John Paul II in his writings repeatedly pointed to the problems that affect both individual man and entire nations. The twentieth anniversary of Pope Paul VIʼs encyclical Populorum Progressio has become an opportunity for John Paul II to document the predicament of his predecessor to analyze the pains of the modern world. One of the most serious problems of world-wide perceived by the pope in the mid-eighties of the twentieth century in the encyclical Sollicitudo rei socialis was the so- Social question. The number of countries on the way of development far exceeded the number of developed countries, economic and cultural gap between the south and north so called. The south was still deepening. The key to resolving this global crisis is, according to John Paul II, the interpersonal and international solidarity. According to the Pope, only through mutual multidimensional and multifaceted assistance and cooper-ation is the integral development of every individual and the development of entire nations and states.

The subject of this article is the axiological basis of relations between morality and politics. The author shows anthropological and metaphysical origins of the idea of common good in social life. What role does morality play in political activity and where are moral foundations of a democratic state to be found? How to ensure the presence of moral values in public life (education, participation, common good, open society). The most important questions include: Who is responsible for ideas of democracy? Can democracy survive without a footing in pre–democratic values?

Opis:
The article seeks to understand how Augustine radically reformulated the political notion of the common good of classical antiquity, from a theological perspective. The main argument is that this reinterpretation follows naturally from the New Testament theology of the koinonia uniting the Church, as shown in the letter to Volusianus and Augustine's homilies on the Epistle to the Parthians. From this reading, it then becomes easier to understand the famous reformulation of the definition of society in books II and XIX of the City of God. We conclude by identifying the three themes that, from Augustine onwards, will be closely associated with the notion of the common good in the western political theology: 1) The common good is no longer a concept, but a Person and a Space: Christ in his humanity is the one and only Common Good of the human race. 2) The universal Common Good is eschatological; in history we can only speak of partial and imperfect common goods. 3) Charity is the driving force behind the dynamic fulfilling the universal Common Good in history.

Modern organisations that are the object of research on security sciences do not remain unchanged over time. However, there are continual categories such as the common good and trust. The security world is not about whether stakeholders are more or less willing to trust other people, but about whether members of the organisation rely on trust, creating interpersonal relationships, in their activities, building a culture of security. Then the common good becomes less exposed to the effect of the "tragedy of the commons". Building the trust can, therefore, mitigate this effect. This fact is facilitated by the use of cooperative leadership style, by shaping values, norms and patterns cultivating the concern for "common good". The development of this issue is the subject of this paper.

This paper is a review article based on the tradition of realistic philosophy. Its goal is to collect and organize information on two categories emerging in the field of humanistic research into environmental protection. It is about the concepts of “common good” and “integral ecology”, and the assessment of the relationship between them. Another concept analyzed in realistic philosophy is that of “nature”. The good was presented as a universal property of beings, including nature understood as a complex multiplicity of individual beings connected by mutual physical, chemical and biological relations. Nature is regarded as a common good, i.e., a property of all people which serves the development of every individual that makes up the human community. What combines the common good in the sense of classical philosophy with the integral ecology based on Christian doctrine is the guarantee of sustainability and the most equitable access to natural resources. The principle of “diversity in unity” inscribed in the common good is particularly consistent with the assumptions of integral ecology. The interpretation of the common good in the ecological dimension leads to the statement that nature management cannot be based on unlimited liberal freedom, but must be subordinated to minimizing social inequalities and improving the difficult situation of people and entire nations living in poverty and unworthy social or natural conditions. What is needed here is justice, the essence of which consists of the ideas of human dignity, equality, and proportionality in interpersonal relations. These are also common elements of the idea of “common good” and integral ecology.

One of the most important concepts of the axiological character used by the legislator is the concept of the common good. This axiology, however, does not deprive the common good of being a constitutional value for its normative content. Despite the fact it is not deprived of normative content, there are some difficulties in decoding it, which result from a large scope of generalization of the concept. Within the concept of the common good, we can distinguish security, which is of a social and public value, not just an individual one. Ensuring security presented as the mutual goal of the state and its authorities can therefore be seen through the lens of common good.

On account of differences in translation of canon 223 §2 into Polish and associated interpretation controversies, the article presents an interpretation of the canon based on its sources and an explanatory note issued by the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts. The Author demonstrates ambiguities which, in his opinion, are related to the narrowing of the meaning of the Latin word moderari and presentation of bonum commune as a general clause. Moreover, the postulate expressed in canon studies to include the last sentence of Dignitatis humanae 7 into the canon is upheld.

Opis:
The author draws attention to the consideration of the complexity of civil participation in deliberative democracy, indicating that the legislator assumed that dialogue is to be a way of existence, and thus the basis of any social situation in the state. State authorities appointed to serve the people and the common good have to ask citizens about their position in the case, not in order to obtain the desired response, thus emphasizing the departure from the monologue culture in favor of dialogue and communication with the public. The author claims that the normative foundations of the community state are linked by the conviction that public values and purposes are established in the communication process. In this approach, it is important to achieve public purposes and the quality of their achievement, its constructive features are: network, multi-level management, conciliation, participation. The basic mechanisms of action of this type of state are: deliberation, compromise and arrangements are made in the social networks – the dominant type of management of public affairs in this model is co-management. Solicitude of the state as a common good obliges not only a citizen, but means that a citizen has the right to expect that public authority will act so that the Republic of Poland can be considered a common good by citizens. Referring to literature, the author notes that deliberative democracy and its concept put more emphasis on the importance of conversation, discussion and debate on democratic practice than on the importance of voting. Its supporters argue that the debate improves the quality of collective decisions and increases the chances of their acceptance. Varieties of deliberative democracy range from accentuating local representation to reinforcing the debate within representative legislative bodies. The article points out the differences between discourse and deliberation. Moreover, the forms of civic participation and civic participation techniques used in Poland are presented. We have come to live in times when communication, both traditional and with the help of modern media, plays a significant role in shaping societies. It is important to understand the basic laws guiding communication, the ability to properly form interpersonal relationships, cognize the factors affecting the quality of messages transmitted, the technique of freedom of expression, the skill of persuasion and argumentation. The correct perception of the essence of dialogue in a deliberative democracy is its foundation, especially when it concerns institutions aimed at turning natural and legal persons to public decision-making process. Considering the literature, it was found that new participative solutions, primarily the ability to dialogue, could prevent a democratic deficit and also indicated that that civic participation impacts on the creation of deliberative democracy.

Politics can fulfill its mission only if it's work of building and improving the new world will be based on the strong foundations, which guarantee proper understanding of the good. It is a about human good, especially the common good. This common good deter¬mines the final justification of improving or building the world. These presented reflections focus on an issue of whether and how can this improvement of the temporal reality, be revived by the spirit of the Gospel? Good is the integral part of politics. Politics, according to its ethical approach, can be defined as a prudent concern for the common good. However, a Christian involved in politics should have an awa¬reness that the common good, a basic category of politics, is not confined to the temporal reality. It is as well transcendental, spi¬ritual and supernatural. It finds it's ultimate explanation in personal human good. The good of a human being is expressed by the quality of relationship between man and Creator, as well as in his vocation to the eternal happiness, and in his communion with the Triune God. Prudent concern for this good determines the most important sense of the politics conducted in a Christian spirit. It makes that involvement in the political sphere becomes a selfless service to the human being and society. In this perspective, as a matter of priority must be considered a necessity to properly discern the themes of Christian presence in politics. The criteria for political involvement of Christians are also important in this matter. The discernment of these criteria largely depends on the political sense, which as such, is shared by all people. These are the basic ideas presented in this article. Their objective is to identify the qualified nature as well as the necessity of politics conducted in a Christian way.

In the following paper the author presents and analyses J. Maritain’s social theory. The French Thomist attempted to associate the principle of common good (that plays the main role in the Christian social thought) with democracy. Maritain claims that only democracy can be regarded as an acceptable form of government, i.e. the one that satisfies rational and moral requirements (which, according to the Thomists, are the same). Such a statement put forward by the Thomist philosopher emphasises the necessity of asking a number of questions of the human nature, human dignity and human autonomy; it also demonstrate how to introduce the ethical values into the realm of democratic politics, which in its turn is described as axiologically neutral by contemporary political theories. J. Maritain’s views on those issues were taken into consideration by Catholic intellectuals and were announced before the Second Vatican Council. Regarding the time they were widely opened to the contemporary ideas. Consequently, they contributed to the significant development of the current attitude of the Catholic Church to the present political and social problems.

Philosophical anthropology claims that every human being necessarily operates in specific communities. These communities must also be based on certain ethical principles. One of the principles forming this ethical foundation is the principle of social justice. The Polish Constitution of 1997 does not contain any legal definition of this principle and the doctrine has problems with defining it as well. In this connection, the Catholic Social Teaching, which combines the principle of social justice with human dignity, the common good, equality and solidarity, can be an important interpretative support.

Crisis, sometimes associated with historically distant times or centrally planned economies, has turned out to be one of the main contemporary issues. Hence different systems like socialism and capitalism become similar in their inability to reply to expectations for a safe, peaceful and abundant life. It means that economic problems are more complex in their nature. Thorough analysis of the roots of different crises should therefore reach deeper than just economic explanations. This is the point where ethical and cultural explanations may be useful because they strive to explore the socio-cultural fabric at its foundations in the hierarchy of values and vision of human beings and society. When it comes to contemporary crisis the problem is twofold: firstly, there is the threat that the crisis will be treated inadequately and not realistically in consequence. Secondly, the roots ofthe crisis may not be diagnosed properly, which may lead to false ‘treatment’. This article is an attempt to highlight the above issues and analyse them in the context ofthe common good approach, which seems to offer valuable potential to understand the difficulties properly and offer a reasonable plan for recovery.

Cooperation between inhabitants results in the development of urban communities and creation of urban common goods, offering specific types of benefits, such as collective benefits. The purpose of this article is to define and establish the concept of collective benefits substantively among the achievements of urban economy. It has to be stressed that economic relationships which arise in the processes of integrating city users deserve special attention, because the relationships connecting them contribute to the development of unique conditions for living and conducting business. The individual sections of the paper provide an analysis of such inclusive values as dignity, freedom, equality, common good and social solidarity which are assumed to be the basis for all inclusive actions performed within civil societies in democratic states based on the rule of law. The analysis also considers a possible hierarchy of those values and how they affect each other. While the inclusive values themselves appear to be universal, their relations and influence on each other (possibly: hierarchy) is strictly dependent on the national legislation. The research has shown the way in which the investigated values/principles coexist. Human dignity has been found to be the fundamental and supreme value of the Polish legal system, while social solidarity supports social cohesion. It is not possible to artificially separate those values – only when they intertwine, complete and enhance each other can the inclusive actions be designed and executed in the most advantageous manner. Therefore, values and rules which bear them form a praxeological system; they must be interpreted only within the context of their coexistence, relations and the influence they have on one another. Each of the discussed values takes part in the establishment of the resources shared by a democratic state and by the internal structures of the civil society existing within this state’s bounds. Only by taking them all into consideration can we provide an adequate and comprehensive understanding of inclusivity and achieve its desired model.

Beck, a member of the Göttingen-Munich phenomenological circle and direct disciple of Alexander Pfänder, defends an acute realism with respect to both physical things and human psychism. The first section analyses consciousness and freedom as features of moral personality. Consciousness is not merely intentional direction to objects but also immediate apprehension of them, whereas the I means the individual enclosed in itself. Analogously, the will can open itself to reality in its concretion through love or it can engage solely in the search for selfish ends. All moral fulfilment reaches this crossroad proper to a realist anthropology. The second section presents an analogous disjunctive in the political sphere: either the democratic will which is guided by the common good or the isolation fostered in the XX century by nationalisms and by the colectiviste State. Choosing the former entails discarding all psychologist (like in Nietzsche) and socioeconomic (proper to Marxism) reductionism and respecting the intrinsic dignity of the person.

Love of neighbor originates in a rightly ordered love of self; though it appears contradictory at first blush, this relationship of the two loves underlies the Christian understanding of love. In order to get a clearer picture, we must examine the notion of the common good. The common good holds a prominent place within the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas and illuminates the relationship of self-love and love of neighbor. Modern Catholic philosophy has often struggled with how the common good should be interpreted, with personalists in particular coming under fire. Looking at the monastic life described by St. Aelred of Rievaulx we can glean some insight into how we might embrace a personalist understanding of the common good.

The subject of social justice are groups or whole societies – also states, object of this justice are their mutual rights and common good. The process of economic and technological globalization means among other things: establishment of the world market, predominant role of international companies, centralization of leading elites’ decisions, financial disproportion between individual people and countries. In the teaching of contemporary popes (John XXIII’s, Paul VI’s, John Paul II’s) the idea of social justice has also international dimension and therefore process of economic globalization ought to respect two principles of the Church’s social teaching: the principle of the subsidiarity and the principle of solidarity. The principle of the subsidiarity demands to respect subjectivity of all nations and states as well as to aid their integral development. The principle of solidarity postulates creation of common good of world society, this good are: peace, economic prosperity, commerce profitable for all states, cooperation and financial help of rich countries for underdeveloped countries. The social justice in the international dimension is the expression and the imperative of solidarity of all nations and states.

Thanks to this ability as one person is able to create community with others and the community, which still has a deeper family character . It is based on mutual love: human, but also the love of God. Love is the principle strength and double-family community, it is born of the marriage indissoluble unity and brotherly love to the wider community. Love and its preservation is the structure of the community of persons and therefore the life of the spouses and family members should be constantly trying to expressions of love such as respect, forgiveness and mutual giving and receiving all the family members of the community.

Opis:
Defining politics as prudent implementation of the common good has a long tradition. This is the spirit in which politics was understood by Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics and – later on – by the great Christian thinkers with Augustine and Thomas Aquinas as the most prominent examples. It was them that Father Professor Mieczysław Albert Krąpiec referred to in his dissertations on politics. His viewpoint on politics is marked by two elements. First, it is seeing the common good as the personal development of a human being. Only when understood this way, may the common good be real good for each individual person and at the same time – real good for the entire community. Second, it is acknowledging that the method of implementing the common good must be determined by the virtue of prudence. For it is prudence, including “past experience, the skill of reading and understanding the present in the context of other people and consideration for the consequences of one’s intended actions”, that enables one to choose such methods of organizing the social, economic and cultural life as well as any other public sphere, which will actually facilitate the self-improvement of a human being.

The main purpose of this article is to discuss the relation between the understanding of human being and the concept of common good. On the one hand, materialist and spriritualist concepts of man lead to the univocal understanding of bonum commune, on the other hand, dualist anthropology entails a breakdown of the unity of common good. The author reveals weak points of these approaches and undertakes an attempt of examining realist vision of man and its impact on the notion of bonum commune. He starts with analyzing the complex structure of human being, which includes the potential and actual nature of human person. Against the background of the personalist anthropology, the author concludes that the common good has not only a material or instrumental, but above all a personal dimension, which makes this good both common and non-antagonistic.

Opis:
Profit is a crucial quality pertaining to the economy in its broader meaning. Growing one’s wealth is an activity of a man who, due to his/her natural characteristics, is obliged to evaluate his/her moral conduct in the light of ethical principles and taking into consideration those ideals which, in a way, make up the purpose of any human action. Christianity offers a certain system of values and principles which allow us to pass a moral judgment on the economic aspect of the human life. The analysis of the profit based on Scriptural facts need to point at the value of labour and the idea of private property. The inspired writers emphasise the centrality of the human being in their account of the material aspect of the created reality. Therefore, every profitable activity ought to be subordinated to the well-being of the person. These economic systems which put in question the fundamental value of human dignity or absolutise the material side of things need to be, according to the Bible, deemed unjust or even fatal for all the human kind. On the basis of the revealed truth and taking into account the social encyclical letter of Pope Benedict XVI Caritas in veritate three criteria of the contemporary moral reflection on profit-making may be pointed out, namely personalising of the aspects of profit-making activity, enabling the wealth to produce social benefits it is bound to bring forth and referring to the common good. The positive evaluation of profit-making in the perspective of these principles makes it possible for the profitable activity to contribute to the genuine growth of every member of the community along with the whole of the society.
