Opis:
Model tests of propeller performance in bollard conditions, in deep and shallow water, were carried out at Ship Design and Research Centre in Gdansk. Corresponding calculations of propeller performance with account for finite dimensions of canal cross-section were carried out at Wroclaw University of Technology by using their own theoretical model of propeller -hull interaction. The calculations were carried out in model scale, at the same water depth as in model tests. For given hull form, propeller geometry and canal cross-section the HPSDK computer code was used to calculate wake fraction, as well as propeller thrust, torque and efficiency. The distribution of pressure on waterway bottom and ship sinkage were also determined.

Opis:
This paper investigates the open-water characteristics of the 5-blade propeller with accelerating and decelerating ducts using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation code. In the first step, numerical open-water hydrodynamic characteristics of the propeller in the absence of a duct were validated using the available experimental data. The shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model was chosen, which shows less error in thrust and torque coefficients than others. In the second step, two accelerating and decelerating ducts, namely ducts 19A and N32, were modeled. In these simulations, the clearance value was selected at 3 percent of the propeller’s diameter and uniform-flow conditions were assumed. After analysis of the mesh sensitivity for the propeller thrust, the results were compared to the corresponding open-water condition values. In this regard, results of the hydrodynamic coefficients, pressure distribution, and coefficients on the propeller-blade surface and ducts were also analyzed and discussed.

Opis:
The self-propulsion test of underwater vehicles is the key technique for predicting and evaluating the navigation performance of these submersibles. In this study, the numerical simulation of a standard propeller JD7704+Ka4-70 is first presented and the results are compared with experiments to validate the numerical approaches. The reason why the propulsion efficiency of the ducted propeller is higher than that of the conventional propeller is explored. Then, the paper proposes a series of numerical simulations conducted to test the performance of the ducted propeller designed according to the JD7704+Ka4-70 in order to match with the unmanned semi-submerged vehicle (USSV), and the propeller’s open water characteristic curves are obtained. The results show a reasonable agreement with the regression analysis. Afterwards, the numerical simulations focus on a self-propulsion test of the USSV with the designed ducted propeller and the self-propulsion point is obtained. The streamlines through the hull as well as the ducted propellers are clearly obtained, together with the velocity distributions of the propeller plane. The results vividly demonstrate the hydrodynamic performance of the USSV with the designed propellers. In this paper, all the CFD simulations are based on the numerical software, Star-CCM+, and use the Reynolds-averaged Navier‒Stokes (RANS) equations with the shear stress transport (SST) k-omega turbulence model.

Opis:
It is well known that an application of the duct around a fan or a propeller may improve its performance. The duct gives also several other benefits. One could expect that this propulsion will become popular, not only in aviation. Meanwhile only a few airplanes powered by ducted fans have been designed. So low popularity of this propulsion means that it may have some significant limitations. The following paper is an attempt to encapsulate the advantages and disadvantages of the ducted fans and ducted propellers applied as pushers. The authors based on their own experience and on the literature. Many years of experience in the design, modeling, construction and operation of drives by duct fan aircraft, helicopters, ultralight aircraft and hovercraft can draw conclusions that can be helpful in the design process of new construction.

Opis:
A pusher propeller is one of popular types of the airplane propulsion. It is applied especially in light sport aircrafts and in the UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). Its main advantage is that the engine with the pusher propeller does not affect the visibility from the cockpit and allows placing an electronic equipment in the front part of the UAV’s fuselage. The main disadvantage of the pusher propeller is that its performance may be worse than the tractor propeller, because of a stream distortion caused by the fuselage. It should be taken into account during propeller tests. The most accurate way is to investigate the pusher propeller in the presence of the complete airplane, as a part of airplane wind tunnel tests. However, this approach is possible in a late stage of the airplane design, when the geometry of the airplane is fixed. In the paper, an alternative, innovative approach for the propulsion tests has been presented. The propeller was investigated in a wind tunnel in a presence of the aft part of the fuselage, including a root part of the wing. A typical propeller and a ducted fan have been investigated. The results has been compared with the results of the wind tunnel tests of the complete airplane (with powered propulsion) to evaluate the accuracy of this methodology. The investigated propulsion was designed for a joined wing UAV, ILX-32 MOSUPS.
