Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze cognitive distraction data to determine its impact of transit bus drivers' capability. Much of the theory and results applied in this paper are from the work of researchers working on similar projects. In order to understand cognitive distraction and how it can be mitigated, a Cognitive Distraction Model is outlined. The model was analyzed to evaluate the correlation between driver capability, and demographics and driving patterns. A model that provides an understanding about cognitive workload and driver capability could provide better psychological solutions to mitigate the number of accidents due to cognitive distraction and develop relevant driver training programs. Through additional research from the neurological and behavioral sciences, regulators could develop a better understanding of the causal factors and ways to control cognitive distraction.

Analysis of accidents has found driver distraction to be a significant cause of accidents on the highways [1]. Therefore, studying the causes of driver distraction that impact its risk level is needed for a better understanding of accident occurrences. There is general scarcity of research in this field with no established research framework to study driver distractions. This paper proposes a modular research framework for conducting a driver distraction study on Polish city highways. The framework contains guidelines for distraction studies for wide range of cost and time intervals such as a quick, low cost study like analysis of existing accident databases maintained by the cities to relatively higher cost, longer duration study involving field data collection, statistical modeling, and analysis. A city may choose one or more modules to suit their study requirements including statistical and simulation tools to assess and validate the historical or empirical result. The framework is based on the careful modifications and revisions of an earlier transit bus driver study conducted in the Commonwealth of Virginia, U.S.A., and results from this research are presented for purposes of illustration.

The paper investigates immediate and distracted imitation in second-language speech using unreleased plosives. Unreleased plosives are fairly frequently found in English sequences of two stops. Polish, on the other hand, is characterised by a significant rate of releases in such sequences. This cross-linguistic difference served as material to look into how and to what extent non-native properties of sounds can be produced in immediate and distracted imitation. Thirteen native speakers of Polish first read and then imitated sequences of words with two stops straddling the word boundary. Stimuli for imitation had no release of the first stop. The results revealed that (1) a non-native feature such as the lack of the release burst can be imitated; (2) distracting imitation impedes imitative performance; (3) the type of a sequence interacts with the magnitude of an imitative effect

Particularly in the latter half of the nineteenth century sensorial experiences changed at breakneck speed. Social and technological developments of modernity like the industrial revolution, rapid urban expansion, the advance of capitalism and the invention of new technologies transformed the field of the senses. Instead of attentiveness, distraction became prevalent. It is not only Baudelaire who addressed these transformations in his poems, but they can also be recognized in the works of novelist Gustave Flaubert and painter Edward Munch. By means of the work of William James, Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Georg Simmel, the repercussions of this crisis of the senses for subjectivity will be discussed.

Western aesthetics has privileged contemplation as a necessary condition for authentic aesthetic experience. In contrast, I argue that the adequacy of aesthetic comportment must be measured by the self-presentation of the object in question, shaped by the place from which such presentations issue. Thus, the specific character of many forms of art, particularly in urban contexts, solicits a kind of “distracted” engagement rather than contemplative attention. Distraction is a positive mode of aesthetic engagement. I begin with a critical account of the formalist theories of Kant and Bell as examples of this privileging of contemplative hermeneutics. I then consider Walter Benjamin’s theory of mimesis as a basis for a more fruitful account of aesthetic form, of which certain “distractive” artworks serve as examples. Distraction is an appropriate response to certain presentations, in the face of which absorption would be a kind of aesthetic failure.

Wnioski z analiz pozwalają rekomendować ograniczenie obecności w otoczeniu drogi elementów, takich jak reklamy i inne obiekty mogące powodować rozproszenie użytkowników o osłabionej sprawności procesów uwagi.
The article presents the results of analyzes carried out based on the results of psychological tests for professional drivers, taking into account indicators of susceptibility to distraction and their dependence on age. It has been shown that with age the speed of information processing decreases, there are also more wrong decisions made, and anomalies in recognizing objects. The strongest decrease in performance was observed in the test requiring the assessment of the speed and ability to anticipate the movement of objects. Generally, with increasing complexity of the tasks the effect of age on the markers of inattention (distracting the attention) in the driving situations, was greater. The conclusions of the analyses allow to recommend limiting the presence in the road vicinity of such elements as advertisements and other objects that may cause attention distraction of the road users with the weakened attention processes.

Opis:
: Research done in recent years shows that Virtual Reality (VR) can be an effective tool for distracting attention from pain. The purpose of this study was to test how the complexity of Virtual Environment (VE) influences the experienced intensity of thermal pain stimuli. A within-subjects design experiment was conducted, using cold pressor test for pain stimulation. Research was done on 31 students of Wroclaw Universities. Participants played games created for the purpose of the study, using head mounted displays and movement sensors. Two Virtual Environments differing in the level of complexity and non-VR control condition were used. The order of all conditions was counterbalanced. Participants reported significantly lower pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale) after playing the high complexity game, compared to the low complexity game. There were also significant differences between non-VR control condition and high complexity game, but not between non-VR and low complexity game. The pain tolerance (measured by time of keeping the hand in cold water) was significantly higher in both VR conditions comparing to non-VR conditions. However, no significant differences between VE’s were found in pain tolerance ratings. Results of this study provide preliminary evidence that game complexity can be related to pain experience during VR interventions.

Distraction Osteogenesis (DO) is a surgical technique used to reconstruct bone defects. To improve the current treatment protocols, the knowledge of the mechanical properties of the bone regenerate is of major interest. The aim of this study, constituting the second part of our paper previously published in Acta of Bioengineering and Biomechanics, was to identify the elastic and viscous properties of bone callus. This is done in the case of a mandibular DO by analyzing the experimental measurements of the forces imposed on bone regenerate by a distraction device. The bone transport forces were evaluated thanks to strain gauges glued on the distraction device. A rheological model describing the callus constitutive behavior was developed and the material constants involved were identified. The time-dependent character of the bone regenerate mechanical behavior was confirmed. The viscous response of the mesenchymal tissue was described by two characteristic times. The first one describing the viscoelastic callus behavior was estimated to be 140 seconds and the second one representing the permanent bone callus lengthening was evaluated to be 5646 seconds. An average value of 0.35 MPa for the regenerate Young’s modulus was deduced. The elastic properties of mesenchymal tissue found are in agreement with the rare data available in the literature.

The goal of this study was to test the efficacy of a tactile attention distraction from pain and compare its effectiveness with a virtual reality (VR) distraction on an analogous task. VR is considered to be the gold standard for attention distraction, but it cannot be used in certain clinical cases or for particular medical procedures. A repeated-measures experimental study was carried out with 42 participants using tactile and VR variants of an n-back task and a cold pressor test for pain. The independent variable was the distraction type (tactile, VR, or no-distraction) and the dependent variable was pain tolerance (i.e., time participants kept their hand in cold water). The results showed that both tactile and VR games effectively increased pain tolerance compared to the control condition. Effect sizes for both interventions were similar. However, the effect was observed only for female participants.

The lack of attention during the driving task is considered as a major risk factor for fatal road accidents around the world. Despite the ever-growing trend for autonomous driving which promises to bring greater road-safety benefits, the fact is today’s vehicles still only feature partial and conditional automation, demanding frequent driver action. Moreover, the monotony of such a scenario may induce fatigue or distraction, reducing driver awareness and impairing the regain of the vehicle’s control. To address this challenge, we introduce a non-intrusive system to monitor the driver in terms of fatigue, distraction, and activity. The proposed system explores state-of-the-art sensors, as well as machine learning algorithms for data extraction and modeling. In the domain of fatigue supervision, we propose a feature set that considers the vehicle’s automation level. In terms of distraction assessment, the contributions concern (i) a holistic system that covers the full range of driver distraction types and (ii) a monitoring unit that predicts the driver activity causing the faulty behavior. By comparing the performance of Support Vector Machines against Decision Trees, conducted experiments indicated that our system can predict the driver’s state with an accuracy ranging from 89% to 93%.

In this study, we aimed to determine the role of visual speech cues in the process of foreign language learning by hearing school-age children. Our experiments used Cued Speech, a method designed for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. We expected that the principles of the method might also be beneficial for people with normal hearing because they may help distinguish the sounds of foreign speech that are difficult to hear. This study mainly focused on the effects of speech perception. We tested 126 Polish junior high school students (66 girls and 60 boys) with a normal range of phonemic hearing and language aptitude. We envisaged that foreign language learners using visual speech cues would achieve a higher score on a test of foreign language than learners who had studied the language in the traditional manner. We also formulated a hypothesis concerning the interaction of training type and training conditions on the effectiveness of foreign language learning: that the difference in the effects of foreign language learning between participants who received visual or executive training and typical training would be more significant in the presence of auditory distractors than in their absence. We observed interactions between conditions and types of training for speech sound identification. Under conditions of auditory distraction, foreign language learners using Cued Speech scored significantly higher than learners who had traditional training.

Aim of the study: Testing the effectiveness of three pain stimuli distraction types based on the use of virtual reality. Materials and Methods: 16 students aged 20-32 were, using virtual reality goggles, exposed to the stimulating distraction condition – a rollercoaster ride, relaxing distraction condition – a walk through the forest or control condition -  a black screen was displayed. The pain was induced by submerging one’s arm in freezing water. The measures of the distraction effectiveness were: the time for which the participant could withstand the pain stimulus and a VAS scale, on which participants rated the level of pain they felt. At the end, the measurments were compared to the results of the PTS temperament survey. Results: Participants withstood the pain stimulus significantly longer in the distraction condition than in the control condition; however, no significant differences were found between the stimulating and the relaxing condition. None of the conditions had any influence on the reported level of pain. Women withstood the pain stimuli significantly longer than men in both the stimulating and the relaxing condition and reported a lower level of pain in the stimulating condition than men. A significant, positive correlation between PTS’ Strength of Inhibition subscale result and the time of withstanding the pain stimulus was found in all three conditions of the experiment. Outcome: Evidence of the influence of virtual reality-based distraction on extending the pain stimulus suppression time has been provided. However, no differences in distraction effectiveness between the stimulating and relaxing condition have been observed.
Cel badań  Badanie skuteczności rodzaju dystrakcji od bodźców bólowych polegającej na wykorzystaniu wirtualnej rzeczywistości. Materiały i metody. Rezultaty. Badani istotnie dłużej znosili działanie bodźca bólowego w warunkach dystrakcji, niż w warunku kontrolnym; lecz nie stwierdzono istotnej różnicy pomiędzy warunkiem pobudzającym, a warunkiem relaksującym. Kobiety istotnie dłużej znosiły działanie bodźca bólowego w warunku pobudzającym i relaksującym, oraz deklarowały istotnie niższe odczucie bólu w warunku pobudzającym. Wykryto również dodatnią korelację wyników uzyskanych w skali Siły Procesu Hamowania kwestionariusza PTS z czasem wytrzymywania bodźca bólowego we wszystkich trzech warunkach eksperymentu. Wyniki.

The text is an article of reflection aiming to examine causes of disproportions between the amount of effort undertaken by leading international institutions in the field of education and the quality of European school systems measured by the attainment of curricular goals. As worrying trends have been observed mainly at the classroom level, psychological rather than organizational factors need to be examined. It is hypothesized that current didactic problems should be explained by attention rather than motivation deficits. The paper, therefore, analyzes various types and aspects of attention, tendencies to misdirect it as well as ways of building and maintaining attention in order to counteract distraction, boredom and overstimulation of both teachers and learners. Suggestions are also formulated for pre- and in-service teacher education programs which are postulated to give more emphasis to the role of attention as well as to provide a toolkit of verbal and non-verbal strategies which may help language teachers to elicit and sustain learners’ attention without departing from the lesson scenario.

A central concern of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is the effect of in-vehicle devices (e.g., cell phones, navigation systems, radios, etc.) on driver performance and safety. As diverse and innovative technologies are designed and implemented for in-vehicle use, questions regarding the presence and use of these devices assume progressively greater importance. Further concerns for advanced driver training require us to develop and validate reliable and effective procedures for assessing such effects. This work examines a number of candidate procedures, in particular the evaluation of change in cognitive workload as a strategy by which such goals might be achieved.
