settlements. The dating and interpreting the so-called Old Magyar cemetery in Przemyśl remains an open issue until it is fully developed and the results published.

This article presents the research related to identifying the actual function of an object made of deer bones excavated in Kujawy, in the village of Brzezie (site 4). It was discovered in the remains of a partly dug building, most probably residential, dated back to the 12th – 13th centuries. Originally, the historic object in question was identified as an ancient percussion instrument. However, in the course of microscopic tests and experiments this interpretation was rejected. It was stated that the artefact could not have served to clean animals’ skins, either. Finally, in the course of research procedures, it was agreed that it was a tool for decorating clay vessels.

Opis:
In this article, the author takes a closer look at the finds of sea shell ornaments in the early Middle Ages, based on artefacts discovered at two sites (Nos. 2 and 4) in Kruszwica. The four pendants in question come from settlement levels dating from the 11th to the 12th centuries. A malacological analysis suggests that the ornaments reached Kruszwica from the Mediterranean area (Acanthocardia tuberculata and Bolinus brandaris), and probably the Red Sea (Monetaria moneta), and from southern Poland (Turritella sp). These objects had been in use for a long time, as evidenced by the microtraces and damage visible on their surface. During the early medieval period, among the various species of shells that were ‘imports’, money cowrie shell ornaments with the most ‘exotic’ origins were the most common in Europe. It is highly probable that during this period of time, they were used in the exchange/trade and their value as a female symbol object and an amulet. Most likely, the shell pendants reached Kruszwica via trade routes that have been previously documented, alongside other artifacts. These ornaments provide additional evidence of long-distance trade.

The article presents the latest results of archaeological studies on the 8th-10th century hillforts in the Sudetes. The authors present previously unknown structures, found through the analysis of aerial scans using the ALS method. Excavation and office studies conducted since 2005 in the Sudetes also allowed for correcting the chronology of some previously known hillfort sites. The article also presents a discussion on the structures referred to as ‘quasi-hillforts’ and those considered to be destroyed. The findings are concluded by a summary of changes in the archaeological research of the early medieval Sudetes over the last 15 years, i.e. since the publication of the last monograph devoted to hillforts in this part of Central Europe.

Stronghold at Damice, situated on the right bank tributary of the Vistula – the Dłubnia River has been known since 1911. In the years 2004 to 2006 systematic excavations were carried out by the Institute of Archaeology of the Jagiellonian University. During these excavations the course of inner moats and embankments was confirmed. They divide the surface of the stronghold into 3 units. The construction of embankments dividing the interior of the embankments was recognized. It was a single line of palisades and wooden-earth wall. From the outside embankments were preceded by "dry" moat, of a width of 2.7–4.5 m and depth to 3.7 m. The two-phased perimeter embankment was also recognized. During the research a number of features of the Lengyel Culture were discovered as well as slightly less numerous Early Medieval features, most likely functioning simultaneously with embankments and moats (i.e. in the VIII-X centuries).

Opis:
It is debatable to what extent so-called grave goods (items intentionally deposited in burials) reflect the actual level of prosperity of people inhumed in early mediaeval graves. The same applies to the types of the burial features in which they were inhumed. Whether the deceased were supplied with particular items or not – and if so, what kind of goods they were – might have resulted, for example, from the extent to which Christianity (having a unifying influence on funerary rituals) was accepted, as well as from local customs or even family traditions, the actual wealth of the buried people and individual decisions as to whether their opulence should be manifested or not. In Sandomierz, between the end of the 10th and the middle of the 12th century, there were at least three non churchyard row cemeteries. We know 20 other burial sites of this type located in the radius of 20 km from the town. An analysis of materials found in them (grave goods) indicated that in the discussed time the wealth of Sandomierz residents was similar to that of people living in the neighbouring settlements dated to the same period. This assumption, however, is not necessarily correct, because the lack of considerable differences between grave inventories might have resulted from local burial customs followed at that time. Another question is whether such customs were a continuation of earlier local traditions or whether they were shaped by the embracing of elements of Christian funerary rituals. Finally, it is also possible that they resulted from both factors.

In the gord in Kruszwica, on the settlement level from the 4th quarter of the 11th century, a piece of a large bead was discovered. It was made of black and purple glass, decorated with a set glass thread and small buttons with the (floral) millefiori ornament. It was made of glass, the “ash” variety of the Na2O-K2O-CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 type (the grains) and the Na2O-K2O-CaO-MgO-Al2O3-PbO-SiO2 type (the ornament). An interpretation of the results of an analysis of the chemical content of the glass (XRF, X-Ray Fluorescence) has allowed to define the probable place of the glass production, as well as the form and type of this rare specimen, namely the Middle East (probably Byzantine) workshops.

The closest analogies to the chape in question are dated to the second half of the 10th and 11th century. Artefacts of this type could have been produced in Scandinavia, but also in the Rus and Baltic areas. Unfortunately, we are not able to say what raw material was used to cast the artefact in question. An analysis of the metal composition of the find carried out on the surface of the artefact demonstrated that a very heterogeneous lead alloy was used, which could have also been a result of lead-bleaching. The same technology was also observed on the chapes from Ruthenia. Scholars have explained the presence of an ornithomorphic motif on the surface of the artefact in various ways

There are about 27 early-medieval hillforts in Podkarpackie Voivodeship. Due to their good state of preservation, 16 of them could become tourist attractions. The article presents the Trzcinica hillfort as an example of a tourist product. Subsequently, its genesis, concept, and manner of implementation of the Carpathian Troy Open-Air Museum were discussed. The next step was the determination of the conditions that a site should meet to become a tourist attraction of at least regional importance. Hillforts in the following locations were discussed: Budy Głogowskie, Przeczyca, Wietrzno, and Tuligłowy. The sites were compared in terms of: location, state of preservation, and the attitude towards them of their researchers or institutions that might transform them into sites that would be as popular among tourists as the Carpathian Troy. All the analysed sites offer good conditions for potential future investments. However, the essential difference lies in the attitude of researchers, who can become involved in the creative process or remain passive. The final part of the article offers thoughts on how the analysed sites could come into existence on the tourist map of Poland.

Archaeological research on site 1 in Bytkowo, Rokietnica commune, was carried out in 2010 as part of the works preceding the construction of a western section of the Poznań bypass. 1738 items, mostly related to settlements of the Lusatian culture, were discovered on the area of 295.77 ares. Relics of an early Slavic settlement were unearthed in the southern end of the excavated area; they consisted of 17 residential and outbuildings buildings located on the western slope of the Samica River valley. They constituted a continuous line of structures with the length of 110 m and the width of 18 m, stretching transversely to the valley. 1105 fragments of earthenware vessels, 687 fragments of drying pans, 105 animal bones, an iron spur with inward hooks, and a fragment of an iron sickle were acquired from the fills of the settlement pits. On the basis of the portable monuments, it was established that the discovered part of the settlement dated back to the 8th century.

Opis:
The fourth century saw the beginning of spreading Christianity among Germanic people. The mission of bishop Ulfi las, however, ended in 348 and persecuted Christian Goths fl ed to the territory of the Roman Empire. After the destruction of Gothic kingdoms, the fl eeing Goths were allowed by the Roman emperor Valens to cross the Danube, probably only on condition that they would adopt new faith. Since the emperor himself was an Arian and Arianism preferred theological teaching in the Roman Empire, the Goths, and later other East Germanic tribes, adopted this doctrine instead of Nicene Creed. Germanic people learned only the basic principles of faith and then just continued with their beliefs. Moreover, Jesus was deemed not the only God, but one of many gods. The second part of the study offers a survey of written sources on the Christianity among Germanic tribes in the Carpathian Basin in the sixth century – Rugians, Heruls, Gepids and Lombards. The Rugians led by the king Feletheus (Feva) and his Arian wife Giso dwelt on the left bank of the Danube, opposite the Roman province of Noricum, where at that time St. Severinus preached Christianity, established monasteries, organised defence or evacuation, redeemed captives, procured corn for the starving and healed the sick. Humble and pious Severinus won himself such a reputation that even barbarian kings respected him and listened to his advice and prophecies. The neighbouring Heruls, however, were pagans and sometimes invaded barely defended provinces of Noricum and Pannonia. Though their king received baptism in 528, many of them remained pagans and, according to Procopius, they were the wickedest people in the whole world. The Gepids, like Goths, converted to Arianism. The most signifi cant traces of Gepid Christianity are found in the territory of Pannonia II, especially near the Roman town of Sirmium. Sirmium was one of the most important centres of early Christianity and in the late sixth century, the town having become a seat of Gepid Arian bishop. On the other hand, Lombard Arianism is very problematical. The fi rst mention of their orthodox faith comes from Procopius. Paganism, however, was retained not only by the majority of the tribe, but also by the king and his retinue, even at the time 568 invasion in Italy. Arianism among Lombards probably gained strength only in Italy, where a number of subjugated Gepids accompanied them and where remnants of Arian Goths continued to live. From Alboin to Aripert (altogether 9 rulers) only two kings are mentioned as Arians and only two as Catholics. Though these Germanic tribes adopted Christianity in the Carpathian Basin, they did not stay there long enough to become true Christians. With Slavs and Avars replacing them, the Christianisation of Central Europe had to start from scratch.

Migrations are an intangible phenomenon in archaeological research. However, relocations of larger groups of people may be of key significance to the development of older communities. The article is an attempt to indicate the elements of material culture that may be related to the relocation of people from various parts of Great Moravia to Bohemia, Poland and perhaps also Rus’. Possible similarities and differences will be indicated between the specific regions, accompanied by considerations of the way in which these migrations could have changed the cultural picture of the area in the 10th century.

Coins are not only a means of payment, but also a means of cultural communication. Both their obverses and reverses contain epigraphic and iconographic elements that together create an image. Among the iconographic elements, there are motifs understood as a repeating decorative element, but also as an expression of a certain type of idea. Archaeological motifs reflect their form of archaeological monuments or their elements, while their subject matter commemorates not only the monument itself, but also various related aspects researched by archaeologists. The aim of the considerations was to examine the numismatic form of commemorating archaeological heritage. The presented prehistoric and early medieval motifs appearing on European coins in the years 1992–2022 were first analyzed in terms of the form of their depiction on coins, then the archaeological themes with which these motifs are connectedwere taken into account, and on this basis axiological considerations were possible, aimed at answering the question – why a given motif was placed on the coin.

Tracing the history of research and bringing closer the opinions of individual researchers shows how the interpretations of these monuments in archaeological literature have changed over the years. The text discusses and characterizes the findings of arrowheads from the territory ruled by the Piast Dynasty together with an attempt to divide them into types according to thetypology of A. F. Medvedev for finds from the territory of ancient Rus. These issues are only an introduction to further research in this field.

This paper examines the custom of burying the dead with buckets in the context of ideological and religious changes in early medieval Poland. The corpus of sources for this study includes around 350 vessels discovered at over 100 cemeteries. Because Christianization of funerary practices was a multifaceted and long-term process, in which the gradual introduction of Christian motifs led to elimination or adaptation of pagan rites, it is difficult to determine whether a particular object deposited in the grave was regarded as purely “Christian” or “pagan”. This problem also relates to buckets. It seems that buckets were placed in graves as part of the so-called cult of the dead, a practice which was expressed through feasts that involved both the living and the dead. Buckets were filled with liquids and food with the intention to facilitate the journey to the Otherworld and to protect the living against the undesired return of the deceased. Burials with buckets, therefore, may have aroused concerns among the clergy and could have been regarded as practices associated with pagan traditions that deviated considerably from Christian norms and newly introduced funerary customs.

The article describes three early medieval vessels found on Ostrów Radzimski (Murowana Goślina municipality, Poznań county, Wielkopolskie voivodeship), including an early medieval vessel which depicts human figures, which is unique in Poland [Kostrzewski 1948]. The artefacts were moulded from pottery clay mixed with sand; then they were wholly thrown on a potter’s wheel. At the bottoms of two pots an identical pottery mark was identified. The pots are of similar size; there are horizontal engraved grooves, which become more frequent towards the top parts of the vessels. The presence of two horizontal, parallel slats, cut diagonally, is a characteristic feature. It imitates the crinkle-cut ornament. On the basis of the observed technical and technological characteristics, as well as the morphological and stylistic characteristics, it can be assumed that the vessels were made by the same potter on the same potter’s wheel [see Kowalczyk 2017c: 166]. The artefacts, despite numerous similarities, slightly differ in terms of their dimensions. This results from the manufacturing technique — moulding, and then throwing on a potter’s wheel. When the rich adornment on the vessels is taken into account, one can see the differences which stem from the potter’s unconventional treatment of the surface of the pottery. When considering the technical and technological characteristics as well as morphological and stylistic characteristics, the described vessels should be dated to the end of the 10th–11th century [see Kostrzewski 1948], maybe the D2 stage according to Wojciech Dzieduszycki [1982: 111], that is, from the 10/11th century till the fi rst half of the 11th century. They were probably used by the inhabitants of the Early Piast castle town on Ostrów Radzimski. The vessels were probably made under the influence of West Pomeranian impacts.

The collection of weights is formally and chronologically diverse. The oldest specimens come from structures dated back to the 4th quarter of the 9th century, the youngest to the 14th century. Metallographic analyses indicate that to produce the scales and weights, alloys of copper, different types of bronze and brass were used. The fact that exchange of goods in Santok took place earlier than in the other regions of Wielkopolska is evidence of close contacts with the then economic Baltic zone.

Chess is a board game, in the Middle Ages referred to as a tabula. During the long way it took since its origin in India in the 6th century until modern times, the subsequent communities left their own, inimitable cultural marks. In India, chess had a deeply mystical nature; Persians used chess to picture the world as a battlefield; Arabs systematised many concepts and took note of the mathematical aspect; Europe made use of chess to define rules that should apply to an ideal society. This shows a perfect understanding of the balance on the chessboard, the mutual dependencies and consistent actions leading to success – both when playing and creating social life. Medieval literature provides an excellent basis for studies of the intertwining cultural trends and describing the reality. In the literature, elements based on playing chess are oftentimes among the postulated modes of education. However, the ideas encountered by the potential users of chess tournaments were best communicated by the figures and the accumulated plethora of notions. An analysis of the changes affecting jackstraws at an early stage of the game’s adaptation in Europe and other territories which took over chess as cultural models, leads to a conclusion that the material from the 11th-12th centuries that comes from Polish collections matches many Latin trends and shows considerable knowledge thereof.

Opis:
A Transylvanian Prince Gyula I made a visit to Constantinople in 953, where he was baptised. The Patriarch of Constantinople ordained a monk Hierotheus the Hungarian as a bishop, who later baptised the family of Gyula. He also initiated the process of christianising his principality. Gyula’s daughter Sarolt married the Hungarian Prince Géza. Sarolt was very vigorous and she had a strong infl uence upon her husband. It was her who convinced Géza to invite Christian missionaries to Hungary in 972. She also established the fi rst Hungarian bishopric in her residence of Veszprém. This bishopric was consecrated to the Archangel Michael, to whom also the church in the residence of her father in Alba Iulia (Gyulafehérvár) was dedicated, later rebuilt and honoured with the title of the episcopal cathedral. Michael was not the only patron saint to protect Veszprém. There was also a rotunda of Saint George, considered a very old one at the time. Sarolt wanted to consecrate some church to Saint Michael in Veszprém, because she used to pray to him in Alba Iulia. That was the reason the bishopric of Veszprém did not accept the older dedication to Saint George. The cult of Saint George was very common in Bavaria during the nineth century, yet we have no evidence of Saint George veneration on the territory of Bavarian border marks – and for the same reason there is no evidence of it among the dedications of Pribina’s and Kocel’s churches in Pannonia. The rotunda in Veszprém was defi nitely not erected in Carolingian times and its dedication was not of Bavarian origin. Therefore, we can assume that is of Great Moravian origin. Another member of the Arpád dynasty was given a name Severin (Hungarian: Szörény) at his baptism in 972, but an old-Hungarian chronicler wrote down his name in the distorted form ‘Zyrind‘. Severin was the Duke of Szomogy, just as his son and successor, i.e., Koppány. Karolda, Sarolt’s older sister is believed to have been his wife. The Hungarian Prince Géza had younger brother Michael. The name Michael, which he took at his baptism in 972, was very popular in Bulgaria already in 866, when Bulgarian Prince Boris took this name at his baptism. If Michael took a Christian name popular in Bulgaria, he could have fulfi lled a wish of his Christian wife of probably Bulgarian origin, further indicated by her sons’ names, i.e., Ladislav and Vazul, which are derivations from the names Vladislav and Vasilij. Michael’s Bulgarian wife, as well as Géza’s Sarolt and Zyrind’s Karold, were Christians from their childhood and they persuaded their pagan husbands to accept Christian baptism. Members of the Arpadian state, who received their baptisms in 972, could be infl uenced by the impact of Great Moravian and Carolingian Christianity, which partially outlasted in the old pre-Hungarian centres, for example in Nitra, Bratislava, Blatnohrad, Veszprém and Pécs.

The article presents the formal diversity of the Early Medieval vessels from Wiślica. The vessels were described by means of proportions of dimensions and stylistic features, treated as nominal variables, which became the basis for statistical analysis (cluster analysis and principal components analysis). The measurement scheme is presented in figure 2. Based on the obtained results, vessels have been divided into 8 types. The first four ones included pots with a S-shaped profile. Other types consist of vessels with one, more visible element, i.e.: there are vessels with a cylindrical neck in type V, vessels with a long, straight neck, with a strongly flaring rim in type VI, vessels with an angular connection between the neck and the body, marked with a fault are included in type VII, and double-conical vessels are in type VIII. What is more, an attempt has also been made to trace the relative chronology of pottery vessel types, based on stratigraphic relations observed at the sites, where they were excavated. In the case of vessels type VI-VIII, it allowed us to determine their most probable period of occurrence. Other vessels belong to long-lasting forms.

Abstract: In the second half of the 20th century during archaeological excavations in the area of the Old Town in Wolin were discovered remains of two features which stood out against the background of wooden structures characteristic of this centre in the early Middle Ages, dated to the second half of the 9th century and the 10th-11th century which were interpreted as pagan temples. As a result of later reinterpretation of sources the hypothesis of functioning in Wolin pagan cult focused around the two temples was negated. According to the author of this text the analysis of available source base does not seem to give rise to such an unequivocal interpretation and rejection of earlier findings.

The article concerns the research of an early medieval fortified settlement in Horbowo-Kolonia, site 10, in the Biała Podlaska district, Lublin voivodeship (AZP 60-88/88-10). The studies were non-invasive and minimally invasive, with the use of geological probing, geophysics and archaeological remote sensing. On their basis, it was established that the fortified settlement in Horbowo is a two- rampart structure with a moat between the ramparts. The main (internal) rampart is made of one row of boxes, with a gate in its eastern part. Apart from the area from the fortified settlement, its immediate vicinity („podgrodzie”) was also examined.

For several decades, the Institute of Archaeology in Prague has used non-destructive geophysical methods to research fortifications. New cooperation between archaeologists and geophysicist as part of a Czech-Polish project resulted in a more systematic and targeted survey of early medieval fortifications. The results of this cooperation were presented at a workshop Use of non-destructive and destructive methods in archaeological research of early medieval hillforts, held in Prague in 2019. The mainpart of this article contains different examples of geophysical prospecting used in connection with archaeological research into the early medieval fortifications in Bohemia. Selected examples illustrate various conditions, combinations and possibilities of application of non-destructive geophysical methods. In several cases, the results of geophysical measurements can also be supplemented by the results of archaeological research or surveys.

Opis:
The author evaluates the available information about the fortifications of the Mikulčice acropolis, the main area of the Early Medieval agglomeration. He gives a new perspective on the structure and dating of the fortification based on analyzing the documentation of all conducted excavations. Great Moravian rampart is composed of a stone face wall, clay-wood core strengthened by grates and a stone substructure ringed by stake palisades, in front of, and in some places partially under, the face wall. The substructure’s role was most likely to bear the face wall’s weight and to strengthen the artificial slope under it against water erosion by the nearby river. The defensive wall was built in a relatively short time as a singular structure, probably in the last third of the 9th century.

In the course of excavations carried out on site 1 in Prusak the remains of an early medieval settlement from the previous phases of early Middle Ages was recorded. These were ground relics of residential features and accompanying traces of utility features in the form of pits, used primarily to store and process food. They created recurring, mutually differing binary systems interpreted as homesteads inhabited by nuclear families. It was assumed that they were created at different times, which was confirmed by the analysis of formal features of ceramic sets. Ceramics collections coming from the above mentioned systems were treated just as monuments obtained from compact sets. Also the production zone was distinguished, consisting of wood-tar pits and accompanying residential buildings. It functioned in the period between leaving the first complex of homesteads and creation of the second. It was preceded with a quite long settlement hiatus, during which trees grew that were used for the production of wood tar.

This article (coupled with a comprehensive catalogue) is a continuation of earlier studies of Roman coins and clasps discovered during surface surveys conducted with metal detectors on the eastern and southern shores of Lednica Lake. As a result of the work carried out in 2018-2022, three new early medieval hoards and several so-called ‘loose coins’ were discovered in the mentioned area. Single finds were uncovered in the southern and eastern parts of the study area, while all the cluster finds (hoards) were discovered in its central part, on the settlements near the Gniezno Bridge abutment. The most numerous of the hoards, with a total weight of 16.93 grams, dated around 1015, consisted of 39 fragmentary or fully preserved coins (Islamic, German Reich, English coin, Polish coin of Bolesław the Brave and coins of undetermined origin) and 2 small fractions of silver scrap (a bar and a tape). Another cluster find was a small hoard of Crusader denarii that were thought to have been minted at Polish mints. It consisted of 6 coins with a total weight of 4.06 g., which were deposited into the ground at the turn of the 11th / 12th century. The third hoard discovered was a collection of Polish coins weighing a total of 2.21 grams, deposited into the ground around 1143. It included a coin of Bolesław III the Wrymouth (1107-1138) and denarii of Władysław the Exile: one with depictions of the prince on the throne and fighting the Lion (dated 1138-1140) and three denarii with images of the prince and the bishop (dated 1141-mid 1143). Three fragments weighing a total of 1.01 grams were included in the collection of so-called loose coins. The first was a small fraction (about 1/6th of the total) of a dirham of Naṣr ibn Aḥmad (301-331 = 914-942/3) of the Sāmānid dynasty, minted at an unspecifi ed mint in 941/2; the second, an extremely valuable find in the form of another fragment of a coin of Bolesław the Brave. The last in the collection of loose coins was a fragment of an unspecifi ed fragmented coin, which can be dated to the late 10th/early 11th century.

In 2017, the excavation of the fortifications in Pasym, Szczytno district, was continued. During this time three trenches were excavated (Figure 2). Trench 1/2017 (measuring 15 x 5 m) was laid out in the western part of the fortification, partly on the edge, partly on the slope descending from the west towards the lake. Trench 2/2017 (measuring 15 x 5 m) was located on the eastern slope of the fortification. Trench 3/2017 (measuring 5 x 5 m) was located in a dip situated to the south-east of the fort. The study encompassed an area of 1.75 acres. During the excavations, unusually interesting remains within the courtyard of the stronghold were discovered. Earlier observations concerning the fortification of the site were also confirmed. The powerful defence system has no analogies in contemporary Prussian territories. Particularly valuable were the layers of accumulated deposits dating from the Early Iron Age and the Early Middle Ages.

The aim of the article is to outline the need to reconceptualized the early medieval burials of “vampires” from Poland. These burials are understood as the remains of the so-called “anti- vampire” practices resulting from the social perception of bad death. These, in turn, are recognized as a socio-religious phenomenon, the assumption of which was to postpone the evil actions of the ‘vampire’ by means of certain measures. Due to doubts about the term “vampire”, concerning both the linguistic sphere and the cultural and historical realities, it is suggested not to use it. The proposed alternative, more precise terms would therefore be the terms “returning dead” or “(un)dead”. Another issue raised is the setting of ‘anti-vampire’ burials in an atypical framework. “Anti-vampirical” burials meet the criteria of atypicality on a macro scale, however, it is possible to consider them typical, assuming that they functioned in the culture of Western Slavs in the early Middle Ages as belonging to a specific social group.

In the oldest stages of the early Middle Ages, the settlements located between the Warta and the Obra were concentrated predominantly in a few areas: between the Warta, the Sama and the Samica Stęszewska, in the vicinity of Pniewy and Lwówek, and to the west of Sieraków. The resulting structure, over time supplemented with settlement clusters in Opalenica Plain, formed the basis for a network of gords established in the 9th and the early 10th centuries. The arrangement of hamlets and gords allowed to reconstruct long-range transport routes connecting these regions with south Wielkopolska, Lusatia as well as the north-western Slavic domains.

This article presents an analysis of two brass lockets, rectangular in shape, discovered in a richly equipped grave no. 62 in an early-medieval grave field in Radom (the 4th quarter of the 11-12th centuries). As a result of the analysis, their cognitive value can be estimated in a comprehensive way against the background of other finds of the type excavated in graves. On the other hand, it has allowed to enrich the knowledge of burying the dead with objects of magical and religious nature. The lockets discovered in Radom were made locally, most probably as imitations of more sophisticated pendants. Most probably, they were used as containers for magical or healing amulets, possibly contact relics (brandeum, eulogiae) or perfumes. They were probably buried after mid-11th century, during the religious transformation taking place in the early Piast state, bearing material testimony to the intertwining pagan rites and the ceremonies of the new faith.

On several occasions during the 20th c. archaeological finds were brought to light at Gaarz. A great part of the finds from this site in Ostholstein (Germany) hints at a Slavic settlement there. During surveys with the metal detector from the year 2012 onwards, a steadily growing mass of metal finds was uncovered. Some of these are of high quality and attest to wealth which exceeds the scope of merely rural settlements. In this paper some of the archaeological material is presented and the function of this “new” site in the vicinity of the central place of Starigard/Oldenburg is discussed.

Sama technika wykonania tych zdobień, wskutek złego stanu jej zachowania, pozostaje trudna do rozpoznania.
The subject of specialist laboratory examinations was a helmet discovered in the vicinity of a burial ground in Silniczka near Radomsko. The re-conservation of the artefact performed in the Laboratory of Metal Monuments Conservation at the University of Łódź revealed that its skull was made of two triangular pieces of iron sheet. It was very interesting to discover the remains of ornamentation of non-ferrous metal at the top of the skull, which was in different shades of gold. The ornamentation covers the area around the opening for a tube and the rivets joining the pieces of metal sheet together. The clearly visible ornamentation made it possible to collect samples for tests and to perform chemical analysis. Traces of copper, brass and gold were found. It is difficult to determine the technique adopted to create the ornamentation on account of its poor condition. The structure and ornamentation of the helmet from Silniczka are closest to the so-called Great Poland helmets. The pieces of metal sheet forming the skull were riveted, and in some points they were flattened with overlap. The helmet skull is conical. At its top, there is an opening where a conical tube used to be attached. A considerable series of similar helmets was found in the territory of early medieval Ruthania and the area inhabited by Baltic tribes. The artefact from Silniczka is not a typical representative of head protection of this type, however, it can be classified as one thanks to its multi-element construction, presence of a tube, and ornaments of non-ferrous metals.

Pilgriming is generally understood as a kind of motivational, religious mowing to “saint places” revived by the atonement intention (to rarely thankful) for God given goodness, which is subjectively believed to be meaningful. In thereby interpretation, only visible aspect comes to the foreground, without getting into its theological proof. In hereby elaboration, however, the topic of theological issue is touched upon, not in a sense of a detailed meaning of the notion, but by showing the historical determinations conditioning the way of understanding the notion. In Christian bastion of the discussed phenomenon is the Middle East, from where the solutions have been transferred to the West, in somewhat different categories. The transfer, both in theory and in practice, could be possible only due to people’s engagement, who were fascinated with the eastern spirituality. Some of the famous names, who could be distinguished are Jerome, John Cassian or Melania the Elder, the most active figures. The idea of pilgrimage transferred to the west, hasn’t been, clearly, intact in its form, but exposed to, based on different local accents, evolutionary changes. It is shown in interpretation changes applied, in reference to the notion of peregrinatio, inland and in the British Isles.

Opis:
Archaeological explorations carried out between Tartaczna and Panieńska streets in Gdańsk has provided a wealth of movable historical artefacts. One of them is a quiver/bowcase loop made of antler. The article discusses typological classification, comparative analysis, dating and ethnocultural characteristics of the artefact. Antler and iron elements of quivers and bowcases are very rare in Poland and all of them are considered to be elements of foreign culture: Rus’ or Hungarian.

The aim of the paper is to present the results of a typological and chronological analysis of movable finds obtained during excavations at site no. 20 in Przemyśl in the years 2005–2007. The site covers the area located directly on the west side of the cathedral church, around the building of the former Cathedral School at the Cathedral Square. Due to the location of the site on the eastern side of the castle hill in the vicinity of the Romanesque rotunda of St. nicholas, this site is an important research point with reference to Przemyśl. The remains of intensive open settlement were exposed at this site in the form of residential and utility features in two phases: 1. Roman influence (phase B2–C2) and 2. early Middle Ages (between the second half of the 10th or the beginning of the 11th and the end of the 12th century). The immovable features together with the initial report were published after the completion of the research in 2006 and 2007. It was noted that after using the open settlement, an earth rampart was built here, in which six subsequent phases were distinguished. The early Middle Ages ceramic material was the only type of artefacts that were discovered in the subsequent six phases of the earth rampart. On the basis of some characteristics – technology, ornamentation or rim shapes, an attempt was made to determine the chronology of piling up successive layers of the rampart. The material in all layers is similar and it can be dated to the 11th–13th century. Therefore, the rampart was probably created from the end of the 12th or 13th century. A large collection of Modern period pottery sherds was obtained from the mound of the youngest 6th phase of the rampart, which was established as the period from the end of the 16th to the 1st half of the 17th century.

The settlement complex at Czermno (south-eastern Poland) (Fig. 1) is identified with Cherven, the main town of so-called Cherven Towns. On the basis of “The Primary Chronicle” and the results of previous archaeological research, it can be estimated that this site was functioning approximately from the middle of the 10th to the middle of the 13th century. The archaeological site consists of a stronghold, boroughs and cemeteries, located directly near the riverbank of the Huczwa River, on both banks. Some parts of this settlement complex are linked together with wooden bridges, whose relics are visible on the ground level of today’s meadows (Fig. 2, 3). The article presents the results of archaeological prospection of one such construction, located almost directly in front of the gate of the stronghold. During this project, a total of 68 piles were documented (Fig. 4, 5). The Digital Elevation Model allows us to estimate that the bridge was approximately 275 m long and 3 m wide. Radiocarbon analyses of four wood samples from the bridge have shown that the construction was probably built in the 2nd half of the 10th century and likely functioned uninterruptedly until the middle of the 13th century. Therefore, it would be one of the oldest constructions within the discussed archaeological site.

This thesis is an anthropological analysis of an early-medieval population, inhabiting the area of Stręgoborzyce village, Igołomia-Wawrzeńczye commune, Małopolska province. The subjects of research were skeletons of 67 individuals, which were dug during archaeological excavations on site number 38 in Stręgoborzyce, in years 2010 and 2011. Among the 67 skeletons of different state of preservation there were isolated 22 females, 17 males, 4 children and 24 individuals of unknown sex. Basic research included determining the age and sex of the individuals and the state of preservation of skeletal remains. Author did some cranial and postextracranial skeleton measurements, which allowed doing an anthropological characterization of the population and estimating a hypothetical intravital body length of each individual. The evaluation of health conditions was taken on the basis of pathological changes in bone material, which are an expression of previous diseases and degenerative processes. The thesis also focused on the examination of the presence of non-metric characteristics of the human skeleton. At the end author tried to do a comparison analysis of the population to other groups, similar in time and geography.

Abstract: The article is a polemical response to Błażej Stanisławski’s (2011) comments on early medieval construction in Wolin published in Volume VI/VII of ‘Materiały Zachodniopomorskie’. I do not agree with the dating of the oldest log construction and wattle-and-daub construction buildings. I also question the terminology used by this researcher, Furthermore, I believe there is some exaggerated interpretation of finds, unreliable reconstructions of post-and-beam buildings, erroneous selection of illustrations for the presented issues and a lack of examples as well as references supporting the theory of Frisian analogies of the post-and-beam construction. In the section on palisade construction structures I polemicize B. Stanisławski on Wolin long houses, we agree that the presence of the palisade construction buildings in Wolin is not synonymous with the presence of Scandinavian settlers. The vertical-post log construction was, in my opinion, presented too briefly based on only one building from trench 6 in Wolin’s Old Town. In summary, I conclude that the work by B. Stanisławski has many shortcomings, the reinterpretations of discoveries of older researchers are unconvincing and the presented documentation is inaccurate.

According to the finds, Polish and Western European coins reached western Ukraine in two stages: in the 10th /11th century and in the first half of the 12th century. Some of these coins (but usually without Polish ones) were transported further east, to the vicinity of Kiev. On the other hand, Western European coins flowed into the territories of Northern Rus’ from the north. This text is based on data contained both in the literature (including recent one) and information not yet published, kindly provided by researchers from Ukraine (A. Opis:
By the end of the 10th century, the area of Opatów and Sandomierz was probably inhabited by a small tribe whose name has not been recorded in written sources. The establishment of a gord in Zawichost Podgórze before the end of the 9th century coupled with the emergence of a local cluster of pyre kurgan grave fields may be evidence of the arrival of new settlers from an area east of the Vistula. Inclusion of the Sandomierz area into the domain of the Wielkopolska Polans in the late 10th century resulted in disappearance of the existing tribal settlement structures which were replaced by new ones. This was related to the arrival to this area of individuals and groups representing the new Piast dynasty rule who came from other parts of the country or even from abroad. They included warriors from the ducal team, craftsmen, merchants as well as settlers relocated voluntarily or by force, possibly captives. As they represented different cultural traditions, their appearance has been well documented in archaeological sources. It also seems to be confirmed in toponymy. On top of the biggest number of Wielkopolska newcomers from the heart of the Piast dynasty domain, in the vicinity of Sandomierz and Opatów there could have also operated merchants related to the broadly defined Scandinavian and Russian culture as well as nomadic tribes, most probably Hungarians. The latter could have arrived as warriors, members of the ducal team, merchants or captives.

People devote almost all their life to ensure themselves and their family a proper standard of living. Their activities focus on acquiring food, organizing a safe living space and ensuring safety. However, if our activity was restricted only to the vital needs formulated in this way, it would not only be a far-reaching simplification but most of all a rejection of the greatest characteristics of a human being — their free will and their mind. These allow one to move to the spiritual realm, and search for social bonds without restricting oneself only to living functions. People need community integration not only through work, but also through entertainment, sensations and experiences, which result from various experiences in life from the moment of birth till death. In the 2nd half of the 10th century the land under the Piast reign was entering the Latin civilization circle. Western cultural trends started to permeate the local traditions. New settlements and cultural centres were developing and the existing ones were being remodeled. The residences of secular and church authorities came to be an indispensable and representative facility in new central places. One of the most important gord centres located in the centre of the Piast rulership is the area of Lednica lake. On the biggest island of the lake — Ostrów Lednicki — in the 1st half of 10th century a gord was established, around which a local settlement centred for several centuries. Just on Lednica gord a complex of residential-sacral buildings was created. For over 150 years research has been conducted on the island — both archaeological and the broadly understood interdisciplinary research connected with it. A gord, an open settlement on the island, settlements and burial grounds on the shores of the lake, as well as the waters of the lake were included in the study. One of the research places included the eastern shore of Lednica island, where at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s constructions and layerings connected with the abutment of the east bridge were uncovered (fi g. 1). This research, carried out by Mateusz Łastowiecki in excavation I/87, brought valuable information concerning the construction of the bridge, a point of contact between the bridge and the island, the character of the layerings, and a significant number of monuments, among which the objects made of organic raw material constituted a significant part. A tiny wooden object was one of them (inv. no. 103/91 – MPP/A/158). Unfortunately it was preserved fragmentarily (fi g. 2). It was made of foliaceous wood — beech (European beech Fagus sylvatica L) — and it has a clearly legible and neat form. It resembles a heart in shape (preserved roughly in half) with three holes — two wholly retained and one partially (fi g. 3). A straight broken back-end goes from the wider part of the “heart”. If we look at the object along its longer axis, it can be noticed that the holes do not align — vertically they mark three separate lines. The total length of the preserved piece is 11.6 cm, while the width in the widest place is 3.9 cm. The diameter of the holes, which were drilled slightly aslope with respect to the flat surface of an object, is around 0.6 cm. The “subcordate” part is 8.2 cm long and 0.8 cm thick. In the side plane of the object the “subcordate” part moves at a slight angle to the longitudinal one. There is a slight perpendicular protrusion, a convex — a kind of a threshold — at the point of contact of the two parts. Two transversal cuts around 0.8 cm away from one another are visible at this threshold. At the bottom ultimate longitudinal part, a clear perpendicular cut which creates a shallow (2 millimeter) step which goes to the edge of the fracture is visible (fi g. 5). At the upper part of the described piece, two small symmetrically placed indentations are distinguishable. The object was found in the excavation marked I/87, in quarter B, in the layer IIIa3. On the basis of the cultural material which appeared in the exposed layers and taking into consideration the dates of dendrochronological analysis, the chronology of the IIIa–d layers (in which the described object was found) can be dated to the 2nd–3rd quarter of the 11th century. The described piece of a distinctively formed object certainly comes from the damaged musical instrument. The broken piece is a peghead plate with a short neck. As already mentioned, it can come from a rebec — a stringed musical instrument. The origins of the rebec can be ambiguous. It is rooted in the Middle East, and it reached Europe through the Arabs. The name of the instrument derives from Arabic, in which it is known as rababu. It appears in a similar form from at least the 10th century, and the period between the 10th and 14th centuries is the time of its greatest splendour. Bowed string instruments — rebecs and vielles — were depicted in medieval iconography. On the basis of these sources, a classification of the instrument is possible. It shows that several kinds of these instruments were built in the Middle Ages (fi g. 6, 7). Pieces of diverse objects which are found during archaeological excavations, very often create a lot of problems during the identification of their original appearance and the reconstruction of the intended use of a particular piece. The above-mentioned team made an attempt to identify a piece of the find from Lednica. The initial examination, discussion over the details of the construction and the foregoing experience directed our search towards musical instruments — chordophones — i.e. wooden stringed instruments. The medieval iconography does not facilitate the identification. Information about the use of chordophones by the Slavs already comes from the end of the 6th century. According to the message of the Byzantine writer Theophylact Simocatta, in 591 soldiers from a personal unit of the emperor Maurice (Maurikios) captured three unarmed Slavs, who had come from the Baltic Sea (Sclaveni from the West Ocean). At the moment of their capture they were unarmed, but they were carrying musical instruments — kitharas. It is believed that this is the oldest written source which confirms that Slavs were familiar with musical practices, and the instruments described in it were κιθάραι (kitharas) and λύραι (lyres). It is thought that these names can refer to the plucked string instruments with a corpus-soundbox, to which the Proto-Slavic name gusles can refer. The oldest Cyril-Methodius’ Bible translation speaks in favour of equating the name κιθάραι with Slavic gusles. Interestingly, we can read twice about stringed instruments in Gallus Anonymus, who describes the reign of the first Piast rulers. So far, less than ten wooden chordophones from archaeological research in the area of the Piast reign, from the 10th–15thc., have been known. Lyres, vielles, a nyckelharpa and a gittern have been identified among those. Two wooden lyres come from the 10th–11th century cultural layerings of a gord in Opole. Another lyre, which comes from the 2nd half of the 13th century, was found during archaeological research in a fishing village in Gdańsk. A piece of a wooden outer board of an instrument — probably of a nyckelharpa — from Wolin, can be dated to the 3rd quarter of the 13th century. A gittern of a small size comes from the layerings of the 15th century Elbląg, whereas two other instruments classified as vielles were obtained in the course of archaeological research. One of them comes from 14th century Elbląg, the other one, dated to the 16th century, was found during excavation works in Płock. The greatest number of wooden instruments — from the areas which were in the closest vicinity to the Piast reign — was found on the territory of Ruthenia, especially in Veliky Novgorod. The shape of an object found at Ostrów Lednicki and its detailed examination supported by the material from excavation works permitted the suggestion that this is a part of a wooden stringed instrument. It could probably be a peghead headstock of a rebec’s neck, an instrument where the strings were rubbed with the bow. The reconstructed instrument from Lednica was built from two pieces of wood. The headstock plate, the neck and the corpus were made from one piece, and the soundbox, which was cut into the corpus, was covered with an outer board. During the reconstruction of the complete, probable original look of the instrument, several small but legible signals, visible on the described piece, were taken into consideration. The state of preservation fostered the moderately correct reconstruction of the upper part of the instrument. The fracture of the neck appeared just at the horizontal axis of an object, while the partially preserved upper part of a headstock allowed one to line out a line which gave it a full shape. A very small part of a neck survived, but it was long enough to adjust the proportions. Fortunately, the presence of a small transverse cut suggested the point of the fixing and glueing of the outer board. At the point of transition from a headstock into the neck there are traces which allow one to conclude where a fixing for hanging (?) an instrument was placed. Two holes and a fragment of a third one preserved in the subcordate part formed a basis for drawing conclusions about the number of strings and the arrangement of the string pegs. The traces of the cuts on a small transverse bump-fret (a nut) constituted a clue concerning the number of strings and their distance over the neck. The angle created by the headstock and the preserved piece of the neck, as well as the location of a fret, allowed one to roughly work the further part of an instrument out. A subtle but legible indentation at the neck, marked the fixing point of the outer board of a corpus. The reconstructed instrument was equipped with a flat bridge, and strings from sheep intestines were prepared. The rebec reached 46 cm in length, and at the widest point it was 10 cm wide. A bow (length of 67 cm) was made from willow switch, whereas the string from horsehair. What is the significance of the small piece of a wooden object — found during research at the Lednica bridge abutment — for the inhabitants of Lednica? Who was it for and what was its role? We will probably never find this out. However, as a result of the research and discussions we can state that this is a piece of a peghead of a wooden stringed instrument. It could be a part of a gusle (as generally understood, stringed instruments), maybe of a rebec, possibly of a gudok. The name of the find is certainly significant for musicologists, historians who focus on musical instruments, or music theorists; however, for those who conduct research at Ostrów Lednicki and study the gord which was established there, the identification of an instrument itself is the most relevant. It is important that we can say that at the time when the gord with sacred places was functioning at Ostrów Lednicki, there were musicians who were playing not only liturgical music but certainly secular music too.

Natomiast analiza szczątków kostnych znalezionych podczas badań lądowych dała możliwość rekonstrukcji składu gatunkowego ryb i preferencji kulinarnych mieszkańców Ostrowa Lednickiego we wczesnym średniowieczu. Pozwala to, w oparciu o dane z obydwu obszarów badań, rekonstruować ów ważny fragment życia wczesnośredniowiecznych mieszkańców okolic jeziora Lednica, jakim było rybołówstwo.
Fishery was one of the common ways of obtaining food in the early Middle Ages. The importance of this element grew along with the spread of Christianity and the requirement to observe fasts. This way of obtaining food must have been common for the inhabitants of Ostrów Lednicki as well. A collection of more than 30 objects identified as fishing equipment was obtained through years of underwater archaeological research. The analysis of skeletal remains found during land surveys has provided an opportunity to reconstruct the composition of fish species and culinary preferences of the inhabitants of Ostrów Lednicki in the early Middle Ages. By combining these two types of sources, it is possible to reconstruct that part of the life of early medieval people which was made up of fishery.

Opis:
During excavations conducted by Witold Hensel and Jan Żak in 1951 in the capitular garden on Ostrów Tumski in Poznań the researchers discovered a small (8,1 cm long) axehead (ryc. 1), whose surface bore a set of cuts forming an „inscription”. This discovery was named as an archaeological sensation. Despite the fact that it was found in a layer dated to the modern period, it was identified, based on some analogies, as belonging to the 10th–11th c. A group of palaeographers was asked to partake in the studies of the artifact to help reveal the mystery behind this „caption”. Even though their opinions varied, it was generaly accepted that – most probably – these marks were latin STLA letters, interpreted as an abbreviation of the word stella („arrow”). Based on all these findings an entire pyramid of further ideas concerning the artefact’s function and symbolic connotations was built. It was emphasized that this is one of the oldest examples of native epigraphy, that it proved the local population to be able to write (and read) as early as in the 11th c. Additionaly, the axe was expected to hold an unspecified role assiociated with magical rites, etc. Nowadays, owing to a much more extensive knowledge on artefacts of this type, a critical typological-chronological analysis of the given specimen leads to quite different conclusions. Analogies invoked by J. Żak (1956) either bear serious disparities in details or are much younger than he suggested. The described axehead is a typical representative of M. Głosek’s (1996) late medieval/modern type IX. This identification is further reinforced by the chronology of this find’s context – the layer in which it was found was dated to the years 1500–1700 based on a large quantity of modern (glazed) pottery, fragments of stove tiles, roof tiles, bricks and iron objects. The small size of Poznań’s axehead is also not suprising. Beside the massive specimens of late medieval and modern axes, miniature forms are known as well (ryc. 2). Their function is not clearly specified in the literature, although they are usually identified as carpentry and fine woodworking tools or children’s toys. To sum up the elaboration so far, it is clear that the artefact from Ostrów Tumski in Poznań represents a typical late medieval, or – taken the chronology of the find’s context – modern form. Both the shape and dimensions are typical for many axeheads from Central Europe at that time. There is no reason whatsoever to continue to claim that this specimen is of early medieval dating and that it bore some special symbolic meaning. The revaluation of its dating allows a different approach to the set of marks, „inscription” if someone wills, found on the blade’s surface. If this set of cuts indeed forms a caption, in the context of widespread practice of labeling such items by their manufacturers and knowing a great handful of heavily ornamented axeheads from the time, the presence of these „letters” is not especially striking. Another thing is whether the newly outlined chronological context allows their proper interpretation, if any. This problem, however, should be left for specialists in the field of palaeography.

This article describes issues related to the early medieval rituals. The author focuses on discussing untypical early medieval burials located in Poland. These burials often appear in literature under the name of „anti vampiric burials". I will analyze both the practices for the grave pit and directly to the body of the deceased. Finally, I will try to explain why some of the burials discovered in the graveyards of the tenth to the thirteenth century are different from the generally accepted norm. and whether they are indeed the burial place of beings that folk tradition called vampires.

This paper presents the results of an expert study of several glass vessels from an early medieval castle at Ostrów Lednicki. They come from the so-called second church, a single-nave small building erected in the 1060s and destroyed in 1038 or 1039. In its ruins, a collection of high-grade artefacts was discovered, furnishings of the same temple, as well as fragments of glass and fragmentary preserved glass vessels. The three specimens, examined in the laboratory, were made of potassium glass, of the calcium-potassium variety, of the CaO-K2O-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 type. Interpretation of the analytical results has led to a conclusion that all the vessels could come from a single workshop, attributed to Carolingian and Ottonian workshops in Imperial Germany. Another vessel, discovered in the eastern part of the stronghold and not associated with any of the sacred buildings, has an early date (6th to 9th century). It is believed to be a conical goblet of the Kempston type, made of sodium glass, of the mineral variety, of the Na2O-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 type, from one of the many Western European workshops.

Opis:
Owing to dendrochronological data and archaeological finds, more than 150 strongholds from the southern coastal area of the Baltic Sea between the Lower Elbe and the Lower Vistula, can be identified as the oldest large-scale “fortification horizon” in the North-Western Slavic territories. They developed as early as in the 8th and 9th centuries. Generally, the strongholds are regarded seats of tribal elites. Owing to the rapid development of the local economy and contacts with the neighbouring cultural zones, particularly the Frankish Empire and Scandinavia (ports of trade), the strongholds evolved relatively early in the North-Western Slavic territories. This article focuses on the different aspects of the strongholds’ operations: spreading, location, layout, size, construction types, and building structures, in order to present in detail the architectural specifics of the imposing, strongly fortified ramparts. On the basis of archaeological research, the author highlights the erection of the sector fortifications and the joiningpalisade-like constructions, along with a variety of construction types and materials used. The regional differences in size and the historical-cultural background of these strongholds are also discussed.

The results of archaeological research, enriched by studies performed by historians, show that the processes of forming the Piast state took a relatively short time and it did not entail a period of competition between local tribal leaders. Its character was revolutionary, which determines the uniqueness of the processes occurring in the Polish lands over a thousand years ago.

During dredging of the Dziwna Strait to the north-east of the centre of Wolin near Srebrne Wzgórze (Silver Hill) in 1990, the remains of an early medieval plank boat (wreck VI) and a few fragments of dugout canoes were discovered. A sample taken from the plating produced one dendrochronological date – 964+X-7. Most likely, the boat was built in the early 11th century. Based on the preserved remains, knowing the number of frames, the shape of stems, the width and the number of planks, the rail, and the length of the keel, the boat’s shape was recreated with the help of data obtained from other early medieval wrecks found in Wolin. The boat recreated based on wreck VI is 10.70 m long, 2.60 m wide and 1.05 m high. It has 9 frames consisting of 7 rowing benches attached to the upper parts of hull using vertical beam knee hat strengthen the construction of the boat, and some of them form rowing benches at the stern and the bow sections. In place of the outer rail on the boat’s side, four pairs of oarlocks for eight rowers were located. The clinker built hull side is made of nine planks connected longitudinally by inclined notches to the stems, fastened with iron nails. At the central frame, the mast socket is attached to the bottomstiffener. On the right side (starboard) from the stern of the boat, on the fifth plank from the keel, there is a part of the rudder mounting to the side of the boat. The mast’s standing rigging stay, backstay, running backstay and shrouds were attached to the hull by ropes. Based on wreck No. VI a replica of the boat, named ŚWIATOWIT was built in 2004. The boat was launched during the Slavs and Vikings Festival in Wolin in 2004.

Opis:
Advanced noninvasive research carried out in “The cradle of the Piasts: archaeological underwater prospections in the area of Lednickie Lake” (“Kolebka Piastów archeologiczne prospekcje podwodne w rejonie Jeziora Lednickiego”) project, provided a new collection of artefacts and archaeological sites. In the first stage of the project an archive research was carried out and it showed that there are 61 archaeological sites of different character and chronology in the close proximity to the lake. In the further part of the project, non-invasive research with the use of a magnetometer, a multibeam sonar and a subbottom profiler were conducted. This stage of the project was possible due to cooperation between the team from the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk, which was conducting hydroacoustic research, and underwater archaeologists. In the course of the survey of bathymetric anomalies between Ledniczka island and the west coast of the lake, construction elements were identified. Therefore, the terrain between an island and the mainland was thoroughly searched in order to verify the object which was found. During the search of the bottom by the divers in the designated place, more horizontal structural elements were identified. Localizing vertically impaled wooden constructions identified as piles, was the key point. These elements confirm that in the described place, there was a third bridge on Lake Lednica. Samples for dendrochronological and radiocarbon dating were collected from the P1, P4, P5 piles and V object. Only the sample from object V was suitable for dendrochronological dating, as it did not contain a sapwood layer. As a result it was possible to determine the date when the tree was cut, i.e. after 1293, hence most probably at the turn of 13/14th centuries [Ważny 2017]. Sample wood from pile 1 was subject to radiocarbon dating and the 1085±30 BP date was obtained. After calibration it can be said that it is 68.2% probable that the analyzed material comes from 900–993 (900–922: 22.3%; 948–993: 45.9%). Whereas it is 95.4% probable that it comes from 894–1016 (894–932: 30.5%; 937–1016: 64.9%) [Goslar 2017]. In conclusion, it can be said that during the research, the relics of the bridge leading from the mainland to Ledniczka island located on the W–E axis were localized. The crossing is located at the narrowest place between an island and the mainland. This is around 100 meters and this is the probable length of the bridge. On the basis of the variety in the degree of wood conservation, as well as diverse shapes of the construction elements, and especially the obtained dates from the radiocarbon and dendrochronological datings, it can be assumed that there are two bridge crossings which date to the 10th century and the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. During the 2017 research season an interesting discovery was made. After several seasons of underwater works, a new object was localized and identified as bridge relics. It shows the great archaeological potential of Lednica Lake and how the use of new noninvasive methods can lead to spectacular discoveries. The bridge relics were only identified on the surface level, therefore it is difficult to draw far-reaching conclusions. However, dendrochronological dating makes it possible to determine the origins of the bridge to the 13th/14th century. Militaria found near the bridge are also from this period. The C14 date, which estimates the age of one of the piles for the 2nd half of the 10th century, is very interesting. It can indicate that there were two bridges with different chronology. However, in order to confirm this, further excavation works must be conducted.

Opis:
1Since the dawn of history humans have been interested in using stones for a variety of purposes. The use of rocks and stones as shelters, building material or resource for the production of tools or weapons is a cultural phenomenon. One of the categories of stone objects recorded in graves at early medieval cemeteries includes whetstones. The present study is devoted to whetstones registered in graves at the cemetery at Dziekanowice, site 22 (gmina Łubowo, województwo wielkopolskie). This early medieval necropolis is located on the east shore of Lake Lednica in the direct vicinity of one of the major stronghold centres of the Piast dynasty. The stronghold itself is situated on Ostrów – an island on Lake Lednica. Out of 1585 skeletal graves recorded in situ at the studied cemetery, 847 (53.4%) burials contained altogether 1868 objects considered as grave deposits. In the group of those artifacts were 28 whetstones found in 27 graves (one grave contained 2 whetstones), which account for 3.2 percent of the total number of burials with equipment. In addition, 7 whetstones were recorded loosely at the border between layer I and II (they were damaged by ploughing), and in settlement features; however, these objects are not included in the study. The majority of graves with whetstones unearthed at the cemetery at Dziekanowice were male burials. As many as 21 graves belonged to men, 5 to women and only one to a child. Previous research and publications on cemeteries do not facilitate an ambiguous interpretation of the function of whetstones recorded in graves, although utilitarian character of these objects is unquestionable. It can also be asserted that whetstones were buried more often in male graves, and most often in adult graves. They occurred both in “richer” burials and in those characterized by modest equipment. The new light on the function of some whetstones has been shed by the results of analyses carried out by Martin Ježek from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. His recent spectral analysis of whetstone surfaces has allowed the hypothesis that whetstones (particularly phyllite ones) may have been used as touchstones. The analysis based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS method) revealed residues of metals on the surface of the examined objects. The microanalysis has proven the existence of micro-traces of metals such as gold, silver, tin and copper. In sum, the hypothesis about a special function of the whetstones cannot be excluded. This may apply particularly to the objects with scant traces of polishing, in contrast to whetstones with strongly polished and characteristic concave surfaces resulting from frequent sharpening. The whetstones with scant traces of polishing may have been used not only as sharpening tools, but also (and maybe primarily) as items against which a precious metal was rubbed in order to check its value and the quality of alloy. Identifying the function of whetstones as touchstones creates new possibilities for discussing the problems associated with social stratification and with distinguishing between “richer” and “poorer” graves. A whetstone-touchstone found in a grave gives its owner a different rank in the society than we previously assumed interpreting the object only as a sharpening tool. Undoubtedly, the analysis of social stratification should involve by far more elements than is widely regarded as vital. In addition, whetstones-touchstones may also become important objects for the analysis of trading places and exchange in the Early Middle Ages.

Abstract: The article concerns a boat burial containing the skeleton of a man and furnished with an iron axe head and three bone skates, discovered in 1889 in Szczecin and then completely forgotten. Based on the analysis of the archives and the examination of the axe head, the authors date the find to the 11th century and consider it a burial of a representative of an elite originating from Pomerania or the Baltic Slavic area.

The study presents 175 artefacts from the settlement center in Gniezno – beads and rings. The materials come from settlement levels from around the mid-10th to the 13th centuries. The latest chronological findings based on 14C dating have made it possible to refine the dating, especially of the early settlement levels of the stronghold, where the vast majority of glass artefacts come from. Threeba sic groups of beads have been distinguished based on the technique of their production – beads made of a drawing a tube, the technique of winding a glass strip, as well as casting and sintering. The results of 7 physico-chemical analyzes of the glass composition (performed with the X-Ray Fluorescence, XRF method) are presented. Physicochemical analyzes of the chemical composition of the tested beads made it possible to determine the technological group and the type of glass. An attempt was made to explain the origin of the starting material (glass) for jewelery. A comparative analysis made it possible to indicate in a general manner possible manufacturers and to outline the likely directions of the influx of these glass ornaments to Gniezno.

Two early medieval weapons discovered within the relics of the Ledniczka bridge on Lake Lednica were subjected to non-invasive archaeometallurgical investigations. The conducted analyses allowed to determine the methods of their manufacture, as well as the characteristics of materials that were used in their making. Each specimen was a composite product forged from iron alloys of varying properties. Both the sword and the hammer axe were richly decorated with ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The research allowed in most parts to recreate the original appearance of these ornaments.

In 2017 excavations were started on the fortification in Porębek, Kętrzyn district, site 3. Two excavations were performed during the work along the NE-SW axis (Figure 3). Trench 1/2017 (measuring 10 x 5 m) was opened within the “upper castle” – it included the area from the top of the rampart located on the NW side of this area and part of the courtyard. Trench 2/2017 (measuring 10 x 3 m) was delineated within the “lower castle” – it encompassed the courtyard from its SE edge and was perpendicular to the ditch. A total area of 80 square meters was uncovered. The interesting remains of a 13th-century building of the two-part stronghold were discovered. The source materials suggest that this place was inhabited earlier – in the Early Iron Age and in the Early Middle Ages. The stratigraphy seems to indicate large scale construction work, during which time the terrain was completely transformed. The discovery at the foot of the upper castle, in the Guber river valley, was extremely valuable.

Opis:
This study is devoted to four early medieval swords stored in the National Museum in Szczecin. The paper is a continuation of the weapon collection from the Szczecin Museum presentation, with first part published recently (Klimek, Kucypera, Kurasiński, Pudło 2011). All swords presented here were posted before, but, thus far, bereft of detailed formal, chronological and technological analyzes. The oldest presented specimen was found in Smołdzino, Słupsk District. No detailed location of the find is known, apart from the fact that it was uncovered by sand from a dune. It is preserved as a few pieces coming from a broken blade. Another two swords were also preserved partially, both with almost completely missing blades. They are most probably stray finds from the River Oder near Szczecin. The last, youngest specimen, is a loose find from Złocieniec, Drawsko District. The Smołdzino sword has been dated to the 2nd half of the 8th–half of the 10th centuries, however, it has to be noted that the technique in which its blade was forged (piled/sandwitched) does not allow to completely rule out the possibility of the sword’s earlier (La Tène period) metric. First of the Oder (Szczecin) swords has been classified as the younger type X by Petersen and dated to the 10th–half of the 11th centuries. The second specimen has been identified as Oakeshott’s type ?,B,3 and Geibig’s Kombinationstyp 15-III. It has been linked with the period of the 10th–beginning of the 12th centuries. Both specimens picked from the Oder River had blades forged by welding cutting-edge rods into central core pieces. Their lower guards and pommels (with, possibly, one exception) were formed from single homogeneous billets of iron. By far, the best preserved sword was the one from Złocieniec, classified here as type XI,E,1 by Oakeshott and Kombinationstyp 19 (hilt) and 10 (blade) by Geibig. In view of the presented analogies, it has been fixed to the chronological frame of the 12th–beginning of the 13th century. Unfortunately, due to external factors, no materials examination has been carried out on this weapon.

Opis:
Construction works related to the implementation of the project of the modernisation and extension of archaeological reserves under the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica were conducted at Ostrów Lednicki in 2010. They produced a small bronze item – a fragment of a triangular-shaped horse bit cheekpiece. Its two long edges (lower and upper) are gently arched upwards, and the shorter one was broken off. The lower edge is roller-shaped and oval in cross section. The preserved end at the contact point of the upper and lower edges is thickened, bilaterally, laterally, and diagonally bevelled (resembling a stylised snakehead). The other one, a broken off end of the lower edge, is slightly bent upwards on the inside. Thisis probably the forepart of the second part, a mirror ‘reflection’ of the preserved plate, with relief. Visible on one of its surfaces is a fragment of the relief: part of the body, a wing, tail and paw of a sitting dragon or basilisk. It has a curled wing adhering to the side and a long snakelike tail with a three-part end. One of them is spirally rolled up under the back of the torso. The dimensions of the fragmentally preserved object are as follows: length 5.31 cm, width 2.47 cm, thickness 0.35 cm, thickness with relief 0.55 cm. The bits discovered at Ostrów Lednicki and in the waters of Lake Lednica (along the bridges and in their vicinity) belong mostly to the two-part type I forms according to A. Nadolski. The find from the suburbium is a fragment of the type II bit according to A. Nadolski. They are believed to date from the tenth to thirteenth centuries, but in most cases they are considered to date back to the eleventh-twelfth centuries. The specimen from Ostrów Lednicki has a plate, cast along with an extended straight side, with a relief showing the dragon or basilisk. The item provides no clue as to when exactly and how it was brought to Ostrów Lednicki. However, this is another, after the ending of a whip handle, high-class horse tack-related object of eastern origin discovered at the site.

Among many items which were found in early medieval chamber graves in Eastern-Central Europe are pieces of wax and candles (fig. 1). These artifacts were discovered in seven graves at four cemeteries in Gnezdovo (graves C-198, C-301 and C-306) (fig. 2-4; 7; 8.1-8), Pskov (graves 3 and 6) (fig. 5), Shestovitsa (mound 42) and Timerevo (mound 100) (fig. 6; 8.9). All of these graves were covered with mounds and contained inhumations with very rich grave-goods. The dead were buried with their heads to the west. Candles were found predominantly in female graves (Gnezdovo graves C-198, C-301 and C-306; Pskov grave 3) or in chamber graves containing two individuals (male and female) in association with the females (Timerevo grave 100). The chronology of the graves is very similar – all are dated to the second half of the 10th century. Candles were placed on the periphery in eastern (Gnezdovo graves C-301 and C-306, Pskov grave 6) or southern (Pskov grave 3, Shestovitsa mound 42) part of the chamber. The number of candles in particular graves ranged from one (Pskov grave 6, Shestovitsa grave 42, Timerevo grave 100) to as many as twelve examples (Gnezdovo grave C-306). Apart from chamber graves, from Russia and Ukraine there are also other types of graves, dated to the second half of the 10th – 11th century, which contained wax and candles. They were found in Gnezdovo (grave L-148) (fig. 8.11), Timerevo (mound 323) (fig. 8.10), Saki (mound 54(1)) (fig. 8.13), Starcy (fig. 8.14) Vahrushevo (mound CXVI), and Sednev (mound 2(1886) (fig. 8.12). Parallel finds are also known from Western and Northern Europe. The oldest discovery comes from the cemetery in Oberflacht dated to the 6th-7th century (fig. 9.3-5), and the youngest from Norway (graves in Grønhaug, Storhaug, Oseberg, Larvik and Lille Gullkronen (mound 7)) and Denmark (graves in Jelling, Mammen (fig. 10), Søllested, Brandstrup (fig. 9.2; 11). In the Early Middle Ages wax was a valued commodity and probably fairly expensive. Scholars point out that wax and candles in funerary contexts are connected with individuals of high material and social status. Candles can also have a very deep symbolic meaning in pagan and Christian beliefs. Chamber graves with candles are probably older than the official date of the Christianisation of Rus’ (988/989), but the people in places like Gnezdovo, Pskov, Timerevo and Shestovitsa had contact with Christianity about 100 years earlier. Chamber graves with candles contain Christian symbols like silver crosses/ pendants and other (fig. 12). In my opinion candles had an apotropaic meaning, and the graves with candles may be interpreted as a sign of an individual conversion of social elite to Christianity before official Christianisation.

Opis:
In the 2015 season, the underwater research in Lake Lednica focused on further exploration of two exploration plots of the Poznań bridge — 7 in the XCV area and 5 in the XCIII area and on the opening of a trial trench in the area of Ostrów Lednicki island. During the exploration of plot 5 in the XCIII zone, the wicker object in a radiating out shape was localised. Because of its archaeological value and the need of further exploration, the object was excavated and handed over to the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica for preservation. The excavated object is probably a trap, a type of fish trap called ‘wiersza’ (a wicker fish trap). During examination of the object and cleaning after excavation, a great number of animal bone remains were collected and analysed. They almost exclusively came from fishes. In the bone material, the remains of several fishes were found: a catfish, eight perches, a pike, the fishes of the Cyprinidae family, including at least two roaches, as well as three remains of a pig. In the case of a catfish and the perches there were elements from all parts of the skeletons, while several bones belonged to two roaches and there was one pike tooth. The latter element was probably included in the assemblage accidentally. The conducted analysis shows that the catfish with SL (standard length) 70–75 cm and the perches, in most cases the large ones with SL=35–45 cm, were trapped in the fish trap. It is, however, not certain whether the roaches caught in the trap or had earlier been caught by predatory fish or fishes found in the trap. It is suspected that a phalanx and two ribs of a young pig, which probably come from the same animal, are the remains of a fishing bait placed in the wicker fish trap. Radiocarbon dating of the organic material which the object was made of indicates that it was placed after the bridge was no longer in use, probably in the late 12th or the early 13th century. For unspecified reasons the described wicker fish trap was not emptied and was left among the relics of the early medieval bridge. The discovery of the remains of the wicker fish trap and the analysis of its contents brought new information about one of the ways of fish harvesting used by the inhabitants of the area of Lake Lednica and its efficiency.

Abstract: On site 1 in Wolin, in test trenches were discovered numerous antler artefacts associated with two comb production workshops from the 10th-11th century. There were produced only one-sided, three-layer combs of group IB, type VII, varieties 7f and 8a as well as varieties 5b and 9. From the waste were produced also conical holders, rectangular mounts, arrowheads, tool handles, pegs, curry combs, while of bone were occasionally made awls.

Opis:
The problem of the meaning of miniature zoo- and anthropomorphic artefacts regardless of the finds’ chronology is the subject of very lively discussion in literature. It is no different in the case of small figural sculptures from early medieval Pomerania. Characteristics of specific groups of such representations and individual artefacts appear in the literature sporadically and usually in the context of broader research problems. Usually they are associated with customs related generally to religious beliefs or everyday life, the practical sphere of everyday life, where they are treated primarily as toys. There still lacks a broader approach to the problem using the findings of religious and anthropological studies as well as the use of ethnographic analogies. The aim of this text is to undertake such a broader analysis. Three groups of artefacts underwent a detailed analysis: so-called miniature idols, representations of horses and representations of boats. These artefacts, because of their nature, could have fulfilled several functions at the same time. An important role was probably also played by raw material from which these items were made, which allowed a transformation or destruction of given representations. Although a utilitarian function for these objects cannot be completely negated, as in the case of boats, which, in some cases, could have been used as toys, in our opinion they should be associated with a wider sphere of symbolic and religious life, where each element is perceived in mythical terms.

Opis:

Omawiany grot włóczni reprezentuje typ IV w klasyfikacji A. Nadolskiego (1954). Obejmuje on okazy średnich rozmiarów (nieprzekraczających 30 cm długości, często krótszych – poniżej 20 cm), krępe, o stosunkowo długiej tulei.
In November 2020, an early medieval spearhead was donated to the Museum in Piotrków Trybunalski by an inhabitant of the village of Lubień, Piotrków Trybunalski County. The artefact was discovered on a forest trackway (Fig. 1), 900 m to the north-east from the center of the early medieval cemetery at Lubień. The relic was located close to the ground surface. Its localization in this place is probably connected with earthworks from 1970, during which the central part of the Lubień necropolis was discovered and partially destroyed (Fig. 2). Approximately 35% of the cemetery area was destroyed, which, according to a spatial-chronological analysis, is connected with the initial phase of the whole burial complex (1st quarter of the 11th century). The iron spearhead has a lanceolate leaf, flat-oblong in cross section; it preserved in poor condition (Fig. 3). The rib is slightly marked and only visible on one side of the leaf, which may be due to corrosion, as is the case with the edge loss. The hexagonal spearhead sleeve, although not a clearly defined attribute uniformly tapers upward and was joined “overlapping”. Its edge is partially destroyed. No rivet holes were registered. The discussed spearhead represents type IV in the classification by A. Nadolski (1954). This type includes medium-sized specimens (not exceeding 30 cm in length, often shorter than 20 cm), spiny, with a relatively long sleeve. The lower edges of the heart-shaped leaf are blunted on a short section. The spearheads of this type were probably used in combat against an opponent without body armour They showed little penetrating power, compensated by a considerable striking surface. In the identification of type IV spearheads the ratio of the maximum width of the leaf to its length can be used, which should not be greater than 1:2. Type IV spearheads are infrequently in Poland (30 pcs.). Specimens of this form are known mainly from cemeteries, mainly used in the 11th century, possibly even from the beginning of the 12th century. They are concentrated mainly in Masovia, especially in its northern part (Fig. 4). A small group forms four specimens from Greater Poland, while in the remaining area there are only single finds (Kuyavia, central Poland, Lesser Poland). Type IV spearheads are also sporadically found outside of Poland. There are examples from the 11th century (less frequently also from the 11th–12th century) from medieval Ruthenia and the eastern part of the Baltic Sea Basin. They were slightly more numerous in northern Germany, especially in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein. Assuming that the spearhead came from one of the graves destroyed in 1970, we can talk about another step towards the recovery of materials lost at that time. This gives hope for further discoveries, which will be possible thanks to the planned prospecting of the cemetery area.

Oparte były o zasadę równowagi, umiarkowania i indywidualnego podejścia do człowieka.
The concern for health, the elimination of suffering and illness in the physical and spiritual dimension has been the subject of theoretical reflection since antiquity. Medieval medical treatises, written at the Salerno medical school, dealt in detail with food substances, classifying them as nourishment and effective remedies for many conditions. Diet was considered an integral part of a person's overall wellbeing. Food and drink had nutritional, preventive, and healing functions. Dietary recommendations were based on formed knowledge, observation, experience and were justified by the rules of humoral pathology. They were based on the principles of balance, moderation, and an individual approach to a person.

The following text is dedicated to early medieval strongholds built in Mazovia between the end of the 9th and the end of the 11th c. At least 39 sites can be dated to that period, among them 14 were built in the so-called “tribal” period, while the other ones are associated with the early Piast state structures. One should emphasize the small number of “tribal” strong¬holds and their concentration to the north of the middle Vistula river. The standardized form of the oldest fortifications refers directly to the so-called Tornow type. Apparently, the first strongholds associated with the expansion of the early Piast state appeared at the end of the 10th c. in the western Mazovia and the main building activity was limited to that area until the end of the 11th c. Noteworthy, at least up to the mid-11th c. both “tribal” and early-state strongholds existed near to each other.

The text presents spiral knives, objects of clearly exceptional nature. The data, the map and table included here are meant to update information on the subject after 32 years. Identification of the specific regional groups and a metric analysis of the historical objects highlight the differences between the groups. The text also touches upon objects which are morphologically close to the spiral knives used by nomadic communities. A critical look at the theories in literature on the subject allowed to limit the functions to two, possibly mutually complementary.

The article presents the results of archaeological field survey carried out by the Archaeological – Conservator’s Studio Alina Jaszewska on site 20 in Bnin in 2013. In the area with the width of 65 m, length: 75 m 60 features were uncovered related to population settlement of the Lusatian Culture (45), the Przeworsk culture (5) and from the early Middle Ages (10) and the modern times (2). The oldest phase of inhabiting this land alls in the Neolithic period, which links only single pieces of ceramics. The next, dated to the 5th EB and HaC, contains most numerous features forming a compact utility zone of the settlement and a set of 342 fragments of dishes. Late Roman period is the period of the residential feature and several utility buildings open in dispersion and 104 pieces of dishes. With regard to the early Middle Ages two phases are distinguished: older, connecting at least 5 features in a period from the 2nd half of the 7th –1 half of the 8th century, earlier to the 2nd half of the 8th century and 1st half of the 9th century. Dating an early medieval settlement uses the 14C analysis.
