Opis:
Investigations concerned the effect of raising the dose of new Z-ion zeolite substrate on cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) growth. During the pot experiment, plants were grown on degraded soil, arable soil and mixtures of degraded soil with increasing Z-ion substrate additions (1%, 2%, 5%, 10% v/v). When the experiment was terminated, the mean values of the vegetative parameters of test species were calculated. The carbon to nitrogen ratio for cocksfoot stem biomass was determined. The enzyme diversity of the degraded soil enriched with substrate additions after cocksfoot growth (Shannon’s diversity index) was also evaluated. The application of Z-ion additions positively influenced the cocksfoot growth – the additions in the range of 1–10% v/v to degraded soil significantly increased wet and dry stem biomass, dry root biomass and total dry biomass of plants. It turned out that the Z-ion substrate addition not exceeding 1% v/v can be considered as one which – after introducing into a specific degraded soil – would give similar biomass yield of cocksfoot to that obtained on the selected arable soil. At 1% substrate dose, the carbon/nitrogen ratio in the plant material (27.17) was within the range of values ensuring the proper methane fermentation course. The preliminary studies have shown that a significant increase in enzyme diversity can be observed when there is a certain degree of root development caused by a sufficiently high addition of Z-ion substrate to the degraded soil – under experimental conditions it was 5% v/v Z-ion dose.

The aim of the study was to evaluate microbial functional diversity based on community level physiological profiling and b-glucosidase activity changes in soil degraded by sulphur mining and subjected to reclamation with various waste. The experiment was set up in the area of the former ‘Jeziórko’ Sulphur Mine (Poland), on a soilless substrate with a particle size distribution of slightly loamy sand. The experimental variants included the application of post-flotation lime, sewage sludge and mineral wool. The analyses of soil samples included the assessment of the following microbiological indices: b-glucosidase activity and functional diversity average well color development and richness). The results indicate that sewage sludge did not exert a significant impact on the functional diversity of microorganisms present in the reclaimed soil. In turn, the application of other types of waste contributed to a significant increase in the parameters of total metabolic activity and functional diversity of the reclaimed soil. However, the temporal analysis of the metabolic profile of soil microorganisms demonstrated that a single application of waste did not yield a durable, stable metabolic profile in the reclaimed soil. Still, there was an increase in β-glucosidase activity, especially in objects treated with sewage sludge.

This article shows the results assessment of the impact of various reclamation methods with the use of mineral wool and municipal sewage sludge on chemical and biological indicators, which have an impact on the improvement of the quality of soil degraded by sulfur well mining. The results of the research showed that the type of waste together with it application method, had a beneficial effect on the shaping of the chemical and biological properties of soil. The most favorable effect was noted in the conditions of combining mineral wool with sewage sludge. At this work we used the PHYTOTOXIKIT biological test, as an indicator of the ecotoxicological effect of selected waste added, for the efficiency of the soil remediation process.

Opis:
Soil degradation generates the need for reclamation measures. Bioaugmentation represents a promising method to treat degraded soils. The introduction of microorganisms into the soil often requires immobilisation. Porous media, such as biochar, have been used for the purpose. The introduction of individual bacteria into the soil requires the choice of a suitable medium to ensure high bacterial survival rate and effective bioaugmentation. The possibility of immobilization of Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azospirillum brasilense and a bacterial consortium by means of encapsulation in alginate with the addition of biochar, nanosilica, perlite or vermiculite was analysed in the study. The best effects of B. subtilis immobilization were obtained with alginate with 5 ml of biochar, P. fluorescens - with 25% (v/v) perlite and vermiculite, while A. brasilense - with 25% (v/v) alginate and 50% (v/v) perlite. The most effective immobilization of the bacterial consortium was achieved using alginate with addition of 50% (v/v) of biochar.
Najlepsze efekty immobilizacji B. subtilis uzyskano z zastosowaniem alginianu z dodatkiem 5 ml biowęgla, P. fluorescens z wykorzystaniem 25% (v/v) perlitu i wermikulitu, natomiast A. brasilense 25% (v/v) alginianu i 50% (v/v) perlitu. Najefektywniejszą immobilizację konsorcjum bakteryjnego uzyskano z wykorzystaniem alginianu z dodatkiem 50% (v/v) biowęgla.

Opis:
The study was conducted in the area of the impact of sulfur mine in Jeziórko. The aim of the study was to assess changes in pH, cation exchange capacity and content of available phosphorus, potassium and magnesium after 6 years of conducting remediation. In the experiment (plots with an area of 15 m2) degraded soil was rehabilitating by post-floating lime and compost from sewage sludge, sewage sludge and ash from combined heat and power (CHP). Composts at a dose of dry matter 180 t · ha-1 (6%), were determined in accordance with Minister of the Environment Regulation from 2001, applied the following options: control (only native soil limed), compost from municipal sewage sludge, sewage sludge compost (80%) and ash (20%), compost from sewage sludge (70%) and ash (30%). The reclaimed plots were sown with mixture of rehabilitation grass. Single de-acidification, land fertilization and a further 6-year extensive (without fertilization) use had a different influence on the properties of the native soilless substratum. Irrespective of the reclamation manner, after six years land use in the upper layers, observed increase in the average content of available phosphorus, available potassium content does not changed significantly but recorded a tenfold decrease in the content of available magnesium.
Badania prowadzono w obszarze oddziaływania kopalni siarki w Jeziórku. Celem badań była ocena zmian odczynu, pojemności sorpcyjnej i zawartości przyswajalnych form fosforu, potasu i magnezu po 6 latach od przeprowadzenia rekultywacji. W doświadczeniu (poletka o powierzchni 15 m2 ) przeprowadzono rekultywację zdegradowanego gruntu wapnem poflotacyjnym, oraz kompostami: z osadu ściekowego, osadu ściekowego i popiołu z elektrociepłowni. Komposty w dawce suchej masy 180 t · ha-1 (6%), ustalonej w oparciu o rozporządzenie MŚ z 2001 roku, zastosowano w wariantach: kontrola (grunt rodzimy tylko zwapnowany); kompost z komunalnego osadu ściekowego; kompost z osadu ściekowego (80%) i popiołu (20%); kompost z osadu ściekowego (70%) i popiołu (30%). Na zrekultywowanych poletkach zasiano mieszankę traw rekultywacyjnych. Jednorazowe odkwaszenie i nawożenie gruntu i dalsze 6-letnie ekstensywne (bez nawożenia) użytkowanie wywarły zróżnicowany wpływ na kształtowanie właściwości rodzimego utworu bezglebowego.

Opis:
The efficient use of water is increasingly important and proper soil management, within the specificities of each region of the country, allows achieving greater efficiency. The South and Caparaó regions of Espírito Santo, Brazil are characterized by relief of ‘hill seas’ with differences in the degree of pasture degradation due to sun exposure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the least limiting water range in Udox soil under degraded pastures with two faces of exposure to the sun and three pedoenvironments. In each pedoenvironment, namely Alegre, Celina, and Café, two areas were selected, one with exposure on the North/West face and the other on the South/East face. In each of these areas, undisturbed soil samples were collected at 0-10 cm depth to determine the least limiting water range. The exposed face of the pasture that received the highest solar incidence (North/West) presented the lowest values in least limiting water range. The least limiting water range proved to be a physical quality indicator for Udox soil under degraded pastures.

In the study, the content of heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn in the soils collected from various regions of the Lublin Voivodeship was examined. The examined soils were light medium soils. Content of individual elements was determined by the AAS method in the extracts of 1 M HCl. The analysed soils were poor in copper and manganese. Their concentration and the concentration of lead, cadmium and nickel was in the lower realms of the range natural for light soils formed from sands. Only the content of zinc was fairly high in the above soils, frequently as high as the first degree of contamination.

The paper characterises total concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn in the surface layers (0-20 cm) of agricultural soils in Poland (48620 soils samples) and Lublin region (3829 soil samples). The results for Lublin region are expressed in terms of the degree of metal pollution as compared to contamination in the rest of the country. The average concentration of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn (in mg kg-1 of soil) in the A horizon of agricultural soils in Poland and in Lublin region (values in parenthesis) are as follows: 0.21 (0.17); 6.5 (4.9); 6.2 (6.6); 13.6 (10.7); 32.4 (23.3). About 79% of the agricultural soils in Poland are characterised by a natural (0°) content of heavy metals while 17.6% contain elevated level (10) of these metals. In the Lublin region it is 91.9% and 6.7%, respectively. About 3% of the Polish soils (1.4% in the Lublin region) exhibit various degrees of contamination with heavy metals. This includes heavy (IV0) and very heavy pollution (V0) which is found in up to 0.4% of the agricultural land and up to 0.2% in the Lublin region.

Opis:
In the result of geomechanical transformations associated with the activity of open cast brown coal mining, some changes in air-water relations may occur on arable land adjacent to these regions usually referred to as hvdrological alterations. However, they do not always need to result in soil degradation, i.e. in the deterioration of their production potentials. This will often depend on the distance of fields from the workings, value of the arable land (soil quality class), type of water management, etc. On the basis of long-term studies carried out in the area of operation of two brown coal mines - KWB "Konin" and "Adamów" - on arable land and grasslands of over 60 villages on the total area of 30 thousand hectares it was possible to develop evaluation criteria for the extent of soil degradation and work out principles for compensation payments for farmers. Three zones and appropriate sub-zones of soil susceptibility to drainage were determined and clear and simple criteria for the estimation of the extent of arable land and grassland degradation were worked out. Furthermore, the authors proposed simple and readable systems to calculate compensatory payments to be paid to farmers taking into account the state of soil degradation, value of agricultural land (price of 1 ha of land of appropriate class) and the area of damaged land. The degree of soil degradation, both of arable land and grasslands, ranged from 10 to 30%. In the case of grasslands, additionally, an appropriate sum of money was allocated to compensate for sward recultivation.

Concentration and profile distribution of heavy metals was investigated as contamination indicators of the forest soils formed from glacial deposits of the South Podlasie Lowland. The study was carried out on thirteen soil profiles situated a hundred meters from the road. The highest content of heavy metals was found in the organic horizons of the investigated soils. The mean content of Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr in the investigated soils were: 556.7, 72.9,15.5, 63.5,13.8, 16.5 mg/kg d.m. of the soil, respectively. In the mineral-organic and mineral horizons of the investigated soils heavy metals were present in quantities which were close to natural. The podzol soils, podzols and rusty soils developed from sands contain less heavy metals than the soils lessivés, black earth and deluvial soil. The Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb distribution in the soil profiles is influenced by the soil forming processes. The distribution index of the examined metals distribution in the genetic horizons testify to it.

The alluvial soils in the Bóbr river valley, devastated by sand and gravel exploitation, were reclaimed for agricultural use. After reclamation treatment, the newly formed soil was very acid. Application of 5 Mg/ha lime elevated soil pH to 6-7, but during the following years, soil pH dropped again by about one half of the pH unit a year. Rapid drop in the pH level can result both from geological and soil-forming processes. Efficiency of mineral fertilizers applied in various combinations did not give the expected results and the yield of cultivated plants was not satisfactory. Mineral fertilization in various combinations did not result in the expected yield levels.

Research was carried out in 1998 on the area of 10 allotments situated within the limits of the city of Lublin. Representative soil samples, as well as samples of white cabbage and carrot roots were collected. Content of lead, zinc, and copper were analysed in the samples. On the basis of chemical analysis, it was observed that quantities of lead and zinc were usually higher than average in the same type soils in non-polluted areas. Copper content in the soil did not exceed the average values. The natural content of metals was usually not exceeded in plants. However, samples of white cabbage taken from the "Nasza Zdobycz" and "Sygnał" allotments, where the amount of lead was higher than I mg kg-1 of dry mass were an exception.

Studies on the possibilities of activating heavy metal ions by platinum ions in the soil have been undertaken. The present work gives results of research on the copper ions activated in loessial soil by the treatment with solutions containing platinum ions. Samples of podzolic soil developed from loess were collected from the horizon Ap (0-20 cm). The samples were treated with re-distilled water or with the same quantity of PtCl4 water solutions containing 2, 4, 20 mg of platinum ions. Soil reaction (pH) was measured after 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months of incubation at 5 and 20 °C temperature. Copper ion content was determined in the filtrates using the technique of atomic absorption spectrometry. The amount of copper ions activated in the soil material depended on the soil reaction, temperature, quantity of platinum ions introduced and the time duration of the experiment.

On the basis of results obtained in 2 static experiments conducted on light and heavy soils with differentiated mineral fertilisation, an approximate balance of Cd, Ni and Pb was determined over 20 years of investigations. The experiments included 3 levels of fertilisers and the control plot. Ammonium nitrate, single or triple superhosphate and potassium salt were used for the treatments. Average amounts ofheavy metals introduced with the fertilisers in both experiments over twenty years were as follows: 37-110 g Cd, 63-195 g Ni and 62-202 g Pb ha-1. The balance ofheavy metals over twenty years assumed different values depending on the fertilisation level and soil conditions. However, irrespective of those factors, the balance assumes a negative value. The effect of nitrogen doses on the balance was slight and depended on the site trophicity. On the other hand, increasing doses of phosphorus and potassium treatment decreased the value of the negative balance difference of cadmium and, to a lesser degree, of nickel, but increased the lead balance.

The effect of hard coal fly ash applied on surface of forested (formerly arable) rusty soil on chemical composition of soil surface horizons was evaluated in field experiments conducted between the years 1992-1995. The application of fly ash at the dose 15, 30, 60 and 120 t ha-1 on the soil surface caused a decrease of acidity of soil surface layer which was dependent on the fly ash rate. The deacidification of soil lasted only two years. The application of fly ash increased also the content of macro- and microelements in the soil as well as in Scotch pine needles.

The objective of the study was to evaluate zinc and lead contamination in the upper, organic layer of the soil around zinc and lead smelting plant KGH "Bolesław" in Bukowno near Olkusz. The study material were samples of the upper layer (0-5 cm) of the soil collected at the distance of 10, 25, 50, 100 150, 200, 250 m, and further from each of the 250 m up to 3 000 m sections in 8 directions: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW. The most contaminated soil samples were found at the distance of up to about 1 000 m from the subject plant. The most polluted is the NE and SW area. Pollution of the NE area is related to wind direction. The SW area could be a zinc and lead ore outcrop, or else, it was contaminated when used as a dumping ground for the waste from the plant in the past. Heavy pollution of this area with zinc and lead could cause serious damage to living organisms in the area close to the plant.

Influence of some selected heavy metals applied into soil as water salt solutions (2 mg Cd, 30 mg Cu, 15 mg Ni, 80 mg Pb and 70 mg Zn/kg soil d.m.) on the growth and development of broad beans and on occurrence of harmful and beneficial insects on the plant was investigated in field conditions. The applied doses of soil contamination with heavy metals strongly affected broad beans development. Plants were characterised by a significantly lower number and length of shoots and a lesser number of pods per plant as compared to the control. Chemical analysis of individual parts of plant revealed big differences in heavy metal contents in roots of plants in contaminated soil as compared to control soil with natural contents of metal ions. In the above ground parts, i.e. leaves and shoots the differences were considerably smaller. Numbers of beetroot aphids were determined on the selected plants since its appearance to the end of its development. Simultaneously, occupation of aphid colony by predators: ladybirds, Syrphidae and Chrysophidae larvae was also assessed. The number of plants occupied by aphids at each plot was also estimated. Aphids on plants in soil with increased metal contents formed more numerous colonies, also the insects invaded a bigger number of plants. Ladybird larvae, predators for aphids, occurred in more numerous colonies on plants in contaminated soil. The numbers of other aphid predators: Syrphidae and Chrysophidae larvae did not reveal statistically significant differences.

Opis:
The paper presents distribution of zinc, manganese and iron in fractions of soil treated with tannery sludge and compost of tannery sludge and peat, and, for the sake of comparison, the soil from a plot treated with farmyard manure (FYM), and mineral fertilisers. Total soil contents of zinc ranged from 38.0 to 47.3 mg kg-1 of soil. The share of mobile zinc forms ranged between 6.05-7.93%. Percentage of the exchangeable form was between 5.8-7.5% of the total Zn contents, while the share of forms bound with organic matter ranged between 10.7 and 12.7%. A considerable part of zinc was bound with manganese and iron oxides. Between 30.14- 43.72% of Zn were found in the residual form. Organic and mineral treatment influenced the share of easily soluble manganese compounds. It ranged between 15.6-19.7%. The least of manganese (1.0-2.0%) occurred in the compounds with crystalline iron oxides. The exchangeable form constituted between 3.4-4.2%, organic fraction accumulated slightly more. Manganese oxides retained the most of the element. Trace amounts of iron were revealed in the first three fractions. The biggest part of this metal was found in sparingly soluble compounds, mainly oxides (over 40%) and on residual fraction (over 30%).

In the present paper arable soils of the Upper Silesia were evaluated as to copper, zinc, manganese and iron contents, determined in the same extract, i.e. 1 M dm-3 HCl. The studies comprised 20 points in the vicinity of Sosnowiec and 20 points from near Zawiercie. Soil abundance in the available forms of microelements was assessed on the basis of the limiting numbers suggested by the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation. Soils of Zawiercie and Sosnowiec belonged to those with high contents of zinc in all the cases; in the majority of objects these were the soils with medium contents of copper and manganese. In half of the cases, the soils were classified as possessing low iron content, and in the remaining half as having medium iron content.

Opis:
The present paper reviews content and phytoavailability of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the soils of seven selected regions in the former Tarnów province, considered to be particularly endangered by contamination by these metals. One hundred soil samples were collected, 50 from the 0-10 cm layer and 50 from the 40-50 cm layer and mixed meadow sward from the same places. Most of the examined soil samples had a natural heavy metal content with the exception of a few samples containing higher amounts of Cd, Ni, and Zn. A strong correlation between heavy metal content and soil sorptive capacity and the organic matter content and the level of soil fraction with particle diameter of <0.02 and <0.002 mm was observed. Analysis of heavy metals in plants revealed that the limit values of Cd and Zn content were exceeded only occasionally together with reduced fodder quality of the investigated sward.

Opis:
The subject of the paper was to determine chromium and cadmium fractions in the soils treated with tannery organic materials. Methods, characteristics of experimental materials and the tested soils were presented in the first part of the paper. After four years of investigations soil samples were collected for the assessment of the total content of chromium and cadmium and their fractions. Results of a sequential chemical extraction confirmed literature data on the weak mobility of this metal in the soil. After application of the studied fertilisers, the share of the most mobile Cr fractions was slight. Iron oxides and residual fractions were most important for chromium accumulation. Cadmium mobility in the soil and its easy uptake by plants is related to a considerable share of mobile forms. A large share of mobile form was noticed in the analysed soils (54.5-68.3%). Exchangeable fraction bound smaller amounts of cadmium (6.8-13.2%). Similar amounts of cadmium were accumulated in the fractions bound to manganese oxides (8.5-19.6%). Organic matter did not contribute to this element binding and the amounts of cadmium stored in this fraction were 2.3-6.6%. Only very small amount of cadmium was accumulated in the form bound with the initial minerals.

Opis:
The present investigations aimed at determining the effect of various organic materials, i.e. farmyard manure (FYM), organic tannery sludge and compost of such sludge and peat on lead, copper and nickel fractions content in soil. Doses of peat compost and organic sludge were calculated according to the nitrogen amount per a FYM dose. After four years of experiment, fractions of Pb, Cu and Ni compounds were assessed in the soil from individual plots using the Zeien and Brummer's sequence chemical extraction method. Heavy metal contents were determined using a ICP-AES in JY 238 Ultrace apparatus. Lead accumulated mainly in the form bound with organic matter and with amorphic iron oxides. This metal distribution reveals its slight share in the mobile and exchangeable forms. Composts and sludge introduced into the soil did not affect any significant changes of the individual lead forms share as compared to FYM and NPK treated plots and the control. Some amount of copper occurred as mobile forms in all the soils. In the soil of all the treated plots, copper occurred mainly bound with organic matter and amorphic iron oxides. The basic share of nickel was found in the residual fraction bound with internal crystalline nets of initial elements. Beside the residual form, nickel was connected mainly with organic matter.

Trace elements contents analyses were made in tuber samples collected from the field experiment in 1996-1998 in Experimental Station, Parczew, on weak loamy sand soil. The following experimental factors were taken into account: their cultivation technologies; two potato varieties (Aster and Drop). The lead content in very early potato tubers appeared to be higher than the permissible one in all study years. The highest lead content was found in young tubers harvested on 60th day after setting. Along with the delay of harvest, the lead level tended to be lower. Tubers harvested on the 75th day after setting accumulated the most strontium, those physiologically matured had the lowest level of this element. All types of coverage applied in the study contributed to the increase of lead content in tubers of very early potato varieties as compared to traditional cultivation. Neither cultivation technologies nor variety features modified the strontium accumulation in tubers.

Research was carried out on the basis of investigations from the years 1996-1998 on the so-called monoliths in the soils derived from loess formations. Properties of those formations were differentiated by landscape and processes of water erosion. It was found out that post-sewage waters (waters received after sewage treatment) from a mechanical-biological sewage treatment plant have a more favourable influence on both the value of acidification indexes and relations between cations in the soils than solid mineral salts.

The author investigated a 0-3 cm layer of two forest brown soils: brown acid and brown leached. These forest soils were under handsome beech trees (Fagus sp.) between 100 and 120 years old. The author compared the chemical properties of the soils. The soil existing near the tree trunk (1 m2 of surface, strongly washed by rain water polluted by chemical substances) and the soil existing under the tree umbrella (40 m2 of surface in the area of the tree-tops, washed poorly by rain water). This comparison showed changes in these properties, dependent upon the degree of atmospheric contamination. It was found that, at the same level of atmospheric contamination, higher changes of properties were found in brown leached soil than in brown acid soil. Less acidified soils (with alkaline or neutral pH reaction) are more suitable in these researches. The investigations of the forest soil layer 0-3 cm (12 soil profiles) showed that changes in their chemical properties in relation to tree trunk-tree umbrella can be the basis of assessment of the degree of atmospheric contamination.

Research carried out on mineral soil with mechanically damaged upper layer proved greater variability of general aspect between species than between varieties within a species. Among the investigated species, the following had higher general aspect values during the whole research period: Festuca ovina, Festuca rubra, and Lolium perenne; while Agrostis capillaris and Agrostis canina had lower values. Significant differentiation of the general aspect evaluations were observed only in Festuca genera variations, whereas evaluations of the general aspect of variations within the rest of the species were close. Sowing time did not significantly affect di fferentiation in the evaluation of the general aspect of varieties in Agrostis, Poa, and Lolium genera. However, spring sowing positively affected the general aspect of the Festuca ovina varieties and the Terros variety (F. arundinacea).

The aim of the experiment was to compare the rehabilitating effect of three factors that may improve the degraded and very poor soils formed from loose sands: dolomite liming, use of a multi−component fertilizer with delayed action (Silvamix W) and temporary introduction of an admixture Alnus incana into the Pinus sylvestris plantation. The results of the factorial experiment after 9 years indicate that the soils on which the experiment was established cannot be afforested without prior rehabilitation treatments. The activity of dolomite was most effective while of Silvamix − weaker. Alder survived in the plantation composition only when used in combination with dolomite fertilization, then its rehabilitating effect was apparent. Rehabilitation relying on the use of dolomite at a rate of 2 t/ha in combination with a 50% admixture of alder in the pine plantation is recommended to be used in practice.

W doświadczeniu wykorzystano zdegradowaną glebę pochodzącą z terenu oddziaływania huty w Miasteczku Śląskim i komunalny osad ściekowy z oczyszczalni ścieków komunalnych w Pajęcznie w trzech proporcjach wagowych (10, 30 i 50%).
One of the most widespread form of soil degradation is the chemical contamination, which is generally seen in industrialized areas and can be manifested as heavy metals pollution. Soils degraded by the toxic emissions from non-ferrous foundries (rich of heavy metals) are very often deficient in organic compounds and suitable microflora because of limited soil's protective abilities in the presence of metallic elements contamination. That kind of soils is hard to revitalize without earlier improvement of soil matrix by specific substratum. Sludges from municipal waste water treatment plants (particularly from country-side ones) are rich in nutritive compounds which can be assimilated by plants. Because of that, sludges can be very effective soil-forming substrates in upper layers of inorganic ground where they can restore a biological activity which is proper for fertile soils. The paper presents the evaluation of municipal sewage sludge influence on selected physico-chemical and biological (bacteria and fungi constitute the most important part of the microflora present in soils) parameters of degraded soil after six months since the application. The investigated soil was taken from the area polluted by Miasteczko Slaskie zinc foundry, and municipal sewage sludge originated from waste water treatment plant in Pajeczno. Conducted analyses have shown improvement in the majority of studied parameters (fungi and actinomycetes population, pH, TEB, CEC, Kiejdahl's nitrogen and assimilable phosphorus). Applied sewage sludge caused improvement of sorption capacity (cation exchange capacity - CEC) which indicates amelioration of soil's fertility. Sludge used in experiment also indicates high enlargement of assimilable phosphorus in connection to appropriate carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N). The presented work has shown positive sewage sludge influence on organic matter mineralization processes which confirms the fact that this substratum can be effectively used in degraded soil reclamation e.g. in low cost soil cleaning procedures like phytoremediation.

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to assess differentiation in the total content of Cu, Zn and Mn under the influence of water erosion. The present author investigated parent material, eroded soils and delluvial sediments of a small arable-forest catchment of the moraine zone in West Pomerania. The average content of heavy metals in the parent rock (boulder light loam) were assumed as geochemical backgrounds of Cu, Zn and Mn. It was found out that erosion process caused differentiation in heavy metals. Zinc was the most mobile in this transportation; Mn was not sensitive to it. Delluvial sediments from arable (drainage) depressions had a clearly lower content of Cu and Zn than the parent material. It was also noted that Cu and Zn content in the forest area was lower than in the arable area of a similar relief and soil composition. Mn content was always higher in the arable soils. Soil-forming processes influenced differentiation of heavy metals in the vertical soil profile. The humus and Bt horizons (accumulation of silicate clay) were enriched with heavy metals. A decrease of heavy metal content was noticed in the eluvial horizon (Eet - outwash of silicate clay). The humus horizon of the investigated soil had, a natural (not increased) content of Cu, Zn and Mn.

The studies comprised 20 points localised in four communities of the Silesian province The aim of the investigations was to assess cadmium contents in soils, grain and straw of spring barley cultivated in the ecologically hazardous region and to describe relations between this metal contents in the soils and indicative parts of barley. It was found out that 27 of the examined soils were characterised by an increased cadmium contents, 69 of the soils were slightly contaminated and 8 of them showed medium contamination. In 42 grain samples of barley the permissible dose was exceed in the plants appropriated for consumption. A significant relationship was found between cadmium contents in the soils and their granulometric composition. Significant relationships were also registered between cadmium concentration in the soil and its contents in barley. Cadmium contents in grain was significantly correlated with organic carbon and clay fraction. However for straw, significant relations were found between cadmium contents and granulometric composition, reaction and organic matter contents.

The paper presents data on the annual rate of humus accumulation after 10 and 20 years of a strict experimental routine carried out on sterile waste dumps (anthropic protosol) from Cápuş, cultivated with maize, oat and esparcet. Basic dressing applied was the following: V1 - unfertilized, V2- 40 t/ha manure, V3 - 15 t/ha poultry manure, V4 - 40 t/ha manure + N100 P60 K40 , V5 - 15 t/ha poultry manure + N100 P60 K40 , V6 - N100 P60 K0 , V7 - N100 P60 K40, V8 - N200 P120 K80 , V9 - N300 P180 K120. The results obtained revealed that the variant with 40 t/ha manure + N100 P6O K40 (V4) after 10 years accumulated 1.724% humus and after 20 years 4.100% humus. It means that the annual average rate was 0.115% and 0.176%, respectively, at a depth of 0-20 cm. The next variant is the variant with 15 t/ha poultry manure + N100 P60 K40 (V5) where 1.207% of humus was accumulated after 10 years and 3.760% of humus after 20 years; the annual average rate 0.055% and 0.155%, respectively.

In the pot experiment the effects of contamination of diesel oil of proper brown soil developed from light loamy sand on microorganisms abundance and activity of soil enzymes were studied. Diesel oil was applied at the following rates: 0, 2, 4 and 6 cm3 kg-1 of the soil. Trial was performed in two experimental series: amended or not amended with straw. It was found that soil pollution with oil stimulated development of Azotohcicer sp., oligotrophia copiotrophic and ammonitiers bacteria; whereas inhibited fungi proliferation, dehydrogenases and urease activities and did not affect actinomycetes number. Diesel oil addition to the soil reduced positive effects of straw on microbiological and biochemical soil properties. Oil pollution adversely affected growth and development of triticale. Straw amendment diminished level of oil toxicity to triticale.

Opis:
A static field experiment carried out on lignite discard, manure and mineral fertilisers in the years 1994 to 1998 was used to study effects on yield and sonie soil chemical properties of the applied variants of organic and mineral fertilisation: NPK; manure 30 t/ha + NPK; lignite discard 90 t/ha; lignite discard 90 t/ha + NPK. The present results show that lignite discard contributed to an increase of yield production potential of a good rye complex soil and brought about a significant increase of the triticale grain yield in comparison with the object with manure. The level of mineral fertilisation applied in the entire crop rotation, in relation to various variants of organic fertilisation (which was applied 3, 2 and 1 year before the examination) exerted a positive effect on pH and the content of basic nutrients in the soil.

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of different use of a meadow on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in mineral soil. Studies were carried out in a long-term grassland experiment on black degraded soil in Laszczki (Masovian Province). Long-term nitrogen fertilisation with ammonium nitrate contributed more to soil acidification and increased DOC content than fertilisation with calcium nitrate Systematic mowing and leaving the meadow vegetation on the plots increased the content of biomass susceptible to degradation. This resulted in the increased DOC content in meadow soil.

The present research (1998-1999) was carried out to evaluate soil enzymatic activity in the deteriorated forest ecosystems within the operation range of the Puławy S.A. Nitrogen Factory. Investigation covered podzolic soils from strong and medium forest pollution zones. Objects from the Pulawy Forest Inspectoratejwere represented, i.e. samples from the Puławy district (Inspectorate Wronów) and Żyrzyn district (Inspectorate Zagórki). The obtained results indicate high degree of soil environment deterioration in the investigated forest habitats, in the form suppressed enzymatic activity and deformation of chemical properties. A significant increase in the enzymatic soil activity with the increasing distance from the nitrogen factory was observed. Changes in the activity of soil enzymes were related to the soil chemical properties.

Opis:
It has been believed that mining activities have always and exclusively caused large changes in the environment, including the impoverishment of plant cover, the animal world and the transformation of water resources. This makes that post-industrial areas (including post-mining and after-care) have been classified as degraded or even devastated. According to this approach a further use of these areas was not possible without reclamation and restoration or even creating a use value. In extreme cases, these were not the objective values of biological parameters, but the administrative and legal classification which determined the biological and natural environment. Effective methods of post-industrial area use as well as directions referring to this are extremely important because they can restore the new utility value to the area and they can enable the use of areas after the exploitation of mineral resources as unique plant habitats. Long-term reclamation activities limit the effects of global change mitigation. This article presents technical and agricultural aspects of the concept of reclamation and determine where its place in biological sciences is.

Wprowadzenie zagęszczonych osadów ściekowych do powierzchniowej warstwy popiołów paleniskowych wysypiska odpadów komunalnych poprawia ich właściwości fizyczne i chemiczne, oddziałuje glebotwórczo i stwarza warunki do rozwoju roślinności. Osady ściekowe oraz porastająca roślinność zainicjowały życie biologiczne w martwym bezglebowym podłożu wapna poflotacyjnego, składowisku popiołów paleniskowych i warstwie popiołów pokrywających wysypisko odpadów komunalnych, a powstała materia organiczna wytworzyła kompleks sorpcyjny, umożliwiający magazynowanie składników pokarmowych i wody.
The effect of municipal sewage sludge on initiation and intensity of soil-forming processes on the soil-less substrate of post-flotation lime and on storage yards of incineration ashes and dumps of waste materials covered by ashes, was studied as depended on the species of reclamation plants. It was stated that all doses of sewage sludge, introduced to the substrate of post-flotation lime, resulted in significant growth of organic matter content and increased content of assimilable P, K, Mg forms. In the substrate covered both, with the tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and Jeruzalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.), the soil-forming processes proceeded in similar way. Reclamation of incineration ash yards through the application of municipal sewage sludge and sowing gramineous plants, influenced lowering of substrate pH. Likewise, the increase of organic matter followed, what was conducive to beginning of humus formation in the upper layer of ashes and growing the contents of assimilable P, K, Mg nutrients. Introduction of concentrated sewage sludge into top layer of ashes recovering the dump of municipal waste, improves their physical and chemical properties; its soil-forming action offers the environment friendly conditions to plant vegetation growth and development. Sewage sludge, together with growing plant vegetation, initiated biological life on the life-less, soil-less substrate of post-flotation lime, on the layer of incineration ashes covering municipal waste site; created organic layer generated the sorption complex which enables storage of the nutrients and water.

Opis:
Zinc-lead waste dumps belong to the type of industrial waste areas which are unyielding to natural reclamation techniques. Heterogeneous composition of waste results in numerous complex physical and chemical processes causing serious air and water pollution in the surrounding areas. Moreover, industrial waste is characterized by high concentration of heavy metal compounds and other toxic substances which constantly affected all living organisms exposed to them. The present research shows the results of research aimed to establish degree of the sensitivity of Betula pendula seedlings to the adverse conditions of zinc-lead waste from the "Silesia Steelworks" in Katowice. Two kinds of substrate, i.e. slag and post-flotation waste was placed in pot cultures (17 cm in top diameter) and for each kind of waste a different soil variant was applied: (I) dump soil, (II) dump soil fertilized with NPK fertilizer, (III) dump soil covered with a 2.5 cm layer of garden soil, (IV) dump soil mixed with peat. In the experiment each variant of the soil type was used in 3 pots (repetitions). Additionally, pots with garden soil were used as control. Each pot received 25 seeds. The seeds of Betula pendula growing on smelter waste dumps had been collected in the vicinity of the dumps. At the end of the experiment, the seedlings were counted and the leaf colouring, height, root length of each seedling was measured. The results of the experiment showed that the most favourable soil type for Betula pendula seedlings were variants Nos (III) and (IV).
