Learning a foreign language in the context of formal education often imposes on students the management of difficult tasks. This demands an adoption of adequate coping behaviour (achievement vs. avoidance). Easy tasks reduce learning opportunities, while too difficult ones lead to escape-motivated problem behavior. For the purpose of the present research it is proposed that the level of FL task difficulty is related to coping behaviour. The empirical results demonstrate that students who perceive FL tasks as difficult apply more avoidance strategies. Apart from that, students with higher and lower levels of task difficulty use similar amounts of achievement strategies. It follows that the implementation of achievement coping is independent from the level of task difficulty.

This study investigated whether difficulty manipulation strategies affect learning in the fine motor coordination task, perceived competence (PC) and perceived difficulty (PD). Thirty -nine novices’ right - handed boys (age 11.3 ± 0.4 years; stature 147 ± 8.94 cm ; body mass 40.57 ± 0.07 kg; mean ± SD), volunteers, were assigned to either control group (CTG: no difficulty manipulation)and two experimental groups: group 1 (EG1: one -dimension difficulty manipulation) and group 2 (EG2: two- dimensions difficulty manipu lation). All protocol sessions were conducted at the same time -of-day, in which, there were three periods: familiarization, acquisition and retention phases. Moreover, two stress- conditions of darts throw were investigated (i.e.: free condition (FC) and ti me pressure condition (TPC)). Results showed significant effect between - groups (p = 0.01, η2 = 0.215) based on difficulty strategies manipulation. Analysis showed an improvement in accuracy values in retention tests for only EG1and a significant l ower coefficient of variation (p = 0.41, η2 = 0.154) compared to the CTG and EG2. Errors decrease over time for CTG in FC (p = 0.041, η2= 0.203) but not in TPC, while no significant differences in errors for EG1 and EG2 (p = 0.19, η2 = 0.911) in the two st ress -conditions. Moreover, PD was significantly different between all test - phases (p = 0.041, η2 = 0.234) for EG1 only. The one -dimension learning strategy improves retention in accuracy performances, whereas, both strategies, do not affect errors in both FC and TPC . Therefore, teachers in physical education are not encouraged to combine difficulties in learning process of a novel fine motor coordination task.

We have investigated the relationship between performance in sports exercises and perceived difficulties inphysical ability tasks for boys and girls. In order to assess physical abilities in sport, we conducted experimentsconcerning methods for self-evaluating the difficulty of physical ability required in sports exercises throughimplementation of creative vaulting tasks in addition to Eurofit and Evareg tests. Based on a hypothesis thatspecific physical abilities could predict performance in physical education for boys and girls, we distinguishedthe relationship between genders concerning perceived difficulty for varied ability tasks. Although sportingexercises performance was high among boys rather than girls, there was no significant difference in perceiveddifficulties of physical tasks between genders. We highlight how perceived difficulties among students appears tohave resulted in higher student motivation levels, and increased desire to improve performance for more effectivelearning and teaching experience. We recommend that methods of perceiving difficulties in sport exercises needmore exploration for better practices

Preschool diagnosis, supported by observation, as it is often the first study, on the basis of which the regularity or irregularity of a child’s development can be stated. It is the duty of teachers in relation to the results of this diagnosis, to take action to support the development of a child diagnosed with problems / delays / disharmony and disorder in order to reduce them. Early diagnosis and, consequently, early action enable one to avoid deepening the problems/disorders/disharmony or delays, and allows the child to function in the family and society.

Difficulty is the personal experience of a subject facing resistance that prevents them from reaching a goal or desired state. It is an experiential part of everyone’s existence. In digital games, difficulty is strongly linked with designed challenges and obstacles that must be overcome by physical effort, manual skills, coordination, and dexterity. But this widespread perspective is a reductionist categorization of the expressive possibilities of difficulty. Because as experiential, difficulty is aesthetic expression and therefore it is much more than the mere skill challenge. The difficulty experience that emerges from an opposing force between object and subject, between game and player, can be interpretive, poetic, narrative, ethical or atmospheric among other expressive forms. Understanding difficulty from these broad parameters, we pose it as an aesthetic expression, which forges multiple experiences at the intersection between mechanics, fiction, and the player’s performance. This study analyses, drawing from philosophy, postphenomenology, and game studies, some aspects of two contemporary games, The Last of Us Part II and Death Stranding from the view of difficulty as aesthetic experience perspective, considering the significant and discursive tensions beyond purely ludic and mechanical elements.

Knowledge of derivational morphology is considered an important aspect of vocabulary knowledge both in L1 (mother tongue) and L2 (second or foreign language) English language learning. However, it is still not clear whether different derivational affixes vary in their (learning) difficulty. The present study examines whether Bauer and Nation’s (1993) teaching order of L2 English affixes can account for the difficulty learners have with recognising the affixes. The participants in the study were L1 Estonian and Russian learners of English at uppersecondary schools in Estonia (n = 62). Their performance was measured on a word segmentation task. There were significant differences in the number of affixes the learners were able to successfully recognise at different levels, as classified by Bauer and Nation (1993). By and large, with the exception of no significant difference between Level 5 and Level 6 affixes, the higher the affix level was, the less likely the learners were to recognise the affixes at this level. I argue that these results can support the order proposed by Bauer and Nation. The implications of the finding for teaching and further research are also discussed.

The article aims to show the role and meaning of the father in his daughter’s life. For a daughter who grew up without a father – who was absent in physical and emotional way – what results are serious consequences which affect her adult life. For example, those results are different types of psychological difficulties (of emotional, intrapsychic, or interpersonal nature). The author’s survey of the cases is based on the letters of adult daughters to their fathers, which contain a kind of retrospection. On the basis of the analyzed material what has been distinguished are the following consequences: the deficit of time spent with father becomes for daughter the cause of her inability to establish interpersonal relationships and create relationships; the deficit of affection shown by father is a source of impoverishment in his daughter’s emotional life; father’s absence in or abandonment of the family is for his daughter the cause of stress and depression.

The aim of the study was to examine the relations between variables connected with the reader (interest in the text topic and willingness to read it) and the level of reading comprehension among adults, after controlling for text difficulty. The study involved 1549 users of Polish aged from 18 to 87. Open-ended questions were used to measure reading comprehension. It was proved that the model taking into account variables related to the reader better predicted reading comprehension than the model only taking into account text difficulty. Moderation analysis showed a little stronger relation between text topic interest and reading comprehension in the group of women than in the group of men. It was also noted that among adults with lower levels of education text topic interest and willingness to read it were more strongly related to the level of comprehension than among better educated people. The discussion focuses on the role of psychological factors in reading comprehension.

Dynamiczny rozwój nowoczesnej gospodarki opartej na wiedzy wiąże się z koniecznością kształtowania płac adekwatnie do trudności wykonywanej pracy. Określenie zakresu i stopnia, w jakim czynności wykonywane na poszczególnych stanowiskach pracy różnią się, jaka jest wartość wymaganego wykształcenia i doświadczenia zawodowego, jakie kwalifikacje powinny być uwzględnione w wynagrodzeniu, a w jakim stopniu odpowiedzialność za pracę, jak ocenić obciążenia psychiczne lub wysiłek fizyczny, a także uciążliwość warunków pracy, wymagają silnego wsparcia metodologicznego. Metoda „Quatro” umożliwia alokację środków na wynagrodzenia zgodnie z określonym poziomem trudności w pracy. Badania 920 stanowisk pracy w dziedzinie logistyki usług lotniskowych, w których można zaobserwować pełny przekrój zadań wymagających zarówno kwalifikacji ogólnych, jak i specyficznych, wykazały, że wymagany poziom specyficznych kwalifikacji znacznie przewyższa poziom kwalifikacji ogólnych. Równocześnie, kryteria oceny trudności w pracy w technicznym środowisku pracy usług lotniskowych były znacznie rozszerzone ze względu na obecność wielu potencjalnych czynników ryzyka. W rezultacie badań stwierdzono, że na stanowiskach pracy wymagających specyficznych kwalifikacji z zakresu obsługi lotniskowej, poziom wynagrodzeń prawie połowy badanych stanowisk, nie był adekwatny do występujących tam trudności pracy i odpowiedzialności za bezpieczeństwo w portach lotniczych.
The dynamic development of a modern knowledge-based economy results with the necessity of shaping wages according to the difficulties of the performed work. Human work evaluation is a very complex and delicate problem. Determining the extent to which activities performed at individual workplaces differ, what is the value of required education and work experience, which qualifications should be included in wages, and to what extent the responsibility of work should be reflected by the remuneration, how to assess mental or physical effort or working conditions requires a strong methodological support. The "Quatro" method enables to allocate funds for remuneration according to the determined level of work difficulty. The research carried out of 920 workplaces in the domain of airport services logistics, where a full cross-section of positions requiring both general and specific qualifications can be observed, showed that the level of specific qualifications is significantly higher than the level of general qualifications, and criteria for assessing the difficulty of working in the environment must be expanded due to the presence of many potential risk factors. As a result, jobs requiring specific qualifications should be paid three Times higher than for jobs requiring general qualifications.

The author of this study suggests an idea that the auditive element of digital games is soon going to be one of the most important factors influencing their overall success, popularity, and originality. He analyses the phenomenon of binaural and ambisonic sound, its evolution and uses in the context of modern audio-visual work, primarily focusing on games. The auditive component and its increasingly important role are analyzed in connection with the graphic design of games, virtual reality, as well as the popularity of specific games. This paper also focuses on audio-games, the use of binaural sound (which was first used on a large scale in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice) and various hybrid digital games, which are balancing between classic games and audio-games. Argumentation is based on an assumption that binaural sound is the way to ambisonic sound, which (within the context of the immersive and interactive character of digital games) predestines the new standard and shows an entirely new way of creating and using digital games at the same time. All of this is reflected in the context of the graphic design of digital games and their future.

The article presents the linguistic games in selected poems by Małgorzata Strzałkowska. The subject of the research were 300 works from ten volumes that have been published over the last twenty-five years. The text examines these verbal games, which are mainly based on the sound layer of the utterance, i.e. sounds / sounds, onomatopoeia, rhymes, and rhythm. It was found that Strzałkowska’s poems can be ready-made lesson plans that can be used in Polish lessons, in phonetics, in voice emission as well as during speech diagnosis or therapy.

Empirical Verification of the Polish Formula of Text DifficultyThe aim of the study was to verify the accuracy of the formula for assessing the difficulty of texts written in Polish (Pisarek 1969). The study involved 1,309 persons aged between 15 and 84. 15 texts were used, each approximately 300 words long, representing different subjects and varied difficulty level. Text comprehension was checked with multiple choice tests, the cloze procedure and open-ended questions. Significant correlations between the difficulty of a text and its comprehension were found (rmc(15) = -0.529, p = 0.043; ropen = -0.519, p = 0.047; rcloze = -0.656, p = 0.008). The results confirmed relative accuracy and usefulness of Pisarek's readability formula. The discussion includes proposed ways of improving the current form of the formula.

People believe that the effects of unecological behaviors may be compensated for by engaging in alternative conservation activities. The problem is, however, that those who hold such beliefs are less likely to engage in real behaviors. Understanding the structure of compensatory beliefs could potentially minimize this negative effect. In a pair of studies (qualitative and quantitative) we explored two aspects that appear key for compensatory beliefs 1) the similarity and 2) the relative difficulty of behaviors. We found that people spontaneously proposed compensatory behaviors which belonged to the same pro-ecological domain as the corresponding initial behaviors (Study 1). However, participants in the quantitative study agreed more often that they should compensate for one behavior with another when both behaviors belonged to the same cognitive category and simultaneously the compensatory behavior was relatively less demanding than the initial one (Study 2).

Gradation of difficulty is one of the fundamental didactic principles in religious instruction. The aim of this paper is to present the principle of gradation of difficulty as seen by the authors of new curricula for religious instruction at schools, which was approved in 2010. Consequently, the article begins with a description of the general understanding of the difficulty gradation principle in religious instruction as defined by contemporary methodologists. The next section presents how the issue is perceived by the authors of the amended „Core curriculum of catechesis of the Catholic Church in Poland” and „Curriculum of Roman-Catholic religious instruction in kindergartens and schools” prepared in connection with the former document. Final remarks contain, apart from conclusions and catechetic suggestions, specific guidelines for authors of new series of textbooks and religious instruction materials for various student groups.

Dynamic difficulty adjustment (DDA) in digital games involves altering the difficulty of a game based on real-time feedback from the player. Some approaches to DDA use measurements of player performance, such as success rate or score. Such performance-based DDA systems aim to provide a bespoke level of challenge to each player, so that the game is neither too hard nor too easy. Previous research on performance-based DDA shows that it is linked to better player performance but finds mixed results in terms of player experience (e.g., enjoyment). Also, while the concept of flow is regarded as an important aspect of digital game experience, little research has considered the effects of performance-based DDA on flow. We conducted an experiment on the effects of performancebased DDA on player performance, enjoyment, and experience of flow in a digital game. 221 participants played either the DDA version of the game, a control version (difficulty remained constant), or an incremental version (difficulty increased regardless of performance). Results show that the DDA group performed significantly better. However, there were no significant differences in terms of enjoyment or experience of flow.

The Elo rating algorithm, developed for the purpose of measuring player strength in chess tournaments, has also found application in the context of educational research and has been used for the purpose of measuring both learner ability and task difficulty. The quality of the estimations performed by the Elo rating algorithm has already been subject to research, and has been shown to deliver accurate estimations in both low and high-stake testing situations. However, little is known about the performance of the Elo algorithm in the context of learning environments where multiple attempts are allowed, feedback is provided, and the learning process spans several weeks or even months. This study develops the topic of Elo algorithm use in an educational context and examines its performance on real data from an online learning environment where multiple attempts were allowed, and feedback was provided after each attempt. Its performance in terms of stability of the estimation results in two analyzed periods for two groups of learners with different initial levels of knowledge are compared with alternative difficulty estimation methods: proportion correct and learner feedback. According to the results, the Elo rating algorithm outperforms both proportion correct and learning feedback. It delivers stable difficulty estimations, with correlations in the range 0.87–0.92 for the group of beginners and 0.72–0.84 for the group of experienced learners.

Opis:
The climb is the steep fragment of the road. In road cycling, climbs should be categorized by the effort necessary to overcome it. Two values have the greatest influence on a difficulty of the climb: its average slope (rise/run ratio) and length. A simple approach to describing a climb's difficulty is multiplication slope squared and run. In this paper, the beginning of the climb is mathematically established to get the most reliable difficulty index. Moreover, it is presented a special case where the value of difficulty index does not depend on the location of the beginning point.

The article investigates the level of language awareness manifested by the advanced learners of Polish as a FL (146 students of the Polish Language Course attending the School of Polish Language and Culture at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland). The exact focus is on learning outcomes (areas of language progress and regress), and perception of the Polish language material learnt (including grammar, vocabulary and phonology), an emphasis being put on most problematic issues. Having presented learners’ opinions and reflections on language, implications for teachers including teaching materials raising language awareness are offered.
Artykuł bada poziom świadomości językowej wśród zaawansowanych użytkowników języka polskiego jako obcego (146 uczestników kursu języka polskiego prowadzonego przez Szkołę Języka i Kultury Polskiej Uniwersytetu Śląskiego). Badana świadomość językowa odnosi się do rezultatów w nauce i obserwowanych zmian w języku respondentów oraz percepcji materiału językowego (gramatyki, słownictwa i elementów fonologii) pokazując przede wszystkim trudności językowe, z jakimi borykają się badani. Po ukazaniu najbardziej problematycznych kwestii, autorka przedstawia propozycję ćwiczeń podnoszącą świadomość językową osób uczących się języka polskiego.

The paper focuses on the assessment of text difficulty in six contemporary Czech science textbooks for fourth graders. Text analysis followed the authors’ own methodology. The results obtained reveal varying text difficulty between individual textbooks. Only textbooks by the Alter and SPN publishing companies comply with the difficulty scale for fourth-year textbooks and may be recommended for teaching.

The paper follows the first author’s continuous work on chemistry textbook analysis. In the previous paper published in CERP, attention was given to the procedure and results for analysing text-difficulty in lower-secondary chemistry textbooks in Czechia. In this paper, attention was given to non-chemical vocational school chemistry textbooks. They are intended for the most numerous group of upper-secondary students. The goal of the study was to assess the to what extent could students read the textbook texts on their own with appropriate understanding. Therefore, only the textual component was evaluated. The same method (Nestler-Prucha-Pluskal) as in the previous paper was used to analyse the textbooks’ text-difficulty (readability). The results show there are two books which are suitable for students’ own learning. However, there are four textbooks which contain text of high difficulty, including too many scientific terms that they are suitable as teacher’s guide through terms rather than student’s textbooks. The analysis may serve teachers with their textbook choice as well as researchers who operate in the same field who can easily adopt the methodology and compare results.

Opis:
Geometric knowledge and skills are necessary prerequisite for successful engineering study in many branches. Unfortunately, acquiring those is difficult for many even since the very beginning in primary and secondary schools and it needs to be supported. It is obvious that different students need different amounts of time to solve the same task. We raised a question whether or not the speed at which a student solves different tasks is a characteristic property of the individual student. We have analysed the data obtained during the eight years of operating GeoTest – an online system for the assignment of construction geometry tasks and automatic evaluation of the correctness of their solutions. The answer is that a student resolves some tasks quickly and some slowly (compared to another students).
Wiedza i umiejętności geometryczne są niezbędnym warunkiem udanego studiowania inżynierii w wielu branżach. Niestety, zdobycie ich jest trudne dla wielu i od początku, już w szkole podstawowej i średniej, należy je wspierać. Oczywistym jest, że różni uczniowie potrzebują różnej ilości czasu, aby rozwiązać to samo zadanie. W pracy autorzy postawili sobie pytanie, czy szybkość, z jaką uczeń rozwiązuje różne zadania, jest charakterystyczną właściwością każdego ucznia. Przeanalizowano dane uzyskane w ciągu ośmiu lat funkcjonowania GeoTest - internetowego systemu do przydzielania zadań geometrii konstrukcji i automatycznej oceny poprawności ich rozwiązań. Odpowiedź jest taka: uczeń rozwiązuje niektóre zadania szybko, a niektóre powoli (w porównaniu z innymi uczniami).

One of the main purposes of textbooks is the mediation of educational content to students. The factual accuracy of information, as well as the clarity of the text for students plays a crucial role in this aspect. The inadequate text difficulty can complicate students' learning. Comparing different approaches to the text in textbooks, considering the objectives of education, represents key knowledge for teaching materials innovation. This research was therefore focused on the comparison of the Slovak and Canadian science textbooks for lower secondary education. The methodology for assessing text difficulty according to Nestler, Prucha and Pluskal was used for this purpose. The samples of text from the textbooks for 6th and 8th grade of lower-secondary school were assessed. It was found that the text in Slovak textbooks is significantly more difficult. While from the syntactic difficulty point of view differences were rather partial, the significant differences were found in the semantic difficulty of the text. The Slovak textbooks are burdened with an excessive number of professional terms. Considering the results in measuring scientific literacy, this approach to the text in the Slovak textbooks is not effective. The results obtained are therefore an incentive to revise used educational materials.
