Opis:
Investigations concerned the effect of raising the dose of new Z-ion zeolite substrate on cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) growth. During the pot experiment, plants were grown on degraded soil, arable soil and mixtures of degraded soil with increasing Z-ion substrate additions (1%, 2%, 5%, 10% v/v). When the experiment was terminated, the mean values of the vegetative parameters of test species were calculated. The carbon to nitrogen ratio for cocksfoot stem biomass was determined. The enzyme diversity of the degraded soil enriched with substrate additions after cocksfoot growth (Shannon’s diversity index) was also evaluated. The application of Z-ion additions positively influenced the cocksfoot growth – the additions in the range of 1–10% v/v to degraded soil significantly increased wet and dry stem biomass, dry root biomass and total dry biomass of plants. It turned out that the Z-ion substrate addition not exceeding 1% v/v can be considered as one which – after introducing into a specific degraded soil – would give similar biomass yield of cocksfoot to that obtained on the selected arable soil. At 1% substrate dose, the carbon/nitrogen ratio in the plant material (27.17) was within the range of values ensuring the proper methane fermentation course. The preliminary studies have shown that a significant increase in enzyme diversity can be observed when there is a certain degree of root development caused by a sufficiently high addition of Z-ion substrate to the degraded soil – under experimental conditions it was 5% v/v Z-ion dose.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to evaluate microbial functional diversity based on community level physiological profiling and b-glucosidase activity changes in soil degraded by sulphur mining and subjected to reclamation with various waste. The experiment was set up in the area of the former ‘Jeziórko’ Sulphur Mine (Poland), on a soilless substrate with a particle size distribution of slightly loamy sand. The experimental variants included the application of post-flotation lime, sewage sludge and mineral wool. The analyses of soil samples included the assessment of the following microbiological indices: b-glucosidase activity and functional diversity average well color development and richness). The results indicate that sewage sludge did not exert a significant impact on the functional diversity of microorganisms present in the reclaimed soil. In turn, the application of other types of waste contributed to a significant increase in the parameters of total metabolic activity and functional diversity of the reclaimed soil. However, the temporal analysis of the metabolic profile of soil microorganisms demonstrated that a single application of waste did not yield a durable, stable metabolic profile in the reclaimed soil. Still, there was an increase in β-glucosidase activity, especially in objects treated with sewage sludge.

This article shows the results assessment of the impact of various reclamation methods with the use of mineral wool and municipal sewage sludge on chemical and biological indicators, which have an impact on the improvement of the quality of soil degraded by sulfur well mining. The results of the research showed that the type of waste together with it application method, had a beneficial effect on the shaping of the chemical and biological properties of soil. The most favorable effect was noted in the conditions of combining mineral wool with sewage sludge. At this work we used the PHYTOTOXIKIT biological test, as an indicator of the ecotoxicological effect of selected waste added, for the efficiency of the soil remediation process.

Opis:
Soil degradation generates the need for reclamation measures. Bioaugmentation represents a promising method to treat degraded soils. The introduction of microorganisms into the soil often requires immobilisation. Porous media, such as biochar, have been used for the purpose. The introduction of individual bacteria into the soil requires the choice of a suitable medium to ensure high bacterial survival rate and effective bioaugmentation. The possibility of immobilization of Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azospirillum brasilense and a bacterial consortium by means of encapsulation in alginate with the addition of biochar, nanosilica, perlite or vermiculite was analysed in the study. The best effects of B. subtilis immobilization were obtained with alginate with 5 ml of biochar, P. fluorescens - with 25% (v/v) perlite and vermiculite, while A. brasilense - with 25% (v/v) alginate and 50% (v/v) perlite. The most effective immobilization of the bacterial consortium was achieved using alginate with addition of 50% (v/v) of biochar.
Najlepsze efekty immobilizacji B. subtilis uzyskano z zastosowaniem alginianu z dodatkiem 5 ml biowęgla, P. fluorescens z wykorzystaniem 25% (v/v) perlitu i wermikulitu, natomiast A. brasilense 25% (v/v) alginianu i 50% (v/v) perlitu. Najefektywniejszą immobilizację konsorcjum bakteryjnego uzyskano z wykorzystaniem alginianu z dodatkiem 50% (v/v) biowęgla.

Opis:
The study was conducted in the area of the impact of sulfur mine in Jeziórko. The aim of the study was to assess changes in pH, cation exchange capacity and content of available phosphorus, potassium and magnesium after 6 years of conducting remediation. In the experiment (plots with an area of 15 m2) degraded soil was rehabilitating by post-floating lime and compost from sewage sludge, sewage sludge and ash from combined heat and power (CHP). Composts at a dose of dry matter 180 t · ha-1 (6%), were determined in accordance with Minister of the Environment Regulation from 2001, applied the following options: control (only native soil limed), compost from municipal sewage sludge, sewage sludge compost (80%) and ash (20%), compost from sewage sludge (70%) and ash (30%). The reclaimed plots were sown with mixture of rehabilitation grass. Single de-acidification, land fertilization and a further 6-year extensive (without fertilization) use had a different influence on the properties of the native soilless substratum. Irrespective of the reclamation manner, after six years land use in the upper layers, observed increase in the average content of available phosphorus, available potassium content does not changed significantly but recorded a tenfold decrease in the content of available magnesium.
Badania prowadzono w obszarze oddziaływania kopalni siarki w Jeziórku. Celem badań była ocena zmian odczynu, pojemności sorpcyjnej i zawartości przyswajalnych form fosforu, potasu i magnezu po 6 latach od przeprowadzenia rekultywacji. W doświadczeniu (poletka o powierzchni 15 m2 ) przeprowadzono rekultywację zdegradowanego gruntu wapnem poflotacyjnym, oraz kompostami: z osadu ściekowego, osadu ściekowego i popiołu z elektrociepłowni. Komposty w dawce suchej masy 180 t · ha-1 (6%), ustalonej w oparciu o rozporządzenie MŚ z 2001 roku, zastosowano w wariantach: kontrola (grunt rodzimy tylko zwapnowany); kompost z komunalnego osadu ściekowego; kompost z osadu ściekowego (80%) i popiołu (20%); kompost z osadu ściekowego (70%) i popiołu (30%). Na zrekultywowanych poletkach zasiano mieszankę traw rekultywacyjnych. Jednorazowe odkwaszenie i nawożenie gruntu i dalsze 6-letnie ekstensywne (bez nawożenia) użytkowanie wywarły zróżnicowany wpływ na kształtowanie właściwości rodzimego utworu bezglebowego.

Opis:
The efficient use of water is increasingly important and proper soil management, within the specificities of each region of the country, allows achieving greater efficiency. The South and Caparaó regions of Espírito Santo, Brazil are characterized by relief of ‘hill seas’ with differences in the degree of pasture degradation due to sun exposure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the least limiting water range in Udox soil under degraded pastures with two faces of exposure to the sun and three pedoenvironments. In each pedoenvironment, namely Alegre, Celina, and Café, two areas were selected, one with exposure on the North/West face and the other on the South/East face. In each of these areas, undisturbed soil samples were collected at 0-10 cm depth to determine the least limiting water range. The exposed face of the pasture that received the highest solar incidence (North/West) presented the lowest values in least limiting water range. The least limiting water range proved to be a physical quality indicator for Udox soil under degraded pastures.

In the study, the content of heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn in the soils collected from various regions of the Lublin Voivodeship was examined. The examined soils were light medium soils. Content of individual elements was determined by the AAS method in the extracts of 1 M HCl. The analysed soils were poor in copper and manganese. Their concentration and the concentration of lead, cadmium and nickel was in the lower realms of the range natural for light soils formed from sands. Only the content of zinc was fairly high in the above soils, frequently as high as the first degree of contamination.

The paper characterises total concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn in the surface layers (0-20 cm) of agricultural soils in Poland (48620 soils samples) and Lublin region (3829 soil samples). The results for Lublin region are expressed in terms of the degree of metal pollution as compared to contamination in the rest of the country. The average concentration of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn (in mg kg-1 of soil) in the A horizon of agricultural soils in Poland and in Lublin region (values in parenthesis) are as follows: 0.21 (0.17); 6.5 (4.9); 6.2 (6.6); 13.6 (10.7); 32.4 (23.3). About 79% of the agricultural soils in Poland are characterised by a natural (0°) content of heavy metals while 17.6% contain elevated level (10) of these metals. In the Lublin region it is 91.9% and 6.7%, respectively. About 3% of the Polish soils (1.4% in the Lublin region) exhibit various degrees of contamination with heavy metals. This includes heavy (IV0) and very heavy pollution (V0) which is found in up to 0.4% of the agricultural land and up to 0.2% in the Lublin region.

Opis:
In the result of geomechanical transformations associated with the activity of open cast brown coal mining, some changes in air-water relations may occur on arable land adjacent to these regions usually referred to as hvdrological alterations. However, they do not always need to result in soil degradation, i.e. in the deterioration of their production potentials. This will often depend on the distance of fields from the workings, value of the arable land (soil quality class), type of water management, etc. On the basis of long-term studies carried out in the area of operation of two brown coal mines - KWB "Konin" and "Adamów" - on arable land and grasslands of over 60 villages on the total area of 30 thousand hectares it was possible to develop evaluation criteria for the extent of soil degradation and work out principles for compensation payments for farmers. Three zones and appropriate sub-zones of soil susceptibility to drainage were determined and clear and simple criteria for the estimation of the extent of arable land and grassland degradation were worked out. Furthermore, the authors proposed simple and readable systems to calculate compensatory payments to be paid to farmers taking into account the state of soil degradation, value of agricultural land (price of 1 ha of land of appropriate class) and the area of damaged land. The degree of soil degradation, both of arable land and grasslands, ranged from 10 to 30%. In the case of grasslands, additionally, an appropriate sum of money was allocated to compensate for sward recultivation.

Concentration and profile distribution of heavy metals was investigated as contamination indicators of the forest soils formed from glacial deposits of the South Podlasie Lowland. The study was carried out on thirteen soil profiles situated a hundred meters from the road. The highest content of heavy metals was found in the organic horizons of the investigated soils. The mean content of Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr in the investigated soils were: 556.7, 72.9,15.5, 63.5,13.8, 16.5 mg/kg d.m. of the soil, respectively. In the mineral-organic and mineral horizons of the investigated soils heavy metals were present in quantities which were close to natural. The podzol soils, podzols and rusty soils developed from sands contain less heavy metals than the soils lessivés, black earth and deluvial soil. The Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb distribution in the soil profiles is influenced by the soil forming processes. The distribution index of the examined metals distribution in the genetic horizons testify to it.

The alluvial soils in the Bóbr river valley, devastated by sand and gravel exploitation, were reclaimed for agricultural use. After reclamation treatment, the newly formed soil was very acid. Application of 5 Mg/ha lime elevated soil pH to 6-7, but during the following years, soil pH dropped again by about one half of the pH unit a year. Rapid drop in the pH level can result both from geological and soil-forming processes. Efficiency of mineral fertilizers applied in various combinations did not give the expected results and the yield of cultivated plants was not satisfactory. Mineral fertilization in various combinations did not result in the expected yield levels.

Research was carried out in 1998 on the area of 10 allotments situated within the limits of the city of Lublin. Representative soil samples, as well as samples of white cabbage and carrot roots were collected. Content of lead, zinc, and copper were analysed in the samples. On the basis of chemical analysis, it was observed that quantities of lead and zinc were usually higher than average in the same type soils in non-polluted areas. Copper content in the soil did not exceed the average values. The natural content of metals was usually not exceeded in plants. However, samples of white cabbage taken from the "Nasza Zdobycz" and "Sygnał" allotments, where the amount of lead was higher than I mg kg-1 of dry mass were an exception.
