Opis:
Mastitis is the most important disease of dairy cows, affecting the major economic losses of milk producers and the dairy industry around the world. In the work on the basis of data from the laboratory dairy plants analyzed the occurrence of microorganisms causing mastitis. Based on microbiological studies, 1462 milk samples taken from quarters of the cows' udders showed that the most common cause of inflammation was Streptococcus agalactiae, whose strains occurred in 27.77% of mastitis cows. In 18.13% of cows mastitis was caused by Staphylococcus aureus, 14.91% by Eschericha Coli, 8.55% by Streptococcus uberis, and 8.82% did not show bacterial growth during microbiological tests. In order to reduce the occurrence of mastitis, appropriate hygiene should be followed during milking of cows and, in the case of disease, cows udder milk should be tested to identify the microorganism causing inflammation and prepare appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Opis:
Udder inflammations are one of the most common diseases of high-yielding dairy cows that cause high economic losses and have negative influence on milk technological value. Nowadays, pathogens involved in the inflammation process present lower susceptibility to antibiotics and around 90% of mastitis cases is caused by environmental bacteria. This situation forces researchers for seeking new solutions in mastitis prevention and treatment. The aim of this paper was to describe bacteria, fungi and algae are most common reasons of mastitis in dairy cows.

Opis:
Copper deficiency is a common homeostatic disorder in dairy cattle farms in Poland. A simultaneous decrease in blood copper and iron concentrations is very rarely diagnosed and described in dairy cows. Copper is necessary for the mobilization of iron from the liver and its transport to bone marrow, where it is used for erythropoiesis. The aim of the study was to observe changes in haematological parameters in cows, resulting from copper deficiency or simultaneous deficiency of copper and iron, in comparison with animals from the same herds in which no deficiencies of these micronutrients were found. The study was conducted on 56 cows of the HF breed, aged from 3 to 6 years, from 3 dairy farms. The animals selected for the study were divided into three groups, two deficiency groups and one control group – without deficiency. Group I comprised animals with reduced concentration of copper in the serum, while group II comprised animals with low copper and iron concentrations. Group III comprised healthy cows without clinical symptoms and mineral deficiency. In both deficiency groups, the one characterized by a low concentration of copper, as well as the one with low concentrations of copper and iron, a reduction in red blood cell parameters, which was statistically significant versus the control group, was observed. In the examined animals, normocytic normochromic anaemia was found in group I, while normocytic hypochromic anaemia was diagnosed in group II. Cows with simultaneous Cu and Fe deficiency have worse milk yield results and they are more often culled from the herd. It is not clear why only some animals in a herd develop simultaneous deficiency of these micronutrients.

Opis:
Mastitis is an increasing problem in dairy farms and in the dairy industry. The paper presents changes in susceptibility of strains of bacteria isolated from quarter milk cows from mastitis in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 in the Factory Laboratory of Dairy Cooperative in south-eastern Poland. In total, 3409 strains of staphylococci, 2774 strains of streptococci and 423 strains of E. coli were isolated in these years. Susceptibility to antibiotics was examined by the disc diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton base. On the basis of the research it can be concluded that the highest sensitivity of staphylococci in all study periods is found for cefguin (from 91.2% to 96.1%) and cefapirin (92.2% to 96.2%), and the smallest for tetracycline (18 %), streptomycin (11.9%) and amoxicillin (9.3%). The highest sensitivity of bacteria from the Streptococcus family are cefapirin (97%), cefquinome (96.1%), amoxycycline (95.6%) and cefalexin (89.9%) on average in all years of research. The highest resistance was found for neomycin and streptomycin. They show that during the period under study over 90% of Escherichia coli were sensitive to streptomycin. Sensitivity at the level of 70%-80% was noted for amoxicillin, neomycin and cefapirin. The highest resistance of E. coli bacilli evolved for cefallaxin and tetracycline. Accordingly, early diagnosis of a pathogenic pathogen, and then selecting the appropriate form of treatment, gives you the opportunity to minimize the loss of mastitis in dairy cows.

This study aimed to identify bacterial pathogens in milk samples from dairy cows with subclinical and clinical mastitis as well as to assess the concentrations of oxidant-antioxidant parameters [malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), and total GSH levels] in both blood and milk samples. From a total of 200 dairy cows in 8 farms, 800 quarter milk samples obtained from each udder were tested in the laboratory for the presence of udder pathogens. Cultivated bacteria causing intramammary infection from milk samples were identified by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight (MALDI-TOF). In addition, from tested animals 60 cows were selected includıng 20 healthy cows that were CMT negative, 20 cows with subclinical mastitis (SM), and 20 cows with clinical mastitis (CM) for detection of MDA, GSH, and total GSH levels in blood and milk samples. Three hundred and eighty (47.5%; 380/800), 300 (37.5%; 300/800), and 120 (15%; 120/800) of milk samples, respectively were CMT positive or SM and CM, and those positives were cows from different farms. We observed that 87.4% (332/380), 25.3% (76/300), and 34.2% (41/120) of cows with CMT positive, CMT negative, and CM had bacterial growth. The most predominantly identified bacteria were Staphylococcus chromogenes (18.7%) obtained mainly from SM and Staphylococcus aureus (16.7%) as the most frequent cause of CM. According to our results, dairy cows with CM had the highest MDA levels, the lowest GSH, and total GSH levels in both blood and milk samples however, high MDA levels and low GSH levels in milk samples with SM were observed. Based on our results, lipid oxidant MDA and antioxidant GSH could be excellent biomarkers of cow’s milk for developing inflammation of the mammary gland. In addition, there was no link between nutrition and MDA and GSH levels.

Opis:
Neospora caninum is an important cause of abortion in dairy cattle. The general health of affected cows has not been investigated before. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to identify possible relationships between certain metabolic diseases and selected serum biochemical parameters in seropositive dairy cows against N. caninum antibodies in different stages of lactation. The study was carried out using 72 N. caninum seropositive cows and 61 seronegative dairy cows (control). Serum from all cows was tested to determine their N. caninum status (seropositive vs seronegative) using commercially available indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test kit (iELISA). In addition, serum biochemical parameters including beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), glucose, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, total protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) were determined using routine laboratory methods. The stage of lactation was obtained at the time of sampling from farm records. Student independent t-test showed that there was a significant difference in the serum concentrations of BHB, AST, ALT, and LDH between seropositive and seronegative cows. There was no significant association between seropositivity and the stage of lactation. However, multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that there was a strong association between seropositivity and BHB concentrations. Results of this study indicate a possible relationship between N. caninum seropositivity and certain metabolic diseases such as ketosis and fatty liver syndrome in dairy cows.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to compare the effect of parenteral and oral supplementation of Selenium (Se) and vitamin E (VTE) on selected antioxidant parameters in blood and colostrum as well as their effect on the incidence of mastitis in dairy cows during the final phase of gravidity (6 weeks) and first two weeks after calving. For the practical part of the study 36 dairy cows of Slovak pied breed in the second to fourth lactation-gestation cycle were selected. The animals weredivided into three groups: the control (C) and two experimental groups (D1 and D2). The selected groups were treated as follows: in group D1 products containing Se (Selevit inj.) and vitamin E (Erevit sol. inj.) were administered intramuscularly twice, six and three weeks prior to parturition; in group D2 a vitamin-minerals supplement in the form of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and dl-α-tocopherol acetate were supplemented orally for six weeks calving. The blood samples were collected from the vena jugularis in dairy cows approximately 42 days before calving (control sampling), on parturition day, and the 14th day after calving. Higher concentrations of Se and VTE were found in the blood plasma samples of both experimental groups collected on the day of parturition. In addition, the orally supplemented group (D2) showed higher Se and α-tocopherol concentrations in blood plasma on the14th day after calving as well a reduction of occurrence of mastitis by about 25 % compared to the control group. The relationship between inflammatory response and oxidative stress was also confirmed. The concentrations of milk malondialdehyde indicating lipid peroxidation during mastitis were significantly higher in milk samples from infected cows than in milk samples from healthy animals in each monitored group. In order to prevent oxidative stress and moderate inflammatory response in dairy cows it is very important to optimally balance their nutritive needs with an appropriate ratio of Se and VTE supplements. Therefore we still recommend supplementation of the cows’ postpartum dietwith 0.5 mg of Se/kg dry matter (DM) and 102 mg of dl-α-tocopherol acetate/kg DM to stabilize their optimal blood levels, stimulate the activity of glutathione peroxidase and reduce the incidence of mastitis.

The aim of the study was to use evolutionary operations (EVOP) to evaluate changes in the behaviour of dairy cows depending on the strategy according to which they were grouped after calving. The experiment was carried out on a Danish farm keeping about 200 Holstein cows. The farm had two separate areas for lactating cows: a small area with 54 waterbeds and a larger area with 133 beds with mattresses. During the experiment both areas were filled with cows. Cows after calving were introduced to either the small area (group) or the large area (group). After 14 days, the cows from the small group were transferred to the large group. The impact of different cow grouping strategies on their lying time, considered a welfare indicator, was examined. During the 210-day experiment, 195,703 observations were collected. The behavioural data were analysed using a linear mixed-effect regression model fitted by the maximum likelihood method. Days in milk, parity number, and lying time of herd mates were found to significantly affect the lying time of individual cows, while the strategy of cow grouping after calving had no effect on lying time.
