The article discusses the transformation of the oligarchic capitalist system formed after the Soviet Union collapse towards the state-clan capitalism. This process began after the resignation of Boris Yeltsin from the post of the President of the Russian Federation and it continues to the present day. The oligarchs have lost their influence on decisions in the country, and the control of the state authorities has been significantly expanded. This text is a recapitulation of causes and consequences of the events occurring between 2000 and 2012.

The article introduces the reader to the „age of surveillance capitalism” by showing how Internet giants push users in specific directions by manipulating information and collecting data in order to get rich and gain power. The aim is to discuss this issue and show how human experience and preferences become a free raw material for corporations. The analysis includes a description of the threats to humanity and democracy and highlights the fact that the line between our free choice and manipulation is blurring, thus raising issues of security and sovereignty. The public does not realize that a displayed picture of dinner on Instagram is a certain data sold to business customers. This text is meant to make us reflect on our choices and behaviors and whether we still have the ability to return from where we are and, most importantly, whether we ourselves want that change.

Opis:
The main aim of the article is to present a long-term perspective in comparing American and European capitalism. While for decades, the US economic and business system has been considered a model, in recent times many elements suggest that it is losing most of the factors of its attractiveness. The economic and financial crisis, the end of American «exceptionalism», the increasing interdependency with the globalization process are depicting a world where a convergence process among different models is emerging, but without eliminating national economic and business cultures.

Usually, current financial crisis of 2008 is compared to the Great Depression of 1929. But there are some evidence that our current financial crisis has much more similarities and analogies to the crisis initiated by the panic in 1907. A brief analysis of both crises is presented. This analysis is conducted on the basis of the history of the United States of America, where both mentioned crises were initiated. However, we will search for the answer to the basic question, namely: how events in the early twentieth century shaped the history of the economies in the next hundred years, and how expected changes in the institutional arrangements after 2008 may be comparable to the revolutionary changes of the social order after 1907 (e.g., appearance of the FEDeral Reserve System in 1913, the adoption of the 16th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, enabling the collection of taxes on personal income, growth and omnipotence of government agencies)?

The paper concentrates on the issues of interest representation for non-standard employees. The empirical findings from the European Union (EU) level are used as a frame of reference for analysis of the situation in Poland. Nonstandard employment is an ambiguous notion, so is, naturally, the concept of non-standard workers. In Poland nonstandard employment has been growing, mostly in a form of 'junk jobs'. Trade unions, and other institutional forms of collective interest representation, struggle to endorse problems faced by non-standard employees, with a moderate degree of success.

As the title suggests, this article characterizes the systemic transformation of the Polish economy from the perspective of the institutional diversity of capitalism (i.e., Varieties of Capitalism). It synthetically presents the main objectives of the transformation, the most commonly discussed typologies of capitalism, and their application in Poland and the European post-communist countries. In this theoretical context the Polish economy is examined using a variety of criteria and typologies of capitalism (liberal, coordination, dependent, hybrid etc.). The article also lists the cognitive strengths and limitations of such a perspective analysis of the emerging economic model in Poland and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe

The article is dedicated to the issue of magic and religion in the social reality of capitalism. The goal of the article is to present  examples proving that capitalism in various places (post-communist Central Europe, San Cristobal in the Mexican state of Chiapas, Colombian department Valle del Cauca, New York) and at various times (from the 1970s to the second decade of the 21st century) was associated with elements of religion and magic through social thinking and practice, and therefore elements of social reality. On the other hand, in the discourse, capitalism is often presented as a part of nature: the existence that acts objectively, like the laws of physics. In the article, this apparent contradiction is presented as a dialectical aspect of the present day, in which the discourse and social reality are complementary.

In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis of the models of capitalism prevailing in the CEE11 countries. Our overriding aim is to find out how similar or dissimilar are these countries to each of the four models of European capitalism singled out by Amable. We compare 11 sample countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia) with their peers representing the Anglo-Saxon model (UK), the Continental European model (Germany), Scandinavian model (Sweden), and Mediterranean model (Italy or Spain). Our comparison focuses on six institutional areas: product market competition, labor market and industrial relations, financial system, social protection, knowledge sector, and the housing market, thus extending the original approach adopted by Amable (adding the housing market). We apply our own original methodology based on hexagons. We compare each of the six domains in the CEE11 countries with the reference Western economies using six indicators that best identify the institutional characteristics of a given domain (three indicators represent input variables or the institutional architecture, and three others - output variables or performance of an institutional area). We calculate the ranks of similarity of each indicator for a CEE country to the same indicator for the reference economies. The results of our study show that the CEE11 countries overall (and Poland in particular) exhibit the greatest resemblance to the Mediterranean model of capitalism, while they are the most dissimilar to the Scandinavian model. However, their similarity to the Mediterranean model is strongly determined by output variables or economic performance - in terms of institutional architecture or input variables alone the CEE11 countries are most akin to the Continental European model of capitalism.

Society is explored with the help of various approaches and methods that allow us to analyze the economy, politics, culture and society. Society as a socio-economic system can be effectively studied from the standpoint of the socio-economic approach, which is implemented within the framework of the formational approach. It was formerly used e.g. by Daniel Bell, John Kenneth Galbraith, Karl Marx, Leonid Weger, Yoshihiro Francis Fukuyama, Erik Olin Wright, and Immanuel Maurice Wallerstein. Formational approach allows us to analyze the global social and economic systems of the 20th century: capitalism and socialism. From the standpoint of this approach, the main difference between capitalism and socialism is the presence or absence of private ownership of the means of production. This feature has an impact on all aspects of social life in these systems. During the existence of these global systems, we have accumulated a rich experience of development in all areas of social life, which is analyzed in this article. The proposed article considers the positive and negative aspects of the development of capitalism and socialism. The directions of development of social and economic systems towards new form of capitalism are described and analyzed.
Podejście formacyjne pozwala analizować globalne systemy społeczne i gospodarcze XX wieku: kapitalizm i socjalizm. Proponowany tekst uwzględnia pozytywne i negatywne aspekty rozwoju kapitalizmu i socjalizmu. W tekście opisano i przeanalizowano kierunki rozwoju systemów społecznych i gospodarczych w kierunku postkapitalizmu.

Opis:
It is the individualistic approach which prevails in previous analysis of the problem of ethics in economy. The problem of the ethical attitude concerns individuals, business people, managers, politicians and economists. The publications about business ethics lack analysis of system circumstances in which individuals and companies act. If capitalism is just the power of capital owners over workers and if, according to Schumpeter, it is “the civilization of inequality and of the family fortune”, than it can be easily judged as a system of predominantly unethical tendencies. Nevertheless, it is worth raising questions about ethical character of various types of capitalism. Participation capitalism is one which ensures (nearly) full employment, a social minimum wage for everyone and the real power of society including workers’ participation in decision processes. The structural conditions of such capitalism force and even encourage ethical behaviour. The capitalism of the protective state was founded by J.M. Keynes, W. Beveridge and Will Hutton with his stakeholder capitalism. Many European countries approach this standard of capitalism. Predacious capitalism (turbo-capitalism) is a maximum-profit-oriented capitalism with no regard to social costs. The nearest example is the post-Reagan American capitalism. Polish capitalism fails to pass muster even in regard to the liberal capitalism.

This research paper deals with welfare work in four at the time industrializing countries, Great Britain, the USA, Germany and France, in the half century of flowering enlightened paternalistic capitalism between 1880 and 1930. Welfare work in this context is defined as, sometimes overly, paternalistic labour policy of enlightened entrepreneurs often encompassing workmans housing programs, pensions, saving programs, educational programs, sports facilities, medical services, worker participation, generous remuneration forms, and shorter working times. The question is raised if nowadays flex-capitalism in the context of shrinking collective welfare states can learn lessons from past experience with welfare work. By redefining paternalistic welfare work in adapted modernistic terms as well as by reweighting company, personal and state responsibilities a new future-proof trade-off as regards welfare work might be realised.

One of the main problems of the European culture is to answer the question connected with relations between capitalism, democracy and the world of values. In the modern world, an autonomous and independent individual, as a participant of the exchange and the market, becomes a source of values. As J. Locke and A. Smith state this does not mean that there are no values in the world we live in. The same thought demonstrates M. Novak, thus this is the spirit of the democratic capitalism.

Opis:
This paper acquainted readers with the concept of turbo-capitalism as a form of capitalism. The person who precisely defi ne this is Edward Luttwak, term of turbo-capitalism through free markets, privatization, globalization and deregulation. The paper set the basic differences between capitalism and turbo-capitalism. Economic stability and job security is for the individual “better tomorrow”. The development of technology and faster flow of information should promote economic development and economic progress of modern states. I would like to draw. the attention on the fact that turbo-capitalism is focused on maximizing profits, which does not solve social problems. National governments are losing economic strenght and, consequently, reduces social welfare and does not prevent crime and terrorism. Multiplication of turbo-capitalism profits leads to the increase of unemployment and therefore social pathology. This paper shows that the wellbeing, which is the main objective of turbo-capitalism, could not be the main goal of politics and society as it improves the material status of a few individuals, while it does not bring happiness to the majority. My work in this area is a “voice” of the wise limitations of turbo-capitalism, because this process uncontrolled can lead to the destruction of mankind. I tried to show that turbo-capitalism is the greatest threat to democracy. Capitalism could not focus on the individual, because it leads to “loneliness” of people in a wide range. In my work I have acquainted the reader with the situation created in Bhutan, during the inventions of civilization. I had presented in this work opportunities for Third World countries through the free movement of capital, modern technologies and investments. The reader has to understand, however, that the information revolution brings very big threat to humanity. The Industrial Revolution leads t o rapid growth in employment and decline of information technology indicators at one time. The reader should learn from the negative effects of the American turbo-capitalism and help to develop positive qualities.

In this sense, three main axes are articulated in this text: the institution of the common, neoliberal rationality and the problem of governmentality.

The ecumenical movement stressed the need for social commitment from the very beginning. In the last decade, this has been reflected in the harsh criticism of the capitalist social order. The article discusses selected critical ecumenical interpretations of capitalism: the Accra Confession by the World Communion of Reformed Churches (2004), the economy of life programme by the World Council of Churches, and the ecumenical project of radicalizing Reformation (2014). It aims to demonstrate convergences in the theological and philosophical assumptions of the approaches discussed. It also asks the question about the similarities between the presented ecumenical reflections and the teaching of Pope Francis.

Most theories of nationalism labelled as ‘modernist’ tend to overlook the fact that the phenomenon to which they vaguely refer as ‘Modernity’ is defined by a single, very precise and consistent socio-economic system, that of capitalism. However, this fact makes nationalism and capitalism, rather than nationalism and ‘Modernity’, practically congruent. From this perspective, the essential question that arises is whether the emergence of these two was a spontaneous but compatible and useful coincidence, or nationalism was capitalism’s deliberate invention? In the capitalist era, society has become merely a resource whose existence enables functioning of the market. Such a society must destroy all traditional communal ties on which the maintenance of traditional society was based, so that the principles of reciprocity and solidarity be replaced by the procedures of asymmetric economic exchange. Once the procedures of asymmetric economic exchange become the central principle of human relations, society stops functioning as a whole and becomes sharply divided into two parts – a well-organised and tightly-structured network of self-interested individuals permanently striving for perpetual economic gain and a shapeless mob of socially dislodged labour permanently striving for mere survival. The incessant widening of the gap between the two strata makes capitalism’s essential principle of endless accumulation of capital socially unsustainable. For, rapidly urbanised masses, forced into selling their labour below the minimal price, contain a permanently present insurrectionary potential that might threaten stability of the entire system. So, bridging that gap without actually changing the structure of society becomes the paramount task for the system trying to preserve its mechanism of incessant exploitation of labour and limitless accumulation of capital. Therefore, the system has to introduce a social glue that is tailored to conceal, but also to cement, the actual polarisation of society. At the same time, this glue is designed to compensate the uprooted masses for the loss of their authentic identities by replacing these with a single artificial one. This multi-purpose invention is an abstract concept of absolute social unity, named “the nation”, based on the assumption that those who are located on both sides of the gap, no matter whether they are on the exploiting or exploited side, automatically share the same equal rights, same common interests, and same identity.

Ulrich Beck is a famous German sociologist who has examined the concepts of risk society and the second modernity. Both terms were described by Beck as opposite to industrial society and class society. Recently, Dean Curran has attempted to overcome this opposition, and reconcile hermeneutics of classes and the risk society. This article examines the exchange of arguments between Ulrich Beck and Dean Curran and treats this exchange as a pretext to systematically identify those parts of the theory of risk society that cannot be reconciled with class theory. We examine how Marxian and Weberian theories of classes can effectively explain the phenomenon of second modernity.

Opis:
The Transformation of Economic Imagery in Croatian Culture in the 1990sThe article problematizes the relationship between culture and capitalism in creating a specific economic imagery of the 1990s in the Croatian cultural space as part of the post-Yugoslav context. One of the assumptions in analysing the connection between economics, culture and literature is that different political and economic systems (such as socialism or capitalism) always represent a certain type of culture. It is necessary to have a certain type of culture that will introduce and legitimize certain political and economic systems, which inevitably means that at the same time, certain types of cultural practices will also appear that will challenge and question them. The analysis detects processes of intellectual dismantling and transformation of socialism and creating the foundation for a new "moral and affective economy" (Ahmed, Bowles) of capitalism on post-socialist terrain. The author focuses on three "cultural patterns" (Williams) from the sphere of consumer culture, everyday life, scientific, artistic and cultural literature, through which she follows symptomatic traces of creating, negotiating and opposing the hegemonic culture in early 1990s Croatia. Transformacija ekonomskog imaginarija u hrvatskoj kulturi 90-ih godina 20. stoljeća Članak problematizira odnos kulture i kapitalizma u kreiranju specifičnog ekonomskog imaginarija devedesetih godina u hrvatskom kulturnom prostoru kao dijelu postjugoslavenskog prostora.

In my paper I undertake the issue of alienation, that appears at the same sources of modern thought and develops according to the growing consciousness of its conditions and consequences. The first articulation of the phenomenon of alienation we can find in the works of Jean Jacques Rousseau, but its conceptual expression was formulated in the philosophy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. The progress of discourse of alienation in the analyses of Ludwig Feuerbach, Karl Marx and the members of Frankfurt School reveals its essence that depends on the elimination of the personal status of individual. The attempts of overcoming the phenomenon of alienation undertaken by mentioned thinkers leaves the problem unresolved, because of the distinctive feature of all these attempts is mediation the conceptions of human being in limited perspective (concerning individual as mere exemplar of species or as a passive result of an external conditions).

Purpose: Stakeholder capitalism is a system in which organisations seek long-term value creation by considering all stakeholdersʼ needs. The paper aims to identify how stakeholder capitalism has become embedded in sustainability reporting over time and explore how it currently affects the standardisation of the ESG disclosure framework. Methodology/approach: The study reviews the essential works and research studies published over the last six decades that reflect the emergence or the revival of the stakeholder capitalism concept. The paper also analyses the complex environment of accounting standard-setters and regulators who promote various non-financial reporting frameworks or standards. Findings: The system of stakeholder capitalism may propel the harmonisation of sustainability reporting and serve common interests. It refers to more than just business organisations, which should focus on long-term value creation and consider their environmental impacts on the planet. It is a broader concept of engaging governments in a joint effort to create prosperity for their people, attracting society to enter the dialogue and ensuring planetary wellbeing. Originality/value: The work gives an insight into the waves of changes in the sustain-ability reporting standardisation scene that have gained momentum over the last two years. It addresses the critical views of experts and debates on how harmonising inter-national standards can make sustainability reporting and stakeholder capitalism genuinely serve the interest of stakeholders and the planet.

Minarchizm i anarchokapitalizm stanowią dominujące nurty współczesnego libertarianizmu.
In this paper the author presents the Libertarian Thought in the perspective of its genesis and interpretations. Libertarianism is an young ideological movement focused on rights of an individual (like the right to property). It has the critical attitude towards authority what is expressed in the postulate of radical limitation of its powers (Minarchism) or its dismantling (Anarcho-capitalism). In the approach of minarchists, the state have the only one responsibility: it should supervise on security dimension by management of armed forces, police and judiciary. Anarchocapitalists claim that the institution of state should be abolished. They recognize the fact that there is no way to reconcile individual liberty and the right to private property within the state— even in situation where state is focused on dimension of security. Radical libertarians with anarcho-capitalist inclination maintain that all powers of the state should be transmitted to the private sector.

In my article, I focus on the relationship between a child and adult in socio-cultural perspective in order to demonstrate how the representations of childhood are used by Polish authors of children’s literature in critical descriptions of war and other forms of violence. At first, I relate to the crucial moment in the European history in which there appeared a discourse of senility and youthfulness. Next, I present the main consequences of the “production” and “distribution” of images of childhood in pop culture. In the last part of my discussion, I analyse novels by Joanna Rudniańska, Jacek Dukaj, Grzegorz Gortat and Dorota Combrzyńska-Nogala, who, in their works about the Holocaust, the martial law in Poland and the war in Syria create the world in which young characters possess certain features belonging to the adult. My analyses demonstrate the sources of betrayal of childhood which appears in these novels like a sublime sign reflecting primarily adults’ fantasies about the child. As I show, this sign contains very few real issues referring to contemporary childhood.

The author sets forth questions about the essence of consumption, the role of the market, and protest movements, while leaving aside overused arguments about the negative impact of consumption on civilization as a whole. She presents the most important critical understandings of consumer culture, and in particular, their strategies for resisting the dominant capitalist system. She argues that certain widely promulgated attempts at deconstruction, which are based on a ‘hegemonic’ consumer world view and announce the need to desert the market, are fairly outworn and conceptually problematic. In their place, she suggests forms of engaged participation in the market, linking consumerism with conscious, creative sufficiency and efficiency of action. Consumerism thus understood could strengthen individual freedom and broaden the extent of democratic liberties. As an accepted social logic, it could favour the creation of social ties and engagement in social life; its symbolic potential could be greater-on the principle that only engagement, rather than desertion, provides a true opportunity to influence conditions.

The article follows the recent developments in the labour markets of Spain and Italy. The two countries in focus represent the 'Mediterranean model' of capitalism, in line with the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) approach. The impact of the global economic recession has been severe in both countries, which is reflected in high and rising unemployment figures. In the two countries, profound institutional reforms were implemented under pressure of the European Union (EU) prior to the crisis, yet the process has also continued after the onset of the recession. Using the field of labour relations as the example, the author looks at the tensions emerging between the embedded forms of capitalism (national context) and the 'disembedded' forms of capitalism which are imposed from above (EU context).

Opis:
The article aims to answer the question of why social market economy in Ukraine, as well as in number of post-Soviet states, has not met the expectations. It uses social dialogue as a telling example. In 1990s Ukrainian society became subjected to a multidimensional process of forming labour relations. On the one hand, the process was typical for an immature stage of capitalism, and thus could hardly be expected to lead to the emergence of a social market economy, and on the other it reproduced the worst traditions of socialist labour relations, replacing state paternalism with patronclient relationships. Establishing institutional market infrastructure was supported by social partners' organisations and legitimized by the law. A system of market relations has been created but proved incapable of performing functions essential for sustaining standards and values of economic democracy. 'Social partnership' as an ideology of labour relations was substituted by a new form - 'social dialogue'. Social dialogue has been distorted to a simulation of contemporary labour relations. Formalization of social dialogue has become a way for pro-oligarch, social partners' organisations to gradually monopolize the market, with passive acceptance from dependent, poorly organized and unprotected employees.

Goal – the aim of the paper is to present the fundamental institutional changes which took place in the Polish social policy between 1918 and 1956, i.e. from regaining independence to the end of the Stalinist period in Poland. Therefore, the paper will present both the processes that constitute the construction of the social policy system, embedded in the European tradition and capitalist economy, and the process of dismantling of that system carried out by the communists at the end of the 1940s and at the beginning of the next decade, which imitated the Stalinist model of social activity of the state. Research methodology – the paper has been prepared with the use of a number of research methods in the field of humanities and social studies, necessary for the proper reconstruction of institutional changes which took place in the Polish social policy in the discussed period. The research has been based on the query of the archival sources, printed and legal, as well as specialist press and research papers. Score – the construction of the social policy system, which began in 1918, was not completed in the interwar period, but strong institutional foundations for such a system were created. After the World War II its reconstruction was, understandably, based on the pre-war rules. Political and systemic changes, which took place in Poland after communists gained full power, meant even greater nonuniformity between the institutional solutions, which stemmed from capitalism, and the model of socialism built in the late 1940s. Along with this process, social policy also underwent salinization and, as the result of institutional changes at the beginning of the 1950s, it had completely different functions than in the capitalist economy. It was objectified and it became an instrument of economic policy aimed at socialist industrialization and collectivization of villages. Its main task was no longer to solve social issues but to meet social needs. This new role, resulting from the Stalinist system, meant significant impoverishment of social policy and limiting the effectiveness of the state activity on social life.

In this paper I uncover the identity response of the homeless to structural constraints that are facilitated through objectively produced and mass mediated culture. After an initial period of “liberation,” physical deprivation leads the homeless to seek institutionalized help. The “homeless” category constructed by the shelter industry absolves the system of blame and obfuscates the systemic roots of homelessness. In their picking and dropping of identities, and negotiations of meaning without any referential space to root themselves in, the homeless reveal to us the cultural tragedy of the present that affects us all due to rapid social change inherent in advanced capitalism.

Categories such as regimes of accumulation, modes of regulation, means of production or institutional forms constitute the starting point of consideration for the regulationists. This perspective allows to explain significant reasons for crisises and to indicates many types of productions regimes and their evolution. This article discusses the relations between mediatisation and datafication, and how the process of datafication has integrated several diverse value forms in complex interrelations. The first section outlines the rise of datafication in the wake of the technological development of digitisation in combination with new business models of the media and communications industries, leading to a tighter integration between these and other sectors of society. The second accounts for how this development paves way for certain specific value forms that result from this integrative process, and how the interrelation between value forms introduces a shift in the valuation processes of late modern data capitalism, where the social takes a prominent position. The final section discusses the relationship between datafication and mediatisation. The argument is that although datafication introduces a new phase in the mediatisation process, the former also extends beyond the latter.

Opis:
From the perspective of institutional economics within which the research concerning capitalism diversity is conducted, the capitalist system is not homogenous, and a universal model of a capitalist economy cannot be indicated. According to several researchers, the nature of capitalism implies the policy, whereas the nature of interactions between the political and social spheres is decisive for the capitalist system. The shift of economic power to emerging markets caused an increased interest in these economies and a search for the models of capitalism distinctive for them. The paper aims to present selected approaches to research on capitalism diversity and to explain the specific character of the model of capitalism from this perspective. The paper contributes to the understanding of the complexity of the Chinese socioeconomic system, while emphasising the specific synergy between politics and economics.

The undeniable fact is that various social sciences and other disciplines constitute the research perspective which relates to the practice of a multidimensional phenomenon. The welfare state is an excellent example of such notion, which in its nature unifies many theoretical and practical positions. It seems, however, that the economic and political dimensions of the welfare state (as conceptual or pro-social proposals) are disproportionately exposed both on the basis of scientific reflection and pragmatic approaches used by the institutions of the state. This tendency to think in economic and political terms, which incidentally is maintained for several decades, represents: (a) only one side of a complex nature of social welfare, and (b) a significant reductionism, leading to the elimination of sociological, cultural, educational, and psychological consequences of the functioning of the welfare state. This article is designed to reverse the trend of the dominant perception of the construct of the welfare state in economic and political terms, and replace it with the highlight of the mainly sociological dimension of this phenomenon (the welfare state sociology). However, it does not mean abandonment of the economic and political dimensions in general, as they are an integral part of the issue.

The article is based on 30 qualitative interviews with scholars in philosophy, Romance languages and history. There are signs of cognitive dissonance, with conflicting set of norms. Benefits for the academic CV, along with a discipline’s ideals, traditions and its perceived role in society are the main context in which internationalization is understood, implemented and contested, with individual variations in international practices as e.g. international mobility, networking or publication strategies.

Opis:
Aleksandra Brylska in the article The Nuclear Catastrophe of Capitalism. Polish Responses to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Disaster in Japan the Polish press discourse on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster analyzes the terms of the relationship between this event and capitalism. It raises the question to what extent a tragic event in the field of technology can undermine and weaken the capitalist framework of the world, and to what extent – in line with Naomi Klein's thought – it even contributes to the strengthening of this ideology. In the Polish press, the failure quickly ceased to be a technology event, and turned into a tragedy for international financial markets and the economy. The author argues that it is capitalism that shapes reality, including the experience of a catastrophe (both natural and technological) and the manner of talking about it. The power plant failure has polluted the global imagination, but it has also shown how polluted the world is by thinking in terms of profit and loss. The failure in Fukushima also showed that the crisis of capitalism is not something unequivocal, and that it mutates itself and is able to feed on the disaster that originally devastated it. An important aspect in the analyzed material is also the status and transformations within the perception of Japan as a technocratic country. The purpose of this article is to check how the myths of capitalism and technocratism are related to each other and how the catastrophe changes the status of these two areas.

Sometimes we even think that adequate theory arises from violence against given paradigms. How can it be so? Do we really understand what we refer to when we speak about violence?

The aim of this article is to present the theoretical standpoint of a Canadian-American psychotherapist, Nathaniel Branden. He wrote five essays which I would like to analyze. These essays can be found in the book The Virtue of Selfishness, written by a Russian-American philosopher, Ayn Rand, who was Branden’s associate. He postulated that individuals should live objective – act rationally and not succumb to whims. This way of behaviour is necessary to accomplish the existential aim of individual, which is a producing and sustaining of life. The objective life requires egoism, because the egoist is conscious of his own existence; he knows that he must live rationally, respect his own values and not sacrifice himself for other people. But it is still a question: Is the objective life really possible? The answer I try to find in this work.

In the article, I analyze the role of education in the prevailing system of neoliberal capitalism. On the one hand, it is used by the dominant culture characteristic for the upper classes to imprint appropriate ideological assumptions in the minds of students. On the other hand, there is strong resistance to the practices of subordination and implementation of the logic of the prevailing system. Illich's concept of deschooling society recognizes that compulsory education should be abolished. Critical educators such as Henry Giroux and Peter McLaren argue that the resistance present in the school testifies to the possibility of using the school to shape critical citizens capable of defending democracy. In my article, I argue that it is possible to partially free oneself from the logic of the dominant culture and to partially emancipate the habituses characteristic of the lower classes. However, it is not my goal to illustrate the ideas present in the theories under analysis by referring to specific examples in the field of a particular educational system.

Opis:
The article explores a possible connection between nationalism, capitalism, and nationalist movements’ common hostility towards environmental policies. It draws from materialist assertions about the capitalogenic nature of ecological degradation and modernist theories of nationalism, which explain it as a product or by-product of capitalist modernization. By employing theories of nationalism’s instrumentality in preserving the existing social hierarchies, the article proposes that this approach might be extrapolated onto socioecological hierarchies, which are contested or have their fundamental rules challenged by many environmental policies. Nationalism may then be seen as an instrument of capital – personified by the privileged elites – taking advantage of an ideology that appeals to those ‘left behind’ by modernization and globalization to thwart or delay changes to the socioecological status quo. An identity-based movement is thus utilized to protect the continuing exploitation and appropriation of nature. This proposed connection underscores the need for further empirical research, which is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the topic and its potential impact on environmental policies.

Economic development and transformation processes have become much more intense in economic reality in the last years than they have ever been before. At this time a lot of questions were raised about the causes of the actual Global Crisis, future crises, the factors affecting the modern economy, about the essence of contemporary capitalism, demographic problems and overgrown bureaucracy. The most spectacular threat to capitalism, (based on private entrepreneurship) according to Schumpeter, stems from the high, growing and progressive taxation. Schumpeter saw clearly that the financing of public goods and services (requiring taxes, maybe even relatively high) is something other than a clerical control of the economic system that violates the natural economic mechanism. Moreover, Schumpeter says explicitly that an entrepreneur does not have to be one person, he even states that the country (state) itself, or its agenda, can act as an entrepreneur. Therefore, it can be concluded that we may have to deal with “Tax State”, which is typical for “fettered capitalism”, and with “entrepreneurial state”, which is typical for “unfettered capitalism”. The main goal of this paper is to present two different approaches to the economic development concept: Schumpeter’s “fettered” and “unfettered” capitalism in the context of “Tax State” and interventionism. The Author analyzes presented concept in contemporary issues from the banking perspective. In the paper, the Author used critical analysis as a research method. This allowed to identify gaps in the current state of knowledge and the scientific discussion focused on J.A. Schumpeter’s theoretical concept. Analysis was performed in 2015.

The literary representation of the nation points to a community constructed not upon the tradition and history but on the simulacra produced by politically inclined discourse of media, pop culture and consumerism. This outlook offers an interesting point of departure for analyses of social and political changes (especially those following the transition in 1989 and the symbolic politics adopted in that time) mediated by literature. This article is set to describe the features of Liberal Market Economies (LMEs) and Coordinated Market Economies (CMEs), as defined in the literature on the topic, with particular reference to the European context. Even if such description is based on traditional elements, it can be useful in order to study the current evolutionary patterns of the two main models of capitalism, not only in a European perspective but also in a global one.

This article examines modern economy and society taking the formational approach, which is based on the concept that for the modern world and the predicted future, the economy will remain the foundation of society. An understanding of modern society as a post-capitalist society is proposed and justified. The definition of post-capitalism is determined as a stage of capitalism. Humankind would enter its last stage, a stage of liberal democracy and global capitalism. The major features of post-capitalistic society are examined and analyzed: economic, political, spiritual, cultural and domestic. The economic determinism in its pure form is supplemented with informational determinism in modern society, although the economy remains the primary determinant of social development. Post-capitalism is not a new concept but rather is a new stage in the development of a capitalist socioeconomic formation. An important distinction between capitalism and post-capitalism is that capitalism is characteristic of a society that is engaged in industrial and commercial development. A society has reached the post-capitalism stage when it has passed the industrial stage and entered the information era.
W artykule przeanalizowano współczesną gospodarkę i społeczeństwo, przyjmując podejście formacyjne. Ludzkość wkroczyła w swój ostatni etap, etap liberalnej demokracji i globalnego kapitalizmu.

Opis:
Teza o relatywnie niskiej zmienności wzrostu gospodarczego w krajach śródziemnomorskich wymaga jednak pogłębionej empirycznej weryfikacji uwzględniającej różnice w poziomie PKB i kapitału na mieszkańca w krajach objętych analizą.
According to theoretical concept proposed by Amable, variety of institutions vindicates the distinction between five models of capitalism. In order to provide empirical verification of this concept an index of capitalism models for 20 OECD countries was constructed. We found that the increase of this index is tantamount to the passage from Mediterranean via Anglo-Saxon and Continental to Nordic model of capitalism. As a corollary, the results obtained support the argument for distinguishing between various model of capitalism. Further, increase in index leads to greater output volatility. It suggests that Mediterranean and Nordic models of capitalism are characterized, respectively, by lowest and highest growth volatility. The thesis on the relatively low output volatility in the countries with Mediterranean model of capitalism requires further verification, however, with more emphasis on the differences in GDP and capital per capita in the analyzed countries.

This article compares memoirs written by the unemployed in the 1930s and at the end of the 20th century. It pays particular attention to the structural, social and psychological similarities between the plights of the unemployed in these two periods. Through affirmative reading of the diaries, fully trusting in the diarists’ honesty, the author tracks the sources of income, the consequences of poverty and joblessness, attitudes towards capitalism, and the diarists’ social and psychological condition. Much of the work is devoted to discussion of differences between women’s and men’s memoirs. The author attempts to identify the reasons for gender-specific personal narratives which the memoirs clearly are. She also discusses the question of self-narrative as a modern way of constructing identity and agency, a painful and often fruitless process for marginalised people.

Jej rozpowszechnienie prowadzi niekiedy do fałszywych sądów. W tle tego głównego celu opracowanie pokrótce przedstawia zarys szczególnego poglądu, szeroko rozpowszechnionego w różnych koncepcjach dotyczących kapitalizmu i rozważających go w perspektywie religijnej.
One of the most common sociological convictions is the Weber’s thesis about the genetic relationship between Protestantism and capitalism. The proliferation of this thesis at times leads to false premises as for instance the opinion that the capitalist social order has emerged from the Luther’s theology. The article aims to answer the question of Luther’s contribution to capitalism, it also shows the crucial theological aspects of the Luther’s teaching on economic order. Furthermore, it presents specific and widely spread views which considers capitalism in the religious perspective: that of Walter Benjamin and that of Max Weber.

Both capitalism and democracy belong to the most intensely debated issues among philosophers, thinkers and scholars. They remain in complicated relations determining one another. At the same time the current dynamism of their relations constitutes one of the most challenging research agenda for economists, political scientists and representatives of other disciplines. This paper aims at building bridges between the economic and political perspectives offering refreshed deliberations on the correlations between democratic and capitalist logics.

The author outlines a basic framework for anarcho-capitalism, a stateless social order in which safety, law and adjudication of disputes are provided by private companies (private defense agencies) competing with each other in the free market. In the course of presentation, three fundamental problems of anarcho-capitalism are addressed. (1) Is a peaceful cooperation among agencies possible? (2) Would agencies respect the rights of their customers? (3) How would the law look like in an anarcho-capitalist society? The last problem is especially vexing, since anarcho-capitalists seem to be caught up in a contradiction here. On one hand they are proponents of a specific moral theory (based on non-aggression principle), on the other hand they do not allow for any central, monopolistic agency to impose that moral theory on society. Is it possible for the law in the anarcho-capitalist society to be simultaneously produced by competing agents and remain libertarian at the same time?

The aim of the article is to present how three main economic crises (the 1989 transition-related crisis, the 1997 Asian crisis and the 2008 financial crises) had an impact on the consolidation of neoliberal policy in Poland. The reader will be acquainted with the political context of the introduction of free market reforms from the early days of liberal democracy. Moreover, the main arguments of the liberal elite, who remain the main supporters of analyzed hegemony, will be presented. The article provides also information on alternative scenarios of socio-economical development in Poland after the collapse of the system of real socialism. These considerations may constitute a starting point for further discussion on the popularity of illiberal parties in Poland and Central Europe.

While Industrial Revolution helped England to become a great power in the world, capitalism created a huge gap between the middle classes and working classes. Observing the condition of the society, Marx and Engels created their famous claim of class struggle in The Communist Manifesto. They emphasized the gap between two classes and how to revolt against the capitalist system by the working class. This paper ventures to study the class issue in the Victorian society from the perspective of the Marxist literary theory. It analyses how the capitalist system makes working class people’s life miserable while it enriches the lives of middle class people. In this respect, Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel Mary Barton will be studied together with the links between the novel and The Communist Manifesto.

The introduction of a free market in Poland 25 years ago entailed spectacular development, although social development has been much slower. Such a situation has led to increasing income inequality, a persistently high level of unemployment and social exclusion. Poland still has potential for development in social and economic terms, as has been shown by the country’s progress during the twenty five years of economic transformation and implementing market economy. Poland belongs to the group of highly developed countries with a significant market potential and constantly increasing domestic demand. However, there are still serious threats to the country’s harmonious and sustainable socio-economic development. These include the demographic situation, unemployment and public budget deficit. Another serious barrier to development are dysfunctions in the development and exploitation of scientific research which hamper the increase of innovativeness in Poland. Social dysfunctions are usually accompanied by dysfunctions of the political system, including the election cycle syndrome which leads to election goals being put before macroeconomic socio-economic effectiveness. Debates and dilemmas concerning the economic system are usually foregrounded at historical turning points, but it seems that the debate concerning the economic system has never before had such global resonance as it does today, which is partly an effect of the global crisis. The experience gained during the crisis has resulted in greater readiness throughout the world to see the solution in an ordoliberal political system focusing on a social market economy, by definition striving for social inclusion. The current preference for such an approach is primarily the result of countries with ordoliberal elements in their political systems having experienced fewer negative effects of the global crisis than countries tending towards neoliberalism. The example of Poland, despite its successes in the field of transformation, can serve as an illustration of how difficult it is to find a satisfying solution in terms of economic systems. The political system of the social market economy identified in the Polish constitution and the European Union treaties is a capitalistic, liberal model of a system of equilibrium serving to effectively reconcile economic, social and ecological interests and prevent social exclusion and unemployment.

Opis:
Hilaire Belloc, prolific British writer and friend of G.K. Chesterton, was widely known for his firm Catholic faith and strong belief in the leading role of the Catholic Church in establishing the European Civilization. In combination with his interests in economy, this resulted in his consistent historic vision of the western world, with Reformation as a turning point. European society, once existing as a servile state, was transformed by Christianity into a distributist state, which was regarded by Belloc as the best possible social-economic system. But when rapid Reformation changed the common morality, then arose Capitalism, which degraded the majority of population, and threatened the society with further perils of socialism, and even the return of the servile state. In this Article the Author argues, that in spite of the popular opinion, the incontestable influence of Reformation was not a positive factor in the development of the European Civilization, but in fact it resulted in a sudden change of morality, which eventually destroyed a once tested and effective system, putting the society in danger of further perilous consequences.

The main issue presented in the article is the process of globalization (also described as a phase of global capitalism) seen from the ethical point of view. The process of globalization has been researched for a long time. Global ethics itself also seems to be already a separate field of study. The growing interest in ethics observed in the last years is mostly due to the crisis of trust put in the sphere of business, as well as the government and institutions. The aim of the article is to provoke a wider discussion concerning the basic rules and the intentions of the global ethics in the environment of today's conditions of global economy in capitalist countries as well as an attempt to convince that the level of the global ethics depends mostly on the current state of ethical awareness in the society and the institutional compliance with ethical norms on local, national and international level.

An aim of considerations is an attempt to present comprehensive and organised knowledge on the economic and cultural-political reasons of corruption in Poland after the year 2004. Also the thesis put at the beginning, saying that corruption is a consequence of economic and political-cultural determinants in Poland – proved to be true as by way of analysis it was possible to ascertain that the main reasons for corruption in Poland, having acquired its membership in the EU, are, first, economic determinants what was indicated by the sources of corruption in Poland in the theory of economists-functionalists and neo-functionalists, reference thereof to the contemporary reality in Poland. Second, cultural and political, indicating the sources in the political tradition and culture in various historical periods of Poland, i.e. from the Saxon times, through the German occupation and the period of real socialism, till the period of systems transformation what is also indicated by the subject literature.

The topic of the paper is the origin of the capitalist mode of production as seen by two giants of the social sciences: Max Weber and Karl Marx. In other words, first Weber's famous theory of the capitalist spirit is examined in-depth, not restricting oneself to the overview of the critical literature, but adding a couple of novel counter-arguments put forward by the present author himself. Weber's treatment is then compared with an equally famous Marxian theory of primitive capitalist accumulation. Better to bridge the two approaches in question, Grossman's essay has been used to that end. It is also pointed out that from the perspective of modern historical studies, Marx was largely right, and his theory is compelling to this day.

The doctrine of predestination in the Lutheran and Calvinist theology, along with the assumption of a radical separation of nature and grace as well as the material and spiritual realm, had a significant impact on social life. The salvation of the soul, the soteriological dimension of human destiny, remained dependent on the grace of God (predestination), undeserved and unfathomable. The earthly reality, the institution of the Church and good works could in no way contribute to the salvation of the soul. Martin Luther, especially at the initial stage of his reformation activities, focused on private spirituality, considering the earthly dimension of reality to be the domain of the secular power. John Calvin and his successors justified in their teachings a different attitude manifested in the interest in the earthly world based on religious ethics. The doctrine of predestination, therefore, did not result in, as one would expect, quietism but in activism. The Calvinists believed that predestination was not manifested in single good deeds but in a certain methodology of systematised life based on religious ethics. Religiousness was supposed to be expressed through activity in the world and was meant to show the glory of its Creator. Work, thrift and honesty were supposed to lead to the rebirth, i.e. “sanctification” of the world, and were the essence of what Max Weber called the spirit of capitalism. Calvinism led to changes in the approach to such economic issues as money lending at interest, work or enrichment.

Traditionally Catholicism has been perceived as unfriendly to the capitalist economy. Protestantism’s image is different: it has been regarded as a religious movement which boosted the so-called spirit of capitalism. The aim of this article is to raise a question whether today’s Catholicism still deserves that characterization as a denomination biased against capitalism. This issue is of considerable importance for business ethicists who are interested in the moral condition of market economy and, quite often, in the impact of religion on economic culture. Many of them are Catholics themselves and their religion seems to be a real source of inspiration for the ethical analyses of economic life they present. This article offers a number of arguments to the effect that although Catholic social teaching originated in the pre-modern, medieval period, it has changed to a large degree due to several papal encyclicals in the 20th century. Centesimus annus by John Paul II should be mentioned here as an epochal message expressing approval of human creativity and entrepreneurship. This new perspective was also due to Catholic philosophers and theologians such as Michael Novak and other members of the neoconservative movement in the United States.

In late capitalism, class is increasingly made on the move, not in static locations, as different forms of mobility resonate with the making of class in different ways. Poles are the leading European nation who move abroad. However, what the transnationalization of class means for the Polish workforce in the context of diversified employment and mobility regimes has remained underexplored to date. In this article transnational mobility is seen as enacted under the employment umbrella of transnational subcontractors and staffing agencies for short-term contracts abroad. The author focuses on Poles who work in the construction industry and shipyards and explores how transnational contract work conditions workers’class relations and experiences, with the aim of grasping the collective and individual experience of working and living “on a contract” and how this affects their situation in Poland. The article shows that what in most research appears as a working-class mobility populated by low-skilled and vulnerable Polish migrants emerges on the ground as far more heterogeneous and dynamic, marked by a common transnational subjugation as well as inner class hierarchies and antagonism. The argumentation draws on a multi-sited fieldwork conducted in Finland, Denmark, Norway and Poland in 2014–2017.

The paper combines a broad theoretical framework of comparable capitalism with the insights from new economic sociology and new institutional economics to understand and assess mechanisms of China's evolution. During the last three decades China's economic system has undergone a great transformation from communism to some form of state-led capitalism. The evolutionary approach that balanced the interests of economic and political actors led to the gradual introduction of a capitalist institutional framework, but also preserved the immense role of the Communist Party. In the course of the reforms, former direct control over the economy has been replaced by more discretionary measures like corporate governance (which conserved the extensive patronage system), and Party affiliation (which allowed for political penetration of the private sector). Supplying examples of mounting economic waste, I argue that China's present variety of capitalism is hardly an optimal solution, and the further development will strictly depend on state and Party withdrawal from economic control.

Opis:
The starting point for my reflections was a thesis presented by Max Weber more than one hundred years ago. According to this thesis, a Protestant ethos was an important factor responsible for the spectacular economic growth of Northern Europe. In his own reflections, the German scholar paid attention mainly to both Protestant asceticism, which concentrated the energy of believers on the work they did, as well as on theology, especially Calvinism, which provided explanations for hard work and the accumulation of capital. It seems, however, that in his reconstruction of the Protestant ethos, Weber described universal mechanisms which are responsible for social mobilization in general. The problem is that instead of trying to analyze them, he ultimately concentrated on their cultural manifestations. The main aim of my paper is an identification of these mechanisms. They discipline individuals, or more correctly, they discipline the patterns of playing these social roles, which are functionally significant for initiating and sustaining the mobilization process. In other words, when there is a need in a society to achieve specific goals, including economic ones, it should develop social norms which will be able to bolster the engagement of its members and focus their energy on specific aspects of their life. Moreover, there is a need to prepare non‑normative mechanisms, which increase the probability that members of the society will adhere to these social norms. The reflections in this regard seem to be important mainly for developing states. On the one hand, they should prepare mechanisms which allow them to develop their economies. On the other hand, the members of these states must face many costs associated with their implementation and this problem should also be a part of the discussion.

Stefan Kisielewski’s intellectual struggle with Polish communism Stefan Kisielewski (1911–1991) a Polish novelist, composer, music critic, essayist, feature writer and a politician, was an exceptional personage in post‑World War II Poland. In his features, published in Tygodnik Powszechny since 1945, in a light, ironic and allusive way to prevent censorship, he described the Polish reality that his readers were acquainted with, in a way that revealed the real causes of the phenomena he observed. The truth was simple: the communist reality was the result of politico‑economic system that was imposed based on a Marxist theory of economy. Kisielewski’s criticism of communism was not just a matter of a keen observation and sensible conclusions; it was based on his studies of Marxism that he began before World War II. In turn, in Wilhelm Röpke’s Die Gesellschaftskrisis der Gegenwart (1942), he found an accurate characterisation of the socialist economy and an explanation for its non‑functioning. The second important reason for his criticism of communism was Kisielewski’s Catholicism, which operated as a counter‑balance to Marxism, combined with the idea of a liberal‑democratic regime. In his later years, Kisielewski criticised the social teachings of the Catholic Church, and suggested a new idea that they were based on “the theology of profit” (a prefiguration of the encyclical Centesimus Annus) as an ideological justification of the attitudes necessary for the functioning of the market economy in Poland. He even suggested the implementation of a dictatorship to avoid long parliamentary democratic procedures, and in this way to establish a quick and effective market economy on the ruins of socialism.

The sexual revolution of the 20th century was based on a redefinition of the body, which led to a new postmodern sexual ideal in which the body and sexuality were freed from the limitations of biology. This phenomenon was inserted within the logic of capitalism, which proposes itself as a “theory of everything,” that is to say, comprehensive of all human reality. Sexuality thus became an object of consumption, bowing to the logic of the capitalist system in which everything can be bought and sold. This new sexual market is based on sexual freedom, giving rise to a fierce competition between users that reaffirms narcissistic, individualistic patterns. In this sense, through the theory of sexual capital, the monogamous structure that existed prior to the sexual revolution and the new polyamorous structure of postmodernity are compared, with the conclusion that the sexual revolution has generated new forms of unforeseen sexual violence.

This article begins with a brief review of research on the development of ideas about the knowledge-based economy (analysed here as ‘economic imaginaries’) and their influence on how social forces within and beyond the academy have attempted to reorganize higher education and research in response to real and perceived challenges and crises in the capitalist order since the mid-1970s. This provides the historical context for three ‘thought experiments’ about other aspects of the development of academic capitalism. The first involves a reductio ad absurdum argument about different potential steps in the economisation, marketization and financialization of education and research and is illustrated from recent changes in higher education. The second maps actual strategies of the entrepreneurial university and their role in shaping academic capitalism. The third speculates on possible forms of ‘political’ academic capitalism and their changing places in the interstices of the other trends posited in these thought experiments. The article ends with suggestions for a research agendum that goes beyond thought experiments to substantive empirical investigations.

A part of the fascination of Left Hand of Darkness—as well as the ambiguity of its ultimate message—derives from the reductive and subterranean drive within it toward a utopian „rest,” toward some ultimate „no-place” of a collectivity untormented by sex or history. The attempt, in the portrayal of feudal Karhide, to imagine something like a West that has never known capitalism is of a piece, structurally and in spirit, with Le Guin’s attempt, in the portrayal of the ambisexuality of the Gethenians, to imagine biology without desire. Le Guin’s underlying identification between sex as a well-nigh gratuitous complication of existence and capitalism as a disease of change and meaningless evolutionary momentum is powerfully conveyed by the technique of world-reduction: in world reduction, omission functions as utopian exclusion. Karhide is not, of course, a utopia, but it is now clear that The Left Hand of Darkness served as a proving ground for The Dispossessed. The Odonian civilization of barren Annares becomes the most through-going application of the world reduction technique at the same time that it constitutes a timely rebuke to present attempts to parlay American abundance and consumerism into some ultimate vision of the „great society”.

With the widespread adoption of ICT technologies, platforms, social media and sharing economy businesses have emerged as models of economic organization. This paper examines their functioning on a micro level to provide a thorough critique. The theory of cognitive capitalism and opposing arguments are explored in order to bring a holistic understanding and observe how value is captured and accumulated with the use of technological apparatuses. Cognitive capitalism is not uniform, however, and recognition of the special properties displayed by networks makes it possible to identify the challenge posed by the rising array of netarchist platforms. Platform cooperativism is the proposed egalitarian and long-term sustainable counter, as it aims to design new tools in line with the commons paradigm. Finally, the paper provides key insights into the specifications, difficulties, and next steps required to lead to better platform co-ops and a better future.

The core of market economy is misconceived when it is construed purely in economic terms (cf. Breuer 1999: 8). The purpose of this article is to hint at some possible alternative paths of deliberating the concept of capitalism which would not be dominated by classical economic paradigm. While recognising the multiple faces of capitalism stemming amongst others from historical, geo-political, ideological and even economic variables, the author conceives of contemporary capitalism in terms of a sum total of certain macro-features which differentiate this economic model from centrally-planned economies. The point of departure for the developed argumentation is the main trend recognisable in the recent decades (end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century) which consists in accumulation of primarily hereditary capital in the hands of the few, which phenomenon is referred to by Thomas Piketty as “patrimonial” capitalism. Since that development results in a limited or no opportunity of the majority of the world population to accrue wealth through their work, a question arises whether such economic system may be regarded as legitimate. In this context the author attempts to shed some light on the potentials and limits of the role of national, transnational and /or international governance to mitigate the negative impact of the unabashed divergence forces observable in the contemporary economy. The overall conclusion of the paper is that, however reluctant the national authorities may be to see further intervention of transnational and international entities in the organisation of global economy, it is necessary if the healthy foundations of the global market are ever to be achieved and as long as long as the states remain idle themselves.

Aim: The major aim of the current essay is to argue that neoliberal capitalism, by virtue of its core tenets, has significantly increased the risk of disease outbreaks like SARS-Covid-2.   Conclusion/Finding: The dominant socio-political-economic system across the industrialized world is neoliberal capitalism that focuses on economic growth and profit maximization. These are obtained in part through the weakening or elimination of environmental regulations. Although neoliberalism has brought benefits to some, it has exacerbated social and economic divisions within and between countries. More importantly, it is undeniably responsible for increasing the rate of environmental destruction, especially in developing countries in the south, which are rich is resources and raw materials coveted by multinational corporations based in the western developed countries. The loss and/or fragmentation of ecosystems is also bringing people into closer contact with many species that were once largely insulated from human communities, such as bats, that harbor harmful viruses with the potential to affect people through zoonotic spill-over via another wild or domesticated species.   Originality/Value of Article: Because it eschews the precautionary principle, neoliberal capitalism is uniquely ill-equipped to prepare for potential calamities like pathogenic outbreaks and, more worryingly, climate change. This makes it obsolete in the Anthropocene. We need to seriously work towards making structural changes in the socio-political landscape in ways that reduce the damage we are doing and also strive to create social justice across the world. This is imperative if we are to create a sustainable future and to protect much of the living world from destruction.

"Biopolitic" has become a popular concept for interpreting the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the term is often used vaguely, as a buzzword, and therefore loses its specificity and relevance. This article systematically explains what the biopolitical lens offers for analyzing and normatively criticizing the politics of the coronavirus. I argue that biopolitic are politics of differentiated vulnerability that are intrinsic to capitalist modernity. The situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic is, therefore, less of a state of exception than it might appear; COVID-19 is a continuation and intensification of the capitalist biopolitic of differentiated vulnerability. In order to critically evaluate this situation, the article proposes the concept of “democratic biopolitic” and shows how it can be used, among others, for a queer critique of the differentiated vulnerabilities that are produced by the coronavirus and its capitalist governance. In contrast to widespread interpretations of democratic biopolitic that focus on collective care in communities, this article highlights the role of the state and of the redistribution of political power and economic resources as key for biopolitical democratization.

This essay considers the contradiction between a free market and ecology in a contemporary form. Neoliberalism as a basis of globalization entails the reduction of society to its economic dimensions and, as a result, a lack of any control over any of the political and social consequences that production will have for humankind and the Earth. A special concern may arouse neo-liberal project of reduction of political role of the state. In conclusion the author repeats Marx's thesis that capitalism creates production that will destroy the Earth and the workers. Global capitalism and the prosperity of the Earth are impossible to maintain in tandem. Humankind must choose.

Opis:
From the perspective of the history of ideas the output of Karl Marx poses a very difficult object of research. Though Marx himself made the issue of social justice a central aspect of his scientific praxis, the idea of “justice” itself seems to be paradoxically rather insignificant in his work. Nevertheless, no other philosophical conception has initiated such a number of social and political movements that eagerly tried to overcome the injustice of the capitalistic system and thereby radically change the fundamental processes of sociation. On the basis of the thoughts of non-Marxist Ralf Dahrendorf I will try to show that Marx’s conception of historical materialism itself contains two ideas of justice: first a “relative” idea of justice, which Marx criticized for being a functional superstructure of the capitalistic system – and the second is an “absolute” idea of justice, which Marx did not articulate directly but which can be understood on the basis of his work as a target of the social revolution. However, in Marx’s work this “absolute” idea of justice is not a utopian one, but it poses a materialistic potential of the capitalistic system that is still waiting for its realization.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was to determine the level of knowledge and attitudes towards surveillance capitalism and online institutional privacy protection practices among adolescents in Poland (aged 18–19), as well as to determine the relationships between these variables. Surveillance capitalism has emerged as a result of internet users’ activities and involves the collection of all data about these users by different entities for specific benefits without letting them know about it. The dominant role in surveillance capitalism is played by hi-tech corporations. The aim of the study was to verify whether knowledge, and what kind of knowledge, on surveillance capitalism translates into practices related to the protection of online institutional privacy. The study was conducted on a sample of 177 adolescents in Poland. The main part of the questionnaire consisted of two scales: the scale of knowledge and attitudes on surveillance capitalism, and the scale of online institutional privacy protection practices. The results of the study, calculated by statistical methods, showed that although the majority of respondents had average knowledge and attitudes about surveillance capitalism, which may result from insufficient knowledge of the subject matter, this participation in specialized activities/workshops influences the level of intensification of online institutional privacy protection practices.

Opis:
Mit nierówności i ta całość, którą tworzy – mitologia kapitalizmu – wykorzystuje zwulgaryzowaną wersję pojęcia homo oeconomicus i przedstawia ją jako uniwersalny obraz człowieka.
Mythology of inequalities is a part of mythology of capitalism. This mythology created obviousness that became after 1989 content of the everyday consciousness and was never critically analyzed in. It plays in the system an ideological function: it explains this system referring to its “normalcy” and naturalness, and justifies its negative social consequences. Any criticism of this system and activity oriented at its transformation was made difficult or impossible. The construction of the mythologized reality is full of contradictions and disregards achievements of social thought and the real-life experiences. An important role in the rise of this mythologized reality was played by intellectual elites that uncritically accepted the mythology of capitalism in spite of many historical facts (the experiences of the 1st World War, Great Depression and subsequent crises) suggested the necessity to approach it cautiously. The danger resulting from the myth of capitalism (of inequality), consists in excluding dignity and freedom of man by the anthropology it comprises. The myth of inequality (and the whole myth of capitalism of which it is a constitutive part) avails of trivialized version of the concept of homo oeconomicus and presents it as universally valid image of man. If to take seriously and systematically those ideas, one could – availing of them –construct undemocratic society and state. It is the duty of intellectuals to analyze critically social myths it comprises – to try to discover their origins and relations with experience, to characterize their philosophical contexts and consequences for society.

The institution of property is undeniably one of the most important elements of every social and economic system. It affects every human being, playing a vital role in everyday life of the whole human race. Nevertheless, its origin and true meaning is not always treated with due attention, which sometimes leads to practical errors and improper application of this essential idea in human societies. The article concerns the true importance of private property, based on works by two British writers of the early 20th century, H. Belloc and G.K. Chesterton. The author describes the economic freedom attached to private property and shows it as a condition necessary for maintaining basic human dignity. Then he presents two of the most common errors concerning perception and application of property – the limitation of its positive effects in capitalism and the futile attempt of its abolition in socialism.
Instytucja własności stanowi jeden z najistotniejszych składników każdego systemu społecznego i ekonomicznego, ponieważ oddziałuje bezpośrednio na życie każdego człowieka, będąc praktycznym elementem zwykłej codzienności. – H. Belloca i G.K. Chestertona.

This essay considers the question of how original/new interpretations help redefine (or reify) the original/old perception of Shakespeare and the work its cultural capital performs, demonstrating the inherent impossibility of reconciling an “original” Shakespeare with contemporary performances of his plays through a reading of Twelfth Night, and address some of the ideological implications of trying to conflate the two. It then takes a detour into contemporary marketing and consumer-psychology literature to explore the crucial roles which the concepts of “authenticity” and “originality” have come to play in contemporary consumer culture, circling back to Shakespeare, to ruminate on the implications of the use of his cultural capital as an ultimate positional good in the 21st century.

The article consists of three parts. In the first one, the author explains that he treats the concept of narration primarily as a tool for organizing our understanding of the world. In the second part, he reconstructs the individualist narrative, which became popular in Poland with the advent of the capitalist system. In the third part, he presents a possible counter-narrative to this individualistic vision. Using the views and findings of researchers critical of the neo-liberal version of capitalism – such as Ha-Joon Chang or Joseph Stiglitz – he also presents a substantive argument for accepting this counter-narrative.

The dehumanisation and exploitation of the environment of the Niger Delta has become a template for fear of the end of human existence. This has driven an increased interest in studies about Anthropocene. From the 1980s, Robert Buell and Adrian Ivakhiv have advanced what Smith Kopnina terms The Environmental Condition to the frontiers of global scholarship thereby greening the humanities. Scholars in environmental studies like Bill McGuire have decried the rising level of floods, the ignorance of the destruction of the environment and the possibility of an apocalypse. Creative writers and dramatic artistes alike, including film makers from Africa and beyond have engaged in the exploration of environmental interests focusing on its degenerating condition, often depicting how people could take social action towards liberating themselves and their environment from oppressive chains. The study aims to interrogate how these stated eco-critical aims have been achieved in selected movies. Through the concept of anthropocene and eco-criticism, the paper undertakes acontent analysis of Frank Rajah Arase’s Somewhere in Africa: The cries of Humanityand David Attwood’s Blood and Oilto explore these concerns.

Some of the most promising post-Cold War developments in Marxian thought have been stimulated by problems facing Marxists in Western Europe, to that extent they all seem to lay bare, intentionally or otherwise, the lacking of qualities, of Marx’s prediction. The most significant example of the failure of Marxist theory to be realised in practice is the persistent survival of the capitalist mode of production. The inevitable crisis foreseen by Marx, which would lead to revolution, failed to materialise and that claim is now itself historical, since capitalism has become the norm for social organisation in most of the world’s nations. By asking the question how capitalism can persist amid crisis, Gramsci, provided the most promising way of revision to the stunted Marxian orthodoxy. Today for us is important to ask whether Marxist analysis of neoliberal global strategy or globalisation and fragmentation invite reconsideration of the tendency on the part of many international relations scholarships to ignore and simply dismiss Marxism. It is also important to consider whether the significance of Marxist project of developing a critical approach to international politics, is but one way in which Marxism progressed beyond the traditional Anglo-American scholarship to IR.

Opis:
Theoretical background: The article is devoted to the knowledge gap in understanding processes of growing state interventionism in a number of post-communist countries, Poland being one of the most notable examples. This evolution is still understudied in the literature, both in terms of evidence and proper theoretical framework. Existing theoretical perspectives have been created for studying other types of economies an do not fully fit the transition ones. Among these perspectives, the state capitalism (SC) one seems to be the most promising.Purpose of the article: The task of this paper is to study the growing state interventionism in Poland using the state capitalism approach which had to be refined by the authors in order to be more applicable for analyzing transition economies. Using this framework, the history of SC formation and its present state in Poland are studied, including specific features of Polish state capitalism, e.g. the importance of the state-owned enterprise (SOE) sector as the source of rents, as well as the varieties of the state control over the enterprise sector.Research methods: The article makes use of mostly qualitative methods, quantitative ones playing an auxiliary role by systematizing evidence used in qualitative research. The study was based on analysis of the existing literature and evidence of interventionist practices of the Polish government. The authors attempted to fine-tune the SC approach both through refining its definition and including areas previously mostly neglected by SC studies such as relationships between the state and the enterprise sector. They created a typology of SC phenomena in transition economies which made it possible to study the Polish case in a comprehensive way.Main findings: At this stage, the authors think that no strict definition of state capitalism is possible because of its highly contextual character. Thus, the outcome of the study may not be universal, but the authors believe that their concept of six basic features of state capitalism may be applicable not only to Poland, but to other transition economies as well. Besides, the article raises awareness of the importance of state-controlled enterprises in studies on state capitalism. The article also identifies challenges for further research and the still existing knowledge gaps. Among others, the questions remain, whether the statist trends in Poland and other countries lead to a system change and what are the roots of these trends.

The objective of this paper is to analyse the double-layered diversification of the European integration system represented by the countries of Central Europe (CE). Here exemplified by the Visegrad Four (V4) states (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Czechia), the region offers a unique laboratory of European differentiated integration (DI). The V4 positions itself on the outer-core of the European Union hemispheres. At the same time, the bloc itself is internally diversified in various, important aspects of integration (conflicting trajectories with Brussels, monetary integration, energy policy, relations with Russia, etc.). Unpacking this intra-V4 diversity will be accompanied by an exploration of the economic and institutional factors possibly affecting it. The political-economy perspective allows us to capture the determinants intersecting at the crossroads of economic and political dimensions. The authors will explore the selected building blocks of the system of differentiation inside the V4 group.

This article investigates the interrelated roles of education, morality, and philosophy in Kant as a response to the transactional view of humanity promoted by the spirit of capitalism, known as the “capital form.” This article investigates the effect of the capital form upon educational institutions and self-cultivation, or Bildung. Kant’s views on the role of education in moral development provide a path forward in the reconstitution of Bildung within persons. I argue that education serves a moral role in Kant, helping humanity achieve enlightenment – in direct contrast to the “un-enlightened” and uncultivated self created by the capital form. I turn to Kant’s views on education, focusing on the role of philosophy in moral development, and the cultivation of virtues such as modesty and appropriate self-love. Finally, I turn to contemporary pedagogical theory, providing practical examples of teaching techniques to help liberate students from their “self-imposed minority.”

Według filozofki, współczesne demokracje potrzebują współczujących obywateli, a pożyteczny w demokracji rodzaj współczucia najlepiej w sobie wyrobić, studiując sztuki wyzwolone.
This paper examines Martha Nussbaum’s formulation of the public value of the humanities. According to Nussbaum, today’s democracies need compassionate citizens, and the type of compassion that serves politics best can be developed through the study of the Liberal Arts. I try to reconstruct Nussbaum’s argumentation and show its sociological implications. Considering the ongoing debate on the crisis of public engagement, Nussbaum’s thesis offers an original way of restoring meaning to public matters. Its weakness, however, is little insight into the questions of social structure and the rationalization of political life. Nussbaum’s vision of the political role of compassion can be described as an element of a liberal utopia since compassion serves to constantly correct the unintended consequences of the functioning of liberal democratic institutions rather than to transform them.

Opis:
The subject of this essay is Andrzej Waśkiewicz’s book Ludzie – rzeczy – ludzie. O porządkach społecznych, gdzie rzeczy łączą, nie dzielą (People–Things–People: On Social Orders Where Things Connect Rather Than Divide People). The book is the work of a historian of ideas and concerns contemporary searches for alternatives to capitalism: the review presents the book’s overview of visions of society in which the market, property, inequality, or profit do not play significant roles. Such visions reach back to Western utopian social and political thought, from Plato to the nineteenth century. In comparing these ideas with contemporary visions of the world of post-capitalism, the author of the book proposes a general typology of such images. Ultimately, in reference to Simmel, he takes a critical stance toward the proposals, recognizing the exchange of goods to be a fundamental and indispensable element of social life. The author of the review raises two issues that came to mind while reading the book. First, the juxtaposition of texts of a very different nature within the uniform category of “utopia” causes us to question the role and status of reflections regarding the future and of speculative theory in contemporary social thought; second, such a juxtaposition suggests that reflecting on the social “optimal good” requires a much more precise and complex conception of a “thing,” for instance, as is proposed by new materialism or anthropological studies of objects and value as such.
