Opis:
The paper presents designing activities concerning the rating of the values of scalar quantities optimized in accordance with the accepted criteria in designing a condenser of marine steam turbine, which result from the forecasted characteristic, most frequently occurring set points of steam turbine power appearing during the operation of a sea ship. It refers to the method of designing heat exchangers contained in the paper [1] and to the issues raised in the publication [2]. The paper also presents exemplary computational results of the above-mentioned optimized scalar quantities, which refer to designing a shell and tube condenser of marine steam turbine. It was assumed in the paper that the values of mass the mass flow rate of the steam: one p m , 0.75 p m , 0.5 p m , which result from the assumed characteristic set points of marine steam turbine, which occur during the operation of a sea ship. Then, the selected designing activities referring to the above-mentioned optimization were exemplified. On the basis of the computational results, it was shown that the appropriate division of heat exchange area into the definite numbers of condensers, which results from the operation of steam turbine of a definite sea ship, increases operation effectiveness of these condensers in relation to one marine steam turbine condenser. This is a result of optimal values retention: velocity of cooling water of the definite condenser or condensers and temperature of this water on the output of this condenser or condensers during characteristic set points in the operation conditions defined in designing. Next, economic advantages were pointed out, which resulted from the described in the paper, technical solution. These advantages constitute the designing criterion that must be taken into consideration while making a decision about the division of heat exchange area into the definite number of condensers of marine steam turbine. Finally, the conclusions resulting from the paper’s contents are presented.

Opis:
The paper presents formulas which can be used to determine steam condensation pressure in a power plant condenser in off-design conditions. The mathematical model provided in the paper makes it possible to calculate the performance of the condenser in terms of condensing steam pressure, cooling water temperature at the condenser outlet, and condenser effectiveness under variable load conditions as a function of three input properties: the temperature and the mass flow rate of cooling water at the condenser inlet and the mass flow rate of steam. The mathematical model takes into account values of properties occurring in reference conditions but it contains no constant coefficients which would have to be established based on data from technical specifications of a condenser or measurement data. Since there are no such constant coefficients, the model of the steam condenser proposed in the paper is universally applicable. The proposed equations were checked against warranty measurements made in the condenser and measurement data gathered during the operation of a 200 MW steam power unit. Based on the analysis, a conclusion may be drawn that the proposed means of determining pressure in a condenser in off-design conditions reflects the condenser performance with sufficient accuracy. This model can be used in optimization and diagnostic analyses of the performance of a power generation unit.

Opis:
The losses in power plants condensers are some of the biggest losses in the entropy generation in whole power plant system. It is advisable to decrease the loss for improving the overall efficiency of the system. The article presents the condition for the minimum entropy generation, which states that the minimum is achieved when the heating of the water in the tubes of the condenser has a uniform distribution (takes the same value for all tubes). The correctness of this condition was verified on the basis of data obtained from the 2D condenser simulator for one of the national units with a 50 MW electric capacity. On the basis of the simulator increases temperatures and steam pressures corresponding to 30 tubes assesses the correctness of the construction of the condenser.

Opis:
Voltage flicker caused by the electric arc furnace (EAF) and the mitigation using the superconducting synchronous condenser (SuperVAR) by the American Superconductor Corp. are considered in this paper. The modeling of EAF, SuperVAR and the system used are discussed. Fast reactive power support to reduce voltage flicker problem by an EAF is desirable. The voltage fluctuation amplitude is used as an index to evaluate the effectiveness of SuperVAR for two different MVar levels. At the PCC (point of common coupling) bus, the application of the SuperVAR can improve the voltage flicker by 6% and 19% by applying DC1A type and AC4A type exciter to the SuperVAR. With an DC1A type exciter, the SuperVAR can output only between +1 and -2 MVAR and with an AC4A type exciter the SuperVAR can provide its full rated power (8MVAR) to the system, making the voltage flicker a less severe.

Opis:
The paper presents an analysis of relations describing entropy generation in a condenser of a steam unit. Connections between entropy generation, condenser ratio, and heat exchanger effectiveness, as well as relations implied by them are shown. Theoretical considerations allowed to determine limits of individual parameters which describe the condenser operation. Various relations for average temperature of the cold fluid were compared. All the proposed relations were verified against data obtained using a simulator and actual measurement data from a 200 MW unit condenser. Based on data from a simulator it was examined how the sum of entropy rates, steam condenser effectiveness, terminal temperature difference and condenser ratio vary with the change in the inlet cooling water temperature, mass flow rate of steam and the cooling water mass flow rate.

Opis:
KERENA is an innovative boiling water reactor concept equipped with several passive safety systems. For the experimental verification of performance of the systems and for codes validation, the Integral Test Stand Karlstein (INKA) was built in Karlstein, Germany. The emergency condenser (EC) system transfers heat from the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) to the core flooding pool in case of water level decrease in the RPV. EC is composed of a large number of slightly inclined tubes. During accident conditions, steam enters into the tubes and condenses due to the contact of the tubes with cold water at the secondary side. The condensed water flows then back to the RPV due to gravity. In this paper two approaches for modeling of condensation in slightly inclined tubes are compared and verified against experiments. The first approach is based on the flow regime map. Depending on the regime, heat transfer coefficient is calculated according to specific semi-empirical correlation. The second approach uses a general, fully-empirical correlation. The models are developed with utilization of the object-oriented Modelica language and the open-source OpenModelica environment. The results are compared with data obtained during a large scale integral test, simulating loss of coolant accident performed at Integral Test Stand Karlstein (INKA). The comparison shows a good agreement. Due to the modularity of models, both of them may be used in the future in systems incorporating condensation in horizontal or slightly inclined tubes. Depending on his preferences, the modeller may choose one-equation based approach or more sophisticated model composed of several exchangeable semi-empirical correlations.

The aim of the paper is to investigate the effectiveness of the 18K380 steam turbine condenser air extraction system using hydro ejectors. Motivation for the analysis was a need of improvement of the energy conversion ratio of the power plant. To achieve this goal it was necessary to establish efficiency of each subsystem of the energy cycle. The air extraction system is not a highly power consuming system but it has great impact on the steam cycle efficiency by influence on the condensation temperature. The air extraction system effectiveness depends on a weather conditions, exactly on the ambient temperature, which raises the question whether it is worth to modernize the hydro ejectors or replace them by a centrifugal vacuum pumps. To establish the vacuum system effectiveness a new innovative mass flow measuring system has been implemented to measure an air-steam mixture flow and the fraction of the air mass in the mixture. The measuring system is based on a Venturi nozzle supplemented with a temperature drop during the mixture expansion.
